MSE Residents

With this May edition of the MSE World being the final one of the Season, a special thank you to Linda Duck and her team for their amazing contributions. They say “go out on a high”. We certainly can say that about Linda. We will miss your unique way of presenting our community. Thanks Linda for all you’ve done – It’s much appreciated!!

Shutting down all activities at Marco Shores Estates was one of the hardest decisions that I have made during my tenure as President. Although I realize some of you were upset with that decision, most if not all, followed the CDC directives.

One thing we can count on is change. The office will have a few changes. Patti Naughton will be working throughout the month of May and Kristine Buscemi will be joining us from June – October. Thanks Patti for your tremendous contributions and boundless energy. Welcome Kristine Buscemi!!

I’m sure there were instances of frustration and cabin fever. I know there were also times of enjoyment and community togetherness, albeit occurring with ‘social distancing’ of six feet or more. I’ve never seen so many tricycles, bicycles, walkers and golf carts. The streets were abuzz with activity. And, of course there was Marco Shores Estates fabulous ‘volunteerism’. Several of you were checking on your neighbors and assisting in various ways. There was a group of ladies that put together a face mask program that consisted of everything from gathering materials, shaping and sewing, and delivery of these masks. Great Job and Thanks to All of You!!

Another change will be our new and improved MSE Website. It will still be MarcoShoresEstates.com. Click on the Residents Dashboard to register. It will be worth the extra effort – I promise you. This website is going to allow you to sign up for events on our calendar, allow easier access to Resident Directory, Documents and General Information about MSE. It will also serve as a better sales tool for potential new buyers.

As of the date that I am writing this article, April 12th, there are no known incidents of the coronavirus in our community. I hope and pray this continues to be the case. I know it has been hard for everyone, and harder for some. I also believe our strong sense of community has grown even stronger. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

More changes to come even if our season was cut short or longer depending on your point of view. The BOD has approved the excavation and installation of a new fence on the East Side, a new Maintenance Building at our Storage Area, a hurricane rated club house extension which will provide added space on demand to hold our events and a new vinyl plank floor for our banquet room and fitness center.

I realize this issue of the MSE World is to be dedicated to our veterans and I do not want to take anything away from them. If it were not for these brave men and women, the United States of America would not be “the land of the free”. None of you want, nor expect, any praise or glory and saying thank you doesn’t seem like enough. But in the end, that is the best that I can do.

Changes in our weather is a given. Let’s make sure we don’t take our weather for granted. Florida’s Hurricane Season is typically from June – November. It’s always expected that Florida will experience an event. PREPARE your home if you leave for the season. Keep those projectiles inside your home. The Hurricane All Hazards Guide is located by the office doorway. Make sure to pick up your copy.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!! Again, this year, I want to thank Linda Duck for her devotion to the MSE World. All of us at MSE appreciate your dedication and we thank you for the excellent job with this publication.

Lastly, I wish everyone staying here year-round the best of health and those who finally made it back safely - good health to you and yours always.

I look forward to seeing all of you next season. Stay safe, healthy and I wish you well. Have a great summer! REMEMBER: Shareholders, Leaseholders and Renters.

Good day MSE friends and neighbors. Let’s hope by the next time we see each other this fall/winter there will be a full calendar of Social events. A group gathered in early March with a mission to brainstorm about parties and social events. This chat group of about 12 men and women included a full spectrum of residents; veteran and newcomers, seasonal owners and renters and full time residents. Something the 12 of us agreed on (well, we agreed on many things) is socializing and spending time with neighbors is what we want and that is fun - being together. Parties, dinners, dancing, playing games, morning coffee or breakfast is not for everyone. Maybe there’s something we haven’t tried yet. We would like to find that out. Most of all it’s important to have fun. Look for an email survey sometime this Spring or Summer. Some events you can expect to see next season :

SHUFFLEBOARD: Larry Preston, Marylyn & Roy Downing

HollyDaze - December 18, 2020

TRAVEL: Ray Carter

Chili (soup?) Cook - Early January 2021

ZUMBA GOLD: Deb Floeter

Hot Damn - February 5, 2021

A SHOUT OUT TO:

Italian Night - March 2, 2021

BOB PORTER Thank you from the women that sewed the MSE Face Masks! For the gifts of Jewelry Boxes for the ladies:

And the gifts of a tray for their husbands to hold their keys & coins in, to put on their bureaus at night time. YOU ARE THE BEST!

Golf

Garden Beautification Club

Well, it’s the end of another season. Although it was shortened quite a bit, we still had a pretty good group of golfers. Hope to see a bit of an increase next year, especially ladies. We want to wish all of you a safe, happy and healthy summer where ever it is you spend it.

The Garden Beautification Club has been busy bees keeping your MSE gardens trimmed, weeded, thinned and even new plants installed. A super thank you Carol Bennett for your hours spent on those flower beds. We have also installed the automatic drip system in the pool pots! (Thanks to Pam Blake & Chris Bennett) Other pool pots received sun tolerant Bromeliads which should thrive over the hot and wet summer. Sue Slick has been cultivating the `babies` from the existing planted Bromeliads which we are interspersing throughout the front beds.

See you next season!! Jim & Betty Sauer

Book Club News

As we head to our Northern homes, some full time MSE residents will be maintaining our gardens (A thank-you to Kathy Schopp, Vivian Eberly & Sue Slick & anyone else who lends a hand over the summer!)

Four members of your book club got together in late March. We enjoyed a socially distanced gathering, lots of discussion about books, chose books for next season and thoroughly enjoyed our get together!

See you ALL next season, Our choice for January 2021 is Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owen. Gervaye Parent will lead the discussion.

Mitzi Klancir & Kathy Schopp, GBC Chairs

In February, Cris Holstrom will be in charge of leading the group of The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelid.

Bingo

The book in March is Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng and Kathy Bartholomew will bring questions for discussion.

While our winter bingo season was cut short, we still paid out $4,992 in winnings! March 11th was our largest crowd at 86 people. A big thanks to the bingo team that put on fun nights for our neighbors and guests. Thanks to Dave Simon for calling bingo, Patti Naughton for setting up the prizes and Dick and Helen Clark for organizing the packets. And thanks as well to the monthly teams who set up tables and chairs, checked bingo and sold packets.

Then in April we have chosen Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover. Deb Floeter has volunteered to be our discussion leader. Next season we have chosen 2 best sellers, a murder mystery and a non-fiction selection for your reading pleasure. More to come next fall with additional information on each of these books.

We will look forward to getting together next winter for conversation, laughs and a chance to win a few dollars.

Enjoy all your time and books read...until next season!

From the Library I am very thankful for the library committee who helped go through all the books, label them and helped haul the discarded ones away. And we had fun doing it!

Joy & Dave Sprague

WHERE DO I FIND THE WORDS… to thank all of you wonderful friends and neighbors for all of your LOVE and Friendship! My daughters & I received a fantastic Surprise Park Birthday Party Drive Around on Saturday, April 11th for my 91st Birthday. I want to thank all you wonderful folks for sitting in your driveway with the temperature in the mid 90's and adhering to CDC guidelines. You all gave me wonderful memories to last me the rest of my lifetime. Thank you for all of the lovely Birthday Cards that I received. I am truly blessed to have you all as dear friends. Did You Know… (From our 40th Birthday Celebration 1/19/20) (In case you missed it.) 1. Did you know…The Duck’s property at 219 Robelina Palm Lane used to be the Horseshoe Pit. 2. Did you know…Sports Week started in 1984 as a one-day event. It then went to a five-day event and now it’s an 8-day event. 3. Did you know…John & Esther DeLorenzo were the first COUPLE to be Grand Marshall’s of the Parade. Prior to that, only an individual was named. One of the criteria for the Grand Marshall was: What did they contribute to our community for that year? 4. Did you know who added medals to the Sports Week? Johnnie DeLorenzo was the man who started the Olympic Theme for Sports Week, adding medals for the Winner’s. 5. A funny story: One day it rained 10 inches. The Marco Lake overflowed and came onto Queen Palm Dr. The fish came up with the water from the Lake and people brought buckets and started filling up their buckets with fish. There was a fish fry all over MSE that day. 6. Did you know…Johnny DeLorenzo sold over 54 homes in MSE from Dec. 1991 to 2004. Deb Henderson sold homes from 2013 to the present. 7. The men responsible for the purchase of our park were Bob Mace, Art Longano, Chuck Callahan & Bill Gorman. 10. By 1984, 100 homes were built. Later, the last home that was built was #70, the Thomason’s home. 11. Did you know…On December 11, 2005, there was a Party for the FROGS of our park. The FROG stands for Faithful, Reliable, Order of the Gateclosers. A group of 25 people worked together to close our gates each night. Every time they came to close the gates, the gates were covered with frogs. There’s a picture of the group in our album in the Library. 12. Did you know…our first and only Toga Party was held on Feb 23, 2006. Many sheets were missing from the beds that night. Some attendees were Vi & Don Bohler. 13. Did you know that MSE had our own Bag Lady? Pat Bekins was our Bag Lady. Her home was under the Marco Bridge. Later, Don Bohler joined her as a homeless bum. They were both hilarious. 14. Did you know…How pushing Johnny DeLorenzo into the pool at the end of the Sports Week Award Ceremony began. It was an accident the first time in 1984, when Sports Week began. Then it became 15. Did you know…how the Men’s Breakfast started? During the 1984-1985 season, other parks were already serving breakfast. A man from our park, named Harry Roberts founded our Breakfast Club. Harry along with Oscar Renault & Gene Bowles, were looking for a pretext to bring the approximately 50 residents together. They agreed to call it, “Feed the Girls.” Danny Colona became the first Head Waiter. One of the original cooks was our own Ray Conner. Another was Sandra Grant’s dad, Jerry Granger. Tickets were not sold as they are today. The cooks and waiters went door to door selling tickets for $2 each. Later the price went up to $2.50. (Continued on Page 14) 13

Did You Know… (Continued)

17. Did you know…who the man was who designed our park? Ed Johnson, Nancy Johnson’s dad, laid out the entire park and the irrigation system. He was brilliant. When the rain ran off the roofs it went into the alley between the houses and back to where the common area is. Ed lived in House #1, now owned by Nancy. The house across the street, #99 was the Office. 18. Did you know…The first Newsletter was compiled around March of 1982 and was called the Gull. It was a one-page newsletter. Doreen Martin was the Editor. It ran until April of 2012. Then, the MSE WORLD was started in the Fall of 2012. Joan Granger, (Sandra Grant’s mom,) Patti Connolly, Cheryl Shiraka & Evelyn Arens got together and learned the Publisher program, and rolled out the first MSE World. Later, Cheryl became the Editor and Evelyn was our calendar girl. Linda Duck became the Editor for the 2018-2019 season and Deb Floeter is our Calendar girl and they are to this date. 19. Did you know…that when you purchased a new home in MSE, they gave you 2 Palm trees for the front of your home and 2 fruit trees for the back of your home. We had grapefruit all over the place. Thank you, Johnny! 21. Did you know…who the artist was who drew the prints hanging on our clubhouse walls. Have you ever heard the name of John Sisson? He’s the artist who did the artwork.. Bob & Linda were married in 1979. They moved to Pennsburg, Pa in 1984. They lived at Sleepy Hollow Ranch for 27 years. Shelter-In-Place Quarantine 2020

Wow! What an ending to our fantastic season. Not exactly the ending we had in mind. But a very definite one that had to be made. Someone once wrote, “We can’t control the wind but we can adjust our sails.” Adjust our sails, we will. Our hero’s celebration will take place next year during sports week. We have no intention of forgetting these men and women. We also have no intention of forgetting the 4 women (Angels) who stepped in to make masks for our community. What a wonderful gesture on their part. They took it upon themselves to work many hours, sometimes till the early morning making masks for everyone who needed one. Our seamstresses were Lori Dittbenner, Cindy Smith, Kris Buscemi, and Linda Duck. Thank you, thank you, thank you from all of us here in MSE. Also thank you to Mitzi Klancir and Ellie Alfeiri for keeping track and delivering all the masks to everyone. We all are so lucky to have the wonderful people who reside in our community. Next year will be different, I am sure. Please continue to be positive and optimistic during these challenges fate has thrown at us. Stay safe on your journey home and return next season. May God Bless this amazing community and all the people we love.
