Setting The tailor shop of Abraham Moscowitz New York City

Directors Notes You are a simple man, in simple surroundings, living a simple life as a tailor.

You don’t hurt anyone; no one hurts you. Then, one evening, out of the blue, a stranger arrives and starts asking questions. Simple questions, perfunctory questions at first for what seems like a legitimate reason, then, eventually, more insistent, more probing. What would you do? How would you react? Personally, I would have thrown the guy out, but Abie doesn’t. Why? Peter Swet gives us two characters who seem very different at first, but they each have backstories which are revealed in the course of the play. At this writing, one question remains unanswered for me: Out of all the backgrounds he could have chosen for his inquisitor, why did the playwright make the insurance investigator an Irish Catholic? Hopefully, through the rehearsal period, the answer will emerge.

Cast Biographies Victor Caroli (Abraham Moscowitz) is a classically trained member (retired) of Actors’ Equity who has performed professionally in dinner theatre, off- and off-off- Broadway and in regional theater (Cleveland Playhouse, Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival). Vic was also asked to be a guest artist at the University of Rhode Island where he spent three months working with authors of new plays.

After a successful career as a voice-over artist,Vic has also performed with the Naples Players for the last 12 years. He is excited to be working with the Marco Players for the first time. He’d like to thank his Princess Bride, Patti, without whom he would have had a much more difficult time learning all these lines.

Greg Madera (James T. Shannon) has been involved in one way or another in theater since his high school days in Marion, SC. After earning a BA in Theater from Limestone College, Greg began his professional career at the Cumberland County Playhouse in Crossville, TN. Greg has worn many hats and is happy working with The Marco Players. Thanks for letting me “play.”

Production Crew Mitch Eil (Stage Manager / Sound Board Operator) wishes to thank Beverly Dahlstrom and Sandy Tenney for this opportunity to return to the theatre after an absence of over twenty years, as well as the director, cast and crew of The Interview for their patience during his learning process. He looks forward to contributing to future productions.

Jim Houghton (Light Board Operator) grew up on Marco Island and graduated from Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida with a degree in Psychology. When not in the tech booth, Jim is one of the gym rats at the Marco Fitness Club. He spends his summers in New York State on the St. Lawrence River.

Jim Swanker (Master Carpenter/Set Design) is a fine artist and a master carpenter. After retiring from East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania, Jim and his wife Karen, also an artist, settled here on Marco Island. They spend winters on Marco Island and summers with family in Jackson Hole. Since joining TMP, Jim has designed and/or built sets for over 21 different stage productions.

This season, his most recent creation is the Donor Plaque located in the hallway.

Jim is a member of The Marco Players Board of Directors.

Karen Swanker (Art Coordinator) moved to Marco Island along with her husband, Jim, in 2004 after retiring from a career in advertising. Always on a course involving art, a high school contest led to a scholarship at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia. After graduation, she attended Hussian School of Art in Philly. A move to the Poconos led to the opening of the Village Craftsman at Blueberry Hill in the Poconos where, for 11 years, she taught crafts to customers, schools and scout groups. She returned to college to finish her degree in Fine Arts for Art at Eastroudsburg University. After 12 years doing advertising for Trent Graphics, she moved to Marco Island and has become involved with the artist community here. She was a member of the Artist Colony at the Esplanade for two years, and is currently on the Board of Directors ofr MIFA. Her touches at the theater include organizing and hanging the artwork on the Theater Gallery Wall and filling in where needed sewing pillows, making props and painting scenery.

Jan Weiss (Set Decorator and Set Painter) comes to us by way of New York where she pursued a successful career in interior design. For the past four years, she has staged model apartments, corporate lobbies and single family homes for The Manhattan Building Company. She has decorated sets for Come Blow Your Horn Remember Me, Seascape,The Fourth Wall,Take Five, On Golden Pond, Baggage, Chapter Two, A Christmas Carol,Twelve Angry Jurors,Visiting Mr. Green,The Last of the Red Hot Lovers, Plaza Suite,The 39 Steps,The Last Romance, Deathtrap, Absalom, A Christmas Story, Apt. 3A and Art. Jan is a member of The Marco Players Board of Directors.

Production Crew Continued Kay Riegel (Costumer) is originally from Michigan. Kay has been on-stage and back-stage for many years. She has been involved with theater throughout high school, college, and for 30 years in a historic,129-year old opera house. Kay joined TMP this season and has costumed Absalom, A Christmas Story, The Fox on the Fairway, Apt. 3A and Art. Ken Carpenter (Carpenter Assistant) divides his time between western Michigan and Marco Island. Retired from a career in the business forms industry, he considers it a privilege (and a great learning experience) to take orders from Master Carpenter Jim Swanker.

The Cultural Alliance of Marco Island and Goodland (CAMIG)* Along with the Naples Holocaust Museum Pay Tribute to the 10th Annual International Holocaust Remembrance Day CAMIG members collaborate to bring to Marco Island cultural activities intended to honor and show respect for the victims and survivors of the Holocaust.

The Interview, written by Peter Swet, is about Abie Moscowitz, an aging Jewish tailor (Victor Caroli) who owns a run-down tailor shop. He receives a visit from James Shannon (Greg Madera), a workaholic investigator who comes across as arrogant and insensitive and is determined to find out the reasons Abie wants to increase the value of his life insurance policy. Reluctant and guarded at first, Abie becomes more agitated under Shannon’s relentless questioning. As buried truths come out, so do Abie’s emotional memories about his past life and the death of his family.

The Interview is on stage February 11 – March 1 at The Marco Players Theater.

A private performance will be given on February 23 at the Marco Island Center for the Arts.

The Paper Clips Project, by middle school students from Whitwell, Tennessee, created a monument for the Holocaust victims. It started in 1998 as a simple 8th-grade project to study other cultures. Paper clips were collected because some people from Norway wore them on their lapels as a symbol of resistance against Nazi occupation during World War II.

The Paper Clips Documentary will be shown on February 19 at 7:00 pm by the Marco Island Historical Society in the Rose History Auditorium.

The moving documentary, entitled Paper Clips and originally released theatrically in 2004, captures how these students responded to lessons about the Holocaust and how a

10th Annual International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Member of AACT committed group of children and educators provided hope and inspiration to countless others around the globe.

The Boxcar, as represented in the award winning documentary Paper Clips, will be on display at the Marco Island Historical Museum from February 11 – 28.

The Paper Clips Project extended over several years and in 2001, the school dedicated a Children’s Holocaust Memorial, which includes an authentic German railcar filled with 11 million paperclips of which 6 million represent the Jews killed and 5 million represent gypsies, homosexuals and the mentally handicapped who were also killed by the Nazis.

CAMIG is an organization whose mission is to promote cultural awareness and collaborate on activities that enhance the quality of life in Marco Island and Goodland.

Members include Marco Island Historical Society, Goodland Arts Alliance, Marco Island Center for the Arts, Marco Island Foundation for the Arts, Marco Players Theater, Island Theater Company and the Greater Marco Family YMCA.

From The President Dear Marco Players Theater Patrons, My fellow Board Members and I welcome you to the 40th Anniversary season at The Marco Players. We are grateful and thankful for the many patrons who have continued to enthusiastically support our performing arts theater.

Each year, we have been fortunate to engage many talented performers in our area, and this year is no different. We not only have our four main productions that will make you laugh and touch your heart, but we have the delightful pleasure of bringing back Shakespeare in Paradise with their hilarious production of The Merry Wives of Windsor.

In addition, our talented Marco Island Academy students partnered with the Marco Island Shakespeare Festival performed the holiday show, Yuletide Shakespeare and will perform Macbeth in May. For our audiences who love improv, watch for Wow Improv’s March evening performance, Let’s Make Stuff Up. It’s intended for the whole family and audience participation is encouraged!

Your Saturday Box Lunch Series welcomes back Wow Improv and their comedy antics along with Janina Birtolo’s historical production about Margaret Sanger, Woman Rebel. As an additional surprise, returning from our summer success, A Double Dip of Comedy, is the hilarious production of Wanda’s Visit.
