About the Lecture
Each year, the LSU Health Shreveport Department of Neurosurgery invites a renowned neurosurgeon to serve as keynote speaker for the event and a graduate of our residency program to serve as the Alumni Speaker. The speakers provide the local medical community the opportunity to gain new insight and increase knowledge in the field of neurosurgery. The Mary Louise and Ben Levy, Jr. Endowed Professorship in Neurosurgery was instituted by the Levy Family in 2004 as an enduring gift to the community.
Mr. and Mrs. Levy were active in several civic and charitable organizations throughout the Shreveport-Bossier community. The Levy Lecture is a pillar of our residency education program and an opportunity to honor our graduating residents.

Learning Objectives: After participating in this CME activity, the medical professional should be better able to: 1. Assess the various classifications of large and giant aneurysms 2. Compare the various hypotheses about the pathogenesis of large and giant aneurysms 3. Evaluate the role of surgery, therapy, and radiosurgery in the treatment of large and giant aneurysms
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this discussion, participants will be able to: 1. Articulate the ingredients necessary to become a great skull base neurosurgeon 2. Prioritize the goals that are felt by the experts to be most important in training residents 3. Compare the profile of several great skull base neurosurgeons and understand what the commonalities are

Alumni Speaker
This year's alumni speaker is Dr. Cedric Shorter, renowned neurosurgeon with a specialty in complex cranial procedures and 2012 graduate of the LSU Health Shreveport Neurosurgery Residency Program. Dr. Shorter has a passion for treating complex cranial pathology. He sees and treats a variety of brain tumors and pituitary tumors along with compressive nerve syndromes, such as trigeminal neuralgia. He has also treated numerous cerebral vascular conditions such as cerebral aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). Dr. Shorter graduated with a degree in Biology from Northwestern State University in Louisiana in 1997. He went on to receive an additional degree in Biochemistry from Louisiana State University in 2000. In 2005, Dr. Shorter received his medical degree from LSU Health Shreveport, and completed his Neurosurgery residency at LSU Health Shreveport in 2012. After his residency, he went on to complete a fellowship in Skull Base/Cerebrovascular surgery at Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine in Indianapolis under the mentorship of Dr. Troy Payner in 2013. He is an active member of the American Association of Neurosurgeons (AANS), Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), and the North American Skull Base Society (NASBS). Dr. Shorter was also appointed to the NASBS Surgical Simulation Task Force 2016-2018. He has numerous publications and has presented at regional and national meetings.
