Organization Summary
The Edward G. Schlieder Educational Foundation is an independent foundation based in New Orleans, Louisiana. Its primary focus is to support educational institutions in Louisiana, particularly those involved in biomedical research.

Organization Background
Key Facts
A Louisiana native, Edward G. Schlieder (died 1948) was a successful businessman in New Orleans. He endeavored to support educational initiatives and sought little recognition for his efforts. He loved nature and loved to hunt. Mr. Schlieder never married and had no heirs.
In 1944, the Edward G. Schlieder Educational Foundation was established as a modest organization that has since grown to a sizeable and reputable institution.
Mrs. Elizabeth “Betsy” Nalty currently serves as the President of the Edward G. Schlieder Educational Foundation.
Betsy became involved with the Edward G. Schlieder Educational Foundation through her late husband, Donald Nalty. Donald Nalty was a banker with Hibernia National Bank (now Capital One) in New Orleans and served as President of the Edward G. Schlieder Educational Foundation until the early 2000s.
Allen Copping, President of the Louisiana State University System introduced Donald Nalty to the Pennington Biomedical Research Center (PBRC) and its mission and programs. Mr. Nalty, in turn, garnered support for the PBRC through both Hibernia Bank and the Edward G. Schlieder Educational Foundation. Copping worked with Mr. Nalty to establish an Endowed Chair at the PBRC that was funded between the 2 entities.

Recent Activity
In November 2023, Denise Flock-Williams, Grant Writer at PBRF, and Bri Barrett, Chief Development Officer at PBRF, provided a brief stewardship report to Robert Edgecombe, III, via email. This report included an update and images of the equipment purchased with the most recent funding support from the Edward G. Schlieder Educational Foundation.
In April 2023, Ritchie Goebel, then Senior Director of Development at the PBRF, took Chris Morrison, PhD, of the PBRC, to meet Betsy Nalty and Robert Edgecombe, III, for lunch in New Orleans to thank them for their past support. They were grateful for the meeting and were very impressed with Dr. Morrison.
In February 2023, Goebel and Dr. Kirwan met Mrs. Nalty over lunch in New Orleans. She reiterated her support of Pennington Biomedical and indicated that we should work closely with Edgecombe on future initiatives while keeping her in the loop.
In 2022, the Edward G. Schlieder Educational Foundation gave the PBRC $585,000 for the acquisitionofresearchequipmentaftercontactingthe PBRF requesting a proposal. Those funds secured the followingequipment:
2 Oroboros NextGen-O2k all-in-ones:
The complete experimental system for high-resolution fluorespirometry, redox biology and PhotoBiology allows for simultaneous monitoring of oxygen consumption together with either Coenzyme Q redox state, NAD(P)H redox state, cyclic voltammetry, H2O2 production (AmR), mtmembrane potential (TMRM, Safranin and Rhodamine 123), Ca2+uptake capacity(CaG),ATPproduction(MgG)orphotobiologymeasurements.
Illumina NextSeq 2000 Sequencing system:
This is an integrated system for automated generation of DNA clonal clusters by bridge amplification, sequencing, primary analysis, and secondary analysis. This sequencing system will be housed in the Genomics Core and represents an upgrade of our existing Illumina NextSeq500.
ABI QuantStudio Quantitative PCR (qPCR):
The requested QuantStudio qPCR device will also be housed in the Genomics Core. Quantitative PCR is the gold standard methodology for measuringgeneexpression.
In 2021, the Edward G. Schlieder Educational Foundation gave the PBRC $343,720 for the acquisition of additional research equipment.
