History of Danesfield House
The present site is geographically recognized as ‘Danes Field Camp’, the site of a prehistoric hillfort. The current neoTudor style house was completed in 1901 for Robert William Hudson, son of Victorian soap magnate, Robert Spear Hudson and designed by architect W.H. Romaine Walker.
A remodelling of the house took place during the 1920s, with the addition of formal terraced gardens to provide a grand setting for the house. In 1941, Danesfield was requisitioned by the Air Ministry for the RAF to set up a Joint Service Imagery Intelligence Unit (IMINT) and became RAF Medmenham, specializing in aerial photographic intelligence. Danesfield House was to IMINT what Bletchley Park was to Signals Intelligence (SIGINT).
Following the War, the property was bought by the Air Ministry to become the divisional headquarters for No.90 Group RAF Signals The house became officers’ accommodation and the Grand Hall was the officers’ mess.
In 1977, the RAF sold Danesfield House to Ca Foods for their corporate headquarters. A later, following a sale to private owners, a of extensive renovation began and in July Danesfield House opened as a luxury country house hotel.
