MARSEILLE: The Board of Directors of the CMA CGM Group, a Global player in sea, land, air and logistics solutions, met under the chairmanship of Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, to review the financial statements for the first quarterof2023.

Commenting on the results for the period, Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the CMA CGM Group, said: "After two exceptional years, our industry has entered a phase of normalization due to the slowdown in global growth, inflation and a destocking phenomenon that is continuinginmanypartsoftheworld.

Logistics

Thefourth-quarterof2022’strendsremainedinplay in the first-quarter of 2023, with challenging market conditions in the transport and logistics industry. Freight demand continued to slow, spurring a rapid normalizationofspotfreightrates.

RevenuestoodatUSD12.7billioninthefirstquarter of2023,drivenmostlybytheGroup’smaritimeshipping business. EBITDA came to USD 3.4 billion, representinga61.3%decreaseandanEBITDAmargin of27%,down21.7points.

Net income, Group share amounted to USD2.0billion.Financialresourcesnetofdebttotalled USD 6.2 billion on March 31, 2023, up USD 1.5 billion fromDecember31,2022.

Shipping

Consolidated revenue from maritime shipping operations amounted to USD 8.9 billion, down 40.3% from first-quarter 2022. EBITDA totalled USD 3,0 billion, 64.3% lower than in first-quarter 2022. EBITDA margin came in at 34.4%, down 23.1 points. Average revenue per TEU amounted to USD 1,766, down37%fromfirst-quarter2022.

In all, 5.0 million TEUs were carried in the first quarter of 2023, down 5.3% from the prior-year period. Thisdeclineinthefirstquarterof2023isattributableto severalfactors:

• household consumption of goods in Europe and North America has fallen sharply amid i) price inflation and ii) a rebound in consumer spending on services,especiallytourism,leisure,etc.

Revenue from logistics operations totalled USD3.9billioninthefirst-quarteroftheyear.

EBITDA stood at USD 343 million, a 36.9% increase on first-quarter2022.

This growth in activity reflects the inclusion of the acquisitions of Ingram CLS, Gefco and Colis Privé in the scope of consolidation as from the second-quarter of 2022, while the sea and air freight activities were simultaneously returning to normal in line with market dynamics. The various acquisitions have strengthened CMA CGM's offering of end-to-end supply chain services foritscustomers.

In the first-quarter of 2023, the CMA CGM Group also signed an agreement with La Poste group to establish a closerbusinessrelationshipcapitalizingontheirrespective expertiseinparceldelivery,transportationandstorage.

Otheractivities

Revenue from other activities (port terminals, CMA CGM Air Cargo, media etc.) increased by 5.3% to USD 405 million. EBITDA came in at USD45 million, down 47%, in particular reflecting the easing of port congestion.

Outlook

Macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty, tensions inthesupply–demandbalanceasnewcapacityarriveson themarket

Second-half 2022 trends continued to prevail in 2023, with deteriorated conditions in the transport and logistics industry.

Macroeconomic forecasts for 2023 anticipate moderate global GDP growth over the year, in light of inflationary pressure which is dragging down consumer spending in OECD countries. However, this may stabilize later in the year. Nevertheless, new capacity delivered overthecomingquartersisexpectedtocontinueweighing onfreightratesincontainershipping.

In this environment, the first quarter is expected to be thebestquarteroftheyearastheGroup'sfinancialresults continuetoreturntonormal.TheGroupisconfidentinits ability to weather the cycle thanks to its combined transportandlogisticsstrategyanditsfinancialstrength.

The Group will also continue to integrate its recent acquisitionswhilekeepingoperatingcostsundercontrol.

Drewry: World Container Index down 2% last week

LONDON: Drewry’s detailed assessment for Thursday, 25 May 2023

The composite index has decreased by 2% last week, and has dropped by 78% when compared with the same week last year.

The latest Drewry WCI composite index of $1,685 per 40-foot container is now 84% below the peak of $10,377 reached in September 2021. It is 37% lower than the 10-year average of $2,688, indicating a return to more normal prices, but remains 19% higher than average 2019 (pre-pandemic) rates of $1,420.

The average composite index for the year-to-date is $1,859 per 40ft container, which is $828 lower than the 10-year average ($2,688 mentioned above).

The composite index decreased by 2% to $1,685.32 per 40ft container, and is 78% lower than the same weekin2022.FreightratesonRotterdam–NewYorkfell10%or $465 to $3,969 per feu. Rates on Shanghai –New York slid by 2% to settle at $2,760 per 40ft box. Apart from the above trades, rates dipped by a meagre 1% on majority of others. Rates on Shanghai – Genoa and Shanghai – Rotterdam dropped to $2,169 and $1,530 per 40ft container, respectively. Similarly, rates on Shanghai – Los Angeles and Los Angeles –Shanghai dropped $1,798 and $1,023 per feu, respectively and those on Rotterdam – Shanghai dropped to $587 per 40ft box. However, rates on New York – Rotterdam inched up 1% to $844 per feu. Drewry expects East-West spot rates on routes other thanthetransatlantictobestableinthenextfewweeks.

SMP Kolkata expects 14% growth in FY 23-24

KOLKATA: Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP), Kolkata (SMPK),formerlyKolkataPortTrust, is looking to achieve close to 14 per cent growth in business in 2023-24.

According to Rathendra Raman, Chairman, SMPK, a few key focus areas have been identified for growing its cargo handling capacity and transforming into a green port by setting up solar projects both in Kolkata Dock System and Haldia Dockandincreasingforestcover.

“The port is on the growth path. In 2022-23 we recorded nearly

13 per cent growth in cargo handling at 65.66 million tonnes. We had a net surplus of Rs. 304 crore, which is an improvement of 150 per cent compared to the previous years. This year we are looking to sustain this growth and also grow at close to 14percent,”Ramansaid.

With a view to reduce congestion and increase port capacity, SMPK is planning to develop extended port gate system at Balagarh at an investment of around Rs. 445 crore, out of which around Rs. 343 crore wouldbeinvestedthroughPPP.Close to Rs. 98 crore has already been

allocated for basic infrastructure development, and the port plans to pursue PPP project with an investor tomanageportactivities,hesaid.The Balagarh facility is expected to be a mixed use port capable of handling 1.6mtofcoaland85,000containers.

The port is betting big on growing traffic to Nepal, Bangladesh and Northeast India through the IndoBangladesh Protocol (IBP) route. Earlier this month, it had sent an inaugural shipment carrying 20,000 bags having 1,000 metric tonnes of cement to operationalise the Sittwe PortinRakhineStateofMyanmar.

Economic recession in Germany may impact certain export sectors from India: CII

NEW DELHI: Economic recession in Germany is likely to impact India's exports from various sectors like chemicals, machinery, apparel and electronics to the Europeannation,ChairmanoftheCII Committee on Export-Import Sanjay Budhiahassaid.

He, however, said that it is too early to see the impact of the economic recession in Germany on India'sexports.

Germany, the world's fourthlargest economy, is facing recession as its GDP fell 0.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2023, following a decline of 0.5percentinthefourthquarterofthe lastyear.

“In2022,4.4percentofIndia'stotal exports were to Germany, concentrated mainly in sectors like

organic chemicals, machinery, electronics, apparel, footwear, articles of iron and steel and leather goods.

“Even though it's too early to see theimpactof Germany'srecessionon India's exports, the sectors mentioned above will likely be the onesmostaffected,”hetoldPTI.

He said the entire European Union is dealing with the rising energy prices that have led to recession in Germany for two consecutivequarters.

“With its largest economy entering into a recession, the EU as a whole is bound to feel contractionary pressures as well. Around 14 per cent of India's total exports is to the EU, with Germany being the top destination of Indian exports,

followed by Netherlands, Belgium, Italy,andFrance,”headded.

On investments from Germany, he said that a recession in the Europeannationmighthaveanimpact on its investments in India. However, it is likely that German companies may seek cheaper alternatives duringrecessionaryconditions.

“This can lead to minimal effects on German investments in India,” Budhiaadded.

LookingatIndia'sFDIfrom2000to 2022, Germany ranks 9th in the total FDI inflow, and it has cumulatively investedoverUSD13.6billioninareas like transportation, electrical equipment, metallurgical industries, services sector (particularly insurance), chemicals, construction activity,tradingandautomobiles.

Negotiations on supply chain agreement under IPEF substantially concludes : Govt

DETROIT : The Commerce Ministry(MoCI)said,membersofthe 14-nation bloc IPEF have ‘substantially’ concluded the negotiations on the supply chains agreement, including improving logistics and connectivity; promoting investments in critical sectors and cooperation for mitigation of disruptions to ensure business continuity, on Sunday, 28th May. The IPEF was launched jointly by the US and other partner countries of the Indo-Pacific region on May 23 in Tokyo. The framework is structured around four pillars relating to trade, supplychains,cleaneconomyandfair economy (issues like tax and anticorruption). India has joined all the pillarsexceptthetradeone.

The talks on supply chains, clean

economy and fair economy were held on May 27 in Detroit, US. Commerce and Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal virtually participated in the ministerialmeeting.

“At this meeting, negotiations under the Supply Chains (Pillar-II) were substantially concluded; while good progress was reported under the otherIPEFPillars,”theMinistrysaid.

Theproposedagreementonsupply chains aims to increase the resilience, efficiency, productivity, sustainability, transparency, diversification, security, fairness and inclusivity of their supply chains through collaborative activities and individual actionstakenbyeachIPEFpartner.

IPEF partners will undertake the necessary steps, including further domestic consultations and a legal

review, to prepare a final text of the proposed IPEF supply chain agreement.

Once finalised, the proposed agreement will be subject to IPEF partners’ domestic processes for signature, followed by ratification, acceptanceorapproval.

Under this pact, the partners also seek to improve crisis coordination and response to supply chain disruptions and work together to supportthetimelydeliveryofaffected goodsduringacrisis.

Apressstatementissuedafterthe meeting by IPEF members said that the proposed supply chain pact contemplates the establishment of three new IPEF Supply Chain bodies to facilitate cooperation among the partners.

New Mangalore Port’s Container cargo gets boost

MANGALORE: New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) recorded one of the best performances in container cargo handling in 2022-23 with its handling of 1.65 lakh TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) as against 1.52 lakh TEUs in 2021-22.

Stakeholders from the sector feel that the regular calling of feeder vessels, introduction of a mainline service and efficiency improvement are some of the factors for growth in containercargoatNMPA.

dedicated berth for containers have helpedreducethevesselstayatberth from the earlier 48 hours to an average22-30hoursnow.

DirectroutetoJebelAli Sequeira said Mangalore can now boast of a direct Jebel Ali sailing with a transit time of only 7-8 days against the earlier 17-21 days. A direct connection from Bangladesh promises the prospects of pulses to arrive at Mangalore and reach their market hubs in and around Bengaluruinsteadofarrivingatports suchasChennai,TuticorinandNhava Sheva.

Stating that New Mangalore has successfully tapped the traditional

cargoes such as reefer, sea food, cashew and coffee, Sequeira said the challenge now remains to tap the huge potential lying in the hinterland regions of Bengaluru, Mysuru, Davangere, Haveri, Hubballi, and northernpartsofKerala.

Invest in logistics to make India’s products competitive : Andhra CM

NEWDELHI:Callingforahealthy flow of investments into the logistics sectorinIndia,AndhraPradeshChief Minister Shri Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, who was at the 8th NITI Aayog Governing Council session in Delhi, said that high logistics costs are hampering India’s growth and curtailing the competitiveness of its productsglobally.

Underlining the share of logistics in India’s GDP, which stands at a high 14percentcomparedto7.5percentin theUnitedStates,Reddyemphasised the crucial nature of the sector and

thecostsinvolved.

Hesoughtcontinuinginvestments as seen in the past nine years to ensure rapid economic progress of thecountry.

The Chief Minister submitted a note to the Governing Council showcasing the steps taken by Andhra Pradesh to strengthen sectors such as logistics, public health, skill development and social and economic empowerment of women, said a press note shared by theStateGovernment.

From mobile phones to chips, Indian manufacturing & its exports enters golden era

NEW DELHI: In 2018, South Korean giant Samsung inaugurated the World’s largest mobile factory in India. The 35-acre facility at Sector 81 in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in officially inaugurating it together—placingthecountryfirmly ontheglobalmanufacturingmap.

Even before that, the Country saw a massive turnaround in mobile manufacturing. Before 2014, thereweretwomobilemanufacturing factories and now, more than 200 manufacturing units have been set up in India, producing millions of devices and exporting them to other countries.

Fast forward to 2023. Led by locally-manufactured mobile phones, India’s electronics industry saw

record exports of electronic goods at an estimated Rs 1,85,000 crore in FY22-23 — compared to Rs 1,16,936 crore in FY21-22 — marking a whopping58percentincrease.

According to data by the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), mobile phone exports made history by crossing the USD 10 billion threshold for the first time in any fiscal year, reaching an estimated USD 11.12 billion (over Rs 90,000 crore)inFY23.

This growth has been primarily driven by the Apple ecosystem, which alone grossed a record $5 billion in exportsfromIndiainFY23.

The country has now taken a leap in manufacturing IT hardware (laptops, servers, tablets), semiconductorsandmore.

Vedanta-Foxconn Semiconductors Limited (VFSL),

a joint venture between Foxconn and Vedanta Group, is one such example. Vedanta and Foxconn signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat Government lastyeartoinvestRs1,54,000croreto set up the semiconductor and displaymanufacturingplantwhichis India’sfirst.

In April, Vedanta Group signed MoUswith20Koreancompaniesfrom the display glass industry for the development of an electronics manufacturinghubintheCountry.

The Centre last week approved an updated production-linked incentive (PLI)schemeforIThardware,nearly doubling the overall outlay for the schemetoaroundRs17,000crore.

The tenure of the programme will be applicable for six years and the Government expects investments worthRs2,430croreinthescheme.

APM Terminals Bahrain to become region’s rst fully solar energy-powered seaport

Bahrain, the operator of Khalifa Bin Salman Port, has officially announced the launch of a ground-breaking solar power projectworthapproximatelyBHD3.8million(USD 10 Million), which will make the port energy selfsufficientbytheendof2023.

By implementing this project, the terminal will reduce its carbon emissions by 65% while also securing a reliable and sustainable source of energy,effectivelymakingKhalifaBinSalmanPort theregion’sfirstfullyenergy-sufficientseaport.

The solar power project is part of APM Terminals' global decarbonisation plans, which aim to reduce greenhousegasemissionsby70%by2030andachievenet zero by 2040. As a subsidiary of A.P. Moller-Maersk, APM Terminals is committed to leading the way in promoting sustainability within the maritime industry, and the solar power project in Bahrain is one of the main pillarsinitsoveralldecarbonisationjourney.

Furthermore,thedrivingforcebehindthesolarpower initiative is in line with the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa for a more prosperous and sustainable Bahrain and follows the carbon-neutral commitmentmadebyBahrain'sCrownPrinceandPrime Minister, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa to reduce the kingdom’s emissions by 30% by 2035andachievenetzeroby2060.

the port is in line with the vision of HM The King and the commitment of HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister for Bahrain, as well as APM Terminals' global goal of being safer, better, and bigger" shared Farooq Zuberi, Chief Finance Ofcer and Interim Managing Director, APM Terminals Bahrain. He continued, "We are constantly striving to develop more sustainable andresponsiblebusinesspracticesinordertoservebetter ourcustomersandthecommunitiesinwhichwework.”

By the end of the solar implementation project, APM Terminals Bahrain will have installed 20,000 solar photovoltaic panels capable of generating 18.5 Gigawatts of electricity per year. This renewable energy source will produce clean and sustainable energy for powering various port operations, including container handling, crane operations, and lighting, setting an example for the entire maritime industry. APM Terminals Bahrain is excited to contribute to the government’s efforts to realise a carbon-neutral Bahrain and be part of A.P. Moller – Maersk’s goal to achieve net-zero GHG emissions in 2040 across all businessentities.

WCO CWOF marks a signicant milestone in designing the Future of Work in Customs and trade

BRUSSELS: Following the agreed work plan of the WCO Customs Work Organization Forum (CWOF) and the outstanding achievements of its first meeting held on 13December2023,theWCOorganizedvirtuallyon23May 2023, the 2nd meeting of the CWOF with the participation of high-level representatives from WCO Members and partners, including the private sector, international organizations, academia, private consultants, and civil society.

Through the CWOF’s meetings and activities, the WCO is aiming at creating a knowledge management ecosystem where experiences, practices and initiatives are generated taking into consideration all perspectives (client, staff, process, technology….) but also shared effectively with all Customs and Trade communities through several channels (guide, compendium, conference, forum, Community of practices, capacity building…).

During this meeting, the participants had the

opportunity to hear from Customs Administrations (all WCO six regions represented) who have engaged in a learning process and have adopted new sustainable working models in the new normal, including innovative approachestoCustomsWorksetupandCustoms’day-today operations, Workplace design and Workforce management, to share their initiatives, challenges, benefits and way forwards. Six insightful presentations covering the three areas of the Customs organization were delivered, including (i) Creating a Maritime Workforce NZ Customs Service, (2) Reengineering Nigeria Customs Service operational processes and DigitalTransformation,(iii)WorkplaceDesigninCanada Border Services Agency as part of the Future of Work, (iv) Workplace Design Strategy in Finish Customs in the New Normal, (v) Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority’s Programme for Employees’ Well-being, and (vi) Fostering Trust in the Employment Relationship at theMauritiusRevenueAuthority.
