JNPA posts impressive TAT (22 Hrs); Puts India amongst Top Performers Globally

NAVI MUMBAI: A month after the record handling performance for the la st F Y, Ja wa ha rl al Ne hr u Po rt Au th or it y (JNPA), India’s premier container port, has achieved another feat when it set a global benchmark in container cargo handling According to the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) Report, 2023, published by the World Bank, JNPA has an impressive turnaround time (TAT) of just 22 hours (equal to 0.9 days), putting Indiaamongstthetopperformers.

JNPAwasabletoachievethefeatdue to various measures taken in reducing the dwell time. Most importantly the operational efficiency of the terminal operators has been the biggest contributor along with the better landside- rail and road connectivity, introductionofCentralisedParkingPlaza (CPP), Digitization of the processes; streamlining berthing and unberthing of vessels; deploying more tugs for smooth transition of the vessel etc are some of the other initiatives that JNPA has undertaken to facilitate efficient functioningoftheport.

2.3bn from USD 7.3bn. The full-year guidance remains unchanged, with Q1 expected to be the strongest quarteroftheyear.

Cont’d. from Pg. 3 Shri Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman of JNPA, said, “This is exciting news for all of us at JNPA. Just last month, we achieved a record of handling 6.05 million TEUs in 2022-23, the World Bank data reiterates that

our efficiency parameters are better than many countries as per LPI 2023 report and we as a team are committed to further reduce the logistics cost and time fortheexport-importtrade.”

Shri Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman of JNPA and Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Deputy Chairman, JNPA have congratulated the team for this remarkable achievement.

A.P. Moller – Maersk reports solid Q1 results

Cont’d. from Pg. 3

“We delivered a solid financial performance in a challenging market with lower demand caused by a continued destocking. Visibility remains low for the remainder of the year and moving through this market normalisation, we remain focused on proactively managing costs. As we adjust to a radically changed business environment, we continue to support our customers in addressing their supply chain challenges. We are pleased to note that customers continue to value the integrated logistics solutions and close partnership weprovide,”says VincentClerc,CEOofMaersk.

OceanrevenuedecreasedbyUSD5.7bntoUSD9.9bn. Profitability for the quarter was significantly lower comparedtoQ12022,primarilyduetolowerfreightrates and volumes, as demand softened. However, proactive cost containment measures have been successful, andtheOceancontractnegotiationseasonisproceeding inlinewithexpectations.

In Logistics & Services, revenue grew 21% to USD 3.5bn driven by the consolidation of acquisitions. Organically, Q1 was affected by lower volumes caused by inventory corrections, especially with North American and European retailers, which was partially offset by new commercial wins. Additionally, underlying business performance was impacted by lower rates in Air Freight andweakerdemandineCommerce.

In Terminals, the top line was affected by lower

volumes and storage income, both a factor of lower demand and the release of port congestion. Revenue in Terminals decreased to USD 876m from USD 1.1bn, but strong cost control contributed to continued solid financialperformanceinTerminals.

Q1 was marked by continued destocking in Europe and especially North America. While it is difficult to predict the exact timing, Maersk expects volumes to graduallypickupinthesecondhalfoftheyear.

Guidancefor2023

Guidanceremainsunchangedandisstillbasedonthe expectationthatinventorycorrectionwillbecompleteby the end of H1, leading to a more balanced demand environment, that 2023 global GDP growth remains muted, and that the global ocean container market will grow in a range of -2.5% to +0.5%. Ocean expects to grow inlinewithmarket.

HYDERABAD: The Bandar port, with over 2,000 years historical significance in terms of imports and exports, is going to get revived very soon. With the decision of the State government to commence port construction works, the Machilipatnam area is going to get back its glory as well as the people’s

long-cherished dream also will be fulfilled.

According to higher authorities, Machilipatnam Port construction works would commence in this month. Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy will formally lay foundation stone to start port works onMay22inMachilipatnam.

Airport, Seaport, Railway companies can now bid for road building

NEW DELHI: Airport, seaport, railway and metro rail builders can now join in the task of building highways under a new Government order aimed at giving a thrust to limping road construction. In a key reform, the governmenthasputcoreinfrastructure development firms on its list of companies that are eligible to build capital-intensivehighways.

So far, only specialist and

experienced road builders have been allowed to participate in such bids. The government hopes opening up the sector will bring in more competition, lowercostsandspeedupconstruction. Companies with experience in building airports—which include air strips—ports, railways and metro rail projects will be able to bid for constructing highways and expressways.

The move comes as the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and other road building agencies have lagged their highway-building targets for two years in a row. NHAI is also sitting on a debt of around Rs. 3 trillion. Analysts said as more road projects come up for bids, expanding the field also addresses the problem of contractors being unwilling to take up toomanyprojectsatonetime.

India’s Exports likely to touch $900 billion in FY24

NEW DELHI: India’s exports of goods and services could touch $900 billioninthecurrentfinancialyear,up from $770 billion in the previous year, keeping resilient despite global headwinds, a top official of a grouping ofexporterssaid.

Merchandise exports could expand to between $495 billion and $500 billion, while services exports could touch $400 billion in the year ending March 2024, said Ajay Sahai, Director General of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO). Overseas demand remains strong in manymarkets, headded.

Trade Minister Shri Piyush Goyal urged exporters to explore new markets, however, in view of the possible impact of war in Ukraine and aglobalslowdown.

“The times ahead are going to be

very, very tough,” Goyal said speaking at a industry event late on Wednesday, while warning of the falloutfromtheconflict.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s government has set an export target of $2 trillion by 2030, offering benefits to boost exports of electronics, engineering, pharmaceutical, andothergoods.

India’s exports have increased by more than $200 billion in the last two years, led by a surge in exports of software, mobile exports, and agriculturalandpetroleumproducts.

Exportsofengineering, gems, and jewellery goods have slowed in the lastfewmonths, however.

Exports of agricultural, petroleum, and electronic goods remained strong in the Western markets due to pricing factors while exports to Asian and

Middle east countries have grown substantially, exporterssaid.

Sahai, who was part of a 50-member business delegation to Russiarecently, saidtherewasahuge demandforIndiangoods, particularly food, after the Western sanctions imposedovertheUkrainewar.

“Indian exporters are hopeful that both countries would soon work out a mechanism allowing payments in local currencies that would facilitate the shipments of Indian goods to Russia,”Sahaisaid.

But Indian officials have said Russia was reluctant to accept payments in the rupee currency for itsoilexports.

India has not explicitly condemned Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine and has called for dialoguetoresolvehostilities.

Customs system glitch chokes shipments at ports Pan India, traders pay heavy demurrage charges

NEW DELHI: Several shipments havebeenstuckatIndianportsdueto glitches in the customs IT system, leading to importers paying heavy demurrage charges. According to trade reports, shipments worth Rs3,000-5,000crorearestuckpanIndia.

Importers have alleged that the dutypaymentoptionontheICEGATE system is still not functioning properly. Since April 1, heavy demurrage charges have been paid by trade/importers, to the tune of aroundRs500-700crore.

The Customs Department had launched a new updated IT system on April 1 for payment of duty by importers, including an electronic cash ledger payment system aimed at ensuring ease of doing business.

However, importers claim that they are still facing issues in making payments through the ICEGATE system. In response to the situation, customs authorities have started manual clearance of goods to facilitatetrade.

Major Ports see cargo traffic rise

NEW DELHI: India’s Major Ports saw a bare 1.30 per cent-odd rise in cargo traffic in April to 65.87 million tonnes (mt), driven primarily by an increase in coal – both coking and thermal (imports) and finished fertiliser shipments. However, traffic across three of the busiest ports –Paradip (Odisha), Deendayal (Gujarat), and JNPT (Maharashtra) –slowed down on account of lower iron ore shipments (a key export item from India), indicating building recessionarypressures.

Cargo traffic in April 2022 was 65 mt, as per data available from the IndianPortsAssociation.

Paradip, Deendayal, and JNPA handled 45 per cent of the Country’s cargo traffic, slightly lower than the 47 per cent share they had in the comparativemonthlastyear.

Finished fertiliser shipments saw the highest increase in April, rising over 33 per cent, to 0.6 mt; as against 0.46mtintheyear-ago-period.

Thermal coal shipments, primarily imports increased by 27 per cent YoY to 12 mt-odd, versus 9.4 mt in April 2022. Coking coal – a key steel-making raw material – saw an 11-12 per cent riseto4.6mt.Cokingcoalshipmentsin Aprillastyearwas4.1mt.

Other liquid shipments saw a 6.68percentincreaseYoYto2.4mt.

Incidentally, other categories like petroleum, oil, and lubricants (POL), which includes crude, LPG/LNG and others, saw a drop of 2 per cent YoY to 19.6 mt, down from the 20 mt-odd shipmentsinApril2022.

Iron ore shipments, primarily exported to China, dropped 13 per cent-odd, the highest fall among major commodities tracked, to 4.7 mt. Shipments in the year-ago-period was 5.4mt.

Raw fertiliser shipments dropped over 9 per cent to 0.71 mt in April (from 0.8 mt in the year-ago period), while miscellaneous items shipped droppedover23percentto6.6mt.

Customs officials are holding panIndia interactions with trade to address concerns and issues related totheITsystemglitches.

The Government has been focusing on easing regulatory processes and improving trade facilitation to boost the country’s economy.

However, the current situation withthecustomsITsystemislikelyto have a negative impact on trade, as importers continue to face difficulties inclearingtheirshipments.

by 1.30% in April

Container traffic saw a 4 per cent increase with 981 TEUs (twenty equivalent units) moving, against 943 TEUsinthesamemonth,a-year-ago.

Port-wise traffic

Paradip – among the busiest ports in India – witnessed the highest traffic to the tune of 11.7 mt, but this was still 4 per cent-odd lower than April last year. The drop was primarily due to lower shipments of POL – of 6 per cent to 3.1 mt – and iron ore – down 25percentto1.8mt.

Vizag saw a 2.35 per cent drop in traffic to 6.2 mt mostly because of 16percentdropinPOLshipments.

Mormugao saw a 16.30 per cent decline in traffic with shipments across all categories, except thermal coal, declining; while in the case of Deendayal port, where traffic dropped 11 per cent in April, shipments were down in most categories except coal andfinishedfertilisers.

The Kolkata dock system saw a 5percentdropintraffic.

“Growth in cargo volumes across most of our ports reflects that our strategy of improving operational efficiency is delivering results and thiswillcontinuetoboosttheROCEof port assets” said Mr. Karan Adani, CEO and Whole Time Director, APSEZ. “I am also pleased to announce that Dhamra LNG Terminalbertheditsfirstshipandthe natural gas started flowing in the pipeline network connected to the

terminal, well in line with our guidance of achieving the LNG terminal commissioning during Q1 FY24.”

Four ports recorded significant sequential growth in monthly volumes. Sarbananda Sonowal to receive the 1st Indian Cargo Ship docking at Sittwe Port Tomorrow

NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal will be receiving the first Indian cargo ship at Sittwe Port in Myanmar on May 9, 2023. The ceremony is likely to inaugurate regular transit of cargo ships between Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata, India to Sittwe Port in Rakhine state of Myanmar, heralding a new age of transportation between the two countries. The route is likely to unlock tremendous economic potential for the entire Bay of Bengal peninsula, allowing a bridge between South Asia and South East Asia regions, informed Shri Sonowal, while addressing media personsinDibrugarh,Assam.

Speaking on the occasion Shri Sonowal said, “Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri NarendraModi, theNortheastIndiaremainsattheforefront ofIndia’sdevelopmentalagenda.Aswestandonthishistoric threshold, when the landlocked Northeast India will finally have a much shorter access to the International Sea Route, it would not have been possible without the visionary propositionof‘ActEast’byNarendraModiji.DuetoModiji’s commitmenttotheprogressandprosperityoftheNortheast region, we have been able to spearhead with speedy execution of the Sittwe port in Myanmar, with an aim to boosting the trade prospect of Northeast India in the ensuingyears.ApartfromtheNortheastIndia, thisportwill also unlock huge commercial potential for Bangladesh, Bhutan and even Nepal - apart from India and Myanmarby acting as a bridge with the South East Asia. This is the true reflection of implementation of ‘Sabka Saath, SabkaVikas’philosophyofModiji.”

Sittwe port development is part of the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP). Once operationalised, the Sittwe port will enable multi modal transit connectivitywiththeSouthEastAsia. SittwePorthasbeendevelopedunder a framework agreement between India and Myanmar for the construction and operation of a MultimodalTransitTransportFacility on Kaladan river connecting the SittweportinMyanmarwiththestateofMizoraminIndia. Shri Sonowal said, “Once fully operationalised, Kaladaan Multi Modal Transport TP will provide alternate connectivity from Eastern coast of India to the North-eastern states through the Sittwe port. This is a far more feasible route for the trade and commerce of Northeast India, than the existing route via Siliguri to Kolkata, saving time, money and excelling efficiency. Cost of transportation of goods from Kolkata to Aizwal was see drop of more than 50% in cost and time when the cargo is sent from Kolkata to Sittwe onto Palletwa and after that via road to Aizwal and the whole of Northeast India. Similarly, goods from Kolkata to Agartala will incur much lesser cost and time via this route. While the length of road from Kolkata to Agartala is around 1600 kms and takes 4 days via roadways, the Sittwe to Chittagong to Sarboom to Agartala will be done in 2 days, saving cost and time. In addition to reduction of traffic on the road, the use of marine transport will considerably bring down environmental cost of transport with drop in fossil fuel carbon emission. This is a wonderful thing which will not only help us economically but also environmentally.”

NEW DELHI: The Hon’bleUnionMinisterof Commerce & Industry, ConsumerAffairs,Food& Public Distribution and Textiles, Mr Piyush Goyal, gave away the 17th Set of Niryat Shree and Niryat Bandhu Awards to the outstanding exporters and service providers based on their excellent export performance and incremental growth in exports. Praising the exporting community, theCIMsaidthattheyhave shownexemplaryperformanceandhas not only created a niche for Indian brands as Brand Ambassadors, but has setabenchmarkforthemtogrowinthe global markets. Mr Piyush Goyal also said that the Ministry is working handin-hand with the trade and industry to achieveUS$2trillionexportsby2030.

The Minister reiterated that India should engage with quality produced goodsandservicesandalsoshowtothe world the path of growth and rising India. We must collectively put our efforts with a sense of duty and responsibility to help in making India a developed economy by 2047. He also added that times ahead are going to be very challenging and tough with Russia-Ukraine crisis further getting intensified. This is the time, we should look at trading in new markets and exploring newer ones, as these are going to be the drivers of growth. The world recognises India for its reliable and quality products.

We should all work for future, India's defining moments for inclusive, equitable, sustainable and shared growth for all as envisioned by the Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, said the Commerce and Industry Minister.

Mr Santosh Kr Sarangi, DGFT, GoI, while addressing the function said that despite global challenges, we still have been able to achieve the highestever exports of over US$ 770 billion. The DGFT added that the Hon'ble Commerce and Industry Minister has always pushed for achieving newer heights. Dr Sakthivel added that he is confident of achieving the milestone of US$ 2 trillion exports much before 2030. Dr Ajay Sahai, Director General & CEO, FIEO, while proposing the vote of thanks during the function said that India is not an export driven economy. The share of exports in the country's GDP is around 22%, yet exports are playing a transformational role in the economy. Exports were major contributors to India’s additional GDP in the previous two financial years. In 2021-22, out of overall incremental GDP in the financial year, over 50% was contributed by exports alone. In 202223, despite global headwinds, exports accounted for over 40% of the incremental GDP. The Hon’ble Prime Minister has rightly said that exports are key to the transition of the country from a developing to a developed economy, which we are endeavouring to achieve before the 100th year of our gloriousindependence.

Govt gets 9 EoIs for Intl Transhipment Port in Andaman & Nicobar

NEW DELHI: The MoPSW has received expressions of interest (EOIs) fromnineplayersfortheRs41,000crore internationaltranshipmentportproject at Great Nicobar Island in the Bay of Bengal, a Senior Government official saidrecently.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways in a statement said the project is expected to be completed with an investment of Rs 41,000 crore (USD 5 billion), including investment from both government and public-private

partnership (PPP) concessionaires. The proposed port in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands will have the ultimate capacity to handle 16 million containers per year, and in the first phase, to be commissioned by 2028 at a cost of Rs 18,000 crore, it will handle more than 4 million containers. Other projects planned around the transhipment port include an airport, township and power plant.

The project is located on the international trade route, with existing transhipment terminals like Singapore,

KlangandColomboinproximity.

The project focuses on three key drivers, which can result in making it a leading container transhipment port — strategic location in terms of proximity (40 nautical miles) with the international shipping trade route, availability of natural water depth of over 20m and carrying capacity of transhipmentcargofromalltheportsin theproximity, includingIndianports,as perthestatement.

India, Russia suspend negotiations to settle trade in Rupees : Sources

NEWDELHI:IndiaandRussiahave suspended efforts to settle bilateral trade in rupees, after months of negotiations failed to convince Moscow to keep rupees in its coffers, two Indian Government officials and a source with directknowledgeofthemattersaid.

This would be a major setback for Indian importers of cheap oil and coal from Russia who were awaiting a permanent rupee payment mechanism tohelplowercurrencyconversioncosts. With a high trade gap in favour of Russia, Moscow believes it will end up with an annual rupee surplus of over

$40 billion if such a mechanism is worked out and feels rupee accumulation is ‘not desirable’, an IndianGovernmentOfficial, whodidnot wanttobenamed, toldReuters.

The rupee is not fully convertible. India’s share of global exports of goods also is just about 2% and these factors reducethenecessityforothercountries toholdrupees.

India started exploring a rupee settlement mechanism with Russia soon the invasion of Ukraine in February last year, but there has been no reported deal done in rupees.

MARSEILLE: CEVA Logistics is connecting its global automotive customers with more roll-on, roll-off (RORO)vesselcapacitythankstoanew10-yearleasethe logistics firm has signed with its parent company, CMA CGM. The agreement for four of Eastern Pacific Shipping’s LNG dual-fuel hybrid deep-sea vessels will allow CEVA to transport approximately 140,000 vehicles annually between global markets, especially China and Europe.

The RORO ships are currently under construction by ChinaMerchantsJinlingShipyard(Weihai),withthefirst vessel expected to be delivered in December and the three subsequent ships coming in 2024. Under the lease agreement,CEVALogisticswillmanageandoperatethe vessels with full commercial control over the ROROcapacity.

At nearly 200 meters in length, the vessels will each havethecapacitytotransport7,000carsthankstonearly 59,000 square meters of effective deck surface spread across 12 levels. With a width of 38 meters, the ships will have a gross tonnage of 72,000 tons and move at a max speed of 19.5 knots. The RORO vessels’ hybrid power systems will include both LNG and electric battery capabilities.

End-to-endnetworkforfinishedvehicles

The new vessels will enable CEVA to offer its owned, controlledcapacitytoautomotivecustomersandprovide a suite of flexible shipping options and end-to-end services. CEVA will offer door-to-door solutions, able to take delivery of finished vehicles directly from manufacturing facilities and then manage transport to final destinations around the world through its network of port connections, RORO capacity, car haulers and vehicledepots.

Cars in Containers Solution for smaller volumes, moredirectaccess

CEVA is also strengthening its Cars in Containers solution to offer a more flexible option for shippers that need to transport small quantities of finished vehicles to strategicportsorin-landlocationsnoteasilyservedbyits own RORO vessels or other carrier partners. With lower shipping rates and limited RORO capacity, carmakers cantakeadvantageofthissolutionforreducedleadtimes andincreasedflexibilityintermsofshippingschedules.

CEVA has the global network and specialized capabilities to manage the container loading and unloadingoffinishedvehicles, astepthatcanoftenmake the solution too time-consuming and labor-intensive for shippers.Asoceanshippingratesareexpectedtoremain lower than in previous years, the solution offers carmakers another alternative in transporting finished vehiclesaroundtheworld.

In addition to its finished vehicle logistics solutions, CEVA supports global automotive manufacturers and many global automotive parts suppliers with other logistics solutions, including inbound to manufacturing andaftermarketservices.

Global new light vehicle sales are expected to reach

nearly 83.6 million units in 2023, a 5.6 percent increase year-over-year, according to a recent forecast by S&P Global Mobility. With global 2022 production up approximately 6.0 percent over 2021 levels, estimates place 2023 production at 85 million units for a 4 percent increasefrom2022.Productionlevelsarenotexpectedto reach pre-pandemic numbers before 2024 or 2025, according to various industry estimates. In 2022, China exported 3.1 million vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 54.4 percent, according to the China Association of AutomobileManufacturers(CAAM).

The International Energy Agency estimated that 13 percent of 2022 car sales would be electric, a number expected to reach 13.3 percent in 2023, according to S&P. With the European Fit for 55 plan, China's EV policy and the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act’s tax credit, EVs are being more widely integrated into public policy, encouragingfurthergrowthinthesegment.

SupportingexpertisefromCMACGMGroup

In operating and commercializing the new vessels, CEVA Logistics will benefit from the expertise of the CMA CGM Group’s newly formed department dedicated tospecialtymaritimeshipping, including:

• vehicletransportoncarcarriers.

• La Méridionale, a maritime shipping company operating ro-ro cargo and passenger ships (Ro-Pax), which is currently being acquired by CMA CGM (subjecttotheapprovalbyregulatoryauthorities).

• the Group’s investment in Brittany Ferries, in which CMA CGM invested €25 million in 2021 to support its recovery.

• the future capacity of Neoline, the first wind-powered ROROvessel, whichtheGroupishelpingtofinance. Emmanuel Cheremetinski, global FVL leader, CEVA Logistics, said: “As the automotive supply chain continues to stabilize from numerous shocks over the past several years, we have remained close to our customers to understand their challenges and growth opportunities. The decision to operate four deep-sea ROROs is a clear example of our promise of responsive logistics. With such a large need for additional capacity, we found a solution that allows us to co-create long-term value with our customers in the global economy by improving the go-to-market conditions for their finished vehicles.”
