Machilipatnam Port construction works commence this month

HYDERABAD: The Bandar port, with over 2,000 years historical significance in terms of imports and exports, is going to get revived very soon. With the decision of the State government to commence port construction works, the Machilipatnam area is going to get back its glory as well as the people’s long-cherished dream also will be fulfilled.

According to higher authorities, Machilipatnam Port construction works would commence in this month. Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy will formally lay foundation stone to start port works onMay22inMachilipatnam.

It may be noted that all kinds of obstacles including finances that impeded the port construction for yearswerecleared.Theportobtained Environmental Clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests andgotaloanofRs3,940croreforport construction from Power Finance CorporationLimited.

Airport, Seaport, Railway companies can now bid for road building

NEW DELHI: Airport, seaport, railway and metro rail builders can now join in the task of building highways under a new Government order aimed at giving a thrust to limping road construction. In a key reform, the governmenthasputcoreinfrastructure development firms on its list of companies that are eligible to build capital-intensivehighways.

So far, only specialist and experienced road builders have been allowed to participate in such bids. The government hopes opening up the sector will bring in more competition, lowercostsandspeedupconstruction. Companies with experience in building airports—which include air strips—ports, railways and metro rail projects will be able to bid for constructing highways and expressways.

The move comes as the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and other road building agencies have lagged their highway-building targets for two years in a row. NHAI is also sitting on a debt of around Rs. 3 trillion. Analysts said as more road projects come up for bids, expanding the field also addresses the problem of contractors being unwilling to take up toomanyprojectsatonetime.
