New Shipping service links Dammam Port with India & Iraq

RIYADH : A new shipping service has been added to Dammam’s King Abdulaziz Port linking it with India and Iraq, the Saudi Ports Authority said recently.

The India-Saudi-Iraq service was added by the Bengal Tiger Line, a Singapore-based company, it added The additionaffirmstheauthority’sgoalto“improvethemaritime navigation network’s connectivity index with international shipping services and shipping lines.”

The ISI connects the King Abdulaziz Port with the Indian port Mundra and the Iraqi port Umm Qasr, with a carryingcapacityof929standardcontainers.

In January, the ports authority approved five new shipping services linking the Kingdom with as many as 43internationalports.

The five new services are projected to support commercial traffic, strengthen the national imports and exports system, as well as provide alternatives for importers,exporters,andshippingagents.

In addition, the new services will enable the authority to back the logistics system and upgrade the services of importers, exporters, and shippingagents.

The five new services are dispersed across three Saudi ports — Jeddah Islamic Port, King Abdulaziz Port inDammam,andJubailCommercialPort.

RCL reports record prot for 2022

THAILAND : Regional Container Lines (RCL) credits strict cost control and the sale of five vessels for a record profit in 2022 despite freight rates falling to “normalpre-covid”levelsbythefourthquarter.

Thai-listed RCL reported a net profit of THB 24.6bn in 2022 up 37% over the previous year. Revenues were alsoup37%year-on-yearatTHB53.2bnin2022.

The line noted that for the year as a whole freight rates were up 24%, however, volumes grew by just 1.4%. Although the year average freight was up, rates had fallen from their highs in the second quarter of last year to“normalpre-covid”levelsbythefourthquarter.

The container shipping market was also impacted by high bunker prices, inflation, high-interest rates, a looming recession and disruption in supply chains, as

wellasgeopoliticalconflicts.

Nevertheless,theCompanyhasbeenabletomaintain the profits with strict cost control practices as well as improved the fleet profile effectively by selling the five retired vessels in 2022, in which THB900 million has been includedasanextragain,”RCLsaid.

Looking ahead the company commented: “As the container shipping industry’s performance mainly depends on freight rate and total lifting, the company continues to carefully monitor and manage its business strategies to be in line with the downtrend in freight rate as well as continues to put efforts to manage its services networkalongwithfleetoptimisation.”

RCL owns a fleet of 42 container vessels with a totalcapacityof87,450TEU.

Maersk advances warehouse fulfillment speed with new software and scanning technology

COPENHAGEN : Maersk continues to implement technology solutions that improve warehouse fulfillment operations and speed to customer. A new technology is achieving warehouse productivity gains from more picks per hour, enabling more ecommerce orders shipped on deadline. Demurrage and detention charges are an important tool for supply chain stakeholders to ensure the efficient use of their container stock which represents a substantial investment. Understanding the need for maintaining the velocity of cargo, containers need to be turned around as fast as possible Consequently, merchants who use containers for longer periods should be discouraged from this practice. Best practices on this topic can be found in FIATA’s Toolkit on Detention and Demurrage and the Best Practice Guide on Container Shipping and Quality of ContainersVol2.

FIATA notes that it is the obligation of shipping lines to provide a reasonable free period to allow the merchant sufficienttimefor:

• the loading and delivery of the container for an export; and

• the pick-up, unloading and return of the empty containerforanimport.

During the last few years, free time periods for containers have been reduced and tariffs for demurrage and detention have increased considerably Shipping lines justified shorter free time periods noting that it will increase fluidity and help to ease congestion. The decision forced merchants to make considerable efforts to meet free time windows, leading to landside congestion, and above all, traffic jams around major ports and terminals. However, merchants have been charged detention and demurrage fees even in situations where they had no control over the container turnaround time, despite their bestefforts,duetocongestionatports.

With reduced volumes shipped, the strain on supply

chain bottlenecks came down, and congestion has since eased substantially The idle capacity of containers that were stuck in congestion are now also coming back into circulation. Industry feedback notes that the combination of older equipment having been kept in service, and production of new containers at record levels, would lead to a period where the available container fleet outweighs demandforitsuse.

Need for timely response to changed market environment

A supply chain is stronger when there is dialogue and coordination between stakeholders. No one stakeholder shouldimposeonerousrequirementsontheothers.Inthis context, the current free time periods limit the scope for propercompliancewiththe:

• ConventionforSafeContainer(CSC);

• Code of Practice for Packing of Cargo Transport Units asapprovedbyIMO/ILO/UNECE

In addition, FIATA (and co-sponsors) encourages shipping lines to take a serious look into the quality of the equipmentto:

• retire equipment that is beyond its natural economical lifecircleandmaynotbe“fitforpurpose”;and

• use the period to pro-actively review equipment, to maintain and repair it and ensure that it complies with appropriatestandardsforcontainerquality.

FIATA calls for detention and demurrage practices to be in line with the velocity principle, with multistakeholder coordination to respond to market needs in a timely manner to strengthen supply chain resilience. Now is the time to act to optimise container movements and improvecontainerqualityforfutureuse.

MMLP at Indore awarded, to be developed in an area of 255.17 acre near Pithampur in Madhya Pradesh

NEW DELHI - Indore is known as the Commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh due to rich ecosystem, fertile soil and high-quality workforce. MMLP at Indore is being developed in an area of 255.17 acre near Pithampur in Dhar district in Madhya Pradesh. The site is strategically located, near to Pithampur industrial area, Apparel and Pharma cluster and abutting the Indore Tihi- Dahod rail line as well as proposed Mhow ring road, at 30 kms from Indore Airport and Indore city The estimated total project cost is Rs 1110.58 Crore. The Project is proposed to be developed in PPP (DBFOT) mode wherein a Developer will be appointed with a Concession Period of 45 years for developing and operating the MMLP with an estimated cost of Rs 758.10 Crore. The Project has been awarded to M/SGRInfraprojects Limited.

A Government SPV is being formed amongst National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHI-ML), Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) and Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation (MPIDC). SPV will provide land for the MMLP , external rail, road connectivity as well as Water and Power supply etc. The MMLP is being provided with 4 lane access from Mhow - Neemach four lane state highway and rail siding of length -6.5 Km from SagoreRailwaystation.

The MMLP will be developed in three phases and target completion of Phase-I is 2 years i.e., by 2025 leading

to commercial operations. MMLP will cater to -12.79 million Metric Tonne (MMT) cargo in the horizon period of 45 years and will give huge boost to the industrial zones in the catchment region such as Indore, Ujjain, Dewas, Dhar, Pithampur, Khandwa and Barwani. It will create lot of employment opportunities and bring in economic development intheregion.

As an outcome of Logistics Efficiency Enhancement Programme study (LEEP), MoRTH in partnership with other line Ministries and State Governments is developing Multi Modal Logistics Parks at 35 strategic locations across the country under the Bharatmala Pariyojana. MMLP is a key solution theme for lowering the logistics cost as percentage of GDP at par with developed countries.

Negotiations regarding long-term contract with Chabahar Port in full swing : Sarbananda Sonowal

NEW DELHI : Union Minister ofPorts, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal said that India and Iran are negotiating terms of the main contract on longterm usage of Chabahar Port and would look at finalising thesame“asquicklyaspossible”.

Chabahar is India’s first overseas port project and the long-term agreement, valid for a period of 10 years and to be extended automatically, is meant to replace an initial pact which covers India’s operations at the Shahid Beheshti terminal in Chabahar port. The initial pact is renewedonanannualbasis.

“We are working on the long-term contract and it will be signed soon,” Sonowal told, but did not mention a timeline within which the contract would be firmed up. “There is no timeline as such for signing the contract. But, we are on the same page on most of the issues. We are in discussions with the Iranian Government,” headded.

Officials in the know said, the long-term contract had previously figured in discussions that took place during Sonowal’s visittoIraninAugustlastyear.

Jurisdiction forarbitration ofdifferences

The issue holding up the long-term agreement relates “only” to jurisdiction for arbitration of differences. Under Iran’s Constitution, such arbitration cannot be referred to foreign courts, and a proposal under the agreement would require a constitutional amendment. Iran reportedly is in favourofremovaloftheInternational Arbitration Clause.

India took up the development of the Shahid Beheshti Terminal under a tripartite agreement on Chabahar signed with Iran and Afghanistan in May 2016. Afghanistan

is effectively no longer part of the arrangements since the takeover of the country by the Taliban last year. India had pledged it would invest $85 million in the terminal and has so far supplied cranes and other equipments worth a few millions.

India continues to equip and operate the container and multi-purpose terminals at Chabahar Port as per the existing arrangements and had recently handed over six mobile harbour cranes to Indian Ports Global Chabahar FreeTradeZone(IPGCFTZ) attheport.

“Also discussed was the need for increased investments. for hinterland development in context of trade corridor through Chabahar from the Iranian authority ,”aministryofficial said.

Budgetallocation

The Union Budget has earmarked100 crore for Chabahar port for FY24. Over the last two years, FY22 and FY23,theoutlayhasbeen100crore,eachyear.

Located in the Sistan-Baluchistan province on Iran’s south eastern coast (outside the Persian Gulf), Chabahar portgivesIndiaseaandlandaccess toAfghanistan andthe Central Asian region, bypassing Pakistan. The port is also being built as a gateway to the east and west of the Caspian sea as part of the International North South Transport Corridor.

Earlier in September, the first inter-modal digital International Road Transports (TIR)-based pilot transport between India and Iran through the INSTC corridor was flagged off from Jawaharlal Nehru Port. This facilitates seamless and paperless cross-border transit of goods,underthecustomsguarantee oftheTIRsystem.

World Container Index down by 3% last week

LONDON -Drewry’scomposite WorldContainer Index decreased by3%to$1,897.88 per40ftcontainer lastweek.

Drewry’s detailed assessment for Thursday, 23February2023

The composite index has decreased by 3% this week, and has dropped by 80% when compared with the same week last year. The latest Drewry WCI composite index of $1,898 per 40-foot container is now 82% below the peak of $10,377 reached in September 2021. It is 30% lower than the 10-year average of $2,692, indicating a return to more normal prices, but remains 34% higher than average 2019 (pre-pandemic) ratesof$1,420.

The average composite index for the year-to-date is $2,035 per 40ft container, which is $657 lower than the 10-yearaverage($2,692 mentioned above).

The composite index remained decreased by 3% to $1,897.88 per 40ftcontainer,andis80% lower than the same week in 2022. Freight rates on all trades decreased marginally this week. On Shanghai – New York and Shanghai – Rotterdam, rates fell by 4% to $2,881 and $1,633 per feu, respectively. Rates on Shanghai – Los Angeles and Los Angeles – Shanghai slid by 3% to settle at $1,959 and $1,101 per 40ft box, respectively. Similarly, rates on Rotterdam – Shanghai and New York – Rotterdam also contracted by 3% to $728 and $1,161 per feu, respectively. Moreover, those on Shanghai – Genoa fell by 2% to $2,540 per 40ft box and on Rotterdam – New York dipped a miniscule 1% to $5,640 per feu. Drewry expects small week-on-week reductions in rates in the next few weeks.

India to become 3rd largest economy in the next five years : Piyush Goyal

PUNE : India would become the third largest economy in the world in the next five years and by 2047 could be at the level the United States of America is at present, Union Minister ShriPiyushGoyal saidrecently.

He also called the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership trade deal as a “disaster in the making” and it “was music to my ears” when Prime Minister Shri Narendra ModisaidtheCountrywouldnotbejoiningit.

The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry was speaking at the Asia Economic Dialogue 2023 event in Pune.

“I think in the next four to five years, India will be the third largest economy in the world (from fifth position at present).By2047,wewillbeatthelevelthattheUnitedStates ofAmericaistoday.The1.4billionpeopleofIndiaaregoingto makeoureconomyaUSD30-40trillionone,”hesaid.

On India not joining the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership trade deal, Mr Goyal said, “It was disaster in the making as we were entering a free trade agreement without a court of appeal, no democracy or rule of law. Except a handful of people, I don’t remember anyonesayingweshouldjoinRCEP,”hesaid.

India was the outlier in the RCEP mechanism as, of the 15 nations in it, India had free trade agreements with 10 ASEAN nations as well as Japan and Korea, and also dueto“geopolitical tensions withChina”,headded.

In November, 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that India would not join the RCEP trade deal.

Speaking at the RCEP Summit in Thailand, the PM had said negotiations had failed to address India’s outstanding issuesandconcerns.

The RCEP was to comprise 10 ASEAN nations and six of its free trade agreement partners, namely India,

China, Japan, SouthKorea,Australia andNewZealand.

India opted out, with one of the fears being the flooding of its markets with cheap Chinese agricultural and industrialproducts.

Speaking on trade with China, Mr Goyal said the mechanism envisaged at the time would have severely impacted manufacturinginIndia.

“My own experience is China blocks the door for imports from India, while we here have become weaker and started enjoying low cost, low quality goods (from there). Its somewhere like opium,” he said.

“Between 2004-2014, out trade deficit with China rose from USD 500 million to USD 48 billion. We allowed everything to come in from China while they stopped products from India. Therefore, it was music to my ears when PM Modi said we would not jointheRCEPtradedeal,”heasserted.

Every segment of society, the industrial and agricultural sectors, welcomed the PM’s decision on RECP, Mr Goyal said.

National Logistics Policy will bring ease of logistics, says Teamlease Regtech

“This industry is the backbone of the country’s manufacturing,” he said.

It enables the seamless movement of goods across the country and helps industries meet their demand and supply requirements.

Many industries, such as automotive, retail, and ecommerce, are heavily dependent on the logistics sector. Therefore, the National Logistics Policy’s positive impact will have a ripple effect on various industries and further strengthen India’s economic growth.

Agrawal believes that if the compliance burden on the logistics sector reduces, the contribution of the logistics sector to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) will positively increase. This increase will be a result of reduced operational costs and better efficiencies, making the logistics sector more competitive globally.

MOL establishes 'MOL Group DX Vision' to transform Business Operations through Digital Technology

CEVA Logistics commits to all low-carbon electricity, reduced carbon footprint for Contract Logistics, freight warehouse operations by 2025

Transioning all contract logiscs and freight warehouses to low-carbon electricity by 2025.

is transitioning all its contract logistics and freight warehouses to low-carbon electricity by 2025. The commitment will rely on a combination of purchasing low-carbon electricity (renewable and nuclear) from local utility providers and increasing its own production of electricity using rooftop solar panels, which the company will triple by the end of 2025. In addition, CEVA expects to reach 100 percent LED lighting in its warehousing facilities by the end of 2023.

Efciency, emissions gains through lighting, equipment

CEVA Logistics finished 2022 with LED lighting in approximately 80 percent of its contract logistics warehouses. The company expects to reach 100 percent bytheendof2023aspartofitsmulti-million-dollarenergy efficiency investments In addition to the lighting initiative, the company is implementing a range of heating and cooling projects to reduce its energy consumption.

CEVA is also increasing the size of its lithium-ion material handling equipment (MHE) fleet. The global logistics provider expects its global fleet to reach a 40 percent level in 2023 of eco-MHE (lithium-ion and gel battery units). Beyond the obvious emissions savings in move away from diesel- or LPG-powered combustion MHE, the company is also seeing an average 16 percent emissions reduction during the charging process when switching from a lead-acid battery MHE to more ecofriendlylithium-ionbatteries.

Commitmenttoenergytransitioninlogistics

Through a joint investment with real estate partners of approximately $180 million, CEVA plans to triple the

surface area of solar panels covering the roofs of its contract logistics warehouses around the world. By the end of 2025, the company expects to have approximately 1.8 million square meters of solar panels installed at its facilities - an area 2.25 times the size of France’s famed Palace of Versailles. With this coverage area, the company estimates it will generate approximately 135,000MWHperyear

CEVA leverages the strength of its global network by applying lessons learned between operations in different countries and continents. In the U.K., CEVA is already operating on 100 percent low-carbon electricity, and operationsinBeneluxproducemoreelectricitythanthey consume. As newer markets expand, renewable and lowcarbon electricity will play a critical role in supporting those operations CEVA opened a new zero-emission warehouseinBogota,Colombia,in2022.
