FAIR DAYS 1960-1969

County fair opens Wednesday at Manti Aug. 7, 1964 — In a meeting of the Fair Board held recently at the court house in Manti, final preparations were made for the Sanpete County Fair to be held August 12 through 15, and several appointments were made to key positions. Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Nielson had accepted the position of chairman of the exhibition building, it was reported, and Mrs. Sybil Bessey announced that the Sanpete County Queen Contest was well underway. Director Holm of Snow College has been asked to award a scholarship to the winner of the contest. The director agreed to do this, provided the winner has maintained a “B” average and can offer some talent to the school. It was decided to hold a tea for contestants, their parents and the judges. A report was given by Bruce Allred which showed that the afternoon race meet and entertainment was coming along very good. He said there would be two new faces added to the program this year, a cold race and a “small” horse race. The races on Friday will begin at 2 p.m. and they will get underway on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Mr. Allred announced the list of committeemen working with him and representing the riding clubs in the county are as follows: Jack Howard, Manti; Eddie Bench, Fairview; Steve Hone, Gunnison and Ted Peterson, Ephraim. The new extension agent for Sanpete, Del Purnell, was introduced by Dennis Funk. Mr. Purnell will be replacing Mr. Funk in the near future. Mr. Funk also announced the judges for this year’s fair as follows: Professor Milt Madsen of USU, sheep; Jim Peterson, Panguitch, horses; Carl Hatch, USU Extension Service, Kanab, swine and beef; Merrill Warnick, Pleasant Grove, dairy; and Robert Hassell, USU Extension Service,

Provo, vegetables, fruits and 4-H. Bids for the concession stand were opened with Mt. Pleasant Second Ward having low bid of $126.00. Ned Madsen, who is fair board chairman, said the fair will open August 11 when the doors swing open to receive exhibits, and will close August 15 with the concluding performance of a professional rodeo. Glen Allred, Manti, is fair board secretary. Serving on the fair board with Mr. Madsen and Mr. Allred are Stanley Voorhees of Manti; Keith S. Hansen, Fairview; Golden Carlston, Fairview; Clifford S. Blackham, Moroni; Ernest Brunger, Mt. Pleasant; Morris Bunnell, Spring City; Mel Ramsey, Moroni; Andrew Judd, Manti; Lawrence Nielsen, Ephraim; Dean Malmgren, Centerfield; Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson, Mayfield; Eugene Overfelt, Gunnison and Mont Nelson of Fountain Green. Special assignments as chairmen of fair activities have been made as follows: Douglas Peterson, Gunnison, parade; Kendall Keller, Manti, livestock buildings; Clair Tuttle, Mt. Pleasant, rodeo; Blaine Larsen, Mt. Pleasant, announcer; Bruce Allred, Mt. Pleasant, riding club activities; Golden Sanderson, Fairview, special entertainment events; Clair Erickson, Ephraim, premium book; and R. Lynn Nielson, Manti, exhibition building. Highlights of the fair include the Miss Sanpete County Fair Contest August 14, horse races the afternoons of August 14 and 15, performances by the Young and Young Rodeo the nights of August 14 and 15 and the parade down Manti’s Main Street August 15 at 5 p.m.
