Looking back over the last century of fairs

By Christi C. Babbitt Fair Book Editor For more than 100 years, Sanpete County residents have joined together each fall for a fair.

In 1914, the Sanpete County Commissioners appropriated $250 for the Sanpete County Fair Association to conduct the first Sanpete County Fair. The fair has since grown over the years to including a rodeo, a demolition derby, a wide variety of entertainment opportunities and a grand parade.

Without a doubt, many county residents were disappointed when the decision was made to cancel this year’s fair due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Sanpete County Fair Board issued the following statement in early July: “The Sanpete County Fair Board and Sanpete County Commissioners have taken into consideration every aspect of how to economically and safely conduct the 2020 Sanpete County Fair amidst COVID-19. We have been watching updates from our local health department and see the cases growing in the Sanpete Valleys.

“It is our desire to not contribute to the growing pandemic. It’s hard to maintain social distance and keep everyone safe at a lot of our events.

“This being said, and with the greatest respect for everyone’s health and safety, we regret to inform you that all Sanpete County Fair events are cancelled for 2020, this includes the Sanpete Xtreme Moto in July.

“We wish you all a healthy, safe and happy summer and look forward to our next fair in 2021. The Sanpete County Jr. Livestock Committee will still be conducting the Jr. Livestock Show and Auction.”

A look at past issues of The Pyramid newspaper revealed that this is not the first time the Sanpete County Fair has been canceled. In 1948, the county commission decided to cancel the fair due to lack of funding.

According to newspaper reports, however, the fair was back up and running in 1949, and, in fact, an editorial that ran in The Pyramid on Aug. 5, 1949, stated the fair that year was anticipated to be a “program unequaled in history.”

Stories about the fair that ran in the newspaper over the years frequently declared that the fair planned that particular year was anticipated to be the “greatest fair 6

every held in Sanpete County.”

In an effort to remember the rich heritage of past Sanpete County Fairs and look forward to more fairs in the future even as the COVID-19 pandemic has caused nearly all large events to be canceled, this year’s fair book features a selection of articles and photos that reflect the activities and growth of the fair during the past century.

All of the articles included in this magazine were taken either from past copies of The Pyramid newspaper or past Sanpete County Fair Books published by The Pyramid. The date at the beginning of each story indicates the date it was published.

FAIR DAYS 1914-1919

County Fair To Be Held At Manti Aug. 28, 1914 — For the first time in its history this country is to have a fair and tournament. Enough work has been done to insure its success and the whole county will get together for one great big time.

The dates are Sept. 28th to Oct. 1st inclusive, at Manti.

The livestock exhibit will be on the Fair grounds while the indoor exhibits will perhaps be arranged for in a large building up town. There will be a wonderful display in all departments, in fact a surprise is in store for the people of this county when they see the quality and variety of products of the land and the handiwork of its artisans.

Arrangements for cow testing will be made so that dairy cows will be tested free for all who enter the same.

A good half mile track is being put in shape for horses from this and other counties will be in training until the time set.

Base ball will be an important part of the tournament, prizes being offered to the winning teams. Our local team is at work here and other teams in the county are already playing good ball.

Concessions are being arranged for by a number of parties.

Fifteen hundred dollars will be distributed in prizes.

County Commissioners Meet In Regular Session Sept. 11, 1914 — At the regular meeting of the board of County Commissioners held yesterday … An appropriation of $250.00 was made to the Sanpete County Fair Association, to assist in making the County Fair a success to be held at Manti September 28th to Oct. 1st inclusive.

There are fourteen different committees at work, each on their special line so every department will be represented to the best strength.

Beginning the evening of September 28th and the following three days and nights there will be something doing every minute; there will be theaters, dancing and all that goes to make it pleasant and enjoyable when fair events are not in progress.

Parties having livestock, agricultural products, poultry, fish, art work, needle work, manufactured articles, inventive devices, or any other thing that will be of benefit as an exhibit will be kind enough to write S. Peter Peterson, Secretary of the Sanpete County Fair Association, Manti and they will receive a circular containing a list of the premiums and program together with the names of the proper committee chairman to notify of their entry and get particular information from.

John K. Madsen wins prizes at county fair Oct. 9, 1914 — John K. Madsen of this city won several prizes at the Countw Fairs held at Richfield and Manti of this year. Mr. Madsen had his Yearling Ramboullet Rams on exhibition at both places and carried away all the prizes awarded in this class. He received the 1st, 2nd and 3rd and also the sweepstake prizes at each Fair.

Mr. Madsen is well pleased with the way the fairs were conducted this season and is of the opinion that more interest will be taken in county Fairs in the future.

Hundreds of people from the various towns in the county are going to see the richest products of Sanpete’s farms and orchards.

Every department is put in readiness for the opening crowds. This include the departments of horses, cattle, sheep, and swine, poultry, agricultural and dairy products, horticulture, manufactured products, fine arts, education and women’s woks.

Every amusement program will be given each day of the fair, Rain or Shine.

Manti Is Making Great Preparations For County Fair Sept. 5, 1919 — Manti is preparing to stage one of the biggest County Fairs ever exhibited in Sanpete county.

The Fair association has purchased a large tract of land North and adjoining the fair grounds which gives them ample room to put on any kind of show they may desire.

The race track is being built according to regulation. It is almost a perfect grade all the way around and is a halfmile in circumference. J.W. Fox, former county surveyor, is directing the construction work.

A grand stand is being erected on the west side that will accommodate one thousand people or more. The old stand has also been taken around to the west side, which makes a splendid seating place.

The association is endeavoring to bring more exhibits to the county seat this year than they have been able to collect in any previous year.

In connection with the Fair which begins September 22 it is planned to have a home coming for all Sanpete Soldiers, from one end of the county to the other.

People all over the county are beginning to talk about the County Fair.

FAIR DAYS 1914-1919

County Fair Successful Some of the Finest Animals in the World Exhibited Sept. 24, 1915 — People of Sanpete County may well be proud of the County Fair which they held at Manti on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. According to the Fair board there were 2,500 people on the grounds the first day while on Tuesday, the second day, there were 3,500 people. 1,500 people visited the horticultural building on the second day where they saw more than 2,000 individual exhibits. At the fair grounds, there were about 100 head of cattle, 35 head of horses, 30 head of sheep, 20 head of hogs and 30 individual exhibits in the poultry building. Thirty-eight race horses were on the track and a great amount of excitement was enjoyed. The Military band of Mount Pleasant, the Fountain Green band, the Ladies’ Mountain Echo band of Ephraim, the Manti band and some other bands made music for everybody. It was a great week for the county.

There were some of the very finest animals in the world at this exhibition. Hon. John H. Seely was there with some of his very fine cattle and sheep and they can’t be

beat. He carried off a long list of prizes. One of his bulls was awarded three prizes, the sweepstakes and two first prizes. John K. Madsen had a fine lot of rams which took several prizes. Emil Hasler received several prizes for his horses. Mrs. B.R. Johnson received prizes for her paintings, china and landscape, and her sister got prizes for needle work. John H. Stansfield was awarded prizes on his paintings and many other Mount Pleasant people were recognized in their exhibits. We have not learned at this date just how many.

R.P. Larsen of Petersburg, a place west of Moroni, was there with nine violins made by himself from the native wood grown in the valley. Mr. Larsen has achieved a wonderful success. His violins were rich in tone and beautiful.

The wood used in the construction of the instruments is mahogany, white pine and maple.

Tuesday was Mount Pleasant day and a great many of the people of this city went down in automobiles, buggies and by rail. The schools closed at noon and nearly all of the teachers were visitors at the fair.

The fair was one of merit and the Fair Association is to be commended for the results of their efforts and the good which they accomplished.

$1,500 in Premiums and Prizes to be Given at Sanpete County Fair

Sept. 28 to Oct. 1, 1914, at Manti Sept. 25, 1914 — All citizens of the county and others interested are invited to bring in exhibits in live stock, agriculture, and all the various lines of art, and other exhibits that tend to advance the interests of this section.

All livestock entries should be arranged for not later than Sept. 25th, and all other entries should be in the hands of the proper committee not later than noon Sept. 28th.

Bring the children and all your friends, and leave dull care and work alone for three days.

FAIR DAYS 1920-1929

Many Attractions Are Planned For The County Fair Aug. 20, 1926 — Many prominent state and church authorities have accepted the invitation to attend the Sanpete County Fair and State Black Hawk Reunion to be held at Manti, September 1-2-3-4. Among those who will be present to greet the vast crowds are Governor George H. Dern, Senator Reed Smoot, and Congressman Don B. Colton. These men will address the crowds on subjects that are of interest to everyone. Several other dignitaries are expected to be in attendance whose presence will ring cheer to the Indian War Veterans and their friends.

Each city in the country is preparing special parts of the program to be given and these entertainments will be very interesting and educational.

Prospects for the exhibits at the Fair are very promising.

Several carloads of dairy cattle will be shown and competition in this department is very keen.

Requests have come from the county sheepmen for nearly one hundred pens. The sheep show will be double the size it has been in previous years.

The agricultural display is well under way and a unique and pleasing exhibit is expected.

The domestic art and science departments have applied for additional space in the exposition building because of the interest shown in the different parts of the county. The lady representatives throughout the county are working hard with women clubs and with individual displays until this department is becoming one of the biggest at the Fair.

The $1.00 season ticket campaign in the county is going over in good shape and apparently is very popular with the people.

The race program is one of the best the county ever had, which is shown by the entry of more than thirty county horses. The special foot races, team pulling matches, mounted wrestling matches, mounted tug of war, bucking contest, of interest will greatly please the

big crowds.

Ample camp grounds have been provided where light, shade, good water and other campers conveniences are sufficient to care for the needs of thousands of visitors.

County Fair Premium List Is Out Aug. 13, 1926 — The Premium list for the Sanpete County Fair is now off the Press and has been distributed throughout the county.

In many respects it is by far the best, or at least the most interesting premium list that the County has ever put out. It is different than anything that has gone before.

The Fair will likewise be different. It will be more educational and the recreational features will likewise surpass any past performance of the kind.

This statement is made advisedly because the sports program will all be furnished by County talent, and where there is local participation the human element enters to a greater extent and as such heightens interest from the spectators’ standpoint.

Six Horse Races each day; automobile novelty races; chariot races; four man relay foot races; 100 yard dash; team pulling match; mounted tug o war; bicycle races; special bucking contest; horse polo game; band parade; evening performance; dance every night on the big new open-air dance floor on the Fair Grounds.

The exhibits in Cattle, sheep, hogs, poultry, crops, women work, boys and girls club work, etc., promise to be bigger and better than ever before. The premiums throughout have been increased considerably due to the many special prizes given by patriotic citizens of the county.

Every day will be the big day this year. There is no special day designated for any certain portion of the County. The Fair will e so different, so interesting, and so full of worthwhile features that the people of the entire county will be sure to attend the entire three day period. The season tickets are so reasonable no one can afford to do otherwise.

FAIR DAYS 1920-1929

Better Exhibits Are Planned At The Fair Aug. 27, 1926 — Sanpete’s greatest County Fair is only five days away. With beautiful ideal fall weather with the complete assurance that every department will be filled to overflowing with choice products, with an entertaining program superior in quality, quantity and variety to anything attempted before and with the assurance of the greatest crowds in attendance as indicated by the advance sale of tickets and the interest manifest both within and without the county of those seeking information, it appears that the County Fair and Blackhawk encampment will register the greatest industrial and social triumph and will bring together the largest crowds every attended in one place in Sanpete County.

For several weeks the county Fair and State Blackhawk encampment which opens to the public in Manti next Wednesday, September 1st. and holds forth for four days has been the absorbing topic in local centers and has gradually widened until it has spread sufficiently to cover a good big part of the state. There appears to be a tremendous interest in the coming event as is manifest in inquiries coming from the south, east, west and north part of the state.

Not only members who are anxious to attend but exhibitors and entertainers are keen for the event and the opportunity to show their particular products. Every department gives promise of being crowded. In the live stock department the fair management has been compelled to build additional show pens.

Sanpete County Fair Board Holds Monthly Meeting April 16, 1926 — The regular monthly meeting of the Sanpete County Fair Board was held at the office of Manager W. D. Bently, last Saturday. Board members were in attendance from Axtell on the South to Fairview on the north. Not all communities were represented, however. Much routine business was transacted and some correspondence read.

Sanpete County Fair is and will be an educational institution in every sense of the word this year. The people of the county are going to see the fair this year ion greater numbers than they have ever done in past years. To this end a new feature was voted upon in the recent board meeting.

The “Boy Scouts” and “Bee Hive Girls” of the county are going to be permitted to sell season tickets for the fair this year. Every boy and girl who sells three dollars worth of tickets will be given a free pass for the three days. Adult season tickets will cost $1.00 each, children’s 50 cents each. A family season ticket can be had for $5.00 no matter how large the family.

Some new features of the fair this year are, purely a county fair; using only county talent and products throughout; no gambling concessions of any kind on the grounds; Chariot races, novelty car races, community float parade, agricultural and political speakers of renown through amplifiers, larger cash premiums throughout for all products exhibited, many improvements on the fair grounds and buildings will be some of the attractions this year.

What Sanpete Makes, Makes Sanpete, and it will be seen at the County Fair this fall by at least one-third of the population of the county, the largest number that has ever witnessed a county fair here. “It is going to be something different.”

North Sanpete Schools Win Many Prizes At County Fair Sept. 15, 1922 — The schools of North Sanpete had an exhibit of last year’s school work at the County Fair in Many this week, and succeeded in walking off with $20.00 out of the $25.00 given in prizes.

In addition to this, the Mt. Pleasant school secured the grand prize for being the school which secured the greatest number of prizes. Mt. Pleasant public school children secured 35 prizes.

FAIR DAYS 1930-1939

Better Crops Insure Success for County Fair Aug. 7, 1936 — Plans and preparations are being made by the County Fair Association for one of the best fairs in the history of Sanpete County. The spirit of the exhibition seems to be in keeping with the bounteous crops now being grown in Sanpete valley.

EXHIBITIONS The exhibit building, livestock barns and other spacer are under the process of repair. Exhibit space is being called for every day. It appears that every available inch of space will be in use.

RACES The race track is in the stages of perfection. It is expected that over seventy race horses, including the fastest stock of the western states, as well as the best that Sanpete produces will be on the fair grounds to participate in

the county’s biggest race meet of history.

PULLING CONTESTS Pulling teams of all classes are already being listed. This sport will be a real Hot Spot on the Fair Program.

ENTERTAINMENT A huge carnival has been arranged for, which will include Merry Go Round, Ferris Wheel, Whip, and several other ride novelties as well as twenty other carnival concessions. Extreme care has been exercised int eh selection of this feature, so as to give Sanpete County the “Tops” in carnival entertainment.

The Fair Committee is building a very unusual and unique program for the added entertainment of the race enthusiasts. Numbers of this program will be interspersed with the races in such a way that no waiting or delays need to bother the spectators. One of the very special numbers showing each day is an exhibition of trick and fancy horse-shoe pitching, by Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Jackson of Blue Mound, Kansas. This couple claim the Western States Pitching Championship, and are the world’s best exhibition pitchers. In addition to showing some consistent match throwing, they feature such stunts as: Ringing legs of chair on which another is sitting, knocking a bag from another’s head with shoe and making a ringer; lighting a match placed on a stake; ringing stakes hidden by blanket, ringing stake on which another is seated; pitching ringers through loops formed by another’s arms; and other seemingly impossible stunts.

The Fair Committee wishes to take this opportunity of thanking all throughout the county, who are so ably assisting them in making this the OUTSTANDING FAIR OF SANPETE COUNTY’S HISTORY.

Sanpete County Fair Board Is Selected April 2, 1937 — At a meeting of the Sanpete County Fair Board on March 27, the following were appointed for 1937: Charles S. Shane, Manager; Ellis Maylett, secretary; board members: Lyman Seely, Fountain Green; Elmo Irons, Moroni; Ben Lamb, Wales; C.V. Howell, Fairview; Justus O. Seely, Mt. Pleasant; Rudolph Hope, Spring City; O.C. Doke, Ephraim; Charles Rasmussen, Gunnison; Chris A. Peterson, Centerfield; Lloyd Christiansen, Mayfield and A.G. Kilburn, Manti.

Much Interest Being Taken In The County Fair July 17, 1936 — Enthusiastic response from all parts of the County indicate a successful fair for this year. Officials have solicited advertising for the Premium book during the past week and the support has been very gratifying.

This year’s book will be the largest ever put out by the association and will be to press within the next week.

If enthusiasm and energy will do it, the present Commissioners and Fair Officials will present the best fair in the history of the County in the opinion of Manager C.S. Shand.

The dates have been set for September 3, 4, 5, and an interesting and varied program is being prepared. A large racing program, a mammoth rodeo, baseball, pulling contests and numerous spectacular carnival stunts are being arranged. Negotiations are underway for the best bucking horses in the west. It is also planned to have Brahma cattle and longhorns for bulldogging.

Horse pulling contests promise to be an attraction of major importance with the County’s best on the grounds for competition. The State College Dynomometer will be on the grounds for the last two days of the fair.

Prizes and ribbons for exhibits are being arranged for every department. Housewives should look forward to the fair and during the canning season should especially prepare fruits and vegetables for exhibition. Prizes in these departments are luring.

A splendid show is promised in the sheep and cattle divisions and the poultry department will be crowded, according to present indications.

The grounds will be in splendid shape for the event as work of preparation will begin in the next ten days.

The new arrangement of buildings since their reconstruction below the grandstand will prove popular with patrons and will add much to the convenience of handling, not only show but racing animals.

FAIR DAYS 1930-1939

Better Band Contest To Be Feature at County Fair July 31, 1936 — The Sanpete County Fair Association is aiming to have a Band meet on the opening day at the County Fair at which it is hoped to have all the bands in Sanpete County participate. It will be

in the nature of a big parade. Outside people will be selected to act as judges for the best three bands who will play each day at the Fair and be paid by the Fair Association as the reward for winning in the contest.

Plans are also being made to have an automobile show at the Fair and it is expected all agents in the County will appear with their finest models.

One feature of the big event is to make the County Fair a homecoming, especially for the city of Manti, but the entire county is invited to partake of the spirit of the occasion and join in the big event.

A Race Meet or program will be arranged. The Fair Association wants it to be a regular Derby for Sanpete County. There will be good purses offered. It was decided to make them good enough to interest the best in the state, and to equal those given at Payson. The program will be of equal size each day.

There will be a Shetland pony given away on the last day of the Fair.

Sanpete County Won’t Have Fair This Year Aug. 27, 1948 — There will be no Sanpete county fair this year.

That is the decision of the county commission, according to Dr. S.B. Rigby of Fairview, chairman.

Ordinarily conducted in the early fall at Manti, the fair has been temporarily abandoned this year, said Dr. Rigby, because funds available to not appear to be sufficient.

Under state law, Sanpete county is allowed to levy annually approximately $1,800 for county fair expenses, he explained.

Of this amount $400 is granted outright to the annual Rambouillet Days celebration at Ephraim and an additional $200 goes for maintenance of the fair grounds at Manti. This leaves approximately $1200 for expenditure on a county fair.

At first, it looked as if county civic clubs, specifically those in Manti, might undertake sponsorship of a rodeo in conjunction with this year’s county fair, Dr. Rigby said, but that plan was later dropped.

He said Manti civic leaders have promised to take the initiative in planning a county fair for next year.

FAIR DAYS 1940-1949

County Fair Is Set For Next Week Aug. 23, 1940 — Only a few days remain in which the people of Sanpete County will have to make ready for the annual County Fair. The dates this year have been set for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, August 27, 28 and 29.

Officers of the annual event report that a most entertaining exhibition will be given this year. It is hoped that people will enjoy it more than other shows as they have tried to get better entertainment for the money.

One of the outstanding features of the sports is the races which is planned to have an all county program. All the races will be home products, that is, county ponies. This will mean that a lot of local interest will be given to each race. When strange horses are running the local people do not care much which one wins, just so they have a little bet up. With local horses it will give much interest to the owners and their friends.

There will be special programs given such as the White City Shows, Inc. One exciting feature is the live human cannon ball to be shot out of a cannon. This may be fun for the one in the cannon, but, excuse us. We would prefer wings. Yet, they say it is a lot of fun.

The exhibits will be well worth seeing. In spite of a dry

year there are many products of the farm worthy of merit.

Although the county fair comes once a year and one may think that they do not care so much for a county fair, we should remember that it is educational and much effort is put forth to excel in the various exhibits. It is beneficial for the younger boys and girls, especially if they take part in the exhibition.

Let’s all go to the county fair, August 27, 28, and 29.

Aug. 5, 1949 — Americans like bigness. Most county fairs hope to grow larger. When a man starts out in business, it goes without saying that he hopes his business will grow. We all agree pretty generally that this is a healthy viewpoint, and some county fairs do grow, do become big fairs.

With Fair facilities in good order, with energetic committees and department supervisors, the Sanpete County Fair for 1949 will be a big business because of the leadership developed. A program unequaled in history is dated for August 18, 19 and 20.

Sanpete County Commissioners and Manti people are all on the job to make the County Fair bigger and better.

Exhibitors are now urged to prepare their choice produce such as fruit, vegetables, flowers, handicraft, art, livestock, etc., for display.

Every individual of Sanpete County is entitled to a day or more vacation. The County Fair affords an opportunity for education, plus a lot of pleasure. Circle the dates on your calendar and bring the entire family to the Fair!

North Sanpete Exhibitors Among Winners At Fair Aug. 26, 1949 — One of the best livestock exhibits ever to be brought together in Sanpete County was displayed at the Sanpete County Fair August 18, 19, and 20 at Manti, Russell Keetch, County agent declared this week. All exhibits were of highest quality.

There were no entries which wouldn’t look good at fairs and shows of the state, Mr. Keetch said.

There were 152 head of stock exhibited: 59 sheep, 35 dairy, 25 beef, 22 horses, 11 swine, and 6 pens of rabbits and pets.

Champions and blue ribbon winners from North Sanpete were as follows: Class 15 - Ben Lamb & Sons, Wales. Class 14 - Howard Blackham, Moroni. Ben Lamb & Sons, Wales.

Mt. Pleasant Senior Wins Honors to Reign As Queen of Sanpete County Fair Aug. 29, 1952 — Miss Loretta Bohne, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray K. Bohne of Mt. Pleasant, was selected queen of Sanpete County by decision of the judges at the Sanpete County Queen contest held at the Court House in Manti on August 22.

The six contestants were judged on poise, beauty, talent and voice.

Each girl appeared before the judges in a formal, a bathing suit and an afternoon dress.

The girls were interviewed by the judges and were given an opportunity to display their talent. Miss Bohne played a piano solo, “Impromptu”

by McDowell as her offering in the talent division.

Loretta, a senior at North Sanpete high school, will reign over the Sanpete County Fair Sept. 4, 5 and 6 and will ride on the Sanpete County Queen float in the parade on September 4.

Miss Bohne, active in music and dramatic circles, will represent Sanpete County at the Utah State Fair and will compete for the title of Miss Utah.

Miss Katherine Armstrong of Ephraim was named first alternate at the contest. She sang a solo. Miss Donna Bunnell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Bunnell of Spring City, was named second alternate. She played a piano solo.

Sanpete County Fair Wheels Set in Motion for Sept. 1-3 Aug. 14, 1953 — The Sanpete County Fair for 1953 will be held as a mid-week event this year, holding forth on September 1, 2 and 3. The fair planning is under the chairmanship of Kenneth Keller, Manti, and complete departmental assignments have been made by him.

The program of entertainment for the Fair has been outlined as follows:

FAIR DAYS 1950-1959 Sanpete County Fair Attracts Large Crowds; To Continue 2 More Days Sept. 5, 1952 — One day gone and two to go is the score of the 1952 Sanpete County Fair in Manti.

Hundreds of people lined the streets to 5th South on Main in Manti Thursday afternoon where the mammoth parade formed and proceeded north to the fair grounds, according to Ray K. Bohne, parade chairman.

Thursday’s parade had 46 entrants and was led by J. Leo Seely of Mt. Pleasant, John Baxter of Gunnison, and little Johnnie Ross Seely of this city.

The lineup was as follows: Color Guard; County Queen float, made by Manti Literary club; county commissioners; Fairview Queen float; Mayfield Queen float; Hamilton School Band; Mt. FAIR DAYS 1960-1969

County fair opens Wednesday at Manti Aug. 7, 1964 — In a meeting of the Fair Board held recently at the court house in Manti, final preparations were made for the Sanpete County Fair to be held August 12 through 15, and several appointments were made to key positions.

Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Nielson had accepted the position of chairman of the exhibition building, it was reported, and Mrs. Sybil Bessey announced that the Sanpete County Queen Contest was well underway. Director Holm of Snow College has been asked to award a scholarship to the winner of the contest.

The director agreed to do this, provided the winner has maintained a “B” average and can offer some talent to the school.

It was decided to hold a tea for contestants, their parents and the judges.

A report was given by Bruce Allred which showed that the afternoon race meet and entertainment was coming along very good. He said there would be two new faces added to the program this year, a cold race and a “small” horse race. The races on Friday will begin at 2 p.m. and they will get underway on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Mr. Allred announced the list of committeemen working with him and representing the riding clubs in the county are as follows: Jack Howard, Manti; Eddie Bench, Fairview; Steve Hone, Gunnison and Ted Peterson, Ephraim.

The new extension agent for Sanpete, Del Purnell, was introduced by Dennis Funk. Mr. Purnell will be replacing Mr. Funk in the near future.

Mr. Funk also announced the judges for this year’s fair as follows: Professor Milt Madsen of USU, sheep; Jim Peterson, Panguitch, horses; Carl Hatch, USU Extension Service, Kanab, swine and beef; Merrill Warnick, Pleasant Grove, dairy; and Robert Hassell, USU Extension Service,

Ned Madsen, who is fair board chairman, said the fair will open August 11 when the doors swing open to receive exhibits, and will close August 15 with the concluding performance of a professional rodeo.

Beauty contest set Wednesday at fair Aug. 28, 1967 — Wednesday, Aug. 23, marks the date of the annual Miss Sanpete Beauty Pageant.

There will be twelve of the most beautiful girls in Sanpete County participating in this contest.

A “Queen’s Reception” will highlight the afternoon following a private bathing suit competition and interview with the judges.

The public is invited to attend the talent and evening gown competition which will begin at 8:30 p.m. in Manti High School Auditorium. Miss Sanpete of 1966, Lynda Johnson, will crown the new Miss Sanpete.

Contestants vying for the coveted title of Miss Sanpete are Susan Gaye Carlston, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Golden Carlston, Fairview; Rita Kay Hill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester J. FAIR DAYS 1960-1969

County Fair features many fun events Aug. 25, 1967 — The festivities connected with the annual Sanpete County Fair will come to a climax Friday and Saturday, August 25 and 26 at Manti with horse shows, races, rodeo entertainment, and the Sanpete County Fair Parade.

These events will have been preceded Thursday by the county swim meet at 1 p.m. in the Manti Swimming Pool; the 4-H Horse Show at 1 p.m. at the fairgrounds, the Farm Bureau Talent Find at the Snow College Auditorium in Ephraim at 8 p.m., and professional, all-girls wrestling at the fairgrounds, also at 8 p.m.

Friday’s fair entertainment will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a horse show at the fairgrounds where performance classes and 4-H halter classes will be judged. Horse races will be held at 2 p.m. with animals from Sanpete County and other areas running in seven adult races and one kid-pony race.

The races for Friday will have been drawn up at 7 a.m. that morning, with owners registering their animals at the fairgrounds stables the previous evening at 6 p.m.

Competition in two consecutive days of racing will be for $1000 in purses, sponsored in part by the communities and businesses of Sanpete County.

Typical of the action to be seen at the Sanpete County Fair Rodeo tonight and tomorrow night in Manti is this scene. Other events during the day include horse shows, races, and parade.

Parade is set for 6 p.m.

The Flying Bar B C Championship Rodeo owned by Buss Carson and his son has been engaged to entertain local people at 8 p.m. with seven events, more bucking horses than have ever been in Sanpete, and drills presented by local riding groups.

Neil Garrett, a nationally-known clown and bullfighter, and Harold Jones, a rodeo announcer from Utah, will perform for the public.

Gold Lightening, a horse that has never been successfully ridden, will also be on hand.

The rodeo will be preceded at 7:30 p.m. by a parade of livestock champions, the announcement of exhibition building winners, and the presentation of Miss Sanpete County to her subjects.

More entertainment will be provided by the Beehive Exposition Shows that have been on the midway since Wednesday, August 23.

Friday’s events will be duplicated Saturday with several additions. At 10 a.m., two 4-H contests will be held in the Manti North Ward Cultural Hall. They are the public speaking and demonstration contests.

At 6 p.m. Sanpete citizens will congregate on Manti’s Main Street to view the Sanpete County Fair Parade with entries from cities, manufacturers, riding clubs, businessmen, and jeep patrols.

Horse show judging Saturday will be for halter classes.

That day’s horse races will be drawn up at 7 a.m. with registration 6 p.m.

Friday.Rasmussen Owners Jeffatand Trish Livestock will be released from the barns at 5 p.m. Saturday, with premiums being paid after the parade. Exhibitors in exhibition building departments are encouraged to call for their property after 8 p.m. If this is impossible, exhibits can be called for between 2 and 4 p.m. Sunday, August 27.

FAIR DAYS 1970-1979

County fair in high gear this weekend Aug. 26, 1976 — Sanpete County will show its best as the main part of the county fair opens this weekend at the fair grounds in Manti.

Featured in the annual event will be livestock judging, exhibition of home economics items, fine arts, animals and 4-H projects. Horse racing, a rodeo and horse show will also be featured among the main events.

Starting with tonight a talent fine sponsored by the Sanpete County Farm Bureau will be held in the Manti Center Ward at 8 p.m. The three day event will start at 8 a.m. at the rodeo grounds when the 4-H horse show gets under-way.

A pet show is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Friday’s events will include the 4-H livestock judging contest at 8 a.m. with horse races at 2 p.m. and the rodeo at 8 p.m.

Saturday will feature the Open Class Horse Show at 9 a.m., Horse races at 2 p.m., mammoth parade at 6 p.m. down Manti Main Street, and rodeo at 8 p.m.

The City of Fun Carnival will be operating all three days of the fair, as well as the exhibits, food concessions and other items connected with the fair.

association standings will be at the rodeo and Friday will feature 12 contestants from the state ladies barrel racing association for a special competition for semi-final state standings.

A new event, in addition to all traditional events at rodeos, will be featured at the rodeo called hide racing.

Contestants will tie a cow hide to their horses and race in pairs to the other end of the arena where another cowboy will jump on the trailing hide and must be pulled back to the other end of the arena. All contestants will be working against time.

The 4-H riding drill team from Mt. Pleasant will also be featured at the rodeo and a special act featuring A. Duain Madsen and his trained pulling sheep will be on hand.

Special blankets will be awarded all winners at the horse races plus a prize for the leading jockey and for the two featured races each day. Purses for the races will run from $150 to $300. Cutter races will also be featured with teams from Springville sponsored by Dean Brian.

The fair is a once-a-year event for the county and is presented for residents of the county. All are therefore encouraged to attend some or all of the events during the weekend.

Sanpete pageant is a great success Aug. 26, 1971 — A very successful Miss Sanpete Pageant was held the evening of August 21 with Miss Deborah Kae Howell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Howell of Manti, being crowned Miss Sanpete by last year’s Miss Sanpete, Jeannine Howell.

Mary Ruth Barton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Barton, Manti, was named first attendant, and crowned by last year’s first attendant, Dixie Rosenlof. Peggy Childs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Childs, Gunnison, second attendant, was crowned by Carolyn Bigler Nielson, last year’s second attendant. Alternate is Barbara Olsen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Olsen, Ephraim; and second alternate, Cynthia Graham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Graham, Manti.

Bob Welti of TV and radio fame, was master of ceremonies for the program. Mrs. Bruce Barton and her committee, Mrs. Lyle Alder, Mrs. Demont Howell, Mrs. Leon Olsen, Mrs. Carl Jensen and Mrs. Travis Rosenlof, were in charge.

County fair begins this weekend Aug. 14, 1975 — Things are moving right along in preparation for the Sanpete County Fair. Family tickets sales are moving very good in some areas and rather poorly in others. There will be no family tickets available after August 20th (Wed) so contact your local 4-H Horse club leader if you haven’t got your tickets yet.

Fair books now available free Aug. 19, 1971 — Sanpete County Fair books are available free of charge and can be picked up at any local business establishment which supported the Fair Book committee.

All books have a number on the front cover. Jack Herring, chairman of the Fair committee this year, advises everyone to hang onto their books as prizes will be given to some of these numbers. He also advises you to read the books as it has many interesting historical topics throughout and also contains the County Fair program.

Copies of the rules governing exhibits of livestock at the Sanpete County Fair can be picked up at any grocery store in the county or at the County Agent’s office.

Mr. Herring said that local residents are encouraged to get the family ticket as this is the most economical way for the family to enjoy the Fair, the rodeo and race meet.

Those who didn’t attend the county queen pageant at Gunnison last Saturday evening missed some of the best entertainment of the year. This county is loaded with exceptional talent and beautiful girls, and Arta Higgins did a tremendous job with the pageant arrangements.

The fairbooks are available to you free of charge at any local business establishment who bought ad space in the book. This will have to be one of the very best fairbooks ever. Carole Mellow and her fairbook committee have done an outstanding job and on behalf of the Fair board we wish to publicly express our appreciation to them for a job well done.

No light in sight as yet for a carnival and we are once again asking local civic clubs, church groups, 4-H Clubs, or any other organization to come forth with some entertainment ideas. We are especially interested in some ideas which will provide entertainment for the young kids. If your group has an idea contact Earl Clark or Jack Herring.

County fair events underway

By Judy Zumwalt Aug. 26, 1987 — MANTI—It’s Sanpete County Fair time!

“I feel this year’s fair is as good as any we’ve had,” Chairman Gary Syrup commented as the annual event gets into full gear.

A number of fair activities — Miss Sanpete pageant, open horse show, horseshoe pitching tournament, Sylvia in concert, the 4-H horse show and the Farm Bureau Talent Find — are history.

“Looking back, I feel we have improved the quality of the Sanpete County Fair every year,” the fair chairman said. “I feel really good going into this one.”

Today, Wednesday, will see the 4-H Style Dress Revue judging at 4 p.m. and the public fashion show at 7 p.m., both at the Manti City building.

Thursday is the official opening of the Exhibit Building and the popular Demolition Derby. A new fair feature this year is performances by local talent in front of the Exhibition Building. Joe and Eloise Liddell of Manti are in charge.

Eight teams will compete in a Tug-of-War between heats of the Demolition Derby, which begins at 7 p.m.

The eight man, two woman teams will pull for five minutes.

Friday’s activities begin with livestock judging at 9:30 a.m., followed by small animal judging at 10 a.m. and the Open Class Pet Show at noon. Hal Winterton and sons of Roosevelt will present their “Indian Method” of horse breaking at 2 p.m. Local talent will perform f rom 4 until 7:30 p.m.

Clegg Championship Rodeo will begin at 8 p.m. with amateur bareback bronc riding as a special attraction.

Also scheduled are a wild pony scramble, where children will have the opportunity to win a pony by grabbing the ribbon tied to its mane or tail. Kids from 7 to 10 years and under will compete Saturday night.

Professional rodeo clowns will compete each night in the Richfield Coca-Cola sponsored bullfighting contest, a new event at the fair.

The “Cook Out King” contest gets underway at 12:01 p.m. with judging of cooked entries at 1 p.m. The winner will represent the county at the state fair competition.

Intermountain Horse Pullers pulling matches begin at 2 p.m., with from 12 to 20 teams scheduled to compete.

The county fair parade gets going down Manti’s main street at 6 p.m. and the final performance of the rodeo winds things up at 8 p.m.

Parade winners Aug. 30, 1989 — MANTI—A float entered by the Vietnam veterans from Manti was the Sweepstakes winner in the Sanpete County Fair Parade Saturday.

Other winners were Ed Munger and his bagpipes from Gunnison and the Far West Bank float, which featured the Sheepherders from Fairview.

Also winning was the float entered by Coca Cola of Richfield.

FAIR DAYS 1980-1989

Fair booth to focus on U.S. Constitution Aug. 25, 1987 — MANTI—With the approach of Constitution Day September 17, activities in celebration of the 200 birthday of that important document are taking on new impetus.

FUND RAISERS The sale of several items to raise funds for some of the activities will be launched this week at a Constitution Booth at the Sanpete County Fair.

Among items county residents will want to buy are full colored Constitution bumper stickers; proclaiming “We the People” - the theme of the Constitution celebration; t-shirts and caps with the official Bicentennial Constitution emblem; and a pin commemorating the celebration.

RECENT ACTIVITIES Past events commemorating the birthday include the display of Constitutional Bicentennial banners at the Manti Pageant before the 134,000 in attendance. The blue and white banners were part of the opening ceremonies each evening of the Pageant performance and will be entered in the Sanpete County Fair parade Aug. 29. Two of the banners measure 4 by 21 ft. and the other is 4 by 35 ft. and proclaim the celebration theme.

The Theme “We the People” is also the theme of the 1987 Fair Book, and appropriate sections and information are found throughout the book.

Thirteen vie for Miss Sanpete County Aug. 12, 1998 — MANTI—The Miss Sanpete County Scholarship Pageant will be held Saturday, Aug. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Manti High School Auditorium. Thirteen girls will be competing.

The mistress of ceremonies are: Katie Anderson, reigning Miss Sanpete County, and Holly Lynn Holman, Miss Utah Valley and attendant to Miss Utah.

Cowboy poetry to be featured at County Fair Aug. 13, 1997 — MANTI—Cowboy Poetry will be a featured attraction again this year during the Sanpete County Fair at 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 22 in the grandstand of the Fair Grounds.

Confirmed guests include cowboy poets, Don Morris and West Peterson from Delta, who present homespun humor and cowboy stories.

New presenters include Rick Howe telling stories of the “Fighting Rooster,” and Ross Nordell and his “Cowboy and the Computer.” Returning poets, Sam DeLeeuw and Joe Frischknecht will add their special flare to the program, along with several other true-life cowboy poets.

The free public program is sponsored by the Sanpete County Fairboard, which promotes the fair as a family activity and tries to make as many activities as possible available to the public.

Get ready to take in the Sanpete County Fair Aug. 16, 2007 — MANTI—Yes, folks, it’s fair time once again, so dig out those “fair duds” and head to Manti to enjoy all the events ad activities the Sanpete County Fair has to offer.

The new Miss Sanpete Royalty, Queen Kayla Barclay and her attendants, Cari Garff, Whitney Son and Alisha Childs will reign over the fair festivities.

Events and activities get into full swing Saturday, Aug. 18, with the open horse show at 8 a.m., in the arena.

Bring a picnic lunch and plan to spend the day watching the beautiful horses showing off their stuff, There will be events for everyone, whether it be halter classes, Shetland and Welsch ponies, trailer and other races.

Monday, Aug. 20, plan to be at Manti High School at 7 p.m. for the annual cowboy poetry and music festival. This event brings talent from all over the state for the enjoyment of everyone. It is great family entertainment.

The Exhibition Building opens Wednesday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m., and the midway entertainment and concessions open at 5 p.m. In the fairgrounds arena at 6:30 p.m., there will be team sorting competition and the annual Farm Bureau Talent Find will take place at 7 p.m., at Manti High School.

Get ready to “rumble” Thursday, Aug. 23, as one of the

most popular events of the fair gets underway at 7 p.m., Yes, it is the annual demolition derby, where drivers from many points in the state converge in the arena to see who can outlast the others.

The open pet show, always an interesting event, will be held at 11 a.m. People will be amazed what shows up here. There will be a Dutch Oven cook-off at 5 p.m., in front of the Exhibition Building.

Everyone loves a parade and “cruzin’ Main Street” is one of the best. Be on hand at 6 p.m., to be part of it and then be sure to catch LuDon and SoundQwest at 7 p.m. and stay for the rodeo at 8 p.m.

Rise early Saturday, Aug. 25, and take part in the annual fun run, beginning at 7 a.m., at Manti High School track; work up an appetite for breakfast at 8 a.m., then travel on over to the arena for the tractor pulls.

Don’t forget to go watch the mud volleyball at 10 a.m.

There will also be the wild horse adoption at 10 a.m.

Hungry after all this? Good, because the beef producers will hold their dinner at 12 p.m.

The ever-popular horse pulls in the arena at 1 p.m. will keep everyone entertained until the mammoth parade starts at 5 p.m., just in time to go to the grandstands to listen to LuDon and SoundQwest again at 7 p.m. Stay and enjoy the rodeo at 8 p.m., to finish out the 2007 Sanpete County Fair.

Sanpete Life: Sanpete Fair time

By Merrill Ogden Aug. 16, 2007 — County fair time in Sanpete is a terrific time.

At a time when some counties question whether to continue with the tradition of an annual county fair, Sanpete’s fair continues.

The fair is underway and is full of entertainment and excitement for everyone. But if you’re a kid, when I say “county fair” you hear “carnival.” Images of the zipper, tilt-a-whirl and ferris wheel are immediately conjured up.

My children have grown up (well, sort of ) so the carnival doesn’t have quite the same attraction as it once had for them. But, I remember not too many years ago, when my kids would go literally non-stop for hours on the carnival rides.

With an unlimited ride pass, there was no stopping for food or anything else. It was a marathon. It was amazing

to see them getting the thrills out of going on those rides.

As for me, the ferris wheel is my ride of choice at the carnival in my “advanced years.” I love it when the wheel stops me at the top. It gives me a bird’s eye view of the fairgrounds. I can look into the rodeo arena. I can recognize and watch people as they mill around the carnival midway.

To me, the ferris wheel is a calm, sensible amusement.

Time was when I would ride the rock-o-plans upside down for the entire duration of the ride and felt like I was in heaven. Times have changed.

Ironically, the ferris wheel is my wife’s least favorite carnival ride. She feels like she’s going to fall out as the car crests the top and starts downward. Something about that sensation freaks her out.

Sometimes in the past, my wife and I have made a deal that we can each choose one ride for both of us to “enjoy” together. I choose the ferris wheel, which she hates, and she, to keep the ledger balanced, chooses the See SANPETE FAIR TIME on Page 40

The round-up is the ride that is like being strapped onto the edge of a giant record turntable set at 78 speed. (I know there may be some of you younger readers who may not understand that metaphor. Ask someone from the pre-music CD era.)

Once they get you spinning and just when you think the centrifugal force is going to break your neck; they raise this monstrosity up on its side. At that point, I feel like an ant stuck on a cooling fan.

When I get off that thing, I’m so dizzy I have to lie down somewhere and wait until the earth stops rotating 90 miles an hour beneath me. What could be more fun than deliberately making yourself sick?

Of course, there’s a lot more to the fair than the carnival. The rodeo is popular. The demolition derby is always a huge draw. For some reason, which is not entirely clear to me, we love to see cars bash into each other.

What I really like about the fair is the old traditional “fair fare.” I enjoy strolling through the exhibition building. It’s fun to see who’s showing rabbits, pigeons,

sheep, pigs, chickens and cattle.

I have to see that prize winning zucchini squash. I want to see which bottle of jam got a blue ribbon. (I got one last year for my apricot jam.)

Looking at the 4-H club bug collections is always a highlight. Serious. (This coming Monday is the day to enter exhibits at the Exhibition Building, from 3-6 p.m.)

Plan to get in on the fun of the Sanpete County Fair.

Don’t miss it. The big parade is Saturday, Aug. 25 and there will be plenty to see and do between now and then. The car show alone is worth your time to come to the fairgrounds on that same Saturday.

FAIR DAYS 2010-2019

There’s no time like fair time Aug. 14, 2010 — MANTI—Summer months rush by and now it is once again time for the Sanpete County Fair., Kids, and parents, are anxious for school to start but first head to Manti for fun at the fair.

Fair tickets are on sale at Beck’s Home Furnishings, Mt. Pleasant; T&R Sports, Ephraim; Sanpete County Building Inspector’s Office, Manti; and Ace Hardware and Gunnison Market, Gunnison. There are no online ticket sales this year. The fair committee apologizes for the inconvenience.

Rodeo entry call-ins will be accepted Thursday, Aug. 14, at RMPRA office, (719) 486-0599 or at www.rmpraonline.com. There will e a 4H horse show registration at 4 p.m., with horse show test at 4:30 p.m., followed at 5 p.m., by the 4H horse show at the fairground arena.

Last year’s fair marked the loss of the nearly 100-year-old iconic grandstand. This year marks the beginning of a new era, a new arena and a new grandstand for the Sanpete County Fairgrounds.

The renovation continues, there is much to do to complete the upgrades. We invite all to become part of this renovation and new era. Come to the Sanpete County Fair and be part of One Grand Celebration!

Jr. Rodeo will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, Aug. 15. Also, Miss Sanpete County Outstanding Teen Pageant will be held at Gunnison High School.

Saturday, Aug. 16, the fair goes into full swing at 8 a.m., with the Sanpete County open horse show in the arena. Books close at 7:30 a.m. There will be open swimming at the Aquatic Center beginning at 10 a.m.

Also a Bunco Tournament, baby contest and Little Miss Pageant will all be held at 10 a.m.

From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., the annual Sanpete Outdoor Expo and cooking will be at the Home Trade Show and at 1 p.m., the Dutch oven cook-off will be held. Open class and 4H projects will be accepted from Noon to 6 p.m., at the Exhibit Building, except baked goods, vegetables and floral entries.

Sunday, Aug. 17 is the last day to register 4H projects for the Exhibit Building. Also, hometown entries for hide races will be accepted from 12 to 6 p.m.

Open class and 4H baked goods and vegetables will be accepted from 3 to 6 p.m., Monday, Aug. 18, at the Exhibit Building and at 7 p.m., there will be team sorting in the arena.

Wednesday, Aug. 20 begins a full day at the fair, beginning with open class florals being accepted from 9 to 11 a.m., at the Exhibit building. Small animal barn entries are received from 12 to 5 p.m.

The Exhibit Building opens to the public at 2 p.m., and remains open until 7 p.m. Lamb, swine and market beef receiving, weigh-in and Jr. livestock testing will take place between 5 and 8 p.m.

The annual Farm Bureau Talent Night will be held at 7 p.m., at Manti High School and Pee-Wee motor barrel racing will stir up the dirt in the fairground arena. From 7 to 9 p.m., pet owners may pre-register for the pet show, limited to the first 50 entries.

FAIR DAYS 2010-2019

Hey, it’s finally fair time this Thursday Aug. 20, 2015 — MANTI—That wonderful time of the year, fair time, is finally here. Things begin to pop on the Sanpete County Fairgrounds this week, beginning Thursday, Aug. 20, with all 4H fair exhibits being entered in the online system.

At 4 p.m., Aug. 20, 4H members will register for the annual horse show, with testing at 4:30 p.m., and the horse show, at 5 p.m., in the arena.

Friday, Aug. 21, at 6 p.m., little cowboys and cowgirls will enter the rodeo arena and test their young wrangling, roping and riding skills as they compete in the Junior Rodeo.

The rodeo will include many events including mutton bustin’ for ages three through six; calf riding, ages seven through nine; steer riding, 10 to through 13; junior barrels, 12 and under; senior barrels, 13 through 17; and senior steers, 14 through 16.

Between events, all participants are encouraged to get in the game with several activities including the money calf for children ages nine and under or the money steer for those age 10 through 14.

There will also be stick horse races, with each participant bringing their own ‘steed.’ At the end of the event, a barnyard scramble will be held. All youngsters will be able to enter the arena and try to capture themselves a new pet.

Trophies will be given for first, second and third place in each event. The top 10 mutton busters will come back to participate in the pre-rodeo mutton bustin’ and the top 10 steer riders will come back to participate in the final rodeo as pre-rodeo entertainment.

Come on back to the fairgrounds bright and early Saturday, Aug. 22, to watch the Sanpete County Open Horse Show at 9 a.m., in the arena. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., wander through the annual outdoor expo and family focus home show.

There will be open swimming at the Aquatic Center beginning at Noon. Head over to the pavilion to witness Dutch oven chefs from all around the county as they cook up a storm, creating tasty tidbits for judging.

Of course, after being exposed to all those delicious aromas, everyone will want to taste them. Plates of the food will be available for sale following the judging.

Now that those hunger pangs are satisfied, go over to the arena for the annual fireman’s challenge where firefighters will demonstrate skills learned through extensive training. Be aware that those brave souls who choose to sit in the first several rows in the grand stands, they are likely to get a bit damp or maybe soaked.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning team to be used for equipment for their fire stations.

Cowboys, and some cowgirls, have a tendency of telling “tall tales,” and singing folk songs while gathered around a campfire.

There will not be a campfire Monday, Aug. 24, at Manti High School, but there will be some interesting commentary when well-known regional poet Andy Nelson takes the stage at 7 p.m.

Also, 2015 King Cowboy Joe Frischknecht will entertain the audience. Lee Sorensen, Mayfield will be emcee.

Tuesday, Aug. 25, the ever-popular team sorting event will begin at 6 p.m. Practical ranching experience comes in handy for this event. While not a rodeo sport, team sorting demonstrates just how ranchers sort cattle.

The event includes four different classes, youth, open, pro-Am and mixed. Local cowpokes are encouraged to sign up and all riders are welcome. Winners receive a cash prize and jackets.

Also, Aug. 26 is the first day the Exhibit Building will be open to the public from 2 until 8 p.m., where people can spend a relaxing afternoon wandering though and admiring, the wide variety of items on display from the talented residents of Sanpete County.

Newly formed junior fair board helping oversee fair events From the 2017 Fair Book — While attending the annual Utah Association of Fairs and Events convention, members of the Sanpete County Fair Board had the opportunity to attend a session on junior fair boards.

Juab County has had a junior fair board in place for a few years now and has witnessed the success that has come through keeping younger generations involved in the fair. It is a great way of investing in the fair operations for many generations to come as the youth see first-hand what it takes to organize such an event. The youth are able to implement their own ideas at the fair as well.

Early this spring, the fair board sent out junior fair board applications to each h high school and asked that they distribute them within their schools. The board received seven applications and decided to accept all of them.

The junior fair board meets regularly like the regular fair board and is overseen by the chairman and co-chairs.

This year, the junior board will oversee the Firemen’s Challenge as well as other events.

For more than 40 years, Sanpete County’s pet owners have brought their dogs, cats, rabbits, reptiles, birds and more to compete in the Sanpete County Fair Open Pet Show. You may ask, “What is a pet?” Well, quite simply and concisely, a pet can be almost anything. Who is to say that a mouse, spider, snake or a starling can’t be a pet? As the old saying goes, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” and that also applies to pets. Entry categories are small dog, large dog, cat, rabbit, reptile, bird and foul, costume, large pet, most unusual and open.
