Gathering Place

Other top firms said it was impossible. We asked, “When can we start?”
Stepping in when others failed.
Gathering Place was initially under contract with another construction firm. It was nearing the completion of the demolition phase and already $50 million over budget when The Kaiser Foundation contacted the Crossland team. This type of project doesn’t come along every day, and we were honored to take on the challenge.
After meeting with the Kaiser Foundation, we had a good grasp of their vision and we were positive we could improve the project’s trajectory. Our team visited top-ranked parks in the nation to assess what worked and what didn’t work. We worked hand-and-hand with the architect, Michael Van Valkenburgh, to move the project forward.

A park with plush green space, underground facilities, and details galore.
A series of park paths measuring six miles in total, two land bridges spanning Riverside Drive, and three wood timber bridges link the Gathering Place together. Plans included the construction of numerous buildings, state-of-the-art playground equipment, and acres of customized green space.

Site work was often dependent on the weather and the river’s waterline. From day one, crews were working around-the-clock to make sure the schedule stayed on track. Through the hottest and coldest days, year-round, our teams powered through to ensure the quality of this project. On any given day, between 150-500 construction staff were on the job site.
How we accomplished what some said was impossible. Crossland teams self-performed the Boathouse building concrete, the structural steel in the Lodge, and other areas across the park. We also supplemented several of the subcontractors, whose scopes included site concrete, earthwork, and landscaping. Each time we engaged our own self-performance crews, we were able to ensure the quality of the project and make up for any lost time in the schedule.

Making sure subcontractors understood the bigger vision was critical. Crossland, the owner and the architect reviewed many mockups from subcontractors before any installation was performed to ensure everything was perfect when complete. We managed nearly 100 subcontractors for the different project phases and features of the 66.5-acre project. Utilizing subcontractors previously vetted by Crossland was a calculated maneuver that simplified the management of the various project scopes.

WOKA White Water Kayak Park
Watts, OK
Transforming Nature into Thrills
Blast through limestone, divert a river, and create a world-class whitewater park. Ok, sure. We can do that!
From 2020 to 2023, Crossland Construction took on the exciting and challenging task of creating The Waters of Oklahoma and Arkansas (WOKA) Whitewater Park in Watts, Oklahoma.
Thrills and Chills
WOKA is a $29.4 million, best-in-class whitewater park featuring a 1,200-foot long, 100-foot wide side channel off the Illinois River with eight drop-features for an unforgettable experience. The project, made possible through philanthropic support from the Walton Family Foundation, not only provides heart-pumping wave action for kayakers, surfers, and tubers of all skill levels but also offers a serene retreat to revel in the beauty of nature. The park’s inception traces back to 2011, and Crossland played a pivotal role from pre-construction to completion. The core tasks involved blasting through limestone, creating whitewater features, diverting the Illinois River, and performing crucial mitigation work on the Lake Frances dam.
Challenging Landscape
Navigating this challenging landscape required meticulous planning and execution. Various means, methods, and equipment were considered, influencing the feasibility of design ideas. Wildlife protection and wetland mitigation took precedence, and measures were implemented to assess and prevent potential damages caused by flooding events during construction. The exterior features, including limestone,

concrete, boulders, water, CMU, and timber framing, showcased the integration of nature and construction. The use of sculpted concrete, rubber-coated stainless steel hydraulic gates, O-Pile, blasting, lidar mapping, and rock/boulder phasing demonstrated innovation and adaptability. Repurposed materials from the whitewater course construction were ingeniously used to create a “stair-step” dam, mitigating hydraulic conditions and dangerous currents.
Working Together
Collaboration was paramount throughout the project. Crossland worked closely with the Watts, OK Police Department for security, the City of Siloam Springs, AR for dam mitigation, Adair County, OK, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, and the Cherokee Tribe for road improvements. This meticulous collaboration resulted in a whitewater park that is a testament to teamwork and ingenuity, rivaling any in the nation and set amidst the breathtaking Ozark Mountains.
The completion of WOKA Whitewater Park was not just a construction project; it was a transformation of nature into an exhilarating recreational space.

Taking visitors on a journey under the sea
It’s not every day you see a 55-foot-tall, 42,000 lb. octopus enveloping a building. Thankfully, “Aquarius” — aptly named — is merely the gorgeous architectural entrance to the Aquarium at the Boardwalk. The latest attraction for kids and kids at heart in Branson, MO, was built from the ground up by our brilliant Crossland team. Aquarius is the highlight feature of the building, with his 10,000 stainless steel panels glistening over the entrance. At night, his interior lights up making an already traffic-stopping site even more spectacular! The impressive aquarium is home to 250 marine animal species from the U.S. coast and far-away waters of Australia.
A Complex Design
The 46,000 SF aquarium demonstrates Crossland’s expertise in intricate and complicated architectural concrete work and our adaptability to complex projects’ design changes. In addition to ongoing close coordination with the owner and design firm, our team engaged in a lengthy process to understand their vision at the project’s start. Our team was able to value-engineer the budget and timeline to meet their project goals.
An Intricate Interior
The exhibits are very interactive. A 24-foot-high kelp forest climbing structure for kids, pop-up bubbles within the tanks, and a mermaid tail photo op, to name a few. The impressive architectural rockwork and coral throughout were developed and installed by Crossland. Eight customized resinous floors identify the multiple zones throughout the building, designed to tell a story about the importance of the oceans and marine life to our planet.

In loving memory of our founder, Ivan “Red Iron” Crossland, Sr.

We had a unique start, which we think explains a lot about us.
Ask any one of our 1700+ employees what our founder, Ivan Crossland, Sr., stood for—every single one would say family, honesty , and hard work. Those values are engrained in everything we do.
our story
Our story began in 1977 with our founder, the late Ivan Crossland, Sr., lovingly known as ‘Red Iron’. He started Crossland Construction out of the family garage with a wife and ten kids at home. His optimism, integrity, work ethic, and grit led him to success in every endeavor. His story became the embodiment of The American Dream, but more importantly, it continues to inspire us every day.
Today, we are humbled by our continued growth over the years.
