Building Active Spaces That Bring Communities Together

Parks, trails, rec centers, and green spaces do more than improve a neighborhood — they give people a place to connect, move, and unwind. These projects are often personal, high-visibility, and built with the community in mind, and that’s exactly how we approach them.

We work closely with cities, architects, and community stakeholders to bring shared spaces to life. We pay attention to what matters, accessibility, safety, long-term maintenance, and making the most of every dollar. Whether it’s playgrounds, splash pads, walking paths, or public pavilions, we build with care and purpose.

Our team knows how to manage logistics, coordinate public access, and keep things moving without disruption. We’re here to help you create a space that’s welcoming, sustainable, and ready to serve your community for years to come.

Other firms said it was impossible. We asked, “When can we start?”

The Gathering Place in Tulsa, Oklahoma was initially contracted to another firm. Nearing the end of demolition, the project was already $50 million over budget when the George Kaiser Family Foundation reached out to Crossland. Taking on a project of this scale and complexity was no small ask, but we were ready to step in and deliver.

Vision Alignment and Fresh Momentum

From our first meetings with the Foundation, it was clear they had a powerful vision—and we were confident we could help bring it to life. Our team visited the top-rated parks across the country to understand what makes them truly work. Then, we partnered closely with landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh and his team to course-correct and get the project back on track.

An Urban Oasis with Unmatched Detail

This 66.5-acre park includes six miles of pathways, two land bridges over Riverside Drive, and three timber bridges connecting key areas. Crossland constructed numerous buildings across the site, including a lodge and boathouse, installed innovative playground equipment, and helped shape a sprawling green space that redefines urban park design.

Battling the Elements and Beating the Clock

Site work was tied closely to weather patterns and river levels. Our crews worked around the clock, through every season, to maintain the aggressive schedule. At its peak, the jobsite saw between 150 and 500 workers daily, all pushing forward with shared focus and grit.

Leveraging Self-Perform to Regain Control

Crossland self-performed major scopes like the boathouse concrete, structural steel for the lodge, and supplemental sitework. When needed, our crews stepped in to support subcontractors, helping recover lost time and ensure quality was never compromised.

Driving Quality Through Collaboration

With nearly 100 subcontractors on-site across various phases, maintaining consistency was key. We reviewed mockups in partnership with the owner and architect to set expectations and prevent rework. By bringing in subs we had vetted before, we reduced risk and created smoother coordination across this ambitious, community-transforming project.

WOKA White Water Kayak Park

Watts, OK

Blasting Rock, Diverting a River, and Building Something Incredible

From 2020 to 2023, Crossland Construction took on one of its most exciting and complex projects yet — creating The Waters of Oklahoma and Arkansas (WOKA) Whitewater Park in Watts, Oklahoma. The task? Blast through limestone, divert part of the Illinois River, and build a world-class outdoor destination.

Designed for Adventure and Relaxation

WOKA is a $29.4 million whitewater park featuring a 1,200-foot-long, 100-foot-wide side channel off the Illinois River. The course includes eight drop features and delivers heart-pounding wave action for kayakers, surfers, and tubers of all skill levels. The project was made possible through support from the Walton Family Foundation and serves both thrill-seekers and those looking to enjoy the natural beauty of the Ozarks.

Complex Conditions, Creative Solutions

Bringing this vision to life required careful planning and coordination. From preconstruction to final completion, Crossland tackled significant challenges, including river diversion, limestone blasting, and whitewater feature creation. Protecting wildlife and wetlands was a top priority. Our team also had to mitigate flooding risks and perform key repairs on the Lake Frances Dam.

Innovative construction methods were central to success. Sculpted concrete, rubber-coated hydraulic gates, O-pile

systems, lidar mapping, and phased boulder placement were just a few of the tools used to shape the course. Repurposed rock from excavation work was used to build a “stair-step” dam to reduce hydraulic risks and eliminate dangerous currents.

Built Through Partnership

This project required close collaboration across multiple agencies and communities. Crossland coordinated with the Watts Police Department, the City of Siloam Springs, Adair County, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, and the Cherokee Tribe. Each partner played a key role in bringing this regional destination to life.

WOKA Whitewater Park is more than just a recreational facility. It is a tribute to what’s possible when innovation, coordination, and commitment to community come together.

The Crossland Difference: How Our Self Performance Capabilities Bring Value to Your Project.

We’re a hands-on builder— not just in how we lead, but in how we work. Our self-perform capabilities allow us to control critical scopes like concrete, steel, and earthwork, which helps keep your project on schedule, on budget, and built to a higher standard.

It’s not the right fit for every job, but when it is, it gives us the flexibility and field expertise to solve problems early, reduce risk, and add real value where it counts.

More predictable schedules & budgets

We’ve poured millions of square feet of concrete and hung thousands of tons of steel, with our own crews. That gives us tighter control of the schedule and allows for more accurate, confident budgeting from the start.

control over QUALITY, safety, and speed

We don’t leave critical scopes to chance. With in-house tradespeople on-site, we ensure the work is done right, safely, efficiently, and to spec, every time.

fewer delays, more solutions

If a subcontractor falls behind or drops out, we don’t wait. We step in with our own skilled teams to keep things moving and protect your schedule.

proactive problem solving

Our field crews and preconstruction team work together to identify risks before they hit the jobsite. From weather to logistics, we plan ahead, so you don’t have to play catch-up.

confidence when things get complex

We’ve built it all — from hospitals and heavy industrial to parks and schools. When challenges come up, we don’t flinch. We figure it out and get it done.

In loving memory of our founder, Ivan “Red Iron” Crossland, Sr.

We had a unique start— and we think it says a lot about who we are.

Ask anyone on our team what our founder, Ivan “Red Iron” Crossland, Sr., stood for, and you’ll hear the same things: family, honesty, and hard work.

Those values are still at the core of everything we do. They’re not just part of our story, they’re part of how we show up for clients, every single day.

our story about crossland

Our story began in 1977 in a garage, with a dream, a blueprint, and a whole lot of grit.

Ivan Crossland, Sr. started this company with his wife, ten kids at home, and a vision grounded in optimism, integrity, and action. That mindset carried him, and Crossland, through every challenge and milestone.

He built more than a business. He built a culture that still defines us today.

We’re still family-owned and operated. We’ve grown to four companies, 11 offices, 1,900+ team members, and we continue to rank among the top construction firms in the nation.

But our values and what matters most remain the same. If you dream big, stay humble, and do the work, great things are possible.
