INTRODUCTION June has crept up on us rather swiftly and it’s mind-boggling to think that we are heading towards the half way mark of the year and all that brings with it - lovely light evenings, the long school holidays and (hopefully) endless days of pleasant weather that should have us all breaking out our barbecues!

The approaching summer brings with it a whole host of events as groups hope to monopolise on the warmer weather, putting us all in good spirits and turning out in our droves to support them and their respective causes.

West Park is once again playing host to Goole’s annual Dog Show, organised by the local branch of the RSPCA. Now in its 11th year, the day is packed with fun for all the family, so grab your canine companions and pop along to see Goole’s proudest owners put their pooches on parade.

Make your way to the waterside for the final Sunday in June, as Goole’s Model Boat Club hold their biggest event of the year, the club’s open day. Based at the No.5 Boat Hoist on Dutch Riverside, the purpose built pond is perfectly situated to enjoy bird’s-eye views of the vessels sailing in and out of Goole. With a varied programme of things to do on the day, there’s never been a better excuse to go ‘messing about on the water’.

The wonderful Oakhill nature reserve has received a welcome cash injection, turn to our centre spread to find out how that will be utilised and see some of the stunning wildlife captured on camera at the tranquil haven.

All in all, there’s a lot to keep us busy this month, so get out and about and enjoy all that Goole has to offer!

Messing about on the water

A group of local model boat enthusiasts are preparing to welcome aboard a whole host of visitors to their annual open day on Sunday, June 26, 2016.

Goole Model Boat Club was founded back in 1997 by a small group of model boat fans and has since then seen its membership grow to around fifty members. Their main event of the year - the annual open day - is doubly important this year as some of the club’s facilities have been out of bounds due to scaffolding and contractors on site doing refurbishment works to one of Goole’s historic coal hoists.

The club is based at the No 5 Boat Hoist site on Dutch Riverside, where it enjoys a purpose built pond, sheltered area and a clubhouse, toilet facilities and a small workshop. Unfortunately the hoist repair works have meant that the club’s permanent facilities have been out of bounds and this has resulted in the temporary loss of their disabled toilet facilities.

However, everyone at the Club has their fingers crossed that work will be finished, scaffolding removed and everything back up and running as normal by their open day, on Sunday, June 26.

The site is part of the Waterways Museum and also houses a number of interesting historic structures. The most important is the last remaining, Grade II listed hydraulic boat-hoist, a structure of national importance.

Also on site are the last four remaining Bartholomew ‘compartment boats’, more commonly known as Tom Puddings.

Every Saturday afternoon (and most Wednesday’s) members can be found proudly sailing their boats - a variety of models ranging from yachts, tug, military and fun boats. Members come from as far as Leeds, Hull, Bridlington, York and Chesterfield to enjoy the facilities and as the site is secure members can sail any time of the day or night, every day of the year.

Perfectly situated in the middle of the docks, members can get really close to vessels sailing in and out of Goole, often enjoying a birds’s eye view of them discharging their various commodities.

The annual open day will feature displays from visiting local boating clubs, refreshments and hot food, raffles and prize stalls along with a duck race and ‘have-a-go’ boats for those wanting to try their skills on the water.

The fun starts at 10am and goes on all day until 4pm, so pop along and enjoy a tranquil day ‘messing about on the water’.

FROM A POLICE BMWs swiped in spate of high-end thefts This month Inspector Jo York of Goole Neighbourhood Policing Team highlights a recent spate of car crime to hit the area and reminds vehicle owner to be extra vigilant

E PERSPECTIVE: Police are warning car owners to be on their guard following a recent spate of high-end car thefts and damage to vehicles in Goole, Howden, Pocklington and Snaith.

A number of BMW cars have been stolen or damaged as a result of attempted break-ins in these areas. All the cars were secure, locked and either parked on driveways or outside the owner’s homes and appear to have been stolen overnight. All the stolen cars were taken without keys.

Police are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry regarding these crimes. Four persons are currently on police bail in connection with the offences and a warrant has also been executed at an address in Goole.

In recent weeks a number of secure transit vans parked on driveways in Goole have also been broken into and tools inside the vehicles stolen.

Several cars are also reported to have been scratched or damaged.

Humberside Police are deploying additional police patrols in these areas at relevant times overnight and have issued a warning to car owners to be extra vigilant, ensuring that all car and house doors and windows are securely locked. Please report any suspicious activity, people or vehicles to the police on the non emergency number 101 or 999 in an emergency, or if a crime is occurring.

Speaking about the issues the community policing teams have dealt with recently, Inspector Jo York told Our Goole: ‘Crime continues to remain relatively low in the area. During April, 133 crimes were reported in Goole. Twice as much crime occurs in the Goole South ward compared with the Goole North ward. This still only amounts to just approximately four and a half crimes per day. During April, only two of these were vehicle crimes, and the highest category remains violent crime.

Crimes in your area • An insecure bicycle was stolen from a garden in Rawcliffe Bridge • A parked car on the roadside in Goole has had its windscreen smashed • There was an attempted break in of a secure bungalow which caused damaged to a window and rear door • A parked car was scratched all down one side • A child’s bicycle and a child’s scooter was stolen from a rear garden • Entry was gained into a property via an insecure window and various items were stolen • A car windscreen was damaged • A vehicle was damaged as a result of an unknown person/s scratching the full length of the passenger side with a sharp object • Entry was gained into a garage and items stolen • An insecure bike left outside a shop was stolen and secure bike was stolen from a cycle rack

‘Unfortunately, during one night in early May, a number of vehicles were damaged by scratching on Charles Drive in Goole, and one on Woodland Avenue. On this occasion there were no lines of enquiry to pursue and this is purely an act of mindless vandalism, causing distress, expense and inconvenience to those car owners involved.

£432,000 won in Goole Goole & District Lottery has announced that a staggering 432 winners have received a lucky win with their numbers since it founded in 2008, which means a whopping £432,000 has been won in the local area by its members.

20% percentage of the funds made are used to provide grants of up to £250 to local community groups. These grants are available to voluntary and non-profit making groups, and since its inception have provided help to around 100 local organisations and charities, with around £28,000 been given between 2010-2016.

Lottery members have a chance of winning the £1,000 weekly jackpot prize from just £1 per week, with some scooping the cheque not just once, but twice or even three times!

At its peak the lottery had around 2,000 members but numbers have recently dwindled, which although bad news for the charitable aspect of the scheme does mean that the odds of winning are much higher than ever before. Helping Goole’s needy Every Friday evening a small Methodist Church in Goole opens its door to strangers, and provides a service so exceptional that it has been commended in the House of Commons.

Since 2010 the caring team of volunteers at Mission Trinity have provided a dropin service offering free meals, comfort, help and a welcoming shoulder to those sleeping rough, the vulnerable, people living in poor conditions or those who are simply struggling to make ends meet.

The founding members of Mission Trinity were a group of friends who originally intended to run a four-week soup kitchen for Goole’s homeless in the run up to Christmas. As word spread and the needy kept returning for their single weekly hot meal and drink somewhere warm, something more permanent began to take shape. Six years on, thanks to the generous donations from the people of Goole, anyone in need is welcomed with open arms.

The group work closely with local services, children’s centres, health visitors, citizens advice, social services and the YMCA amongst others and now run their ‘dropin’ every Friday evening from 5-8pm, offering a free meal and refreshments to those in need. A food bank service is also open on Wednesday’s (10am-12 noon) and Friday’s (3-5pm).

In a four year period alone, the team have served 3,863 meals, handed out 2,132 food parcels and welcomed 5,501 to their Friday night sessions, a feat which scooped them the ERYC’s Chairman’s Award for Community Groups in 2015.

Speaking to Our Goole, Dave Sample, administrator and co-founder praised the support the group received from the people of Goole to help them continue: ‘The people that give to us help us give to others.

‘Sometimes people may only want a drink and a shelter

from the weather, others may welcome something warm to eat. The evenings can be very busy. We have seen up to fifty people share a meal. We also hand out Food Bags, containing essentials that can see someone through a week.’

Mission Trinity work closely with Goole’s Morrisons, Greggs and Tesco, making use of their otherwise waste food to help Goole’s most vulnerable and in need.

‘The staff are fantastic and have quietly helped out, now we have an opportunity to thank them. Great work.’

‘All this could not have been done without the support of the community of Goole and local businesses who have helped. We are eternally grateful.’

A well-known local convenience store and fuel supplier is pushing the envelope when it comes to produce, and offering such a diverse range of items that you would be forgiven for thinking you were in a speciality grocery store.

Established in 1930 under the trading name J Wardle & Son Ltd, the business has been serving customers for 86 years from the Boothferry Road site.

The huge range of products on offer in the store, situated on the fringes of Howden, reflect a very different feel than that found in your average filling station store, which typically sells sweets, air-filled pasties, slightly flat pop and limp looking pre-packed sandwiches - at hugely inflated prices!

A trip to Wardles then, will leave you somewhat stunned.

Manager Ian Beaumont has taken the shop in a very different direction and his range of hand-picked produce has turned the small shop on the side of the forecourt into something of a haven for the connoisseur. If you’re looking for something a little bit different - something with a more speciality feel - then you are in the right place. Ian has decided not to opt for the bog-standard ‘mass produced, mini market’ approach and has adopted a much more ‘select’ strategy. The majority of the items you will find on the well-stocked shelves have all been individually hand-picked.

A champion of keeping business local, Ian sources as much of his produce as possible from local suppliers and businesses. The fresh milk is from a dairy in Hook, the delicious range of hand-made, artisan pies are from award-winning local butcher Mounfield’s in Bubwith.

The majority of the stock on the shelves is Yorkshire grown or produced and even the hot drinks and

refreshments are supplied from a firm just up the road in Selby.

Twice per week the store takes delivery of a huge batch of freshly-baked, specialist Scotch eggs and sausage rolls - including a black pudding variety, Ploughman’s Scotch eggs and the infamous ‘Old Fart’ sausage roll, complete with beans. An avid wine collector, Ian utilises the services of a high-class wine merchant and broker from Corney & Barrow [suppliers to the Royal family and the sole UK agent for the import of exclusive wines from France] to stock his shelves.

With fuel prices on the rise motorists drive that extra mile to save money on their fuel, but don’t realise that they are forking out unnecessarily high prices for the ‘little extras’ they then pick up in store. As an independent fuel buyer and supplier, J Wardle & Son Ltd do not have the buying power of the multi-nationals allowing them to shave pennies of the price per litre of petrol. But they do have the advantage of independence when it comes to stock, value and prices in-store - and it shows! Energy drinks for example are more than a pound cheaper per can than elsewhere, so there are huge differences in price at the till.

The choice range of products and produce, fine foods, handmade pies and delicacies alongside the wide range of everyday groceries and highclass wines simply cannot be rivalled on price for miles around.

goole sees the light A new UVB light therapy service for dermatology patients has been launched at Goole and District Hospital.

The new facility means patients will no longer have to travel further afield to hospitals in Scunthorpe, Hull, Selby and Doncaster to access phototherapy light treatment.

UVB therapy, also known as TL01 therapy, is used for a number of skin disorders, including psoriasis and eczema.

For treatment the patient stands in a special cabinet to receive exposure to ultra-violet light. Treatment may last from a few seconds, building up gradually with each visit to about 15 minutes. A course of treatment usually involved attending the hospital two or three times a week for up to ten weeks.

Oakhill Nature and Wildlife Reserve is a beautiful landscape of green glades, woodland and water sitting on the outskirts of Goole and thanks to a group of dedicated volunteers, has ‘returned to nature’ and become a tranquil haven for wildlife.

Thanks to a successful funding bid the Friends of Oakhill, who maintain the site in partnership with the ERYC, have received a welcome cash injection to help promote awareness of the reserve and protect the area for future generations.

Friends of Oakhill is a charity formed in 2005 as a public interest group, run entirely by volunteers who help support and carry out important conservation works around the site. They have recently been awarded £2,700 from the Goole Field Community Wind Farm Fund, a community ‘cash pot’ contributed by the wind farm developer and set aside to benefit and support communities that neighbour its sites, helping to develop community inspired projects.

The successful funding bid has come at a vital time in the reserve’s history, as the construction of a nearby link road has hampered access to the site and raised fears that visitor numbers would dwindle.

Volunteer Matthew Cox told Our Goole: ‘The Friends of Oakhill have been awarded £2,700 from the Goole Fields Community Wind Farm Fund for their ‘From Tiny Acorns’ project. This project aims to grow

awareness of the reserve and build the skills of local people to manage and protect the area for years and generations to come, enhancing knowledge of the many special species which are found there.

‘The group have been working hard, despite previous access issues to the Oakhill site caused by the development of the new Tom Pudding Way, and are thrilled to have secured these funds to further their ambitions. It will enable us to introduce more people to the site, through improving access arrangements for all and providing a year round calendar of events for all ages and interests.

‘It’s been a difficult season. We have managed to continue our habitat management work on the reserve through the autumn and winter months, and have been working closely with the contractors in an effort to maintain site access for the public. The construction of the new link road has not been without problems in terms of our access to the site. Hopefully now we have an established temporary access point with a small temporary car park off the Tom Pudding Way, locals and visitors from further afield will be able to start enjoying Oakhill unhindered once again. ‘This funding will help us move forward in achieving our goals - bringing more people onto the site and letting them experience the wonderful wildlife it has to offer.’

Volunteers are always welcomed to help with conservation days and donations can be made at any time. For membership of the group a donation of £6 for an individual or £10 for a family group is suggested.

‘Amazing Children’ from goole honoured at award ceremony

An extraordinary group of children from Goole have been treated to their very own ‘Oscars’ and enjoyed the party of a lifetime, giving them a boost for all their hard work and determination.

Goole’s Fun Run played host to a group of twelve young ‘nominees’ each bringing five friends along to help them celebrate their success. The community celebration was a ‘thank you’ party for some of Goole’s most deserving youngsters, all put forward for their awards by family and friends.

Fun Run are appealing for donations to help them make improvements to their sensory room, allowing them to provide free of charge sensory sessions for adults, children and families with additional needs. If you can help please contact Beth on 07809 745607.

Local businesses, parents and the community stepped in with donations to ensure that even the mums didn’t go home empty handed, with meal vouchers, photo shoots and spar treatments handed out. Top 10 tips for getting paid as a small business

Cashflow is a problem for many small businesses and it is one of the main points that new clients will raise with me and the team at Hemingway Bailey.

1. Research your prospective customer. Do credit checks for the larger value ones and ask your peers about them if it is a business customer.

Figures from the FSB say that in the last 12 months, 73% of members had suffered from late payment from customers & that 23% had to write off invoices.

A Goole mum is seeking support from Our Goole readers as she prepares to take part in a vital fundraising event to raise awareness for charities which helped support her poorly daughter through a rare illness.

coping with a smile Liberty Siddle is just six-months old and was born with a rare congenital disorder that affects just 1 in 3,500 babies - Tracheo-Oesophageal Fistula and Oesopageal Atresia (TOF/OA). This basically means her oesophagus had not developed properly and she required immediate neonatal surgery at just one-day-old.

Mum Tracy Brennan of Fountayne Street, shared with Our Goole the struggle the family have endured to stay strong and positive as their baby girl faces her life-long battle. At two-weeks-old more problems surfaced and Liberty was rushed into emergency surgery, during which one of her lungs collapsed. With a chest drain inserted and hooked up to a mass of wires and tubes, things looked pretty bleak.

There is no cure for Liberty’s condition, and over the next five weeks she endured repeated, complex investigations and surgeries. During one such procedure, a separate congenital abnormality was discovered - an oesophageal stenosis, which is a narrowing below the original surgery site. This condition only affects one in 20,000 babies, so the combination of all three conditions is extremely rare.

Life became a rollercoaster for the family with more emergency surgeries over the coming months, and they now ‘live life one day at a time’ and are very aware that what the future holds for Liberty is unknown.

Parents Tracy and Sven know that for their daughter to have the best possible care throughout her life they will need lots of help and support from hospitals, specialists, doctors and support networks. Determined to give something back to the hospital, charities and trusts that have played such an important part of Liberty’s life so far, Tracy rounded up a group of eight friends and formed ‘Liberty’s Belles’. On June 25 they will be taking part in the 5km ‘Color Obstable Rush’ in

Sheffield to raise awareness of and vital funds for the three main bodies that have helped Liberty so far: • The Children’s Hospital Charity which supplies lifesaving equipment and funds vital research at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where Liberty has spent a large portion of her life.

• The Sick Children’s Trust, a charity who provide accommodation for parents of seriously ill children in hospital.

• TOFS, a registered charity dedicated to providing support to families of children born with rare congenital conditions like Liberty’s.

With no cure for her condition, Liberty will require repeated surgery, investigations and appointments for the rest of her life, and her next visit to the operating theatre is due within a month.

Yet the poorly youngster has a beautiful, beaming smile, and whilst having to be fed via a naogastric tube, she is a very happy little girl who lights up the room. Brother Rufus (5) and sister Xenia (10) lavish her with affection, and Tracy told Our Goole: ‘Whilst the last six months have been a rollercoaster for Sven & I, we couldn’t be prouder of our beautiful baby girl, she truly is a miracle and such a ray of sunshine who we love dearly.’

A popular local tattoo studio has become one of the first in the East Riding to be awarded top marks in a new hygiene scheme designed to drive up standards.

Fired Up Tattoo! and Laser Studio in Snaith has been awarded the rating “very good” in the scheme, which is administered by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

Husband and wife team Rich and Lisa Suddaby opened their studio two years ago, after moving into the area from York. Rich uses his sharp artistic talent to take care of design, tattooing and lasing for his client base, whilst Lisa performs the body piercing.

The talented duo were approached to take part in the scheme by the ERYC, who contacted every tattoo studio in the county to get them on board in a bid to drive up standards within the industry, and to give the public reassurance and confidence when choosing which studio to use.

The scheme was launched towards the end of last year and is similar to the Food Standards Agency scores on the doors scheme used by restaurants and takeaways, with ratings based on hygiene and cleanliness standards.

Continually striving for excellence, it was too good an opportunity to miss and Fired Up took on the challenge and prepared to prove just how good they are.

Their determination paid off when they were awarded the highest score possible to achieve - one of only two studios in the entire East Riding to do so.

Speaking about their admirable achievement, Rich told Our Goole: ‘I have always been a keen artist and loved drawing ever since I can remember. Making the move into tattooing was a natural transition really, and when we were approached to take part in this rating scheme we simply had to take the challenge on.

‘We thought it would be an excellent opportunity to improve on ourselves. Apart from one tattoo studio in Bridlington, we are the only other studio in the whole of the East Riding that achieved the top award of 4 stars, which we are very proud of!

‘We also recently got passed out by the British Medical Laser Association for our Laser Removal.

‘We chose to come to Snaith as it is such a pretty little market town and things have taken off fantastically, better than we could ever have hoped!’

Rich and Lisa have been presented with a certificate and a sticker which they will be proudly displaying in their studio, giving the public first-class reassurance that their premises have excellent hygiene standards.

SPORTSNEWS ‘Carol’s day’ raises £1,258 Family, friends and lots of football fans turned out in their droves to show their support at a charity memorial day held in memory of a Goole mum and grandma, who sadly lost her brave battle with cancer last September.

Tracey Baxter, from Goole organised a bank-holiday, action packed day of football matches in memory of her much loved mum Carol Martin, with all proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer Support to thank them for the outstanding care and support they gave Carol and her family throughout her illness.

The Victoria Pleasure Grounds in Goole played host to a series of matches and two of Carol’s grandsons, Joe (20) and Jamie (13) captained their respective football teams in memory of their ‘nana’. Carol’s third grandson, twelve-year-old Ben also bravely faced the chop as the fearless youngster lost his hair in a sponsored ‘brave the shave’.

The fun-filled day included a raffle, and a overall total of £1,258 was raised.

Well done all!

Six-A-Side teams on the ball for two great causes A Goole man and charity committee from Tesco Distribution Centre are organising a Six-A-Side football tournament featuring twenty local teams to help raise money for good causes.

Tesco Distribution Centre team manager and on-site charity champion Matty Rockett (32) is gearing up the teams for the big day on Sunday, July 31 at Goole Cricket Club from 10am until late.

It’s the third year the cricket club have hosted the annual event and Matty’s employers have sponsored the day, with a whopping £1,000 up for grabs to the winning team.

Teams taking part, such as Swinefleet, who have just scooped the Goole and Thorne Cup, NUR who have recently taken the Sunday League Cup title, and North Ferriby who have not only just won the league but also been promoted, will be going head-to-head with teams from the Tesco Network such as Hemsworth, Sheffield Extra and Hull St. Stephen’s, alongside teams of local lads who simply want to do their bit for charity and enjoy the ‘beautiful game’.

Tesco are in a charity partnership with Diabetes UK and British Heart Foundation, so all the money raised on the day will go to these fantastic causes.

There will be something for everyone on the sidelines, so bring along the whole family and enjoy. The action-packed day will include a fun fair, bouncy castles, face painting, a visit from a fire engine for the children, lots of stalls and even a chance to have a picture taken with Olaf and a Minion!

To ensure all the funds raised on the day go straight to their intended good causes, Matty has set up a crowdfunding page to help cover the costs of the day such as getting the pitch marked, coverage from St John Ambulance and even the cost of the match balls. Any small donation which would contribute towards these costs would mean all money raised on the day goes straight to charity.
