With summer in full swing, many of us are looking forward to concerts, festivals, and sports events. However, Scunthorpe Police talks to us about how alongside the excitement of securing tickets comes the rising risk of fraud
Fraudsters frequently target eager buyers, exploiting popular events and leaving fans out of pocket. Staying alert and making informed choices can help ensure fraudsters don’t ruin your plans.
According to Action Fraud, ticket fraud surged in 2024, with nationwide losses rising nearly 50% from the previous year, reaching approximately £9.7million. In Humberside alone, residents reported total losses of £80,153, underlining the serious impact of this crime on local communities.
Fraudsters use increasingly sophisticated tactics to deceive buyers. Inspector Mark Hawley from the Economic Crime Unit highlighted some common methods and shared important advice to help you minimise the risk of falling victim to fraudsters: “Fraudsters often exploit the excitement surrounding popular events, using platforms like social media to target unsuspecting victims. These fraudsters are highly skilled at making fake tickets appear legitimate, leaving people out of pocket and without entry to the events
they were looking forward to.
“My advice is simple, only buy tickets from trusted sources. Whether it’s an official promoter, the venue’s box office, or a reputable ticket exchange site, ensuring authenticity is key. Be cautious if someone insists on payment via bank transfer, this is often a sign of fraud.
Using a credit card offers an extra layer of protection.
‘’Ticket fraud is not only becoming more common but also increasingly sophisticated. While fraudsters often lure victims with promises of great deals on social media or through unsolicited messages, they may also use convincing fake websites or ads that mimic legitimate platforms.’’
If you believe you’ve been a victim of fraud please report it through Action Fraud or call 0300 123 2040. You can also report fraud through our website https://ow.ly/ Wbtz50VLakg or by calling the non-emergency 101 line.
To report anonymously, contact Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.

Keep your diary free on Saturday 23rd August for a day of promoting diversity, acceptance and bringing the local community together
Scunthorpe Pride started from nothing - it had no experience in organising a festival and very little money in the bank but they pulled it off. In 2023 they had 3,000 visitors and in 2024 they had a massive 10,000 people through the gates. This year they were granted charity status.
The whole event is free, no tickets required. The main event will run from 12pm until 7pm at Church Square, with hopes of another on-foot town-centre parade before the gates open to the main event.
In 2024 they brought 90’s dance legends Kelly Llorenna and Ian Van Dahl to the main stage and this year they are shining a light on upcoming talent within our LGBTQ+ community and local community.
There will be a large main stage in Church Square, a licensed bar, live music and entertainers, free activities, lots of food options and the popular Pride market.
They have a whole host of different artists performing with some returning favourites. They have just started to announce their line-up for this year so if you want to keep up to date with the releases you can follow Scunthorpe Pride on Facebook or visit www. scunthorpepride.co.uk.
They have already got plenty of drag, pop, punk and even some rap. This year is new territory for them as they have now taken the leap to move the event to a Saturday. This means more people can access the event via public transport and the footfall could potentially increase again.
The Pride market will be open for business with local charities, organisations and sellers. There will be a food court with all your favourites and some new additions. The 20:21 Visual Arts Centre and Scunthorpe Central Library are onboard again so they will be providing some great family friendly activities, games and crafts.
Leanne from Scunthorpe Pride Board Team told Scunthorpe Journal: “The board is made up of four volunteers, Abi, Beckie, Charlie and myself. We look
after all aspects of the event and even though the festival is just one day, it takes us a whole year to plan, from organising fundraisers, planning layout, sourcing acts and activities, booking equipment etc. I’m responsible for creating the line-up, running order and I do all of the social media, PR and promotion for the festival. I’ve been with the team since the beginning and I’ve been running LGBTQ+ events on and off for a number of years.
“In a world with so much hate and misunderstanding, local Pride events bring light and love and remind people how far we’ve come but how far there is still to go. They show people that it’s OK to be you and that people do care.
“Having Pride in Scunthorpe is progress, for years our community have had nothing, it can be very lonely at times for our LGBTQ+ community and can feel like the whole world is against us and the only place to find other like-minded people would have been out of town in the bigger cities. Our event allows people to meet, make friends, build connections, feel safe and be happy being themselves right on their doorstep, without having to travel elsewhere. It brings tourism to our town and supports local businesses in the area, from the bars, shops and hotels to the Pride market stall holders and beyond.”

Schoolreaders are on the search for volunteers to listen to children read one-to-one, giving children valuable time with an adult who is not a teacher or parent, and inspiring them to find a love of reading
Schoolreaders was founded in 2013 by Jane Whitbread. The charity was established with the mission of improving children’s literacy by offering one-to-one reading support to primary school pupils who needed extra help, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Since its launch, Schoolreaders has grown rapidly and now operates in every county in England. Schoolreaders volunteers currently support over 30,000 children per week in over 1,500 primary schools.
What does Schoolreaders offer as a charity?
Schoolreaders matches volunteers to local primary schools - focusing on schools with the greatest need - giving one-to-one reading sessions.
How can volunteering help the local community?
By contributing time to help local children, volunteering with Schoolreaders can create stronger community bonds and volunteers often become role models for the children they assist. In
addition to offering much-needed reading support for children within schools, volunteering can help to combat isolation and loneliness amongst the local community and our volunteers tell us their visits to schools are often the highlight of their week.
What are the benefits of volunteering with Schoolreaders?
Just 10 minutes a week with one of our volunteers has been shown to improve children’s reading fluency, comprehension and enjoyment. It also gives them valuable time with an adult who is not a teacher or parent which aids their social skills.
Reading with one of our volunteers can help children build confidence in their reading abilities, which can lead to better academic performance and greater opportunities in the future.
How can people volunteer?
The commitment is just one hour a week during term time for a year. Volunteers can find out more and apply via the website at www.schoolreaders.org
