Lions Fun & Sports Day 2025

Thorne Rural Lions hosts this annual event for people with disabilities, and this event will take place on Saturday 16th August from 11am at Parklands Sports & Social Club, Wheatley Hall Road, Doncaster

Thorne Rural Lions has been established for 55 years and is part of the biggest humanitarian group in the world.

They carry out various fundraising to help the community with all money raised going back into the community. Events range from coffee mornings, race nights and midsummer walks, which has benefitted a different charity every year. This year’s funding goes to the children’s ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

All contestants receive a medal for taking part with over 50 trophies presented on the day.

There will be up to 15 Lions Clubs from all over, as well as local, with a variety of games including

splat the rat, wellie wanging, hoop games and stocks where you can throw wet sponges at volunteers. There is also a five-a-side football tournament.

All contestants receive a free burger and chips or hot dog and chips, drink and a ice cream. These are just for people with disabilities. Anyone who accompanies will have to pay for their food and drink.

So, if this is something that you would like to attend, you can pre-register on the Lions Fun & Sports Day website: www.lionsfunandsports. co.uk or just go along on the day from 11am till 4pm.

Local charity recognised as finalists in two prestigious national awards

Little Rainbows is a registered, parent-led charity founded in January 2025 by a group of dedicated SEN parents in Doncaster who wanted to see more meaningful support for autistic children and families in the local area

Run entirely by parents of autistic children, they bring powerful lived experience to everything they do. They understand firsthand the challenges families face and they are here to walk alongside them every step of the way.

Their mission is to reduce isolation among autistic and SEND families, create safe, inclusive spaces where children can thrive, and support parents in navigating the often complex SEND system.

At the heart of Little Rainbows is the belief that parents are the most powerful advocates for their children. They are passionate about championing neurodiversity, breaking down barriers, and building a world where all children are seen, supported, and celebrated - just as they are.

The two awards Little Rainbows are up for are:

The National Learning Disabilities & Autism Awards 2025 in the ‘Making a Difference Award’ category, recognising

organisations that have gone above and beyond to improve the lives of autistic individuals and those with learning disabilities.

The National Diversity Awards 2025 in the category of ‘Community Organisation Award for Disability’ where they were selected from over 85,000 nominations across the UK.

Being recognised at this level, just six months after launching, is a huge milestone for their team and community.

Little Rainbows have a number of community events, fundraising activities, and awareness campaigns in the pipeline so keep an eye on their social media pages for updates:
