EX CULTU ROBUR Cranleigh was established in 1865 in Surrey, UK, with the motto: Ex Cultu Robur: From Culture Comes Strength. It is an ethos which we also live by at Cranleigh Abu Dhabi and emphasises the central importance of a broad, cultural, holistic education to ensure young people are equipped to shape successful futures and lead fulfilled lives.

Ex Cultu Robur is an ethos that is founded upon our core belief in the existence of a holistic education. The strength of this motto for real world preparation, is perhaps now more important for young people than ever before.

Education has been described as a ‘conversation between generations’, and schools are where these ‘conversations’ take place. Cranleigh has been educating pupils for over 150 years, so there have been generations of ‘conversations.’ Over that time a unique ethos has been developed. Ex Cultu Robur: From Culture Comes Strength is an ethos that is founded upon our core belief in the importance of a holistic education, that places the school at the heart of the community, and that is based heavily on the relationship between its pupils and teachers.

When we were planning the development of Cranleigh Abu Dhabi we showed His Excellency Mubarak al Muhairi and His Excellency Saeed al Hajeri around the school in the UK. When they had finished their visit, they told us emphatically that whatever we did in the Middle East must reflect the deepest essence of Cranleigh UK. “Capture that atmosphere in a bottle.” I thought about how we could do that, and it was then that I realised what culture actually is. It is the sense of belonging, a common purpose, an appreciation of place and feeling. The idea was not to identically replicate Cranleigh UK as a blueprint but translate the spirit and ethos into the Abu Dhabi community. To draw on 150 years’ worth of educational experience and infuse it with Middle Eastern culture and create something truly unique for the region. From the outset, Ex Cultu Robur seemed to resonate with Saadiyat Island and its cultural identity.

Cranleigh has never been simply about academic success but about nurturing young people who are genuine all-rounders, who want to try everything and do it all to the best of their ability. We believe feeling valued within various spheres impacts positively on grades, and results in confident, open-minded individuals who leave school with lifelong friends and bright prospects. Therefore, inclusive of our skills-based curriculum, our day is built around a strong academic timetable that also prioritises time for sports, music, drama and the creative arts, enabling every child’s talent to flourish. The School’s advantageous location within the cultural heart of Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Island, greatly facilitates these objectives.

If our young people are going to lead and shape a successful future, then their education must equip them. It must help them to find a sense of identity and what it is to be a good person. They need to understand and value their culture and to have a developed sense of purpose. It is why we must continue to champion an education which is broad and holistic, and one that is as much to do with the development of societal contribution as it is knowledge.

Over the years Cranleigh has strengthened this core ethos of Ex Cultu Robur. The aims are to provide young people with the strength to succeed; the wisdom to make informed choices; resilience in the face of failure or difficulty; and the insight to recognise their privilege and to shape the future culture of the world through lives of service and leadership.

MEET THE NEW

HEAD OF PREP

ADAM GIBSON Cranleigh is delighted to welcome Adam Gibson as the new Head of the Prep School.

Adam comes from Wellington Prep School in the UK where he was Headmaster for 10 years. Educated at Southampton, Loughborough and Cambridge Universities, Adam worked in the UK and Australia before joining the teaching profession in his late twenties. He is married to Amanda and is father to Joel (21 years) and Isabella (16 years).

What has brought you to Cranleigh Abu Dhabi?

I was Head of my previous school for 10 years and we as a team achieved a great deal. I could have stayed and been comfortable, but I don’t do bored. Cranleigh is a school with an ethos I thought I could champion, where the qualities of community, strong relationships and an all-round education are fundamental.

Important as they are, it is not just about results.

Why did you become a teacher?

When I left university for the first time, I knew I didn’t want to be a teacher. However, life had other plans! Having tried various other professions – from marketing to IT systems development – I hadn’t found anything that really inspired me, until a friend suggested I spend a day in his school. It literally changed my life as I discovered a profession that inspires and energises me every day.

What is your vision for the Prep School?

To provide the opportunity, the inspiration and the energy for every child to believe they can change the world. I appreciate that this is a huge ambition, but as a world-class School, we must have world-class aspirations for our children. To do this requires the best possible team of teachers, strong and committed partnerships with parents, and helping each child to discover their strengths and passions.

What qualities would you like every child to leave the Prep School with? How do you ensure you attain that?

This answer is simple: the qualities of a Cranleighan.

These are the qualities that will help our children navigate their futures with kindness, imagination, curiosity and a sense of purposeful belief. To attain this, we need to ensure that every child has high expectations of themselves and is able to see the opportunity for growth from making mistakes. Each child needs to be nurtured and to recognise they are known and valued in our School, because then they have the reassurance of a safety net when they take risks. Finally, it’s embedding the message that real improvement isn’t about being better than someone else but being better than you were yesterday. We are all on a journey.

What is your take on the skills needed for futureready students?

As this year has proven, we are facing unprecedented challenges. But at the same time, I believe these challenges are providing us with a myriad of new opportunities. At Cranleigh, we want to teach our children to be independent thinkers, problem solvers, how to cope with failure and rejection and how to move forward in the face of adversity. Mr. Wilson recently referred to our pupils as people who would be ‘gap finders’ in their careers, and this resonates with me. I will always encourage children to take risks and to not be afraid of making mistakes because so often in life, the people who make an impact on the world are those with the courage and imagination to do things differently.

How do you spend your spare time?

I relax by being active. Before becoming a Head, I was a reasonably competitive triathlete and was fortunate to represent Great Britain as an age group athlete. In 2015 I completed my first Ironman distance triathlon, and I continue to cycle and run.

My friends. I am very fortunate to count many of my school peers as my closest friends today.

I enjoy watching all school sport.

However, I love the power of music in schools. School concerts give me a great reason to pause my working week and simply stop, listen and enjoy our childrens’ incredible expertise.

If you could take your pupils on a field trip to anywhere in the world, where would you take them?

If we could do anything, it would probably be to explore the oceans in a submarine…or maybe the Grand Canyon in a helicopter…or maybe the top of Mount Everest…or maybe the North and South Poles…or maybe we would have a vote!

BBC Sounds – the power of radio! Also, being new to Abu Dhabi, Google Maps is also used a great deal.

I always wanted to be a vet. However, in my teens I discovered that I was allergic to animals!

Cranleigh Abu Dhabi Ranked in the Top 100 Private Schools Global List

Cranleigh was named among the best 100 private schools in the world according to Spear’s Schools Index 2020. These rankings are based on academic results, preparation for university and how well pupils are equipped for life beyond academia. The index, which is broken down by region, covers almost every continent in the world. Cranleigh was also included on the list of the top five schools in the Middle East.

Jane Goodall Roots & Shoots Award

The School won Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Award for Environmental, Charity and Wellbeing initiatives.

Wellbeing Award for Schools UK

Cranleigh received the Wellbeing Award for Schools accredited by Optimus Education and The National Children’s Bureau in the UK.

Excellence in Pupil Development Award UK

Cranleigh received the EPDA accredited by Optimus Education.

GESS Education Awards 2020

Cranleigh won two GESS Education Awards given for excellence in the education industry.

Michael Wilson, Principal, was awarded the prestigious GESS Judges Commendation Award and teacher Philippa Wraithmell, Head of Digital Learning, won the Innovation in Education prize.

ADEK Inspections, Distance Learning 2019/20

Cranleigh received the highest rating of ‘Developed’ from the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), for our Distance Learning provision.

Cranleigh Abu Dhabi Inspection Report in Overall Effectiveness was rated ‘Outstanding.’

Teaching Assistant CACHE Certification

In September 2019, the Cranleigh Abu Dhabi Training Centre was opened. The aim is to train all our Teaching Assistants in Pre-Prep and across the School to become fully qualified in Supporting Teaching and Learning with an internationally recognised CACHE Level 3 qualification. We are the only school in Abu Dhabi to be approved by NCFE and one of a very few in the UAE.

CREATING A CULTURE OF WELLBEING

We measure ourselves against international standards and benchmarking, ultimately ensuring the best outcomes for all our stakeholders. This year Cranleigh received the Wellbeing Award for Schools accredited by Optimus Education and The National Children’s Bureau in the UK.

At Cranleigh, we want to establish and embed a culture that regards mental health and wellbeing as the responsibility of all. This includes our three stakeholders: pupils, parents and teachers. Each one is intrinsically linked as to ensure success and longevity, all values need to be woven into the strategic vision, mission and behavioural structure of the School.

The Programme in Practice Since the School’s inception seven years ago, we have focused on wellbeing and positive mental health in our behavioural systems, policies, structure of the day, routines and rewards process. Over time our wellbeing journey has evolved into three main areas: Head, Heart and Hand.

The Head represents mental health including equipping our School Community with tools and strategies to support themselves and others. We do this through dedicated days for mental health, kindness and wellbeing which are celebrated through tailored activities and guest speakers, engaging all pupils, parents and staff; The younger years take on the responsibilities of Pre-Prep Listeners, Pre-Prep Voice and Wellbeing Warriors; We have our own wellbeing framework that overlays the ‘standard’ curriculum, specific to each Year group. This includes further support for our older pupils on sensitive topics such as relationship skills and responsible decision-making.

The Heart represents the environment and sustainability. At a time of global uncertainty, it is essential for young people to be outward-looking, open-minded, and to have an understanding of other cultures. In all Years, global awareness and environmental sustainability are high on the agenda.

Summit. Pupils discuss ideas and implement change in the School Community to ensure we are kinder to our environment. This could be as small as picking up litter, to protecting the turtles on Saadiyat beach.

The Hand represents charity and outreach. As a school, kindness, tolerance and compassion underpins so much of what we do. Through many student-led projects and Cranleigh’s Charity Committee, pupils have spearheaded initiatives for our cleaning and facilities staff. Our aim is for our pupils to impact the world purposefully with passion, grit and gusto, whilst learning the importance of kindness, charity and wellbeing.

It is crucial that we teach our children that true wellbeing starts with self-care. They also need to understand the positive impact we can have on the world and others.

Our wellbeing journey is an evolving one and will continue to grow. We need to ensure that we have the pupils, parents and teachers at the heart of everything we do. Only then can wellbeing become part of the DNA and fabric of the School.

Recent months have been an extraordinary chapter for education. Remote learning has challenged us to see the delivery of schooling with a new approach. We take a look at some of the revisions and creative solutions that have been adopted, and what we learned along the way.

New Curriculum Conversations Whilst it has been challenging to deliver an all-round curriculum in this unique way, it has certainly created interesting discussions on how to embed some of the current practices into future curriculum models.

The ability to engage with pupils remotely creates opportunities to look at how we roll-out certain elements of our curriculum in a more streamlined manner focusing on improving outcomes without compromising quality.

Enhanced Digital Literacy Digital literacy of both pupils and staff has progressed rapidly. Creativity and ingenuity were evident in our teachers’ approach as was the enthusiasm to keep the learning varied and enjoyable. The way in which pupils and teachers have been able to communicate in a differing medium is something that we wish to retain as it clearly adds to the more traditional teaching context.

The Role of Teachers Inevitably, while some pupils have thrived during remote learning others have found the absence of the classroom environment more difficult. Remote learning has reinforced the significance of the teacher in the learning process. It is clear content can be effectively delivered in an online setting, learning is a social activity and face-to-face teaching provides a richer experience for both pupils and teachers.

Maintaining Engagement We have a robust tracking and monitoring system which measures attendance and engagement.

Wellbeing surveys and parental feedback has proven invaluable in shaping our approach. One of the key lessons learned is that we needed to increase the number of live lessons. We therefore opted to have 100 percent of timetabled lessons live, for pupils that were not returning to school. In addition, the continuation of online assemblies, sports sessions, House events, choir and orchestra practices and even coffee mornings for parents has kept the regular rhythms of school life active. This has significantly improved engagement and the quality of experience pupils receive.

The Importance of a Strong School Culture The systems and processes that underpinned our move to distance learning and our strong School culture within which to situate and embed these new methods, has proven to be a solid foundation. The resilience and independence that we have seen in our pupils has been outstanding. Credit goes to them for infusing our School Community with a spirit of determination and strength of character.

The Long View From an academic stance, we are planning to ensure this period does not disrupt pupil progress. For some Year groups this means altering what we do over the next 2 to 3 years. We will continue to adapt, tweak and embrace good ideas. Our priority on returning to School under normal conditions will be pupil wellbeing and confidence plus the creation of opportunities for students to explore topics in greater depth and in a more collaborative setting.

UAE NATIONAL DAY 20 / T H E

The 2019 UAE National Day celebration was a festival full of rich cultural heritage, traditional dance, food and music.

The event marked the 48th year since 2nd December 1971 when the seven Emirates were united under the vision and leadership of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Our pupil-led assembly opened the festivities with poems, dance, The Oath of Allegiance and speeches focusing on the Year of Tolerance and the indigenous UAE Ghaf tree. The assembly concluded with Mr. Wilson speaking about the importance of setting pledges to celebrate National Day. The day offered warm hospitality and aromatic foods, with barasti stalls displaying traditional handicrafts and Arabic dishes. The beautiful grounds of the School played host as the whole Cranleigh Community was welcomed to enjoy lunch on the field.

The afternoon also gave the opportunity to celebrate time honoured traditions such as Arabic calligraphy and henna, and to learn about the importance of pearling, camels, Arabian horses and falconry. A special day spent celebrating the UAE’s history and togetherness for all involved.

International Day at Cranleigh is the celebration of countries and cultures that make up our fantastic international community.

On 6th February 2020, flags from over 70 countries flew proudly over the field while staff, children, family and friends came together in a carnival of colour, food and fun.

As always, our incredible parents excelled in their preparation; a labyrinth of stalls representing different countries covered the field, brightly decorated in their national colours. A wonderful selection of food from around the globe cascaded over the bench-top displays where every flavour was available for tasting.

A highlight this year was the Indian stall with bracelet making, small gifts for visitors, fragrant food and a cushioned area offering a relaxing place to socialise.

Once again, our student-led Charity Committee hosted a stall for our Cranleigh support staff. This was a chance to give back to those who help us on a daily basis. Simply Bottles, a plastic bottle recycling initiative was also set up to keep our environmental footprint light.

The afternoon was spent enjoying games, face painting, jumping on bouncy castles and pupils showcasing their talents through an array of live musical performances. A true Cranleigh connection highlighting the beautiful diversity and bond of our community.

To empower our pupils, the majority of these enrichment days are student-led and have a strong commonality; they provide a sense of community and purpose, the space for thoughtful reflection plus the opportunity for collaborative discussion and unified action. We wholeheartedly believe that everyone should have a voice to make a change.

We want to educate our community in a very visible way about our three areas of wellbeing: Head (Mental Health), Heart (Environment) and Hand (Charity and Outreach). But most importantly, to further embed the importance of wellbeing and positive mental health into the vision, ethos, behavioural structure and broader curriculum of the School.

On 26th and 27th November 2019, Cranleigh proudly presented its inaugural Senior School musical: Little Shop of Horrors. The show was full of bizarre characters, oversized props, toe-tapping songs and spectacular sets and costumes.

Senior students treated the audience to a thrilling whirlwind of drama, music and dance on an energetic and ambitious scale.

Brilliant costumes and creative set design enhanced the characterisation, but it was the talent of both native and non-native Arabic speakers that truly captured the audience and made for impressive and enjoyable viewing.

A collaboration between the Arabic and Performing Arts Departments brought children of all ages, nationalities and languages together to create a pioneering Arabic production. The performance celebrated theatre, music, dance, puppetry and poetry, all intertwined with Arabic song and narration to tell the inspiring story of the Middle Eastern explorer Ibn Battuta.

Manarat Al Saadiyat Art Visits

As part of the Early Arts Project, our FS1 and FS2 children enjoyed a series of art classes at Manarat Al Saadiyat. Thanks to our inspiring Saadiyat neighbour, the children had an enriching experience of working with professional artists in a real art studio. During the sessions, our 4 and 5 year olds participated in a clay workshop and explored the different mediums of charcoal, paint and wax to make their own imaginative creations.

Years 6 to 8, History of the Emirates

As part of a collaboration between the Social Studies book, The Emirates: Our History and a five-part film documentary series, History of the Emirates, made by Image Nation, a ‘mobile museum’ in the form of a double decker bus visited Cranleigh. The idea was to give pupils the opportunity to discover the UAE’s ancient history in an innovative hands-on environment. Over 200 pupils were able to engage with content drawn from the textbook and the TV documentary. The bus impressed everyone with its virtual reality experiences and 3D holograms of artefacts and archaeological findings. A fantastic experience combining cross-curricular subjects and skills.

This year, we were delighted to launch The International Schools Book Awards, a concept based on The Awesome Book Awards, which is hosted by our sister school, Cranleigh UK. This ongoing initiative is open to all pupils aged 9 to 13 and aims to unite young readers across the UAE and beyond through the joy of books and reading. The theme for the 2020 Awards was Travel; we journeyed across the world on colourful voyages fuelled by intriguing mysteries and tales of adventure.

Legacy Garden One student’s Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) has literally bloomed! Rachel Tracy, inspired by her participation in the Eco Committee (see page 15 for Head, Heart and Hand Committees), has been at the forefront of transforming an area of the School car park into an eco garden. This was a truly community affair, with parents, staff and students all mucking-in to lay turf, plant trees, make wind chimes, bird boxes and composting units ready to plant fruits and vegetables.

Dr. Jane Goodall’s formal opening of the garden provided a fitting touch of prestige to the completion of this truly sustainable project.

International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) 2020 A second successful year in which 17 of our Year 12s and Year 13s interned at IRENA’s 10th Assembly. Two of our students (George Platt and Imogen Andrews) went on to achieve a Young Leader of the Year Middle East Youth Expo 2020 Award and another (Lydia Sanz Lozano) was selected as the first student ever to represent the ‘voice of youth’ and directly address the IRENA Assembly.

Remote Learning Initiatives: Creative Futures, Pre-Collegiate, Bridging the Gap Programme Term 3 witnessed the introduction of a number of programmes that enabled our Senior students to develop a range of skills and knowledge over and above that of the traditional curriculum. The Creative Futures programme encouraged all Senior students to work with a range of teachers on six varied projects; our Year 11s engaged in an A Level PreCollegiate programme helping them to clarify subject choice; and, after participating in our Bridging the Gap initiative, our outgoing Year 13s could leave school knowing they were intellectually, as well as practically, ready for the next chapter of their lives.

Abu Dhabi International Schools Sports Association (ADISSA) The U11 ADISSA Games A team were joint winners of the ADISSA tournament in February. This involved a team of 12 boys and 12 girls competing in swimming, netball, football and athletics.

Visitors to the School Cranleigh had the opportunity to welcome visitors from Europe and the Middle East on tour. We had fantastic competitions against schools such as Wymondham College (UK), Sir William Perkins’s School (UK), Caterham School (UK), Jumeirah English Speaking School (JESS) Arabian Ranches and Jumeirah (Dubai).

British Schools in the Middle East Games (BSME) Hard work and determination resulted in excellent team and individual performances at the BSME Games. In Athletics, our boys team took first place, and our mixed team came second. Our best athletics performance to date. In the U15 squad Harriet Norman was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for Netball. The same honour was given to Lucy Greenhill in the U13 team. Both squads surpassed our expectations to finish within the top ten schools in this Middle Eastern Competition.

School Wide Participation in Sport and CCAs Last year we saw over 830 pupils taking part in regular organised School sports at Cranleigh. A team of 88 passionate teachers helped to coach and prepare these A – D teams for internal and external competitions. It is essential that we give all students the opportunity to participate in sport on a regular basis. With just short of 100 sports teams and with our ‘Sport for All’ mantra there is something for everyone.

HITTING THE RIGHT NOTES The Performing Arts Department is a hive of creative activity and a flagship area of the School. Its outstanding and varied facilities give every pupil the opportunity to find their own individual strengths. Drama clubs, dance companies, music concerts and inter-House performing arts competitions form the day-to-day at Cranleigh. Talent, character and confidence is nurtured in a broad and progressive way. We are delighted at what we managed to achieve prior to lockdown. It was ambitious to be staging two shows, Ibn Battuta and Little Shop of Horrors within the same month but looking back we are so glad that we did.

The quality of these performances and the collaboration shown between Performing Arts and Arabic was an unforgettable way to celebrate interdisciplinary thinking and the creativity of our pupils.

Virtual Ensemble, June 2020 This year we decided to do a virtual ensemble that would not only feature our musicians, but also parents, teachers and staff. With over 55 video submissions and 60 hours of editing, the Cranleigh Virtual Ensemble was formed and the musicians were featured playing Chariots Of Fire for the final assemblies. This project succeeded in bringing together musicians from across our Cranleigh Community and we were proud to have achieved well over 2000 online views of the performance.

Wind Band Celebration, January 2020 The Wind Band Celebration was an enjoyable evening hosted at Cranleigh that saw four schools participate: Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, Canadian International School, American Community School and The British School Al Khubairat (BSAK). Dress Like an Artist Competition During remote learning, pupils studied artworks and interpreted them in their own way. This was an exciting opportunity for pupils to express themselves through artist research and costume.

Cranleigh were honoured to be invited to Louvre Abu Dhabi.

Years 7 to 9 pupils created unique and engaging ways to present artworks using their own imaginations and voices as Young Guides. Our pupils presented Piet Mondrian’s, Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow and Susanna Fritscher’s, Fur Die Luft (For the Air) to The American Community School with enthusiasm and flair. The museum was open to the public as pupils performed and happily involved visitors in their presentation.

The Big Five and 30 Drawings Challenge Years 7 and 8 were challenged to draw from primary and secondary sources. The Big Five project saw them draw African animals in their own style and composition.

Cranleigh Art scholars competed in this year’s BSME Art Competition. This is a highprofile event with participation from over 200 schools. Our scholars created stellar pieces of art in a two hour period on A2 paper. This was a tough challenge for the students who are used to longer periods for reflection and refinement. FULL STEM AHEAD! 50+ Design and Technology offers young people the opportunity to design and produce practical solutions to real and current problems. Art, Maths, IT and Science Departments work alongside Design and Technology to run multiple cross-curricular projects to encourage innovation, creativity,

imagination and flair. Pupils learn how to take risks and use initiative, shaping enterprising capable citizens. This year, despite the School closure interrupting our usual classes, pupils from Years 5 to 13 were still able to participate in fun and engaging projects.

Senior School Senior students developed their subject knowledge, created coursework evidence and researched solutions to various design problems. This year we saw several students attempting new manufacturing techniques not used by any previous cohort of Cranleigh pupils. These included concrete casting, moulding epoxy resin and incorporating arc welding.

The Prep School The Prep School classes worked on a variety of cross curricular assignments including the Towers of Hanoi and Pentomino projects alongside a variety of home economics initiatives. These projects combined mathematical and scientific principles, helping pupils recognise transferable skills and interdisciplinary links.

STEM Scholarship Award (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) 2020 saw the launch of the new Cranleigh STEM Scholarship. This is for selected students who show excellence and commitment in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. To be chosen is a huge accolade.

Saadiyat Beach was the muse for our Year 2 children who spent the day exploring and drawing inspiration from their surroundings. From this sensory experience, the children created their own sea-themed poems, which were performed to parents at the annual Poetry Café.

In July 1960, at the age of 26, Jane Goodall travelled from England to Tanzania and ventured into the little-known world of wild chimpanzees. After nearly 60 years of research, Dr. Jane Goodall (DBE), Primatologist and Anthropologist, travels the world, speaking about conservation and animal welfare issues. Cranleigh Abu Dhabi were honoured to welcome Dr. Jane to the School last year when she gave a moving talk to the Cranleigh Community.

It takes only one person to make great change

It is important to try to cultivate an inner peace, which will only happen if and when we feel good about ourselves.

Every day we interact with other people, animals, and the environment, and each day we have opportunities to help another being on the Earth we all share. Sometimes just smiling can be helpful or simply speaking a kind word. Perhaps one might start picking up rubbish that was left on the street, which might otherwise end up polluting the water harming life in a river or ocean. If we do this day after day, it becomes second nature – eventually perhaps first nature! This makes us feel good so we want to do more, to feel even better. Imagine a billion people all giving a helping hand each day.

We may have different coloured skin, we may be from different cultures, we may eat different things and wear different clothes, but wherever you go in the world: if you cry, your tears are the same.

If you’re happy, you laugh, and the laughter around the world is the same. Within each one of us all around the world, the human heart is structured the same.

I was ten when I decided I wanted to go to Africa and live with wild animals and write books about them. Back then, girls in England didn’t have those opportunities and everybody laughed at me and said, “Jane, dream about something you can achieve.”

But my mother said, “If you really want something, you’re going to have to work hard, take advantage of every opportunity and never give up!”

Take responsibility Think about what you do every day and make ethical, compassionate choices in what you eat, what you buy, what you wear. We all need to realise that collectively we can make a difference. But there is a finite window of time and we’ve got to get together and take action NOW!
