Introduction to

GCSE AND (I)GCSE

The British Curriculum assesses students at aged 16 (Year 11) and 18 (Year 13) through a national examination process The first set of exams, sat by most students in Year 11, is the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) or International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) The final exams are A Levels taken in Year 13

IGCSE courses are designed to be taught over two years Whilst, historically, there has been a trend for students to sit a large number of GCSEs, thankfully many schools are moving away from this, believing in the old adage of quality over quantity; something in which we strongly believe At Cranleigh Abu Dhabi we will help students to choose a suitable programme of study that engages them and ensures that all doors remain open for study post-16 In general, students will be advised to select 9 IGCSEs, although this will be tailored as appropriate A number of subjects are compulsory, in line with UK educational practice, and for those students needing to achieve MoE Equivalency, there are certain subjects which have to be pursued Information about this is set out in the UAE Secondary Equivalency Certificate section of this booklet

This booklet will provide information on both the compulsory and optional subjects Students should take the time to make considered decisions, and we are on hand to help, throughout the year, with these choices We like to encourage students to be as rounded as possible and opting for a range of subjects that include a language, a humanities and an arts is ideal However, a principal guiding force should be that of enjoyment – which subjects excite you and which may be those that you wish to study beyond IGCSE If you enjoy the subject, you are much more likely to be successful in it

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

All students will continue to partake in one Physical Education lesson per week The option to choose co-curricular activities remains and contributes enormously to a holistic education at Cranleigh and forms an important part of the 'whole picture' when making curriculum choices

CORE CURRICULUM

All students will partake in Core Curriculum This is a three-year programme beginning in Year 9 See the Core Curriculum section in this booklet for more details.

CORE CURRICULUM

WHAT IS THE SENIOR SCHOOL CORE CURRICULUM?

The Core Curriculum is a programme unique to Cranleigh Abu Dhabi and is an element of all our Senior School students’ portfolio of courses It is a three-year programme of study, starting in Year 9, where students will have the opportunity to gain a Cranleigh Philosophy certificate and a Higher Project Qualification Students will engage in Core Curriculum lessons each week and will explore a range of modules during their three years of study The Core Curriculum gives our students the opportunity to extend and enrich their Cranleigh experience whilst making valuable connections to their chosen GCSE subjects The Core Curriculum is a holistic and immersive curriculum giving students the opportunity to interact with the world around them, take important steps in preparation for their future, and more importantly, explore how they can become positive social contributors

WHAT ARE THE MODULES OF STUDY?

Careers

& Futures

At Cranleigh, we focus on the journey rather than the destination; our Core Curriculum is a key part of our students’ journey towards the next stage of their lives In order to provide guidance along this journey, each week, students in Years 9 - 11 will engage in a skills lesson that is future-focused These weekly sessions give students the opportunity to consistently engage with their future and take purposeful and meaningful steps towards it. Some of the topics covered here include;

● 21st Century Skills development projects and workshops - including a Careers of the Future project

● IGCSE options exploration, guidance and selection

● Sixth Form options exploration, guidance and selection

● Global perspectives and debate opportunities

● SMART target setting and review to ensure our students’ journey is bespoke and relevant to their personal circumstances

● Study skills and exam preparation workshops

School Certificate in Philosophy

In Year 9, all students will participate in the Cranleigh Philosophy programme and will gain a certificate upon successful completion of the course This programme provides our students with the opportunity to develop critical thinking skills by exploring key issues and topics

The

Higher Project Qualification (HPQ)

Through this qualification, students will have the opportunity to explore an area of interest and passion in an independent yet structured program The HPQ allows students to develop core skills such as academic research, independence, project management, critical thinking and more More information on this course can be found in the subject information section of this booklet

PASTORAL AND INCLUSION SUPPORT

We have a strong and well-founded reputation for our pastoral care, maintaining this commitment to children embarking on their GCSE journey as they enter Year 10 The needs of our children as young individuals are at the core of everything we do; our pastoral support at Cranleigh is tailored to each child Recognising that this transition is a period of significant growth and development, we understand that challenges may arise unexpectedly We believe that fostering a sense of happiness and security among our children will enable them to become confident and independent learners This foundation is crucial as they navigate through their GCSE journey

Children in Year 10 will find themselves at the center of their own pathways, empowered to make choices that align with their aspirations The ongoing, tailored support from our dedicated staff remains constant, ensuring that children receive the assistance they need to overcome challenges and succeed in their academic pursuits

INCLUSION SUPPORT AT GCSE

At Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, the Inclusion Department champions students with additional learning needs (ALN) as they transition into their GCSEs in Year 10 Through ensuring that bespoke support is integrated into all aspects of school life, students are prepared for future independence inside and out of the classroom

In keeping with the ADEK Inclusion Policy, the tiered model is used to ensure that each student receives the appropriate level of support for their individual needs This may take the form of 1:1 support, in-class support or additionally through Learning Passports or Learning Plans which ensure appropriate adaptations and targets are in place in each and every class to support the students’ progress and attainment Students and parents are integral to the development of these documents, which undergo consistent monitoring and regular reviews

Central to the Cranleigh Inclusion approach is the triangulation process with the academic and pastoral teams to identify, implement and review effective teaching approaches Students are carefully coached to understand these strategies and to be able to communicate them effectively to their teachers This collaborative approach extends to parents, through regular review meetings, workshops, special Inclusion events with external agencies and therapy providers, all of which aim to offer guidance as students progress through the Senior School

This approach ensures that each student with ALN receives individualised support, tailored to their unique needs and learning style, placing the learner at the very centre of their academic journey through Senior School

SCIENCE PATHWAYS**

TRIPLE AWARD SCIENCE – ACCELERATED:

This option is suited to the most able students who have already excelled as scientists and those willing to work both very hard and independently. The pace is quick, and students will need to complete independent study due to the demands of the course and reduced contact time. Students study a full IGCSE in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, leading to the award of three separate IGCSE grades. For this option three lessons per fortnight are assigned (compared to four lessons per fortnight for most IGCSEs). This arrangement enables the most able students to study a “further” IGCSE in another subject and will only be available to students who have a consistently high attainment in the Sciences. The End of Year exam performance will weigh heavily in deciding if this is a suitable pathway. As a guide, students who are regularly achieving a grade 8 or higher in the Sciences throughout Year 9 should be considered suitable.

Students selecting this option will be able to select three other option subjects.

TRIPLE AWARD SCIENCE:

Students are assigned four lessons per fortnight for each of the Sciences, as they are with most other IGCSE subjects It affords students the opportunity to study for a full IGCSE in in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, leading to the award of three separate IGCSE grades with a pace which enables key concepts to be reinforced and revisited in alignment with the usual high standards expected of students in the classroom and independently In addition, students selecting this option are assigned one lesson per fortnight as Science Supported Study, during which not only will topics be revised and reinforced for all sciences, but explicit revision skills taught and applied, which will be transferrable skills as lifelong learners

Students taking this option will be able to select two other option subjects

DUAL SCIENCES – BIOLOGY & CHEMISTRY, BIOLOGY & PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY & PHYSICS

Students may select two individual sciences and study each for four lessons per subject, per fortnight This leads to the award of two separate IGCSE grades, one in each of the two sciences studied This path is best suited to students who have strengths in two of the three sciences or who wish to relieve some of the pressure of the final GCSE exams as this course only involves 4 exams (rather than six for triple science), though the content demand is still high In addition, students selecting this option are assigned one lesson per fortnight as Science Supported Study, during which not only will topics be revised and reinforced, but explicit revision skills taught and applied, which will be transferrable skills as lifelong learners

Students taking this option will be able to select three other option subjects

DOUBLE AWARD SCIENCE

This option is recommended for those who do not plan to pursue science beyond GCSE. All three sciences are studied, but only the core of each IGCSE course, meaning there is less content to study and only one examination paper in each science This is designed to be taught in the time allocated, with three lessons per fortnight per science It leads to one result across all three sciences, but the grade is doubled to show it is worth two IGCSEs, presented as 9,9 or 8,7, or 6,6 etc on certificates Many schools in the UK offer only this option, on further reduced timetables, whereas this course represents a strong tradeoff for students looking to develop independence whilst embedding core concepts well to understand the world around them This course suits those students for whom sciences are not intended as a future career choice

Students taking this option will be able to select two other option subjects

**Subject to change The Science pathways offered for each academic year are dependent on student options survey selections

ARABIC LANGUAGE PATHWAYS

REQUIREMENTS FOR EQUIVALENCY

Students studying Arabic as a First Language will follow a course that prepares them for both the IGCSE First Language exam and the prescribed MoE (Ministry of Education) curriculum This enables them to obtain a UK qualification while also preparing for the MoE exam, which is compulsory in Year 13 for native students (as per ADEK requirements)

Non-native Arabic speakers may choose to take the GCSE Second Language course Given that studying Arabic for approximately 160 minutes per week is an ADEK requirement, this is clearly a viable option for students who are likely to pass this GCSE The course will simultaneously prepare students for the MoE Second Language Arabic exam, which is optional in Year 13 Alternatively, students will have the option to drop Arabic in Year 11 if they do not wish to continue their studies Non-native Arabic speakers who are not in a position to succeed in GCSE Arabic will follow the (optional) MoE Second Language Arabic course

ADEK CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS

It is UAE law that certain subjects are followed by students, even in private schools, and regardless of nationality During Year 10, all students will study Arabic. In addition, Muslim students must study Islamic Studies. Details are below

ARABIC LANGUAGE PATHWAYS

HOURS OF STUDY

The table below outlines the compulsory required hours of study as set out by ADEK for each of the MOE subjects

UAE SECONDARY EQUIVALENCY CERTIFICATE
