Strike up the band

Jeremy Duggleby

A group of 4 Wing Cold Lake band musicians rehearse while following social distancing requirements. CLIFF KENYON Despite the ravages of the pandemic the music must go on – it hasn’t died, it’s just hiding for a while. You’ve seen on TV news as musicians perform on the street or from balconies and the 4 Wing Brass and Reed Band is staying sharp and in tune for when they will be needed again. Many band members have been rehearsing at home alone because meeting and rehearsing with the 20 members of the band wouldn’t be permited. “Since our typical full rehearsal is upwards of 20 personnel, we’ll be on hold until those restrictions ease up a bit more,” said Band Master WO/Adj Jeremy Duggleby.

“We are currently rehearsing our small group (Brass Quintet) as we’re able to maintain a 6’ distance between all the players while rehearsing,” he said. “As you can imagine, with that kind of spacing and a larger ensemble, the physical distancing requirement would be difficult to meet.” “Online rehearsals are at the mercy of a technology that can’t quite keep up with such a large group,” he said, although band members continue to explore options. The band usually performs several times during summer and at mess functions, but all such gatherings have been cancelled. “Our typical ‘Mess Dinner Season’ didn’t really happen this year. My hope is that by the fall we will be able to begin performing in public again, but that

will depend upon the restrictions put in place by all levels of government and 4 Wing.” “I’ve been exploring the option of doing a small group performance live online, but the challenges posed by a larger group in the same situation are magnified. Once again, I believe we will eventually get back to pre-COVID-19 ‘normal’ but it may take some time.” Duggleby said band members miss making music together. “Walking into the band room right now is like walking into a ghost town in an old western - exacerbated at the moment by open windows and the wind whistling through the screens. I very much miss the folks in the Band as well. They’ve become a sort of extended family over the last few years, and not

seeing them on a regular basis has really been challenging.” Usually for band members it’s all about making great music, something the band has been doing for more than 40 years. Duggleby admits it can be a lot of work but band members, about 45 volunteers who are Canadian Armed Forces members and civilians, are driven to hit the right notes. “They are enthusiastic about coming out to perform and for rehearsals,” said Duggleby. The mix of CAF members and civilians is the perfect combination for long-term success. “The band is a perfect bridge between the community and the base.”
