Clogging

Clogging is a melting pot of many different styles of dance. Clogging was developed from steps of English Country, Irish and German Court, American Folk, and Cherokee Dances, as well as African rhythms and movement.

Clogging shoes have double taps on both the heel and the toe, also known as “Jingle taps.”

Songs are choreographed by using traditional clogging steps going back as far as the 19th century. A variety of music is used from traditional Celtic, country old and new, to modern pop and hip hop.

Clogging is a fun, energetic, dynamic dance class that is for a beginner up to an advanced dancer.

Elaine Brisebois has been clogging since 2003, when she was introduced to the dance at a workshop. The Cold Lake Cloggers were formed in 2006, and dance out of Mackenzie Arts and Community Centre on the base.

Elaine has travelled to Nashville (3 times), San Diego, New Orleans, Orlando, Grapevine, Las Vegas and Reno for the past 10 years to the National Clogging Conventions.

Fall session begins September 18.

Campaigns & Events

September Campaign: Strong Minds

The focus of September’s campaign is promoting mental resiliency and toughness during everyday life, with a specific target on increasing resiliency during uncertain times.

World Suicide Prevention Day is on 10 September 2023. Organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), it is a chance for everyone to promote understanding about suicide. “Creating hope through action” is the triennial theme for the World Suicide Prevention Day from 2021 - 2023. This theme is a reminder that there is an alternative to suicide and aims to inspire confidence and light in all of us. We can all play a role in supporting those experiencing a suicidal crisis or those bereaved by suicide whether as a member of society, as a child, as a parent, as a friend, as a colleague or as a person with lived experience. We can all encourage understanding about the issue, reach in to people who are struggling, and share our experiences. We can all create hope through action and be the light.

October Campaign: Healthy Workplace Month

Healthy workplace month is all about building awareness of the importance of healthy workplace health for the short and longterm success of organizations and for the well-being of their employees. Focusing on the topic for an entire month gives workplaces more time to plan, promote and execute programs and activities for employees.

The goals of Canada’s Healthy Workplace Month are to:

▶ Increase awareness of the need for a comprehensive approach to workplace health in Canada that is influenced by the four elements of a healthy workplace: (1) Healthy

45

Lifestyles; (2) Workplace Culture and Mental Health; (3) Physical Environment and; (4) Corporate Social Responsibility.

▶ Provide healthy workplace tools, resources and best practice examples to help organizations create healthy workplaces with benefits for employees and themselves

▶ Increase the number of healthy workplaces in Canada

Healthy Relationships Campaign (16 - 27 October)

Wouldn’t it be nice if each relationship came with its own user manual to help us navigate through the rough spots? Keeping a relationship healthy is not always easy. Add the challenges that come with one or both partners being in the military. That can be an even bigger challenge! The healthy relationships campaign provides all kinds of helpful tips to CAF members and their families on how to navigate through their everyday relationships. Whether your relationship is healthy or struggling, we’ll provide plenty of information and supports. This year, the campaign will be exploring the topics of separation and divorce, as well as co-parenting after a relationship ends.

Healthy relationships resources can be found all year round at https://cfmws.ca/support-services/health-wellness/ healthyrelationships

November Campaign: Addictions Awareness

Substance use is a complex and far-reaching issue. It is associated with a staggering health impact and cost to society. In 2017, substance use in Canada cost almost $46 billion. It led to more than 275,000 hospitalizations and contributed to the loss of nearly 75,000 lives. The COVID-19 pandemic made an already complicated substance use landscape even more complex. The mental health and well-being of people living in Canada were significantly impacted. It takes a wide range of perspectives and collectives to drive needed change, so during the month of November, we aim to highlight Inspiration, Innovation and Inclusion as key factors for a healthier society where evidence can transform approaches to substance use health.

National Addictions Awareness Week (NAAW), 19 - 25 November 2023, highlights solutions to help address the harms related to alcohol and other drugs. It provides an opportunity for people

46

in Canada to learn more about the causes and prevention of harms, talk about treatment and recovery, and advance solutions for change.

Available upon request

▶ Customized briefings, presentations, and workshops from 15 minutes to 3 hours. > See more

▶ Tobacco and vaping reduction/cessation individual program. > See more
