The Phone Is Still A Big Deal For Your Customer Experience

In this ever-evolving business landscape, it can be easy to get lost in the rush to create flashy advertisements and digital campaigns. However, amidst all the noise and chaos, there is still one timeless tool that remains incredibly powerful: the phone call. With just a few moments of time on the line with a customer or potential client, businesses have an unparalleled opportunity to connect on a personal level and leave a lasting impression. The power of a phone call cannot be overstated; it allows companies to demonstrate their commitment to exceptional service and build trust with consumers in ways that no other medium can match. By taking advantage of this tried-and-true method of communication, brands can cut through the clutter and differentiate themselves from competitors who rely solely on impersonal online interactions. So, when it comes down to it, don’t underestimate the incredible impact that even just one simple phone call can have on your bottom line - because sometimes even in our high-tech world, old-fashioned human connection is still king.

A personalised experience like no other

When it comes to customer experience, technology has undoubtedly made significant strides in enhancing the way businesses interact with their customers. However, the phone remains unmatched in providing a personalised and human touch that cannot be replicated by any technological innovation. The ability of a real person on the other end of the line to empathise, understand and respond appropriately to a customer’s concerns or queries is invaluable. This level of emotional connection is impossible for even the most advanced AI-powered chatbots or virtual assistants to replicate convincingly. Additionally, phone conversations allow for immediate feedback and resolution of issues without requiring lengthy back-and-forth emails or chats. So, while technology may continue to improve customer experiences through various innovative solutions, it can never beat the effectiveness and value offered by live telephone communication in building strong relationships with customers based on trust, empathy and understanding.

The Rise of Customer Expectations

In recent years, the rise of customer expectations has been a game-changer for businesses. Today’s customers demand more from companies than ever before. They expect quick and efficient assistance from knowledgeable professionals who can address their concerns with ease. Long wait times and complicated call trees can quickly frustrate customers, leading them straight into the arms of your competition. As such, businesses must prioritise delivering exceptional service if they hope to retain loyal customers and attract new ones in today’s highly competitive market. Failure to do so could result in lost revenue, damaged reputation, and reduced brand loyalty – all factors that no business can afford to ignore in this day and age.

As a business owner, maintaining this consistent level of first-class customer service can be a daunting task. The pressure to meet customers' ever-increasing demands while juggling other essential business responsibilities can leave you feeling stretched thin. However, thanks to third-party providers with expertise in delivering exceptional customer service, outsourcing has become an increasingly popular solution for businesses seeking to maintain their reputation and keep customers satisfied. These providers have the skills and resources necessary to ensure that each interaction with your clients is met with professionalism and care, leaving them feeling valued and appreciated. By partnering with these experts, you can focus on growing your business while resting assured knowing that your customers are receiving exceptional service every time they interact with your brand.

04

The benefits of outsourcing your customer service

Cost-effective 1

Outsourcing to a customer service provider can have significant savings for your business, with reduced costs of up to 70%. This is due to the fact that hiring and training in-house staff can be costly and time-consuming, whereas outsourcing allows businesses to take advantage of economies of scale. Customer service providers are able to spread their fixed costs across multiple clients, resulting in lower prices per client. Additionally, outsourcing eliminates the need for expensive equipment and infrastructure investments, as well as ongoing maintenance costs.

Consistent Branding 2

When customers call your business, they expect a consistent experience regardless of who they speak to. With professional live agents, you can ensure that all of your calls are answered in a personalised, consistent manner that reflects your brand. This includes using the right tone of voice, using correct branding language, and ensuring that callers feel welcomed and valued.

Increased Flexibility 3

One of the biggest advantages of outsourcing your customer service is increased flexibility. With a professional provider, you can set up custom call routing and handling rules that are tailored to your business needs. This means that calls can be directed to the right departments or individuals, even if they're not in the same location. Additionally, your provider can offer extended hours of operation, so your customers can get the help they need even outside of regular business hours.

Improved Efficiency 4

By outsourcing your customer service, you can improve the efficiency of your business operations. Rather than having your staff spend valuable time answering calls, they can focus on other tasks that are essential to your business. Additionally, a customer service provider can provide detailed call reports and analytics, so you can track call volume, monitor call quality, and identify areas for improvement.

Enhanced Customer Experience 5

Ultimately, the most important benefit is the enhanced customer experience that can be provided. With highly trained live agents you can ensure that every caller is treated with respect and professionalism, regardless of the nature of their call. This can help to build trust and loyalty with your customers, which can lead to increased revenue and improved customer retention.

County Kildare Chamber has won the ‘Supporting Members’ award at the 2023 Chamber Awards.

The awards, hosted by Chambers Ireland and sponsored by Zurich, identify the outstanding work of chambers of commerce throughout the country in supporting local, regional and national business.

The award was recognised for the Chambers ‘Kildare Schools Roadshow’ campaign. The project originated from discussions at a Chamber Policy Advisory Council meeting, where members expressed interest in developing a trade expo for the next generation of students. The aim of the project is to visit one school in each Municipal District, accompanied by 4-5 member companies.

During these visits, the companies presented their businesses, shared industry insights, and highlighted potential career and educational opportunities. The students had the unique opportunity to engage in one-on-one conversations with the companies, fostering connections and building a link between the students and local businesses in their community.

This initiative aimed to create a strong bond between students, businesses, and the community, while also addressing future skills gaps in the county. By providing students with first-hand exposure to local companies and showcasing the diverse career options available, the roadshow empowered students to envision a future filled with possibilities.

Sinéad Ronan, Public Affairs Manager at County Kildare Chamber said:

“We are delighted to win this award and it is fantastic recognition for the work put in by the team in the Chamber along with our businesses in Kildare who took part in the roadshow.

The work undertaken in this project encapsulates everything we do at the Chamber. Through this proactive and innovative approach, we as a Chamber wanted to demonstrate our commitment to investing in the potential of the youth and creating a vibrant community where education, business, and community engagement thrive harmoniously.

This award motivates us in the Chamber to do more in the area of sustainable development for the county and leading by example, demonstrating the value in collaboration between the educational and business sectors, fostering a thriving ecosystem that would contribute to the Kildare’s growth and success.”

Washington DC Trip 2023

County Kildare Chamber Public Affairs Manager Sinéad

Ronan, was in Washington DC in May as part of a 50 strong delegation representing Ireland at Select USA, one of the largest investment summits in the world, led by U.S. Ambassador Claire Cronin and her team.

The summit was a significant event for Ireland’s business community, providing valuable insights into various business opportunities available for Irish businesses looking to invest in the United States. With representatives from most US states present, it offered a chance for Kildare to strengthen its existing connections and explore new partnerships within the US.

The delegation included several state agencies, such as Enterprise Ireland, led by Leo Clancy, and officials from the Department of Enterprise, Trade, and Employment. Their presence demonstrates Ireland’s commitment to supporting businesses in expanding their operations internationally.

The Irish ambassador to the US, Geraldine Byrne Nason, and the Irish Embassy team provided a warm welcome and support to the visiting delegation and hosted a welcome reception to the visiting delegation at her residence in DC.

The Chambers Ireland network was well-represented at the event, with participation from a geographical spread, including Cork Chamber, Galway Chamber, Waterford Chamber, and Dublin Chamber. Additionally, the collaboration with the American Chamber of Commerce Ireland allowed for a unified and positive message about

Irish innovation and investment opportunities to be conveyed.

Overall, the Select USA Investment Summit served as an important platform for Kildare and Ireland to showcase its capabilities, forge new connections, and strengthen existing relationships with US counterparts.

Minister for Finance, Michael McGrath TD

Minister for Finance, Michael McGrath TD attended a County Kildare Chamber Policy Advisory Council meeting on the 18th May, followed by the annual Chamber Presidents Lunch. During the productive sessions, Minister McGrath engaged with local business leaders and discussed crucial matters related to Kildare with a primary focus on Budget 2024.

President Mairead Hennessy during the luncheon, praised the Chamber’s increased efforts in providing opportunities for its members locally, nationally, and internationally, as evidenced by the growing membership and successful lobbying activities. She highlighted the significance of the earlier meeting with Minister McGrath, stating, “Today, our Policy Advisory Council had an extremely productive meeting with Minister McGrath focused on supports for business and our key asks for Budget 2024”.

Sinéad Ronan, the Public Affairs Manager, stated ‘It was great to have the opportunity to welcome Minister McGrath to today’s Policy Advisory Council meeting’. She emphasized the wide-ranging discussions held during the meeting, which covered key challenges and opportunities facing the business community in Kildare and the mid-eastern region. Topics such as housing, skills gaps, government funding initiatives, infrastructure difficulties and Budget 2024 were thoroughly addressed.

Allan Shine, CEO County Kildare Chamber expressed his gratitude for Minister McGrath’s visit to Naas, emphasizing the timeliness and importance of the meeting. He stressed the significance of direct engagement between Minister McGrath and the Chamber, the Local Enterprise Office, and the Council to address issues directly impacting Kildare businesses. CEO Shine stated, “This was a positive and useful engagement with Minister McGrath, and we hope to have ongoing engagements with Government Ministers, especially at this crucial time for many of our members with regard to Budget 2024.”

Minister McGrath, acknowledging the strength of the economy highlighted the positive state of employment in Ireland, surpassing pre-pandemic levels with an increase of 220,000 working individuals, representing a historic milestone for the county. With 2.6 million people now employed in the Irish economy, Minister McGrath commended the businesses present at the luncheon for their contributions to investment, innovation, risk-taking, and job creation.

The Minister also made specific mention of the equine industry within Kildare and the contribution it makes to the county, with 3 racecourses and over 15,000 people employed either directly or indirectly through

the sector. He reassured industry leaders that the Government stood foursquare behind the sector which makes a huge economic contribution not just to Kildare but to the country.

Minister McGrath also addressed economic matters, emphasising the Government’s commitment to addressing the inflationary pressures caused by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. While acknowledging the recent decline in inflation, he warned that the necessary monetary policy response would significantly impact the country’s economic development in the coming years, including the potential consequences associated with high interest rates.

Minister McGrath expressed satisfaction with the current state of public finances, highlighting the budget surpluses that enable policy choices for the benefit of the economy. County Kildare Chamber extends its appreciation to Minister McGrath for his valuable insights and looks forward to continued collaboration with the government, especially as Budget 2024 approaches.

Attends County Kildare Chamber Policy Advisory Council & Chamber Presidents Luncheon

Enterprise Ireland

Leo, firstly tell me a bit about your background and how you got to your current position as CEO of Enterprise Ireland?

Originally from Tipperary, I grew up on a dairy farm there. I studied Electronic Engineering in DIT and worked in the telecommunications industry for most of my career including with Ericsson, the Swedish multinational, and nearly 5 years with e|net, then a small but high growth Irish company. I joined IDA Ireland in 2013 to lead the Technology sector and was fortunate to work with the leading global tech firms who were my clients, before being appointed CEO of Enterprise Ireland in 2021. We moved to Naas in 1999 so our kids are Kildare born and bred and we really enjoy living in the town.

How would you assess the level of support for SMEs in Ireland particularly from a regional development perspective?

I think the level of support for SMEs in Ireland is great, compared to that available in almost any country in the world. We meet equivalent agencies from around the world all the time and we hear how Ireland’s model for supporting companies is the envy of so many.

With 31 Local Enterprise Offices (LEO) operating in each Local Authority area serving

small and starting companies and with Enterprise Ireland services available nationally to larger and high growth firms, there are a lot of supports out there. One challenge we are working hard on is to make it easier for companies is to understand what’s available. I’d advise any SME owner who’s unsure of what’s on offer to contact the Kildare LEO, led by Jacqui McNabb. I know the Chamber does an excellent job of signposting what’s available also.

Most supports are designed to help companies that are exporting or with a strong export ambition but there are lots of resources available on a more general basis to all companies.

We are very focused on regional and indeed rural development. Enterprise Ireland supported companies have 68% of their employment outside Dublin and LEO supported clients created 84% of jobs outside Dublin last year.

At a time of political & social unrest both nationally and globally, how is EI preparing for the many potential threats ahead?

The health of our economy is something we should be thankful for as we head into

potentially more difficult times globally. Ireland depends very heavily on trade and international prosperity. We have record employment, tax receipts and surpluses, a performance unmatched almost anywhere in the world.

I’m also glad that the sectors and markets are highly diversified. For instance, we saw exports from EI clients grow in all global locations, including a whopping 27% in Europe last year. Also, employment continues to grow substantially.

We are preparing for the future by focusing on the core job, working with our client companies to help them grow productivity, including through digital, and to innovate. Innovation is a key differentiator for companies, allowing higher margins and better competitive position. We are also working to help companies create and execute sustainability plans for their businesses. In global markets I believe if you don’t have a solid plan for sustainability you will eventually be unable to sell.

What would you like to see from your term as CEO of EI?

I am two years at EI now. I would like to see several outputs over my time here but first

10 ISSUE 10 - July 2023
Allan Shine sat down with Leo Clancy of Enterprise Ireland recently to find out more about EI and the supports they can offer businesses.

among them is that I believe we must put Irishowned exporting business on track to be the main driver of our economy. This means giving companies with potential to grow substantially reasons to stay in Irish ownership and enabling them to scale globally.

Central to this is ambition of the owners and leaders, backed by innovation, digital delivery and sustainable business models. In this regard we are working hard to increase the number and quality of new companies we support through New Frontiers, our startup training programme, through our new PreSeed Start Fund and through closer integration with our LEO colleagues. We are also working on strengthening the supports available for already successful companies to achieve high growth.

Are there any specific projects or goals you are looking at over the next year?

We are working on lots of projects at any time. I’ll pick two.

First, we are putting in place a plan to help companies grow their awareness of sustainability. We are also working on additional measures to help address the requirements of our Climate Action Plan, which targets a 35% reduction in emissions by 2030. Linked to this, we have some people working on the Government industry strategy for offshore wind, which will be a game changer, not just for coastal communities but for the whole country.

Second, we are working on a wide-ranging digital transformation plan for Enterprise Ireland, aiming to make our services more accessible and efficient for our clients and cutting the level of work it takes for people to engage with us.

What do you see are the new emerging sectors that can create waves across Europe and beyond?

We are thankfully seeing growth across all sectors but a number stand out.

I believe sustainability and products and services related to wind and other renewables is already a strong sector for us. This will grow substantially as the world works towards electric-based net zero economy.

Construction has been a very strong growth sector. Based on experience building advanced factories and energy infrastructure for companies like Intel and Pfizer and Microsoft, Irish construction and facilities companies have had huge success running projects overseas.

Medical technology is another fast growth area I believe has huge potential. I recently spoke to the Digital Health Summer School in Maynooth University and it highlights how much Ireland has to offer in this space. Food is a great driver of the economy and will continue to grow. In Naas alone we have

businesses like Kerry Group, Dawn Farms, Irish Dog Foods, Nomad and more.

Growth will also include relatively niche areas such as Agritech where we are already strong – including some great Kildare companies, by the way, such as Terra Nutritech and Pearsons in Athy.

One aspect of growing globally from Ireland is that digital represents a huge opportunity, no matter what the sector. You can sell and deliver a digital project to anywhere in the world from Ireland. Even in more traditional manufacturing industry, having digital added to your product makes it stickier with customers and gives a new, easier to deliver revenue line.

In Ireland we’re fortunate that we have a strong position in a lot of sectors essential to growth of the global economy. I think we’ll see huge success as a result.

The future is bright for Irish companies entering and expanding in world markets. We are extremely fortunate to have Leo Clancy leading the charge for our businesses that export. A hugely passionate person who is ensuring that businesses have every opportunity to firstly start, then grow, innovate, and most importantly win export sales in global markets.

Paltech, have helped to develop a solution for this plastic waste, recycling it into 7kg flower pots, (which are available to buy in all the Major Tesco Stores throughout the country) they also produce 200kg crash barriers, 150-gallon water troughs, fencing posts and railway sleepers from waste plastics.

Green Generation is a Kildare-based renewable energy company, using Anaerobic Digestion (AD) to convert agricultural and food processing waste to several usable end-products. AD is a natural microbial process which we harness to break down organic waste into biogas and an organic fertiliser by-product called ‘Digestate’ converting ‘waste’ into a ‘resource’. By capturing the gas that would have been emitted if these wastes were sent to landfill, they reduce the environmental impact of agricultural production and food processing.

They use some of the biogas to produce renewable heat and electricity which is used to power the AD plant and the excess is exported into the national electricity grid.

They upgrade most of the biogas into “biomethane” which is injected as renewable gas into the national gas grid in conjunction with Gas Networks Ireland. The injection point is located at Cush, Co. Kildare and is the first of its kind in Ireland and helps pave the way towards achieving national and EU renewable energy targets.

Green Generation also use some of the Biomethane to power some of own HGV’s and Trucks.

The spent organic material from the digestion process (referred to as “digestate”) is pasteurised to EU standards and then distributed to local farmers as a high-nutrient organic fertiliser, offsetting chemical fertiliser usage.

Green Generation is actively involved in several research projects seeking to increase renewable energy production from organic waste. One such project ‘EirAlgae’, partnering with UCD and supported by Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland (SEAI), seeks to use the CO2 from the biogas and some nitrogen from the digestate, to produce micro-

Jigsaw Better Business is an award-winning team of Lean, Green, Digital, & Leadership coaches. Through creative problem solving, innovation, & people development, they help great businesses BE BETTER.

They support business leaders to step back and look at what they do each day with fresh eyes. As Lean coaches, they work with businesses to reduce waste and enhance value to their customers. When clients work with Jigsaw Better Business, it means having an experienced mentor stand alongside you, asking insightful questions. It means having someone help you get the stone out of your shoe: the painful little problem that others might not be aware of, but which is hindering your progress. If you’ve ever looked at how you work and thought, “there must be a better way”, that’s where Jigsaw Better Business come in.

While Lean is associated with improving processes and efficiency, at its heart is helping people. It is people who carry out the daily business operations, manage the business, and have a vision for its future. For many companies, their greatest asset is their people. Products can be copied; certain roles can be automated. But what’s harder to replicate or automate is the culture and people within an organisation.

Many of Jigsaw’s clients are astute entrepreneurs who have set up their own business, but then realise that they need to hire and retain talent to help them achieve their vision. Managing people and creating an inclusive and appealing work environment is no small feat, and many need support with this. Jigsaw’s chartered organisational psychologist works alongside leaders and teams to improve how people experience work.

Other clients are finding that their team isn’t really a team, but rather a collection of people working on separate tasks. By becoming clearer on who they are, what their strengths are, and what is the common purpose that unites them, they can create more collaborative, engaged teams. Jigsaw’s approach is backed by research and a breadth of practical experience.

They have worked with hundreds of businesses across Ireland, including butchers, bakers, and candlestick makers. No matter what type or size of business you have, after working with them you will make improvements in how you operate. Every project they have worked on has resulted in cost savings or increased capacity, and usually both together.

They also believe that the less tangible benefits are as important. These include having more confidence about making business decisions, better relationships between teams, and getting closer to long-term goals. For business owners, it means getting the work done within normal working hours and having a more sustainable work-life balance. In other words, better business.

Oskar Pfungst, a German comparative biologist and psychologist, set about testing the basis for these claims. After a substantial number of trials, Pfungst found that the horse could get the correct answer even if the horse’s owner did not ask the questions, and ruled out the possibility of fraud. However, Hans only gave the right answer when the questioner knew the answer and he could see the questioner. He observed that when von Osten knew the answers to the questions, Hans got 89% of the answers correct, but when von Osten did not know the answers, Hans answered only 9% correctly.

Ever heard of the Clever Hans effect? In 1907 in Germany there was a horse called Hans owned by Wilhelm von Osten, who was a mathematics teacher and amateur horse trainer. It was said that Hans had been taught to do all forms of maths, from addition to subtraction. He could even work with fractions, tell time, differentiate between musical tones, spell, and understand German.

So what is the relevance of this story and what has it to do with the work at Martinstown Lodge? Martinstown Lodge is a national multi award winning haven delivering leadership and team development workshops through the power of working with horses, facilitated by professional coaches. It delivers a highly innovative and impactful developmental experience that gets right to the root of the challenge in teams and in leaders in a very powerful way.

workshops, supporting clients to achieve their goals. Working with horses on the ground (no horse riding involved) provides a supportive catalyst for change, increasing self-awareness of one’s approach and impact on others in a meaningful and non-judgemental way. This is an effective and proven developmental process that is evidenced to help people unlock their full potential as highly effective leaders and teams.

Working through horses helps provide deep insight and increases awareness of leadership style; increases understanding of roles within a team; provides an opportunity to refocus on goals; improves communication skills and support teams to work better, building trust and respect. Importantly all in a fun and relaxed environment delivering a powerful evidence based unforgettable learning experience, a talking point for years to come!

The positive feedback of the impact of the workshops at Martinstown Lodge on businesses has been overwhelming and continues to deliver proven results. With a full schedule for the summer Martinstown Lodge continues to forge a path ahead in delivering high quality leadership and team development to all businesses in Kildare and further afield.

As with Hans, horses mirror how we communicate and sense and respond to subtle cues in our behaviour, providing instant, honest and accurate feedback in the moment. This gets to the core of issues quickly and effectively, a very powerful mechanism for sustainable professional development. Effective communication skills foster an open and positive relationship between leaders and their teams, which increases productivity and efficiency and is used by companies throughout the world.

Barberstown Castle

Kildare’s Hidden Gem is Sparkling

“It’s important to create your own niche in the market, providing something different, something special - the old world feel with a modern twist,” according to Ted Robinson, Managing Director of Barberstown Castle, a renowned landmark nestled in the rich fertile plains of north Kildare. This stunning property acquired by Amanda Torrens, has operated as a hotel for around 50 years, having had 37 owners dating back to 1288. Nicholas Barber, who the castle is named after, built it as a castle keep, while the renowned musician Eric Clapton owned the property between 1979 and 1987. During that period the castle played host to some of the most iconic musicians in the world, including the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. From 1987, it was owned by Ken Healy, who developed it from a 25-bed to a 58-bed hotel, which also became home to a well-renowned restaurant. Currently, Barberstown Castle is open seven days a week and is actively engaging with local communities in Clane, Celbridge, Leixlip, Maynooth and of course Straffan, all of whom have embraced this important landmark. There is an even broader appeal of Barberstown Castle to the south County Dublin market described by Ted. “It feels like the country, but it’s only a short distance from Dublin City Centre. You can stay in a

castle, enjoy a five-course meal in a really relaxed atmosphere, and really feel like you’ve had a break.”

Walking through the doors of Barberstown, guests can experience various architectural changes to the castle over many centuries, including a large and inviting reception area which retains the original features of the castle. While cuisine has always been renowned, led for the last 25 years by an amazing executive head chef in Bertie Malabat, the focus is also on making guests feel welcome and at ease within an intimate, yet homely environment. Work has also begun upgrading bedrooms, creating a bespoke feeling befitting a 13th century castle, with the eventual goal of developing the first and second floors into an impressive Presidential Suite. What was formerly ‘The Old Bar’, has been transformed into ‘The Barton Bar’, perfect for pre-dinner drinks and entertaining. ‘The Barton Rooms Restaurant’ was once the original dining room of the Main House and has recently been refurbished to create the perfect fine dining experience. The conservatory area has also evolved into ‘The Garden Bar’, with a focus on development of interior elements, while retaining its unique character. Yet another stunning aspect of this property lies within

the vast gardens of Barberstown Castle, ably managed by full-time gardener, Terry Healy. Improved hotel signage has had a high impact, complemented by front and rear access to the castle. The vision is an experience of a beautiful, medieval home people can avail of for a business meeting or friendly cup of tea, with an ever-present welcome.

There are also ‘quirky’ places for guests to enjoy, including the old medieval banqueting hall, perfect for civil wedding ceremonies and extremely popular for wedding gatherings over several days. In fact, Barberstown Castle can accommodate weddings for 240 guests, with all aspects of the celebration being catered for in-house. Guests can enjoy dinner the night before the civil ceremony in the ‘Castle Keep’, which is over 800-years old. A stunning pre-drinks reception can be arranged in the ‘Banqueting Hall’ followed by nuptials in the ‘Medieval Conservatory’, with of course, celebratory drinks and fine dining afterwards. The following day, a less formal barbeque can be hosted in the ‘Haggard Bar’ which is an old traditional pub located in what were formerly our stables. In addition, Barberstown’s stunning gardens hosts the ‘Shephard’s Bar’ which is ideal for smaller

18 ISSUE 10 - July 2023

gatherings, surrounded by a backdrop perfect for wedding photographs.

The wedding market is central to Barbertown Castle, with the ultimate goal of hosting one wedding a day. “One of the beauties of Barberstown is that you can have three or four things happening in different parts of the hotel, at the same time and still enjoy a coffee in the relaxed setting of the lobby,” Ted enthuses. He is also passionate about flying and holds a helicopter pilot licence. Ted has been able to marry his passion by offering luxury options to guests including lunch at the hotel with a return helicopter flight to locations like the Punchestown Races or the Curragh Racecourse, as well as Ladies’ Day, then fly back to enjoy their competitively priced luxurious package. “We are proud to offer this kind of service,” beams Ted. The helicopter offering can also cater to guests arriving at Dublin airport. In addition, the mid-week leisure market is an area of opportunity for Barberstown, offering exciting experiences like clay pigeon shooting in nearby Abbeylands, or horse riding, along with an afternoon tea experience.

Barberstown’s position as the closest castle to Dublin Airport is a perfect start or end

point for tours around the country. The target market is primarily the tourism sector, particularly influenced by the US market, catering for high-end tour groups. The US is also an important market for bespoke wedding experiences. Barberstown Castle also partners with Dynamic Events to offer additional activities, ranging from orienteering to corporate event packages. The corporate market is also important, offering a range of unique meeting rooms, with all the facilities required, including state-of-the-art WiFi and IT systems.

There is enormous importance placed on the team at Barberstown. “We have a great, passionate team lead by our extremely experienced General Manager Richard

Millea, and our vision is to be one of the friendliest castles in Ireland,” gushes Ted. Like all areas of the hospitality industry, staffing is most challenging, so Barberstown recognises the importance of a happy and fulfilled experience for their team. Currently, there are approximately 100 team members, both full and part-time. This close relationship with staff helps build an important relationship with guests, which is of central importance, providing an amazing, warm Irish welcome and anticipation of every guest’s needs. According to Ted, “We want to develop what we have and fine tune it, and then really express ourselves in terms of the next level. We want visitors to say wow, it’s special, it’s different!”

MEMBERSHIP SENTIMENT SURVEY REPORT Q2 2023

The Chamber conducted its quarterly survey over a period of two weeks from the 23rd May- 6th June 2023.

Of the total responses received, 42% where from businesses with 21 plus employees, while 58% came from businesses with staff ranging from one to 20 employees. Over 60% of the responses came from the ICT & Digital economy area, Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure, Retail, Agri food & drink and the service industry.

The survey concentrated on the Budget 2024 asks for the Kildare business community, specifically measures to increase housing supply within the county, increased investment in infrastructure projects and in public services. The survey also dealt with key business challenges of competitiveness in Kildare, Housing, Energy Costs, Sustainable Development and staff retention. It particularly highlighted continuing challenges Kildare businesses are having with regards to housing availability and the cost of energy, all of which businesses see as substantial barriers to competitiveness within Kildare.

The survey found that 41% of businesses consider housing availability the #1 issue affecting competitiveness within Kildare, closely followed by the availability of skills and talent. The survey also found over 75% of business owners were concerned about the adverse effects of rising energy cost on their operations and profitability.

Each month it becomes more and more evident that housing poses a significant challenge to Kildare’s ability to maintain its competitiveness as a county. The shortage of available housing and rental accommodations has reached a crisis point, posing a major obstacle to the ongoing growth and development of our economic ecosystem. The housing crisis is now a pressing concern, impacting both workplace harmony and broader societal cohesion.

County Kildare Chamber is currently in the process of preparing our pre-budget submission, with a specific focus on housing and the availability of skills within the county. By

emphasising the importance of housing and skills availability, the chamber aims to advocate for necessary investments and policy measures that will support the development and growth of our local economy. Through this submission, the chamber seeks to highlight the critical role that affordable and accessible housing plays in attracting and retaining talent, fostering entrepreneurship, and bolstering the overall competitiveness of Kildare. Additionally, the submission will emphasise the need for comprehensive strategies to enhance skill development and training opportunities, addressing any existing gaps and ensuring that the workforce is equipped with the necessary capabilities to thrive in our evolving economic landscape. By prioritising these key areas, County Kildare Chamber aims to contribute to the long-term sustainability and prosperity of Kildare, laying the foundation for a vibrant and thriving business community.

The Sales Center began in 1980 as an agency selling Endress+Hauser devices, and eventually as an Endress+Hauser owned company. They began trading as Endress+Hauser Ireland in the early 2000’s. It is now a thriving organisation which serves the Irish Market and its customers faithfully. Endress+Hauser Ireland covers the 26 counties, and it operates from two offices, Kill, Co. Kildare with around 20 staff and Fota Business Park, Co Cork with around 17 staff, with Kildare acting as the head office for Ireland.

What do Endress+Hauser do? Endress+Hauser provide measurement devices for industrial process engineering. They manufacture, sell and service devices to measure flow, level, pressure, temperature, liquid analysis such as pH, and optical analysis for chemical properties of substances.

Their customers come from a variety of industries including chemical, food & beverage, life sciences, power & energy, mining, minerals & metals, oil & gas and water & wastewater. In Ireland, the three main industries are Life Sciences (Pharmaceuticals), Food & Beverage, and Water & Wastewater.

For Endress+Hauser Ireland, the main activities for the sales center are sizing, selecting and selling measurement devices, and providing services for our customers including commissioning, calibration, and repairs.

The Regional Support Center was established in 2016 at the existing Sales Center location in Kill. It was initially setup to support multiple Endress+Hauser Sales Centers across Europe and Asia in the transition from a previous ERP system to ERP SAP, the standard within Endress+Hauser Group.

With a proven track record in shared service provisions, and the availability of a diverse workforce with the skills required, these were some of the reasons why Endress+Hauser chose Ireland as the location for the Regional Support Center.

From an initial team of 6 people, the team and its remit have continued to grow over the past 7 years. The team is now 10 people who provide both back-office and valueadded support activities to our customers. The growth within the team has come from candidates from the local region of Kildare. With the proven success of the Regional Support Center in Ireland, it made the choice for the Endress+Hauser Group to develop a campus location here much easier and ensured it will flourish in Kill.

Digitalization in key processes and roles is the next big step for our customers and stakeholders and the Regional Support Center will drive these changes and challenges across Endress+Hauser Group for our Global Fulfilment and Finance processes.

In May 2020, the Global HR Shared Service Center was established in Kill, Co. Kildare. The team of four began their

Endress+Hauser journey fully remotely, due to Covid restrictions. This Shared Service Center was the first of its kind within the HR organization in Endress+Hauser, set up to coincide with the deployment of a new global HR Software system.

Today, they have grown to a team of eight highly experienced people, all living in the Kildare area.

The team provide HR Masterdata support to employees in 37 countries across the EMEA and Americas region (3,500 employees), with plans to extend this service to an additional 11 countries in Asia from July 2024 (1,000 employees) as the next phase of the deployment is achieved.

Learning Administration support is also provided by this team to 8,600 system users across the entire Endress+Hauser organization. This service is provided in both English and German languages.

The team pride themselves on an efficient and friendly service to their colleagues, using a state-of-the-art integrated HRIS system incorporating different modules such as Masterdata, Recruitment, Learning

In October 2022, the team were honored to receive the prestigious annual Endress+Hauser Support Function award. This is a global accolade recognizing excellence in support tasks.

The team are focused on future expansion while also continuously revising and

improving current systems and processes to ensure that they provide the best service for their colleagues.

The Global Logistics Operations Center (G-LOC), based in Kill began operating in March 2022. A previously outsourced logistic process, it was insourced into an inhouse operation, and Ireland was chosen as the location.

Endress+Hauser has had great success with existing Shared Service Center operations in Ireland. It was an easy decision to locate the Global Logistics Operations Center into the existing location in Kill, Co. Kildare. The high presence of Tech companies and the availability of the multicultural work force, provides an excellent platform to fulfil the company’s language requirements and cultural values.

G-LOC has grown to 25 team members, representing ten nationalities who speak +15 languages, providing customer support excellence and smart solutions to their global customer base.

The Endress+Hauser Global Transportation Network (GTN) is an ecosystem which connects all regions with digital supply chain services. This enables Endress+Hauser to respond to all customer requirements on a global scale.

Effective and standardized processes are supported by smart tools that create the required transparency to manage the supply chain, which helps mitigate any risks. IN THE HOT SEAT

Tell us a bit about yourselves

Lloyd

I grew up in Clane and attended secondary school at Naas CBS, and I still live in Clane to this day. It’s quite fortunate that our offices are located in Millennium Park, as it gives me the luxury of a quick 10-minute commute. Sports have always been a big part of my life, especially football and hurling. I played for Clane GAA for many years and have cherished memories from those days. Another passion of mine is golf, and I’ve been a member of Naas golf club for as long as I can remember. Although I may not be playing as actively as before, I remain connected to the sports community through coaching the youth sections of both Clane GAA and Naas golf club. It’s a wonderful way for me to give back and stay engaged in the sports I love. On top of that, my family and I are enthusiastic supporters of Kildare GAA. We make it a point to attend as many matches as possible, and I was particularly thrilled to see the U20s triumph in the All Ireland this year. Living and working in Kildare is truly a pleasure. It offers the best of both worlds for me. On one hand, there’s a fantastic workfamily life balance that allows me to enjoy quality time with my loved ones. On the other hand, Kildare boasts wonderful amenities and a thriving business community that keeps me engaged and motivated professionally. While

my work does require some travel, which I enjoy, coming back to Kildare always feels like returning home. We have the opportunity to attend various events worldwide, like the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and regularly meet clients and partners across Europe and the US.

Conor

I’m from Galway and live just outside Galway city. In my younger days I played soccer for Galway United in the league of Ireland, NUIG and my local club Salthill Devon. I now channel all of that soccer energy into managing the Under 13/14 girls Salthill Devon soccer teams. They are a fantastic bunch and we have enjoyed lots of success recently with the teams winning local league and cup doubles. Many of the girls are part of the Galway league team, which VEI Global sponsored, that recently won the Interleague National Cup final and that’s up there for me with memorable moments. With our offices based in Naas, I make the most of the new hybrid working environment we all find ourselves in. Like so many of the clients we support with connectivity solutions, I work remotely for some of the week and work at HQ for the remainder. We were recently the 500k premises to install SIRO broadband and this connectivity will play a pivotal role in expanding our business and, more importantly, in elevating the level of service we deliver to

our valued customers in Ireland and around the world. Travelling with Lloyd and the senior management team is always an adventure and we try to fit in some time to see the cities we visit whenever we can.

When did you set up VEI Global Lloyd

We set-up VEI Global in 2010, when we were working for Siemens in Dublin. We both always wanted to work for ourselves and had been thinking of setting up an IT business together for quite some time. We had secure jobs and careers and it was a huge step into the unknown but one we were eager to make. Starting off was very exciting and exhilarating and also more than a little nerve wracking. We thrived on the adrenaline of starting up, in those early days. We were lucky in that we managed to bring together a talented team of people and many of them are still with the company today. This really is the best job I’ve ever had and I genuinely enjoy coming to work every day. Each day brings a whole new challenge and I like the variety of what we do. Getting to work with the global organisations and international brands has been hugely rewarding.

As Lloyd says, setting up VEI 13 years ago was pretty exhilarating. There were sleepless nights and lots of bumps in the road along with way but the journey has been so rewarding and to see the company grow from just an idea in 2010 to where we are today, operating all across the globe has been personally and professionally fulfilling. What’s keeping us really engaged now is the growth potential. We have built up a stellar set of partners and clients across all sectors, from health and education to retail, construction, transport and logistics. The future looks bright and we have the skillset and experience to deliver multisite IT deployment projects across all sectors around the globe.

Can you tell me a bit about the day to day work within VEI?

Lloyd

We specialise in the delivery of IT and Telecoms solutions including; Wi-Fi, Networks, Security, Contact Centre, MS Teams & VoIP, Circuit Connectivity and 5G solutions. Our clients include some of the largest companies and service providers operating in Ireland and across the globe. We have completed digital transformation and network upgrade projects for some of the most recognised brands in the world. Network and connectivity security is core to what we do and we work with some of the largest global carriers in the world delivering projects all over the EU and North America.

No two days in the office are the same and our team of project managers, engineers and support staff are focused on providing the best helpdesk and support service capabilities for our global clients, where all requests are managed day or night. We offer a multi-lingual expert services desk and integration centre for staging, testing and shipping network equipment at our HQ in Naas so that’s always a busy place.

Recruitment is very competitive how do you retain and attract employees?

Conor

As the global recruitment market is highly competitive at the moment, retaining employees and recruiting new team members is more important than ever. From the start, we have always tried to be an employeefocused company. As employees ourselves, in our previous lives, we know how important it is for people to feel valued and supported. Our clients can only be happy and served well if our team are, so the culture of the company is essential. Most of our employees live locally in the Naas and Kildare areas. We have employed a great pool of local talent that don’t necessarily want to commute to Dublin. We work with third level colleges such as the School of Engineering in Tallaght to employ Telecommunications and Data Network Engineering apprentices. We have tried to create a fun working environment, focused on building strong relationships, working hard and a determination to inspire the best in ourselves and our team.

We offer flexible working hours and remote working options. We do like to get the whole team together as much as possible, so we can see one another face to face and connect. Thankfully, we have managed to retain many of our existing team who started with us 13 years ago and have expanded in all key areas over the last number of years. We are currently in another recruitment drive with a variety of open positions.

Any interesting projects coming up?

Lloyd

We are very excited about our current project with The European Parliament. This is a project our team worked hard to win, continue to work hard to deliver and one we are very proud of. The project involves implementing a WAAS (Wi-Fi as a Service) solution covering

an extensive network across 27 countries and 50 sites. We have experience working on large multi-site project rollouts across the globe and this helped us in our bid with the European Parliament. We also work with county councils across Ireland and with state bodies such as the Health and Safety Authority. Rolling our several key WiFi4Eu projects in recent years, was particularly rewarding especially when it came to connecting the remote islands off the coast of Ireland.

In November, last year we announced we had achieved 5G for Enterprise Branch Specialisation from Cradlepoint, the global leader in cloud-delivered LTE and 5G wireless network edge solutions. We are exceptionally proud to be Cradlepoint’s first certified 5G partner in Ireland, which showcases our commitment to using the best-of-breed technology as part of our service stack, as well as laying the path to 5G for businesses.

How long have you been a member of the chamber and has it helped with your growth?

Conor

The Kildare Chamber has been truly pivotal for VEI since we joined back in 2010. Working with the Chamber and its members and participating in all it offers has brought many benefits to our business. In the early days, some of our first key contracts were awarded from contacts we had developed through membership of the Chamber. It has helped us to develop connections across a diverse network of businesses and the regular networking events, annual awards and the trip to Boston have all been so important to us and helped us to grow our business to where we find ourselves today.

This year we are delighted to be sponsoring the Chamber’s Summer Social Evening at Naas Racecourse in June which is set to be a sellout and we look forward to the annual awards ceremony later this year.

Killashee Hotel

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role in Killashee Hotel

I reside from our neighbouring county Laois where I live with my wife Eimear and four Children, I was delighted to join FBD Hotels & Resorts in early 2019 taken on the role of General Manager of The Heritage, Killenard in Laois.

When I joined the team at Killashee in June 2022, it was the beginning of an exciting new era for the hotel. FBD Hotels & Resorts had bought the hotel in April and the refurbishment plan was under way. With over €3m being invested to date and a further €2m by the end of 2024, the hotel has been refurbished to the highest standard. For me the guest experience is the key priority and to achieve this we need an excellent team of people to manage this .We have 350 staff working in the hotel and out of that 100 are full-time. As well as the customer journey, we are investing in the staff journey to ensure good career opportunities.

Overall, as General Manager of Killashee Hotel , I would be

responsible for creating a positive and welcoming environment for guests and staff, driving operational efficiency, maximizing revenue, and ensuring the long-term success and growth of the hotel.

What makes Killashee Hotel different to other Hotel destinations in Kildare?

Killashee is an iconic Irish property, primely located on a 55 acres estate of gardens and woodlands outside Naas. This landmark four-star hotel has built a reputation as a leading destination for the leisure, corporate and wedding guests alike.

The hotel has undergone an extensive refurbishment, surpassing industry standards and setting a new benchmark for excellence. From the finest materials to the latest technology and design in achieving the utmost level of quality. With attention to every detail and a commitment to perfection, the hotel now stands as a testament to refined elegance and exceptional standards.

28 ISSUE 10 - July 2023
Ger Alley GM of Killashee Hotel

It is home to two beautiful restaurants, The Pippin Tree which overlooks the stunning gardens and the always popular casual dining restaurant, Oak & Anvil. Our Head Chef Phillip Gleeson has designed an elevated culinary experience for both restaurants, featuring the very best of local and seasonal produce.

Killashee is recognised for its warm hospitable service, and the hotel is equally appealing to couples, friends and families, who want to enjoy the different areas and activities on offer. These include The Spa and Hydrotherapy Suite, the leisure centre with its 25 metres pool, the grounds with woodland walks, gardens and its own playground with a zipline.

Our newly refurbished award-winning Spa, is truly a haven of tranquillity, where the stresses of everyday life are left behind as soon as you step in the door. To mirror the gorgeous natural surroundings of our wonderful estate. In our Spa we offer our Hydrotherapy suite with state of the are features and one of the biggest in the country.

Killashee is located close to three racecourses, the historic national visitor attractions and only 15 minutes from Newbridge Silver and Kildare Village.

What can we expect from Killashee Hotel over the next few years?

We will continue to invest into upgrading the facilities and these include Conference Suites. Killashee has established itself as an industry leader in the conferences and events sector working with a portfolio of leading international and local companies. The conference facilities at Killashee including conference rooms, meeting spaces and breakout rooms have been upgraded to feature new contemporary furnishings, AV systems, built in screens, LCD Projectors, Nespresso coffee machines and high speed WIFI. On the first floor, there are five meeting rooms centred around the relaxing Larkspur Lounge, ideal for coffee breaks, group discussions and networking. Naturally lit with daylight, these meeting rooms are equipped with AV, screens, stationery and Nespresso coffee machines.

Refurbishment of The Lockewood Suite, the main conference space with its own private reception, that can cater for 600 theatre style or 350 classroom style, will be completed by early August.

Our spa refurbishment has been thoughtfully designed to captivate and attract new clientele, setting the stage for an unforgettable wellness experience. Every detail of the renovation has been carefully considered to create an oasis of serenity and rejuvenation that appeals to discerning individuals seeking a retreat from their busy lives.

One exciting key project is a new addition to our accommodation as earlier this year, The Bower guest house across the road from the hotel was purchased. The refurbishment of this nine bedroom house on 4 acres is due to start on this very shortly. This is a will become a venue that can be booked by corporates, wedding parties or private groups.

What are the main challenges facing the industry currently?

The hospitality industry certainly has changed. Guest expectations have risen and hotels have had to work hard to meet and even exceed these standards

Sustainability is key and going green is an important part of our policies and the hotel has a separate green budget. Two combined heat and power (CHP) units are going into the property and it is also currently being assessed for solar panels. There are plans to utilise the expansive grounds for food produce in the future too.

I truly believe our people are hugely resilient in Killashee and throughout our industry.

We aim to cultivate perseverance to navigate challenges effectively by maintaining a positive mindset, stay adaptable, and view setbacks as learning opportunities. I aim to embrace a growth mindset that believes in the team’s ability to learn and improve.

We measure our customers and employees satisfaction regularly to further improve our service level to our people from our people.

This proactive approach is driven by the leadership of our CEO Mr David Kelly, a native from Kildare with a inspiring passion for hospitality.
