IN THE HOT SEAT
Pat Sutton, Area Managing Partner for Xeinadin
Q1) Pat, tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am the Area Managing Partner for Xeinadin in Kildare. I was born and raised in a farming family in New Ross, Co. Wexford. My late father Jim was a well known cattle dealer in the area. I now live in The Curragh, Co. Kildare with my wife Mary and our 3 college going children.
After completing college in Dublin and qualifying as a Chartered Certified Accountant, I worked for a number of mid-sized accountancy practices to gain valuable experience. In 1994, I set up O’Kelly Sutton, Accountants, Auditors & Strategic Business Advisors, with business partner Paul O’Kelly. Paul was a management consultant at the time and I saw an opportunity to provide commercial business advisory services to clients as part of an accountancy practice. This approach allowed us to provide comprehensive, tailored solutions to our clients, which became the cornerstone of the practice’s reputation and success.
Until recently I was Treasurer of our local GAA Club Suncroft, a position I held for over for 15 years. In our house it’s Kildare for the football and Wexford for the hurling! I like to keep active and cycle with the local Bush Cycling Club most Sundays, it’s a great way to keep in contact with the local community and stay reasonably fit.
Q2) Recently, your business has undergone a number of changes, can you tell our readers about O’Kelly Sutton and Xeinadin?
In 2019 we were approached about getting involved with a group of likeminded, progressive accountancy practices. Myself and my business partner Patrick O’Rourke, carried out extensive analysis of the future direction of the accountancy profession. We recognised
significant advantages for our clients if we could tap into the pool of expertise through a larger group, while still keeping the personalised service ethos of a small practice. It culminated with an agreement in 2022 to form the accountancy, audit and advisory group Xeinadin. We were delighted when two other highly regarded firms in Kildare, Ken Herbert & Co, and Mulhern & Co., also decided to join Xeinadin. It is becoming increasingly difficult for small, standalone accountancy practices to cater for all clients’ needs in a complex business world. Artificial Intelligence is evolving very rapidly and changing the way business is done. Xeinadin are at the forefront of developing suitable AI solutions for small to medium sized businesses, which will benefit our clients now and into the future.
Since 2022 we have operated within Xeinadin and last year both O’Kelly Sutton and Ken Herbert & Co. formally rebranded as Xeinadin. Both practices moved into a new premises across from Kildare Village which will cater for our long term expansion plans.
Xeinadin’s commitment to collaboration has been fundamental to our strategic aims in Ireland. Xeinadin strongly believes and therefore invests in the principles of a partner powered and people led strategy, genuinely believing that together, we are greater than the sum of our individual parts. This resonates so well with our practices, so that joining Xeinadin has been a very natural and exciting next step for us.
Our greatest asset is the talent within our team. We are now one of the largest accountancy practices in Kildare and can provide a level of service rarely available from a local practice.
Our senior leadership team, led by myself as Area Managing Partner, includes Patrick
O’Rourke, Tax Partner, who joined O’Kelly Sutton in 2006 after training with KPMG and PwC. Patrick advises high-net-worth individuals on wealth creation, protection, and efficient tax structures. Ken Herbert continues to focus on client development, while Lisa Lokasto has joined as Director, bringing expertise as a Chartered Accountant and Tax Advisor, with a focus on strategic tax planning, managing change, and delivering tailored business advisory services.
Our senior leadership team is supported by highly experienced managers including Olivia Dunne, Jennifer Larkin, and Diarmuid Kennelly, who are each very experienced and bring in-depth knowledge across a wide range of industries. Recent appointments and promotions include Donal Lycett as Senior Manager to our audit team, Karen O’Brien as Business Support Manager, and Liz Carroll as Assistant Manager. We are constantly growing and it is a very exciting time to be involved in the group.

Q3) What is next for the group, as you look to 2025?
We have a busy schedule of events planned for 2025, the first one being a very important seminar to be held in our new offices in March 2025 ‘succession or sale of the family businesses’. Choosing between selling or succession requires a thorough examination of your business’s current state, your personal aspirations, business strategy and the general economic climate. Whilst this seminar is specifically tailored to our clients, we are happy to meet businesses wishing to find out more about Xeinadin and its service offering.
The merger of O’Kelly Sutton and Ken Herbert & Co. within the new Xeinadin Kildare office is something to really be excited for in 2025.
With over 35 professionals currently located at its new premises, the office is currently undertaking a major expansion with plans to double its headcount over the next two years in Kildare. We have a fantastic team working with us servicing our valued and loyal client base. We have some staff with us for over 20 years and some clients for nearly 30 years and they have all followed us into the next phase of our growth journey with Xeinadin.
For our clients in 2025, there is a tremendous opportunity to tap into the wider Xeinadin service offering, and this will have a real benefit to them both from business growth and tax planning perspective. In June last year Xeinadin announced it would earmark €40 million for investment into Ireland over 18 months as it expands its footprint here with a core focus on taxation and business advisory services and audit for SMEs across Ireland. The wider brand is continuing to grow and employs over 500 people in Ireland now.
Over the coming weeks the third Kildare Xeinadin based firm Mulhern & Co. will move into the Xeinadin Kildare Town office from their current Naas base. Mulhern & Co. a highly respected practice specialising in back office accounting, bookkeeping and tax services to their small and medium sized family business clients. After 35 years based in Naas, Billy Mulhern and his team are really looking forward to the next part of their journey with Xeinadin.
Behind the scenes we are very busy implementing the latest technology across the organisation to support our team and clients, this is a continuous and ongoing process. Being a part of Xeinadin is really beneficial in this regard as it provides us with the latest thinking in addition to the practical support in implementation.
Q4) To what extent is the changing skill set of accountants driving mergers like this?
Theres no doubt running a business in 2025 is more challenging than ever. Clients now require advice and direction on so many aspects in running of their business including finance & accounting operations, HR, technology, financial planning, strategy, management, and transaction advisory.
The role of accountants has changed from routine compliance work (e.g., filing tax returns and audits) to providing strategic advice and business insights. Technology is changing how we work, automating many of the routine accounting tasks, bookkeeping and reporting. As a result, accountants need

skills in technology integration, data analysis, and cybersecurity. Larger practices resulting from mergers are simply better resourced to invest in the latest tools and provide the necessary training for staff. For small practices, this would be just cost prohibitive.
Xeinadin is making substantial investments in artificial intelligence because this has to be embraced as the transformative tool it is. AI has the potential to completely change how accountants work by automating repetitive tasks, enhancing data accuracy, and providing deeper insights through real time reporting. This will reduce the administrative burden and free up valuable time for both our team and our clients so we can focus on what really matters - strategic business planning and decision-making.
Mergers enable practices to pool specialised expertise and access knowledge on highly technical areas or niche industries that otherwise wouldn’t be available. No matter how unusual or complex a client issue – there is always someone within the Xeinadin network that has the proven solution.
In Kildare we have growing teams under a number of service categories including audit, tax planning, international tax, management accounting, payroll, cloud accounting & bookkeeping, corporate finance. We are certified platinum partners for a number of cloud accounting software including SAGE, Xero and Bright.
Our business clients are across most sectors including haulage, construction, technology, services, manufacturing, wholesale, retail, agri etc The not-for-profit and charity client sectors are coming under greater scrutiny to improve their financial reporting with increasing corporate governance obligations.
Xeinadin is well-equipped to assist and guide businesses in understanding their responsibilities and obligations under the
Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which was incorporated into Irish law in July 2024. This is particularly crucial for small businesses, many of which remain unaware of the changing requirements they will need to address in the coming years.
Our international tax advisors are working with a sizable body of International business clients and businesses doing business abroad. It important that we provide up to date guidance for resident and non-resident and the best options for them be it agency, branch, or subsidiary.
One of our clients Ger Hyland of Hyland Transport Group who is President of the Irish Road Haulage Association, said to us recently “we need you to keep us on the right path, tell us what we need to know, and highlight the best practices & structures we should have in place”. I think this very nicely sums up what we’re about.
Q5) As a partner of County Kildare Chamber, how has this benefited your business over the years?
I have found County Kildare Chamber to be a valuable partner for our business over the last 15 years. I was on the County Kildare Chamber executive committee since 2016 and prior to that I was part of the Newbridge Chamber executive committee before it amalgamated with County Kildare Chamber. It was a huge achievement at the time to create a one county chamber which has been a tremendous success. Allan Shine did great work building a very successful Chamber and now Sinead Ronan and her team are busy taking the Chamber to the next level.
Being part of the Chamber has been really beneficial to our business in promoting it around the county, developing a network and becoming part of the business community.
For several years O’Kelly Sutton sponsored an award category at the Kildare Chamber Annual Business Awards, we believe the awards are an important way of recognising the great work done by businesses of all sizes in Kildare. We intend to continue our partnership with County Kildare Chamber under the Xeinadin the brand over the coming years.
You can’t operate in business in isolation from the local community and County Kildare Chamber is the perfect partner to help any business market themselves and get their name out there.

Chamber Corporate Partners Dinner at Dáil Éireann 2024
Claire Davey, Tax Director at KPMG Addresses Post-Budget Corporate Dinner at Leinster House
In a momentous Chamber-led gathering at Leinster House following Budget 2025 announcements, Claire Davey, Tax Director at KPMG Ireland and board member of County Kildare Chamber, delivered an insightful address on the Budget’s implications for Kildare’s business community. The event, attended by cabinet members, Oireachtas representatives, and local business leaders, highlighted Kildare’s pivotal role in Ireland’s economic future.
“Kildare has consistently proven itself to be a key innovative contributor to Ireland’s economic success,” Davey emphasised. With the county’s population approaching 250,000 and projected growth of 45,000 by 2030, the timing of several budget measures appears particularly significant for Kildare’s development.
The headline €3 billion infrastructure investment announced in the Budget could be transformative for the county. “This investment could be a game-changer for Kildare, leading to improved public services, housing, and education to underpin our rapidly growing population,” Davey noted.

Housing received particular attention, with an additional €1.25 billion allocated to the Land Development Agency and the extension of the Help to Buy scheme until 2029. These measures directly address Kildare’s housing challenges while supporting expanding communities and workforce needs.
Kildare’s diverse business landscape stands to benefit significantly from various initiatives. The county’s unique mix of multinational tech giants, cutting-edge startups, world-renowned equine industry a cornerstone of our heritage, advanced manufacturing facilities, and thriving SMEs positions it perfectly to leverage new opportunities.

Small and medium enterprises, described as “the true engine of our economy,” received particular focus. Enhanced supports include improvements to the Employment Investment Incentive scheme and Start-Up Relief for Entrepreneurs. The increased CGT relief lifetime limit of €10 million for angel investors could significantly boost investment in Kildare’s thriving tech and start-up scene.
Looking to the future, sustainability features prominently in the government’s priorities. A substantial €16 billion investment in the “Future of Ireland Fund” and “Infrastructure, Climate and Nature Fund” aligns with Kildare’s green ambitions and commitment to sustainable development.
“We have the talent, industry diversity, and now additional resources to address challenges, seize new opportunities, and enhance our economic position,” Davey stated. “For Kildare, this could mean increased foreign direct investment, expanded opportunities for local businesses to grow internationally, and an even more favourable environment for our existing multinational companies.” The address concluded with a call for collaboration between government, businesses, and community organisations. “Together, we can and will achieve great things,” Davey emphasised, highlighting the importance of unified effort in realising Kildare’s economic potential.
The event, sponsored by KPMG Ireland, demonstrated the strong partnership between government, business, and community organisations such as the Chamber in shaping Kildare’s economic future. As Budget 2025’s measures begin to take effect, Kildare appears well-positioned to capitalise on new opportunities while addressing the challenges of rapid growth and development.

Cancer Fund for Children
Cancer Fund for Children are an all-island charity providing vital services to children and young people living with cancer. Each year, an average of 369 children, adolescents and young adults, aged 0-24, are diagnosed with cancer in Ireland. There are also a significant number of siblings and parents/ guardians impacted by cancer, alongside extended family members and friends. Cancer Fund for Children understand the devastating impact a childhood cancer diagnosis can have, and that beyond essential clinical care, there is a family life that needs to be restored.
At Cancer Fund for Children, we connect, empower and strengthen children, young people and their families to feel better equipped to cope with the emotional impact of cancer. Our ambition is that every child, adolescent and young adult diagnosed with cancer receives the right emotional support at the right time, regardless of where they live. Our team
of Cancer Support Specialists provide emotional, social and therapeutic support to children living with a cancer diagnosis, as well as their parents and siblings. This service is provided in hospital, at home, in the community and at our short-break therapeutic centre, Daisy Lodge.
Hospital Support
We provide in-hospital support to diagnosed children and their families through our Cancer Support Specialist and Youth Support Worker, both based on St. John’s Ward in Crumlin Children’s Hospital. They work as part of the wider hospital team to ensure all families are aware and have access to the support services available to them.
Our Youth Support Worker ensures that age-specific support is in place for 13–24-year-old patients while they are treated in hospital.
The next step in our national support plan is to recruit Youth Support Workers who will be based at St James Hospital, Cork University Hospital and Galway University Hospital.
Community Support
Our dedicated team of Cancer Support Specialists meet families from point of diagnosis in their home and community. The team develop strong, meaningful relationships in order to provide direct individual support for the family. This support helps families understand the impact of cancer and how they can better cope going forward. Our community-based Cancer Support Specialists provide vital services to diagnosed children and young people across all 32 counties on the island of Ireland.
Daisy Lodge
Every year, we provide therapeutic short breaks at Daisy Lodge in Newcastle, Co. Down to approximately 65 families from Ireland. With Daisy Lodge operating at full capacity, we plan to build a second therapeutic centre near Cong, Co. Mayo. This second facility will allow us to increase the number of family members we accommodate from 1,800 to 4,000, more than doubling our current figures.

Infinity Hot Yoga
Infinity Hot Yoga is a 4,100 square foot fitness facility located in Maynooth Business Campus, just off the M4 at junction 7. Here we teach group hot yoga classes in a purpose built 35-person studio, heated by infrared to 40˚. The heat warms the soft tissue of the body which allows easier movement. The business is mainly member based with clients on one of a number of plans depending on how often they practice with us. Some of our members practice daily. We are also always happy to accept drop ins.
The company was set up in Apr 2016 by myself, Mitch Bohan and my wife Bridget Lawlor. We both served in the Defence Forces for many years and when we left, we decided to turn our interests in fitness generally, and hot yoga specifically, into a business. Bridget went off to the USA to qualify and I went to Limerick University to complete a degree in Exercise and Health Fitness. Once suitably qualified in hot yoga and fitness facility management we incorporated Infinity Hot Yoga Limited. We bought out an existing studio in Unit K4 Maynooth Business Campus and commenced trading.
Over the following nine years we have done two major refits, upgrading the heating system for the studio and extending the shower and changing facilities. The studio is at the heart of a thriving community of customers who take time out of the busy schedules to invest in themselves.

In addition to individual members practicing hot yoga at the studio we do private corporate classes for many businesses based in Kildare and Dublin. Staff members get to experience something different from their usual routine with their colleagues.
The company has survived many challenges in its nine years, the biggest being pandemic lockdowns. We moved online during that period and a large number of clients stayed with us. As soon as we were able to reopen the physical studio, we were busier than ever.
We have been members of the Kildare Chamber nearly as long as we have been in business having joined three months after we opened our doors. The support of the Chamber and fellow members has proven to be invaluable to us as started our business and will be long into the future.

At County Kildare Chamber, we understand the vital role policy and advocacy play in creating a business environment where our members can thrive. As we move through 2025, our commitment to representing the interests of our members at local, national and international levels remains stronger than ever.
Shaping Policy for a Competitive Future
The Chamber continues to be a strong voice for business in Kildare, engaging with policymakers to address the challenges and opportunities that matter most to our members. Key areas of focus this year include advocating for improved infrastructure, such as transportation and energy connectivity, to support economic growth. Additionally, we are working with government stakeholders to streamline regulatory processes that impact businesses, ensuring that Kildare remains an attractive location for investment and innovation.
Sustainability and Green Growth
Sustainability is at the forefront of our policy agenda. We’re actively collaborating with businesses and government to promote green initiatives, including access to funding for renewable energy projects, support for SMEs transitioning to sustainable practices and the development of a countywide strategy to meet Ireland’s climate targets.
International Trade and Investment
Through our work to expand our international footprint, the Chamber is opening doors for businesses in Kildare to establish connections in key international markets, including the United States. Our advocacy efforts focus on securing funding and partnerships to strengthen these initiatives, ensuring local businesses can access the global opportunities they need to expand and prosper.
Championing Local Business Needs
Locally, the Chamber is engaging with Kildare County
Council and other stakeholders to address pressing issues such as town centre revitalisation, workforce development and housing affordability. By fostering dialogue and offering practical solutions, we aim to create an environment where businesses can succeed and employees can thrive.
Formation of Subcommittees
To strengthen our advocacy efforts and provide a more focused approach, the Chamber is forming dedicated subcommittees across key policy areas. These subcommittees will bring together business leaders, industry experts and stakeholders to tackle specific issues, from infrastructure development to sustainability, workforce needs and international trade. This collaborative approach ensures that we have the expertise and perspectives needed to deliver meaningful outcomes.
We encourage members interested in contributing to these subcommittees to reach out to the Chamber team. Your insights and expertise are invaluable in shaping the policies and initiatives that will benefit our business community.
Your Voice Matters
Our advocacy efforts are guided by the insights and priorities of our members. We encourage all businesses to share their feedback and participate in policy discussions, ensuring that the collective voice of Kildare’s business community is heard loud and clear.
As we continue this work, we remain committed to driving positive change for our members. By working together, we can influence the policies that shape our county and create a sustainable and prosperous future for all.
For more information on our policy and advocacy work, or to get involved in a subcommittee, contact the Chamber team.

Cancer Fund for Children

Cancer Fund for Children are an all-island charity providing emotional, social and therapeutic support to children living with cancer, as well as their parents and siblings.
Each week, across the island of Ireland, up to 10 children and young people (aged 0-24) are diagnosed with cancer. Cancer Fund for Children understands the devastating impact this diagnosis can have on the whole family, and that beyond essential medical care, many families need social and emotional support.
Our dedicated team of Cancer Support Specialists deliver flexible and personalised support to young people and their families. This can take place at home, in hospital, in the community and at our short-break therapeutic centre, Daisy Lodge in Co. Down.
Plans are also underway for a second Daisy Lodge centre on the shores of Lough Corrib in Cong, Co. Mayo, due to the increasing demands for our services.
