This is a completely free magazine created out of the need to inform so that we can get to exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and more, rather than hearing about events after they have taken place.
I encourage anyone with a visual arts event to get in contact with me at corriescott@gmail.com and I will add a free page for your exhibition, classes, workshops, talks etc.
Let’s get the arts out there!
Please, pass this magazine on to others and so help the creative side of Barbados get all the exposure possible.

The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.
The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.
I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.
I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.
I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.
Thank you for understanding.

“The exhibition is an aspirational gathering – a space to connect with the incredible wonder of the African diaspora in the Caribbean and, through it, the deepest parts of ourselves and communities. We are called to witness their offerings, which give expressive, full-bodied form to our dreams, memories, philosophical concepts and psychological states.”

Congratulations Jaryd Niles- Morris Barbados Today News. Link https://bit.ly/4qtVhqw
“Next June, Barbadian artist Jaryd Niles Morris will travel to one of the most remote frontiers in the world – the Arctic Circle – as part of an international artist residency requiring participants to create work that is Arctic-focused and globally relevant.
At the centre of the Arctic work is the creation of a new cultural character: a modern figure rooted in Caribbean values, environmental consciousness and collective responsibility. Rather than relying on policy alone, the character is meant to embed awareness into culture.
“There are things that we hold dear, like our beaches and our environment. So the idea is to create a character that will encapsulate these ideas of activism, the ocean, and bring it to the forefront as part of our culture,” he explains. “The idea is to introduce conservation within your everyday life.”

Where are the Tours?
The tours will be held throughout Barbados….visit artists in many parishes.
What is an artist open studio tour?
A studio tour is a place where someone makes art, – it can be a room, garage, shed/workshop, barn or other type of space –clean or messy, funky or classic. Some artists will be creating art when you visit and others combine studio spaces to share their artwork with the public. This is an opportunity to experience a variety of art from painting to jewellery, from woodwork to pottery. There is no cost to attend the tour and no tickets are required. It is not necessary to make an appointment. Participating studios are open from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM.
How does a self-guided tour work?
It’s simple, get a free map from our website or our brochure, visit the artist studios and enjoy these unique creative spaces. You can download a copy of the map from the website. Brochures include brief artist info, addresses, and accessibility. Brochures will be available in September.
How should I plan my tour?
The names and addresses of studios are available on our website after September 1, 2025 as well as on the map available on our website for download. You can also pick up a brochure at tourist information or other businesses in Barbados.
We encourage you to plan your route to ensure you will have time to visit all of the artists you would like to visit.
Each studio will have an Artist Studio Tours Barbados sign on display outside of their studio.
Participating artists have paid for the opportunity to share their art with you. You will find interesting and unique works of art in the studios. Many artists will have original artwork available for purchase during the event – if you see something you like be sure to ask. I am an artist, art educator and passionate photographer. I was born in Berlin, Germany. I studied Fine Arts/Photography at the University of Art in Leipzig and worked as a freelance photographer and as a photo-editor for a daily newspaper in Berlin, Germany. About 30 years ago, I made beautiful Barbados my home, and have worked as the art teacher of the Codrington School, the International School of Barbados, for the last 19 years. I have also run many art workshops and art-and-craft camps for children, and have created large 3-dimensional artworks on plywood for children to be used in occupational therapy. In the late 90ies until 2000, I ran a small art gallery and art-and-craftshop in Baystreet. I am the author of Picture Science, Using Digital Photography to Teach Young Children (Redleaf Press, 2007, USA). In 2013 I received the ECIS Award for the Promotion of International Education. I am an active participant and member of the Barbados Photographic Society. Now retired, I have the time to focus on my own creative endeavors and to actively follow my life-long interest in Fine Art Photography and Painting. I especially love Black-and-White Photography, but I also love to draw and to paint with watercolours or acrylics on canvas. I love to explore the endless opportunities of mixing and combining different media, including the use of objects. I am also very interested in Intuitive Painting and strongly believe in the healing powers of art.

LAURA MADDISON

(246) 235-7492

Laura Maddison is a trained jeweller and silversmith who began her career designing collections for leading brands in the UK and Australia. While this gave her a strong commercial grounding and insight into production at scale, she soon gravitated towards a slower, more intentional way of making — creating meaningful pieces for individuals who value craftsmanship and connection.
Now based in Barbados, Laura works by hand using traditional metalsmithing techniques and tools she often designs herself. Her pieces range from fine silver and gold jewellery to larger-scale functional art: chandeliers, ornamental downspouts, sculptural wall hooks and bespoke barware, all crafted with care using sustainable methods.
Laura draws inspiration from the island’s botanical life, both on land and in the ocean. Her work celebrates the curves, movement and texture of natural forms to create designs that feel light, alive and full of character.

With an unwavering passion for all things creative for most of her life along with a sharp eye for exquisite design, Joy-Ann Carter has been quickly building her name in the area of high-end wooden handbags and jewellery made from various species of wood grown in her home island of Barbados. Joy-Ann is the founder and visionary behind the CAHLONG brand, a luxury accessories brand that melds artistry with sophistication to create wooden statement piece handbags and jewellery that have already become collectors’ items.
Joy-Ann also transforms locally grown Barbadian wood into stunning chandeliers and light fixtures that are as functional as they are artistic. With a creative eye and meticulous attention to detail, she infuses each piece with movement and character, blending artistic energy with practical design to create truly unique lighting.
Joy-Ann’s talents extend beyond accessories and lighting into sculpting expressive wooden forms and carving beautifully functional utensils. Working with various locally grown woods, Joy-Ann pays close attention to the unique grains and striations within the wood, bringing each creation to life— whether a graceful sculpture, hand-carved spoon or statement servingware. Her meticulous approach ensures that every item tells its own story in wood, celebrating both its artistic beauty and timeless functionality.

I am a creative person who is passionate about all forms of art, from which I draw great pleasure and inspiration. My work has evolved through experimentation and the exploration of colour, texture, and pattern. I am always on a journey of discovery, seeking to connect these elements in my paintings. I often work from my imagination, which allows me the freedom to express myself without having a specific outcome in mind or being restricted to a particular style. I love to interpret themes such as nature, animals, and portraits in my unique way, exploring different methods to convey feelings and emotions.

Adriana Seymour, originally from Romania, moved to Barbados 9 years ago. I started discovering how to work with all different types of upcycle paper.I did research on how to transform the paper into items that can be worn or used in everyday life. I enjoy creating handbags, jewelry, baskets, Christmas decorations and home decor out of paper. I incorporate acrylic paint and varnish to make all the items water resistant.

Ashleigh Williams is a Barbadian fine artist and illustrator, whose mixed-media pieces are composed of ink, watercolour and gouache. She acquired her degree in visual arts from the Barbados Community College.
Her delicate cross-hatching draws inspiration from the illustrations in the books of her childhood. Her portraits of women in nature express vulnerability, strength and emotional depth through the exploration of storytelling.
Ashleigh continues to inform her practice by advancing her knowledge and skill of pen-and-ink techniques while also diving into how ink has been used throughout history and across many cultures. As she refines her smaller works, she is also pushing the limits of her medium and narration by incorporating larger scales with added complexity.

MARIA STANFORD

Born and raised in Barbados, I have been keen on art from my days at The Christ Church Foundation School. I then pursued Fine Arts at The Barbados Community College; after that, I studied Interior Design at the International Fine Arts College in Miami, Florida. In 2014/15, a deep interest in visual arts began to blossom and then flourish when I attended the National Cultural Foundation’s En Plein Air Workshops which were tutored by Barbadian master artists, resulting in my debut show in 2016.
My love of outdoor painting serves as a vehicle to propel my artistic interest and enthusiasm for the visual arts. Visiting various landscapes throughout the island from River Bay in St Lucy in the north to Nelson Street in the city capital of Bridgetown even to East Point Lighthouse has allowed me to come into my own expressionistic style. My portfolio contains aerial views, seascapes, wildflower super-blooms, turtles, and a “Bodega Series” of still lifes that depict ingredients for favourite recipes.
Awards: Design South Magazine. BIMEX Best in Home Show. BIMEX Best in Use of Products (Home Show). NIFCA Bronze 2017. NIFCA Silver and Bronze 2024
Shows: Artists Studio Tours 2020–2024; Barbados Arts Council; The Crane Art Gallery; Drift Ocean Lounge; Round House; BIBA Charity Group Show; Argentine Embassy; Andromeda Gardens; Artsplash; Caribbean Gallery of Art; Senses Marche and more.

My name is Michelle Greaves, and I’m married with two children. I worked in the banking profession for 24 years until November 2006, before becoming a fulltime homemaker and enjoying the therapeutic release I receive from my pottery passion.
My interest in pottery first started in April 2002, when I received a gift of pottery classes from my sister Kelley. Under the watchful eye of Gloria Chung at the Barbados Community College, I was encouraged to release whatever hidden talent I may have. It is so satisfying to be a part of the process which takes a ball of raw clay and turns it into a work of art, or even a functional piece. Much of my inspiration comes from nature. I am intrigued by contrasts, either in textures or colours. I pour much of my personality into my work, so when you buy a piece from Michelle’s Clay Gallery, you have a part of me.
I have showcased my work locally at the Museum’s Craft Fair, Holders’ Season, Cariba Restaurant in St. James, the Barbados Horticultural Society Flower Show (silver medal awarded in 2012), BMEX, the Repeat Visitor Receptions held at Ilaro Court, Bridgetown Market, Holetown Festival, Limegrove Craft Fairs, ATSB 2020, 2024 and 2025, the Crop-Over Visual Arts Exhibition, Carifesta 2017 and regionally at Carifesta 2013 held in Suriname.

Catharine Cummins is a Barbadian born in Jamaica. For a while she was self employed as a printed textile designer for the US swimwear market.
Having spent those years being constrained to a strict design format she shrugged off that title and got busy painting anything she wanted to including a snowcone cart, a surfboard, 2 lifesized fiberglass cows, 2 mini-buses and a portrait of a garden in France. Recently she got obsessed with collecting vintage ceramic shards that she finds in the very dirt of Barbados while walking in St Joseph and in the Garrison area over the past 17 years. She took these broken bits of the past and created brand new artwork that’s also already 300 years old.

GAIL RILEY
instagram.com/touchedbyfirebarbados
(246) 832-2622
Gail Riley has been making ceramics since 2018. She hand builds her work using the coiling and pinching techniques, occasionally using found objects as moulds. She works with local clays, primarily earthenware, foraging for lesser-known native clays and other materials to include in her work.
Gail’s work explores the innate qualities of clay, including the possibilities offered by its plasticity. The incorporation of foraged materials into some of the clays creates highly textured clay bodies and surfaces, some rich with the warm colours of fired mudstones and ochres. Some work is partially glazed, juxtaposing a glassy glazed surface with a raw, textured clay body. Slip, a mixture of clay and water, is applied to some pieces, either as a liquid or as a thick cream.
Her work is a celebration of clay in its many forms.

ADRIAN BURNETT

facebook.com/dabudzman
(246) 830-9169

Adrian Burnett is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is deeply rooted in environmental consciousness, the transformative power of upcycling, and the complexity of human experience. Passionate about texture, form, and pattern, he creates bold mixed-media pieces using found and repurposed materials—breathing new life into the discarded and overlooked. His work reflects a deep reverence for nature, often drawing from organic textures, weathered surfaces, and natural decay to explore the ongoing dialogue between humanity and the environment.
Beyond the environmental, Adrian’s art also delves into the duality of life and the human condition, engaging with themes of gender, anatomy, and identity. Through abstract and symbolic representation, he examines the biological and emotional dimensions of both the female and male forms, exploring the contrasts, connections, and fluidities between them. His pieces become layered narratives—simultaneously raw and refined—that honour both the physical and metaphysical aspects of being. With a keen eye for overlooked detail and a love for the tactile, Adrian’s work challenges viewers to see the world—and themselves—with fresh curiosity and depth.

INGRID KNAPP

I am a marine biologist, ceramicist, and environmental artist whose work blends scientific insight with creative expression. I earned my PhD in marine biology from Victoria University of Wellington, researching sponge ecology at the remote Palmyra Atoll. After completing my doctorate, I moved to Hawai‘i for a postdoctoral fellowship focused on coral restoration and reef ecology. It was there, eight years ago, that I first discovered ceramics—a practice that has since become a vital part of my life. I am a hand-builder who primarily enjoys sculpting, often inspired by the intricate forms, textures, and rhythms of the ocean—especially overlooked creatures often seen as less beautiful. I like all my pieces to spark joy, whether conveying a message or simply celebrating beauty. Now based in Barbados, I explore the meeting point between art and science, creating work that invites curiosity, fosters appreciation, and encourages care for our oceans.

JAMILAABENA HAYNES
www.jamilaabena.com
instagram.com/jamila_abena
(246) 838-0049

Trained as an architect, Jamila discovered a passion for pottery amidst the daily rhythm of office life. Working primarily with terracotta and mixed clays, her hand-built forms celebrate the tactile and visual contrasts of unglazed ceramic surfaces. She approaches ceramics as a meditative, intuitive collaboration with clay; one that honours beauty in imperfection, materiality, and soulful expression. Her work features visible seams, layers, and asymmetries that reflect her multi-passionate journey, integrating her roles as architect, artist, and creative entrepreneur. Through each piece, she explores stillness, mindfulness, quiet transformation, and personal narrative. Clay becomes a metaphor for her layered identity: shaping not only vessels, but a life as a work of art.

STEPHEN SCOTT
(264) 267-7642

Stephen started carving in Barbados as a teenager. Despite being self-taught, he was soon winning awards for his work in mahogany at the National Cultural Foundation’s Crop Over Visual Arts exhibition and their annual NIFCA festival.
After moving to London in 2001, he trained at Camberwell College of Arts and went on to study historic wood carving at the City & Guilds of London Art School.
Stephen has had a varied career, combining his studio work with teaching. As a tutor he has run classes at London’s Good Life Centre and on the Greek island of Lefkas for Woodcarvers Greece. Today he offers one-to-one tuition at his Christ Church workshop. Beginners are welcome!
Most of Stephen’s work is carved from Barbados mahogany and from English oak and lime. He still has a few pieces that show the characteristic swirly grain of olive wood, mementos of time spent in Greece. Today he is also experimenting with less traditional woods like that of the local neem tree.

ALICIA SCOTT

(246) 838 2099

Alicia Scott is a ceramic artist, born and based in Barbados. Her primary making techniques include pinch, slab and coil hand-building, which she has been exploring for the past 20 years. In recent years, she has been developing her wheel-throwing skill using both western and eastern methods. She has been teaching private pottery classes from her studio as “Wild Tamarind Inc.” since 2022.
Alicia’s design inspiration is drawn first and foremost from her deep love and respect for her home ocean and its inhabitants. She is an avid freediver and scuba diver, and has been a coral reef restoration volunteer since 2020, working primarily with Acropora species. Her artwork investigates her feelings and experiences in the underwater world, with a goal of underscoring the need for its preservation for future generations.
Her current project, “Ceramic Seas,” in partnership with Marine Biologist and artist, Dr. Ingrid Knapp, intends to raise local and regional awareness of ocean conservation topics, as well as support reef health using their combined learning and skillsets in the relevant subjects.
Alicia’s formal ceramic training includes the Ceramic Art elective at the CAPE level (Queen’s College, Barbados) and a Ceramic Development learning residency at the Forest Row School of Ceramics in East Sussex. She has also received tutelage from the Denmark-based Tortus School, South Korean master ceramicist Kwak Kyung Tae, and Barbados’ own Ronaldo Wiltshire.

JAN KEVAN MARCELLO
(246) 836-2574
Although always a lover of the arts, I am a relative newcomer, and came to creating art later in life, starting with life drawing and then graduating to acrylic, watercolour and different forms of mixed media. My joy is in the creative process, I love experimenting with different materials, colours and textures. I am never disappointed, even with failures, believing that you learn more by mistakes and it also increases the joy when you finally produce a successful piece of artwork. My inspiration comes from fellow humans, the beauty of our surroundings especially the colour and shape of flowers, and architectural form. I have exhibited and sold paintings locally and in my second home, Barbados, and attend regular art sessions and workshops in both Countries.

JULIE-ANNE KING
(246) 428-8250 (H) / +1 (154) 946-4379

Julie always had a keen interest in Art from the age of four. Born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, Canada with Barbadian heritage, she coloured her world creatively with different forms of Art through high school, college and university — Art still remains a constant creative fuel. Her vocation, destiny, intrigue, and inspiration is drawn from abstract to photographic styles and views of paintings. Her niche is painting with acrylics / mixed medium, specializing in expressing naturalistic landscapes featuring Barbadian and Canadian themes.
In 2017 a new form of creativity merged — creating glass bottle design. Taking recycled bottles and converting them into creative art, she found it therapeutic doing various kinds of bottles. Her inspiration drew from observing shapes, sizes and styles of bottles. New and innovative ideas were constantly evolving in her mind.
From the artist’s perspective — painting & glass bottle design — she wants the viewers of her art to imagine escaping into nature’s landscapes through her eyes. With glass bottle design, a unique artistic perspective, she creates truly eye-catching bottles. Her inspiration continues to come from observing shapes, sizes and styles of bottles; new ideas constantly evolve in her mind.

RUSSELL PADMORE

Russell Padmore is a Bajan musician, DIY-er, and visual artist. Upon meeting his wife-to-be Lauren, he joined in on her passion for jewelry design and they started a jewelry and home stylings brand (Element L Barbados). Russell added fine art as the third element to the brand “to beautify spaces as jewelry beautifies the body.”
Russell looks to combine elements of island life with modern minimalism, with an emphasis on texture — the coarseness of beach sand, the wrinkle of linen, the rigidity of coral.
He steps outside the usual paint-and-canvas approach by adding structural media such as wood, fabric, clay and plaster, creating pieces that are both painting and sculpture.
Russell has been creating fine art for personal collection, sale and by commission since the pandemic. He has showcased selections at several establishments, as recently as late 2023 at Roundhouse Barbados.

I am a multimedia, multidisciplinary artist and curator. I capture. I paint. I draw. I write. I create installations. I put things together. I use the materials at my disposal to convey my ideas, thoughts and responses to events that move me. Experiencing and sharing these experiences are tantamount for the development of humanity and it cements our interdependence. A lot of my work focuses on emotions and feelings, the unseen. It is the exchange of energy that governs the interaction of all beings, with others and the environment. Very important to my practice is the exploration of the ideas of love and respect.

I paint predominantly in acrylics from my home studio in Holetown. Much of my current work is inspired by the vibrant natural world around me but often with some artistic licence!
I have been commissioned to provide art for private homes and my work has been shown at art exhibitions in the UK and in various galleries in Barbados, selling to art enthusiasts from all over the world. I produce original paintings and also sell my art printed onto both greetings cards and practical yet beautiful products for the home.

I am a self-taught artist with a passion for material experimentation. My work centres around mixed media and collage—where magpie bits and pieces, each with their own history, form a new narrative. My recent love is combining this with wax, both encaustic and oil with cold wax medium (CWM).

TAYMAR REID
(246) 230-6259
My name is Taymar Reid. I live in Prior Park, St. James, Barbados, and I bring more than 12 years of artistic experience to my work in acrylic and charcoal studies. My art is a reflection of a life richly lived — layered, textured, and deeply expressive. Drawing inspiration from nature and the complexity of human emotion, my pieces blend bold acrylics with the organic quality of charcoal to create work that is both visually striking and emotionally resonant.
I began my artistic journey later in life, proving that passion and creativity know no age. My work was exhibited for the first time this year at the Hayman’s Art Festival, and I am now stepping into the public art arena with a growing portfolio and a passion for connecting with new audiences. I am actively seeking opportunities to exhibit my work and engage with the broader creative community.
Whether working on large-scale canvas or intimate studies, I continue to explore new dimensions in my artistic journey, pushing boundaries while staying grounded in my authentic voice as an artist.

My love of art was originally kindled by my grandmother, Jenny, who was herself an artist. She encouraged my parents to send me to oil painting lessons even before I understood the meaning of the word creative. I discovered that I truly enjoyed painting, and art began to play an important role in my life. After my secondary education in Barbados I spent 3 years studying Graphic Art in Canada. A career in graphics followed. Then a few years later the fine artist which had only been muffled resurfaced when I joined Indrani Whittingham and The Newcomers Art Group. I have experimented with almost every medium and my work leans strongly towards realism. I enjoy creating images that portray how the strong sunlight and shadows of the tropics interplay and interact with the bright colours of the island.

She joined Indrani Whittingham’s Newcomers Art Group where she began painting in acrylic. She also studied with Vanita Comissiong, who helped her explore new approaches to her work.
Sandy draws her inspiration from the vibrant colours and dramatic light of the Caribbean. Her subjects focus on local culture, landscapes, seascapes and tropical vegetation. She has sold paintings at the On The Wall Art galleries at Lime Grove and Champers and through commissions. This is her first time joining the Artists Studio Tours, and she hopes it won’t be the last.

A Bajan born artist, I worked in advertising for 22 years where my days were spent mainly editing and proofreading the many magazines, booklets and advertisement produced, or assisting a photographer on photoshoots.
Although growing up I never thought of art as a career option, there were a few moments in my younger life that hinted I might one day be where I am today. As a child, I enjoyed art and at age seven, won a NIFCA award for a collage I produced while attending the St Gabriel’s School. Later on, while at Foundation school, a reproduction of my art was selected to create a large collage which was displayed in the school auditorium for a few years. Continuing my education as an AFS exchange student in Wisconsin, I studied commercial art during the year and helped backstage on set design for the school’s theatre production. That, however, ended my adventures in art for the next 31 years.
In 2015, with my two ‘artsy’ children finally old enough to fend for themselves, and lots of art supplies lying around my home, I decided to try my hand at painting and discovered a new love for it. Art, to me, is a means of relaxation and stress relief. I like to immerse myself in painting for hours, freeing my mind of everything but what is in front of me.
When not painting, I like to be outdoors, hiking on the east coast of the island, therefore much of my art is focused on this landscape.
Other than painting and hiking I also enjoy writing and, so far, have published one novel.

Stephenson (Steve) Carter, a former engineer, transitioned his precision and problem-solving skills into fine woodworking, making it his full-time pursuit in 2013 with the founding of Craftworx Designs. Passionate about showcasing the rich variety of woods grown in Barbados—beyond the well-known Barbados Mahogany—he crafts unique hand turned pens, sculptures, jewelry boxes, charcuterie boards, bowls, and other functional art pieces. Often blending multiple wood types in a single creation, Steve reveals the natural beauty of their grain and how they harmonize together. Committed to sustainability, he works exclusively with locally sourced woods and never uses stains, allowing the natural striations and tones to shine through. His work not only produces striking, one-of-a-kind designs but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the diverse hardwoods grown in Barbados.
Having seen many local woods being discarded, Steve recognized their overlooked beauty and, as an artist, set out to transform these lesser-known Barbadian grown species into true works of art. Through his creations, he has continually educated others on the unique grain, colour, and character of each wood species he uses, often surprising those who only associate Barbados with Mahogany. Over time, Steve has expanded his repertoire, enjoying the process of woodturning on the lathe to produce functional bowls, vases, platters, and other beautiful sculptural and utilitarian pieces.

She has done several workshops with the Canadian and Barbados artist Heidi Berger, who exposed her to acrylic painting which she loved and changed her method of painting to acrylic at that time.
She then joined the popular “Love of Art Paint Group” which is tutored by Barbadian Artist Tracey Williams who is an amazing artist and tutor.
Suzanne, over the years, has changed from Oils to Acrylics and poured paints. She loves to paint all forms of nature abstractly. Especially flowers, animals, dancers, under the ocean scenes and family paintings.

I started painting after I moved from England to Barbados. I love all mediums so I mostly mix them all together. I am not interested in spending time recreating my surroundings which are already perfectly visual. I like to create from whatever pops into my head; I do weirdly tend to paint a lot of dead people — to keep my memory of them alive, people that have brought me joy through their own artistic abilities. I have no theme to my art, I just go with whatever makes me smile. My studio is my happy place — come visit.

Boats, Goats & Dancing Ladies: A Caribbean Cacophony
26/01/2026
Artist Susan Mains exhibition ‘Boats, Goats & Dancing’ at the Gallery of Caribbean Art ‘Ladies: A Caribbean Cacophony’. Barbados Today News . Updated by Shanna Moore 26/01/2026 https://barbadostoday.bb/2026/01/26/boats-goats-dancing-ladies-a-caribbean-cacophony/ Exhibition ends Feb 5th. 10am-4pm. Free entrance. www.artgallerycaribbean.com (246) 419-0858
“The Gallery of Caribbean Art proudly presents Boats, Goats & Dancing Ladies: A Caribbean Cacophony, a solo exhibition by Grenadian artist Susan Mains, marking her continued engagement with the gallery, where she has exhibited regularly since 2003.
In this exuberant body of work, Mains paints the Caribbean as a living, breathing symphony. Boats skim turquoise waters, goats wander sunlit hillsides, and dancing women swirl through saturated fields of colour. The sound of the sail flapping in the breeze, the bleat of a goat, (or sheep) and the beat of a drum add wonderfully to the cacophany. Everyday island scenes are transformed into vibrant expressions of rhythm, movement, and communal life, rendered with a confident, expressive brush and an unmistakable sense of joy. “ In this time of world tension, art can give a respite, a moment away to remember the good things all around us” Mains explains.
Beyond her studio practice, Susan Mains has played a significant role in shaping and promoting Caribbean art on the regional and international stage. She was deeply involved in Carifesta in Barbados in August, championing Grenadian artists and helping to bring the nation’s contemporary art into wider Caribbean dialogue. Her commitment to cultural advocacy extends globally through her role as Commissioner of the Grenada Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, a position she has held for the ninth time, leading Grenada’s presence at one of the world’s most prestigious art events.
Boats, Goats & Dancing Ladies: A Caribbean Cacophony celebrates both the painterly vitality of Mains’ work and her longstanding dedication to Caribbean cultural exchange — an invitation to experience the islands through colour, memory, and movement. In Grenada, you can find her work at the Susan Mains Gallery at Spiceland Mall, or Art House 473 in Calliste.

Susan Mains with Asher Mains
at the Gallery of Caribbean Arts, Speightstown.
The exhibition ends Thursday, February 5th
‘Our first show of the year is officially open! Yesterday, Sunday, 11th of January, we kicked off the New Year with the opening of "Boats, Goats and Dancing Ladies: A Caribbean Cacophony" by @susanmains and @ashermains. Through their art, Susan and Asher deftly demonstrated a vision of chaotic Caribbean harmony that dazzled and wowed guests, whether it was through blazingly vibrant landscapes and women dancing in a whirl of energetic elegance, or the softly haunting melancholy of abandoned fishing nets and the quiet moments repairing them in between voyages.
A big thank you to all who came out and supported the exhibition, @fivehive246 for catering the event with their delicious nibbles, and to Susan and Asher for putting together such a wonderful show.
The exhibition will run till Thursday, 5th of February, 2026. We invite you to come on down and experience the Caribbean Cacophony! “

Call to support the arts with gallery Nation News. January 25, 2026
By: Natanga Smith
https://nationnews.com/2026/01/25/call-to-support-the-arts-with-gallery

Veteran historian, artist and cultural advocate Sir Henry Fraser has once again issued a public call for the establishment of a national art gallery, using the opening of BIM The Beautiful as a platform to highlight what he described as a long-standing national failure to support the visual arts.
Sir Henry delivered the lead address at the opening of the exhibition, hosted at Caribbean Brushstrokes Art Gallery and curated by gallery founder Rae Skinner. The show features works by 17 artists, bringing together perspectives.
In opening remarks, Skinner described the exhibition as “a celebration of our island’s vibrant culture, stunning landscapes and incredible artistic talent”, noting that the gallery’s mission was rooted in regional connection.
She referenced Kamau Brathwaite’s concept that “unity is submarine”, saying that Caribbean peoples remained deeply connected beneath the surface of geography and history.
A portrait of Brathwaite on display, painted by Canadian artist Asher Mains, underscores that crossCaribbean and diasporic exchange.
The exhibition’s works depict everyday Barbadian life and landscape such as East Coast seascapes, cane fields and cane fires, market scenes, street vendors, schoolchildren, beach life, blackbirds and bees, capturing what Skinner described as “love letters to Barbados”.
Sir Henry, who is also a contributing artist, used his address to trace the historical depth of Barbadian visual art, countering outdated notions that the island lacked cultural substance.
He referenced early works by Samuel Coppin in the 17th century, the Robinson painting of Bridgetown, 19th century artists Stephen and Caroline Poyer and internationally successful Barbadian painter Haynes King, before moving through the artistic “explosion” of the 1960s and 1970s that produced generations of painters, sculptors and ceramicists.
Despite this legacy, Sir Henry argued that Barbados had failed to provide institutional support for visual artists.
“We have been promised a national gallery for more than 60 years,” he said. “Where is it?”
He noted that many trained artists, particularly graduates of the Barbados Community College, were forced into unrelated work due to the absence of sustained state investment in the visual arts. He described this as “a tragedy” for a country with such creative depth.
Sir Henry acknowledged the historic role of the Barbados Arts Council’s gallery at Pelican Village ( now at Earthworks Complex) and the growth of private galleries over the decades, crediting Caribbean Brushstrokes as “the queen of galleries” for its scale, vision and curatorial ambition. However, he added that private initiatives could not replace national responsibility.
“Without galleries, artists are like spinning tops in mud,” he said, adding that access to serious exhibition spaces was critical to artistic development and international recognition.
Closing his address, Sir Henry questioned why significant public funding was routinely allocated to other sectors while visual art remained marginalised.
Skinner, in her closing remarks, thanked the exhibiting artists and their support networks, acknowledging the families, partners and communities who sustain artistic practice in the absence of formal structures.”

Artist Kesean Abrams ‘ARTIFACT’ AT DREAMSPACES Residency
Saturday, January 17 | 6:00–9:00pm
Dreamspace POD8, Ground Floor
UNION at Beckwith | Prince Alfred Street | Bridgetown.
“At this open studio, Kesean shares work developed during his third DREAMSPACES Residency at UNION at Beckwith.
For this iteration, the studio itself became a collaborator. Walls and floors were no longer passive backdrops but active surfaces. Places where brushes were cleaned, paint was mixed, and emotion was released. Over time, the architecture absorbed the process, becoming an artifact of creation. Traces of frustration, reflection, and consumption remain visible, measuring both movement and mood..
ARTIFACT marks a turning point in Kesean’s artistic journey. Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, he explores the relationship between artists and capitalism, the tension between creative freedom and economic survival, and the emotional labor of making. Migration within the Caribbean and memory as everyday artifact shape the narratives within the work.
As Kesean prepares to close this residency, we gather to witness process, presence, and practice. Come share space, conversation, and reflection as we activate the street through art and community.
Union at Beckwith is an emerging creative cluster in Bridgetown developed by Union Collaborative Inc., a nonprofit social-creative enterprise providing access to space, tools, and programming for creative practitioners.
DREAMSPACES is an Art, Design & Making residency offering space for experimentation, exhibition, workshops, or pop-ups. Residents also access UNIONToolBox, ADM Bank, coARTyard, and Portal vitrine galleries all of which support independent, contemporary, and experimental practice.

I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed.
What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting.
The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information.
Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun.
The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this.

“Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!
My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.
I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.
With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

Our Mission
To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.
The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.
of the NCF are:
To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally
To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government
To organize cultural festivals
Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.
To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work
To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage
To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains
To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms
To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders
To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets
To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”
Dan Rather
