The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.

The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.

I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.

I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.

I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.

Thank you for understanding.

AVARK. Mark and Ava Daniel.

“Art is the language of our existence and it provides the perfect vocabulary for our work. We design pieces that would portray the function and scale of our environment. In a successful piece, the past and the future come together creating a sense of timelessness.”

What started out as a small cottage industry has now expanded and been created into a lifestyle company.

AVARK Incorporated is the husband and wife team of Mark & Ava Daniel; producing 100% Bajan handcrafted and hand painted one-of-a-kind pieces that range from clothing and soft furnishings to signature bags and designer wall art frames.

The inspiration for the bags originated during a four hour flight layover in Miami in 2009. To pass the time, Mark wandered into store after store and stumbled upon a bag store. Unknowingly, the contents of this store were to become the catalyst and the motivational factor in the pursuit of ‘The Avark Bag’. On his return home to Barbados, with the image of the postman’s bag in mind he decided to experiment with making one, which he thought could also enhance his male clothing collection and the leather sandals that he already produced.

The bags are first and foremost works of art, and secondly functional. Each bag is totally handcrafted, painted and hand stitched, they have to be seen to be appreciated.

The first showings on runways in New York, London and the Caribbean Fashion Weeks, garnered an overwhelming response. A natural progression of the bags has now expanded into the female collection.

AVARK aims to have all of its products keep their edge so that the designs do not lose their originality and charm.

Mark says: “I have to give honour where honour is due. So the production of these bags is dedicated to my wife Ava, because without her support and sacrifice in all other areas of our business, I would not be able to carry out tAvark Danielm/avarklifestyle

Murals painted by schoolchildren and teachers from different schools at Sam Lords Castle Resort and Spa.

The murals represent each team’s interpretation of the Sam Lord story and were unveiled on Tuesday September 23, 2025.

More detail here https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10161796185519562&id=628829561

“As a result of relationships developed in schools over the years sharing "*The Power Of Choice*" teaching and with *Wyndham Grand Barbados Sam Lord’s Castle Resort & Spa’s* general manager in the past, we ended up project managing this Murals Initiative from beginning to end. The murals represent each team’s interpretation of the Sam Lord story and were unveiled on Tuesday September 23, 2025.

I cannot even draw a good stick man, have never had any keen interest in art, and still do not. My excitement has been about the teachers and students being able to use their gifts and talents in meaningful ways. It was HUMBLING ALLOWING God to *LEAD* in these first six murals becoming a reality. Even after the students and teachers began painting, I still never imagined the murals being so OUTSTANDING. Many ideas have come about what can be done with the murals now that these first six have been completed, and because of the overall experience. There will be other spin-off initiatives launched to seek to positively influence all in schools, and beyond.

THANKS to God, Wyndham Grand Barbados Sam Lord’s Castle Resort & Spa, Rachel Williams of Graffix 2 Inc., Andrew Batson of Art Hub, the teachers, students and parents!”

Definition of Black & White Photography:

Black and white photography is a photographic style that captures images using shades of grey, ranging from black to white, rather than full colour. It emphasizes contrast, texture, lighting, and composition, often highlighting mood, emotion, and timeless qualities. This style is commonly used for artistic expression, documentary work, and historical photography, as it can evoke a sense of nostalgia or focus attention on form and content without the distraction of colour.

Conclusion:

Black & White Moments promises to be an intriguing exhibition that highlights the versatility and artistic potential of black & white photography. We eagerly anticipate the participation of the talented members of the Barbados Photographic Society and look forward to showcasing their exceptional works at the Caribbean Brushstrokes Gallery in April 2026. We are confident that Black & White Moments will be a significant cultural event, drawing art enthusiasts and photographers alike.

‘MAKERS & MENTORS - Crafted by Those Who Teach’ exhibition.

30 artists at Caribbean Brushstrokes Art Gallery.

Wednesday, October 22nd - Saturday, November 8th.

“October is Education Month — the perfect moment to honor the teachers who not only nurture young minds but also create powerful art of their own.

At Caribbean Brushstrokes, we celebrate the makers who mentor and the mentors who make with a special exhibition showcasing works by some of Barbados’ art teachers. From sculpture and textiles to painting and beyond, their creativity is as diverse as their classrooms.

Step into a space where guidance becomes creation, where lessons echo in every piece, and where the artistry of our teachers shines brightly.

Join us in celebrating their creativity, mentorship, and the vital role they play in shaping the next generation.”

JOANNE REED
‘THE SUBLIME LIGHT OF BATHSHEBA’
JOANNE REED

JOHN WEBSTER

Born 15 November 1951, first child of Herbert Wallace Webster and Clarice Enid Leila Webster.

From his early years John was very keen in nature and especially that in the sea, spending much of his holiday time snorkeling and shell collecting off the South coast. He attended a short corse in taxidermy where he leant how to preserve fish and other sea life and particularly the puffer fish. The latter he would go out in is small row boat, capture them and preserve them fo sale to tourists. He also captured and preserved various Crustacea and in the process discovered a new previously unknown species which was subsequently named for him as Araeneus websterii!

John spent a significant amount of his teenage years in woodworking, metal work and electronics areas. He built all types of electronic equipment and built his own personal computer long before a PC could be purchased. He subsequently used that computer to produce his PhD thesis and became the first student to produce a thesis on a computer at UWI where all theses were previously created on IBM Selectric typewriters!!

In 1973 John entered the Faculty of Agriculture at St Augustine in Trinidad and graduated in 1976 with a BSc Agriculture (Upper 2nd class Honors) in Agronomy and Horticulture. He then proceeded into Post Graduate studies with the encouragement of Professor Nassir Ahmad in Soil Science. His research project was based at Bawdens in St Andrew and focused on the reclamation of Scotland Clays using various chemical ameliorates with sugar cane as the crop. In 1985 John was awarded the PhD in Soil Science. In 1986 he started a computer company, Computers and Controls ((Barbados) Ltd, as a partnership with a Trinidadian group, representing Hewlett-Packard Packard and Compaq. 18 years later he returned to his professional training in Agriculture and entered the field of Landscape Design and maintenance m, an area in which he continues to date.

John’s father, Herbert, worked at the Barbados Mutual Life Assurance for much of his working life but was an avid semi-professional photographer. John was taught about photography literally from the time he was in diapers. Herbert used to do lots of weddings at the typical charge of $50 per wedding!! These were the days of film photography. He had converted part of the family home in Maxwell Coast into his darkroom and that’s where he and John would do all their printing of images onto photographic paper and process the printed images through the three chemical stages to the final wash and drying, all under the red darkroom light.

John remembers his father buying the 35mm film in bulk and using a bulk loader to load the 35mm film cassettes to fit into the camera. Once the film was exposed in the camera it was then placed in a black bag and removed from the cassette. Then loaded into the black processing tank, all by feel in the black bag. It would then be processed for the specific time in the developer followed by the fixer and a thorough washing in fresh water before hanging it up to dry. Film photography was quite a process and so at may points the lmsge could be ruined! Digital photography makes almost anyone into a photographer !!!

In the 1950s Herbert was using a Rolleiflex which John still has in his collection. He then moved to Pentax 35mm cameras which John started to use, moving up to the Spotmatic.

John has always had a deep interest in the Archeology and History of Barbados and his photography demonstates this. From early in his youth John focused on birds and his several years in Trinidad with the huge number of bird species to be found there, turned him into a serious birder and bird photographer.

In 2013 he started a live series on the CBC TV8 “Mornin’ Barbados” program titled “Breakfast with the Birds”. The series which was every Friday morning and was anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes, depending on the other stories that had to be covered in live TV, ran for about 14 months.

The purpose was to help locals appreciate the BirdLife that we actually have in Barbados. The program was streamed online so many people around the world tuned in to see it. As a result of this program John was contacted by BirdsCaribbean to attend their upcoming conference in Grenada to do a presentation on what he was doing on CBC, as no one else in the region had such an educational program. Subsequently John became a member of BirdsCaribbean and has been a regular participant in their biennial conferences delivering presentations on various aspects of birding in Barbados supported with his bird photography. He has attended conferences in Jamaica, Cuba and Guadeloupe with post conference birding visits to Dominica and Martinique . He is also a presenter at various workshops that BirdsCaribbean has sponsored in Barbados. He provides birding and photography tours to visiting birders to Barbados.

John currently uses a Nikon D500 with a Sigma 150-600mm zoom lens for his bird photography and a high end iPhone for most of his other photography. Most of his editing of images is done on the iPhone or iPad.

ARTS DIRECTORY BARBADOS

How It Happened

I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed.

What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting.

The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information.

Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun.

The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this.

“Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!

My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.

I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.

With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

Helping the young talent where we can.

This pandemic has created financial difficulties for so many in the arts and they lose any chance to make a career of art.

I just received a donation of art supplies being kindly given by artist Jeena Chatrani, curator of Antillean Gallery of Art online gallery. Thank you Jeena.

These will go to a very talented 17 year old to help her keep drawing and painting.

Would you consider looking around your painting/studio space and see if there are any art supplies that you may not want or need and help the future talents of Barbados.

Either give directly to artists whom you feel may need the help or contact me via private message here and drop off the arts supplies and I will happily disburse them to those in need.

Please be aware of the dignity and pride of those receiving.

Please don’t add their names here. Private message me.

QUEEN’S PARK GALLERY

Our Mission

To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.

The Role of the NCF

The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.

FUNCTIONS

of the NCF are:

To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally

To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government

To organize cultural festivals

Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.

OBJECTIVES of the NCF are:

To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work

To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage

To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains

To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms

To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders

To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets

To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”
