The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.
The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.
I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.
I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.
I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.
Thank you for understanding.

After a short summer hiatus, the KAC Gallery of Fellow Artists returns to showcase our KAC GFA SOLO Artist for November, Julianne Gill.
Gill’s colorfully expressive works can run, and often balance, visually crisp and fluid intonations, full of literal and emotional levels, softly moody yet warm, celebratory and introspective.

CONJURING
December 3rd–17th, 2025 at Caribbean Brushtrokes Gallery, Pelican Village
Opening Night: Wednesday, December 3rd • 6:30pm - 8.30pm
December 3rd - December 17th
“To conjure is to summon what does not yet exist — to pull form out of feeling, vision out of memory, and meaning out of the unseen. It is the quiet magic of transforming raw material into something that moves, heals, challenges, or reveals. It is not just technique.
It is intention.
It is spirit.
It is art becoming alive.
“Conjuring” is an invitation into that alchemy — a space where imagination takes shape and the intangible becomes beautifully, powerfully real. Through this exhibition, viewers are asked to step closer, to look deeper, and to consider the ways creativity acts as a vessel for identity, memory, ancestry, and the human experience.
From December 3rd to 17th, Caribbean Brushstrokes will open its doors to an exhibition that explores the wonder, mystery, and emotional resonance held within the act of creation itself.
Prepare to witness art that conjures.
Art that breathes.
Art that meets you where you are — and carries you somewhere new. More details revealed soon...”

‘CONJURING’
ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Ras Aykem-I Ramsay ✨Akyem-i Ramsay
December 3rd–17th, 2025 at Caribbean Brushtrokes Gallery
Opening Night: Wednesday, December 3rd • 6:30pm - 8.30pm
“When Ras Aykem steps into a space, the atmosphere shifts—because he doesn’t just paint… he conjures.
A graduate of Edna Manley in Jamaica and Universidad de las Artes in Cuba, Ras Aykem is recognized across the Caribbean as one of the region’s most powerful contemporary voices. A co-founder of De People’s Art Movement (De PAM), he has spent decades shaping the visual language of the Caribbean, weaving ancestral memory, mysticism, and raw cultural expression into every mark. His work is fearless, deeply symbolic, and spiritually charged—art as invocation, art as resistance, art as awakening. Ras Aykem’s canvases are not just viewed… they are experienced.
This December 3–17, witness his newest visions as he brings his distinctive magic into CONJURING—where creation becomes a ritual and every stroke carries the weight of story, spirit, and transformation.”
- Caribbean Brushstrokes

‘CONJURING’
ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Shawn Peters ✨
December 3rd–17th, 2025 at Caribbean Brushtrokes Gallery
Opening Night: Wednesday, December 3rd • 6:30pm - 8.30pm
“Shawn Peters has been shaping the future of Caribbean art since childhood— guided first by Trinidadian artist Makemba Kunle and later by the legendary Leroy Clarke, who became his mentor and creative compass. His work blends intuition, spirituality, and a mastery of colour and form, creating pieces that feel like portals—abstract yet deeply human, rhythmic yet contemplative. Shawn’s exhibitions have become some of the most anticipated art events in Trinidad & Tobago, earning him national accolades and features such as “Top 20 Stories of Tomorrow”. His imagery even appears on Trinidad & Tobago’s postal stamps.
Now, Shawn brings his visionary world to Barbados, sharing works that merge modern design with ancestral echoes—transforming thought, memory, and emotion into living pieces of art.
Experience Shawn’s evocative practice this December 3–17 at CONJURING, where his pieces invite you to look deeper, feel deeper, and connect to something ancient and entirely new.”

‘CONJURING’ an exhibition with artists Akyem-i Ramsay & Shawn Peters
Opening Night reception, Wed Dec 3rd, 6:300m – 8:30pm
At Caribbean Brushstrokes, Upstairs Building 1, Pelican Island
Kenwyn Crichlow Opening Remarks
“And we’re honoured to share that Kenwyn Crichlow, one of the Caribbean’s most respected artistic voices, will deliver our Opening Remarks.
When he speaks, the room listens — and the significance of this exhibition becomes unmistakable.
“To conjure is to practice a form of magic — an alchemy of bringing images to mind and making the intangible real.”
Crichlow captures the heart of "Conjuring" with this idea: that great art transforms raw material into something spiritually alive.
This joint exhibition by Ras Akyem-I and Shawn Peters is exactly that — a stirring dialogue in paint, energy, rhythm, and memory.
Works that pulse with presence. Works that honour the African diaspora in the Caribbean. Works that call us to reflect, feel, and connect deeply.
Come witness the alchemy. Come be part of the gathering.”

-Wife
https://risee.substack.com/p/asherah-wife-of-yahweh-maker-of-worlds
Fine art photographer Risée Chaderton Charles creates her imagery with her team.
Asherah -Wife of Yahweh, Maker of Worlds words by
Risée Chaderton-Charles
Rochelle Holder is one of my favourite faces. Sorry everyone, but it’s true — it just is. Rochelle is a chameleon. A wraith. A fae. A changeling. She can embody whatever brief she is given with just a shrug of her shoulder, a widening of her eyes, and a tilt of her head. She also has a broad grin that flashes out with ease as our crew does its usual silliness on set; so even though we work well and professionally together, we are always still having fun.
Two months ago, while in discussion about this Goddess series, my husband casually said, “you should do Asherah”; he’s been listening to an podcast hosted by a bible scholar, so this was on his mind. I had to go digging to see who Asherah was; unlike him, and much to my father’s eternal chagrin, my bible study is no longer current. I had already looked at Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Irish, Taino, and even Scandinavian mythology, but I had yet to turn my eye —and crew— toward myths that were more directly linked to the Christian culture within which I was raised. I did do a bit of a slow blink when I discovered who Asherah was in pre-Christian mythology. God had a wife? Why hadn’t anyone told me? How are we hiding the pre-Christian version of Hera so casually? Just like the Greek Hera, Asherah was considered the Queen of heaven, Queen of the sky, protector of women, goddess of fertility, the primordial being who, alongside her husband Yahweh plucked the universe, the planets, and life from the swirling soup of matter and darkness.
Rochelle will be the perfect canvas.

On shoot day, our flow dragged. We were all late to arrive, and — except for Rochelle — slow to move. Within the team, we all have kids, and half term holiday means that almost everyone is moving with theirs… and the oppressive heat and humidity isn’t helping anyone move faster.
The kids’ ages range from eight to fifteen, and the set bulges with young bodies. Still, once we get settled, the mood on-set is calm and soothing. Our artsy anxious introversion and maternal angst lie temporarily dormant. The youngest child has her nose deep in a book, the eldest is immersed in watching their mother transform Rochelle, and the child in the middle is flipping through the book “Goddess” again while quietly vibrating with excitement at seeing mythology come alive, once again, right in her backyard. The children are happy, and their mothers are buried in their work.
Mandy put the look together with her usual deftness and precision, chatting casually with Rochelle and the rest of the crew, and keeping everyone distracted and comfortable despite the sweltering heat. Soon, Rochelle has become the embodiment of a primordial being, ready to hold the stars, the moons, the planets, the dust, and the wisps of nebulas.
Allyson firmly declines to invade the bush today. The last time she was here — for our Irish Goddess Cethlenn— she wrangled a tree, and the tree wrangled right back. No-one is excited for the possibility of a second allergic reaction, so this time I take on the task of organising the backdrop. Some black gauze in the trees, to mute the afternoon light; some water on the skin, to add to the glow; and one solitary light, tilted downward from camera right.
Allyson the prop-master has instead has created a world in each bowl of water for our goddess to handle…

1. Allyson making props 2. The universe in mixing bowls 3. Rochelle on set
Asherah is alive. Soon, the world will come to life in her hands.

‘THE SUBLIME LIGHT OF BATHSHEBA’
Joanne Reed – Artist’s statement
Living on the East coast of Barbados I am constantly drawn to the restless dialogue between sea, sky and land. My paintings emerge from this landscape, not as literal depictions but as meditations on mood, memory and atmosphere.
The Atlantic shapes everything here the air, the light, the coral rock formations, the temperament of the day, I paint to capture that fleeting sublime quality, moments when the familiar becomes mysterious where a storm or soft haze transforms the coastline into something vast and introspective.
My work is about the in between space, where beauty and wildness coexist ,and serenity and turbulence meet. Through layered color and shifting tone, I try to express the emotional undercurrent of the place and my reaction to it. The solitude, the power, and the quiet awe it inspires. It is deeply moving, an ever-shifting backdrop to the lives played out on the stage of a real-life drama. Living here is both grounding and humbling, and my paintings are a way of honoring the East coasts raw and unpolished truth, its moody grace and elemental soul.

“As we celebrate Barbados’ 59th Anniversary of Independence, and the installation of our new Head of State. I would like to acknowledge and commend the outstanding work of our accredited photography team.
Their professionalism, dedication, and high standard of conduct throughout today’s Independence Day events — including the historic inauguration of our second President, The Most Honourable Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Bostic — were truly exemplary.
The team represented the Barbados Photographic Society with distinction, capturing this important national milestone with skill and pride. Their contribution not only supported the success of today’s events but also reflected the values and excellence we stand for as a Society.

“When Cheryl (McCollin-Walker) first contacted me to teach a class on Pet Photography earlier this year, I must admit that my initial thought was, “This is a daunting task.” After all, what could I possibly share with a group of very skilled photographers on a subject that I consider to be somewhat niche in Barbados? Plus, did time even permit me to do this topic BPS justice? However, I’m never one to shy away from this kind of challenge, so I told her that I’d give it some thought.
I began reading, researching, and reflecting on my own experiences to produce a rough outline of what my talk could look like. This was easier than I imagined, and within the space of a week, an initial PowerPoint presentation was ready. However, I thought this class needed something extra… an outdoor component. Sounds easy enough, right? The second step was getting some actual pets for the class to try putting these tips into practice. It’s important to remember that not everyone likes dogs or working with them. So I needed to look for some calm dogs (and some calm pet parents, too!).”

ARTS DIRECTORY BARBADOS
How It Happened
I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed.
What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting.
The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information.
Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun.
The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this.

“Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!
My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.
I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.
With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”
-Jeena Chatrani

The artists of Antillean Gallery of Art online gallery:
Catherine Forter Chee a Tow, Cathy Cummins, Chris Richards, Dana Sikkens, Jeena Chatrani, Julia Seymour, Julianne Gill, Lorna Wilson, Mario Holder, Maurice Forde, Sian Pampellonne, Tracey Williams, Trevor Desilvia Curator Jeena Chatrani

Helping the young talent where we can.
This pandemic has created financial difficulties for so many in the arts and they lose any chance to make a career of art.
I just received a donation of art supplies being kindly given by artist Jeena Chatrani, curator of Antillean Gallery of Art online gallery. Thank you Jeena.
These will go to a very talented 17 year old to help her keep drawing and painting.
Would you consider looking around your painting/studio space and see if there are any art supplies that you may not want or need and help the future talents of Barbados.
Either give directly to artists whom you feel may need the help or contact me via private message here and drop off the arts supplies and I will happily disburse them to those in need.
Please be aware of the dignity and pride of those receiving.
Please don’t add their names here. Private message me.
Allow them to decide if they want their names added to art supplies being given to them.
Thank you
Corrie

Our Mission
To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.
The Role of the NCF
The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.
FUNCTIONS
of the NCF are:
To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally
To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government
To organize cultural festivals
Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.
OBJECTIVES of the NCF are:
To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work
To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage
To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains
To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms
To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders
To create high quality products that will be competitive on the local, regional and international markets
To maximize the role of the cultural sector in the tourism industry

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”
Dan Rather
