The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies. I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page. I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on. Often our best friends are our greatest supporters while also serving as our sharpest critics. Alison Chapman-andrews was a true friend to the Barbados National Art Gallery (BNAG). She was an early champion of the mission to establish a National Gallery in Barbados, serving as vice-president of the Art Collection Foundation when it was first established in 1985 and remained an outspoken advocate over the intervening four decades as various initiatives rose and fell. In a gesture of tremendous generosity, Alison bequeathed her personal collection to the BNAG. Many years ago Alison made the decision that every time she sold a painting, she would buy a work by another artist. The result was a collection of breadth and inspiring quality. More than 180 works of art by approximately 90 artists will forever bear her name in the credit line as a testament to her vision and commitment. Throughout the half a century of her career spent in Barbados, she worked with dedication not only to her own craft as a painter but in supporting and developing the visual arts. As a teacher at the St. Michael School, an art columnist for the Nation Newspaper, as a founding member of AICA Southern Caribbean as well as an artist, Chapman Andrews contributed to the art community with determination. When the artist Francis Griffith passed away in 2001 without any immediate family, a very simple funeral was organised at the chapel in Westbury Cemetery. Mr. Griffith had painted the most extraordinary visions experienced as he travelled the far corners of the globe, but the priest, who knew nothing of this artist, spoke only in the most generic terms. As the brief ceremony was drawing to a close, I could feel Alison struggling in the pew behind me as she rose to her feet. “Is no one going to speak about the artist?” Alison called out in her halting voice. The chapel was silent. Taken aback, the priest asked her to repeat her question. “Is no one going to speak about the artist?” she repeated in a more commanding tone. Alison proceeded to deliver her own brief eulogy from the back of the church. That was Alison - an outspoken advocate holding us all accountable in her mission to ensure that the artists of Barbados were treated with the respect and acknowledgement they deserved. With the support of the Barbados National Art Gallery I have spent time over the last couple of years documenting Alison’s contribution, filming extended conversations with her and digitising her meticulously assembled scrapbooks. I think I knew in those moments what a gift it was to spend that time with her, discussing a life devoted to art. I am so very grateful for that time, and for her spirited mentorship and boundless friendship. As a parallel event to the upcoming Carifesta celebrations in Barbados, the BNAG in collaboration with AICA Southern Caribbean is organising a one-day discussion and film screening at the Barbados Museum on August 24th. This event is dedicated to the memory of Alison Chapman Andrews and will include a tribute to her wide-ranging contributions. The Board of the Barbados National Art Gallery extends our condolences to all who knew and loved our dear friend, Alison Chapman Andrews. May she find rest and joy in a verdant landscape of eternal beauty. PRESS RELEASE Grenada’s Art Shines at CARIFESTA XV “Bridgetown, Barbados, August 26, 2025 – Grenada’s visual artists made a commanding impression at the CARIFESTA XV exhibitions, proudly showcasing the island’s creative excellence across multiple venues. At the official opening of the regional exhibition on Saturday evening, visitors to the Norman Centre were immediately welcomed by striking Grenadian pieces: Surge by Kristianne Buxo and Short Knees by John Henry, setting the tone for a powerful artistic presence. Inside, art lovers explored four exhibition rooms filled with paintings, sculptures, installations, and photography, encountering the works of Oliver Benoit, Arthur Daniel, Andrea McCleod, and Asher Mains. Side by side with dozens of regional pieces, reflecting Grenada’s contributions and distinctive voice in Caribbean art. Grenada’s display continues at the Grand Market within the national booth, where the vibrant works of Suelin Low Chew Tung, Richie Modeste, and Andrea McCleod—whose “Lion” has become a crowd favourite—add energy and colour. Tens of thousands of festival-goers are expected to pass through daily, also discovering handmade crafts and locally produced items from Grenadian manufacturers. The festival’s visual highlight will culminate on August 29 at Queen’s Park with the screening of Samuel Ogilvie’s short film – ‘A Syncretism in Kayryouacou’. Presented alongside other regional works in an outdoor looped projection, this immersive showcase marks another milestone for Ogilvie, who first premiered the film—created in collaboration with Ian Friday—at the Grenada Pavilion of the Biennale di Venezia in 2022.
Grenada’s artistic impact has also extended to private galleries across Barbados. Special CARIFESTA-themed displays featuring Grenadian works are on view at the Caribbean Brushstrokes in Pelican Village, The Gallery at Lime Grove, and the Gallery of Caribbean Art in Speightstown— underscoring a strong commitment to regional integration and Caribbean cultural synergy. For some Grenadian artists, CARIFESTA XV represents their first regional exposure, while others bring experience from international exhibitions at the highest levels. This landmark gathering has given all participating artists an invaluable platform to share their stories. The Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy facilitated Grenada’s strong presence, ensuring the seamless transport of artworks to Barbados. “What a week we’ve had at CarifestaXV! It has been wonderful having the opportunity to showcase some incredible Caymanian artists alongside the work of colleagues from across the region; to participate in panels discussions about the role of national galleries and the evolution of the Caribbean art sector; to experience the wider Bajan art sector through studio and exhibition visits, not to mention supporting our wider Cayman Islands contingent organised by the Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture and Heritage and including representatives of CNCF and the National Museum, Heat, UCCI Dancers, Dreamchasers, the Cayman Islands Folk Singers, along with some of Cayman’s best known traditional artists, and more. The Ripple Effect event launched the joining of forces between The Mellon Foundation (@mellonfoundation) and The Clara Lionel Foundation in support of the expansion of programming headed by Fresh Milk. The evening, supported by @fentybeauty, brought together a vibrant crowd showing up in support of the country’s artists. This occasion signals a promising turn towards robust and tangible support of the cultural sector. The insights provided, informed the four nominators with expertise in contemporary creative practices, in their selection of the Fellows. The Fellowship will provide sustained support during a 10-month programme, starting September 2025 until June 2026, culminating in a 2026 exhibition curated by Dr. Natalie McGuire. They received the awards for demonstrating commitment to their practices, working across painting, sculpture, drawing, moving image, and digital media. THE IZEBO EXPERIENCE A CARIFESTA XV (2025) FRINGE EVENT THE WORKS The works on plywood and palm husks were lovingly saved and stored for many years by Izebo’s lifelong friends St. Claire Crookendale, Lot Balance, and St. Claire’s son Kimar Barrow. Kimar recalled childhood memories of sitting on the floor of their house watching Izebo paint. The works on wood are from the collection of Ahmad Desai at Junk Culture. THE FILM It is the premiere of the 2025 documentary film “Izebo the Artist” by Barbadian film producer Penelope Hynam of Sea Weaver Productions and Swedish director Pelle Hybbinette. Izebo was one of ten people captured in their 2011 documentary-shorts series, A Day in a Bajan Life, ten episodes that were broadcast on CBC-TV8 in 2012 and 2013, and screened at film festivals in Barbados, Los Angeles (USA), Sweden and Toronto (Canada). THE PANEL Outside “the Bajan art scene” of degrees and CVs, trained muralists and commissioned murals, opening cocktails and media coverage, there are artists whose natural expressions are unsanctioned. They are often “conscious” individuals at odds with society, who make art not for fame or fortune but as a means to challenge society and question cultural norms. The panel discussion, “Marginalized Artists in the Barbados and Caribbean Artspace” brings into focus the artists whose passion is the making of art, not décor. Moderated by Adrian Burnett, the panelists are Ashanti Trotman, David Guru McClean, Harrietta Cumberbatch and Troy “Saanrose” Burgess. UWI cultural studies student Shannon-terrill Arthur is filming for an assignment, assisted by Shaquille Hewitt, BCC fine arts student. THE GALLERY It is especially fitting for the exhibition to be at The Winifred Cumberbatch Garden Art Gallery. This family-built gallery was created to honour Winifred, a popular Barbadian artist, and supports and promotes the work of marginalised visual artists of Barbados, the Caribbean and their diaspora. BECOMING IZEBO THE ARTIST “I’m penniless. I’m an artist out of poverty, I’m an artist out of the ghetto who enhances the ghetto culturally…..,… I have no canvas, the walls of Barbados is my canvas, is my collection …You understand?” Izebo, in the documentary series A Day in a Bajan Life, 2011 Izebo John Henry Braithwaite was born 8 th August 1954 and grew up in Dalkeith Village, St Michael with his mother Florence Adorer Brathwaite and two brothers Victor (Ras Jahaziel Itor Tafari) and Ronald. The boys helped their mother with her needlework and smocking as the only sources of income for the household until they could work for themselves and contribute. ‘ Izebo came to art through Victor, who was a student of the famous Karl Broodhagen at Combermere Secondary School. Victor taught John everything he learnt from Broodhagen and the two practiced art and drawing until John outpaced him in speed and ease in his art. It came naturally to him. When Victor started work, the first thing he did was improve their housing, but a day came when their home was torn down and literally thrown in the road in front of them. It was 1969 and John was 14 years old. It was a major turning point in the boys’ lives. Victor turned to the Rastafarian religion and John followed. They studied and eventually travelled to Jamaica in the mid-1970s to immerse themselves in the religion. However, there were victims of the government’s ongoing crackdown on the Rastafarian movement and during a raid they were beaten, imprisoned and eventually deported; another lifedefining moment.
John was now Izebo. He decided to live on his art, almost compulsively, often making his brushes, creating own pigments, and applying them to any surface from Styrofoam to palm husks to wood offcuts. His singular dramatic murals were on guard-walls, palings and buildings across the island, sometimes the entire interior of houses. His first mural in the Pine Housing Area was painted over, those in Deacons Housing Area have been defaced by electric meters and his masterpiece in Temple Yard bulldozed, all by state agencies. He was commissioned by individuals and cheated when done. His value was beaten down to the price of a spliff. He took refuge with the brethren in Temple Yard and slept on the patio of the boarded-up Queens Park Gallery, an irony very lost on the art establishment, as one of his works is in the Barbados National Art Collection. In 2011, Izebo was one of ten people Penelope Hynam of Sea Weaver Productions and Pelle Hybbinette, a Swede living in Barbados, captured in their documentary-shorts series, A Day in a Bajan Life,10 episodes that were broadcast on CBC-TV8 in 2012 and 2013, and screened at film festivals in Barbados, Los Angeles (USA), Sweden and Toronto (Canada). Izebo painted until the day he took ill. He did not recover. He died in hospital on 20 th November 2012. When his family was unable to give him a proper burial Penelope Hynam mobilized the artists community and he was “sent off” in 20l3 with a memorable Rastafarian ceremony. A digital catalogue will be created for the exhibitions, copies of which will be made available to the exhibiting artists.
The 15th edition of CARIFESTA’s Visual Arts seeks to tell these stories via a series of regional exhibitions which will be mounted to collectively showcase the exceptional Caribbean and Diasporic talents that speak to aspects of our past, present and future. Submissions are invited in various media: contemporary works in a digital format, new media as well as more traditional approaches. Artists that use materials from their environment such as textiles, pebbles, tin cans, roots and other organic materials are encouraged to submit. “This is art that speaks to experience” (Yinka Shonibare) TO SUBMIT Artworks that explore notions of our path to freedom under the broad festival theme: Caribbean Roots, Global Excellence should be selected - A maximum of 5 images of artworks per artist should be emailed (in .jpeg or .png file) to the CARIFESTA Coordinating entity of each participating country (Ministry of Culture or its designee) - Please note: o None of the work should be older than 10 years old. o The image submitted should have the Title of the work, dimensions, value in USD and media included. The artist must indicate their name, country, email address and a short 200 word bio with their submission . o These must be submitted to the artists’ Coordinating Office for CARIFESTA XV participation by May 30th, 2025 NATIONAL JURY Each participating country is invited to convene a national jury of 3 persons with knowledge of traditional and contemporary art. The jury should be chosen locally. The national jury would select the 5 most outstanding artists whose submitted images represent excellent examples of work that speak to the theme. The digital images of the artworks selected must be forwarded by the relevant country’s coordinating office to the regional jury in Barbados.
REGIONAL JURY The portfolio of images of the selected works must be submitted via email to the CARIFESTA XV Secretariat, Attn Janice Whittle by June 15th, 2025 for final review. EMAIL: janicew.carifestabarbados@gmail.com Final selections will be made by a regional CARIFESTA XV jury comprising respected visual arts professionals from our region and its diaspora. All artists whose work has been submitted for this review, and their coordinating national agencies will be notified of the outcome of the Final review by June 21st 2025 RECEIPT, INSTALLATION AND RETURN OF ARTWORK Artists whose work has been selected for the CARIFESTA XV regional exhibitions should have their work arrive in Barbados in the indicated timeframe. Each participating country is responsible for the delivery of the artwork to the CARIFESTA XV Secretariat, Barbados (preferably via air cargo) by July 22nd for facilitation of clearance and installation at the exhibition site. Selected Artwork will be installed in one of the CARIFESTA XV regional exhibitions by the host organizers for the duration of the Festival. All works will be insured for the period July -Sept. while in Barbados. Works may be offered for sale. At the end of the Festival, all artworks will be returned to the artist or the designated official in the National delegation for return to the country of origin.

How It Happened I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed. What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting. The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information. Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun. The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this.
