The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies. I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page. I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on. “Risée Chaderton-Charles, our guest artist from Barbados presents ‘Caribbean Atlantean’, a new series of digital collage pieces created by merging photography, digital illustration, text, and watercolour which tell the stories of Africans who jumped from the slave ships - who chose the water instead of the world of colonizers. Risée Chaderton-Charles is a photographer and digital artist with over 25 years of experience in art photography, wedding photography, portrait photography, and photojournalism, encompassing work in Barbados, Trinidad, and New York. Her recent work incorporates physical media, photography, digital collage, and digital illustration — built on a foundation of photography, painting, and sketching… but all used to tell stories. Her academic training includes a diploma in Cultural Studies, and she currently lectures in photography at a tertiary level, teaching both the mechanics of photography and the role of photography in culture and social commentary. There is room below : Risée Chaderton-Charles Her fine-art and journalistic work reflect her interest in history and social issues, with specific focus on Black Caribbean women, and the understanding of their own worth and agency. Caribbean Atlantean is a series of digital collage pieces created by merging photography, digital illustration, text, and watercolour in a unique way. Chaderton-Charles combines her years of experience as a photographer with her fine art skills and her love of history to create underwater worlds, illustrating stories that are often untold and glossed over. Caribbean Atlantean tells the stories of Africans who jumped from the slave ships — who chose the water instead of the world of colonizers.
The Atlanteans become goddesses and ancestors, and are woven into the folklore of Caribbean people. The images are overlaid with archival documents and the writings of modern Caribbean voices. A quote from Dr Karen Lord’s layered contemporary novel “The Blue, Beautiful World” is incorporated into “And Now We Are Free”. Angry public comments on race are incorporated into “Small Up Yourself”. Maps and archival illustrations are incorporated into “There Is Room Below”. Caribbean Atlantean is a visual voyage from the western coast of Africa, through time and across an ocean. to the shores of the Caribbean “My work is like a mosquito, a buzzing in your ear that inspires a frantic search for the source and the meaning of the noise. It is art that creates anticipation of potential discomfort as the viewer moves through the visual space. Art doesn’t have to be pleasant, art does not have to be comfortable, art doesn’t even have to be pretty but art should cause reaction, and my challenge is to make the audience see into the dark, dusty corners of our shared history. Barbados and the region have lost a legend. The words of Prime Minister Mia Mottley as she paid tribute to the late Patrick Michael Foster, legendary artist, playwright, actor, director and author. She said Foster was one of the ‘very special individuals’ who walked among us, and his passing will leave a huge void in many areas of our national creative enterprise. Born in Guyana, Foster received his education in Trinidad and Tobago and the United Kingdom and spent the majority of his adult life living and working in Barbados. The prime minister said his diverse background and regional journey shaped a body of work that reflected the Caribbean’s cultural richness and African heritage. “Whether it is through his sketches or paintings, his writing or his directing, his acting or on-air adventures, Patrick has left a body of work, a legacy of creativity, that provides a rich cultural playbook of Caribbean life as the perfect guide for any young and aspiring thespian. I considered myself lucky to have been exposed to different aspects of his work from a very young age.” Despite the well-known exploits of other family members, Foster forged his own path by drawing on the region’s folklore. The prime minister noted that his approach brought authenticity and originality to the Caribbean stage and screen. “I am confident that the works he has left behind will sustain our appetite for the highest quality offerings of the arts for years to come. It is my wish that those who worked with Patrick in the creative industry, as well as those at the National Cultural Foundation and other state agencies charged with the promotion and preservation of our culture, will use the occasion of his passing to do what we have not done as well as we could have while he walked among us: ensure that young Barbadians are offered unparalleled exposure to the creative genius of this adopted Bajan.” In 2023, Foster was recognised with the Earl Warner Trust Lifetime Achievement Award at an event hosted by the Earl Warner Trust (Barbados) and the Faculty of Culture, Creative and Performing Arts at The University of the West Indies Cave Hill campus. Earlier this year, his work was featured in an exhibition at the Queen’s Park Gallery, presented by the National Cultural Foundation, further highlighting his impact on Barbados’ artistic heritage. It is a vibrant showcase of the Caribbean’s creative spirit and cultural unity. Since its inception in 1972, CARIFESTA has travelled across the region, hosted by large countries and small islands, each showcasing its unique cultural finesse to the festival. To date, CARIFESTA has been held in over 12 Caribbean countries, debuting in Guyana in 1972. Since then the event has been hosted in Jamaica, Cuba, Trinidad & Tobago, Suriname, Haiti, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Barbados, among others. Each territory adds new innovations to the legacy of the festival, reflecting the socio-political climate and cultural aspirations of the period.
Barbados first hosted the festival in 1981 (CARIFESTA IV), and again in 2017 (CARIFESTA XIII). Now, eight years later, the island is preparing to stage CARIFESTA XV from August 22nd – August 31st, solidifying its position as a cultural leader in the region. THREE ERAS, ONE ISLAND • 1981 – CARIFESTA IV At just 15 years post-Independence, Barbados hosted CARIFESTA for the first time. It was a period of strong institution-building and national identity formation. The festival emphasized the power of culture in shaping the post-colonial Caribbean and deepened regional cultural ties at a time when the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) was still in its formative years. • 2017 – CARIFESTA XIII Returning to the island after 36 years, the 2017 edition came amid a global renaissance of Caribbean culture, particularly in music, film, and digital media. The festival embraced modern technology and a broader definition of Caribbean identity, including youth engagement, diaspora participation, and the emergence of creative industries as engines of growth. It also took place as the region wrestled with climate resilience and sustainable development. • 2025 – CARIFESTA XV The third hosting comes just three years after Barbados transitioned to a Parliamentary Republic in 2022, marking a significant step in its post-colonial journey. CARIFESTA XV aligns with a renewed national vision focused on innovation, climate action, and cultural diplomacy. This edition presents a powerful opportunity for Barbados to reintroduce itself to the region and the world — not just as a beautiful island, but as a creative powerhouse shaping the future of Caribbean identity.
WHY THIS MATTERS Hosting CARIFESTA three times is more than a badge of honour. It is a reflection of Barbados’ longstanding commitment to regionalism, cultural excellence, and the creative economy. It reaffirms the island’s readiness to provide a world-class stage for the region’s finest artists, performers, thinkers, and storytellers. “In 1981, Barbados was a young nation forging its post-Independence identity,” said a spokesperson for the CARIFESTA XV Secretariat. “In 2017, the island embraced a new era of digital and creative innovation. Now in 2025, as a Parliamentary Republic since 2022, Barbados is again ready to host the region, and the world, at a time when culture, sustainability, and innovation are central to our national mission.” CARIFESTA XV will serve as a platform to highlight the vibrancy of Caribbean traditions, while also spotlighting emerging talents and trends in music, theatre, film, fashion, literature, and visual arts. It will feature pavilions from across the region, a Grand Market, symposiums, youth events, and collaborative showcases. The festival is expected to boost cultural tourism, foster inter-island partnerships, and offer economic opportunities for local creatives, artisans, and entrepreneurs. As the countdown begins, Barbados stands poised to open its arms once again to the Caribbean and the world for what promises to be an unforgettable celebration of heritage, innovation, and connection.

How It Happened I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed. What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting. The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information. Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun. The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this. Our Mission To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries. The Role of the NCF The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions. FUNCTIONS of the NCF are: To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government To organize cultural festivals Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.
