The Barbados Arts Events page was created to promote the Visual Arts Events in Barbados and artists whether exhibiting here in island or overseas.
The focus is on the events for the fine arts, encompassing art, photography, sculpture and installations, gallery receptions, exhibitions, talks, interviews, workshops, publications, studios, residencies.
I will also post visual art collaborations with writers, theatre, dance, videos, music and creatives but it has to encompass the visual arts/artists to be posted on this page.
I started this page because I felt that the visual arts were not getting much needed exposure to expose the talent in Barbados and around the world. I wish I could encompass all the creative arts as there is so much happening on this tiny wonderful island of ours but I am a one woman band doing this free. Over the years this page has become a support for all creative events in Barbados and I was happy for this but realised that it was diluting the fine arts section which it is meant to focus on.
I need to bring the focus back in these group pages to the visual arts.
Thank you for understanding.

Congratulations to Barbadian artist Versia Harris who was selected to commemorate and create a work depicting Barbadian National Hero and one of All Souls College (Oxford, UK ) first black fellows(1962) Sir Hugh Worrell Springer (1913 - 1994). He was a lawyer, organiser and first general secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union.
Two years ago I was selected to commemorate Barbadian National Hero and one of All Souls College’s first black fellows(1962) Sir Hugh Worrell Springer (1913 - 1994). He was a lawyer, organiser and first general secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union.
During the Black Lives Matter protest in Oxford (2020), All Souls Library, formerly known as The Codrington Library, became of particular interest because its name and the statue of Christopher Codrington at its center. Codrington, was Barbadian plantation owner who endowed the library in the 1700s with the fortune made from his plantations and enslaved labour. The protest sparked a series of conversations, lectures, and programs demanding an end to the memorialization of such historical figures and reckoning with the legacy of their bequests. The library was renamed and one of the projects to come out of the discussions that followed was to commission a Barbadian artist to create a portrait /memorial dedicated to one their fellows who is also a descendant of the enslaved peoples of Barbados.
Beyond the significance of his birthplace and educational tether to All Souls, Sir High Springer led a significant life in his own right. He was the first registrar of the University of West Indies, Jamaica, and later its Director. He had 15 honorary degrees and was a champion of education in his country. He ended his astonishing career as the Governor General of Barbados.
Challenging the tradition of portrait statues and white marble busts, a tradition in which the Codrington statue and most other memorials at the college fall under, I wanted to create a work that spoke symbolically to his life and his relationship with his community. “

The camera has been my license to create and to capture light, colour, form and textures
It has allowed me to examine my environment in detail and to capture life's moments utilising unique perspectives and creative alchemy to create compositions that inspire a degree of thought and at times quiet moments of reflection
Your magic lies within your ability to effortlessly reveal the beauty within the mundane. The way you elevate all that you touch. In particular, the manner in which you breathe life and movement into a scene. The dramatic and deliberate fashion in which you create shadow; when you illuminate from the dark there's nothing more beautiful. When you are extinguished it signifies good times are behind us and solitude and slumber are upon us..

Annalee Davis exhibiting in ‘As Land Remembers’
11 July – 22 August 2025
Marian Goodman Gallery, NYC, USA
My contribution, a series of ten textile works crafted at Walkers Dairy, Barbados, once a sugar plantation, draws from daily walks, eco-dyeing, and materials foraged from my surroundings. Cerasee, motherwort, bearded fig tree vines, bamboo stalks and shak-shak pods combine with tea-stained and turmeric-tinted linen hymnsheets as quiet offerings. Threads and appliqué trace rituals of tending and remembering, with each piece acting as a secular prayer to and with the land itself.
In the spirit of Denniston Hill’s radical hospitality, where the rural is reimagined as a site of refuge and collective inquiry, An Unbound Book of Prayer engages with land as a living archive, acknowledging its role in holding both trauma and renewal.

Patrick Michael Foster June 27th 1942 - July 4th 2025. May he rest in peace. He soars with the angels now.
Barbados and the region have lost a legend. The words of Prime Minister Mia Mottley as she paid tribute to the late Patrick Michael Foster, legendary artist, playwright, actor, director and author. She said Foster was one of the ‘very special individuals’ who walked among us, and his passing will leave a huge void in many areas of our national creative enterprise.
Born in Guyana, Foster received his education in Trinidad and Tobago and the United Kingdom and spent the majority of his adult life living and working in Barbados. The prime minister said his diverse background and regional journey shaped a body of work that reflected the Caribbean’s cultural richness and African heritage.
“Whether it is through his sketches or paintings, his writing or his directing, his acting or on-air adventures, Patrick has left a body of work, a legacy of creativity, that provides a rich cultural playbook of Caribbean life as the perfect guide for any young and aspiring thespian. I considered myself lucky to have been exposed to different aspects of his work from a very young age.”
Despite the well-known exploits of other family members, Foster forged his own path by drawing on the region’s folklore. The prime minister noted that his approach brought authenticity and originality to the Caribbean stage and screen.
“I am confident that the works he has left behind will sustain our appetite for the highest quality offerings of the arts for years to come. It is my wish that those who worked with Patrick in the creative industry, as well as those at the National Cultural Foundation and other state agencies charged with the promotion and preservation of our culture, will use the occasion of his passing to do what we have not done as well as we could have while he walked among us: ensure that young Barbadians are offered unparalleled exposure to the creative genius of this adopted Bajan.”
In 2023, Foster was recognised with the Earl Warner Trust Lifetime Achievement Award at an event hosted by the Earl Warner Trust (Barbados) and the Faculty of Culture, Creative and Performing Arts at The University of the West Indies Cave Hill campus. Earlier this year, his work was featured in an exhibition at the Queen’s Park Gallery, presented by the National Cultural Foundation, further highlighting his impact on Barbados’ artistic heritage. Patrick Michael Foster — renown visual artist, thespian and long-standing pillar in the Bajan cultural community — will be deeply missed. Fresh Milk extends our heartfelt condolences to his friends and family, with whom we join in mourning the loss of such a dedicated soul who enlivened those around him.
Memories of his time spent at the Fresh Milk studio hold a special place in our heart, where he supported Matthew Kupakwashe Murrell (@kupathecreator) during our Emerging Directors Residency in collaboration with @thencfbarbados, alongside Luci Hammond (@de.bajan.feminist) and Na La (@the2dollarphilosopher).
Patrick embodied a lifelong commitment to young, aspiring theatre directors and actors, propelling the vision of a local cultural community nurtured by many generations. May his soul rest in perpetual peace ”️

Last night, late, early a.m. in fact, 12.33, was ragged, drained, dried, tried, tired enough not to sleep. Over extended. Over exaggerated. Cha. Headache such a thin silver line that it was acupunturous. Past grumpy. Past complaint. Yawned out. Past tears of frustration. Past frailty. Actually, POWERFUL with it. Meditation. Steel. Spaceship fired into svelte dimensions, smoothed by wind, soothed by rain, sailing sleek into sultry space, piercing asunder the black hole that embraced light, shattering the complaints which brought me here, turning them around, rebirthing sad tidings into glad, scattering them like asteroids spinning spinning spinning into stars. Then all was calm. Captain of my vessel, Identified Flying Object One, I viewed a vast and endless, so beautiful horizon called 1 eh em. I finished a cup of steaming ginger tea, checked out the FB Show and answered the # 1 question"What are you doing right now" one time : "Let us be heroes" - a wish to the universe for ... who d'you think? You? Me? Us? It certainly wasn't a challenge. None can crown oneself hero. None can assume the title. Those who are heroes don't even aspire to the title; they are what they are, do what they do, and many of them are never recognized. And each of us has our role as potential hero, by just living and possessing soul, being together on this mortal coil. It sure was a reminder to myself, saying, "I'm alive," to myself. It chased the chaff. It seemed, encompassing all that it implies, a gentle request, a pure prayer for all my friends. And in it I felt peace, love, like a gentle nudge in the right direction, not the wishy washy kind. And I thought especially of four friends, all much younger than I, who'd separately noticed that my headlights weren't on full and perhaps that I was driving on empty recently, on certain occasions. Each of them fueled my energy, touched my heart, fed my soul, like heroes. They woke me up, tank full, battery charged. It was a thank you to them, a recognition. Offered up. Out there. "Let us be heroes."
Patrick Foster.
The National Cultural Foundation joins the artistic community in honouring the life and legacy of Patrick Foster — a creative legend, a quiet force, and a beloved son of the Caribbean.
Born to a Guyanese mother and a Barbadian father, Patrick’s life stretched across continents, but nearly fifty years ago he made a defining decision: to return home to the Caribbean and root his journey in Barbados. It was a choice that changed the cultural landscape of this island forever. Patrick was more than a multi-talented artist. His work as actor, playwright, director, painter and author was marked by depth, compassion, and an unshakable belief in the value of Caribbean voices. He didn’t just create art — he nurtured it, lived it, and generously shared it.
To those who knew him, Patrick was an advisor and an ally, a teacher and a friend. In recent times he worked closely with the NCF. Whether leading workshops with fellow thespian Sonia Williams, who also recent left us, directing the staged reading of Luci Hammans’ “Who Diablesse”, or shaping the radio drama “How Hard The Times”, written by Michelle Hinskon-Cox and Anthony Hinkson, his touch was always thoughtful, always substantial, always with deep insight.
His recent exhibition Life Line, hosted at the Queen’s Park Gallery, was a testament to the enduring power of his artistic soul.
Patrick gave Barbados not just his talent, but his heart. And in doing so, he inspired generations. The Board of Management, Chief Executive Officer, and Staff of the National Cultural Foundation extend their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late Patrick Foster and the local artistic fraternity.
May he rest in peace
“There are those whose lives remind us that identity is not bound by geography, but shaped by heritage, experience, and the choices we make about where we belong. Patrick Foster was one such individual.
Born to a Guyanese mother and a Barbadian father, Patrick’s roots were firmly planted in the Caribbean, though his early journey took him to England, where he spent a significant part of his life. Yet it was nearly five decades ago that he made a defining choice — to return to the region and make Barbados his home. That decision marked the beginning of an extraordinary chapter of service to culture, to art, and to community.
Patrick Foster was not only a man of many talents — he was a man of depth, discipline, and unwavering creative vision. As an actor, playwright, director, painter, and author, he devoted his life to telling stories that mattered. His work, in all its forms, reflected a deep sensitivity to the human condition and a strong belief in the importance of Caribbean narratives.
In choosing Barbados as the place to live, work, and create, Patrick became a vital part of the island’s artistic life. His contributions spanned generations and genres, and his influence could be felt both on stage and behind the scenes. He was a mentor, a collaborator, a quiet leader — someone whose presence elevated every project, and whose guidance shaped countless careers.
Patrick Foster’s legacy is not just in the art he made, but in the values he embodied: authenticity, curiosity, generosity, and care for craft. He understood the power of storytelling not only to entertain, but to preserve, to question, and to connect. His passing is a deep loss to Barbados and to the wider Caribbean arts community.
On behalf of the President, Board of Directors and Members of Barbados Film & Television Association, we pay tribute to his extraordinary life and career. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all who had the honour of knowing and working with him.”

“Patrick Michael Foster.
“Dah-ling” are we writing you in past tense right now?
Actor, Playwright, Phenomenal visual artist, Folklorist… Caribbean lover of Ms Munroe... It breaks our heart deep, deep deeeeeeep because you mentored us, heard us cry on telephone, gave advice, sang at we wedding and was just force in every. You never said no to a student and always wanted to push the arts community wherever you could.
We always thought you to be such a quiet force in our lives. That little smirk of mischief as you danced with Papa Bois and La Diablesse, or hollering at de Baku in you studio… Man… this hurts too much to go on.
Rest our dear dear friend and performance mentor. Our heart breaks in ways that words and prints cannot conjure at this time. The Gully is yours...
We love you Patrick. Always and in all ways…
Three times we risked for the Caribbean Renaissance, and did not miss... well that last one we laughed afterward and agreed was a terrible experiment! But we laughed and I learned. You were generous like that.
1
When Luci Hammans and I (NCF Theatre Officer, producing then) visited you to entreat you to direct her new play "Who Diablesse" we debated all the issues around our collective heritage. But who else would be best for this? In the end you went for it. Daphne Joseph-Hackett Theatre was sold out (standing room only) that Sunday morning. What a success!
2
I would always admire your "Smile Orange" programme cover which featured theatre great Andrea Gollop-Greenidge. You would post it from time to time. So, on her passing, and as Cultural Officer, Theatre Arts, NCF, I insisted that you were commissioned to do a memorial portrait for her Tribute Show. It held pride of place at the top of the stairs, the first thing we saw before entering the theatre. Lovely!
3
The Gap Theatre gave me space to devise the experiment that was "Arte Farte Gully," which lamented the disappearance of the folk masquerades. 3 actors who also paint. You chose Shaggy Bear as your character. You all created self-portraits as part of the exercise. It was about what the soul required for art. Again, we examined our collective heritage. Your beautiful Caribbean spirit!
I will always love you, Patrick Michael Foster, a wonderful and fearless collaborator. Rest in peace.

June 27th , 1942 – July 4th , 2025
“Aged ten, on an inland safari with my parents and siblings, I climbed to the top of Kaieteur Falls in Guyana’s Interior. Both spiritually and sensually, the Interior left an indelible birthmark on my creative imaginary.
Barbados, my paternal home, may not have the Jungle. Set aside from the rest of the island necklace though, she eastwardly faces the elements head-on, in the form of a mighty ocean which, significantly, leads to Africa. Guyana and Barbados in conjunction offer me a rich creative tapestry. I embrace both.
The language I speak is English. I am not.”

I have, for so many years, wanted to create a free online reference book where anyone, in any part of the world, may access the creative people in Barbados. I could not do this on my own and Kathy Yearwood heard of my idea, offered to partner with me and I happily agreed.
What started out in March as a small book of what I thought might be a maximum of one hundred and fifty pages turned into a tome of over three hundred pages. A mixture of excitement and fear at what we had taken on. And here we are in December 2011 with a book showing off the talents in Barbados. So exciting.
The eight month adventure began. Finding artists, photographing them and their work. From March 2011 to October 2011 Kathy and I collated the artwork, the bios and statements and travelled around the island garnering images and information.
Large collections of artwork in homes. Convincing people who thought they were too old and forgotten and watching them smile as their work was photographed and having them talk about themselves so that we could create a bio for them. Literally slipping down the hills of clay at Chalky Mount to see an original kiln and spend the day with the potters. Temple Yard with the Rastafarian community where they are blessed with talent, especially carving, and then coming away with gifts of pineapples and avocados. Photographing in the rain with an umbrella in one hand and a camera in the other to get the right angles. Going to openings and craft shows and talking to many. Coming to my home, going to Kathy’s, and going wherever was needed. Meeting the different personalities in so many locations as I photographed many of them for their portrait photo for the book. Remembering some who have left us. A labour of love, learning and fun.
The thank you part as I could not have done this on my own. Norma Springer who encouraged me to “take the book and run with it”. Kathy Yearwood who offered to partner with me collating and to create the book for artists in Barbados. Alison Chapman-Andrews for helping Kathy and I proof read. Amazing how much you miss no matter how many times we went over it. Sue Bain for offering her professional opinion and suggestions as a copy editor. Peter Boos for all the encouragement. Laura Lin Hutchinson for her introduction. Finally, the most important people, the creative souls who put their trust in Kathy and I to show them off to their best. I hope we have done this.

“Hi! Welcome To Antillean Gallery of Art!
My name is Jeena Chatrani and I recently started Antillean Gallery with the intention of promoting and selling art from Caribbean artists online.
I'm an artist myself and I've found that the art scene in Barbados could greatly benefit from some online presence. For the last 6 years I've been a full time artist and have had to learn a lot about the business behind selling art. It's not easy to make it as an artist but it is so fulfilling.
With Antillean Gallery of Art I hope to help raise the standard of art and artists in Barbados, and eventually across the Caribbean.”

Our Mission
To fuel the development of culture through training, research and the creation of opportunities in cultural industries.
The NCF’s two major roles are: developmental and commercial. In its developmental role, the Foundation uses culture as a tool for national development fostering and supporting the various art forms and new cultural products. In its commercial role, the Foundation is responsible for the promotion, production and hosting of cultural festivals and associated events that are considered economically viable or socially acceptable. A key part of this function now includes the responsibility for the staging and execution of major governmental and national events. In addition, as culture becomes more pivotal to national and international policy, the National Cultural Foundation continues to re-assess its responsibilities in light of all its functions.
of the NCF are:
To stimulate and facilitate the development of culture generally
To develop, maintain and manage theatres and other cultural facilities and equipment provided by Government
To organize cultural festivals
Assist persons interested in developing cultural expression.
To provide opportunities for Barbadian artists/artistes to showcase their talents with the end result being an increased demand for local work
To educate Barbadians concerning their heritage
To offer Barbadians and visitors alike a high quality product that informs, educates and entertains
To equip our cultural workforce with technological skills and training to excel in their particular art forms
To strengthen the local cultural product and in the process increase profits to the shareholders

“Somewhere, amid the darkness, a painter measures a blank canvas, a poet tests a line aloud, a songwriter brings a melody into tune. Art inspires, provokes thought, reflects beauty and pain. I seek it out even more in these times. And in so doing, I find hope in the human spirit.”
