Dear Key Clubbers, Hello Everyone! I hope you all are having a fantastic December thus far! I’m still in shock at how incredibly fast the year is going by! Who would have known that Winter Break would be here so soon? So little time, so many accomplishments waiting to happen! For the month of December, we’ve been much occupied with certain events that benefitted our club and the community! One of the highlights of the month would be our collaboration with Interact Club for the Talent Show held at Coronado High School! The talent show benefitted the “ENDPOLIONOW” Project and we raised so much in the end! We were very lucky to be able to offer our help as a club! Though that may have been an accomplishment to us in collaboration, Key Club in general this month has continued to grow more with service each month. Many inspiring members join together to help gather goods for those in need! Members giving out such things as can foods, gift cards, and baby bounty products! We are very appreciative of all the donations because they will benefit a lot for someone’s life! I hope you all continue to support our community even through our cozy Winter Break! But as for now, here is the new edition of “The Cougar Claw” for the month of December! Thank you everyone and happy holidays!

"Matt Villanueva is the November Member of the Month! Matt has been a member since his freshman year! Now a sophomore, he has been so dedicated towards Key Club! He was the only member apart of Coronado Key Club's spirit committee, and we are also so grateful for his dedication. Matt has always attended events like our elementary school festivals and at the Henderson Pavilion. Matt has also been hard working for our division. He dedicated much of his time gathering over one hundred dollars for trick-or-treat for UNICEF as well! Although he did not go to Fall Rally, Matt was one of the few consistent people who helped with the Fall Rally supplies. Coronado Key Club is very proud to have Matt Villanueva as member of the month! (:"

“On Friday, December 7th, Coronado Key Club and Interact Club teamed up to host the first annual Talent Show for EndPolioNow! In the beginning, this talent show started out in the summer. President Aaron Laforteza and I worked distinctly hard for this talent show to help the organization of EndPolioNow succeed. After plans were being made, it was time to find acts for the dire talent show. Interact Club and Key Club worked together to find talented people during a very short three day week. Along with thirty people who signed up to audition, members from both Interact and Key Club were excited to help work during the talent show, sell tickets, and or advertise! Flyers, features on our school's news, and dedication made this talent show bigger than it actually was! Concessions, hilarious and soulful acts, and donating to a good cause made the First Coronado Talent Show a huge success. In the end, both clubs put together over $300 in cash with most of the profits going to help the EndPolioNow Project! With much deidcation and plans, many enjoyed the talent show, and some are eager to participate next year as well!

“The Basic DCM was a very thrilling experience. Though Coronado had to return Chubby Chung from being Club of the Month last year, we were very humbled and ecstatic to give the fellow panda to Basic! During the DCM, we were first introduced to the C.U.B.S granting wishes to those of the division. Luckily, Secretary A, RJ Immerman of Coronado, was granted the wish of In-N-Out fries and In-N-Out shake. The C.U.B.S granted different wishes for many others as well, and it was LTG Nicky Chung's way of saying happy holidays! We then were addressed about DCON and as well as division and district contests. Many of the officers and members were anticipating for the talk of District Convention and as well as the district and division awards. Though the date for awards is far ahead of us, RJ and I discussed to plan early and as well start during the holiday break! The Basic DCM also ended with various foods that made my mouth water. From pizza to brownies, the Basic DCM served great food to end a great night.”

Thank you to all the members that volunteered/and or participated in at the following events:   

“The holidays always bring certain memories that could never forget. I just love the mindset of family gathering, giving to others, and winter being one of the happiest times of the year. My family celebrates Christmas, and as we do every year, we hang Christmas lights and the Christmas tree together. Decorating is one of the happiest things I do for the holidays! The Christmas tree is essential in my family since we've had the same one for eight years in a row! It is a gentle treasure that I love dearly. This eight year old tree has been in our family since I was nine and one of the best gifts I ever gotten. When we got the tree, my sister and I were expecting to get a tree that was about four to five feet tall fake tree. My mother never really liked real Christmas trees, and my sister and I always wanted a tree that had lights and could rotate! Luckily one day after my first grade class, my sister and I walked upon our house to find a seven foot tree standing out our door! We were elated, and so happy our parents could provide us such a gracious and marvelous tree! To this day the tree works like it was new, and although many memories were made with this tree, including my dogs consistently peeing on them or my sister breaking certain ornaments and such, the tree makes the holidays memorable! Winter break is finally coming, and I am finally excited to be with my family and friends that I care for immensely. I also cannot wait for the New Year to be present!”

“Since it's usually just my mom and I, we don't usually celebrate Christmas. All we do is shop and eat, stay home; as if it was average day. To be honest, I've never had a Christmas tree, nor have I decorated one. I can't seem to remember the best present I've gotten. During Christmas, my mom tends to be more nice, which is a big relief for me. I'm fine with how I celebrate Christmas right now! For Winter Break, I'm going to be sleeping in all day.I can't wait to sit at home, eat, play games, and get fat. I'm going to be a lazy bum. I'm also excited to hang out with my friends, and I can't wait for the countdown to 2013. Unfortunately, we're all going to die on the 21st of December. Happy Holidays Key Club!”

“Over the years I have received many great presents. If I had to pick one to be the best I would have to say getting a Playstation 2 when I was eleven was probably the coolest thing ever. I remember opening it up and just screaming. Winter break is a great time for me. Getting to make up for lost sleep is absolutely amazing. Call me weird but I actually do study over winter break for semester exams. However, I feel that the part I enjoy most is just having all of my family over at our house. Just the spirit that is in the air is really enjoyable, and I love being able to spend time with family from out of town that I don't get to see very much.”

“When I was a child, I never really had a favorite gift from Christmas. I was thankful for everything I received and I was very happy with all of my presents. I appreciate what I have gotten for Christmas over the years and I loved all of my gifts equally. What I love about Winter Break: SLEEP! Since schoolwork keeps me up during some nights, I constantly feel tired. I’m looking forward to sleeping in and having freedom from homework for two weeks. Most of all, I’m excited to spend time with my family during the break. I always enjoy bonding and relaxing with them when we have free time. I can’t wait for Winter Break to arrive!”

“The best present I have received was one full week with my awesome cousins at this cabin we rented in the woods. We had so much fun, played with the snow, went around and had campfires. It's always great to spend time with your family as much as you can! I will never forget that week, I created so many memories with them. What I enjoy about winter break is the fact that I can procrastinate as much as I can- just kidding. It's fun seeing fireworks the last day of the year, and just pretty much those moments the people around you go crazy when the year is about to end, it's just a great feeling. Let's not also forget the fact that we can wake up later than usual, because there is no school and no homework to worry about!”

“Over the course of time, I still remember all the good moments spent during the holiday season. I always appreciated the scenery, the weather, and gatherings. As a young child, I always enjoyed celebrating Christmas with my family. The gift I clearly remember the most would be a Barney I received from my parents. The joy upon my face when I opened it still makes me smile when I think about it. I was a huge Barney fan if you haven’t guessed already. I was probably around the age of two which makes it understandable for my excitement. But now here I am, waiting upon the seventh Christmas I would be celebrating this year. It’s kind of saddening realizing how different each Christmas has been as time progresses. This year would probably be considered to be the most “matured” Christmas. My siblings and I growing up in a fast pace made it more independent on celebration. We do have gatherings of spending the day together, but it’s not the same as a two year old on Christmas day. Presents are still there, but not the entire family together. Even though it may appear like that this year, I will still appreciate what I am given. I love winter break and all the time given to celebrate with family friends. I am grateful for everything! I hope you all have a fantastic Winter Break!”

“I'd have to say that the best present I have ever received was a new car I got from my parents for Christmas. I was shocked, surprised, happy, confused, filled with joy, and ecstatic all at the same time when I opened the garage of my house to see the car for my first time. I was even more confused and surprised because I hadn't even gotten my license yet and my parents hadn't given any hints about getting me a car. So I wondered if the car in the garage was even mine, but all my questions were answered when I walked into my house and I saw my smiling parents. This gift meant a lot to me because of its financial cost to my parents, the fact that it was new, and it sort of represented that I was growing up. I would be driving myself and others where ever and going home without my parents' presence- a freedom I've never really experienced up until this point. My first car is definitely a gift I'll remember receiving for the rest of my life. I really enjoy the festivity, cheer, and joyous atmosphere of Winter break. It's not the same joy and fun that summer break has, because winter brings cheer of giving to others, and being with others, and just being a nice person overall. I really just enjoy spending time with my friends and family, letting all conflicts go, and being jolly.”

“Christmas is always is always a hectic time for my family but it is nothing better than running down the stairs to see what Santa got me. My best present I got was my ipad. I received it last year and I know that I will be able to use it for the rest of my life. But winter break is not all about the gifts. My best part about winter break though is that almost every winter at least some or one of my family comes to town and I get to spend those short few days with the people I love. That is why Christmas is so special to me.”

“The best gift that I have was given was a Madeline doll house.

My parents spent all night setting up, and it was amazing. I still have it right above my television. I don’t think I really realized how much I loved it when I received it. Now I really appreciate all the time and love my parents put into it. Over winter break, I am sleeping and sleeping more. I also love baking cookies, so I probably will make my grandmother’s shortbread cookies and maybe some Twinkies.”

“The holidays are finally around the corner! I can finally sleep in, sleep in, and sleep in. For the first time this year, my friends and I are going to spread the holiday spirit through a Christmas party! I'm excited to spend and cherish a day with my second family as well as see their cheery faces when they receive their presents. Giving is always better than receiving. Bringing up presents, the best one I can remember receiving was this Lego house set given by my aunt. Who doesn't love legos?! Especially a set that had cute little cars, windows, and such.”

“In my childhood the holidays during the winter have always been the best time of the year.I enjoy seeing all of the presents, lights, and spirit that make up the winter holidays. One of the best presents I received when I was young was the HotWheels City Set. I'll never forget the unwrapping part of the present. As I was unwrapping the gift wrap I was screaming like a little girl and the wrapping paper was flying everywhere in the room. Overall, I enjoy Winter Break because of the holidays. I get to spend time with my family and friends, open presents, and most importantly eat a lot of the holiday food that comes with it. Happy holidays everyone!”
