It feels great to be back! I’m very excited to meet all of you guys as the new school year commences! I’m really laid back and easy to talk to, so don’t feel shy to approach me! I sincerely hope all of you attended our first meeting as there was a ton of information to go over. If you couldn’t make it, don’t sweat it! Just make sure to come to our other meetings which are every Tuesday in room 200. Don’t forget!

Sincerely, Matt Villanueva

Did YOU know?

I’m a junior and I’ve been in Key Club since my freshman year. This year I’m your Bulletin Editor/ Historian, so I’m responsible for these newsletters, videos, our website (check it out!), taking pictures at events, and making the PowerPoint at our first meeting (I hope you liked it). There’s so much I’m excited to tell you about Key Club from the events to the people you meet to the satisfaction of helping those around the community. However, I do hope that you guys don’t feel overwhelmed! I know we asked all of you to finish your application, turn in your dues, and your RTC money so soon (which I hope ALL of you attend), but trust me, it is absolutely, completely, without-a-doubt worth it! Not only will this be one of your favorite clubs (if not your favorite) but it will make your overall high-school experience that much more fulfilling! If you’re still interested in joining Key Club or you want to bring a friend, we strongly encourage you to do so. One last thing I’d like to say is to please get your money in and attend RTC. I’m not lying when I say it changed my life and will most likely do the same for you as well!

Starting off the School Year Event Name Freshman BBQ When: August 22nd Where: Coronado HS Time: 4 PM - 6 PM President Sergio Linares speaks to various incoming freshman about joining Coronado Key Club, talking about our numerous service projects and entertaining events! This year's freshman BBQ was fantastic, the new incoming high-schoolers, the returning students, and even the parents seemed happy to step into Coronado. It was a day full of spirit, joy, and hope for one of the greatest years the school has had so far. Fortunately enough, I met a lot of students throughout the day--and tried my best to recruit them. I couldn’t feel any happier with the result that day, over 80 members signing up in just two hours, and I could not think but just have a smile on my face, because I knew from that moment, that many people will have their lives changed with the introduction of Key Club.

-Sergio Linares

First Meeting - Tuesday, September 3rd The first meeting was a great way for our club to see our future Key Clubbers! Not only were we having fun talking to the current members, but we were also able to interact with new members and to get them pumped out about Key Club. Because we were able to share our passion and our love for Key Club among those that haven't been able to live through the experience, new-comers felt invigorated about signing up for our life-changing club. It was an overall wonderful experience simply because we had spread word about the magic of service.

September Events Event of Name Saturday Service When: September 7th Where: 6300 W. Oakey Blvd. Time: 8 AM – 12 PM

I attended my first key club event and it was a blast! I was able to work and get to know Sergio (club president) and Matt (bulletin editor) and many other members. Yeah it was tiring but it was fun. I can't wait for more fun, exciting days like this!

-Jake Javellana, KC Member *Photos provided by Kaitlyn Swanberg and Megan Rubino The Iron Man Triathlon was on September 8th all over the Green Valley Ranch area. The group I was in took racers’ supply bags and organized them so that after the race we could give them all of their possessions back. It was really hard work, especially in the heat. Plus the fact that some of the bags were put in wrong places and things got really disorganized. However, despite all of that I really enjoyed the event. We were able to work with other schools, such as Valley High School’s Key Club, and it was great meeting so many other volunteers and event some of the various racers!

September Events Diamond Rio Show -Friday, September 13th I volunteered at the Diamond Rio concert at the Henderson Pavilion. Fifteen members came from our club, along with many people from other organizations. We all ushered guests to their seats before the show started. Most of the members that attended were freshman, and they did a great job for their first time! I was really happy to see them interacting so easily with the guests, and they seemed to have no trouble at all with ushering. Also, it was a blast to bond with the new members and get to know them more. I would really like to volunteer at more Pavilion events with the new members in the future.

Walk in Memory,

Event Name Walk for Hope When: September 14th

The walk was a decent event. What we mostly did was walk around and back to the school. It was still a fun time meeting even more key clubbers and officers like Brenda (Vice President) and Sabrina (Secretary). We walked as a group in the hot weather and it was hard but fun. Before and after the walk, we spent our time playing Concentration and other icebreaker games. It was very fun learning more people's names at these events.

Coronado KC Freshman Member

New freshman members and returning upperclassmen introduce themselves through various “Name-Game” icebreakers before traversing the 3-mile track for the walk. Prior to the walk was a very emotional assembly to remember those who have taken their lives; this walk represented all of its participants trying to prevent more suicides.

What Does the Board Think? What advice, tips, or knowledge would you like to give to all of the freshman and new members about key club and high school in general? High school is probably one of the easiest years you will have in your life. Whether you take 6 AP classes, or 6 simple regular classes, they will be easy as long as you put effort, determination, and know how to manage your time wisely. In my opinion, students seem to not have enough time to do work due to the one thing every student goes through: procrastination. Try your best to avoid it, and I promise you, you will be sleeping early every day, and you will have time to hang out with friends along with extracurricular activities. Lastly, do not be shy! Be yourself; don't let people change who you truly are, for I am sure there will always be a group of people who accept your personality. Be unique, be yourself, and always keep a smile on your face. A positive attitude will always get you to places.

Sergio Linares, Coronado KC President First off, I want to welcome all the freshmen and new members to our club. The beginning of the school year can always be tough, but it's nothing you can't overcome. Although I am a senior now, I actually still remember my freshman year clearly because it really changed my life. Just like many others out there, I was extremely shy. Shy to the point where you would never expect me to run for a board position. However, I found myself in Key Club. It was definitely a club that had helped me grow as a leader, and helped me make many great friends. To be honest, I think a majority of my friends come from Key Club not only from our school, but other schools' Key Club as well. Schoolwork generally does not get too hard unless you procrastinate. Seriously. I know it's hard, but try to finish your homework as early as you can, and don't put it off to the side. As for friends, I believe that you will make some of your greatest friends in high school. Don't worry if things don't work out between a certain person. Life isn't perfect, and you can only do so much to make it as perfect as you can.

Brenda Tran, Coronado KC VP High school can be the most painful years of your life, but it's how you deal with them that matters. Despite the amount of work you are given, or how pointless it is, you're required to do it, so why complain about it. Never complain about work if your intention was to procrastinate on an assignment. It's high school, it was never meant to be fun 100% of the time; it's hard work, dedication, and passion that gets you through the hardest four years of your life. Be kind, have a smile on your face, work hard, and never give up despite the odds against you and you'll get somewhere worth your effort. Always believe in yourself, for it is your actions and desires that can change the world. Last, but definitely not the least, take risks; sometimes the things you're most certain about are the ones that will never leave you to an exciting life ahead of you.

Kayla Arceo, Coronado KC VP of Secretary Most of the advice I have gotten throughout high school came from Key Clubbers that I looked up to. The upperclassmen, as well as events I've attended, really taught me how to step out of my comfort zone and be confident about my decisions. When I was a freshman, I was very shy and awkward when meeting new people. Sometimes I'm still like that, but I've gotten more comfortable with talking to people and speaking in front of crowds. It's a great feeling! I want all Key Clubbers to know that everyone in the club will support each other, and no one will judge you. Meeting many new friends will help you branch out, and they will inspire you in different ways. Also, remember that schoolwork always comes first. Never fall back on your education and make the absolute most out of high school!

Sabrina Fairfoot, Coronado KC Secretary I want to begin by greeting all of the new members and the incoming freshman! You guys are going to love key club and just high school in general as long as you just give it a chance. I’ve had members come up to me already saying that they’ve made a bunch of new friends in the first two weeks of key club alone! I bring this up because I’m trying to tell you guys that out of all the lessons I’ve learned from my own mistakes and from advice from upperclassmen when I was a freshman, the biggest one would be to branch out. This is high school; get out of your comfort zone, speak to new people, learn new things, try new activities, and open up. I’m not telling you that you have to be popular or anything like that (besides no cares about that); I’m telling you to have confidence in yourself, in your decisions, and in who you are as a person, You’re going to have to mature in these 4 years more than you have in your entire life, so keep your mind open to new possibilities. School-wise, just stay calm; if you have a huge project or a huge test, if you stay calm and collected, you can think better and you’ll do a lot better. Just remember that we’re here to help because we do really care about you guys as family and want to see you succeed!

Board Submissions Advice for new-comers? That's a tough one. What I had to find out for myself is just how important school is. Sure, your parents always drill you about how "school is very important for your future," but what does that really mean? By learning and exploring, you find what you like, who you like, and the person you want to become. Clubs, sports, music, and other extracurricular activities are just as important as earning good grades. One must be balanced in order to succeed, so set yourself some free time on top of your busy schedule. Time-management is key, and if you members are ever struggling, please don't hesitate to ask one of us for help. We've been in your shoes; we know how confusing high school can be. One other thing: don't ever be afraid to be yourself. I remember trying to fit in, trying to impress everyone, but then I just did the things that I liked and made friends that way. Don't be afraid to branch out from the friends you already have from middle school. I know that it's difficult to step out of your bubble, but don't be afraid to be yourself. If someone doesn't like the way you are, then don't associate with him. Simple as that. For you juniors: this is the most difficult year of high school--not going to sugar-coat it--but I know you can do it. Work hard; it pays off. Remember: we're here to help! School is tough, so we Key Clubbers are here to help. We are a community; we are a family. We are here for you. If you can only find time in your life for one extracurricular activity, then this is the club to join, for Key Club can only be defined in one word: life-changing.

Jocelyn To, Coronado KC Treasurer I'm not going to lie high school is going to be work, but it's also the most memorable years. Time management is important, you cannot procrastinate. Break up big projects into small parts, so you can have time to do everything. Stick to key club, all the community service and the smiles you'll see will be worth it. Most importantly, try not to be shy. It will be difficult but it will help in the future I promise. Make this year, a year you won't forget!

Abbygail Feliciano, Coronado KC SAA I know high school can be pretty tough at first, but I can assure you that it gets better. You must learn how to have good time management & be able to prioritize! With high school, also comes friends. And Key Club is the perfect way to make friends! You make think it's weird to just approach a Key Clubber, but it'd actually be weird if you DON'T. Come out of your shell & make new friends! I owe it to Key Club for giving me the friends I have now. Friends make high school more enjoyable, but don't forget about your work! Prioritize, prioritize! Good luck to this year's freshmen! :)

Anne B. Reyes, Coronado KC Senior Rep The beginning of the school year is always full of stress and nerves, but do not fret! When I first joined Key Club it felt like a breath of fresh air to come every Tuesday and talk with people that I can so easily relate to. As a freshman I tried to fill my schedule up with advanced classes and several clubs; I realized, though, how important it is to prioritize and balance your life. Get a grip on the battles you choose to fight; the class work you take the initiative for and the activities you balance in the end will pay off. If you ever feel alone with a pile of work stacked on your shoulders or simply everyday stresses, I am here for you. Key Club has a lot of good people that are willing to make new friends and offer support! Have a wonderful rest of the school year. You will look back at all of your struggles and laugh! I know I have. I'll see you next Tuesday.

Ally Danlag, Coronado KC Junior Rep First of all, I am welcoming all the new members this year especially the freshmen. As a board officer, I would like to thank all the freshmen who chose to be part of Key Club; we will always make sure that you came to the right place! Key Club will give you a good start for your 1st year here in CHS since it will bring you experiences that you will never forget. All these experiences will bring honor and dignity within you for you allowed yourselves to live the club's core values. We understand that education is your main priority; however, because of your willingness to give your time, love, and dedication to this club, we will work harder for the better of KC. As for me, it was true that I joined this club due to college application. However, if you give this club a chance, you will never regret that you become part of our family. In this club, we are family, so we are trying to make each one of you to be comfortable with everyone.

Ally Danlag, Coronado KC Junior Rep
