THE COUGAR CLAW Part of the CALI-NEV-HA, Region 5, Division 28 South Family The Official Coronado Key Club Newsletter

Dear Key Clubbers,

The holidays are finally here and we all finally receive our well-deserved break from the daily stresses of school! Moreover, that doesn’t mean that we will take a break from the service, aid, teamwork, and cooperation we hope to give to our community as much as possible! As one of you officers, I strongly encourage all of you to make sure you keep up with your hours. We know that RTC and Fall Rally are now over, but Key Club is so much more than just those two events. Key Club is about leadership, character building, caring, and inclusiveness that are achieved through our unending service to the world and to those around us. I know that RTC and FRS are the events that most of you look forward too, but in reality, it’s important that we all look forward to our weekly events whether it’s cleaning up the school, raising money for charity, or assisting the elderly. With all that said, I sincerely hope that all of you have enjoyed RTC and Fall Rally, but guess what? DCON, ICON, and Key Leader still await us, so make sure you keep up with your service hours so that you can attend these wonderful events! I guarantee you’ll have just as much fun, if not more, at these annual events! Now whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or even if you celebrate the holidays in a different way, I wish all of you a great time, be safe, and enjoy you holidays for all its worth! And be ready to get right back to serving your community when you come back!

Sincerely, Matt Villanueva

December Robotics Tournament - Saturday, December 7th

Coronado Key Clubbers assist in set up, equipment supervision, and clean-up afterwards during the Coronado Robotics Tournament held at our very own school! Great job to all of the participants!

Hot Chocolate Event Name Fundraiser

When: December 9th -13th Where: Coronado HS Time: During lunch! During lunch, Coronado board members along with various other members fundraise for the Philippines by selling hot chocolate with marshmallows! I actually enjoyed volunteering throughout the week to help out our hot chocolate fundraiser! From Monday, December 9th to Friday, December 13th we sold many cups of hot chocolate, and actually sold more than we had expected! It was great being able to not only make hot chocolate for cold students during the freezing days, but also knowing that we were making money to help raise money to support the emergency efforts in the Philippines after the devastating hurricane. I believe we raised around $100 dollars, which is actually very good. I truly enjoyed working with my fellow members to support the emergency efforts!

December Desk Cleaning -Tuesday, December 10th After our club meeting on Tuesday, December 10th, the members and officers went around the school to clean teachers' desks and scrape gum under them. Although our job was not the greatest and cleanest thing to do, our teachers were very appreciative that we took the time after our meeting to lend a hand. As always, I enjoyed getting to know my fellow members even more. Just small events like these make me happy that I can be closer with my club!

Event Name CASLV Social When: December 14th Where: CASLV Time: 10 AM – 2 PM

On December 14th I attended the CASLV social during the morning until the early afternoon. I really enjoyed participating in all of the festivities with my fellow officers and members. We actually had a very good turnout to the event, which was nice. It was great getting to play ice breakers and meet people from CASLV and Basic as well! I really enjoyed the hot chocolate and all of the snacks that were provided to us! My favorite activity was probably the chickens in a hen house game! But just besides having fun, we did do a lot of different service projects, which I really liked since every member was able to find a project that they liked the most and help out in that way!

What’s The Board Think? What do you like best about the winter/ holiday season? And what's your favorite childhood memory of the winter/ holiday season? What I like best about the holiday season is that as a Key Clubber, we get to do Christmas-themed events such as caroling or participating in Christmaslights parks. Anyway, I love the holiday season because of its positive atmosphere, and of course it’s the time of giving! My favorite childhood memory is when I spent Christmas with my mother's side of the family, it was a few years ago in Peru, and I had a wonderful time. I can't wait to see them in a few days!

Sergio Linares, Coronado KC President Since I was a child, I have always been fond of the winter season. Despite living in Las Vegas without a true winter in the snow, I have learned to make the best of it. I always loved sitting in my warm house looking out at the cold season because of how much it gave me joy to see the season change. I remember a memory back when I was a child of how I always anticipated for snow to occur in this hot city. Once it did snow for a long period of time, I was astonished by this winter wonderland and loved the feeling I had when I played in the snow.

Kayla Arceo, Coronado KC VP I simply adore the loving atmosphere; everyone is joyful and happy as Christmas nears. The air is filled with kindness and laughter, joy and jubilance, excitement and wonder. Families and friends come together for the holiday season, and we get to spend time with those we aren't as fortunate to see as often. Aside from the warmth, I love coldness. I love going out into the mountains and being able to snowboard for hours each day. It's simply a wonderful time to be out and about.

Jocelyn To, Coronado KC Treasurer Overall, the winter season is my favorite time of the year because of all the holidays, winter break, and all of the jolliness spread throughout the air. It’s really a special time for me and my family and everyone around me! If I had to choose one thing that I loved most about the holiday season, I’d have to say that it’s all the extra family time I get to spend with my close ones. I actually also really love the weather, so long as it isn’t too cold! Without a doubt, I look forward to December and- January every year to celebrate the annual festivities. My favorite childhood memory of the holiday season would have to be going up to the mountains when snow finally arrived, and I’d spend the whole day in the mountains and relax in the cabins with my friends and family. Another memory I absolutely cherish would have to be going to California for Christmas one year to visit my relatives. I still remember receiving so many gifts and money, and in the end, it wasn’t really all of the materials that made me happy, but rather just the thought of my family to actually get me something!

Matt Villanueva, Coronado KC Bulletin Editor It's finally the winter and holiday season and I can't decide what I enjoy the most. It would have to be a tie between the snow on Mount Charleston, being able to spend more time with my family on break, or all the winter themed food. My favorite winter childhood memory was when I was living in Seattle. During the winter we would sled down the hills of our front and backyard of the house. After freezing outside in the snow and making snowmen, we would always end the day with hot cocoa. Happy holidays!

What’s The Board Think? The best part about the winter season is being with my family and friends in happiness. I love all the joy and happiness that the holiday season has to bring. Half of my close family lives in California, but during the holidays, we're all together, and I love it a lot! My favorite childhood memory of the holiday is when my family was all in San Francisco. We stayed up late to open presents. So in the time being, we had a lot of food & played lots of games & just bonded. It was fun! I love the holiday season!

Anne B. Reyes, Coronado KC Senior Rep

About five winters ago--when I was in sixth grade!-- a good few inches of snow fell from the sky. Everybody was smiling, the gloves, snow jackets, beanies were all pulled out. It's not snowing now, but winter has been relatively chilly here in our little city of Henderson! The winds bite and the cold stings, but every time I step outside the wintry air simply reminds me of new beginnings and fresh starts. Every day is a new day to have fun and make memories; feel the crisp breeze tomorrow and make the day worthwhile. Have a great holiday break!

Ally Danlag, Coronado KC Junior Rep

The best part of the winter/holiday season is the positive cheer that spreads through the area. It’s that time of the year where people exchange gifts and smiles spreading good joy. My favorite childhood memory is when my family used to decorate this room in my house just for the Christmas season. That room was only decorated for the holidays, and the other time of the year, it remained empty. I used to the love the transformation that took place with lights, stockings, and the tree that stood in the middle of that small room. It used to make me feel positive cheer myself.

Rosie Dumo, Coronado KC Freshmen Rep

As for myself, the best about the winter season is Christmas. Many say that it is the season to express your gratitude, to repay, to forget your hatred, and to show and give care to others. I grew up in the Philippines, and I witnessed both most of the devastating and happy events that occurred. I saw people, especially children, in the streets begged and cried for food and money in most days, but the most heartwarming that I saw during Christmas seasons was their invulnerability: they were still able to share their smile and laughs even though poverty complicates them. Furthermore, I also loved the Christmas decorations and lights that hang everywhere, and the feeling of seeing people everywhere caroling from house to house and exchanging gifts. This tradition we have would never replace any memories that I would have.
