Every parent’s worst nightmare

by ELEANOR RAPLEY Lincon Goard is described by his mother, Nicole, as a “typical Coonabarabran boy.”

At 17, he enjoys pigging and hunting with his mates, and his ute is his most prized possession. He’s a fully qualified heavy diesel mechanic and works alongside his father, Mark Goard – the sole two staff for the business, Coonabarabran Heavy Vehicle Repairs.

Lincon has played footy on and off since he was in Year 2, joining the Binnaway Bombshells for the first time in 2024 in the youth league team.

In a game against the Narromine Jets on 20 July, it was only seven minutes in when Lincon was tackled. It was described to Nicole as ‘a tackle that happens thousands of times every weekend’ but, for Lincon, he heard the crunch in his neck on impact, before his limbs went numb and quickly paralysed.

Nicole, Mark and top Sydney surgeons have praised how quickly the team trainers moved, assessing Lincon and immobilising his neck.

The ambulance had to travel from Gilgandra to Narromine and during that hour, Lincon was stabilised on the field, kept warm when his core temperature dropped and, most importantly – kept still.

A surgeon from Sydney Royal North Shore Hospital explained that had Lincon moved even a millimetre, the situation could have been far worse.

“Where he is now, we’re just so thankful to the staff here in Sydney and the people who helped him on the field,” Nicole said.

“I’ve personally rang each one of them and said ‘that was just a player on the ground, but that was our future. That was my whole world on the ground, and you gave him a future by immobilising his neck’.”

Nicole and Mark raced the ambulance to Dubbo Base Hospital, where medical staff prioritised MRI and CT scans, which revealed Lincon had broken his C4 vertebrae and dislocated his C5.

It was the dislocated C5 that had been pressing on the spinal cord and creating damage.

Lincon was then flown to Sydney by NSW Air Ambulance, accompanied by his mother, who described the journey from the airport to Royal North

Shore Hospital as a “blur”.

“There were lights and sirens flat out through the city, I don’t think I’ll ever forget that,” Nicole recalled.

The following morning, Lincon underwent a six-hour surgery to remove the broken vertebra, replaced with an artificial one, and realign the dislocated vertebra.

After what was deemed a very successful operation, Lincon was kept in an induced coma until lunch time when, upon waking, he immediately began to feel pins and needles throughout his body.

By the second day, Lincon had feeling in his left hand and leg. By the third day, both legs were moving, prompting the surgeon to tell the family, “Mate, you’re on your way to walking out of here.”

On the fifth day following his injur y, Lincon commenced physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Remarkably, within five days, he was walking.

The speed of Lincon’s recovery so far is a credit to the team and staff and, no doubt, a tremendous relief to his family, friends and community.

“Initially, they were calling it a quadriplegic-level spinal injury, so when he was being operated on, they were telling us that he may never move his arms and legs again and could be on breathing tubes for the rest of his life,” Nicole said.

“The number of people who have reached out to help has been overwhelming.”

Even from an outsider’s perspective, the support the family has received has been tremendous. A friend set up a GoFundMe page, and fund-raising events have been organised throughout the league community.

An upcoming event, with the date yet to be confirmed, will be hosted by the Binnaway Bombshells.

It will feature a barefoot bowls competition at the Binnaway Bowling Club, with a $40 entry fee for a team of four. A monster raffle will be drawn after the event, offering prizes such as meat trays, sporting memorabilia, and a barbecue.

Lincon and his family are over whelmed with gratitude for all the support they have received.

“If this had happened in Sydney, maybe the club would have reached out, but nothing like back home,” Nicole said.

The incident was reported to have occurred between 11.30am and 4.00pm on Saturday, 3 August. Police have commenced an investigation into the matter. Local veteran recognised for military service A Vietnam veteran from Coonabarabran has been recognised for his military service during a special presentation held recently.

Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton presented a Certificate of Appreciation t o Coonaba rabran’s Donald Andrew Harrod.

“Certif icates of Appreciation are just one way that the Australian Government expresses its gratitude to those who have given so much in protecting our country’s interests and helping to restore a nd m a i nt a i n p e a c e around the world,” Mr Coulton said. “ We a r e g r a t e f u l for the dedication and sacrifice demonstrated by our veterans’ service to Australia, and it’s important to recognise this. “ It ’s a n honou r to be able to present th is cer ti f icate to Donald, acknowledging his ser v ice in the Australian Army during the Vietnam War. “ D on a ld s er ve d a s a Corporal in the 5th Battalion of The Royal Australian R eg iment from February 1969 to March 1970. “ He was awarded a number of medals for his ser v ice including the Australian Active

Shire mayor, councillor Ambrose Doolan welcomed Cr Denis Todd to acknowledge Country before beg inning the ceremony w ith the assistance of Cr Z oe Holcombe.

Official legalities were spoken and oaths taken in front of a backdrop of the official crest and photo of the monarch.

Sugunakumar S elva raja h’s two children were clearly enthusiastic about the occasion, waving small Australian flags as they danced about the room.

The family hails from Sri Lanka and have only been living in Australia for a few years, moving to Coonabarabran post COVID.

T he fam i ly ’s th i rd and youngest child was born in Australia, while the older two children attend Saint Lawrence’s School, in Kindergarten and Year Two. Mr Selvarajah, wh o a l s o w o rk s f o r Warrumbungle Shire Council as a design and project engineer, was passionate about the

opportunities offered by becoming an Australian citizen. “ It is not about background – that’s why I decided to bring my kids here and become citizens. They can have good opportunities and contribute to the future,” he said.

Marlitt Herr considers herself an Aussie

“through and through” after moving to Australia when she was three with her family.

She grew up on the coast, and for the past 10 ye a r s h a s c a l le d Dunedoo home, leasing the local pub and owning the ‘White Rose Cafe’ in partnership with her husband.

“I don’t speak German

and having to deal with t he G er ma n c on su lt for anything is quite difficult,” she said.

For Ma rl itt, she plans to go to the pub to celebrate.

“I feel stupid for not doing it sooner obviously, because I’m an Aussie through and through, so it’ll be nice to now be able to vote.”

Town signage project moves ahead ‘Welcome’ signs are a postmark of any town, big or small, and now the signs of the Warrumbungle Shire Council are getting a facelift, with feedback from the community calling for stronger Aboriginal representation.

The Council project to update town signage across all the shire was put out for exhibition earlier this year with proposed designs posted online for community feedback.

Just under 70 submissions were made to Council, but despite the volume of feedback only a few submissions provided detailed and constructive critiques of the design, layout and infrastructure.

Out of the total submissions: • 47% expressed a negative outlook on presented designs; • 24% provided positive feedback; • 2 9 % wer e neut r a l , neit her endorsing nor opposing the designs.

Some submissions did not provide enough detail to be categorised clearly, either broadly supporting or opposing the design/s without specific reasoning.

These submissions also reflected common themes of areas of improvement.

A significant number of submissions called for greater Aboriginal inclusion in the signage designs, urging Council to adopt a more inclusive stance, with the original brass plaque being felt as insufficient for meaningful representation.

Others called for design changes such as altering the physical structure, modifying the materials used, or adding more wording.

At the ordinary Council meeting held in the Council Chambers in Coolah on Thursday, 18 July, the inclusion of the following amendments were resolved: • The back of the signs are to be used for town cultural stories; • The word ‘Binnaway’ be rotated and spelt downwards on the Binnaway signage; • The Coolah signage be supported by timber instead of sandstone; • The Dunedoo signage have the words ‘thank you for visiting the town where the people make the difference’ included on the back; • The Mendooran signage to include two ironbark posts either side of the town and add the word ‘River’ to the end of the wording ‘Oldest Town on the Castlereagh’.

This was moved by Cr Newton and seconded by Cr Brady.

It is hoped that the update of the signs prove to be a morale boost, and offer a stronger sense of community and connection to the land for travellers and locals alike.

Bend and snap: students shine in “Legally Blonde: The Musical” The Coonabarabran High School Hall was alive with excitement and energy as students took to the stage for their much-anticipated performance of “Legally Blonde: The Musical” over three nights from 1-3 August.

The young cast delivered a sparkling show that captivated audiences, showcasing the school’s impressive array of talent both on and off the stage.

D i re cte d by t h e ex p e r i e n ce d D r M i c h a e l Ar mstrong, who has over 3 0 yea rs in theatre directing classics like Les Miserables, Guys and Dolls and The Wizard of Oz, the production was a triumph of community theatre.

Dr Armstrong, who has revitalised the local theatre scene since his return to Coonabarabran, praised the dedication and hard work of the entire cast and crew.

“Their passion and commitment have brought this vibrant and energetic production to life,” Dr Armstrong said.

“Their combined efforts have created a show that both delights and inspires audiences of all ages.”

Nicole Lewis, a Sydney Conservatorium of Music alumna, made her debut as musical director with Legally Blonde: The Musical.

Her backg round includes per fo r mances at prestigious venues such as the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

Despite her experience, this was her first time solely directing a musical and she expressed her admiration for the students’ hard work.

“The cast and crew of the show should be very proud of how hard they’ve worked to prepare for the show,” Miss Lewis said.

“This musical performance truly showcased the incredible dedication and talent of the students of Coonabarabran High School.”

The lighting design by Tim Fay played a crucial role in setting the emotional tone of the production, while Ella Rankin, as the assistant director, and Sabina Gibson, the choreographer, contributed to the seamless and visually stunning performance.

The lead role of Elle Woods was por trayed

by Georgia Heaney, who captured the iconic character’s energy and charisma with flair. She managed multiple costume changes and minimal acrobatics (back-climbing) with flair.

Dapperly dressed Emmett, played by Toby Gledhill, delivered a strong, well-rounded performance, both vocally and in his acting.

Trudi Hoffman, following her role as Miss Honey in the school’s 2022 production of Matilda, was a standout as Paulette, her powerful voice and presence resonating with the audience.

Willem Ernest brought a commanding presence to the role of Callahan, rounding out a cast that was supported by a capable ensemble.

Behind-the-scenes, a dedicated backstage crew ensured that the show ran smoothly, with scene transitions executed seamlessly.

The bright pink set design, a nod to Elle Woods’ signature style, added a vibrant backdrop to the performance, enhancing the visual appeal of the show.

The musical was accompanied by a small but mighty eight-piece band, composed mostly of teachers and former teachers, whose experience and skill added depth to the musical numbers, bringing the score to life.

The success of Legally Blonde: The Musical is a testament to the hard work and collaboration of everyone involved.

Authors serve up wisdom at Feast of Words Food and fiction is a tale as old as time, but with Coonabarabran High School’s annual Feast of Words, they have given it a metaphorical twist, welcoming two new authors to serve up their literary wisdom.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY Melanie Saward and Graham Akhurst have both made their debut in the publishing industry w ith i n the past 12 months, but it’s decades of passion a nd l i fe experience they brought to the table for students at Coona High for the Feast of Words writers workshops.

T hey encouraged students t o “spea k thei r tr uth” using va r ious skills and techniques to inspire new ways of thinking and communicating.

Both guest lecturers praised the students’ engagement, and the wa rm welcome a nd hospitality they received from the community.

New techniques Ms Saward said her workshops considered all students, regardless of where they were at academically, equipping them with the skills to develop a story idea from their surroundings.

Similarly, Mr Akhurst focused on beginnings.

He d id th is th r ough reading and studying the first chapter of his novel , ‘ B orderla nds’, before answering questions about what information is delivered

in the first chapter of his novel, before ending with a ‘what if’ exercise to inspire the students’ to create their own stories.

Both authors acknowledged the importance of literary initiatives like Feast of Words.

M s S aw a r d , f r o m a small town herself, emphasised the value of introducing kids to different perspectives. “ T he a r ts a re so important to a vibrant community – having a writer write about their town is something to get behind.”

She recalled author visits during her childhood, describing them as “eye-opening” a nd ex per iences she wanted to pass on.

M r A khurst, a un iversity professor, highlighted that reading and w r iting skills w ill benef it child ren throughout their lives, regardless of their chosen discipline.

Indigenous voices Proudly of Aboriginal descent, both writers explore the theme of ‘speak your truth’ in their respective debut novels.

M r A khurst, a K okom i n i w r it er, explained that, “many

I nd i g e nou s w r it e r s / authors/communicators/ st or y t el ler s h ave a certain amount of truth in all work we do.”

He believes that in fiction you can get closer to writing the truth, and it was in these spaces he felt the mag ic of storytelling spring to life.

For Ms Saward, she strongly believes that in this day and age we are not properly listening t o or va lu i ng you ng people’s words, thoughts or feelings, particularly t ho s e o f A b o r i g i n a l youth.

Her work has pulled from her own experiences g row ing up as an Biga mu l a nd Wa k ka Ha k ka descenda nt , exper iences she sa id were so often shared by others.

“Often times, I nd igenou s k id s a r e villainised for being out on the street, or walking home, and what I like to do is teach kids that their voices are important,” she said.

Her debut novel, ‘Burn’, drew from her own teenage diaries, teaching that all truths and stories matter. “ You’re never going to be as emotional or connected to yourself

as when you’re a kid, so I teach people that all their truths and stories are important, whether you’re a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ kid, or what people think is a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ kid.”

Reading habits To encourage children to read, Ms Saward sais to “meet people where t he y ’r e at .” I f y ou r child enjoys ‘ Marvel’, start with comics, and g r adu a l ly i nt r o duc e graphic novels and other genres, she suggested.

Mr Akhurst felt that it was a resolution that came w ith positive examples. “ You cannot expect you r c h i ld r en t o b e interested in reading, just because you say they

should be,” he said. “ It’s an Indigenous aspiration that you need to ‘see it to believe it’, but across the board, we develop the habits that our parents impart on us.”

He recommended parents looking through lists for age-appropriate books and perhaps reading some of these books with their children, or finding books to be reading for themselves.

Diversity?

A s only the second A b or i g i n a l r om a n c e writer in the country, Ms Saward said if you look at reading lists you will recognise that every romance features a white couple, but asks, “What

would it hurt to pick up a book with a black protagonist?”

However, Mr Akhurst said he has observed a shift in trends in the publishing industry, with Indigenous Australians gaining a stronger presence in the space.

H i s n o v e l , ‘Borderlands’, has been descr ibed as an “eco thriller horror”, which he’s happy about because it speaks to so many different genres.

As a horror novel, he believes that so long as it hits certain ‘beats’ a s s o c i at e d w it h t he genre, then there is room to create diversity.

Regarding Australia’s l itera r y voices, M s

Saward noted that, on the surface, diversity seemed to have improved.

However, she said an independent bookseller at a con ference once revealed that ther were no books coming out in Australia by authors of colour at the end of the year.

“It’s going to be a white Christmas – in the worst sense,” she joked.

Despite th is, she remains optimistic about the progress towards diversity in the literary field.

Both authors enjoyed their stay in C o o n a b a r a br a n a nd expressed enthusiasm about returning if the opportunity arises.

Why does Australia WORD for WORD need Rex?

Regional Express (Rex) Airlines has grounded its jet flights between Australia’s major cities after entering voluntary administration.

Rex has run with the tagline ‘our heart is in the country’ ever since its establishment after the collapse of Ansett Airways in 2002. This is because it is often the only airline flying in and out of remote locations.

Though these routes only account for about five per cent of domestic passengers, the flights provide essential connections between the regions and the cities.

Dr Ian Douglas, from University of NSW Sydney’s School of Aviation, said while Rex’s intercity flights are grounded, the remote routes are still flying – which is important for the health care of many Australians.

“If Rex completely fails, then one of the consequences is that it puts remote medical care at risk,” Dr Douglas says.

He says cutting flights to Australia’s smaller regional centres isolates communities.

“Rex has an important role in keeping the country more connected, which helps us all thrive economically and socially.

“If Rex’s regional business doesn’t survive, there won’t just be a knock-on effect with

higher ticket prices for consumers.”

Regional airlines are a lifeline connecting rural and regional locations, replacing journeys that would otherwise take hours – or days – by car or train.

“There are many areas where Rex is the only airline operator. Without them, access is cut to health and education services, as well as tourism and industry.”

What went wrong?

Rex was reported to be losing $1 million per week with its Boeing 737 jet business flying capital city to capital city.

The airline launched return services from Sydney to Melbourne in March 2021 and its network expanded steadily since. A new route between Melbourne and Perth was launched as recently as last month.

In the past week, nearly 20 per cent of Rex employees lost their jobs because of the cuts to these services between major cities.

“While Rex expanded their services beyond regional routes, the expanded network didn’t provide enough scale or frequency to be commercially viable,” Dr Douglas said.

“They were flying some major routes seven or eight times a day. But the two major carriers, Qantas and Virgin, were running up to four flights an hour at peak time.”

The news of Rex entering voluntary administration follows the collapse of budget carrier, Bonza in April.

And before that, domestic failures include Impulse, Tiger Air, Air Australia, Ozjet, two iterations of Compass – and the much larger Ansett Airways.

“The domestic market is hard to crack,” Dr Douglas said.

Dr Douglas said there were early warning signs about the company struggling back in June, when the former executive chair Lim Kim Hai stepped down.

Lim is a major shareholder of Rex. Since stepping down, he launched a process to remove several directors, including former transport minister John Sharp, from the board.

What next?

When Virgin Australia went into administration during the COVID-19 pandemic, the company survived by streamlining its core services and trimming its fleet to a single aircraft type.

Virgin reinstated its domestic operation with more than 30 aircraft.

Rex only had nine 737 jets operating its flights between major cities.

There is speculation that overseas private equity firm PAG could become the new owner.

The firm had previously funded the expansion of Rex to cover its routes between capital cities.

While the Federal Government said it wants to make sure there is a stronger aviation sector by ensuring Rex continues to operate its regional routes, it has yet to commit to funding it.

But the Government will soon release its Aviation White Paper, setting long-term policies for the industry.

Dr Douglas said the likelihood of Rex completely folding is low and he expects the airline will continue to operate its regional services.

“Several state governments as well as the Federal Government have indicated that it can’t be allowed it to fail,” he said.

“They want and need to save the connectivity to the regions.

“Nobody is saying we should just let Rex die.”

Where would people recognise your face from? They can recognise my face from bistro kitchen because I work there with good people.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be in the army w h e n I wa s a ro u n d e i g ht, b u t changed into going to Japan for fo re i g n e m p l oy m ent, b ut af te r completing my Year 12 graduation, then decided to come to Australia to pursue my education journey.

What ’s the most interesting job you’ve ever had? I find my chef job interesting because when I was kitchen helper first time, all chefs from my previous workplaces worked under pressure and in a hectic service time as a team.

You’ve had a stressful day – what’s your way of winding down? I take a deep breath, i.e. inhale and exhale until my thinking gets clear. I will go for short walk if necessary and if it’s cold outside I will go to sleep.

How would your family and friends d e s c r i b e yo u i n t h r e e w o r d s?

Clumsy. Confused. Hopeful.

What are your favourite places to visit on a road trip? I currently have ‘L’ licence, so I won’t be able to do a road trip unfortunately.

If you could have any super power what would it be? Teleportation, because I can go any where in second and visit any place and meet any people I want in the world.

I f yo u h a d a n a n i m a l o r p l a n t ren a m ed i n you r h o n ou r, w h a t wo u l d yo u wa n t t o ca r r y yo u r name? ‘Jackey’ for dog, because I used to have my fellow pet when I was kid, and for a plant maybe ‘Life’.

What’s one totally irrational fear that you have? I fear I might run out of instant ramen noodle in my storage because it is quick to make and eat whenever I want. I have one packet of instant noodle in my storage currently as back up and always.

Do you have a favourite community event or group? Currently, no.

Best thing about living in Coonaba rab ran? Beautiful sk y at night to star gaze. The view is astonishing.

Have you read any good books or watched any good movies lately?

I a m n ot i nto b o o k s . T h e m o s t fantastic movie I watched is Corpse Bride, 20 05, lately. Though I was not used to this style of animation at first, later while watching the movie I was used to the animation preference on film and the story was fantastic. The Emperor’s New Groove, 20 0 0, is also one of the best films I used to watch when I was young, as it is funny to watch.

What are the top three items on your bucket list? Money. House.

Travel.

Do you have a hidden talent? Or what is something people might not know about you? I am still searching. I am boring person.

If you could pick a decade to visit in a time machine, what would it be? It will be 2040 to 2050.

If you could have anyone around for dinner who would it be and what would you cook? I would cook for my late grandmother. I would cook a simple but delicious dish, i.e. cooked rice and lentil soup with fried egg on side.

When was the last time you had a really good laugh? I look at memes and funny videos always, ever y day, in my free time, and laugh.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? The only person that can change you is you.

WEATHER WATCH Unseasonable August rain arrived just before last weekend in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Karratha had the heaviest fall of 47.4mms in two days, the wettest for August in 55 years of records.

The previous wettest for August there was 34.4mms in 1974.

Interestingly, widespread heavy rain

fell during the fourth week of August 1974 in our region when I was travelling home after six weeks staying at Daly Waters and observed Lake Eyre at full capacity.

Port Hedland recorded 28.2mms to Saturday morning, 3 August, the wettest August day there since 34.6mms fell in 1988.

of 92mms fell at Port Hedland in 1919.

Both 1919 and 1988 were notably warmer than average from September to December in our region, but 1988 was much wetter than 1919.

On 20 July, Daly Waters had an unseasonable frost with the temperature falling to 0.8 degrees, the coldest for July since minus 1.0 degrees on 24 July 1888.

T h e r e w a s unprecedented widespread, very-hot weather from October 1888 right through to April 1889 in our region.

At Coonabarabran, the mean maximum of 14.3 for July was the coldest

for July since 2007, and the mean minimum of 2.4 degrees was the warmest in July since 1998.

Perth has enjoyed above-average rainfall of 170.6mms during July for the first time in any month since May 2023.

It was the warmest July since 2007, after which we enjoyed warmer-than-normal conditions from late August 2007 to early November 2007 – then very wet right up to the end of December.

The summer of 200708 was very hot, with a high frequency of thunderstorms, and this heat continued to the third week of March 2008.

OBITUARIES Basil KING: 1935 - 2024

Isaac “Ike” BATES: 17.2.1927 - 28.6.2024 The last sur viving member of the original Redfern All Blacks rugbyleague team and former president of the Rosehill Bowling Club, Isaac (Ike) Bates has passed away at the age of 97.

Isaac g rew up in Coo naba rab ra n. H e worked as a shearer, and also had a go at ‘burrcutting’, among other things, befo re going to Sydney to work. In Sydney he drove a meatwagon, delivering meat carcasses to butcher shops throughout the met ropol itan a rea.

He was an original team member of the Redfern All Blacks rugby league team, which he joined in 1945 at the age of 17 and played with the club for 11 years. He played full-back or on the wing and was the team’s goal kicker. Ike became a Life Member and wa s i nvited to attend the Redfern All Blacks Presentation Day where ‘Uncle Ike’ was warmly welcomed by the locals and current

players.

However, his passion later in life was lawn bowls and in 1988 he joi ned the Rosehi l l Bowling Club. He later became president of that club and served as president for 20 years.

The Febr uar y 20 0 8 ed ition of the Bow l s NSW Magazine, stated that the club went from strength to strength under Isaacs’s leadership. It also stated that, ‘He is believed to have been the first

Abo r ig inal man to have been elected as president of a bowling club in the metropolitan area’.

Isaac was regularly

invited back to his home town of Coonabarabran to play in their Presidents Day competition, where he enjoyed playing bowls with the presidents from other bowling clubs, along with the local bowlers.

Isaac was taken back to his home town of Coonabarabran where a service was held at St Lawrence’s Catholic Church on 19 July 2024.

He was then l a id to rest at Burra Bee Dee Cemetery.

The Safe and Secure Wa t e r P r o g r a m i s suppor ti ng over $1 billion worth of projects across the state, with more than 260 in various stages of delivery.

Construction will soon get underway to upgrade the Dunedoo S ewage T reatment Plant, delivering modern new in frastr ucture that w ill ser v ice the community for years to come, while providing greater protections for the environment.

T he $3.4 million project, funded by the NSW Government and Warrumbungle Shire Council, will see work being rolled out in stages over t he ne x t t h r e e years.

The first cab off the rank is an upgrade to t he agei ng f ac i l it y ’s maturation pond, wh ich is responsible for disinfecting effluent from the main treatment unit before discharging it back sa fely t o the environment.

It will ensure wastewater is treated to a much higher standard, s o it me e t s m o d e r n environmental safety guidelines.

T he project also includes upg rades to treatment and sludge

management systems, a new aeration un it, improvements to automation to make the plant easier to monitor and control remotely, new amen ities and electrical work, along w ith a bett er ac cess road.

T he c u r r ent pl a nt was built in 1970 and has passed its design life and is struggling to meet Environmental Protection Agency guidelines, with several breaches being recorded over the past nine years.

This is why addressing these wastewater risks has been a major priority for the NSW Government and Council.

Work will commence next month, with the full upgrade expected to be complete by the end of 2026.

It is with great sadness that former Coonabarabran resident Basil King passed away on 21 July 2024 in Camden NSW. Basil had been in ill health for several years and was in a nursing home facility when he passed away.

Basil had lived in Coonabarabran in the late 1950s to early 60s, working at the Coonabarabran Times and also as a volunteer fireman.

Basil and family later moved to Campbelltown where he continued to work in the printing industry – at Dalley Typesetting Service in the CBD, and then William Brooks in Zetland. He also maintained his links with the local fire brigade and eventually was made captain.

Basil became a union organiser with the Printing and Kindred Industry Union (PKIU), rising to the position of secretary. He was a tireless worker and negotiator for improvement for Union members and, along with shop delegates and workers, he achieved a great deal for workers in better wages and conditions such as shorter working week, improved conditions and superannuation for workers at William Brooks, well before it was bought in by the Hawke Labor Government.

Basil was also president of the Graphic Arts Club, a registered club originally founded for members involved in the printing industry and, following an amalgamation with the South Sydney Businessmen’s Club,

he was president from 2000 to 2016, when his health issues began.

Basil enjoyed his trips back to Coonabarabran for the Gold Cup horse race meeting, along with the obligatory visits to vineyards in Mudgee and other areas whenever time allowed. Several other ‘vineyard working trips’ and countr y race meetings were also on the agenda over the years, where the choice of drink was ways a red, after several samplings.

Basil passed away at 88 years of age. He was born in 1935 in Goulburn and was predeceased by his first wife Carole and his daughter Kathryn, and is survived by his second wife Evelyn, son Michael and his family, and two step-brothers.

Af fectionately called ‘Baz za’ or ‘The King’, Basil was a tireless worker for his union members and the Graphic Arts Club, but a more fitting moniker was given to him due to his political bent – that being the ‘Working Class Warrior’ by thankful workers whom he had helped over his lifetime.

A funeral ser vice for Basil was held on Thursday, 31 July, with a memorial day in his honour hosted at the Graphic Arts Club in Mascot on Monday, 5 August.

No doubt ‘The Internationale’ was sung and many a red wine or two was raised in toast and in memory of Basil.

Food, blokes, yarns: a winning mental-health recipe In a small, but significant step towards addressing mental health in regional NSW, the Coonabarabran Rotary Club has been contributing to a regular event known as ‘Barbie with the Blokes’.

Launched as part of Rotary ’s Presidential Program, this initiative has received overwhelming support from community and commercial organisations alike.

T he pr o g r a m a l s o aligned with the theme for Rotary International, ‘ C r e at e Hop e i n t he World’, and has proven to be a success in the C oonaba rabran community.

Initially funded by the Coonabarabran Rotary Club, the initiative was later suppor ted by a district grant covering 80 per cent of the costs.

R otary prov ided advertising, food, and on g oi n g s upp or t for Bruno Efoti, who was a mentor for the Barbie with the Blokes program at previous sessions.

Mr Efoti is a dedicated mental-health advocate and the Coonabarabran initiative was an addon to his mental-health program in Dubbo called Tradies in Sight.

His approach combined sharing food w ith open , he a r t felt conversations and was said to create an atmosphere of warmth and acceptance.

T he events were accessible to all men, with an average of 30 attendees per meeting, adding to a total of 240 participants over the course of the program’s course, with 75 returnees.

The final meeting for the financial year was held on 21 June, where the blokes celebrated M r E fot i ’s e f for t s and included a guest s p e a ker f r om E ver y Daughter Matters, Ross Nancarrow.

Rotary member a nd orga n iser of the Barbie with the Blokes program, Russ James said Mr Efoti grew up in a village in Tonga where communication varied differently from rural Australia.

“Bruno took us back to a bunch of va lues we all know about, but may have largely lost in our communities and families. Dads sharing meals with kids, being present etc,” Mr James said.

“ L i fe ’s t o u g h f o r everyone. Meeting Bruno and starting this initiative has shown me the power of community support in overcoming these challenges.

“It will not be the last event. There is a need in rural communities and my commitment is to continue raising funds.

We have seen first hand the positive changes and will ensure it continues.”

With enough momentum, the program has the potential to be rolled out within other rural towns.

For now, Mr Ja m e s i s s upp o r t e d by o r g a n i s at i o n s i n Coonabarabran such as the Men’s Shed, which has offered its building as the permanent home for future meetings.

Throughout the pr og ra m , at t endees have built the courage to openly share their journey of mental health, create moments of laughter and share a casual yarn.

Mr James has had his own journey of mental hea lth a nd became aware of the need for care at a young age.

H i s mot her wa s a mental-health nurse and

he was exposed to the reality of mental health th rough i nteractions with various patients.

H e h a s a persona l passion for understanding people and how they can grow and said he was grateful for the opportunity to organise this program for men.

T he Barbie w ith the Blokes in itiative identifies how grassroots c om mu n it y ef for t s , backed by committed individuals and organisations, can make a meaningful difference.

By fostering an environment of trust, openness, and support, the R ota r y Club of

C oonaba rabra n not only addresses mentalhealth issues, but also builds a stronger, more connected community.

Next session This Friday, 9 August, Coonabarabran Rotary will host its next Barbie with the Blokes session led by rotarian, Russ James.

Taking the form of a curry night, the event will be held at the C oonaba rabra n M e n ’s S h e d , E s s e x Street Coonabarabran, commencing at 6pm.

T he even ing w i l l centre around a casual but informative discussion around men’s health.

AROUND THE SCHOOLS Tooraweenah Public Transition to Kindergarten We welcomed some very excited students to T ransition last M o nd ay ! T r a n s it i o n students joined the K/1 classroom to experience ‘big school’ before they start Kindergarten in 2025.

The day was filled with singing, pre-writing and pre-reading activities and hands-on activities includ ing playdough, pattern blocks, puzzles and crafts.

Coonabarabran Public Despite the arctic conditions sweeping the town last week, we had many exciting events happening at CPS. The week kicked off with a visit from World of Maths. Each stage was treated to many and varied exciting mathematical challenges.

As groups rotated around the activities there were smiles of satisfaction and sighs of frustration as everyone wracked their brains finding answers.

The shouts of success rang out throughout the hall when a solution was found. Hands-on a c t i vi t ies rei nforced maths concepts while encouraging participation, boosting confidence, and sparking a love of learning and team building.

Then, the school stood still, just as the world has, for our own Olympics Day. Each child was made part of a team representing competing countries, and motivated and passionate staff coordinated and provided a cultural experience for each before we marched across the oval to participate in many and varied sports.

After the whole school cheering arrival into the stadium, with flags flying high, we did our best in a variety of entertaining and hilariously funny Olympic sports – tag wrestling with Mr Lowe, skateboarding with Mrs Meyers, and scissor, paper rock hockey with Mrs Jenner just a few.

Competitors reported their scores at the end of each rotation, and it was New Zealand who took home the gold medal, followed by Canada and China. Staff and students were thrilled with the success of the

donated some money to go towards children and families affected by a genetic condition.

This term, students are excited and lucky to have Rodney back to

We welcome our new preschool friend, Parker, and his family into our preschool community.

We have a busy first few weeks at preschool, with our Gulargambone Preschool friends coming over in week three on Wednesday, 7 August, to enjoy a day at Toora Preschool and experience Bush Preschool with us.

This had to be postponed at the end of term two due t o t he d r e ad f u l winter weather.

We can’t wait to tell our families the story ‘ Br ow n B ea r, Br ow n Bear, What Do You See?’ at ou r Gra ndpa rents and Friends Day with To or awe en a h P ubl ic School as part of our Education Week c e l e b r a t i o n s t o d a y, Thursday, 8 August.

T h i s i s one of ou r favourite stories, with preschool friends also deciding to sing some favourite songs as well.

It will be quite a show, e s p e c i a l l y w it h o u r fabulous concert props!

We have been including both K ey Word Sig n Language and Wiradjuri language in our songs, dances and poems, with ch i ld r en show i ng us their amazing memory s k i l l s when n a m i n g the various Australian animals in our songs and finger plays.

Friends were super excited t o d iscover that our new plants in the garden have been f lou r i s h i n g a nd a r e f lowering beautifully.

They look amazing, as does our new black fence around preschool and school.

We continue to enjoy reading with big school friends each Thursday,

as well as Bush Preschool each week on alternate Wednesdays and Fridays, with the assistance of a parent/ family helper joining us for this ‘outside the gate’ adventure.

T he ch i ld r en h ave taken a great deal of attention to the various things in nature, pa r ticu la rly how the creek seems to constantly change, the baby birds in the trees, and how many yabby claws they find among the rocks.

We all have so much fun – both at our Bush Preschool sessions and at Tooraweenah Preschool each week!

Full time in round 14 of the 2024 Castlereagh League signalled that the finals series was set to begin this coming weekend, with the qualifying final and the elimination finals to be played on Saturday and Sunday respectively in all four grades.

In terms of wins this s e a s on aga i n st e ach other, it stands at one all, with the Roosters scoring a resounding 58 to 14 victory at Cobar in the opening round while the Jets returned serve when they won 28 to 18 in their round 10 game at Narromine.

Although it will not be the end of the road for the loser, for the vanquished it would be the end of any chance to host the 2024 grand final, so a fierce-fought contest is expected in front of what should be a good crowd.

Moving on to Sunday’s first-grade clash, the Gulgong Terriers and the Coonaba rabran Un i c o r n s h av e o n l y met once so fa r th is season, that being in Coonabarabran in round seven, with the match being a 32-all draw.

Good turnout for monthly medal WEEKEND GOLF The Burmac Insurance Monthly Medal played at the Coonabarabran Golf Club on Saturday, 3 August, was a huge success, attracting a field of 25 players.

Thanks so much to Chris Mack for organising the prizes.

The weather was terrific for August.

We had Jane from Woy Woy come and join us on the day also, while visiting Coona.

The winners were: A-Grade – D Moore with net 72, which is pretty good when you are playing off 10.

The runner-up was S Capewell with 74.

B-Grade – the winner was K Vallette with 75, and runner-up was G Gasior 76, on a count back from a few people.

Ladies – Lou Dowsett won with a great score of 69, while the runner-up, with 70, went to Elaine Gardiner.

The Shoot Out went to Chris Mack! We are not sure if he threw it there!

On rink four, Tony Antaw and Mark Watton were up against Vince Collins and Glenn Bowmaker in a game of pairs, with Tony’s side

T he Sa l ly K n ight Memorial Stableford was won by Elaine Gardiner, scoring 34 points from a good field of competitors.

Coming in second place was K at Ch r ist of f, recording 31 points.

This year was the first year of competition for these girls and, along with the other three new girls, they are showing a natural ability for this game.

T hey have also ventured onto other golf courses, playing very well at the Binnaway and Coolah tournaments.

We are so pleased that you have taken up this sport and are hopeful of more new players joining us in the near future.

Star-struck! Coona Galaxy shines at carnival Coonabarabran Galaxy Football Club proudly represented their town at the 2024 Graeme Sunderland Memorial Carnival, held in Narrabri on Sunday, 4 August.

The event, which brought together teams from across the region including Moree, G u n n e d a h , I nve r e l l a n d Wee Waa, has been a longstand i ng t rad ition fo r the local soccer club, which has attended the car nival for more than 40 years.

Club president, Peta Imrie reflected on the event, noting the competitive spirit and cama rade r ie that al ways marks the occasion.

“Narrabri is a large club with many skilled coaches,” Peta said.

“We love going over there, giving their teams some tough competition – and sometimes even taking home medals for our smaller community and town.

“The kids love the excitement of the carnivals and they real ly enjoy the friendly competition.”

While no trophies made their way back to Coonabarabran, the effort and determination of the player s did not go unnoticed.

The under 9’s and under 13’s teams had great success on

the field, claiming some wins against the larger clubs.

“No gold medals this year, but an A+ for effort,” Peta said. “ O u r u n d e r 12 ’s t e a m hadn’t ever played together previously, but they made each opposition work hard for a victory or draw.

“Well done to all the players for their tremendous efforts.”

In total, the Galaxy Club fielded seven teams, with 53 kids participating on the day, showcasing the depth of talent and enthusiasm within the community.

The club is already looking forward to its next challenge at the upcoming carnival in Gunnedah on Sunday, 18 August.

Peta also took a moment to express gratitude to the volunteer coaches who make these events possible.

“The club is very thankful to the volunteer coaches who give up their time on the weekends to teach the kids and take these teams to carnivals. Without them, we couldn’t do it!”

Mr Chaffey was chosen from two other candidates – Michael Cooper and Peter Strahorn, both of Dubbo – at the party’s preselection meeting held at The Crossing Theatre, Narrabri, on Saturday.

The preselection process follows the retirement announcement of current member Mark Coulton who said in March he will not contest the next federal election.

Mr Chaffey is a local Gunnedah businessman, a boilermaker by trade, and has previously served as president of the Gunnedah Chamber of Commerce.

He has been the mayor of Gunnedah since 2016 and has also served as chair of the Country Mayors Association of NSW since 2022, chair of the Namoi Unlimited Joint Organisation of Councils in 2018, and is on the board of the AUKUS forum of Nuclear Advisory Board.

Mr Chaffey said he was honoured to be chosen as The Nationals’ candidate and looks forward to getting to know communities throughout the Parkes electorate over the coming months.

Two drivers have died and the Newell Highway was closed after two trucks collided 35km north of Moree.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 10pm on Monday, July 29 and found two B-doubles had collided.

Both male drivers, aged 25 and 63, died at the scene.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

NSW Ambulance tasked the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to an accident at a property in the Moree Plains region on July 31.

The patient was treated at the scene by the helicopter critical care team and airlifted to the John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle.

Successful public donation applicants At the ordinary council meeting of Moree Plains Shire Council held on July 18, councillors considered the applications for financial assistance made by community groups for the April to June financial quarter.

Interim general manager appointed for Narrabri Shire Council Narrabri Shire Council’s director of infrastructure delivery, Eloise Chaplain has been appointed as the interim general manager of council.

The interim appointment, which follows the resignation of Rob Williams, was announced following an extraordinary meeting of council in July.

The matter was discussed by shire councillors in a closed session of council.

Councillors voted unanimously on the appointment, council announced following the meeting.

In a statement, council said Mrs Chaplain brings a wealth of expertise to the role with tertiary qualifications in both engineering and finance.

“In their unanimous decision, councillors emphasised the importance of maintaining the cultural and performance momentum achieved over the past two years – with the decision to appoint an internal candidate reflecting the considerable progress made by the senior management team, who have worked diligently to realise these improvements,” the statement read.

The interim role will start on August 16 and continue until no later than August 15, 2025.

New Newell Highway heavy duty rest area takes shape Foundation and pavement work have started on the Newell Highway’s newest heavy vehicle rest area, which will also be the largest of its kind in north-western NSW. This project will be delivered as part of the $261 million Newell Highway Heavy Duty Pavement Upgrades project which is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments.

The Australian government is contributing $205.7 million, with the remaining $55 million being funded by the NSW government.

This project is part of the Australian government’s $1.5 billion total investment in the Newell Highway.

The new rest area will feature 18 heavy vehicle parking spaces up to 48.5 metres long providing for short and long-term parking,10 light vehicle and caravan parking spaces for short-term parking, toilet facilities, including disabled access, picnic shelter and solar lighting, rubbish bins, and tree planting and landscaping.

Located about 12 kilometres north of Narrabri, the new rest area is a key part of the Newell Highway Heavy Duty Pavement Upgrade project that is currently being delivered and involves major upgrades to 20 kilometres of road between Narrabri and Moree.

The rest area is expected to be completed by early 2026.

Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said a well-functioning

freight network is vital for economic prosperity, ensuring industries can thrive, supply chains remain resilient, and communities are connected.

“The Australian government is committed to ensuring the wellbeing of the freight sector and the people who work in it. Part of this is ensuring that drivers have safe and appropriate rest areas,” Ms King said.

NSW Regional Transport and Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison expressed her gratitude to the freight industry for their comprehensive feedback, which is enabling the NSW government to deliver more facilities that will “truly support wellbeing and fatigue management of heavy vehicle drivers throughout NSW”.

“On a visit to this site … I was impressed with the scope of the works in tailoring around the needs of heavy vehicle drivers, as well as catering for light vehicles and other road users to manage fatigue on the Newell. It was also pleasing to see how the layout of this rest area will deliver a much safer alignment for the road,” Ms Aitchison said.

“Driver fatigue contributed to at least 20 per cent of heavy vehicle fatal crashes in regional NSW in the five years to December 2023.

For the Newell Highway, fatigue is the highest contributing factor accounting for nearly 44 per cent of all heavy vehicle fatal crashes.

“For too long there has been a shortage of rest areas in north-western NSW and I’m

pleased the Albanese and Minns Labor governments are investing in new state-of-the-art facilities, which will reduce driver fatigue, improve road safety, and make journeys more comfortable for all drivers.”

Senator for NSW Deborah O’Neill and state Labor Duty MLC for Barwon Stephen Lawrence MLC have also welcomed progress on the development.

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler said the Newell Highway plays a vital role for freight movements, connecting communities and supporting tourism in

the region.

“Currently, outside of Narrabri, motorists and heavy vehicle drivers face lengthy detours for rest areas with toilets – either having to travel 31 kilometres south to the Bohena rest area or 52 kilometres north to the Tookey Creek rest area,” Mr Butler said.

“Once completed, this rest area will provide drivers with more options, which will enhance safety, reduce maintenance costs.”

The Newell Highway Heavy Duty Pavement Upgrade, started by the previous Coalition governments, was previously described as the

freight corridor’s largest ever upgrade.

“This section of the Newell Highway is located within one of the most productive agricultural regions in Australia, so it’s critical that this road is up to scratch to ensure our farmers can more efficiently get their product to market while improving safety and efficiency for all road users,” Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton said when the project’s contract was awarded in 2022.

Mr Coulton welcomed news that work had started on the heavy vehicle rest area.

Farmers debate renewables, traceability reforms at NSW Farmers conference Renewable energy, national traceability reforms and feral pigs were front and centre for farmers debating the key issues affecting agriculture at the NSW Farmers 2024 Annual Conference in July.

NSW Farmers president Xavier Martin said conference delegates were clear that as the nation’s energy transition progressed, the need to find practical solutions to reduce the impact on farmers was a critical concern.

“Recognising the complex impact this transition is having on landholders and rural communities – and properly engaging these groups on the renewable projects that affect them – is just the start of what governments need to do,” Mr Martin said.

“Mandating fire plans for renewables projects and keeping huge vehicles transporting infrastructure off rural roads during peak traffic hours were just some of the solutions supported today to ease the pain of this energy transition on farmers and families.

“There is much to be done if we want to minimise the impact on rural NSW – but today has seen real solutions and a real pathway through this transition put on the table.”

National traceability reforms were also on the agenda, with farmers warning their support for the reforms remained contingent on several key principles being met.

“Delegates were very clear today that

governments needed to step up – and big time – to ensure farmers could successfully transition through these traceability reforms, without huge costs or regulatory burdens being placed on them,” Mr Martin said.

“Insufficient funding to support producers through these reforms, as well as the lack of tag-free pathways for animals moving directly from their property of birth to slaughter, were among the issues farmers must have addressed and fast to transition to this new system by 2025.”

While delegates voted against a motion to establish a feral pig bounty, farmers supported a call for coordinated measures to fight feral pigs at the conference.

Other motions passed at the conference included motions in support of: • Implementing the recommendations of the Dyer review into community engagement on renewable energy projects.

• Situating nuclear plants at existing coalfired power sites.

• Establishing an online mapping portal to guide land use on rural land.

• Subsiding varroa mite treatment costs for NSW beekeepers.

NSW Farmers president Xavier Martin, of Mullaley, and vice president Rebecca Reardon, of Moree, were also re-elected to their positions, unopposed, for a second term at the conference. In addition, Ian McColl, Justin Everitt and Bronwyn Petrie were elected to the NSW Farmers board.

‘Get onya bikes’ for Croppa for the Chopper

Organisers of fundraising initiative Croppa for the Chopper are calling for participants to “get onya bikes” on Sunday and help raise much-needed funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

Croppa Creek Store owner Carolyn Bellman brainstormed the idea after taking part in a similar event at Moree a few years ago.

“I participated in an event organised by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Moree Support Group,” Mrs Bellman said.

“We rode from the Newell Highway, along the River Road, and had lunch at the wonderful Pally Pub. It was a fantastic day. My daughter, who was seven at the time, rode as well.

“I thought, ‘I could organise this kind of event at Croppa Creek’,” she smiled.

The event is supported by Croppa Creek Rural Fire Service, Gwydir Shire Council and Westpac Rescue Helicopter Moree Support Group.

“We don’t know when we need these services – we just know we do need them, and we ought to support them any way we can,” Mrs Bellman said.

A raffle boosted by local companies and individuals will be drawn afterwards.

“We want to support the community and be part of Croppa for the Chopper, and we hope everybody, in turn, supports the community and buys a ticket in the raffle.”

Mrs Bellman is overwhelmed by support for the fundraiser.

“The generosity from our community has been amazing. It just goes to show how valued this service is in country communities,” she said.

Croppa for the Chopper will set off from North Star at 10am, Sunday, with riders cycling 28 kilometres south to Croppa Creek.

New solar farm project proposed near Quirindi A new solar farm has been proposed for the outskirts of Quirindi by the same company building similar projects near Gunnedah and Boggabri.

The proposed solar farm at Quirindi would be located north east of the township at the corner of Porters Lane and Borah Creek Road. It would have capacity to power 2150 homes.

The farm would cover about 11.09 hectares of agricultural land and feature 10,750 solar modules ranging in height from 1.5 metres to 2.75 metres installed in 128 rows running east to west. There is approximately 6m spacing between each row.

The Quirindi 1B Solar Farm project, if approved by the Northern Regional Planning Panel, has an estimated capital investment value of $8.67 million. The applicant, ITP Development Pty Ltd, is Australian-owned company primarily focused on the development of “town-scale” solar farms, typically in the 5MW to 20MW range.

ITP Development has proposed similar small-scale projects in Gunnedah, Boggabri, Narrabri, Kootingal, and Armidale.

The design allows for the Quirindi solar farm to coexist with existing rural activities such as animal grazing and cropping, ensuring minimal disruption to current land use. Each row of photovoltaic (PV) modules will track the sun across the sky from east to west daily, maximising energy production. Components of the facility include two 3.4MW

inverter stations that are 3 metres high and each mounted on a 12.2-metre-long skid; a 2.9-metre-high kiosk to convert high and medium voltage to low voltage electricity suitable for connection to the local system and a battery storage system that is 12.2 metres long, 2.4 metres wide and 2.9 metres high located alongside the inverter stations.

The electricity generated will be directed to Quirindi through existing electrical infrastructure, significantly contributing to the local power supply for households and businesses.

The development is expected to create about 50 jobs during the construction phase, offering potential employment opportunities to local residents and creating a new market for local contractors.

The solar farm’s lifespan is projected to be 35 years, with the developer adopting a flexible approach to accommodate potential changes in market conditions and technological advancements over the next decade.

ITP is also developing the Gunnedah 2A Solar Farm, located on Wandobah Road - a 5MW, 12ha solar facility located within a 49.6ha site. According to the company’s website, the Gunnedah and neighbouring Boggabri and Narrabri solar farms - which also feature 5MW capacity each - are currently under development.

Another 154MW solar project also exists on Orange Grove Road near Gunnedah and is operated

by Canadian Solar.

Run the Plains scheduled to spring from starting block in September

A new running and fitness event has been announced for Moree, and organisers believe the concept has the legs to be huge.

Run the Plains, a partnership between Moree Little Athletics Club, Moree Water Park, Tourism Moree, 2400 Run Club and Moree Parkrun, is scheduled to spring from the starting blocks in September.

The two-day event will be held Friday evening, September 27, and Saturday, September 28.

The September 27 launch features the Kamilaroi K, a one-kilometre sprint in Moree’s CBD. The next day, four races over longer distances will be held at Moree Water Park.

Little Athletics Club president Kelly James expects Run the Plains to draw participants and visitors from across the region.

“This will be an exhilarating and inclusive event, bringing together the community with an aim to promote fun, fitness, and camaraderie,” Mrs James said.

“Run the Plains will be for participants of all ages and abilities, and offer a range of races over distances designed to suit everyone, whether they be seasoned athletes or casual runners.”

The event has been funded

by Moree Plains Shire Council's Event Partnership Fund Program,

established earlier this year.

An application was lodged by Julie Rushby on behalf of Tourism Moree and Moree Little Athletics Club.

“I had a quick chat with Kelly (James) and lodged an application with the view we create an annual event that gets our community moving, but also attracts people to the region,” Ms Rushby said.

“Hopefully we can expand this event so it becomes a guaranteed two-night stay for any visitors that come and participate.”

Local sporting and running organisations were quick to come on board when told about the concept.

Moree Water Park president Guy Braybrook says the expansive venue south of Moree was ideal to host Run the Plains.

“This new event is a great initiative and helps encourage multiple uses for the water park,” Mr Braybrook said.

“We encourage whatever events we can have there that will work for the community and work for us.”

Tourism board member Felicity Taylor, who helped establish 2400 Run Club two years ago, said events like Run the Plains was often a topic of conversation among club members.

“This is something we’ve spoken about a lot. We’ve got the grant this year, which is excellent.

Telcos to move on 3G closure despite inquiry fears Telstra and Optus have dismissed calls to delay the 3G mobile network shutdown after an inquiry warned threats to public safety were "too great to ignore".

Telstra is due to close the ageing network on August 31, having delayed its June deadline, while Optus will shut down from September.

TPG/Vodafone closed its operation in January.

A Senate inquiry examining the potential risks of the closure has been told critical medical equipment, fire alarms, EFTPOS machines and waste and water infrastructure could be cut off in the shutdown.

Users of cardiac monitors and medical alarms could be unaware their devices rely on 3G until after the network ceases operation, according to industry experts.

There have been long-running concerns about some mobile phones that will not be able to connect to triple zero on the 4G network.

The inquiry on Thursday released an interim report recommending the federal government meet urgently with Optus and Telstra to extend their shutdown deadlines to allow for an extensive audit of affected devices.

"The committee believes the dangers to public safety, business continuity and the provision of essential services as a result of the shutdown are too great to ignore and that the shutdown must be delayed until these concerns are sufficiently addressed," the report said.

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said the telcos had made significant efforts to reach affected customers.

But she acknowledged there was more work to do, with about 77,000 mobile phones in use that will not be able to make emergency calls after the closure.

These devices - often bought overseas or second-hand - use 4G data for regular calls and texts but bump triple-zero calls to 3G because they are not enabled with a technology called Voice over LTE. Users might not realise their phone is configured this way by the manufacturer until the 3G network is switched off.

All telcos have a service for customers to check the status of their device by texting "3" to the number 3498.

"We strongly encourage all Australians to check their device via the SMS service, respond to messages from your mobile provider and take action," Ms Rowland said.

The number of these devices in use has reduced from 740,000 in March after the government formed an industry working group.

Optus executive Andrew Sheridan acknowledged the inquiry's recommendations but said the telco was working to mitigate public safety risks.

It has sent 3.2 million messages to affected customers, provided free and subsidised handsets and engaged with businesses that manage devices such as alarms, Mr Sheridan said.

levels of support to our customers during the 3G switch off through our dedicated teams and keeping device offers open."

A Telstra spokesman said the company had been warning of the need for preparation since setting the closure date of its 3G network almost five years ago.

"The vast majority of our customers have taken the necessary action to update their devices and we thank them for that. This is reflected by the fact that our 3G network accounts for only one per cent of our total

mobile network traffic," he said.

"We have a robust communication plan in place through to the closure date and have established processes to help customers after the closure who have yet to migrate."

Both telcos say switching off 3G will allow them to repurpose spectrum to provide better 4G and 5G coverage, including in regional and rural areas.

They have committed to providing equivalent coverage after the closure.

Farmers roundly welcome weedkiller court decision Agricultural groups have broadly welcomed a Federal Court finding that common weedkiller Roundup cannot be proven to cause cancer, saying it reinforces its safety for use in food production.

Justice Michael Lee ruled there was not enough evidence to say glyphosate - the active ingredient in Roundup - was capable of causing non-Hodgkin lymphoma in humans.

A class action led by Maurice Blackburn included more than 800 Australian cancer patients.

Glyphosate is one of the most common products farmers and home gardeners use to kill weeds, and is registered by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicine Authority.

"The decision from the Federal Court ... reinforces that our regulator is doing its job to ensure the health and safety of our farmers, communities and environment," National Farmers' Federation president David Jochinke said in a statement.

Bayer, which acquired Roundup's

producer Monsanto in 2018, welcomed the ruling and described it as a win for farmers.

"These products support farmers in doing what they do best - putting food on the tables of Australians," managing director Warren Inwood said.

Maurice Blackburn lawyer Lee Taylor said they would review the judgment before deciding on their next steps.

Justice Lee only needed to consider the question of general causation - not the specific claims of lead applicant Kelvin McNickle or the other class action group members.

The judge said the science was "not all one way" and some of the expert witnesses conceded there were possible links between glyphosate and cancer in humans.

But he ruled on the state of the evidence, and on the balance of probabilities, he could not determine there was a causal link between Roundup and cancer.

GrainGrowers boss Shona Gawel said glyphosate enables growers to control

weeds without needing to plough or till the soil and is widely used in the industry.

"While the decision does not impact the immediate registration and use of glyphosate, it publicly reinforces a farming tool that is used by growers for Australian cropping conditions," Ms Gawel said.

Andrew Weidemann, a Victorian grower from Grain Producers Australia, said the decision reinforced the herbicide's safety for use in food production.

"Ninety-six per cent of farmers across Australia would be all using glyphosate somewhere in their farming operation," he told AAP. CropLife Australia also welcomed the

ruling, saying it was in line with every scientific regulatory authority.

"Aside from the overwhelming amount of scientific data, there are decades of lived experience in the US Agricultural Health Study," chief executive Matthew Cossey said.

"Since 1993, the US study has followed over 57,000 farmers and licensed pesticide applicators and confirmed that there is no association between glyphosate use and cancer of any kind."

A spokesman for the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority said the body would consider the judge's decision.
