Baradine marks centenary on Remembrance Day The Remembrance Day service held in Baradine last week carried added significance when community gathered to remember those who served and to honour a century of memories within the town’s cherished Memorial Hall.

wreath-laying ceremony and the unveiling of the centenary plaque.

Ritchie Milgate gave the Welcome to Countr y and Baradine RSL secretary, Brad Edwards paid tribute to the community members of 1925 who first envisioned the hall as a living memorial to the district’s servicemen.

“On this day each year, we gather to honour the courage, sacrifice and service of the men and women who have worn our nation’s uniform,” Mr Edwards said. “ We pa use to g eth e r in g ratitude to remember those who did not return, to a ck n ow l ed g e th ose w h o s e r ve d a n d ca m e h o m e

fo reve r chang ed, and to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy because of them.

“However, this year, our service carries an extra layer of significance. On this day, exactly 100 years ago, the fo u n d a t i o n s to n e o f t h e Baradine Memorial Hall was laid.”

Baradine home destroyed in fierce blaze

Fire ripped through a Baradine residence last week when extreme weather conditions fuelled a fast-moving blaze.

by LIZ CUTTS Ba rad i ne residents l ooked on with shock on Tuesday, 11 November, when a fire erupted amid a high-fire-danger warning that left the Bligh Street home completely destroyed despite the tireless efforts of Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers battling to bring it under control.

Ba radine RFS captain, Phi l Hensby said total fire bans were in place due to the forecast for strong winds.

“At 20.34 hours, pagers were activated for a structure fire for the residence adjoining the Baradine creek,” Mr Hensby said.

“Upon arrival it was observed

that the house was fully involved and four adjoining houses were under immediate threat from both flames and embers. The sole occupant of the house was accounted for.

“Of some concern was the fact that the fire had started to make a run for the heavily-vegetated creek, with a strong south-west wind blowing. Extra support was requested and work began on the structural fire, neighbouring p rope r t y p rotecti on and on extinguishing the fire in the creek.”

M r H e n s by s a i d b r i g a d e s arrived from Coonabarabran Fire and Rescue NSW, and RFS units from Bugaldie and Goorianawa, w ith pol ice and ambulance

services also on scene.

“The ex tra f i re crews were placed in another road and lane, which also ran to the creek, as the fire was still advancing in the creek threatening properties,” he added. “ By 2 3: 0 0 h o u r s t h e m a i n structural fire was smouldering and the creek fire had been e x t i n g u i s h e d a n d n o ot h e r property had been affected.

“It was a brilliant display of how all crews worked together as a team to achieve the terrific result of saving the other residences and stopping the fire in the creek.”

Macquarie Street residents, John and Kim Tym, whose home i s l ocated beh i nd the bu r nt

property, said they endured a stressful time as the fire advanced toward their fence line “When we realised that the house behind us was on fire it was very distressing,” Mrs Tym said.

“We were concerned for the gentleman who lived there and the animals that he had. As the flames became more intense and the fire began to spread into the lane and then the creek, it was dangerously close to our shed and yard. It was a terrifying experience – one that makes you feel so useless. The concern was that if the fire spread to the creek, then it would just get away.

“Once the fire truck came down the lane, they quick ly

extinguished it and relief was felt by all the residents. Fire is a scary thing. “ I wou l d l i ke to than k the firefighters for their response and the service they give. We are very lucky to have people who give of their time for others. I think the aftermath of the experience has remained with me and has shaken me.”

The Ba rad i ne RFS b r igade remained at the scene unti l the early hours of the following morning to ensure any minor flare ups were dealt with.

No further details have been released at this stage, and the cause of the house fire remains under investigation.

The intensity of the house fire in Bligh Street, Baradine, was of concern to local residents.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR  editor@coonabarabrantimes.com Why do I persist in pursuing positive results for persons who have had unexplained fluctuating and quite possibly overcharges of their domestic water bills from the Warrumbungle Shire Council?

Because it matters!

Particularly to let persons know that they are being respected as persons, at least by another person – namely, me.

Certainly not to the Warrumbungle Shire Council (WSC) – public servants to serve the public.

I have personally been subject to such disrespect by persons within the WSC some years ago – and no, I did not receive an apology, let alone acknowledged. They know who they are.

I find it very interesting to read again, words recorded in the Coona Times 26 June 2025, words stated by Her Excellency the Honourable

Margaret Beazley, AC, KC Governor of NSW. I quote: “The local Council is the hub of everything and we find it both important and interesting to meet them because they give us an overview of what’s going on.”

Give us an overview of what’s going on? She sure got that wrong regarding WSC. Strangely, for whatever reason, at this point of writing a question came to mind – did you see Robodebt on SBS television recently? Don’t know why, just popped into my mind.

I wonder, should I send a copy of this letter to Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley?

Coolah tax agent shut down after misappropriation of client funds The Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) has terminated the registrations of Coolah Tax & Accounting Pty Ltd and its director, Denis Yeo, after uncovering extensive unlawful activity engineered by unregistered preparer, Randolf Rindfleish, that resulted in the misappropriation of nearly $1 million from clients.

I n a statement, the T PB sa id M r R i nd f lei sh orchestrated the misappropriation because of inadequate supervision and control by Coolah Tax & Accounting Pty Ltd and Mr Yeo. Over approximately three years, Mr Rindfleish lodged business activity statements, i nc ome t a x r et u r n s a nd JobKeeper forms on behalf of cl ient s , d i r e c t i n g t he refunds into bank accounts he controlled.

TPB investigations found his actions were possible due to the companies involved not having proper supervision or controls to ensure tax agent services provided on their behalf were competent and lawful.

As a result, the companies failed to prevent or detect his conduct, causing significant harm to clients and damaging trust in the tax system.

The statement said that d u e t o M r R i n d f l e i s h’s repeated misconduct, the T PB , Commissioner of Taxation, clients and the public could not trust Coolah Tax & Accounting Pty Ltd to act with integrity or meet the required professional standards.

The TPB’s firm response makes it clear – failing to supervise tax agent services and prevent misconduct will not be tolerated.

represented a serious breach of trust and a direct threat to the integrity of the tax system.

“The TPB is committed to protecting the community from individuals who exploit the privileged position of a tax practitioner for personal gain,” Mr de Cure said.

“Our decision to terminate the registration of Coolah Tax & Accounting and Denis Yeo reflects the seriousness of these breaches and our det er m i n at ion t o uphold the h ighest standa rds of professional conduct.”

T he mayor refer red enquiries to Warrumbungle S h i r e C ou n c i l ’s g e ne r a l manager, citing section 6.3 of Council’s media policy, which governs statements on operational and administrative matters, and did not provide a personal comment.

The TPB findings concern M r R i nd f le i s h’s pr i v at e conduct , a nd there is no suggestion that Cr Rindfleish had any involvement in or knowledge of these matters.

A seat to remember You may have noticed that more and more metal seats have been popping up around Coonabarabran, all with the same distinct style, but all unique in their designs. Where have they come from? What do they represent? Who is making them?

by MOLLY SHANNON Local craftsman Jez Va n K u y l , f r o m J & R Contracting, is the man behind these creations, helping b r ing pa r t of Coonaba rab ran’s history out of the books and into the open.

“I didn't realise there was so much history in the town – these projects have definitely opened our eyes and it has been an honour to build all these chairs,” Jez said.

“It’s all custom stuff t h a t w e d o , t h e r e’s no real fixed product.

Whatever the customer wants is what we usually give them, based on our recommendations.”

Customers often bring in an idea or image to start with.

“If they a re af ter something custom like a por trait, I draw the sketch on paper, scan it, then I vector trace it on CAD software,” he said.

Fo r Jez, the seats re p re s e nt m o re t h a n just Coonaba rab ran history, they offer a way to encourage tourists to stay longer – to stop and have a look around.

Although the re a re no concrete p l ans i n p l ace, J ez env i sa g es small improvements to give Coonabarabran a much-needed facelift.

“I do think the town lack s bi ns, so we're working with Kodi Brady and Terry Tighe to look at putting some in,” he said.

“Seeing some town ent ra n ces co m i ng to the Shi re would be nice – and trying just to beautify the town a little bit mo re to get mo re tourism.

“I’d like to see more signs and places where people can walk and learn about the town.”

The design features a portrait of both the boys as well as an excerpt f ro m t h e p o e m Ko d i read out at the boys’ vigil.

This special seat offers the community a place to reflect, mourn and keep the boys’ memory alive.

“It obviously hits close to h o m e q u i t e a l ot because I’ve got kids myself, so it’s an honour to work on those types of projects,” Jez said.

“This new memor ial stands strong, just like the love that continues to su r round Sam and Max,” Kodi said. “ F o r e v e r remembe red, fo reve r missed, and forever a part of this community.”

Baradine Remembrance service FROM FRONT “This Memorial Hall was built as a living monument – a place where the community could gather to honour the fallen, to support one another and to preserve the memory of service and sacrifice for generations to come.

“Over the past centur y, this hall has seen it all; weddings, concer ts, debutante balls, dances, meetings, fundraisers and, of course, commemorative ser vices just like this one. It has been pa r t of ou r l ives fo r generations and it has carried the spirit of this tow n t h ro ug h g o od times and hard times alike. For a century, it has stood as a proud symbol of Baradine’s gratitude, resilience, and community spirit.”

To mark the centenary a com memo rative plaque was unveiled by special guest M r Chaffey and president of the Ba rad i ne RSL Sub-branch, Michael Ross.

P i p e r, D o u g K i n g played ‘The Lament’ as floral tributes were laid at the plaque. Students from Baradine Central School and St John’s School then read the Roll Call of Honour of those who enlisted and served from Baradine to fight in World War I . T h i s wa s fo l l owed by the Last Post, the Ode and one-minute’s silence, followed by the Reveille.

Emotional M r Chaf fey said he was delighted to receive the invitation to be pa r t of the centenary ceremony.

“Remembrance Day is an emotional time for so many people, I can see in the faces in the crowd, as we remember those people that have given so much for the freedoms that we enjoy today,” he said.

“Many of those people unfortunately didn' t come home from those conflicts, par ticularly in World War I.

“As I arrived at the ha l l today, I l ooked at the honour rolls for those who ser ved in World War I and World War II – those people from Baradine, and the wider community, who gave so much to make sure that we can enjoy the lives that we have today.

“It is a very hear t warming to see so many school students at this service.

A s yo u l ea r n a b o ut conflicts, particularly Wo r ld Wa r I and a l l the other conflicts that have happened since then, and those that are happening right now around the world, you also learn about the responsibility that we have a s p ro ud Aust ral ians to make

sure that we continue to love and defend this country that we live in.

“It has only been a short time since I took on the position as the new Federal Member for the seat of Parks. I have been to Canberra now for several sittings and as I dr ive up to Parliament house and I see that amazing Australian flag above.

It is about the size of a doub l e - decke r bus, my heart skips a beat because of the significance of being appointed to serve this amazing country and the freedoms that we have because of those who sacrificed so much in a war that we should never forget.

“It is great to be here fo r t h i s ce l e b rat i o n

of 10 0 ye a r s of t h e Baradine Memorial Hall and the many things that have happened here. It is heartening to see that the community has made su re that this building has been looked af ter so well and I hope that this will continue for the next 100 years.”

To round off the day’s commemorations, Mr Chaf fey p resented awards to the student winners of the Centenary Engineering Challenge, recognising their innovative designs and cont r i bution to the town’s centenary celebrations. A barbecue lunch followed, provided by the members of the Baradine RSL Sub branch.

Butler: No speed limit reductions Roy Butler, Member for Barwon, has said it’s time for country people to unite against a nanny-state proposal by the Federal Government to lower speed limits on open roads by adding their signature to a new petition.

Last week, Mr Butler directed a question to the Minister for Roads and Regional Transport, Jenny Aitchison, in NSW Parliament. He asked if her government would consider the views of country people before considering the Federal proposal to lower the default speed limit on open roads from 100km/h to 80km/h.

“This proposal would have an unacceptable impact on the daily lives of country people,” Mr Butler said.

“A lower speed limit

means longer trips and less time in the day for family, community and work. It would increase the isolation that many country people experience, which has its own negative health impacts.”

Minister Aitchison replied that “the government does n o t su p p o r t b l a n k e t speed zone reviews across NSW,” adding, “speed zones should be appropriate to the conditions of the road and speed is one element,” in road safety.

“Now is the time for people to sign my petition and show the Minister that lower speed limits are not the right solution for country roads,” Mr Butler said.

He is asking people to add their signatures to his petition, which states: “Country people deserve respect for our ability to drive to local conditions, and we reject this nannystate proposal to remove our freedoms”.

The petition is available at Mr Butler’s website.

Service, spirit and saddles: Spur Ranch hits Coona The RSL Life Care Spur Ranch Equine program team enjoyed an exceptional week in Coonabarabran from 10-15 November, where participants experienced a taste of country life, learning skills on the land, competing for the Cup in a team-sorting event and reflected on the service and devotion of veterans past and serving.

The week began with a moving night at Coonabarabran High School for the screening of the short film, ‘Bringing his spirit home’.

Peter Milliken, the great nephew of Coonabarabran born WWl hero, William Allen Irwin DCM, was present on the night.

The question and answer session held with Peter following the film was both intriguing and emotional. He revealed t h e d i r e c t o r, D y l a n Nicholls, was planning an extended 30-minute documentary for broadcast on national television next year.

Filming for that production could take place around Coonabarabran.

“Peter led our veterans and mustersupport team in a parade down the m a i n s t re e t f o r t h e Coonabarabran’s Remembrance Day ceremony,” said Gerard Sutton, Spur Ranch riding instructor. “ S e v e r a l o f

William Allen Irwin’s descendants were present to hear Coonabarabran RSL Sub-branch president, Kevin Barrington, acknowledge his bravery.

“The gesture meant a great deal to all of William Allen Irwin DCM’s family.”

Those formalities were followed by a team-sorting competition, held at the Coonabarabran Showground, named in honour of William Allen Irwin DCM. There are plans to expand the format of the competition next year to include more junior local riders.

The group also spent two thrilling days mustering cattle on Adam Flood and Callen Thompson’s properties.

Those experiences were coupled with a full day learning the ins and outs of cattle production, including processes such as ear tagging and pregnancy testing, courtesy of David Grant, from DG Livestock

Agency, and Carlene Scifleet, at Popagundi.

“Their generosity of spirit was life-changing for this year’s crop of c u r re n t a n d f o r m e r military personnel, Mr Sutton said.

“Several of our veterans are now planning their next trip to the Warrumbungle Shire and exploring the possibility of sponsoring a race at the Coonabarabran Cup. “We’d like to extend a huge thank you to the entire community for their warm welcome, but make special mention of the Coonabarabran Jockey Club and Kerry Vallette in particular.

“Their facilities are first class, no request is too great and the racecourse is the perfect venue to bring a group like ours together.”

A hall of history: Baradine’s 100-year tribute A century of memories was honoured when community gathered for the Baradine Memorial Hall Centenary Dinner, marking 100 years since the foundation stone of the hall was laid as a tribute to local military service and sacrifice.

by LIZ CUTTS Baradine came together in fine style on Saturday, 8 November, when guests and visitors filled the original 1925 constructed hall for an event that celebrated communit y spi r it and s h a red h i s to r y i n t h e heart of the town.

Secretar y of the Baradine RSL sub branch, Brad Edwards welcomed everyone to the celebration.

“Tonight, we reflect not only on a building that has stood proudly since 1925, but on the generations of people who have filled it with life – from dances and debutante bal l s, to war-time farewells, communit y meetings, concer ts, and celebrations just like this one,” Mr Edwards said.

“Th i s ha l l ho lds the heartbeat of Baradine. It is a symbol of resilience, togetherness, and history and tonight, we honour that legacy.

“We’ll share stor ies, enjoy wonderful c o m p a n y a n d take a moment to acknowledge the vol untee r s and v i s i o n a r i e s w h o’ve contributed to the hall’s enduring place in our town’s story.

“Over the years, many dedicated community m e m b e r s, vo l u nte e r s and local organisations have contributed t h e i r t i m e, s k i l l s a n d support to the ongoing improvements and upkeep of the Baradine Memorial Hall and I hope you enjoy this m e m o ra b l e eve nt a s we reflect on what this iconic building means to our town.”

Du r ing the evening local military historian, Evelyn Hampton captivated the audience with a detailed account of her extensive research into the men who enlisted at Baradine to serve in the First World War. She explained how each name recorded on the town’s honour rolls represents a unique story of cou rage, ha rdship and sacrifice.

Ms Hampton told guests that her aim was

to en su re eve r y m a n who left Baradine for the battlefields of Europe is remembered not just as a name, but as a person with deep ties to the community.

The eveni ng al so featured a visual p resentation by Li z Cutts, who traced t h e evo l u t i o n o f t h e Memorial Hall from its construction in 1925 to the major improvement projects carried out over the past decade. Using h i s to r i c p h oto g ra p h s and before- and- after images, she showed how community effort and vol untee r ded ication

have restored the hall to its former prominence while ensuring it remains functional for modern events.

Memories Jeff Matthews added a personal touch to the evening as he shared memor ies of h i s g r a n d f a t h e r, A l f Pincham, who was in the official group when the

hall’s foundation stone was laid in 1925.

The nostalgic mood conti nued as othe r com m un it y membe r s shared their own recollections of events held in the hall over the decades.

Ker r y Davison, who had t ravel led f rom nor thern Queensland with her husband Alan and brother

Shaun Sheahan fo r the event, read poems written during WWI by her g randfather, Dan Sheahan, who enlisted from the Baradine area.

“He joined up here with five other chaps in 1916 and they left from Narrabri on the train,” she said. “ D a n w rote poet r y p rev i o u s to g o i n g to war and continued to

w r ite du r ing the wa r.

He published a book in the 70s and a second edition was published in the 80s. We are hoping to produce another one next year.

“None of the family had ever been to this a rea and we have always wondered what brought him here. We knew he lived and worked in owned

some land around the Bellingen area, but we didn’t know about this a rea. We we re l uck y enough to find out about t h e ce nte n a r y eve nt here and the fact that Dan’s name appears on the honour role at the Bugaldie Hall.

“It has rather been like connecting the dots and we are delighted to be here.”

Council seeks community voices for Rail Trail planning Warrumbungle Shire Council is inviting nominations from the community for membership of the Castlereagh River Coonabarabran Rail Trail Steering Committee, with four community representative positions available.

The committee will play a key role in the first stage of planning and investigation for a proposed rail trail along the disused rail corridor in Coonabarabran, following the process outlined in the NSW Government’s Rail Trail Framework.

Council is seeking to develop a business case to convert the corridor into a multi-use rail tra i l for pedestr ia ns and cyclists, connecting the Castlereagh River, Neilson Park and the nearby sports’ precinct.

C o u n c i l ’s g e n e r a l manager, Mr Lindsay Mason, said the proposed rail trail builds on recent rehabilitation work along the Castlereagh River and supports the Real Country – Destination Strategic Plan adopted

by Council in 2024.

A bright 98th birthday for Rita Arriving the same year Australia’s parliament moved to Canberra, Rita Magann (nee Morrissey) lived in a world before aeroplanes had flown across the Pacific Ocean.

Rita was born in Coonabarabran on 13 November 1927 and raised on her family’s farm at La Perouse Gardens, a mixed fruit orchard/market garden and beef and sheep farm.

Rita celebrated her 98th birthday at the Royal Hotel in

Coonabarabran last Saturday, 15 November, where she was joined by her six children and most of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with everyone wearing the birthday girl’s favourite colour – yellow.

Celebrating 73 years of love and loyalty Saturday, 15 November marked an extraordinary milestone for local couple John and Norma Roberts, celebrating an incredible 73 years of marriage – a rare achievement and a testament to a lifetime built on hard work, friendship and unwavering dedication to one another.

Norma was born in Coonabarabran and lived at Bugaldie with her parents, Edwin and Lola Phillips, and her four brothers – John, Teddy, Barry and Ronny.

John Rober ts lived at Wittenbri, Baradine, with his parents, Andrew and Edith Roberts, and his sisters Joan and Beth and brother Athol.

John and Norma were ma r r ied in the Anglican Church, Coonabarabran, on 15 November, 1952 and spent the first few years of their married life in Bugaldie before moving to Co o n a b a ra b ra n, where they have lived ever since.

John worked as a sha re fa r me r and Norma was a h o m e m a ke r. T h ey raised four children –

daughters Wendy and B ronw yn, and sons Paul and Glenn – all of whom attended school

locally.

Jo h n ha s en j oyed a lifetime of hobbies, i n c l u d i n g g o - ka r t s ,

moto r bi kes, wate r skiing, fishing and restoring vintage cars and antique furniture.

Both he and No r ma were active members of the local Riding for the Disabled organisation for many years.

In her younger days, Nor ma loved tennis, fishing and water

skiing. Later in life she discovered a passion fo r a r t, becoming a dedicated member of WAACI (Warrumbungle Arts and Crafts Inc), and now spends her spare time knitting beanies

for the homeless.

Outgoing, longserving president, Fay Chapman gave a detailed report of the past 12 months, activities being catering, a luncheon for the Governor of NSW Margaret Beazley and husband Mr Dennis Wilson in June, handicraft activities, great meetings on

international activities, members attending Bunny Bazaar, meat tasting, display at the local Show, attending group meetings and other branches’ events.

Heather Edgell chaired the meeting and declared all positions vacant.

Elected were: President – Donna Burton, secretary – Marlene Boshier, treasurer – Fay Chapman, publicity – Sherree Conn, handicraft – Gail Houghton, international and cultural – Brenda Young,

hall secretary – Debbie Howroyd, craft shop – Annette Vickery.

We have regular hall bookings, which we appreciate, as this is needed to keep our hall in tip-top shape Thank you to all who use the hall.

An important discussion took place around a change to our meeting time. We have always been the evening branch, but, as time goes by and the needs of members change, we all agreed to change from a night meeting

to a daytime meeting.

Meetings have always been held on the second Tuesday of the month, but the time will now change to 2pm, making it more suitable for members.

The Craft Shop at our premises is still operating and we thank the volunteers whose dedication keeps this beautiful shop open.

Ukerbarley bushfire contained The Bone Trail fire burning north-west of Coonabarabran has been safely contained as a result of a swift and coordinated response from the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and Coonabarabran Rural Fire Service.

by CLAUDIA HEANEY On 8 November, a fire started on the Bone Trail, meeting the Ukerbarley Aboriginal area, situated 11 kilometres north-west of Coonabarabran.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) spokesperson, Greg Mills said the source of ignition was likely due to natural causes.

“A fire approximately 2 90 hecta res i n si ze occurred in Pilliga State Conser vation Area the weekend of 8-9 November 2025, which was likely started by lightning,” Mr Mills said.

“The fire has remained at advice level, meaning surrounding proper ties are at no current risk.

“The f i re has been co nta i n e d a n d t h e re is no threat to life and property.”

N SW N at i o n a l Pa r k s and local organisations such as Coonabarabran Rural Fire Service worked together to control the blaze.

“T he N SW Ru ra l F i re Service provided support to NSW NPWS to determine the fire’s location and co m m e n ce a n i n i t i a l response,” Mr Mills said.

He said NSW NPWS had

successfully limited the spread and continued to monitor the situation.

“A p p r o x i m a t e l y 2 0 NSW NPWS f i ref ighters worked to contain the fire through backburning and mechanical control lines.

“NPWS is maintaining vigilance and monitoring the fire until it’s declared out.”

Specialised aircraft and heavy machinery were used to provide access and aid to the affected location.

“Up to three aircraft were used to water bomb the f i re, and a fou r th aircraft was used for aerial

observation,” Mr Mills said.

“Heav y plant was used to provide access and create strong containment lines from which firefighters could gain control of the fire.”

It is unknown if the fire has impacted Aboriginal artefacts in the area.

The local community is urged to keep up to date with the status of the fire and continue practicing safe behaviour this fire season. “ N P W S e n co u ra g e s people to monitor the Hazards Near Me app for updates, ” Mr Mills said.

The race of a lifetime Readers of the Coonabarabran Times, may recall a story we covered in October on the world’s richest race for country-trained horses – The Kosciuszko.

by MOLLY SHANNON Held on Everest Day at Royal Randwick, The Kosciuszko runs after the Everest.

Blake Palmer, born in Coonabarabran and now based in Narrabri, had bought what he thought was a meat-tray raffle ticket at the Imperial Hotel in Coonabarabran.

Instead, he ended up with one of the 14 sweepstake tickets for the Kosciuszko, giving him a shot at the $1,000,000 first prize.

Blake chose the horse ‘Lisztomania’, a seven-year-old chestnut gelding based in Inverell.

Originally unsure if he would make it to the race, Blake did make the trip – and took a few mates along with him.

“It was awesome,” Blake said. “ M y h o r s e , Lisztomania, was nearly second last until the last 200 metres and then jumped all the way up – it was like a movie.

“The trainer and the owners were really cool.

We went out to dinner

with them the night before and after the race as well, it was great.

“My friends and I were up in the members’ box, which overlooks where they parade the horses, which was nice – but stubbies were still $16 each!

“But at that point money didn't really exist in my brain, so it didn’t matter to me.”

While Lisztomania didn’t win this year’s Kosciuszko, it finished fourth, a feat which earned total prize money of $100,000.

“So, with the 50-50 split after the jockey’s fees and everything, I took home about 40 grand,” Blake said.

Receiving $40,000 in prize money is no small thing, but Blake already has plans for how to use it.

“Some of it's turning into a kitchen, I know that much,” he said.

“But I think I’ll have to buy a meat tray to complete the loop.”

This isn’t the first time a winning ticket from Coona has landed fourth place in The Kosciuszko.

Local horse enthusiast Brett Bowman also scored a ticket in a previous year, finishing fourth with the horse, Boom Torque.

“I mean, to be honest, I’ll never do anything like that again,” Blake said.

“I didn’t follow horse racing before – and I still don’t – but it was a cool experience, sort of a oncein-a-lifetime chance.

“The Imperial, that’s two winners they’ve had two years in a row, and both got fourth place.

“So, something's in the waters there!”

Full gallop to the finals Local barrel racer Annie Edwards has returned from the 2025 ATRA Circle L Australia National Finals with a story worthy of the big stage – and a cheque to prove it. Competing in Capella, Queensland, against some of the toughest and most seasoned riders in the country, Annie and her steadfast horse, Clancy, clocked two solid runs and claimed third place in the 3D, marking an impressive debut on the national scene.

Coonabarabran Times journalist, Claudia Heaney caught up with Annie for full wrap-up of the event.

When did you compete?

We left on 25 September and travelled to Surat.

Then we t ravel l ed to Emerald and I competed in my first Central Queensland j a c k p ot o n 2 7-2 8 S e p t e m b e r, w h e r e we were fractionally out of the money. We packed up camp and moved on to Capella, about 45 minutes north of Emerald, where the finals were held.

We competed on 4-5 October.

Did you compete solely on your horse, Clancy?

Clancy was my only competing horse that came on the trip with me. He had lots of work to do for one horse, but he is a mighty little fella and held it together for me.

How were you feeling in the lead-up to the event?

The tr ip was super exciting. I went up with my boyfriend and his fami ly, so there was never a dull moment.

The nerves didn’t really hit until the morning of my first run at the National Finals. Even with the ner ves, the whole experience was loads of fun.

How would you describe the level of competition you faced in Queensland?

T h e c o m p et i t i o n i n Queensland was super fierce. All the women and girls were so lovely and supportive of each other, but friendly fire cer tainly fuelled the

c o m p et i t i o n . T h e r e were lots of competitors from the professional rodeo circuit, so it was very intimidating, but an awesome way to step up my riding and become mo re competitive.

How did you feel about you r pe r fo rmance during the event?

I feel my ner ves got to me before each of my rides, which I did expect being my first event of that scale.

How did you feel about Clancy’s performance?

Clancy was an absolute superstar! He held himself together despite my nerves and put dow n t wo safe, consistent runs, earning us third place in the 3 D and a nice l it tle cheque to come home with.

What did it mean to you to be competing at a national level – and to share this experience with Clancy?

It was an a wesome ex p e r i e n ce – a n d I won’t say once in a lifetime, because we fully intend on going there again. Getting to go to such a massive event w ith my l it t l e childhood horse made it even more special.

We’ve put in a lot of h a r d ya r d s i n h e r e at home throughout the season, travelling

a l l ove r the s tate, s q u e ez i n g i n e a r l y morning rides before work and late nights getting ready to go a way. So, to g et to compete at Nationals against some of the best in the country felt like such a reward for all the hard work that was put in behind the scenes.

What kind of support did you receive in the lead-up to and after the competition?

I rece i ved so m uch support from everyone that’s been involved r ight f rom the sta r t.

My family have been incredible, loaning me vehicles to tow with, helping out with fuel costs and travelling to watch me compete.

They are always the f i r st people to of fer encouragement to ke e p m e g o i n g .

Throughout Nationals I had my little support network back home, watching the Nationals’ livestream

so they didn’t miss a thing – even though they couldn’t be with me in Queensland.

The suppor t from my pa r tn e r a n d h i s fam i l y was un rea l, doing all the driving up nor th and letting me tag along on their Nationals’ adventure too. Aiden was always right there to tighten my cinch before a run, put my bands on and still be on the sidelines to film. He really has been a driving force behind this team and I wouldn’t have been able to do the big trip without him.

What are you striving for next in barrel racing?

With the 2026 season now well under way, I’ve already travelled a s fa r a s G o u l b u r n chasing another state title, so it’s safe to say Clancy and I will still be making the rounds next year and the National Finals will definitely be in our sights again.

In the pink: Tee-ing off for a good cause

A sea of pink shimmered across the Narrabri golf course recently as residents and visitors rallied, dressing up and hitting the green to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation and raise funds and awareness for an important cause that’s sadly close to too many locals’ hearts.

The statistics are sobering: every day, 56 Australians are diagnosed with breast cancer – more than 20,000 each year.

One in seven women and one in 600 men will face this diagnosis in their lifetime, according to the Foundation.

Around 1000 young women aged under 40 are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, equivalent to about three young women each day.

Every year, more than 3300 people in Australia, including 40 men, will die from breast cancer.

That is nine people in Australia a day dying from the disease.

There’s no doubt the numbers are confronting, but they also serve as a powerful reminder of why ongoing awareness, research, and support are so vital because the statistics represent real people—family members, friends, neighbours, loved ones whose lives are forever changed.

“I was pretty blown away by the support on the day,” said local Emma Maxwell, who has been passionate about breast

cancer fundraising for many years now.

She tragically lost her mum Karlene to the disease last month, just seven days before the charity golf day was held on Sunday, November 2.

“I wasn’t going to attend, and then dad convinced me and said I’d put so much work into it, and I should go,” said Emma.

“There were definitely some emotional moments, but the warmth and happiness from everyone there made the day feel more uplifting than sad.”

“Mum would’ve loved it because she was right into golf. I probably felt closer to mum by being there,” she said.

“Mum loved a good fundraiser and raising awareness.”

For years now, Emma has put together a National Breast Cancer Foundation fundraiser in October, starting small with selling cakes at work and then expanding to t-shirts and more – every cent has helped and hopefully inspired people to be more aware and get health checks.

In some good news, thanks to research and early detection, the death rate has dropped by more than 40 per cent since 1994, according to The National Breast Cancer Foundation.

One of Emma’s main messages to the community is to prioritise their health and to get regular checks. If the pink charity golf day goes ahead again next year, she hopes to have the mobile breast screening bus onsite.

“People put off getting checked all the time,” said Emma.

“Back in 2010, when mum was first diagnosed, she always prioritised work and she had a lot on at the time, and she just wouldn’t commit to a doctor’s appointment, and then when she did, they said the lump was six months old.

“So, mum used to always say to me ‘if you have anything that you’re worried about, you need to go to the doctor, you need to put that first’.”

As well as the charity golf day

being a fun day out, Emma said there was also comfort and support found by the sharing of experiences in a casual setting, between holes or back at the club afterwards.

“There’s usually someone who knows someone who has been impacted by breast cancer,” she said.

“When you start talking to people, they’ll open up and say ‘my aunty or my mother-in-law’ or another family member.

“Even when I started doing the fundraisers through work, I couldn’t believe the support and people would just share their stories.”

Emma welcomed feedback from the day and praised the golf club, her friends, community members, volunteers, golfers and golfing enthusiasts along with the spon-

sors for helping to make the pink charity golf day such as success, fundraising an impressive $7707 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

“As I said, I was just blown away by the support and donations, and just how much the golf club was willing to do – from organising live music, Chef B Pizza and all the behind-the-scenes help they offered to support the cause.”

While the golf match was a ninehole event, it was so popular that some teams played on the front nine while others played on the back nine.

The NSW Government and the Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) are investing $15.6 million to deliver life-changing opportunities for young people living in regional and remote NSW, said a media statement released by Police Minister Yasmin Catley and Minister for Regional NSW Tara Moriarty.

This funding commitment will provide young people experiencing the pressures of societal challenges and disadvantage access to PCYC’s youth programs.

PCYC currently delivers different programs into 22 locations including Walgett, Kempsey, Bourke, Broken Hill, Moree and Lismore, based on community need,

BOSCAR data, local police information, and experience from PCYC’s Youth Programs team.

Over the four-year partnership, PCYC NSW will deliver 278 life-changing programs across regional NSW. The NSW Government is contributing $10 million to the partnership while PCYC will co-contribute $5.66 million. Flexibility will be built into this model, allowing PCYC’s Youth Programs to transition to alternative locations as circumstances change and needs are evaluated. Dugald Saunders steps down as NSW Nationals Leader In a shock resignation, Dugald Saunders has stepped away from his role as leader of the NSW Nationals.

“For the past two and a half years I have had the privilege of leading the NSW Nationals - today I am stepping down from that position,” said a media statement released on Monday morning.

“It’s been an honour to lead the Parliamentary team during a challenging time in Opposition and I’ve always done my best to

represent regional NSW. “It’s a difficult decision but it is the right time for me to take a step back and focus more on my family and myself.

“It’s also the right time to allow a new leader to take up the fight ahead of the next election.

“I thank my family, my staff, my team and the party, for all of their support.

“I will continue to serve the people of the Dubbo electorate as their local member.”

Charges laid after alleged pursuit, Moree marks Remembrance Day aggravated break and enter Moree Plains Shire councillors, dignitaries, cadets, students Police news A man has faced court charged after an alleged police pursuit and aggravated break and enter in the state’s New England region, said a NSW Police Media statement released on November 11.

“About 4.50pm Saturday November 8, officers attached to New England Police District were patrolling Warialda – about 80km east of Moree – when they observed a Holden Commodore with irregular number plate placement.

“When the driver allegedly failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated.

“During the pursuit the vehicle allegedly turned off the Gwydir Highway onto a dirt track before returning to the highway heading west – at times on the incorrect side of the road – at speeds ranging from 140 kilometres per hour to 170km/hour in a signposted 100km/hour zone.

“The pursuit continued onto Eden Forest Road, Gravesend, before the vehicle turned into a rural property on Floods Tank Road and the driver ran from the scene.”

Upon searching the vehicle, the statement said police located and seized a wallet and what’s alleged to be drug paraphernalia. The vehicle was seized and taken to Inverell Police Station for forensic examination.

“About 11.45am Sunday November 9, a man was reportedly seen walking away from a shed on Glen Wood Road, Gravesend, carrying gun bags,” said the statement.

“Police were told the man

allegedly armed himself with a double-barrel shotgun and allegedly threatened the homeowner – a man aged in his 60s – before turning and walking into bushland.

“A short time later, the resident allegedly heard a round being discharged from the firearm, before a large-scale police operation ensued with Western Region specialist units attending including Tactical Operations Regional Support, Dog Unit, Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics Command and Aviation Command.

“Following investigations, about 3.45pm on November 9, police located and arrested a 35-yearold man at the Gwydir Highway, Gravesend. Nearby, police recovered a double-barrel shotgun wrapped in a camouflaged shirt.

The man was taken to Moree Police Station where he was charged with: Police pursuit - not stop drive at speed; owner not disclose identity of driver/passenger; aggravated enter dwelling with intent - knowing people there; possess loaded firearm endanger life not public place; use unauthorised firearm; possess ammunition without holding licence, and Detention application – arrest.

He was refused bail and faced Bail Division 5 on Monday November 10.

Serious speedway accident at Walcha A NSW Police Media statement released on Sunday said an investigation is underway after thirteen people were injured – one critically – when a speedway car crashed at Walcha in the state’s west overnight.

“Emergency services were called to Walcha showground on Derby Street about 6.15pm on Saturday November 15, after a vehicle competing in a race crashed through a fence and hit a mobile grandstand,” said the police media statement.

“By-standers rendered assistance before NSW Ambulance paramedics took eight men and three women – aged between 20 and 75 – to Walcha District Hospital.

“Of those eleven people, a 54-year-old man suffered critical injuries and a 34-year-old man sustained serious head injuries.

“They were treated at the scene before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital where they remain in a stable condition.

“A 74-year-old man was treated for multiple fractures and internal injuries and airlifted to St George

Hospital in a stable condition.

“A 48-year-old woman and two men – aged 54 and a 63 – were taken to Tamworth Hospital for minor injuries and have since been released.

“Another four people were taken to Armidale Hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being released.

“Two women later attended Walcha Hospital before they were taken to Armidale and Tamworth Hospital for minor injuries.

“Officers attached to Oxley Police District have been told the speedway car driver – a 27-yearold man – was involved in an ontrack collision immediately before his vehicle crashed through the fence.

“He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for minor injuries and taken to Walcha Hospital for mandatory testing.

“Specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit attended and examined the scene as inquiriries continue.”

Tight-knit village hosts inaugural Remembrance Day service

Baan Baa’s strong sense of community spirit was on full display on Tuesday, November 11, as locals gathered for the village’s inaugural Remembrance Day service.

Residents of the tight-knit and much-loved village have always been there for one another, and last week was no different, offering each other support and kindness as they united in Remembrance and grief.

The occasion was marked not only by the traditional commemoration of those lost in conflict and tributes to the brave men and women who have served our country and made sacrifices, but also by collective mourning for the accidental death of Lilly Chifor, whose memory added a deeply personal dimension to the proceedings.

Prior to the commencement of the Remembrance Day commemoration a minute’s silence was held in honour of Lilly, who sadly died in a tragic accident that occurred on Friday, November 7.

The president of the Boggabri RSL Sub-branch, Steve Eather, said it was a request from the village’s blossoming and proactive new pre-school to hold a service in Baan Baa. He took the request to a meeting of the Boggabri

Sub-branch, and they happily agreed.

Baan Baa might be quite small population-wise, but its proud residents always rally to host community events, services and occasions. The village hosts a very large gathering for the dawn service on Anzac Day, so the inclusion of preschool children served as a poignant reminder that Remembrance is a legacy handed down, and even the youngest members of the community are

part of this tradition.

The ceremony was led by Mr Eather with Narrabri Shire mayor Darrell Tiemens reading a prayer for the fallen.

Mr Eather laid the first wreath on behalf of the Boggabri RSL Subbranch, followed by Cr Tiemens on behalf of the Narrabri Shire Council, Chaplain Noel Williams from the Rural Fire Service and Outback Bush Chaplin, on behalf of the Rural Fire Service, Amelia Charters and Alice Evans on

behalf of Ooranga Preschool, Brenda Stewart on behalf of the Stewart families, and Noreen Boehm in memory of her great uncle killed in action in 1917 and her uncle killed in action 1940.

Following the formal proceedings, attendees were invited to enjoy morning tea in the Baan Baa Hall.

This provided an opportunity for neighbours and friends to come together, share memories, and support one another in their grief.

Many took the time to view the honour boards and the art and craft display, both of which highlighted the community’s ongoing commitment to Remembrance and creativity.
