Joe Young: growing for gold Coonabarabran’s Joe Young has proven once again that good farming runs in the family, taking out the central region title in this year’s AgShows NSW Championship Dryland Field Wheat Competition.

On Wednesday, 29 October, Joe was named regional finalist for the central division and will now proceed to the state level of judging.

T he a n nu a l c omp et it ion , r u n across four NSW regions, celebrates excel lence i n d r yla nd wheat production and the farmers behind it.

The young farmer from Napie r G r a z e a nd G r a i n , ne a r Coonabarabran, was one of nine farmers that threw their hat in the ring for judging.

“I didn’t do anything out of the ordinary this year, it was a natural rotation,” Joe said.

“We started off with three years of lucerne, which reduces our fertiliser inputs. “ Then, we start off with canola between the lucerne as a first-year crop, and then the second year is the wheat – which is the crop that went on to win the wheat competition.”

The paddock was judged on merits of yield (20 points for every tonne per hectare), trueness to type and purity, freedom from disease, evenness and condition, freedom from weeds, and farming practices.

Joe and his family are no strangers to winning wheat, having participated in the competition for close to 30 years, So what keeps them coming back?

“If we don't compete, someone else will win,” Joe laughed.

“It’s also interesting to see how everyone else is running compared to us – it's all a learning curve.”

This year, Joe was vying for the top prize against his sister, Nat Ballard.

“Originally, my Dad and I would c ompet e , but when my si st er ca me home, Dad d id n' t wa nt t o compete against her. So now it's just brother versus sister,” he said.

“I was just happy that my sister got all cocky with her paddock that

they were judging, and she's like, ‘I think I've got this in the bag’, and I'm like, ‘Well, we don't know who else has a better paddock’.

“A nd it ende d up b ei n g ve r y close...the guy that came second was just a bee’s dick off of winning!

“And my sister’s paddock ended up coming fourth.”

Expert opinion P ursehouse Rural ag ronomist, James Fleming, from Coonabarabran, said competitions like these were not only great for the community, but also helped keep local shows going.

“For most people, it's not actually about chasing the highest yield,” Mr Fleming said.

“There’s guys there that had lower yields, but it’s not about economics, it’s actually about pure yield. “ It ’s not wh ich one’s the most valuable, because we’ve got a couple of guys that graze the crops and then run it through the grain and they say, ‘Look, we’ll never win, but we’re supporting the show’.”

T h e j ud g i n g f o r J o e ’s wh e at was pretty straightforward, with established cropping practices in place.

Mr Fleming said that this year’s season in the Warrumbungle region finished dry, affecting the growth and development of crops.

It is expected that this will lead to a shorter than normal harvest.

He also predicts that yields for this year’s crops will be quite individual, with some having an outstanding year, while others may come in with an average season.

“I think it was a dry finish and we did have a dry winter as well,” Mr Fleming said.

“There was a big spill at the end where we needed a grain fill that we didn't get.

“The crops will come of quick or pretty evenly because of that dry finish.”

Showcase to empower region for the next big dry Gilgandra and Warrumbungle Shire Councils are joining forces to help local communities prepare for the future, launching the Castlereagh Country Drought Resilience and Innovation Showcase – a free event designed to empower residents, share cutting-edge ideas and strengthen drought resilience across the region.

Following community consultation on the Castlereagh Countr y Drought Plans, Gilgandra and War r umbungle Shi re Councils – supported by the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund and the N SW G ove r n m e nt – have announced a free event aimed at building resilience, empowering communities and showcasing innovation.

The Castlereagh Countr y Drought Resilience and Innovation Showcase will be held at the Baradine Memorial Hall from 9am on Thursday, 2 0 N ove m b e r 2 0 2 5 .

The event w i l l b r i ng together experts, local stakeholders and agricultural innovators to share practical tools, emerging technologies a n d d i ve r s i f i c a t i o n opportunities to help communities prepare

for future droughts.

The Showcase w i l l b e h o s te d by l o ca l fa r me r and social media influencer Kaitie Nash, known for sharing her ‘First-time Farmer’ experiences with humour and heart. “As the Castlereagh Countr y Drought Resilience Plan moves into the implementation p h a s e, w e’l l b e g i n to see practical, commun it y d r iven projects take shape that will deliver real benefits and help these communities prepare for future challenges.”

War rumbungle Shire Council general m a n a g e r, L i n d s a y Mason said d rought affects more than just farmers.

“Extended dr y periods impact local economies, businesses and social wellbeing.

It’s vital we have tools in place now to diversify and connect our communities.”

Gilgandra Shire Council general manager David Neeves encouraged residents and businesses to attend.

The other side of harvest A farmer’s daughter, Coonabarabran Times journalist, Molly Shannon shares an insight into the key ingredients and supersitions that ensure a successful harvest.

I have often found Harvest™ hard to explain to those who haven’t experienced it.

I won’t lie, there is a certain magic to Harvest™, it can be seen as a beautiful time where all the hard work from the year is paid off, watching as the header and chaser cart methodically lug up and down the paddock, the fully grown crop slowly disappearing, bit by bit, into the mouth of the header.

There is beauty in the dust, the sunsets, the feeling when a paddock has finally been cleared.

But I would be lying if I told you that I love Harvest™.

For all the joys it brings, there’s an underbelly to the ordeal.

A secret heartbeat that, if it weren’t there, would bring the whole operation crumbling down.

I present to you, the family of the farmer.

Growing up, Harvest™ would bring a secret dread to my stomach.

I’d watch Dad leave before the sun rose and not return until the birds started

to wake, the steady hum of machinery the only guideline as to where he was.

Sitting down for dinner, seeing the empty spot at the table and eating in silence, still with the steady hum of the header, wondering where Dad was and how much longer it would take.

There is a very distinct memory I have of getting in trouble when I was little, and having to sit on the front step to wait for him to land home.

There were equal parts fear of Dad, the dark and wondering if I would be left on the step all night long because Dad wouldn’t get back until late at night...I got very close to our old golden labrador, Gertrude.

Harvest™ is a time of endless preparation. I am telling you, if you think you have started preparing early enough, no you haven’t.

There is much that goes into it.

I’d watch Mum slave over a kitchen stove baking, cooking, fretting.

“Do we have enough food?”

“Molly, make a big batch of biscuits, the men will be hungry when they come

in for a cup of tea.”

“Do you think that’s enough chicken drumsticks?”

I will now supply you with a short, yet non-extensive list detailing the types of things you need to be ready for in Harvest™.

1. Food (BIG one – if there’s no food or lollies, or enough fizz in the fridge, you are done for).

2. Machinery (months of preparation in servicing the header, only for the first day you take it out, that one tube which you replaced only two weeks ago has now disintegrated and there is only one spare, valued at $500, and waiting in Dubbo for pick-up by 2.30pm, but it is now 1.30pm) 3. The mower and or whipper snipper (if it breaks during Harvest™, you can kiss goodbye to a beautiful lawn until the 1st of January) 4. ANY home maintenance job (refer to items three and four) 5. Christmas (trust me on this one) As you can see, there is a certain je ne sais quoi to Harvest™. There’s really nothing quite like it.

For all the times I have groaned and moaned about Harvest™ starting, there’s still a part of me, the country kid side, that gets excited.

I grew up jumping from one hay bale to another, running through the stubble of wheat and wincing every time it would slice my leg, but not caring enough to stop.

Climbing in the header with Dad and falling asleep on the floor as he bumped along the paddock.

Sitting in the truck as we drove to Grain Corp in Baradine, the loud engine turning a normal conversation into a shouting match.

Looking longingly at the cakes and food Mum would make, trying to sneak a piece before anyone noticed.

Seeing Dad come home, tired and sore from sitting in the header all day, but happy because farming is what he loves.

And then, when Harvest™ is finally over, there is a collective sigh of relief.

The crazy has stopped and you can go back to normal...then you remember that there will be sowing in a few months!

Harvesting a new future Local farmers in the Warrumbungle Shire have come together to form the Warrumbungle Shire Mixed Producer Farming Group, with the group hoping to collate information on farming practices, research and tap into resources.

by MOLLY SHANNON For close to 20 years, there has been a lack of producer g roups in the region, in part due t o gover nment restructuring of resources such as the Department of Industries (DPI), the millennium drought and a lack of professionals able to run such groups.

H o we v e r, a g r o up of local farmers came together early this year with a goal to reintroduce a wo rk i n g pr o du c e r group.

T heir aim is to collaborate with industry and government departments, as well as recruiting other farmers to talk and discuss onfarm practices and ways they can improve their

own operation.

Wa r r umbu ngle Mixed Farm Producer Group is the brainchild of Bi n naway fa rmer, Jim Larkin, and industry expert, Callen Thompson, from AgStar Projects.

Sensing a gap in the market and a need for farmers to come together, they rallied to bring the initiative to life.

“It's something that Callen has been trying to do for a while,” Mr Larkin said. “ When he was with the Local Land Service he had set up a producer d e m o n s t r at i o n s i t e , which is through the MLA, and he was trying to get a group of local f a r mer s t o g et her t o share ideas and improve what they do.

“We were on the tail

end of that grain and graze thing, so we’d gone to the last session or field day, and a fellow I knew had come up to a group of us just standing around talking and he asked, ‘Oh, what do you guys reckon about this?’

“A nd it was just a simple question about spreading fertiliser and he wanted to know what he’d be better spending his money on and where he should fertilise – and we all threw our thoughts into the ring, “I was driving home f rom that and I was thinking about how good it is when you can get a group of people together and just throw an idea around and they might look at what we’ve said and go, ‘No, none of that suits me’. Or he might look at it and go, ‘Well,

that works for Jim, but it doesn’t really work for me, but there’s a little part of what he said that I can make work’,” Mr Larkin said. “ S o, I ra ng Ca l len about it and said, ‘Mate, what do you reckon? ’ And he said that was what he’d been trying to achieve with the producer demonstration site – and the idea evolved from that.”

While they don’t aim to be exclusive, there is a fee for members to join the group.

M r Larkin said there were two main reasons behind having a member’s fee.

One, to be able to pay Mr Thompson for his ser v ices, and to also ensure that members stay committed to the group.

And while the potential for the group is exciting, establishing guidelines has also been essential.

Of these rules, confidentiality remains the most important and stressed-upon rule.

“One thing we said at the start was that the worst thing that could happen is we’re at the pub and you hear people talking about what someone’s doing on their farm and it’s come from this group,” Mr Thompson said. “ We a r e r e a l ly focused on sha r ing as a group and being rea l ly open, because we know that it doesn’t go any further – and that’s really important

because groups like this need that level of trust between members or else this isn’t going to work.”

While producer groups still exist, often times they are geared towards specific farmers such as a grazier.

The Warrumbungle Mixed Farm Producer Group hopes to appeal to as many farmers as possible, whether they f a r m b ot h c r op a nd livestock, or strictly one or the other.

“One of the unique things about this group is that we’re called a mixed-farming g roup because this is a real mixed-farming area,” Mr Thompson said.

“We’re very location fo c u s e d r at her t h a n c o m m o d it y f o c u s e d , so there’s some sheep producers, there’s beef producers, there’s grain croppers, and there’s a lot of producers that are all of those things.”

T h e g r o u p ’s a i m s to meet up four times a n nua l ly, as wel l as hosting an on-farm field day once a year.

Their first field day is expected to take place in March 2026.

For M r T hompson, these f ield days a nd producer-group meetings prov ide a n excel lent opportunity for farmers to better understand thei r practices a nd farms.

He is hopeful that the group can expand in the future by gaining more members and reaching more fa rms in the Warrumbungle region.

“ We’ve sort of said we’re the Warrumbungle Shire and Warrumbungle region, but we’re pretty f lexible on that point of view,” Mr Thompson said.

“We’d like more people involved, but we’re very clear on how we run as a group, and we’ve got it all written down – which we can supply if anyone’s interested, “One of the things that we’re really focused on is like-minded producers; people who are willing to share, willing to try new things, willing to listen and help and provide guidance to other people within the group.”

Young farmers have also joined the group, hoping to expand their knowledge and learn from industry veterans. “ I just do a lot of listening,” young farmer, Jack Larkin said.

“I try to learn as much as I can from everyone else that's older and done it a lot longer,” young Mr Larkin said.

L ook ing back at how the industry has cha nged over re cent years, Mr Thompson said access to information and resources was more readily available then ever before, but navigating the reliability of that information could be hard.

“The thing that’s really changed is there’s so much more information now than there’s ever been and it’s so readily available – even with t h i n g s l i ke A I now.

Anyone can jump online

and ask an AI bot an agronomic question and they’ll get an answer,” Mr Thompson said.

“But, sometimes, those answers aren’t accurate and sometimes those things aren’t suited to specific areas. So, one of the big things that we need to do as a group is go, okay, well, there’s all this information out there – what’s actually relevant to our group? “ W hat changes can we make on farm that will actually increase productivity, increase susta i nabi l ity – or whatever it is that we’re trying to do? And how can we take what’s out there and and make it work for us? “ S o, I th in k that ’s really what our group’s about.”

To date, the Warrumbungle Mixed Farm Producer Group has successfully held three meetings, with one more set to take place this year.

The group is always looking for more members and encourage other mi xed-fa rmi ng producers to reach out by c ont ac t i ng either Callen Thompson or Jim Larkin. “ This group is very producer driven, there’s a number of people in the group that really pull together and drive this to make it happen and I’m sort of just coming along as a facilitator,” Mr Thompson said. “ It ’s the producers that make this work and that’s priority for us.”

Coona’s agronomic trailblazer Coonabarabran local, Bob Freebairn, is approaching his sixth decade serving the central-west NSW region as an agronomist and consultant, revolutionising the way light soils are farmed and boosting productivity across the state.

by CLAUDIA HEANEY Since moving to Coonabarabran in 1967 to begin his career as a district agronomist, Bob has made a profound impact on cropping and the broader agricultural industry.

Throughout his career, Bob has conducted extensive research, field trials and on-property consultation, growing his expertise and deepening his impact on agriculture in the local area and beyond.

It is his work t r a n s f o r m i n g productivity and health in light soils, particularly in the north-west NSW district, that he said stands out in his career.

“When I started my career, light soils were commonly regarded as second-rate, third-rate – even fourth-rate soils,” Bob said.

“They were acidic, low in natural fertility, and the farmers of that era could not really do much with those soils, so that was my first major challenge.”

It was Bob’s persistence to find a solution that led to the discovery and implementation of better-suited species.

“First up was Serradella, a legume that fixes nitrogen in the soil.

“Following that was the discovery of acidtolerant perennial grasses like consol lovegrass, digit grass and premier digit grass.”

This marked the beginning of a new chapter for NSW farmland, enabling further research on the benefits of legumes, such as serradella and tropical species, on light, acidic soils.

“Once we had plants that could grow well on these soils, that allowed us to do more detailed nutritional studies,” Bob said.

The next stage was to address element lacking in the soil.

“Soil tests tended to indicate what was missing in the soil, mainly being phosphorus, sulphur and nitrogen,” he explained.

“However, legumes like serradella, cow pea and lupins helped address the low nitrogen issue.”

Improvement As a result of introducing these species and the land management that followed, Bob noted an extraordinary improvement in soil health and primary production.

“All of a sudden, you had quite good country!

“In the last 20 years or so, where there’s been a few droughts and dry spells, the lighter country has actually been more productive than the heavy country, particularly for grazing.”

Although more work is required to better understand our soils, Bob said this discovery had transformed lighter soils, making for a better tomorrow.

“The more you know, the more you don’t know,” he said. “ H o w e v e r, w e ’ v e made huge strides as far as productivity.

“Having plants that grow well in light country has a direct impact on improving soil carbon and soil organic matter for organisms, fungi, bacteria and earthworms. “ We h a v e s o r t o f made the big, initial breakthrough.”

As the world’s population continues to grow, Bob said there will be a continual need to increase soil fertility due to our responsibility to feed the world – so it is important to look after our soils for the next generation.

“My approach is, you need your soils to be productive, you need them to be healthy. It’s a resource that we’ll use forever.”

In 2003, Bob was

awarded an Order of Australia Medallion for his service as a n a g ro n o m i s t a n d researcher, particularly in the areas of pasture improvement and agricultural sustainability, and to the community of Coonabarabran.

This achievement highlights Bob’s dedication to not only to the industry itself, but improving soil quality across the state, one property at a time.

To b e a q u a l i t y agronomist, Bob said you must be willing to put in the work and connect with your clients.

“It’s important to work hard and be thorough.

“It is crucial to base your work on current science, not on the opinion of another that

may not be backed by science.

“Having a good rapport with clients is essential.”

For Bob, the highlight of his career has been the impact his research has had on soil productivity, paving the way for enhanced primary production and a more diverse range of enterprises possible on light soils.

“The documentation and appreciation of finding species like serradella and digit grasses is something that has transformed light country like my own property, which consists mostly of light soils, alongside sensible management,” Bob said.

Harvest 2025 With many farmers currently in the thick of

harvest, a mixed season is leading into what Mr Freebairn believes to be a mixed harvest across the north west.

“The season has been pretty variable, depending on where you are,” he said.

“Rainfall has varied significantly across the region, with some areas faring far better than others. Baradine has really missed out on a lot of the rain, whereas Coonamble has had quite a good season.

“Most areas, but not all, have had quite a reasonable summer, autumn and winter, but a dry spring.”

Bob said that from his experience on his property just outside Purlewaugh, it has responded well to the season.

“We have had

quite a good season.

We’re typical of wellmanaged properties.

“If you’re running an unimproved property, you are probably doing it tough at the moment.”

Bob said the harvest results from the northwest region have been better than he anticipated. He added that farmers on heavier soils with good stored water were better able to maintain production leading into harvest.

“Anybody that sowed late or didn’t have good stored water in their soils has felt the effects of that, this season in particular,” he said.

Commodity prices In terms of commodity prices, Bob said livestock is holding strong.

“A significant part at the moment is that

cattle and sheep prices are generally excellent.”

Broad-acre crop prices have also proven to be variable this season.

“Grain prices are low this season. However, canola prices have been good,” Bob said.

“If you’ve got a good yield, you’ll get by. If you’ve got a low yield, it’s going to be a tougher year.

“That’s just a world market fluctuation.”

Generally, both cattle and sheep prices have been excellent, boosting profitability throughout the season.

Looking ahead, Bob said it’s hard to predict what’s next, but farmers were optimistic.

“It is anybody’s guess.

I think most farmers are reasonably confident.”

Take care on the road this harvest NSW Farmers is urging motorists to take care around agricultural vehicles as the state prepares for this year’s grain and hay harvest – and calling for serious investment to make regional roads safer for all drivers.

Large farm machinery will be a common sight on country roads over the coming weeks, and NSW Farmers Grains Committee chair ,Justin Everitt said it was vital road users exercised caution when navigating around these vehicles.

“Tractors, headers, augers and more will soon be on our roads as many farmers gear up to get their grain and hay out of the paddock and into market,” Mr Everitt said.

“Tailgating or unpredictable overtaking is particularly dangerous around these heavy vehicles, so be ready to look out, slow down and take care on the road – and farmers will

make sure they can shift out of your way as soon as it’s safe.

“This machinery might be a little slow moving, but the most important thing is that we all get home safely at the end of each day.”

As the busy harvest season approached, Mr Everitt said it was also important for farmers to consider how they could prepare to keep themselves and their workforce safe.

“Spring is already here and summer isn’t far away, so it’s an extremely busy time for growers, and the combination of long days, hot weather, fatigue and heavy machinery can increase the risks on-farm,” he said.

“Straightforward plans and processes around servicing machinery, managing traffic, inducting workers, preventing fatigue and preparing for emergencies can make all the difference in ensuring the 2025 harvest

is safe, productive and successful.”

At the same time, NS W Fa rmers is calling for greater attention to the condition of reg ion a l r oad s , wa r n i ng th at p o or infrastructure is contributing to a rising regional road toll.

Studies have shown farm workers are four times more likely to die on the nation’s roads than any other driver, with NSW’s local roads facing a $3.4 billion backlog in repairs.

“Drivers have been forced to navigate dangerous potholes, uneven surfaces and other serious hazards on our roads for far too long, and we simply can’t continue with roads like this,” NSW Farmers Business Economics and Trade Committee chair, John Lowe said.

“Serious and sustainable funding to fix our local roads, our truck rest stops, our overtaking lanes and our bridges is money

well spent, because it could save lives.”

Mr Lowe said efficient and connected rail networks were also urgently needed to reduce the pressure trucks were placing on the state’s roads, with better driver education and expanded mobile coverage also key to improving road safety.

“Trucks are only adding to the wear and tear on our roads. Rail lines, in the right place, in the right condition, will really take the heat off,” he said.

“Drivers also need to have the skills to drive to the conditions, and the ability to call for help when they need to, no matter where they are in the state.

“We’ve got a long road ahead to improve our road safety – but it’s only by addressing the root causes of the problem that we can keep our regional communities safe.”

WARRUMBUNGLE COMMUNITY SERVICES EXPO: 5 NOVEMBER 2025 The annual Community Services Expo, hosted by Warrumbungle Community Care, brought together a wide range of service providers at the Coonabarabran Town Hall on Wednesday, 6 November. The event showcased everything from aged care, healthcare and childcare to government and emergency services, giving residents the opportunity to learn more about the support and resources available in their community. Designed to boost awareness and connection, the Expo continues to play an important role in linking locals with vital services.

Behind-the-scenes at TAFE NSW TAFE NSW continues to be a vital part of the education landscape. The Coonabarabran Times spoke with Coonabarabran Campus staff member, Kyle Moppett, and student, Nicole Mohr, to learn more about their experiences, what they love about studying locally and how TAFE NSW is helping them reach their goals.

Nicole Mohr

Business administration student What are you studying at TAFE NSW? I’m currently studying for a Certificate III in Business Administration. I will then continue on to study Community Services. I wanted to update my skills with computer knowledge.

I’ve finished Cert 3 Business Administration in June and am working on Community Services currently.

What inspired you to start studying at TAFE NSW? Having two teenagers and a toddler at home I needed to engage in a course that would fit in with my family life. I come from a nursing and hospitality background which just didn’t suit my lifestyle anymore.

What’s it been like returning to study?

Being a mature-aged student has allowed me to realise that you are never too old to learn a new skill.

Have you found TAFE NSW Coonabarabran campus to be a welcoming place to study?

The TAFE at Coona has wonderful staff who cater to all your needs.

How did you first connect with Kylie Moppett – how has that support made a difference to you and your studies?

Kylie Moppett is the student support officer and no question is too hard. Kylie is very professional and emotionally supportive. Kylie is a great help when needing assistance.

Was there something about TAFE NSW that felt like a better fit for you than an online university course or similar?

I needed a campus that I could study faceto-face and Coona TAFE has so much to offer.

I study three days per week and run the local Food Pantry on Thursdays. It was a juggle at the start of my course, but now I’ve found balance.

It’s close to my home, so not having to travel is a bonus.

What would you say to other people considering a TAFE NSW course?

My suggestion to everyone would be to visit Coonabarabran TAFE and find out what courses they have and obtain some new skills.

Education support officer What is your role with TAFE NSW entail?

As an education support officer (ESO) at TAFE NSW Coonabarabran, my role is dedicated to supporting students throughout their learning pathway, whether they are engaging in virtual, connected, online, or face-to-face classes.

I work collaboratively with teaching sections and TAFE NSW support services to ensure students have the guidance, resources and assistance they need to succeed. This includes: Technology and Learning Support, Academic Assistance, On site and Virtual Accessibility, Community and Engagement.

B e i n g b a s e d a t t h e l o c a l TA F E N S W Coonabarabran allows me to assist students across all courses, making education more accessible and ensuring that every learner has the support they need to thrive.

What is most rewarding about your job?

It’s a privilege to be a part of a student’s learning journey. From the first day when navigating the learning process, to growing and developing skills and then graduation.

How did you first connect with Nicole Mohr at the Coonabarabran TAFE NSW campus?

Nicole started in term one this year and enrolled in a Certificate III in Business. This course runs three days a week over two terms. Nicole’s dedication during her course has ensured a successful graduation!

What kinds of support do you offer students?

We assist students to log into and use technology and systems such as Microsoft Teams, Office, Outlook and TAFE online-learning platforms

including Student Hub. We also help with downloading and uploading learning and assessment resources, printing and scanning, role plays and provide general student support such as achieving learning milestones through organisational strategies and time management. The best thing about my role is that I am based at TAFE NSW Coonabarabran and can support all students regardless of what they’re enrolled in; this is a great benefit to the students who participate in virtual classes using Microsoft teams or other online options where the teacher may not be physically located on site.

Can you share a memorable moment or success story you’ve witnessed at TAFE NSW Coonabarabran?

Our students juggle work, personal commitments and study, overcoming challenges to achieve their goals. Completing a course is more than just an academic milestone – it’s the gateway to new opportunities, personal growth and career advancement. One of the most rewarding aspects of our campus is seeing students transition from learning into meaningful employment.

Many graduates have successfully secured roles in their chosen fields right here in the local community, contributing to regional industries and strengthening our workforce. Whether it’s an apprentice landing their first job, a careerchanger finding their passion, or a student achieving a long-held dream – every success story reflects the support, determination, and community spirit that make TAFE NSW Coonabarabran so special.

The students are supportive of each other, and we do have people on the ground to help.

With local education support readily available on site, students benefit from both structured guidance and a welcoming atmosphere, making TAFE NSW Coonabarabran a standout destination for accessible, high-quality education in the region.

How would you describe the environment at Coonabarabran TAFE NSW campus?

T h e l o o k a n d f e e l o f t h e TA F E N S W Coonabarabran Connected Learning Centre is modern, clean and professional. This leads out into car parking and an amenities block surrounded by trees, outdoor seating and buildings which house an automotive workshop, student services and individual study rooms with large screens and desktops.

Each student has access to a laptop for the duration of their course when attending the campus. The thoughtfully designed layout accommodates diverse study modes, offering a range of environments tailored to different learning styles. Whether students prefer quiet individual study spaces, group collaboration areas, or interactive classrooms, they have access to settings that enhance their learning experience.

How do you see TAFE’s role evolving in the future, particularly in regional communities like ours?

TAFE NSW plays a pivotal role in bridging the educational divide for regional communities,

evolving into dynamic technology hubs that empower students with access to essential digital infrastructure. Our campuses provide high-speed Wi-Fi, printer/scanner facilities, laptops and large screens designed for seamless virtual learning via Microsoft Teams. By offering virtual classes, students in regional areas can access a broader range of courses without the barriers of distance. This model ensures equitable learning opportunities, fostering skill development and career pathways that directly contribute to local industries and economies. As technology continues to advance, TAFE NSW remains committed to innovation, collaboration, and accessibility – ensuring regional students are equipped for the future, no matter where they are.

What’s one thing you wish more people understood about TAFE NSW and the opportunities it offers?

Online teaching can be just as fun as face to face and students are well-supported through my role. Don’t let online learning be a barrier to learning!

If someone was thinking about starting a course at TAFE NSW, what advice would you give them?

Drop in and have a chat or book a time to have a look around the campus. TAFE NSW Coonabarabran also has student administration on site in Block A who can guide you on courses and enrolments. All staff are invested in assisting you to select the right course to achieve your goals.

Closing soon: nominations for Australia Day awards Residents across the Warrumbungle Shire are being encouraged to celebrate their local heroes, with nominations for the 2026 Warrumbungle Shire Council/ NSW Citizen of the Year Awards closing on Monday, 17 November.

Coordinated by Warrumbungle Shire Council in partnership with the NSW Local Citizen of the Year Awards, these honours recognise individuals who have made outstanding contributions to their communities throughout the Shire.

At the same time, many town committees have also opened nominations for their own local town Australia Day Awards. These local awards are run independently by community groups in each township and are separate from the Shire-wide program. In Coonabarabran, local Australia Day Award nominations will open next week.

M a y o r, C r Ka t h r y n R i n d f l e i s h s a i d t h e awards provided an impor tant oppor tunity to acknowledge people who made a real difference.

“This is a great chance to celebrate the people who make a real difference in our towns and across the Shire,” Cr Rindfleish said.

“Whether it’s a quiet achiever, a ti reless volunteer, or someone who has gone above and beyond for their community, now is the time to give them the recognition they deserve.”

The Shire-wide awards are run in partnership with the NSW Local Citizen of the Year Awards.

Nominations opened in September and will close at 4.30pm on Monday, 17 November 2025. Late applications will not be accepted.

Nominations can be submitted online via the Warrumbungle Shire Council website under the ‘Have Your Say’ tab, or through Council’s Facebook page. Paper nomination forms are also available at Council’s Coonabarabran and Coolah administration offices.

Each township within the Warrumbungle Shire also runs its own community-led awards’ program, coordinated by local volunteers. These awards recognise residents and groups who contribute to their towns through hard work, community spirit, and dedication.

Roy Butler releases results of National Parks survey Overwhelming discontent with the management of National Parks in western NSW has been revealed through a survey released by Member for Barwon, Roy Butler. Locals shared the reasons why they are unhappy with National Parks while also identifying possible solutions for the future.

M r Butler released the sur vey following several large purchases of fo r me r pasto ral stations by the National Parks estate, receiving 242 responses.

“My sur vey was designed to clarify the most important issues a cco rd i n g to t h o s e who are best placed to understand what’s working and what isn’t

The survey returned results that closely align w it h t h e v i ew p o i nt s of local pastoralists, acco rding to Sam

“Pu rchasing land at inflated pr ices to p rote ct l a n d s ca p es

that have happi l y coexisted with pastoralism since t h e 18 6 0 s a n d n o t following th rough w ith i nves tment i n pest control and tour ist infrastr ucture is unacceptable. This approach should be recon s i de red by the government,” Mr Beven said.

T h e s u r v e y revealed 95 per cent of respondents were not happy with h ow N at i o n a l Pa r k s are managed in w e s t e r n N S W, w i t h just one in five seeing e co n o m i c b e n ef i t s , and slightly more seeing environmental

benefits.

Re s p o n d e nt s s a i d their biggest concerns about turning pastoral stations into National Parks were: 1. Losing a pastoral business that helps the local economy; 2. H igh pu rchase pr ices stopping new farmers; and 3. Feral animals getting out of control.

Respondents were less concerned about poor fencing or the loss of access to roads or fire trails.

A majority suppor t allowing conservation hunting in wester n National Pa r k s to control feral animals,

with just one in four suppor ting better fencing.

When a s ked w hat would make them more supportive of Western National Parks, more tha n fou r i n 10 sa i d s to p p i n g p u rch a s es above market value, with another 2 2 % suppor ting clearer r u l es fo r co nve r t i n g p a s to ra l s tat i o n s to parks.

“I thank respondents for taking the time to complete the survey,” Mr Butler said.”

“I will use these results to g u i d e my ef fo r t s at improving the way National Parks operate in western NSW.”

‘Magical Bonds: Dogs, Horses and Us’ opens at SPACE Gallery SPACE Gallery in Coonabarabran hosted the official opening of ‘Magical Bonds: Dogs, Horses and Us’, a new exhibition by local artists Meg Leathart and Ange Bunner. K a r e n’s granddaughter, Abby, also assisted throughout the day.

Our students listened attentively as Karen read the story ‘Silly Birds’,

by Gregg Dreise, and participated in a variety of creative crafts including weaving, making clap

sticks, decorating bandanas and creating keychain pendants. As part of the celebrations, students were a lso fortunate to try some delicious Johnny Cakes and savoury sausages.

We thank Karen and Abby sincerely for their support in making this day such a memorable and enriching experience for our students.

On Friday, 31 October, the R obertson Street P reschool ( Monkey Room) celebrated Ha l loween w ith face painting from our trainee educator, Ryllie, who used her artistic abilities to bring a touch of magic to the day. The children loved the opportunity t o cho o s e t hei r ow n

designs, allowing them to express their individual preferences and creativity. There were lots of superhero requests as well as butterflies, cats, bats, snakes and vampire designs. It was a day filled with smiles as the children proudly showed off their unique faces.

As the audience of Year 3-5 students listens intently, they are encouraged to look for approachable, empathetic and supportive peers who act as role models, maintain discipline and assist staff with school operations and events. Good luck to all students hoping to take on a leadership role!

This week also marks the final Early Birds session. We congratulated our incoming Kindergarten students at a small ceremony, where they met their teachers for next year. Mrs Mel Evans and Ms Sally Deshon are both excited and looking forward to their roles as

Kindergarten teachers in 2026.

We all heartily congratulate Will Weatherall on his outstanding success in the NSW Premier’s Spelling Challenge, where he placed in the top 16 spellers in the state.

The challenging word that brought him undone was impertinence – but we are incredibly proud of Will and his amazing achievement.

A huge congratulations to our Stars of the Week and to Kenzie Kelleher, who also received a special certificate and a book for reaching 100 nights of home reading.

No-one was more excited about the awards than Charlie Johnston, who jumped and clapped all the way to get the certificate. We love your enthusiasm Charlie.

Call for artists to exhibit in Parliament A r t pl ay s s uc h a n impor tant role in promoting the best of Barwon and shows that there is more artistic ta lent out west than some people might rea l ise. I am a lways pleased to showcase the a r t work s by B a r won a r t i st s i n my of f ic e , a nd whe ne v e r o t he r Members of Parliament visit the electorate, they are impressed by the art galleries and public artworks in unexpected places.

It happens that the NSW Pa rliament has a g reat publ ic spac e wher e a r t c a n b e d i s pl ay e d . W h e n people wa l k th rough t he Fou nt a i n C ou r t , they will see artworks from around the state on display. These are ex h ibit ion s of work s by a r t orga n isations in various electorates, hosted by the lo ca l Member of Parliament.

So, I am putting out the call to all of the art commu n ities, g roups and organisations across Barwon to show us what you’ve got. The

a r t work s mu s t h ave significance to Barwon or NSW, and they must be hosted by a Member of Parliament, but there is no fee to exhibit in this amazing space.

Cobar mine tragedy T he c om mu n it y o f Cobar is still grieving the loss of two miners, Holly Clarke and Ambrose McMullen, in the recent explosion at the Endeavour Mine.

My condolences to the Cobar community, who will be feeling this loss wel l beyond just the families and friends of those lost. .

My thoughts a re a lso w ith M acken z ie Stirling, who was injured in the explosion.

Her family have set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for her medical and living expenses on her road to recovery.

We have been conducting an inquiry into inter ventions to reduce road trauma in regional NSW caused by speeding, fatig ue, drink and drug-affected driving.

T he committee is looking into: • The research and data collected on the factors, characteristics, a nd demog raph ics of road crashes specific to regional NSW; • E f fe c t ivene s s o f current strategies and prog rams t o reduce speeding, fatigue, drink a nd d r ug d r iv i ng i n regional NSW; • Proposed measures to reduce road trauma in regional NSW; • I mplement at ion o f r e l e v a n t recommendations from the 2023 Performance A ud it R ep or t o f t he Auditor-General, entitled ‘ R eg ional R o ad S a fe t y ’, d at e d 3 0 November 2 023; and any other related matters.

The timing of this inquiry has

coincided w ith the Federal Government’s R eg u lat or y I mpact A nalysis ( R I A) to reduce the open road default speed limit from 100km/h.

For m a ny of u s i n Ba r won who have t o t r av e l hu n d r e d s , sometimes thousands of kilometres along open roads, this proposal will only extend our time on the road.

I do not agree with this approach. Rather than lowering the speed limit, we need better and safer roads.

Lowering speed limits because the roads need work is a cop out.

The statistics include Wollongong and Newcastle as regional a r e a s , s o t hey don’t accurately ref lect the lower i nc ident r at e s we s e e on ou r r u r a l and remote roads, especia l ly u nsea led roads. It will be interesting to see what comes of this inquiry.

I will be reporting on the findings when the committee releases its report.

Grandad Roy On a personal note, I am pleased to report that I recently got up to Port Macquarie to see my new (my first) grandson. Both mother and baby are doing well.

I was in Bougainville when Eli was born, so it was good to finally see him in person and congratulate the new parents.

An active low-pressure trough entered Bass Strait just before last weekend, producing a moderate to heavy rainfall in southern district of Victoria and not much rainfall further north into the Riverina.

It has been notably wa r m e r t h a n n o r m a l from August to October at Townsville and also v e r y d r y, w i t h o n l y 4 mms rainfal l af ter th e wet tes t J a n ua r y to -Apr il per iod in 155 years of records. At the beginning of October the temperature reached 36.4 degrees, the hottest since 36.5 in 2003.

So fa r th i s month, the mean-maximum temperature up to 10 N ovem be r wa s 3 3. 3 deg rees – mo re than t wo deg rees above normal – and this looks set to break the record warmest November of 1971.

S e a - s u r f a c e te m pe rat u res of f th e coast of Q ueens land have been notab ly higher than normal since the end of 2 0 24. T h i s is an alarming sign for December in Townsville.

On 24 December1971 cyclone Althea did much damage to Townsville.

Magpies wrap up the season in style The Baradine Magpies Rugby League Football Club wrapped up its 2025 season in style with a huge end-of-season presentation night on Saturday, 25 October. McWhirter swings all the way to state Coonabarabran golfer, Jane McWhirter, has earned a place in the Golf NSW Gold Medal State Playoffs after taking out the regional final at Quirindi Golf Club on Monday, 27 October.

Jane qualified for t h e re g i o n a l eve nt af ter reco rding the best three out of six monthly medal results at Co o n a b a ra b ra n Golf Club.

The regional f inal b rought together al l the Gold Medal winners from across the north west, with Jane claiming the Division 1 (handicaps 0 –18) title.

“It was a wild windy day at Quirindi that day – hence the hair!”

Jane said.

“The score wasn’t g re at, w i t h a n et 78, but was best of the worst due to the weather that day.

“I’m pretty happy,

as it’s a privilege to represent Coona club at this state golf event in Division 1.”

The Golf NSW Gold Medal Playoffs will be held on 10 December at Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club in Sydney, a world-class course w h e r e t h e s t a t e’ s top club golfers will compete.

Coonabarabran was also represented at the regional final by Kat Christoff in Division 2 and Lou Dowsett in D ivision 3, w ith Lou finishing second in her division.

The Country Universities Centre North West recently celebrated the graduating class of 2025, with a presentation night held at The Exchange in Narrabri on Thursday, November 6. Students were joined by their families, friends, CUC staff and board members as well as contributing supporters and sponsors such as Narrabri Shire Council, Whitehaven and Santos.

The wonderful CUC team filled the room with bags of goodies for the graduates, delicious catering and of course a glass of bubbles at entry.

Government announces $23 million to tackle youth crime The NSW Government has announced $23 million in targeted funding to address youth crime and improve community safety across regional NSW. The new investment focuses on two key priorities: breaking the cycle of reoffending among young people on bail and preventing atrisk youth from entering the justice system in the first place.

It bolsters support in high-priority regional communities for bail supervision, intensive case management, and early intervention and diversion.

Since April 2024, the NSW Government has rolled out targeted strategies like NSW Police Operation Soteria, tougher bail laws, and pilot interventions in Moree, Riverina and Western Sydney.

While the government said there is still work to do, it highlighted encouraging signs such as the June 2025 BOCSAR quarterly update on NSW Recorded Crime Statistics which showed that in the two years to June 2025, young people proceeded against to court declined significantly by 12.3 per cent in regional NSW. Despite progress, regional communities in NSW still face higher crime rates than cities. Moree, Tamworth and Kempsey in particular continue to experience higher than average rates of youth crime, and those towns receive targeted funding in this package.

The funding package includes: $12 million to continue placebased responses in Moree and expand responses in Tamworth and Kempsey The NSW Government will work beside the local communities to identify local services and mechanisms that help young people engaging, or at risk of engaging, in crime. The funding will enable local leaders and service providers to co-design prevention and diversion programs that work for their communities such as youth hubs, after-hours activities, intensive family supports, intervention programs and alternative education pathways.

This will provide a vital intervention point for the most vulnerable young offenders, offering residential supervision and programs delivered by local partnerships.These towns have strong communities and appetite to

support their young people and tackle youth crime – the placebased NSW Government funding will look to capitalise on this. $6.3 million to provide intensive bail supervision and support for young people The NSW Government will invest $6.3 million to go towards intensive bail supervision and support, including: Five caseworkers – continuation of one based in Moree, and an additional two based in Tamworth and two in Kempsey to support young people on bail to prevent persistent offending and better understand their legal orders. More regular check-ins with young people on bail, helping young kids comply with their bail conditions and connect them to positive supports to reduce the risk of them falling back into the same situations and patterns of behaviour. Completion of the Moree Bail Accommodation Service— a safe, supervised facility to remove vulnerable young people from high-risk situations and provide structured programs and guidance. A site for the Bail Accommodation Program in Moree has been secured, and Youth Justice is due to take possession next month. Increased bail support and after-hours services in are available in Moree while this work continues. $5 million for a new Community Safety Investment Fund A further $5 million will establish a new Community Safety Investment Fund, open to community and non-government organisations across NSW. The fund will back innovative and potentially scalable local initiatives that prevent or respond to youth

offending, strengthen families, and build safer, more cohesive communities. The fund recognises many communities need support, particularly in regional areas. This fund is open to organisations across NSW and will prioritise applications targeting areas with the highest demonstrated needs and service gaps.

The NSW government highlighted a range of measures already adopted to address youth crime including: tougher bail laws for repeat offenders; a ‘post and boast’ offence targeting online glorification of crime; $13.4 million for Moree’s targeted response; $5.5 million for youth diversion and violence reduction programs; paid police recruits to boost frontline numbers; stronger knife laws under Jack’s Law; and the release of the Doli Incapax review to guide future reform.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said: “This package is about giving local people the tools they need to turn things around for their young people. These are complex issues that won’t be solved overnight, but we are in this for the long haul. What we don’t want to see is young people wrapped up in the justice system again and again, which is why this package is a balance of intervention, prevention and wrap around support measures.”

We know we can’t arrest our way out of this which is why the Government is working to help break the cycle by implementing targeted diversionary programs and addressing the root drivers of this offending. I’ve visited regional towns right across NSW and the message is clear everyone wants to feel safe in their community and for kids to have the best possible chance at a good life and the Minns Labor Government will continue to work hard to deliver exactly that.”

NSW Minister for Youth Justice Jihad Dib said: “We have said before that serious offending needs to have consequences, but this government also wants to support young people to fulfil their potential - this means supporting their

families and communities as well, often at a local level. This funding package reflects how we are working to help young people not to commit a crime in the first place, by funding locally based programs co-developed with local people, that can make a real difference by offering viable alternative pathways within communities.”

NSW Attorney General Michael Daley said: “The NSW Government is investing in measures to reduce crime and the drivers of

crime. We have already undertaken significant legislative reform to help keep our communities safe.

“This includes targeting ‘post and boast’ offenders, strengthening knife laws, and raising the bail threshold for young people accused of repeat car theft and break and enter offences. But we know there is more to do, which is why we’re continuing to consider a review of doli incapax which presumes children under 14 cannot be held criminally responsible.”

Grow the arts in Moree this harvest

In an inspiring fundraising campaign and with harvest in full swing, Bank Art Museum Moree (BAMM) is asking farmers to donate a tonne of grain – or trailer load – to support the gallery to continue to deliver arts and cultural programs in Moree.

As well as elevate the profile of the region.

Museum director Rosie Dennis said ‘a trailer load today helps BAMM inspire tomorrow’.

“Growers can simply donate a portion of their grain load to BAMM using the National Grower Registration system, and BAMM will then sell the donated grain,” Ms Dennis said.

Donations can be made at grain receival weighbridges across north-western NSW, with GrainCorp, a strong supporter of BAMM through the Garage Barbershop exhibition.

Thursday October 30 marked a milestone moment for BAMM, with the opening of two

powerful photographic exhibitions and the launch of the new community fundraising campaign.

More than 100 people gathered to celebrate the arrival of the National Gallery of Australia’s touring exhibition Nan Goldin: ‘The ballad of sexual dependency, alongside Garage Barbershop — a hyper-local portrait series capturing the spirit and stories of Moree.

Ms Dennis said it was fantastic to see BAMM buzzing with both new and familiar faces for these two world-class exhibitions.

The evening also marked the official launch of BAMM’s ‘Grow the Arts in Moree with Your Harvest’ donation campaign, which has already seen generous contributions from local farmers supporting the growth of arts and culture across the region.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the National Gallery of Australia for the first time and grateful to the NSW Premier’s Department and GrainCorp for helping bring these extraordinary projects to Moree,” Ms Dennis said.

The exhibitions were officially opened by Anne O’Hehir, Curator of Photography at the National Gallery of Australia and Charles Lomu, lead artist and mentor behind Garage Barbershop.

until mid-December.

Decades-long in the making, ‘The ballad’ offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of Goldin’s community and the post-punk, creative, queer scene of the Bowery district of New York in the late 1970s. Detailing highly personal narratives and relationships with tremendous emotional power, Goldin refers to the work as her ‘public diary’, with overarching themes of love and empathy, and the tension between autonomy and interdependence in relationships.

‘Nan Goldin: The ballad of sexual dependency’ is a National Gallery Touring Exhibition presented as part of the Bowness Family Foundation Photography Touring Program and is on exhibition at BAMM until 13 December.

Garage Barbershop is an exhibition of photographs by award-winning Australian photographer, Joshua Morris, who documented the Garage Barbershop program at BAMM earlier in the year.

Featuring local youth as they learn practical barbering skills at a pivotal time in their lives, the photographs thoughtfully capture candid moments and invite us to witness a meaningful exchange of culture and storytelling – where art meets everyday life.

Garage Barbershop is on exhibition at BAMM until January 24, 2026.

Warm reception for market day on the Liverpool Plains

Call for national monitor to prevent food freeze Farm leaders have warned Australia’s fuel insecurity could trigger a nationwide freeze in food deliveries to supermarkets and global consumers within days in the event of an international emergency.

The warning comes as the state’s peak farm body launches a call for a new national program to monitor stocks of key agricultural inputs such as fuel to ensure food security amid continuing international trade turmoil.

With Australia carrying just 22 days of diesel reserves onshore, NSW Farmers interim CEO Mike Guerin said a serious program to monitor fuel stocks was nothing short of critical.

“Our fuel insecurity is the leak in the tank that could drain our nation of vital food supplies and export markets in just days,” Mr Guerin said.

“One iceberg sank the Titanic, but a thousand things could stop our oil tankers from reaching Australian shores.

“And no fuel means no farm machinery, no tractors, no trucks – and that means no food on shelves, no food in shops, and no food leaving our shores.”

The Liverpool Plains was buzzing with new market stalls returning to Breeza for the first time in years.

Visitors from near and far stopped by to check out the gifts, products and produce for the sale.

About a dozen market stallholders attended, exhibiting their wares in both indoor and outdoor settings.

Held at Breeza Community Hall, located between Quirindi and Gunnedah, the event also hosted afternoon bingo for guests.

The market day was organised

by Rick and Jo Rose on behalf of Breeza Progress Association who started the event to help raise funds for men’s mental health in the district.

Bev Watters, who has been assisting the progress association with its activities, said about 50 people attend the monthly bingo sessions.

Such is the event’s popularity, bingo players from Gunnedah, Quirindi, Werris Creek and Tamworth attend the Breeza games.

The bingo sessions also serve as a fundraiser for the progress association.

Bev has been living in Gunnedah since June after moving from Grafton earlier in the year.

She said the Breeza bingo events have been quite a drawcard for the village.

Also attending the markets were stallholders from Quirindi, Dave and Benita Budd.

“The program should also be working actively to prevent shortages of these inputs, and have plans in place to relieve shortages, not if, but when, they occur.

“This isn’t about triggering panic buying but about preventing a national standstill in food supplies – and with 27 million hungry mouths to feed just in Australia, we just can’t keep risking it until the system fails.”

“We’re more into little places than big places,” Dave said.

Kate Yonge was travelling to Gunnedah with her dachshund Frankie when she decided to stop by the markets.

“It’s nice to see people coming out for it,” Kate said.

She was also impressed by the locally-made produce and gifts for sale at the markets.

William Timmins from Gunnedah was selling handcrafted wood pieces at Breeza. He is a regular on the market circuit in Gunnedah and had a few sales already by mid-morning.

“Most people coming through the gate have a look,” he said.

Fellow stallholder Ariya Darnell was selling a colourful range of artwork on various mediums.

From emu and ostrich eggs to bookmarks and canvas, there was something to suit every taste and budget.

The Spring Ridge resident said her small business concept has grown exponentially from humble beginnings just five years ago.

“I started with just a piece of cardboard and now I have a caravan,” Ariya said of her new art workshop.

Ariya was travelling with her dad and also planned to host a stall at Nundle markets later that afternoon.

Western Local Land Services is urging landholders in the state’s Far West to consider feral pig strength meat baits in a bid to mitigate the impacts of the destructive pest animal.

Feral pig strength meat baits are only available in the Western Local Land Services region, with the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) issuing a permit for its use under strict conditions.

The issuing of the permit by the APVMA came following a research trial that found there was little to no adverse outcomes when using feral pig strength meat baits.

“Feral pig strength meat baits are a proven and effective control tool for landholders.

“Feral pig strength meat baits should be considered as one of several options for controlling feral pigs, along with grain baiting and poisoning, shooting and trapping.”

Done and dusted! HSC exams complete for class of 2025 The 2025 HSC exams officially ended on Friday for more than 1500 Year 12 students throughout the New England North West region.

The region, which stretches from Tenterfield to Gunnedah, featured 1518 students studying one or more HSC subjects this year.

Across the state, nearly 75,000 HSC students sat more than 400,000 exam sessions in 123 dif-

ferent subjects, running across more than 750 exam locations.

This year’s exams included the assessment of new syllabuses in Geography, Software Engineering, and Computing – with the latter two examined online for the first time.

Thousands of dedicated teachers, principals, and support staff have been working behind the scenes during the HSC, ensuring exams run smoothly and deliver a

fair outcome for students.

Marking is well underway, with more than 6500 markers assessing responses from more than 1.2 million exam papers. Students will receive their HSC results and ATAR on Thursday, December 18.

Acting Minister for Education and Early Learning Courtney Houssos said: "On behalf of the entire NSW Government I want to congratulate the Class of 2025 on reaching this milestone.

"Exams are now behind you, and you can look with confidence to the future knowing you have put your best foot forward.

"Thank you to everyone who has supported our students in the lead up to and during exams – parents, families, teachers, and school staff who have been there every step of the way.”

Milli Moncrieff’s story: From harvest casual to site manager

At just 22 years old, Milli Moncrieff is managing GrainCorp’s receival site at Walgett this harvest as acting site manager, leading a team of 13 permanent employees and around 80 harvest workers. It’s a busy and exciting time in agriculture, with winter crop harvest activities well underway.

Across the district, it’s a staggered finish line — harvest is still in full swing in some areas, while others have wrapped up, and many are racing to fill their bins with glorious golden grains as patchy weather lingers.

Recently, to mark Rural Women’s Day, North West Magazine journalist Ali Smith was invited to conduct a Question-and-Answer session with Milli Moncrieff for the magazine’s sister publication the Wee Waa News.

At just 22 years old, Milli is managing GrainCorp’s receival site at Walgett this harvest as acting site manager, leading a team of 13 permanent employees and around 80 harvest workers. Milli said she’d like to encourage the next generation of rural women to step outside their comfort zones.

Q. What are the best parts of working in agriculture? And why were you attracted to the ag sector?

A. I grew up on a dairy farm, so I’ve always been around ag and loved it ever since I can remember. In my job now, I get to work both inside and outside which suits me perfectly – an office job is just not for me. I love being able to get a bit of sun on my skin.

Q. What’s your role at GrainCorp and why did you want to take on this role?

A. I’m currently the acting site manager at our Walgett receival site. This involves looking after a team of 13 permanent employees and around 80 harvest

workers, as well as the day to day running of the site. I wanted to take on this role because it was a chance for me to explore a new place away from home, but it was also a chance for me to build my career. It’s been great to be able to step up to the acting site manager role and give something different a go.

Q. Rural Women’s Day is celebrated every year on October 15 to honour the vital role rural women play in sustaining our communities, economies, and more - who are some rural women (famous or close to home) you look up to or admire?

A. Honestly it changes every day – especially now with social media, I’m seeing so many more women in ag every day that I admire and look up to. One that remains the same is definitely my mum – she was the first woman I knew who worked in agriculture and she’s an amazing woman. I also admire the wives of farmers that I know, while they may not be in the header, they’re definitely the backbone of the operation and I respect that.

Q. There is something pretty special about a rural woman – tell me about why you think they’re worth celebrating?

A. Honestly, I think working in ag takes a lot of grit. Agriculture is still a male dominated industry, but we’re carving our way as we go.

I see change every year – I was the only girl at my last site in Victoria, but there’s lots of women working at sites up in NSW, so it’s awesome to be able to see and experience the change in my lifetime. I think rural women have guts, and that’s worth celebrating.

Q. Not all rural women work in agriculture; they take on a variety of roles and professions - but they all live a rural/country lifestyle - what do you love about living a rural life and being part of a rural community?

A. Maybe this isn’t a surprise for someone my age, but I love the social life. Even though people may think that it’s isolated, in general people are out here because of their work, so I find it leads to a really tight-knit and genuine community. We all have a common ground and so it’s easy to make genuine connections.

Q. What’s the best part of your day or the best kind of day as a rural woman?

A. At the moment I’m really loving my work. We’re coming into the busiest part of the year and its high spirits coming into harvest. I love all the phone calls I’m getting from growers and all the new people I’m meeting. Breaking down gender barriers isn’t a new topic do you think agriculture is a good industry for women to work in?

Q. Would you encourage other women to work in ag?

One hundred per cent I think agriculture is a good industry for women to work in, and I actively encourage other women to consider the industry. For me, I’ve found having determination, a good work ethic and a bit of confidence – my gender doesn’t matter.

I hope to inspire young women and show that you don’t need to have it all figured out – you can jump in headfirst, just be willing to learn!

Q. It’s harvest time - how are you feeling? How is the community feeling?

There’s always a bit of nerves coming into harvest! I have excited butterflies – I’m really looking forward to what’s to come but I know there’s a lot of work between now and the end of harvest. I can’t wait to meet the harvest crew this year and all the new faces the season brings. I’ve had positive feedback about last year’s harvest, so I’m looking to keep up the standard this year. So far everyone has been really welcoming, so I’m grateful for that.

More about Milli’s story: From harvest casual to site manager: When it comes to life on the land, women like Milli Moncrieff prove that leadership knows no gender, said GrainCorp when marking Rural Women’s Day on October 15. At just 22 years old, Milli is managing GrainCorp’s receival site at Walgett this harvest.

Hailing from Echuca, Victoria, Milli grew up on a dairy farm, shadowing her dad and getting involved in as much of the dayto-day operations as school would allow. After finishing school, she traded central Victoria for the red centre, spending a year working on a family-run cattle station north of Alice Springs. Her first taste of GrainCorp came in 2022 as a Grain Handler at Elmore, Victoria.

If you ask Milli, where she is now is a far cry from her first harvest experience. Back then, I didn’t even know the difference between barley and wheat,” she laughs. “But I was encouraged to get outside of my comfort zone and thrive at everything I did on site, whether that was loading trucks or manning a stacker. GrainCorp gives everyone the equal opportunity to really excel in the workplace and

I’m fortunate that my parents pushed me to give every opportunity my all.”

That willingness to learn quickly opened new doors. In 2024, Milli took a secondment to Walgett, NSW returning home only briefly before being urged by her then manager to apply for the Assistant Site Manager role.

“Hearing him speak so highly about my efforts gave me the confidence to apply and move nine hours away from my hometown,” Milli says.

Less than a year later, Milli is looking forward to her first harvest as Acting Site Manager.

“I’m still learning how to manage a large team, but I’ve met some amazing women in leadership roles at GrainCorp who are an inspiration,” said Milli.

“I’ve also had many male role models throughout my life, and I’m grateful for the guidance and support I’ve received from the men and women who’ve taught and mentored me along the way.”

I’m seeing so many more women in ag every day who I admire ... Definitely my mum - she was the first woman I knew who worked in agriculture and she’s an amazing woman.
