Is this the end: a community without its newspaper?

The future of the Warrumbungle Shire’s only remaining newspaper now hangs by a thread. One more chapter, or the final one, depends on who steps forward.

by LYNNE ESTENS T h e Co o n a b a r a b r a n Times was originally fo u n d e d i n 19 2 7 a s a n amalgamation of The Bligh Watchman (1877–1927) and The Clarion (1910–1927).

It continues to be a solid publication, made up of l oca l new s, com m un it y issues, sport, events and advertising.

For nearly 150 years, the Coonabarabran Times has been the voice, memory and hear tbeat of our region.

We have told the stories of the six towns across the Wa r r u m b u n g l e S h i r e – faithfully, consistently and with pride.

We’ve been here through d ro u g ht s , f l o o d s , f i re s , celebrations, tragedies and milestones. We were here when the world shut down during COVID and most countr y papers stopped printing.

We ke pt g o i n g, eve n w i t h o u t a d ve r t i s i n g o r events to fill our pages,

because our community deserved a paper – its own paper.

Now, for the first time since the 19th century, the future of t h e Co o na b a ra b ra n Times is uncertain.

After two years on the m a r k e t, n o b u y e r h a s stepped forward.

And unless someone with the passion to continue this work emerges, our region may soon lose not just a newspaper, but one of its most important community institutions.

What would we lose?

The loss would be deep, immediate and felt in every corner of the Shire.

We wo u l d l o se o u r re co rd of l o ca l l i fe: Australia Day awards honouring quiet achievers; kindergar ten photos cherished by generations of families; Bunny Bazaar s n a p s h o t s , A N Z AC , V P and Remembrance Day commemorations; the social pages, debutante photographs and simple moments that reflect who

we are.

We would lose the annual North West Equestrian Expo features – a highlight for so many young riders – along with favourites like Out and About Baradine and Coona Buzz.

We would lose coverage o f s p o r t, c l u b r e p o r t s , Council decisions, local gover nment notices, achievements that make our region proud, and the advertising that helps keep community life moving – from events and garage sa l es to fune ra l s, rea l estate and gover nment announcements.

A weekly paper is more than printed pages – it is the collective memory of a community.

W ithout it, ou r s to r i es vanish as quickly as they unfold.

A legacy built on service I n 19 7 8 , M a x E s t e n s joined the Coonabarabran T imes as an apprentice compositor.

Two decades later I joined him, and from 2010 we ran

the paper side by side.

O u r d a u g hte r Ka i t, inspired by the community she grew up in, returned home as a journalist and later became editor.

For Max, and for all of us, this paper was never just a business – it was a commitment to this district.

Max’s recent passing has left us shell shocked, feeling flat and struggling to find the motivation that once came so easily.

Making decisions about the future of the paper without him has been incredibly difficult.

But even in this grief, we know how much the Times means to the people it serves – and that belief has strengthened our resolve to try to see it continue – because its story is bigger than ours.

This year, the paper was recognised as the mostawarded publication at the 2025 Country Press NSW Awards of Excellence, taking home four major awards and a commendation.

It was a proud moment – not just for us personally, but for the entire district.

It p roved once again that sma l l com m un ities can punch far above their weight when given a voice.

Is there someone out there who will carry this forward?

The Times may be a niche business, but it remains a ra re and rewa rding opportunity.

Full training will be provided and the operation is flexible enough to be run off-site or from home.

It could suit a couple wo r k i n g to g et h e r, w i t h par t-time or full-time contributors, and it comes with the security of regular contract advertisers, strong government adver tising, established stockists and co n s i d e ra b l e ro o m fo r growth.

What now?

For the moment, the f i na l ed iti on of the Coonabarabran Times will be published on Thursday, 18 December 2025 before we embark on extended leave.

But whether the Co o n a b a r a b r a n T i m e s returns depends entirely on whether someone steps forward.

Our hope – our plea – is that someone with energy, curiosity and a commitment to telling the stories of this district will recognise the value of what has been built and ensure it continues.

Because if the Times falls silent, a whole community loses its voice.

Community unites for White Ribbon Day breakfast Coonabarabran came together on Tuesday, 25 November, for the annual White Ribbon Day breakfast at the Tree of Knowledge outside the Courthouse.

Hosted by the Wa r r u mbu ngle Domestic Violence Committee, the event drew strong community support as locals enjoyed bacon-and-egg r ol l s wh i le st a nd i ng together to speak out

against violence towards women.

Men and boys were especially encouraged to take part, helping reinforce the message of respect, safety and a c o m mu n i t y wh e r e women are heard.

POLICE NEWS Tambar Springs A wom a n h a s d ie d following a single-vehicle crash last week.

A round 5pm on F r iday, 21 November, emergency ser v ices were called to Premer Road, Tambar Springs, a b out 7 0 k i l ome t r e s east of Coonabarabran, following reports a white Nissan sedan had left the road and crashed into bushland.

The driver – a 57-yearold woman – was assessed

by NS W A mbu la nce pa ramed ics, however, died at the scene.

O f f icers attached O x ley Pol ice D istr ict e s t a bl i s h e d a c r i m e scene and commenced an investigation into the crash.

A report will be prepared for the in formation of the Coroner.

Tommingley A man has died after a trailer detached and struck his vehicle in the state’s west.

A b o ut 6 . 3 0 pm o n F r iday, 21 November, emergency services were called to Newell Highway, Tomingley – about 38km south of Narromine – following reports of a crash.

Officers attached to O r a n a M i d We s t e r n Police District attended and were told a trailer att ached t o a Toyot a Hilux had detached and collided with a Toyota Landcruiser.

driver – a 33-year-old ma n – was treat ed

by NS W A mbu la nce paramedics, however, he died at the scene.

The Hilux driver – a 34-year-old man – was uninjured and taken to hospital for mandatory testi ng, a nd released pending further investigation.

Today we are delighted to introduce the readers of the Coonabarabran Times to an award-winning Australian comic strip, Bushy Tales, created by cartoonist Ian Jones.

Ian has been one of Australia’s top comic s t r i p ca r to o n i s t s fo r many yea r s, havi ng been published widely since 1980. He f i r st conceived of a wombat as a comicstrip character about 3 5 yea r s ago, but it wasn’t until 2011 that the idea for a comic str ip with a wombat as a main character came to fruition. Ever s i n ce t h e n, I a n h a s been drawing the wonderful Bushy Tales comic strip and selling it to papers throughout Australia and to some overseas markets.

And Doug, the

finished product of that earlier prototype, is fast becoming everyone’s favourite wombat as a result.

The qua l it y of the Bushy Tales comic strip is not only measured by its readership popularity, but also by the nation’s top awards for cartoonists.

Ian has been a finalist for 11 years in a row as Comic Strip Car toonist of the Year at the Australian Cartoonists Association annual Stanley Awa rd s. A h i g h l i g ht of Ian’s distinguished ca r tooni ng ca ree r was being voted by

Australia’s cartoonists a s t h e C o m i c St r i p Cartoonist of 2024.

He is also a multi award winner at the annual Rotary National Cartoon Awards.

Ian has been married to Robyn fo r a l most 49 years and has s eve n ch i l d re n a n d 12 grandchildren. He i s a wo r l d -t ra ve l l e r, an award -winning photographer, and a keen golfer.

And he is absolutely t h r i l l e d to b r i n g h i s unique brand of humour and joy to the pages of the Coonaba rab ran Times.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR  editor@coonabarabrantimes.com Councillor expectations Two matters have arisen lately that have given me pause to consider what our expectations of the members of the Warrumbungle Shire Council should be.

In my view, the very first expectation of all councillors is that they operate with transparency, honesty and integrity in all of their dealings, especially when acting on behalf of ratepayers. If they cannot do this, and be seen to do it, one needs to question whether they should retain their positions of leadership and trust.

In this context, the first matter relates to an article printed in the Sydney Morning Herald of 29 September 2 0 2 5 , w hi ch rep ort s that charges have been laid against councillor Ray Lewis relating to an alleged dumping of asbestos-riddled building material from a building he owned onto Crown Land.

According to the article, the Shire Council issued councillor Lewis

a directive requiring him to obtain the necessary permits to handle the removal of friable asbestos during the demolition of the building. Instead, councillor Lewis is alleged to have dumped the equivalent of 80 truckloads of polluted material on Crown Land, approximately 20 metres from the Castlereagh River on the boundary fence of a property he leases. In addition, it seems he has been charged with providing false or misleading information to his own Council.

These are only allegations and councillor Lewis is entitled to the presumption of innocence. That said, my question is whether councillor Lewis should be required to step aside from his role of councillor until the matter is resolved? And if he is found guilty, should he be allowed to remain on Council, whose rules and directives he has allegedly flaunted?

The second matter was well reported in the Coonabarabran Times of

Thursday, 20 November 2025 concerning the unlawful activity of a Mr Randolf Rindfleish, operating within a Coolah tax agency, that resulted in the misappropriation of around $900,000 of clients’ funds. Whilst there is no suggestion that our mayor, Kathryn Rindfleish, had any involvement in, or knowledge of these activities, it is only natural that the matter will – rightly or wrongly – raise questions in the minds of many.

In these circumstances my next question would be, at what stage should the mayor step aside from her mayoral duties whilst the matters are clarified and, hopefully, her innocence of any wrongdoing is clearly established.

Finally, at what stage should the Council as a whole act to protect the good reputation of the Shire lest any perceived malfeasance begin to affect its successful operation.

Calls for Inquiry into greyhound racing T he Member for Barwon, Roy Butler, has called for any decision to close country greyhound tracks to be put on hold pending a parliamentary inquiry into Greyhound Racing NSW. Gr eyhou nd R ac i ng N S W (G R N S W ) h a s released an Optimisation Report that recommends clo si ng 15 t rack s i n country NSW, including Coonamble and Broken H i l l i n t he B a r wo n

electorate.

Last week, Mr Butler made a Private Members’ Statement to NSW Parliament calling for the parliamentary inquiry, with the terms of reference including: • T he objectives of GR NSW and their suitability; • E qu ity of access to GR NSW funds for regional clubs; • The support offered

by GRNSW to smaller

regional track facilities; • The role and objectives of the G r e y h o u n d We l f a r e Integrity Commission (GWIC); • Greyhound welfare m e a s u r e s i n c lud i n g rehoming programs; • Financial decisions of GR NSW including contract employment arrangements.

Mr Butler has also f l a g g e d t he ne e d t o amend the ‘objectives’

of GRNSW to include c on sider at ion of t he social and cultural role the sport plays in country NSW. “Country areas lack the social and recreational opportunities that our metropolitan and coastal cousins have,” Mr Butler. “ Greyhou nd raci ng provides family-friendly enter ta inment and builds social connections in many country communities.”

Zelle Border celebrates 100 years of memories Former Coonabarabran resident Zelle Border celebrated an amazing milestone on Saturday, 22 November – celebrating her 100th birthday!

Irene Zelle Bailey – always known as Zelle – was born in Gunnedah on 22 November 1925.

Her early life unfolded between Kelvin and Barber Streets, Gunnedah, where she grew up in a lively family with five sisters and one brother, all of whom have since passed.

Zelle began her working life at the Rural Bank before joining the relieving staff, travelling widely by train to assist b r a n c h e s a c ro s s t h e district.

On 4 March 1950, she married Jim Border, of ‘The Duke’, Bugaldie, and together they built a life rich in hard work and community. They first settled at ‘Rhode Farm’, Bugaldie, for six years, before moving to ‘Derra’, Goorianawa.

The couple were thrilled to welcome two children, Wendy and Russell, to whom they gave unwavering support.

Zelle and Jim’s journey eventually led them to purchase

the Coonabarabran Newsagency, which they ran for many years, becoming well-known faces around town.

After selling the business upon their retirement, they relocated to Terrigal, where Zelle enjoyed lawn bowls and was a member of Probus, experiencing many memorable holidays.

Jim passed away in 2008 and Zelle later moved to Wauchope before entering aged care in Port Macquarie in 2020.

Zelle Border received a special message from King Charles and Queen Camilla congratulating her on turning 100.

Queen Camilla, as well as Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese – recognition befitting a century well lived.

New Aged Care Act ROTARY WRAP UP strengthens seniors’ rights The new Aged Care Act 2024 came into effect on 1 November 2025. It introduces significant reforms aimed at strengthening the rights and safety of older Australians.

The reforms aim to reduce the use of restrictive practices and ensure that, when they are used, it is only with proper, informed consent.

What are restrictive practices?

Restrictive practices are interventions that restrict the rights or freedom of movement. In aged care, they may be used to manage behaviours of concern, but only when absolutely necessary and in accordance with the law.

There are five main types of restrictive practices: 1. Chemical restraint: The use of medication or a chemical substance to influence behaviour.

2. Environmental restraint: The restriction of a person’s free access to all parts of their environment (specific areas or activities).

3. Mechanical restraint: The use of a device to prevent, restrict or subdue a resident’s movement.

4. Physical restraint: The use of physical force to prevent, restrict or subdue movement.

5. Seclusion: The solitary confinement of a care recipient in a room or a physical space at any hour of the day or night.

What is an Enduring Guardian?

An Enduring Guardian is a person legally appointed to make personal, lifestyle and healthcare decisions for a person who can longer

make these decisions themselves due to illness, injury or disability.

What effect does the new Act have in relation to Guardianship documents?

An Enduring Guardian can only consent to restrictive practices if their appointment documents specifically authorise this. All existing Enduring Guardianship documents must be reviewed to ensure this authority is expressly included in the document.

What happens if the authority is not included in the Guardianship documents?

The aged care provider may refuse entry to a prospective resident, or the guardian of the resident may be required to apply to the NSW Civil & Administrative Tribunal for an order granting the necessary authority. This process can be timeconsuming and stressful.

Now is an ideal time to review your estate planning documents to ensure they remain current and continue to reflect your wishes.

Your Appointment of Enduring Guardian may need to be reviewed and updated.

We have been enjoy i ng some so cia l time together in a number of great places in our community. We had an adventure out at the farm with Marie and Tony Knight and a beautiful breakfast at Feathers Cafe.

Coming up, we will be

sharing a night to enjoy pizza, our Christmas party and a barbecue at the VRA shed, sharing a snag or two with the volunteers who are the backbone of these two organisations.

IN FOCUS: BUGALDIE TRAIN TRAGEDY

Tracks of tragedy remembered A new memorial plaque has been unveiled to honour train accident victims on the 90th anniversary of a devastating local tragedy.

by LIZ CUTTS Relatives of victims, visitors and community gathered at the site now known as the ‘Tracks of Tragedy’ near Bugaldie on Sunday, 9 November, to commemorate the anniver sa r y of the railway accident that claimed seven lives and left a lasting mark on the district.

The commemorative event to unveil a new plaque to replace the damaged original was the outcome of a project by the Baradine Ru s t y M e n’s S h e d to ensure the memor y of those lost in the 1935 d i sa s te r cont i n ues to be honoured by future generations.

Patrick Lever, secretary of the Baradine Rusty M e n’s Sh ed, sa i d m e m b e r s fe l t i t w a s important to restore the plaque so the story of the Tracks of Tragedy wouldn’t fade away.

“Over the years, the plastic plaque had weathered to the point where it could no longer be read,” he said.

“This memorial is about honouring those who lost their lives and for the relatives and community that came together in the aftermath.

“By restor ing the plaque, we’re helping to preserve a significant part of our local history and ensure that future generations can pause, reflect and remember the people whose lives were forever changed by that tragic event.”

At the time it happened

on 9 November, 1935, the disaster was declared the worse railway line c ro s s i n g a cc i d e nt i n NSW. Collision The terrible collision o c c u r r e d a t a l eve l crossing approximately 19 kilometres nor th of Coonabarabran, near the village of Bugaldie.

A motor lorry, carrying 13 people, was struck by a train, resulting in seven k i l l e d a n d s i x ot h e r s injured.

When he stopped at Bugaldie to buy petrol for the trip home, the owner/driver of the lorry, Jimmy Bi rchell, was approached by a small boy who asked if he and some others could get a ride to Coonabarabran.

Jimmy said that would b e f i n e a n d a g re e d to p i c k u p M r s E l l e n Presnell and her three grandchildren – baby Graham Chapman, aged five weeks, Leslie Chapman, t wo yea r s old and Colin Chapman, seven years old. George Muller gave up his seat in the front of the lorry to Mrs Presnell and the children and the men put the p ra m o n the back of the truck.

At around 1pm, steam train number 1205 from Mudgee was r unni ng on time and about to round the bend where the railway crossing was located.

The train was travelling at a little over 30mph when the train driver, Jim Wilson, first sounded the whistle. He could not see the crossing at the time because he was

negotiating a right-hand bend and his driving seat was on the left side of the steam engine.

As the train straightened up nearing the crossing his hear t stopped in his throat.

There, 45 yards from the crossing, he saw the lorry loaded with people and about to cross the line in front of the train. The men on the back of the truck turned to see what the noise was about and saw the engine about to collide with the lorry.

Alarmed Jim sounded his whistle again, this time continuously. But, as the lorry showed no sign of stopping, he became alarmed and in an act of desperation pulled the brakes and slammed the engine into reverse, shower ing the rails w it h s p a r k s – w h e e l s squealing.

In the truck, the driver and passengers were happily looking forward to the weekend break in Coonabarabran and one can only imagine them yelling, laughing and clamouring to be heard above the noise of the truck clattering and bouncing on the rough gravel of this road.

Most did not see or hear the train coming until, with an earth-shattering explosion, the train hit them.

The train sk idded, with its driving wheels churning in full reverse, k n o ck i n g t h e t r u ck’s front wheels apart with its buf fer, which then lodged firmly in the front of the truck. This then

d ragged the moto r lorry into the side of the train, propelling it some 3 0 m et r e s d o w n t h e northern side of the line in a blinding cloud of dust and sand.

The force of the collision was so great that one man, George F o r r e s t, w a s t h r o w n high above the engine and train passenger s watched in horror as he ca r t wheeled th rough the a i r, bounci ng of f the train’s dome and crashing down into the coal bunker.

When the dust settled, it was reported that there were bodies, camping gear and timber strewn along the line.

The carnage after the collision was described by a motor ist waiting at the other side of the crossing as “too awful for adequate description”.

He was later treated for acute shock.

There was no ambulance at that time in Coonabarabran and, of cou r se, no mobi l e phones. While the train staf f and pas senge r s did what they could for the injured, fireman Leo Reddy and guard Mr Ison erected an emergency telephone from the brake van. This consisted of a box containing a telephone and a long p o l e w h i c h re a c h e d between the telephone wire and two protruding contact which rested on the telephone lines.

Using this they contact Baradine railway station and summoned help.

as the blackest Sunday ever witnessed in Coonabarabran.

Mrs Mar tha Muller faced the largest loss that day. Her brother Jimmy and her son George had been killed. Her eldest son Fred, brother Roy and nephew Ber nie had been seriously injured. Most tragically, authorities at the time would not let her see the body of her son because of his horrific injuries. She is reported to have said, “I only wanted to see his hands”.

Jimmy Birchell left a widow and two children.

The fathe r of the Chapman children, Colin, faced the heartbreaking ordeal of attending the funeral of his two small sons while his wife and her mother were in hospital, too ill to be told of the tragedy.

Inquest At the inquest on 25 N ove m b e r, 193 5, t h e coroner stated that there was no blame attached to the driver of the train.

A rider was attached to the verdict saying ‘from the evidence adduced it appears that there is a strip of timber obscuring the view from the road to

the railway line, from the bend in the line to the level crossing and steps should be taken to get rid of this obstruction by the proper authorities’.

It should also be noted that timber loading ramps to load sleepers were secured along the driver’s side of the lorry.

These ramps interfered to some degree with the driver’s side vision.

Patrick Lever thanked everyone for attending the event, with a special appreciation going to J o h n M a c D o n a l d fo r pe r m i s s i on to use excerpts from his booklet – ‘Thirteen Rode on the Lorry of Death’.

“It’s strange standing h e re i n t h i s p l a ce of peace and serenity and tr ying to imagine that 90 years ago this was the scene of a violent co l l i s i on bet ween a train and a motor lorry, loaded to capacity with 13 local people and very probably the site of the greatest loss of life at a level crossing smash in Australia,” Mr Lever said.

“This collision had such a devastating and tragic effect on the surrounding towns, leaving families grieving for their loved ones lying dead, dying or severely injured along these t rack s – and a community shattered.

“I was amazed when I was told about this event

and it was resolved by the Rust y Men’s Shed that something should be done in remembrance of those who tragically perished here. I hope we have cont r i buted someth i ng of va l ue w i t h t h i s p e r m a n e nt memorial.

“The Baradine Ru s t y M e n’s S h e d extends sincere thanks to ever yone who has suppor ted the project and Father Karl Sinclair for taking the memorial ser vice, Steven McGlashan for transpo r ting the rock fo r the plaque and th e Wa r r u m b u n g l e Sh i re Counci l fo r it s generous her itage grant assistance, w h i c h h e l p e d m a ke the memo r ial plaque renewal possible.”

Rail crash memorial rekindles family connections The recent unveiling of a memorial plaque near Bugaldie has done far more than acknowledge a long-ago tragedy – it has brought families together in ways no one expected. At the commemoration, held on Sunday, 9 November, descendants of those affected by the fatal train accident gathered to honour lives lost and reconnect with relatives they never knew they had.

by LIZ CUTTS For Goulburn resident Trish Muller Parson, the commemoration held on Sunday, 9 November, brought the chance to stand alongside newlydiscovered relatives and ref lect on the shared h ist or y that brought them together. “ This experience is super important to us,” she said.

“My grandfather, Fred Muller, was in the train smash. He survived with injuries and if he hadn't survived, I wouldn't be here.

“But the tragedy also me a n s th at a bu nch of my relatives didn't survive; it was a huge impact for the whole

family for many, many years. My grandfather didn’t talk to me about it b e c au s e it wa s a pretty pain ful thing.

However, as I grew up, I did family research and talked to other family members and I realised what a what a horrific experience it was for all of them. “ I am i ncred ibly lucky to have had my grandfather survive and we’re very honoured to be here and very grateful to the Baradine Rusty Men’s Shed for putting up the memorial, because it me a n s s omet h i n g big to us. Our people won’t be forgotten, and the experience won’t be forgotten.”

Trish said that over

the years she has managed to link-up with Muller relatives on social media, meeting some of them for the first time at the memorial event. “ It was g reat t o connect with the Muller side of the family as a result of doing the research for our family tree,” she added.

“Now I have met some of them today for the first time, which is a bonus for me and I am very grateful for that. I look forward to staying connected with them for many years to come.

“I think things like this bring us together, it is a bonding experience that not everybody has.

We have got positive and good out of it today

and I think the family members who were in the smash, whether they lived or died, would all be incredible proud to see such a large group of people honouring the occasion with love and care for each other – it’s a beautiful thing. “ I would love to be in contact with other relatives who were involved in the tragedy.

We a r e a l s o r el at e d to the Bi rchi lls ver y closely. They were almost neighb ou r s w ith the Mullers for a long time, which is why they were working together at the one sawmill. It would be nice to meet other descendants.”

had found the memorial tribute to be a positive experience. “ Not ever y tragedy we experience in our lives, and we have all experienced them, can r e s u lt i n s omet h i n g positive,” he said.

“Today, even though it is 90 years later, there is a positive in the midst of such great tragedy – and in that alone one should find hope and something to keep smiling about.

“At the time it was an extremely difficult thing for the families to endure, but we feel that we have had a positive outcome by reconnection through death 90 years l at er! S o, th i s st or y does not have to end in tragedy.”

“I remember my mother told me that the Syd n ey n ew s pa pe r s pr inted the stor y ‘Thirteen Rode on the Lorry of Death’ and I wanted to know more about it,” Mr McDonald

said.

“A t t h e t i m e , I had access to cour t records and I started to research the event.

I also obtained a lot of i nfo r m at i o n f ro m members of the fa m i l i es. O ne of my cousins, who was a train d r iver of the same model of train that was involved in the accident, helped me and then information started to come from everywhere. I put the stor y together really for the benefit of both the Muller and Birchill families. “ F i ve yea r s a g o, we visited the site of

the tragedy, although a t t h a t s ta g e I d i d not k now the exact l o c a t i o n . H o w eve r, Coonabarabran resident, David Rayner knew fair bit of local history and he brought me out and showed me where the location was.

I had a white timber cross made and put a small plaque listing the names of those who lost their lives. “ M o r e r e c e n t l y, Christine Evans, from the Coonabarabran H i s to r y S o c i et y, contacted me to say that the plaque was missing off the cross.

it had been stolen or perhaps someone had borrowed it for some reason. Of course, it t u r n ed out that th e Baradine Rusty Men’s Shed had borrowed it to get the details for a new plaque.

“They got in touch with me and it has all developed from there.

“I’m so pleased that it has al l happened in this way and that it has become such a big event. Hopefully, m o re peop l e i n the future will know about it and pass the word on.

I am delighted to have contr ibuted to local history in this way.”

Infants’ intensive swimming, along with primary swimming a nd water polo, has now kicked off for sport – and we absolutely love it! The town pool sparkles blu e a n d e x c i t e d chatter fills the air as students practise safety jumps, learn how t o r e ach t he edge, tread water, and throw the ball as far as they can to their team mates and opponents.

The highlight of the week, however, was undoubtedly the moment we slimed our principal, Mrs Evans!

G’day folks.

Apart from a sitting day on Friday, 28 November, (to deal with legislation passi ng th r ough the Legislative Council) the Legislative Assembly has risen for the year. It won’t sit again until February next year, which will be only 13 months out from the next election.

That should change the character of Parliament next year, particularly with new people leading the L iberals and the Nationa ls. I want to c o n g r at u l at e K e l l i e Sloane and Gurmesh Singh on gaining the leadership roles and I look forward to working with them.

O ver the nex t few weeks, I have meetings planned with federal ministers, committee meetings, as well as meeti ngs and events around Barwon.

As we head toward summer and Christmas, things will tend to wind down for most people and there will be plenty of socialising. I hope that everyone enjoys the festive season, but I want to urge everyone to take it easy on the roads over this time.

Remembrance Day Public Interest Debate On 11 November, the Public Interest Debate i n Pa rl iament was a b out R emembr a nc e D ay, a c k nowle d g i n g the impor tance of t h i s c om memor at ion to all Australians, its significance in our history and thanking all veterans for their sacrifices. It was a subject that is particularly poignant to me and my family.

My g randfather served in both World War I and World War II, my father was a TPI (t ota l ly perma nently incapacitated) veteran of the Korean War, I served in the Australian Army, although, fortunately, I never saw battle, and my son Gabe is now serving with 3RAR in Townsville.

Many families across the cou ntr y have a connection to R e m e m b r a n c e D a y, many know someone who fought in a conflict, or who served their country in the military, or are currently serving.

Those who join the military effectively sign a blank cheque for their country, not knowing what the result might be. Some may never see conflict, but all join with some expectation they may be called on should their nation ever go to war.

Pe ople h ave m a ny d i f ferent reasons for joining up, some do it because they know they will learn useful skills, some because they see it as an adventure, some to travel, some to get an education, or even quality health care that they might not get elsewhere.

Over a century ago thousands of Australians signed up to fight in what became known as

‘ The Great War’, over 400,000 of them, and a r ou nd 6 0 ,0 0 0 d ied .

After the war ended on 11 November, 1918, it became important for thousands of Australians to remember the war. It was part of processing the grief and understanding the conflict.

November 11 has been commemorat ed si nce then around the world as Remembrance Day, to remember the sacrifices made, the lives lost, but also to look forward and to commit to a future where peace is possible.

Lest we forget.

Bill to protect police memorials Still on the subject of remembrance, in the first sitting week of November I introduced a bill to make police memorials protected places on a par with war memorials.

In this country we protect sacred spaces whether they be places of worship, cemeteries, sites of histor ical or cultural significance or memorials. These are places where people can go to pay their respects, pray, spend a moment in contemplation or gather for ceremon ies a nd commemorations.

W h i le most people recog n ise the sacred nature of these spaces and know how to act when they are in them, around them or near them, there are people who deface, damage or defile these spaces, or behave in ways that show disrespect.

This is why we have laws to deter people from damaging these public spaces or from behaving inappropriately in them.

L aw s we r e r e c e nt ly passed to protect war memor ia ls a nd so it seems only fair that the same should be done for police memorials.

Like people who serve in the military, the police have earned our respect.

Police serve and protect the public daily. Most people will have some engagement with police on a regular basis, many people will receive their assistance, many know someone who is a police officer. Police are often called on to put their lives on the line, and some pay the ultimate price, losing their life in the line of duty.

All those who serve, whether in the military or in the police, deserve our respect. It is important that we make it clear that memorials to their service are off limits in any partisan debates or to be misused in activist campaigns.

The protection the bill gives to the memorials me a n s t h at a jud g e can rule that defiling, defacing, damaging or disrespecting a police memorial is something more than just mindless destr uction of public property, or a random act of bad behaviour, and that it could or should attract a higher penalty.

Standards Inquiry An area that has been a major concern to me, since even before I was first elected, is the number of “ghost services” in regional NSW. These are services, particularly youth services, that have government funding but don’t have meaningful impact on, or presence i n , the c om mu n it ies where they are meant to operate. If you ask people in the communities where they are based, they’ll tell you that they were never consulted and have no idea whether the service still, or ever did, operate.

We have heard stories about funded programs that pay for a person to turn up, open the doors, wait for people to turn up, then close and go home after a few hours.

That is why I have pushed hard to have a review of service delivery standards in government programs in regional areas. As chair of the Investment, Industry and Regional Development committee I have been able to get the inquiry up and running.

Notice of Motion on Drought When I was first elected the Member for Barwon, the electorate was in the grip of the worst drought in the history of European presence in this country.

The government of the day was slow to assist those who were affected by that natural disaster, because they were lacking a structured approach to drought.

I began calling for the government to develop such an approach, but after the drought broke a nd the c ou nt r yside experience some good wet seasons, it seemed the idea of developing a structured drought policy was not viewed with any sense of urgency.

However, we h ave seen signs recently that parts of NSW may be going into drought. So I moved at Notice of Motion during the November sitting weeks calling on the government to note that parts of the state are drying and the impact that is having on agriculture, small businesses and regional economies.

Also, to be concerned a b out t he l ac k o f a structured approach to drought to assist with re c og n isi ng when t o assist farmers and to help them recover from it.

To work with the federal government on defining responsibilities and to ensure that NSW is not left without a plan for the next drought.

Notice of Motion on Rail Crossing Safety Recently, a terrible accident resulted in the death of a young child at a level crossing at Baan Baa. It highlighted the dangerous nature of rail crossings in regional areas. During the November sitting weeks I introduced a Notice of Motion that the

government: 1. Notes there are 1360 public level crossings in NSW. 2. Expresses concern that only 434, or just under 32 per cent of these crossings have active traffic controls.

3. Sadly, acknowledges each year we have deaths involving people, vehicles and rail.

4. Urges this Parliament to be more united in putting active traffic controls in place on level crossings, using a r isk-based pr ior ity system.

More needs to be done to make these crossings safer, before another fatality occurs.

Civics The Opposition You would probably have heard the news recently that both the leader of the National Party and the leader of the Liberal Party in NSW Parliament had resigned.

Mark Speakman had been elected leader of his party after its defeat in the last election, making him Leader of the Opposition, as was Dugald Saunders who became his Deputy Leader.

A f t er a n ele c t ion , Government is formed by whichever party has t he h i g he s t nu mb er of members elected to seat in the Legislative A ssembly, the pa r t y with the second highest number forms what is known as the Opposition.

In the NSW C o n s t it ut i o n A c t o f 1902, the legislation that sets out the structure of government, there is no specific mention of an ‘Opposition’, but the opposition exists by convention a nd parliamentary practice that goes back hundreds of years.

Political parties were ways of gathering likeminded politicians who could vote on legislation as a united group, or impose the discipline of voting the same way on any given issue. This helps stabilise politics, making it easier for a person who leads a party to pass legislation without the need for having to negotiate w ith ever y member of parliament to vote for a bill.

The Opposition has no formal role in governing, but they play an impor tant role in holding the government t o a c c o u nt , m a k i n g sure they act fairly and represent the interests of all voters and to point out any errors that the government might be making.

Without an organised opposition, a government might tend to be too powerful, or to look after only its traditional voter base. The Opposition is there to remind us that there are other ways of doing things.

The experiment of the CentralWest Orana REZ has shown that centralising solar, wind and battery projects in one region has a massive impact on the community. It impacts on r o ad i n f r a s t r uc t u r e , on t he environment, on the very fabric of these towns.

T he r ou ndt able d i s cussed the regional housing shortage and talked about local solutions, which are always the best answer to local problems.

This is a good step towards working together for affordable and appropriate housing to retain young people in our communities and attract more people to provide essential services into the future.

It was also my pleasure to attend the Dubbo Regional Sports Awards last week. Dubbo has a strong sporting community and I congratulate each of the deserving winners along with those of Dubbo Regional Council's Dubbo Day Awards, including Donna Fa lconer who re ceived the 2 02 5 Tony McGrane Award recognising out st a nd i ng c ontr ibution t o the community.

In Lightning Ridge, I attended the opening of renovations to the Lightning Ridge Bowling Club. This is a wonderful addition to the club which is a hub for social interactions in this

great town. Well done to the Board of Directors who have made this happen, and to all the people who have come before them who have contributed to this club.

I met this month with Shanna Whan, Australian of the Year ‘Local Hero’ in 2022 and a Member of the Order of Australia, in Narrabri to hear about the work Sober in the Country is doing.

Sober in the Country is changing and saving countless rural lives through an incredibly user-friendly message that it's #OK2SAYNO (to booze) - and that our mates choosing less or no booze deserve to be catered for and supported in that choice.

Shanna and fellow AgriFutures Austra l ia n Ru ra l Woma n of the Year recipient, Carol Mudford, from sHedway, featured on Sunday on Landline. I know the two organisations will continue to work together for the good of their communities.

F i na l ly, th is week is the last Parliamentary sitting week of the year and I will be taking the Albanese L abor G over n ment t o t ask over absolutely dangerous planned Telstra outages in Lightning Ridge, Rowena and Brewarrina.

These outages go for two to seven days, leaving businesses without the means to carry out transactions, ordering and other processes essential to business, farms without connection to the outside world and people on the Telstra network without access to lifesaving emergency services.

This is despite an election promise

by Labor to provide universal mobile coverage across Australia “anywhere Australians can see the sky”. Labor’s promise was to expand Triple Zero access for all Australians, expand outdoor voice and SMS coverage into existing mobile black spots, and to improve the availability of mobile signals during disasters and power outages.

Instead, we are seeing the signal switched off altogether for extended periods.

This cannot happen. We have seen this happen before and unfortunately, there have been serious incidents and even deaths.

This would not happen in the city, and I will be asking questions at the highest level.

WEATHER WATCH The main feature of recent weather events was the for mation of Tropical Cyclone Fina very close to the Top End of the Northern Territory. It was a small, but intense system with central pressure of 991mbs.

The heaviest rainfalls

from Cyclone Fina was at Middle Point, Humpty Doo, when a total of 430mms fell to Sunday morning, the heaviest daily fall for November ever recorded in the Northern Territory.

Tropical cyclones fo r m i n g a s e a r l y a s N ovembe r a re ra re occurrences. Fina was the first November cyclone since 20 05, when that led to a very hot summer in Victoria and NSW – it was the hottest summer in Coonabarabran for 87 yea r s. Max imum temperatures up to 43 degrees in nor th- east Victoria and down to Melbourne.

March 2006 was also ve r y hot, up to nea r 40 degrees during the second week.

Other November cyclones were in 1910 and 1973 and those also led to excessive rainfalls from December up to April in our region.

Tropical Cyclone Fina has certainly led to veryhot conditions in the

central part of the nation.

Birdsville recorded 47 degrees, the third hottest behind 48.7 degrees in November 1990 and 48.5 degrees in November 2006.

December 1990 was very hot in our region, the hottest December for 33 years, but heavy rain fell in January 1991 and early February, however, March was warmer and drier.

December 2006 was warmer and drier than usual with bushfires, but January to early March 2 0 07 was wet ter and slightly warmer.

Tennant Creek had its hottest October on record with a mean-maximum te m p e ra t u re of 3 8 . 0 degrees. The previous hottest October there was in 1988.

Most of southern Victoria including Melbourne and places in East Gippsland have had well-above-average ra i nfa l l du r i ng both October and November, However, north from most of northern Victoria right up to Bourke had dry and warmer conditions in both October and November.

The last time this type of weather profile happened was 102 years ago in 1923, after which we had a rather wet summer in our region, but a cold dry autumn followed in 1924.

Coona nets another great season Coonabarabran Netball Association has wrapped up its 2025 season, celebrating its youngest and most energetic players with a presentation on Monday, 24 November, for the NetSetGo program, Junior Netball and Walking Netball.

The afternoon marked the end of the 2025 N et Set G o p ro g ra m,

a n i n t r o d u c t o r y, skills-based initiative designed for children aged 4–7.

fun on the court.

Club volunteers were acknowledged for their dedication in delivering NetSetGo, Junior Netball and Walking Netball throughout the year.

finals of the Twilight Netball competition.

In a close A-Grade contest, Cal lei ja Constr uction edged out Netty Bettys to claim the 2025 Twilight title, with Emily Matthews named Most Valuable Player.

Cole has now ridden 10 winners and it was a cool and well-judged ride on Master Of Disguise, which led early before being steadied to have a nice run close to Life’s A Party.

Olympic excellence to visit Coona Swim Club Regional swim coach Stephen Howell and Australian Olympic swimmer Matt Wilson will be joining the Coonabarabran Swimming Club next week for a jam-packed day of coaching, bringing world-class expertise to local swimmers.

This season, 50 swimmers have signed up, training from 6pm to 7pm, Monday to Wednesday, w ith Thu r sday evening dedicated to time trials.

Club president, Jen Staniforth said families were buz zing with enthus iasm fo r the season ahead.

“Training has been going really well. The vibe is excitement and we’ve had a bunch of new enrolments, which is wonderful to see!”

Last year’s two-day program with Howell was a major highlight and anticipation is high for this year’s clinic, scheduled for Saturday, 6 December.

“Stephen is returning

and bringing Olympic swimmer Matt Wilson along with him,” Jen said.

“This is a huge opportunity and inspiration for all Coona Swim Club kids.”

Club members have been looking forward to the t ra i n i ng day, ready to take their new s k i l l s s t ra i g ht to th e diving block.

“The anticipation has created a wonderful e n e rg y i n t h e c l u b, a n d i t ’s c l e a r t h i s development day will be a highlight of the season,” Jen said.

Support from local b u s i n e s s , Ro a c h’s Timber and Hardware has been instrumental in making the event possible and ensuring the club continues to thrive. “ R o a c h ’ s Coonabarabran has played a vital role in making development days possible through their generous community support,” Jen said.

She encourages children in the communit y to dip a toe in the water and immer se themselves in the welcoming, confidence -building atmosphere of the Coonabarabran Swimming Club.

“J o i n i n g a s w i m cl ub i s a wo nd e r f u l way fo r k ids to stay active and make new friends in a supportive environment,” she said.

“It is great to see the children every Thursday night cheering each other on – it doesn’t m a t te r h ow ‘g o o d’ you are at freestyle, because swim club is just about giving it a go!”

Volunteer of the Year awards finalists off to Sydney event The New England and Northern Inland Volunteer of the Year finalists are packing their bags and heading to Sydney to join around 300 of their peers to see who will be named the NSW Volunteer of the Year for 2025.

The local volunteers were selected earlier this year as regional finalists for the statewide volunteer awards in one of 25 local ceremonies covering all parts of NSW. The Centre for Volunteering CEO Gemma Rygate urged people from across the region to show their support for their local finalists.

“Volunteers help make communities stronger, healthier and more resilient. They’re worth their weight in gold and we need to let them know how proud we are of their efforts,” she said.

Finalists from the North West area include Adult Volunteer of the Year Kamala Wheeler, of Moree, and Emergency Volunteer of the Year Sam Berry, formerly of Narrabri.

Young Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Caitlin Blanch (Tamworth), Senior Volunteer of the Year was Margaret Lenord (Inverell), and Volunteer Team of the Year went to Ruby Mae’s Wish.

Kamala Wheeler, or Kam as she is known, has been a leading Moree SES rescuer, trainer and leader for almost 40 years across the North West region.

She is now the deputy unit commander at Moree SES and

He has been a leading

emergency volunteer over the past 20 years, having also served with Fire and Rescue NSW and the NSW RFS. The 2025 NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards State Gala ceremony will be held in Sydney on

Thursday, December 4.

Award winners will be announced across seven categories, including the inaugural NSW Emergency Volunteer of the Year, and the 2025 NSW Volunteer of the Year.

Second teen charged for alleged break and enter in Walgett Police news

A second teenager has been charged after an attempted break and enter in Walgett.

About 8pm on Monday, November 17, a group of four youths allegedly attempted to enter a property on Montkeila Street, Walgett, forcing open the rear screen door.

After allegedly attempting to gain access through a second rear door, the group – allegedly armed with screwdrivers – returned to the front of the home, before fleeing the scene.

A woman in her 70s was inside the home at the time; however, was uninjured during the incident.

Following inquiries, about 9.40pm on Monday on November, 7, officers attached

to Central North Police District attended a home on George Sands Way, Walgett, where they arrested a 14-year-old boy.

He remains before a children’s court charged with enter prescribed premises of any person without lawful excuse, enter building/land with intent to commit indictable offence, and breach of bail.

Following further inquiries, about 6pm on Friday, November 21, a 15-year-old boy

attended Walgett Police Station where he was arrested and charged with enter prescribed premises of any person without lawful excuse and enter building/land with intent commit indictable offence.

He was refused bail and appeared at a children’s court on Saturday, November 22.

Inquiries under Operation Soteria continue.

Cancer Council NSW releases key findings from “Cancer, Work and You” community forum

“Ian was a good friend to our council, working to improve cross-border issues for our communities such as Mungindi, Boggabilla and Toomelah,” Mayor Susannah Pearse said.

“He was highly committed to his role, determined to cut through bureaucracy and stand up for our border communities.

“He visited our shire as recently as October for the Border Region of Councils’ annual general meeting, where he was engaged, genuinely interested in our issues, and supportive of all our border councils.”

Cr Pearse said he was a true public servant and was there to help.

“We pass on our sincere condolences to all who knew him, including his loved ones,” Cr Pearse said.

“He will be very sorely missed.”

Cancer Council NSW has released a report from its “Cancer, Work and You” forum in Tamworth, calling for stronger support for people affected by cancer to remain in the workforce.

The forum, opened by Kevin Anderson, Member for Tamworth, brought together people living with cancer, carers, local employers and Cancer Council NSW staff to discuss the challenges Australians living in regional areas face when navigating cancer alongside employment and outlining practical solutions to keep people in the workforce.

Cancer affects nearly every Australian family, with two in five people diagnosed by the age of 85.

Brad Gellert, manager of the policy and advocacy unit at Cancer Council NSW said for many, the impact goes beyond physical and emotional challenges.

“Almost half of people with cancer who are of working age are not in the workforce, leading to financial hardship and reduced quality of life,” Mr Gellert said.

“This often means struggling to cover essential medical expenses, daily living costs and supporting their families. Without a steady income, many face increased stress and uncertainty, which can affect their overall recovery and wellbeing.”

Throughout the forum, participants engaged in group discussions to develop practical solutions for supporting people affected by cancer in the workplace. Key suggestions included extending leave entitlements to casual workers through portable leave schemes, adding tax concessions for individuals or businesses, reviewing eligibility for government support payments, strengthening flexible work arrangements

and improving access to dedicated helplines and information services focused on mental health, workplace rights and returnto-work planning.

Building on these insights, Cancer Council has identified priority areas in its report for ongoing advocacy. Some of these include: • Advocating for tax concessions, such as waiving capital gains tax or stamp duty when cancer forces the sale of a business or home.

• Pushing for reforms that extend leave protections to casual workers impacted by cancer.

• Expanding on Cancer Council's existing support line to include a dedicated workplace advisory service for employers and employees navigating cancer-related workplace challenges.

• Working with the government to increase carer leave entitlements.

Mr Gellert said the Tamworth forum demonstrates how local voices can drive meaningful change.

“Cancer doesn’t just happen in hospitals, it happens in homes, workplaces and communities. We heard loud and clear that people want to work, but the system isn’t doing enough to support them.

“Our goal now is to take what we’ve heard in Tamworth and turn those insights into policy reform, so that no one living with cancer has to choose between their health and their livelihood.

“By prioritising key areas such as workplace protections, flexible financial support, and targeted information services, Cancer Council NSW can continue to drive meaningful change through advocacy and collaboration, because tackling cancer takes all of us.”

Storm-affected producers urged to complete damage assessment to access assistance The Member for Barwon, Roy Butler, is calling on producers impacted by recent severe storms to complete a damage assessment through the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) to access targeted assistance and resources.

Recent hailstorms and winds up to 110 kmh have caused significant damage to crops and livestock in Burren Junction, Pilliga, and Walgett, leaving many producers uncertain about the availability of support.

“People impacted by the recent storm have contacted my offices to find out if they can access assistance and resources for damage to their crops and animals,” Mr Butler said.

“The good news is they can, through the PiNDDA survey. It’s a simple process that

can be completed on a home computer or smartphone at any time.”

The Primary Industries Natural Disaster Damage Assessment (PiNDDA) survey helps government agencies, industry organisations, and communities understand the scale and regional distribution of a disaster’s impact on agriculture and plan for recovery.

To complete the survey, producers will need estimated areas of crop affected, kilometres of fencing damaged, number of animals deceased, and the estimated cost of damage to specialised equipment and infrastructure.

Local Land Services (LLS) or DPI officers are available to assist with completing the survey.

Community kindness fuels the future of rural healthcare

The Country Women’s Association Barwon Group has proudly awarded $35,000 in medical grants; the amount will be shared amongst 14 local students pursuing health-related studies, including several from the Wee Waa district.

This vital and valued support helps foster the next generation of rural healthcare professionals.

The 2025 BGMG recipients include: Alice Berry from Rowena, who is studying social work; Amber Coleman from Rowena, who is studying nursing; Lacey Evans from Wee Waa, who is studying nursing; Caitlin Kable from Wee Waa, who is studying occupational therapy; Joe Madden from Wee Waa, who is studying physiotherapy; Jemima Powell from Burren Junction, who is studying occupational therapy; Sarah Ellison from Walgett, who is studying social science; Grace Hopcroft, from Walgett, who is studying child and family health nursing (post grad.); Isobel Pye from Walgett, who is undertaking a Masters of Medicine (skin cancer); Bridget Ritter from Lightning Ridge, who is studying medical science; Hareem Sohail from Lightning Ridge, who is studying medicine; Ambrosia Wilmans from Lightning Ridge, who is studying applied psychology and counselling; and Matilda Wilmans from Lightning Ridge, who is studying youth work and community services.

The North West Magazine asked the bright, young students from our district how they feel about being named as a recipient and what the grant means to them, in terms of supporting their future studies. They all expressed their gratitude and commitment to making a positive impact on their much-loved rural communities.

“I’m really thankful to receive this grant. It makes a genuine difference while I’m studying full time and gives me a bit more breathing room to focus on long placements, assessments, and coursework. I also really appreciate the support from the community,” said Alice Berry.

Lacey Evans shared: “I am truly honoured to be a recipient of this award, and I am deeply grateful for the support. This opportunity means a lot to me and it motivates me to con-

tinue striving toward my academic and future goals, knowing that there are people who believe in me.”

Caitlin Kable commented: “I’m incredibly grateful to be a recipient of this grant. As part of my degree (Bachelor of Occupational Therapy) I need to undertake 1000 hours of unpaid placement, the assistance from the grant allows me to focus more fully on my coursework and clinical training and ease the financial pressures of university life.”

Joe Madden described receiving the grant as ‘a real privilege’. “I am very grateful to be a recipient of the CWA medical grant,” Joe added.

“I am thankful for the opportunities that having this grant will provide me into the future. It will support me during my 20 weeks of unpaid placement that I have as a requirement for my physiotherapy degree. I feel blessed to have received this grant.”

Sophie Sendall said: “I am beyond grateful to the CWA for this grant as it will provide invaluable support towards my tuition and upcoming placement. I am also so lucky to have grown up in a small community that has inspired me to pursue medicine with hope of easing the burden that is limited healthcare in these beautiful small towns. I look forward to continuing my studies and one day giving back to the rural communities that have supported me all my life. Thank you.”

“I am extremely thankful and honoured for the opportunity and recognition of my contri-

bution to the medical field,” said Amber Coleman.

“I am incredibly grateful for the Barwon Group Medical Grant supporting my nursing career and motivating me to continue making a difference in the community.

“Moving forwards, the grant will help significantly with my nursing studies particularly aiding the required educational resources.

Additionally, the grant will contribute towards placement costs, often being based away from home, significantly benefiting my education,” said Amber.

Jemima Powell said: “It means so much and the grant is so helpful. With any degree in health there are a lot of hours in the classroom but also a lot outside including unpaid placements - without this help it wouldn’t be as smooth sailing. Knowing that you have this support from the CWA and your community makes you want to give back in the future. It makes me feel proud to tell people where I grew up, and this support makes me think even more about how I can use my degree to give back to the community.”

Jemima agreed that grants such as those offered by the CWA provide valuable assistance to country students, who face unique challenges and financial burdens when studying away from home without the option to live with their families.

In addition to the main grants, a $500 award for the best applicant essay was presented, kindly sponsored by the Northumberland Group of CWA. This year the essay winner selected by the Northumberland Group of CWA was Grace Hopcroft from Walgett who is undertaking post graduate studies in child and family health nursing. The CWA Barwon Group Medical Grant Committee was formed in 1998 to raise funds to assist local students studying any recognised health related field.

Part of its mission is to encourage graduates to return to their rural roots to set up practice.

Mr Singh attended university in Sydney and had a career in advertising and software before returning to work on the family’s farm in Woolgoolga growing macadamias and blueberries and has been the Member for Coffs Harbour since 2019.

Previously, he served as the opposition spokesperson for regional health and emergency services, and the North Coast.

North West Magazine readers would be familiar with Mr Singh who rallied with ‘Save Wee Waa Hospital’ campaigners, collecting petition signatures in Sydney earlier this year.

The new Nats leadership team raised concerns about Wee Waa hospital in question time last Tuesday.

It’s understood Mr Singh is the first farmer to lead the NSW Nationals in more than three decades. Mr Singh also made history as the first person of Sikh (Punjabi) heritage to lead a major Australian political party.

The fourth-generation Australian farmer, whose great-grandfather moved from India 130 years ago, emphasised “I never see myself as anything but Aussie,” Mr Singh said last Tuesday.

In a statement released last Monday, Dugald Saunders said, “For the past two and a half years, I have had the privilege of leading the NSW Nationals – today I am stepping down from that position.

“It’s been an honour to lead the Parliamentary team during a challenging time in Opposition, and I’ve always done my best to represent regional NSW. “It’s a difficult decision, but it is the right time for me to take a step back and focus more on my family and myself. It’s also the right time to allow a new leader to take up the fight ahead of the next election. I thank my family, my staff, my team and the party, for all of their support.”

Following the resignation of Mr Saunders, NSW Liberal leader Mark Speakman announced he would step down from his position on Thursday following speculation he had lost the support of Liberal MPs. Member for Vaucluse Kellie Sloane was elected unopposed to the NSW Liberal leadership on Friday, becoming the NSW Opposition Leader.

Natalie Ward continues to serve as the Liberals’ deputy leader.

National Agriculture Day a great reminder that farmers grow our future: NSW Farmers NSW Farmers says National Agriculture Day is a great reminder for all Aussies of the opportunities and benefits agriculture provides.

The day is celebrated on the third Friday of November every year, and this year was marked on November 21.

NSW Young Farmers’ Council chair Jess Ryan said NSW’s $25.5 billion agricultural sector not only provided a diverse range of careers but offered food security for hungry mouths here and around the globe.

“Our farmers keep food on the table, clothes on our backs, people in

jobs they love, and whole families caring for the land and ensuring food security for generations to come,” Ms Ryan said.

“It’s a sector with a really positive story – and it’s a story we need to start sharing far and wide, if we want to be able to feed the future.”

There was no time like National Agriculture Day to reflect on how food gets on the nation’s forks, Ms Ryan said, with agriculture playing a key role in everyone’s lives around the planet.

“From the paddock to a plate at your favourite restaurant, or from

the shearing shed to the fashion shows, agriculture is all around us, and we’re so lucky to have such an incredible sector right here in Australia,” Ms Ryan said.

“Our farmers are world leaders in what they do, with the sustainability and health credentials of our fresh food second to none, and our fibre is very much in demand across many different markets.

“We should be proud of all we have achieved as Australian agriculture, and ready to tell our good story of farming for food security with the world.”
