Four gongs for Times team The Coonabarabran Times has emerged as the most awarded newspaper at the 2025 Country Press NSW Awards of Excellence, taking home four major awards and one commendation at the statewide celebration of regional journalism. The awa rds were announced at a gala dinner held in Yarrawonga on Friday, 24 October, marking the 125th anniversary of Country Press NSW. The Times was recognised for excellence across multiple disciplines — including w r iting, photog raphy and publishing — with wins i n B e s t M a g a z i n e/ Special Publ ication, Best Opinion/Editorial, Best Agricultural Photo and the inaugural Overall Photographic E xcellence awa rd. The newspaper also received a commendation in Best Commercial Feature fo r i t s l o c a l d i n i n g s h owca s e ‘Tu ck I n’, published earlier this year. Former Times employee and p h oto g ra p h e r, J e s s Richards claimed two of the night’s top honours for her image ‘Ready fo r Ha r vest’, fe a t u r i n g B a r a d i n e agronomist and farmer, Alexander Deans, and h i s daughte r O l ivia, standing in a field of wheat. Judges praised the photog raph fo r its optimism, composition and ability to “highlight

the human story within the rural setting”. J es s sa i d s h e wa s “lost for words” after the announcement. “From chasing a harvest story through my lens to holding two photography awards in my hands — I am beyond proud,” Jess said. “It means so much to see my work recognised. Thank you to Kait and Lynne at the Coonabarabran Times for giving me a chance to work for them. “Congratulations to Kait and to the whole team on their wins and a massive thanks to the judges for the honour and feedback.” Editor, Kait Britton, was awa rded Best Opinion/Editor ial for her moving piece ‘I Measure Ever y Gr ief I M e e t ’, w r i t t e n i n response to a tragedy that deeply affected the Coonabarabran community in May this year. J udg es desc r i bed her work as “deeply personal and emotive, helping the community process an unimaginable tragedy with sensitivity, clarity, and strong storytelling”.
