Four gongs for Times team The Coonabarabran Times has emerged as the most awarded newspaper at the 2025 Country Press NSW Awards of Excellence, taking home four major awards and one commendation at the statewide celebration of regional journalism.

The awa rds were announced at a gala dinner held in Yarrawonga on Friday, 24 October, marking the 125th anniversary of Country Press NSW. The Times was recognised for excellence across multiple disciplines — including w r iting, photog raphy and publishing — with wins i n B e s t M a g a z i n e/ Special Publ ication, Best Opinion/Editorial, Best Agricultural Photo and the inaugural Overall Photographic E xcellence awa rd.

The newspaper also received a commendation in Best Commercial Feature fo r i t s l o c a l d i n i n g s h owca s e ‘Tu ck I n’, published earlier this year.

Former Times employee and p h oto g ra p h e r, J e s s Richards claimed two of the night’s top honours for her image ‘Ready fo r Ha r vest’, fe a t u r i n g B a r a d i n e agronomist and farmer, Alexander Deans, and h i s daughte r O l ivia, standing in a field of wheat.

Judges praised the photog raph fo r its optimism, composition and ability to “highlight

the human story within the rural setting”.

J es s sa i d s h e wa s “lost for words” after the announcement.

“From chasing a harvest story through my lens to holding two photography awards in my hands — I am beyond proud,” Jess said.

“It means so much to see my work recognised. Thank you to Kait and Lynne at the Coonabarabran Times for giving me a chance to work for them.

“Congratulations to Kait and to the whole team on their wins and a massive thanks to the judges for the honour and feedback.”

Editor, Kait Britton, was awa rded Best Opinion/Editor ial for her moving piece ‘I Measure Ever y Gr ief I M e e t ’, w r i t t e n i n response to a tragedy that deeply affected the Coonabarabran community in May this year.

J udg es desc r i bed her work as “deeply personal and emotive, helping the community process an unimaginable tragedy with sensitivity, clarity, and strong storytelling”.

Coona Times team recognised FROM FRONT PAGE Kait said the words were written from a place of both heartbreak and responsibility.

“While it is wonderful to be acknowledged with this award, it is a difficult pill to swallow due to the sensitive content I was discussing,” Kait said.

“It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to write, but the words basically tumbled

out of me in the end.

“As a local journalist, I had a duty to report on the unfolding story, but as a mum of three young children who were confused and grieving, I also needed to help them, and our community, make sense of the tragedy.

“Those words came from that space of frustration, trying to be both professional and human.”

The Times also won

Best Magazine/Special Publication for wattle 4.0, praised by judges as “an outstanding example of a special publication” that combined beautiful design, stunning photography and thoughtful storytelling.

Kait said the recognition for wattle was especially meaningful.

“That edition was really a love letter to my Dad,” she said.

“He taught me everything I know about this business. I know he would be so proud of what we’ve achieved as a team — it’s just a little bittersweet that he’s not here to share it with us.”

Former editor Max Estens, who guided the paper for decades alongside managing director and wife Lynne, passed away in July this year.

Lynne said the

awards were a proud and humbling moment for the Times.

“To be recognised across such a range of categories shows the depth of talent, passion and teamwork behind our small, but mighty newsroom,” she said.

“But we couldn’t do any of it without the incredible support of our contributors, advertisers and readers — they are the real champions who keep local news alive.”

Tracks of tragedy Ninety years after one of the district’s worst accidents, the Coonabarabran and Baradine communities will gather to remember those who lost their lives in a horrific rail crossing collision.

O n 9 N o v em b e r 1935, at a railway level crossing twelve m i les f r om Coonabarabran, tragedy struck when a lorry carry ing 12 pe ople col l ided with the Mudgee-toBaradine train.

The impact occur red around 1pm, with the truck d ragged a long the line for 27 metres before being thrown aside.

Seven people were killed, including a baby and a sevenyear-old boy.

To mark the 9 0 th ann iversa r y of the disaster, the Baradine Rusty Club Inc. (the Rusty Men’s S he d ) i s e r e c t i n g a permanent monument to ensure this important and tragic event is never forgotten.

Memorial service A memorial service and plaque u nv e i l i n g w i l l b e held at t he c r a s h site on Old Baradine R oad at 1pm on Sunday, 9 November, 2025 – ninety years to the hour since the accident.

The service will be conducted by Father Karl Sinclair.

Anyone with f a m i ly t ie s t o t he victims, as well as local residents and friends, are warmly invited to attend and pay their respects.

Record crowd for Coona Cup The 2025 Imperial Hotel Coonabarabran Cup went off at full gallop on Sunday, drawing one of its biggest crowds yet and delivering a dazzling day of racing, fashion and fun.

by CLAUDIA HEANEY Racing on Sunday, 26 October, the 2025 Imperial Hotel Coonabarabran Cup has celebrated another successful year, drawing a huge crowd and delivering standout moments both on and off the track.

Racegoers travelled from as far as Wollongong and Queensland to attend the event, with the racecourse buzzing with new and familiar faces soaking up the race-day atmosphere.

Coonabarabran Jockey Club secretary, Lindsay Hawkins said the day exceeded expectations.

“The crowd was exceptional this year. Early estimates suggest 18 0 0 to 2 0 0 0 racegoers attended,” Lindsay said.

“The Cup is getting bigger each and every year.”

The racecourse and track were immaculate thanks to the tireless efforts of the Coonabarabran Jockey Club. Lindsay credited the optimal track conditions to club member, Kerry Vallette.

“The track was in amazing condition and held up very well to the day’s racing,” she said.

“Kudos to Kerry for the preparation.”

Lindsay said the atmosphere across the six-race program was electric.

“Our crowd had a wow of a time – ladies and gents looked fabulous in their fashions, kids were playing and, from all reports, there were a couple

of dances at the music area,” she said.

The event featured an array of exquisite outfits, with many featured in the Fashion on the Field competition, judged by Liliana Birch and Lachlan Cusack “Fashion on the Field was huge this year. The number of entrants in each category exceeded expectations,” Lindsay said.

Lindsay emphasised the preparation involved in putting together an exceptional race-day outfit.

“The time and effor t taken by people to enter these events is nothing to be sneezed at; sometimes months of planning are involved.”

Lindsay also acknowledged the dedication of volunteers and sponsors who make the event possible.

“Our volunteer base is amazing,” she said..

“The Coonabarabran Jockey Club thanks everyone who helped us on Sunday and in the months leading up. From mowing lawns, feeding our jockeys, decorating the grounds, selling beers and steak sandwiches – we could not run the event without their support.”

Lindsay said it was also the continual support from sponsors that keeps horses on the track three times a year.

“The support from sponsors is phenomenal and ensures the continuity of the club and the ability to continue running our three race meets annually.”

From birth to belonging: babies welcomed home Coonabarabran’s first-ever Welcome Babies on Gamilaraay Country ceremony was a heartwarming celebration of culture, community and new life.

by MOLLY SHANNON Families gathered at Nei l son Pa r k in Coonabarabran on Wednesday, 15 October to take pa r t i n the f i r st Welcome B abies B ack on Ga m i la raa y Cou nt r y ce rem ony — a celebration s t r e n g t h e n i n g connection to Country and continuing the cultural practices of the Gamilaraay people.

I n s p i red by B o u r ke H ea lth Se r v i ce’s Welcoming Baby Back to B ou r ke p rog ram, the i n itiative a i m s to br idge the cultural disconnection that can o ccu r w h e n fa m i l i e s must travel off Country to deliver their babies.

“The whole program began with a working par t y consisting of staff from Western NSW Local Health D ist r ict, Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Land Counci l (L ALC) s taf f, Elders and community r e p r e s e nta t i ve s w h o spent months planning the program, as it was the first one ever held in Coonabarabran,” said Coonabarabran LALC chief executive officer, Brandon Nixon.

“Once the program was planned and participants confirmed, a cultural workshop was held by Aunty Suellyn Tighe,” Mr Nixon said.

“This workshop provided par ticipants with information on the program and allowed sharing of information

rega rd i ng t rad itiona l birthing practices.”

O n the day, Aunt y S u e l l y n l e d m ot h e r s and babies in a special ceremony, beginning p r i vate l y u nd e r th e Mary Jane Cain Bridge before leading the group through Neilson Park.

A private ‘Women’s B u s i n es s’ ce re m o ny w a s h e l d p r i o r to a community celebration where Elders, babies and mothers were formally welcomed back.

Participants received a certificate, tote bag, enamel cup featuring original artwork, white ochre and spring water as keepsakes representing Gamilaraay Country.

“Once the ceremony was completed a feed was put on for everyone — food always brings us together!” Mr Nixon said.

Twelve families took pa r t, with many describing the experience as powerful and emotional.

“It was fantastic,” said mother, Tori Anderson.

“It was an emotional journey 100 per cent. I haven’t ex pe r ienced anything like that before — it was really nice to connect with culture and reconnect my son, River, back to his land.”

For Suellyn, keeping culture alive and sharing traditional knowledge was deeply meaningful.

“In a lot of ways it is healing, because when you go and do other ceremonies and you do women’s groups where you make headbands and do weaving, that’s

all great — but to come back on Countr y and bring that knowledge here to share, I think that’s what this is about...it’s about sharing,” Ms Tighe said.

“So, to be asked to have that role and to be asked to sha re knowledge is truly, truly honouring and it makes you feel good in your soul.

“The mothers make the headbands to connect the baby, and then you have the connection with an Elder who p l a ces th e och re o n the baby and wraps the possum skin around the pulse point — it brings connection through all of those avenues, bringing everyone together in a special place.”

The event was strongly suppor ted by the community.

“The day was perfect – we could not have asked for a better day for this to be held,” Mr Nixon said.

“None of this could have gone ahead without the support of our community.”

Mr Nixon said he hoped the program would now become an yearly event.

“We have committed to make this program run annually,” he said. “ We’ve a l s o b e e n asked about ho l d i ng ce remon ies fo r o lde r kids and Elders, so we’ll determine a plan to cater for our community.”

Wester n NSW Lo ca l H e a l t h D i s t r i ct Aboriginal health p ra c t i t i o n e r, N a re l l e Andrews, who helped create the program in

Coonabarabran, said she was extremely proud of the outcome. “ T h i s p ro g ra m wa s inspired by the work of the Western NSW Local Health District and, in particular, the beautiful and successful project by Bourke Health Service,” Mrs Andrews said.

“These community-led events celebrate babies’ connection to ancestral

lands and reinforce the importance of identity from the very beginning of life.

“T h i s i n it i at i ve a l so responds to a deeper n eed fo r h ea l i ng, a s many Aboriginal families are unable to have their babies born on Country due to limitations within the NSW health system.

“This ceremony is a way to begin healing

meaningful opportunity to reconnect with their local community, celebrate their child’s bi r th in a cultu ral ly i ncl us i ve s pace, a nd build relationships with other families.

“This ceremony is not only a celebration – it’s a statement of resilience, belonging and the en d u r i n g s t ren gth of Aboriginal culture.”

New biodiversity finds in the Pilliga First Nations leaders, scientists and researchers joined forces for a two-week Bush Blitz biodiversity survey on Gamilaraay, Gamilaroi and Gomeroi Countries in the Pilliga – the largest remnant semi-arid woodland in the state.

The survey, which ran from 22 September to 3 October 2025, explored a biodiverse landscape home to some 900 species of plants, 50 reptiles, at least 15 frogs and 18 bat species, including listed threatened species. The expedition aimed to build a better understanding of the r eg ion’s sp e c ie s a nd identify those requiring further protection.

Brandon Nixon, CEO of Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Land Council, said it was a pleasu re t o host the B u s h B l i t z t e a m at Burra Bee Dee and the Ukerbarley Aboriginal A rea, shar ing local h i s t o r y a nd f i nd i n g species new to science that were prev iously unknown to the community.

“Our team gained new k nowledge a nd ideas from spending time with the scientists and we look forward to seeing wh at e l s e h a s b e e n discovered throughout our Traditional lands,” Mr Nixon said. “ Pa r tner sh ips l i ke this don’t happen every day and we are grateful for the chance to be a pa r t of the prog ram.

Trevor Wilson, s y s t e m at i c b o t a n i s t at B o t a n i c G a r d e n s o f S y d n e y, s a i d t h e organisation was proud to be part of this annual effort to increase knowledge of Australia’s remarkable biodiversity. “ Bush Blitz has c ol l e c t e d t h o u s a nd s of new or undescribed native spe cies over the past 16 years,” Mr Wilson said.

Following the completion of fieldwork, the Pilliga Bush Blitz team is now a na lysi ng spe ci mens a nd data col lected across the 5000 square kilometre survey area.

Scientists are working collaboratively to identify species, confirm new f indings, and compile comprehensive biodiversity records that will be made publicly

available th rough national databases.

These findings will be shared with Traditional Owners, land managers, conser vation g roups, and the broader scienti f ic commun ity to inform future

protection strateg ies for the Pilliga’s unique ecosystems.

T he data w i l l a lso contr ibut e t o Bush Blitz’s g rowing national dataset, which continues to reshape understanding of

Australia’s biodiversity a nd g u ide ev idenc e based conser vation de c i sion s ac r o s s t he continent.

The Bush Blitz program is the world’s l a r g e s t bi o d i v e r s it y su r vey pr og ra m a nd

has recorded more than 2,054 putative species new to science from all states and territories.

AROUND THE SCHOOLS Tooraweenah Public PSSA Athletics Championships We are thrilled to a nnounce that Billy Larkin, our talented eight-year-old boys’ 100-metres sprinter, competed brilliantly at the PSSA Athletics Championship held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre.

Billy raced in heat two and clocked a personalbest time of 14.693 seconds, advancing confidently to the semifinals.

In the semi-finals, Billy competed strongly in lane one of heat one, finishing 11th overall in the state – just 0.03 seconds shy of making the finals. This incredible effort places Billy among the top young sprinters in NSW! Our entire school community showed outstanding spirit by

cheering Billy on and watching the livestream together. We are extremely proud of Billy’s dedication, speed, and sportsmanship.

Technology This term, our students from Kindergarten to Year 6 have been unleashing their creativity during Friday technology lessons by designing and making personalised name tags for their school bags using a 3D printer. Under the expert guidance of our wonderful volunteer, Petria Cameron, the students have enjoyed hands-on learning that combines art, design, and technology.

I’ve been on the road in the electorate of Parkes over the past couple of weeks, which has only confirmed to me the importance of connections and good transport between our towns and cities.

When you live in a remote or regional area, you have to travel. It’s a fact of life. You have to travel for medical appointments, business reasons, fami ly events and so many othe r reasons.

This is one of the reasons why it is so important to ensure we have reliable and sustainable airline services.

The recent news that there is a United States buyer for regional airline, Rex could be good news, but it is very early in the process, and there are many questions to be answered.

This is more than just a business for people in regional NSW. It is a lifeline. The issue of regional airlines is much wider than just Rex. We need this airline as we need the others that are currently operating in regional areas – to provide the number and regularity of services that are required.

I w i l l be keep i ng a cl ose eye on th i s development to see exactly what it will mean for people who live in regional NSW. Another absolute necessity in the electorate of Parkes are reliable regional roads.

I have spoken before – both in Chaffey’s Corner and in Parliament – about the decline in the Federal Government’s commitment to funding for regional roads. It has been in a steep decline for the past three years.

During the time of this Federal Government, the road infrastr ucture back log figure has blown out to an average of $236.7 million a year across the Parkes electorate, according to NRMA figures.

T h a t i s a n i n c re a s e of m o re t h a n 2 5 0 % in the electorate in the years of this Labor Government.

been knocked back for about $150 million of the funding they have sought to fix roads damaged by disasters in the past three years.

That is a massive amount of money for our small councils to find just to restore their roads networks to the same standards.

Safe and rel iab l e roads a ren’t a l ux u r y.

They are an absolute necessity for regional Australians.

The Albanese Government’s plan to find an answer to substandard roads by telling regional people to drive more slowly is laughable. Labor Minister Catherine King is proposing reducing speed limits on dirt, gravel or sealed roads in need of repair.

It is unreasonable and unfair to again put the burden on the people of the Parkes electorate to make up for the government’s lack of support for regional New South Wales.

In the past couple of weeks, I have been to Moree for the opening of a new Westpac service centre; I have been to the ORISCON C ro s s Cu l t u ra l F e s t i va l i n D u b b o, h e l p e d celebrate 100 years of the Royal Far West in Dubbo; I have talked to Broken Hill City Council, the Rural Doctors’ Network and a number of other organisations about the potential for improvement to health services in Broken Hill; talked to Wilcannia residents about the future of the weir; and had more meetings in Narromine and Parkes.

It’s time to go back to Parliament for two weeks and then I look for ward to being out and about in the electorate again, including for the presentation of the Member for Parkes Vocational Student awa rd in a number of schools.

Brisbane, like Sydney, has recorded its warmest October in over 160 years of records; the meanmaximum temperature of 29.3 degrees was more than three degrees above normal.

The previous warmest October was 28.8 degrees in 2013, while October of 1988 was a shade lower at 28.3 degrees.

The summer of 201314 was very hot – the hottest weather was the first week of January with 44 degrees at Coona, but heavy rain fell in mid February 2014.

The summer of 198889 was also warmer, but heavy rain fell in December 1988 and again in early February in Coona.

The past week the ma in w e a t h e r e v e n t was the heavy rainfalls at some places in the interior of Western Australia, which had occurred after weeks of very hot conditions of over 40 degrees and record heat for October at a few places.

Giles recorded 64mms to last Saturday morning, 25 October. This was the wettest October day at Giles in 60 years of records, surpassing the 41.4mms in October 2011. The monthly total

at Giles has reached 87mms, the wettest for October since 98mms in 1975. Other Octobers with high rainfalls were in 1974 and 1999.

Eucla recorded 35mms last Saturday morning, taking its October rainfall to 92mms, making this the wettest-ever October in 140 years of records at Eucla, surpassing the 1904 record of 73mms.

Eucla also recorded 41.5 degrees a week beforehand. Hotter October days there were in 1977, 1987, 1990 and 1998 .

Past events of high rainfalls in October in the interior of WA very often bring significant rainfalls to places in Victoria and in NSW within 48 hours.

Some places in Victoria have received moderate to heavy falls.

Melbourne recorded 33mms during last Sunday, the wettest day for late October since 41mms on 27 October 1978.

Most of NSW only recorded light to moderate rainfalls.

Very often there is a second burst of heavy rain and storms about a week or so later, well into November. This time, NSW getting heavier rainfall as well

as Victoria, easing the prolonged dryness since last winter.

After all that heavy rainfall Sydney has had most of this year right up to the second week of September, it has become unbelievably warmer and drier than average during October.

It will be the warmest October, with a meanmaximum temperature of 27.6 degrees in 166 years of records. The previous warmest October was 26.2 degrees in 1988 and 25.7 in 2013.

The total rainfall in Sydney this month was only 5mms, the driest since 0.6mms in 1988.

Birdsville, with 46.1 degrees last week, and Bourke, with 44.8 degrees (the highest temperature ever recorded in NSW), both had their hottest October day on record, the hottest for October being in 1898, 1958, 1988 and 1995. This will ensure a very hot summer, particularly in Victoria , but wetter in November and again in December.

After a hot start in November in Victoria and NSW, heavy rain and thunderstorms will arrive during the second week and again during the fourth week.

More heavy rain second week of December and around Christmas, then again in February and March. The hottest period next summer being the first week of January, with highest temperature reaching 44 degrees.

Coona Public crowned bowls’ champions Coonabarabran Public School has taken top honours at the first-ever Primary Schools Inter-School Bowls Championships, held at Club Dubbo on Sunday, 26 October.

Played on Sunday, 26 October, Club Dubbo was the venue for the staging of the first Primary Schools ‘inter-school’ Bowls Championships.

The event attracted Year 5 and 6 students from Parkes, Coonabarabran and Dubbo schools.

The team of Mia Bowman, Sierra Denny and Lew i s B row n, f rom Coonaba rab ran Pub l i c School, was undefeated during the five rounds and through the semi-final ‘shoot-out’.

The final against Parkes Christian School was exciting, with Coonabarabran declared the ‘Champion School’ for 2025.

CHICKEN RUN Sunday, 26 October The Coonabarabran G o l f C lu b ’s S u n d ay morning chicken run was played over the front nine on 26 October.

In her fi rst year competing at the event, Siarne Davis has proven her dedication and talent to go the distance in her sporting career, however, she credited her success to the encouragement received from those around her.

“I was quite happy with my performance overall,” Siarne said.

“I received support from family, coaches a nd th e co m m u n it y members who encouraged me and d o n ate d s o I co u l d attend the event.

“The community has

b e e n s o s u p p o r t i ve of my achievements at th e event. T h i s i s the most support I’ve eve r got f rom the co m m u n i t y a n d I ’m really appreciative.”

S i a r n e’ s s p o r t i n g goals are not limited

by Australia’s borders, with hopes to compete in Asia next year.

“My next major goal will be to qualify and compete at the Virtus Oceania Asia games in Bangkok,” she said.

Until then, Siarne is keeping busy, preparing fo r the N SW Open and the Austral ian National Athletics

Championships.

Juggling universit y and her athletic ambitions, Siarne is driven to push herself fur ther – not only to achieve her own aspi rations, but in honou r of her late cousin.

“I am motivated to keep doing better for myself and push myself to do the best I can. I want to carry my cousin Ky l e Tu r ne r’s l egacy through my own sport,” Siarne said.

“That pushes me to ach ieve the h ighest level I can.”

VETERANS’ GOLF Tuesday, 21 October Eleven veteran golfers took part in the third leg of the John Walker Trophy, which was held in very hot weather at the Coonabarabran Golf Club on Tuesday, 21 October.

The best on the day was John Wood with a

net 31. Runner-up was Kevin James with a net 32.

Nearest to the pins went to Mick Noy, Bob Guichelaar and Dick Clark, while John Davis won the long putt.

Jockey makes Coona Cup history Apprentice jockey, Siena Grima has made history at the 2025 Imperial Hotel Coonabarabran Cup, winning five consecutive races – including the coveted Cup itself.

Siena’s riding agent and ex-jockey, Craig Rixon said he couldn’t recall another apprentice winning five races – especially three feature events. “ I r e ca l l s o m e g o o d apprentices in the centralwest distr ict, but to do what Siena has done is outstanding,” he said.

Her performance places her amongst the l i kes of co u nt r y ra ci n g stars such as Greg Ryan, who won six consecutive races, and Tony Cavallo, who claimed five.

Rixon attributes Siena’s ear ly success in her career to her mindset and determination to reach the top. “ S i e n a i s ve r y l eve l headed. She is hard working and determined to be the best,” he said.

“She listens to everything and puts it into practice.

She just takes it and runs with it,” Rixon said.

“It has been ver y rewarding as an ex-jockey to see Siena do so well; she is very deserving.”

Siena has been apprenticed to Melanie O’Gorman for less than t wo yea r s. Not even half way through her apprenticeship, Siena has proven to have what it takes to go the distance as a jockey.

“She won Countr y Apprentice of the Year in 2024. She is now aiming to claim Leading Apprentice in the Provincials this year,” Rixon said.

History of Gabo wheat variety celebrated A field day and book launch has marked the 80th anniversary of the naming of the Gabo wheat variety.

The University of Sydney and Gunnedah Shire Council co-hosted the festivities, held at the former university site near Gunnedah and later at the town hall.

Among the attendees were descendants of the original families, university and shire representatives, and the Governor of NSW. The Gabo name continues, with the site now owned by local farmers Tim and Mandy Gavin under the 'Gabo' name.

Gabo was a ground-breaking wheat variety that has benefitted farmers, researchers, rural communities and cities.

Its history has been extensively documented in the book written

by Honorary Associate Professor Dr Lindsay O’Brien and Emeritus Professor Dr Peter Sharp.

The Australian wheat industry was in dire straits during the 1930s. The period of the Great Depression resulted in high production costs and low wheat prices threatening the viability of wheat growing. The Commonwealth established a Royal Commission to investigate the financial viability, marketing system and the quality of the crop. Marketing of the crop was a state-based responsibility and was based on the Fair Average Quality (F.A.Q) system.

All wheat from each year’s crop was binned together and a new F.A.Q. standard created each year. Growers were not paid a

premium for high quality wheat.

Soft-grained varieties with weak dough properties and poor bread making quality dominated

production. While they performed well for growers, they were troublesome for the milling and baking industries.

Consumers were missing out by not having access to good quality bread.

North West newspapers honoured Member newspapers of Country Press NSW gathered to celebrate the 2025 Awards of Excellence, at a joint conference event hosted in conjunction with the Victorian Country Press Association.

A gala dinner for 170 guests was held at the Sebel Resort at Yarrawonga to help commemorate the 125th anniversary of the founding of the NSW association at nearby Corowa. Newspapers from the North West again featured prominently in the awards ceremony.

The major guest-of-honour was NSW Minister for Agriculture, Regional NSW and Western NSW, Tara Moriarty, and a highlight of the evening was the awarding of life membership to retiring NSW President Lucie Peart and former Corowa Free Press proprietor, Noel Loughnan.

In the Awards of Excellence, the Coonabarabran Times was a major winner, taking home four awards, including Best Special Publication/ Magazine. Times photographer Jess Richards won Best Agricultural Photo and the inaugural Overall Photographic Excellence award, while Times editor Kait Britton was judged the winner of Best Opinion.

In the overall category for paid newspapers with a print run under 700 copies weekly, the Narromine Star racked its second successive win, and Star reporter Sophia McCaughan was also Young Journalist of the Year.

The Narrabri Courier was awarded Best Paid Newspaper (more than 700 copies). It was the third time the newspaper had received the association’s top honour in four years.

At the AGM, Lucie Peart, of the Gilgandra Weekly, officially retired after eight years, the longest run of any president in the association’s history. Edward Higgins of the Cowra Guardian was elected as the next NSW president, while Mark Griggs, Wellington & District Leader, will serve as the next NSW Vice-President. Dylan Smith, of The Courier, was among the members elected to the association’s council.

Three charged with more than 250 offences after investigation into alleged drug supply in Moree Police news Three people have been charged with a total of 259 offences following two search warrants.

In July 2025, officers attached to New England Police District established Strike Force Bullshark 2 to investigate and disrupt the alleged supply of prohibited drugs in the Moree area.

Following extensive inquiries, about 6am on Tuesday, October 21, investigators executed a search warrant at a home on Oak Street, Moree.

During a search of the residence, officers allegedly located and seized approximately 26.87

grams of methylamphetamine, $2812.45 in cash, a Taser, an extendable baton, ammunition, multiple vapes and other items.

Two men, aged 41 and 22, and a 32-year-old woman, were arrested on scene and taken to Moree Police Station.

Just after 11am, a second search warrant was executed at a business at Balo Street, Moree, during which $8000 in cash, alleged to be the proceeds of crime, was seized.

The older man was charged with 141 offences including supply prohibited drug, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, knowingly direct activities of criminal group, possess or use a prohibited weapon

without permit.

The woman was charged with 107 offences including supply prohibited drugs on an ongoing basis and knowingly direct activities of criminal group.

The younger man was charged with 11 offences including six counts of supply prohibited drug, participate criminal group contribute criminal, take part supply prohibited drug, supply prohibited drugs on an ongoing basis, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, and recklessly deal with proceeds of crime less than equal to $5000.

They were all refused bail and appeared before Bail Division Court 5 on Wednesday, October 22.

Water price review Gabo wheat variety milestone marked at field day, book launch Continued from front page

Two factors associated with soft wheat compounded the problem for the milling and baking industries. Firstly, soft wheat is difficult to mill into flour. They must be fed into the mill rolls at a slower rate and sifting the flour takes longer. Starch granules that make up the bulk of flour are not fractured during milling, so the flour takes longer to sieve, increasing the costs of milling. Secondly, for the baker, soft wheat flour takes up less water when the flour is mixed with water into a dough. This results in less loaves per ton of flour and the quality of the resultant bread is poor because the flour lacks the quality of strength.

Growers faced the yearly uncertainty posed by seasonal climate variability. Optimistically, they looked forward to the better rainfall years, as they deliver higher grain yields and better farm returns. However, in northern NSW and southern Queensland, such years favoured the development of the fungal disease stem rust which severely reduced grain yield, farm returns and produced grain with reduced milling and baking quality.

Stem rust has threatened wheat growing since the days of European settlement. Pioneer wheat breeder William Farrer attempted to breed rust resistant varieties but his efforts resulted in earlier flowering varieties such as the variety Federation (1901) rather than them being resistant.

The earlier flowering enabled the growing area to move inland to more arid environments that are less favourable for rust development.

Walter Waterhouse commenced his wheat rust studies at the University of Sydney in 1922 with the goal of developing stem rust resistant varieties. His first two resistant varieties Fedweb and Hofed were named and released in 1938. Development of them would not have been possible without the support of his former Hawkesbury Agricultural College classmate, Charles Henry Beeson who had settled on the land at “Leyburn”

west of Gunnedah in 1908. Beeson provided land, his time and that of his farm workers to plant, maintain, take observations and to harvest breeding plots using his farm machinery.

Fedweb and Hofed never became big production varieties but they proved it was possible to breed stem rust resistant varieties. By 1933, Waterhouse had a F2 generation population of the cross of Bobin/Gaza/Bobin where rust resistant plants were selected at Hawkesbury Agricultural College.

Later generations were planted and selected at Hawkesbury and on Beeson’s property west of Gunnedah. Waterhouse was seeking to capture the drought attributes from the durum parent Gaza, so one generation at Leyburn was planted on a special harsh piece of ground. After region wide testing by growers and Departments of Agriculture for yield and internationally for rust resistance, this population gave rise to the variety that was named Gabo in 1945.

Seed production of Gabo was conducted by Claude Hathway on his property Woodleigh. Starting in 1940 with just 55 grains he had increased this to 2753 bags of seed by the end of 1945. Gabo quickly became the most widely grown variety in northern NSW. By 1954

it was the most widely grown variety of Australia. It was a foundation variety of the International Green Revolution and later Gabo genes returned to Australia as parents for Australian breeding in varieties bred overseas in the Green Revolution .

Gabo was popular with growers because its rust resistance combined the good agronomic attributes of high yield, short and strong straw, early maturity and ease of harvest. Its hard grain was a boon for flour millers and its flour produced more loaves per ton of flour for bakers. The consumer won by having access to good quality bread.

The dominance of poor-quality soft wheat had flour millers offering payments to growers to encourage them to grow lower yielding hard-grained wheat they could blend to improve milling and baking quality. Millers soon started offering premiums to growers for higher protein content parcels of Gabo. Discontent amongst growers in differences in premium payments for what they knew was the same quality wheat, had growers band together and the Premium Wheat Growers Association formed in northern NSW. Police reappeal for information after body discovered in burnt out vehicle Police news Police are reappealing for assistance from the public as inquires continue into the discovery of a body in a burnt-out vehicle in the state’s north west last month.

Emergency services were called to the Kamilaroi Highway, Brewarrina, 100km east of Bourke, about 5.15am on Sunday, September 28, when an SUV was found alight.

A body was found inside the vehicle once the fire had been extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW. A crime scene was established and an investigation commenced under Strike Force Mayville, comprising of detectives from Central North Police District and the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad.

Following inquiries, on Thursday, October

16, police attached to Central North Police District executed two crime scene warrants at separate premises located within Barwon Four Reserve Brewarrina and seized a number of items which will be subject to further examination.

Central North PD crime manager Detective Inspector Andrew Barnes said due to the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body, police are treating the death as suspicious.

“We have identified the deceased person and notified their next-of-kin, but we are appealing to the public to come forward if they have information which could be relevant to this investigation,” Det Insp Barnes said.

“Anyone with information they believe can assist police is urged to contact Bourke Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

Change gathered momentum and pressure from grower organisations across the country brought about change to the marketing system. Grades based on variety and protein content best suited to the range end-products made from Australian wheat replaced the F.A.Q. So successful was the transformation started by Gabo, that there have been no yield losses from stem rust in northern NSW and southern Queensland since 1964.

The domestic milling and baking industry predominantly uses hard-grained wheat varieties. The export market which accounts for the sale of up to 80 per cent of annual production successfully competes in the international trading market. It does this by having grades based on differences in variety with their intrinsic quality attributes, segregated and binned according to variation in protein content driven by regional and seasonal differences. These changes were all initiated by the development and subsequent popularity of Gabo across the value chain after it was named in 1945.

Following sustained advocacy from the NSW Irrigators’ Council, IPART has started a wholesale review of the WaterNSW rural water pricing and cost-sharing structure.

Last week, IPART launched stakeholder consultation on WaterNSW rural valleys water pricing to take effect from July 1, 2026. As part of this process, IPART will closely examine how to restructure the current pricing model that threatens to price farmers out of business and keep local produce off supermarket shelves.

“NSWIC and its members have consistently advocated for a wholesale pricing review of WaterNSW,” said NSWIC CEO, Dr Madeleine Hartley. “We are pleased to see that recommendation adopted, paving the way for a thorough review that can help ensure fair and affordable water access for irrigators.

“In June 2025, water users were hit with an 8.3 per cent price rise across most NSW rural valleys – the latest in a long-running trend of escalating charges.

“This increase is another heavy burden for farmers already grappling with soaring input costs, high interest rates, and the ongoing impacts of floods and drought.”

Analysis by IPART reveals WaterNSW operating base costs per unit of water entitlement are growing, with a 49 per cent increase in the ten-year period between 2014-15 and 2024-25. Since 2017, WaterNSW has exceeded its capital and operational expenditure allowances set by IPART and many of its projects lack business cases or a cost-benefit analysis.

“WaterNSW revenue requirements are ballooning faster than the capacity of its customers to pay more. This is not a sustainable business model by any measure.

Cost sharing arrangements must be reviewed and cost-drivers assessed,” Dr Hartley said.

“IPART has rightly recognised that access to safe, reliable and affordable water at a fair price is critical to rural communities, the environment and the economy.

IPART’s review and consultation plan is a step in the right direction to ensure this is the case.”

NSWIC is hopeful that IPART will adopt a similar approach towards the Water Administration Ministerial Corporation in its 2028 review.

Look after your child’s teeth with subsidised care in NSW Health NSW Health is encouraging families in regional and rural areas of New South Wales to make sure they are taking advantage of the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS).

The CDBS, which started in 2014, is a national program that provides eligible children with a capped benefit for basic dental services.

Up to $1,132 in benefits over two calendar years can be accessed per child, covering most general dental services.

A child may be eligible for this benefit if they have a Medicare card, are aged 0 to 17 years, and they are part of a family that receives Family Tax Benefit Part A or the child receives an Australian Government payment.

The CDBS can be used at most private dentists, public dental clinics, NSW Health school-based dental services, and some Aboriginal community-based health organisations.

Looking after your child’s teeth through regular dental check-ups is important for your child’s wellbeing, and is always a priority for NSW Health.

So even if a child is not eligible for CDBS, uses up their full CDBS amount or needs treatment that isn’t covered by the schedule, there are still no costs for care at NSW public dental clinics.

New Quirindi pool to reopen in November The new Quirindi Aquatic Centre is nearing completion, with Liverpool Plains Shire Council confirming the facility will open for the upcoming 2025/26 summer season in November.

Mayor Ken Cudmore said the facility, which has been in development for several years, is scheduled to be handed over to council once it has achieved practical completion, before welcoming the public for the first time from November 22.

“The Quirindi Aquatic Centre is one of the most significant infrastructure projects delivered by Liverpool Plains Shire Council in recent years, and this it the

result of several years of planning and community consultation to designing a quality facility that will serve our region’s needs well into the future,” Cr Cudmore said. “We are incredibly grateful for the patience and support of our community as Beau Corp Projects has worked to complete this project, and we’re very proud of what we’ve been able to achieve.”

Council’s general manager Cian Middleton, said while most of the aquatic centre is completed, landscaping works will be undertaken over the coming weeks at the front of the facility to improve accessibility.

LNCGA celebrates cotton success stories The Lower Namoi Cotton Growers Association recently celebrated the outstanding achievements of local growers and industry members at a LNCGA Golf Day and Cotton Awards.

“It was a fantastic day to connect, celebrate, and acknowledge the hard work and success across our region,” said Nathan Hamblin, LNCGA chair.
