Visitors flock to Coona for StarFest events The windy mountaintop weather wasn’t enough to deter the crowd of curious minds that enjoyed this year’s Siding Spring Observatory Open Day on Saturday, 1 October, with families travelling from the ACT and Victoria to attend the annual StarFest event.

Fol low i ng the eve rp o p u l a r Sc i e n ce i n t h e Pu b eve n i n g o n F r i d a y, locals and visitors enjoyed behind-the-scenes tours of several telescopes around the site including the AngloAustralian Telescope (AAT). Other telescopes that were open to the public i ncl uded the Aus t ra l ian National University (ANU) 2.3m Telescope, iTelescope and the new ly unvei led Huntsman Telescope. Those who weren’t afraid of heights were able to take a walk along the catwalk of the A AT and enjoy a spectacular view of the Warrumbungle Mountains. Though the visit to the obse r vato r y was du r i ng the day, visitors enjoyed an amazing view of the night sky in the 360-degree

A barbecue lunch was available from Rotary, with a range of other tasty treats and beverages available f ro m Pi l l i g a Pot te r y, L i l’ Coffee Cart and the Lodge Café. After lunch, the David A l l en Tra i l l ead i ng f ro m the lodge up to Trig Point was of f icially opened, w h i c h wa s fo l l owe d by a traditional Smoking Ceremony. The Bok Lecture started at 2 . 3 0 p m w i t h s p e c i a l guest speaker, Professor Susan Scott who presented ‘Su r f ing G ravitational Waves to Probe the Dark Side of the Universe.’ The day provided something fo r eve r yone and was certainly a day well enjoyed by all who attended.
