When the Governor comes to town... Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of New South Wales and her husband, Mr Dennis Wilson, recently completed a five-day tour exploring rural NSW, including a highly anticipated visit to Coonabarabran. by MOLLY SHANNON Her Excellency visited the Narromine, War ren, Coonamble a n d Wa r r u m b u n g l e Shires as par t of the regional tour. H o w e v e r, i t i s n’ t the first time that Her Excellency has been to Coonabarabran. “Many many years ago, I came to Coonabarabran,” the Governor said. “In fact, I brought my parents and children
o u t h e r e fo r a t r i p many years ago, but I haven’t been back since, and I certainly haven’t been here in an official capacity.” The Gover no r was sworn-in during 2019 a n d s i n ce t h e n h e r ti me the s tate ha s experienced bushfires, COVID-19, floods and drought. This has had a direct impact on the Governor’s ability to conduct outreach
programs such as this most recent one, which, Her Excellency said was disappointing. “We try to get out to the regions about eight or nine times a year, just depending on what else is happening in a year of course, and when we do come out we like to stay for three to four days and we like to focus on a whole range of communities,” she said. “A s G o v e r n o r , I
s h o u l d h a ve a re a l understanding of the peop l e of ou r s tate and, I think, have a connection with them. “What we have found is with our regional visits, sometimes people feel sepa rated f ro m th e city and from where the Government is and where the bureaucracy is. “To be able to come and just say to people, ‘we think you’re very
impor tant’, makes a difference.” The Governor often has a few port of calls when she visits, such as schools, health services, councils and producers. “The local council is the hub of everything and we f i nd it both important and i nte re s t i n g to m e et them beca use th ey give us an overview of what’s going on.
