When the Governor comes to town...

Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of New South Wales and her husband, Mr Dennis Wilson, recently completed a five-day tour exploring rural NSW, including a highly anticipated visit to Coonabarabran.

H o w e v e r, i t i s n’ t the first time that Her Excellency has been to Coonabarabran.

“Many many years ago, I came to Coonabarabran,” the Governor said.

“In fact, I brought my parents and children

o u t h e r e fo r a t r i p many years ago, but I haven’t been back since, and I certainly haven’t been here in an official capacity.”

The Gover no r was sworn-in during 2019 a n d s i n ce t h e n h e r ti me the s tate ha s experienced bushfires, COVID-19, floods and drought.

This has had a direct impact on the Governor’s ability to conduct outreach

programs such as this most recent one, which, Her Excellency said was disappointing.

“We try to get out to the regions about eight or nine times a year, just depending on what else is happening in a year of course, and when we do come out we like to stay for three to four days and we like to focus on a whole range of communities,” she said.

“A s G o v e r n o r , I

s h o u l d h a ve a re a l understanding of the peop l e of ou r s tate and, I think, have a connection with them.

“What we have found is with our regional visits, sometimes people feel sepa rated f ro m th e city and from where the Government is and where the bureaucracy is.

“To be able to come and just say to people, ‘we think you’re very

impor tant’, makes a difference.”

The Governor often has a few port of calls when she visits, such as schools, health services, councils and producers.

“The local council is the hub of everything and we f i nd it both important and i nte re s t i n g to m e et them beca use th ey give us an overview of what’s going on.

EDITORIAL

“I measure every Grief I meet” Emily Dickinson wrote about death and grief and hope. Coonabarabran Times editor, Kait Britton, also writes about death and grief and hope, but her words are not poetry – it’s reality.

by KAIT BRITTON I’ve found myself at a bit of a crossroads – wanting to write an editorial piece about the tragedy that gripped Coonabrabran i n e a r l y M a y, w h i l e also wondering if I am qualified enough to do so.

I haven’t been able to fully ar ticulate the sense of shock, sadness and collective confusion that rippled throughout the community at the passing of young brothers, Max and Sam, allegedly at the hands of their grandmother and sole carer.

T h e h u s h e d conversations away from ‘little ears’, the heavy hugs at the school gate, the reassuring text messages, the questions that remain.

I’m not certain that I will ever be able to evoke such unspeakable, yet palpable grief on the page.

Maybe this one just hits too close to home.

Do I write about the days?

The 53 achingly long days that have passed since two local children had their lives cruelly ripped away?

The birthday parties

and school events they have m issed?

A n e x c u r s i o n to t h e Warrumbungles, dressing up as mad scientists.

Thei r yellow belt grading at karate class?

The cool dance moves they could have learnt and nailed in the past seven weeks?

And all the wonderful milestones of youth and adolescence that lay ahead, now relegated to what could have been.

What should have been.

Do I write about the people?

The ones inevitably left behind to pick up the pieces.

The neighbours. Having to drive past the scene of such horror each and every day, while teddy bears ironically signpost the road to violence.

The teacher s and support staff, and the pure love and kindness they showed the boys.

My heart aches for them.

The local cops who were first on the scene – do they have young children? How do they work through that mental load?

The kids. Oh how I feel for the kids.

Trying to make sense of this terrible tragedy is like trying to get blood from

Unsightly Commonwealth Bank I am writing to express my disappointment regarding the current state of the Commonwealth Bank building in Coonabarabran.

At the beg i n n i ng of June, graffiti – including various rude images – was sprayed across the building. Now, a full month later, the mess remains untouched. This is not only unsightly, but sends a poor message to the many visitors and tourists who pass through our town, as well as to the local community who take pride in its appearance.

W hat ma kes th is i naction even more frustrating is that the Commonwealth Bank reported a staggering $27.13 billion AUD in revenue for the financial year ending June 30, 2024. Surely, timely maintenance and upkeep of such a prominent building should not be too much to ask.

In addition to the lack of action on the graffiti, the Coonabarabran

branch continues to operate on limited hours – just three and a half hours a day. This is highly inconvenient for those who rely on face-to-face banking, often resulting in long wait times and unnecessary frustration.

T h e c o m mu n i t y d e s e r v e s better. A swift response to the vandalism and a reconsideration of branch opening hours would go a long way in demonstrating that Commonwealth Bank values its rural customers and their experience.

A t t h i s p oi nt i n t i me my only advice to these persons, and to other persons who are experiencing similar increases in their water bills, is to write a letter to the general manager of the Warrumbungle Shire Council, requesting a written response of explanation of the increase.

Hand deliver the letter to the front office of the Council, make a note of the date of the delivery, also a note of the time and the name of the person to whom delivered.

Keep a copy of the letter.

Also, hand deliver a copy to the front office for the mayor.

I am prepared to assist writing suggested letters. It would be good to see two full pages of the Coona Times with letters to the editor regarding overcharged water bills and/or any other past or present unresolved problems.

The stone is still a stone.

Two boys still lie in two tiny white coffins and no one can understand why.

If an adult has difficulty in wrapping their heads around what has u nfo l d ed, th en w h at hope in hell does a sixyear-old have?

How can these pintsized humans even begin to comprehend why their friend no longer sits across from them in class?

Why their birthday is still scrawled on the calendar in the classroom? Forever seven.

Emily Dickinson wrote a lot about mortality and harnessed poetry as a way to help her grapple with grief.

“I measure every Grief I meet With narrow, probing, eyes – I wonder if It weighs like Mine – Or has an Easier size.”

We’ve all felt the loss of this horrific event in some form or fashion. Big grief.

Little grief. Compounding grief. There’s no one size fits all cloak of sadness.

Pe r h a p s o u r brains aren’t wired to comprehend such horrific events on a scale like this. But it is important to remember that what took place in Coonabarabran on Monday, 5 May 2025 is not normal.

Nothing about this, is normal. And if that type of situation ever starts to fe e l n o r m a l, t h e n someth i ng i n he rentl y human is broken.

Do I write about the town?

I’ve always said that living in a small town like Coonabarabran is like living life under a microscope. That is its

beauty and, sometimes, its curse.

Ever y thing is closer here, feel ings feel bigger. We’re inextricably connected. If you don’t know the someone, you know someone who knows the someone.

So much so, that on that fateful afternoon in May, it took just three text messages from an ABC producer and five physical steps to find out what had transpired and who the victims were. At a physie class. While my daughter and her friends danced unknowingly in the ‘before’. While police and emergency services descended on a grisly crime scene, just up the road.

Do I write about the media frenzy?

It’s a surreal experience reporting on local matters that garner nation-wide recognition in the media.

Standing on the sideline at a press conference, t r y i n g to m u s te r t h e courage to ask just one question, the question large news organisations never ask – the real local impact.

Other journalists are casually setting up their g e a r, l a u g h i n g a n d ch at t i n g a b o ut th e i r weeken d p l a n s. A n d there you are, trying your best to keep your shit together. To not scream and shout and yell at t h e m to h a ve s o m e respect. Are they immune to this grief?

Two boys are dead and in 90 minutes you have to magically manifest the tools to explain this to your own children. Because they know the boys. They really know the boys.

It feels like the world is on fire, but these news agencies are just out there doing their job. You

need to do your job too.

Do it how we’ve always done it out here in the bush, with compassion.

T r e a d l i g h t l y. N o hounding.

Long after the media throng has depar ted, you’re still going to be here telling this story, like you are today. Your words stick like glue in this town, so make them count. No take backs.

But the insatiable appetite and the vicious nature of the news cycle is enough to break the spi r it of any regional repor ter. It’s not even about the story anymore, they’re out for blood. If it bleeds, it leads. The first to print names. The first to publish the picture.

And it just so happened that this local tragedy occurred in the midst of Federal and Papal elections, along with the NSW Police Commissioner announcing her retirement.

This means Max and Sam we re p romptly bumped out of the media cycle and the public consciousness, only to be replaced by more senseless violence, tragedy and Trump.

My fea r, as both a journalist and as a mother, is that these beautiful boys have already been forgotten.

H ow ca n we, a s a community, remember and pay tribute to two little boys who had the world at their feet?

How can we make their short lives, live on just a little bit longer?

Emily Dickinson also wrote: “Hope is the thing with feathers”.

This brings me some semblance of peace.

Country stars delight full house at Bowling Club Coonabarabran music lovers were treated to a memorable afternoon of live entertainment on Sunday, 22 June, as country music favourites Jason Owen and Tanya Kernaghan brought their Let Your Love Flow national tour to town.

T he c o n c e r t , he ld at the Coonabarabran Bowling Club, was a sellout success, with all 142 tickets snapped up ahead of the event.

Bowling Club manager Ada m F reema n sa id the show had received glowing reviews from

patrons.

“It was a great event – we’ve had nothing but positive comments,” Mr Freeman said.

Jason Owen rose to fame as runner-up on The X Factor Australia in 2012.

With a career spanning more than 25 years, she has released a string of popular albums, toured

ex t ensively a nd won multiple Golden Guitar awards.

The show was part of the duo’s extensive national tour, blending classic hits and original tunes in a celebration of Australian country music.

“This area is quite amazing and it’s the diversity of interests that keep people together and bring people to the town – from the Wa r r u m b u n g l e s t o the amazing arts and creative life which is going on here.

“Industr y is also i m p o r ta nt b e ca u s e without industry you’re n ot g o i n g t o h a ve people coming and living in the town and you know it’s not going to be prosperous.”

The Governor’s trip to the Warrumbungle Shire was a busy one, with her itinerar y cove r i n g t h e Ta ra Caves Cultural Wa l k i ng Tou r w he re Her Excellency and Mr Wilson met with staff and volunteers from N SW Nationa l Pa r k s and Wildlife Service.

They went on to o b s e r ve a s c i e n c e l e s s o n w i t h Ye a r 7 students from Coonabarabran High School at the Warrumbungle Environmental Education Centre.

Coonabarabran CWA hos ted a luncheon for Her E xce l l en cy a nd h e r e nto u ra g e, i nv i t i n g representatives from a number of organisations across the community.

At the function, War rumbungle Shire Co u n ci l m a yo r, Cr Kathy Ri ndf l ei s h, del ive red a speech which acknowledged how honoured the com m un it y was to host the Governor and s howca se w hat the Shire had to offer.

Among guests were members of the Coonabarabran VRA, representatives from Police and emergency ser vices, local school principals, CWA members from branches across the Shire, Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal La n d Co u n ci l, 2 3 57 Development Group, councillors and more.

The luncheon was we l l re ce i ve d, w i t h volunteers preparing soups, sandwiches and sweet treats for guests to enjoy.

The Governor stressed her deep appreciation for t h e CWA , a n d s a i d wherever she travelled in rural areas, the CWA was always there to lend support.

“The wonderful CWA in many country towns, i ncl ud i ng today i n Coonabarabran, has been able to support us by bringing together the members of the community, which is just wonder ful,” she

said.

After lunch, the Gover no r made her way to Chadwick Downs Cattle Company.

Chadwick Downs has been making waves i n th e cat t l e industr y, specialising in genetics, bulls and Australian Brafords and Brangus.

The company now also boasts being the first 100 per cent Argentine B rafo rd g en et i c i m po r t i nto Australia.

Wh i l e v i s it i ng, the Gove r no r pe r used the artificial breeding centre as well as having a look at the farm’s current import artificial insemination program.

From there, the G ove r n o r ve n t u r e d to the NSW Rural Fire

Se r vice (RFS) F i re Control Centre to share afternoon tea with members and volunteers of NSW RFS. At tendees came from a range of local b r i g a d e s a n d we re keen to sit and talk to the Governor and Mr Wilson.

The Governor of NSW was delighted to be presented with all four editions of wattle magazine by Coonabarabran Times journalist, Molly Shannon.

A p r i vate d i n ne r was held on the mountain, where the Governor was joined by c o u n c i l l o r s a n d members from the scientific facility.

T he fo l l ow i ng day was an ea r l y s ta r t fo r H e r E x c e l l e n c y, who par ticipated in the weekly Sk y R i ve r Pa t h p a r k r u n at Coonabarabran’s Neilson Park.

However, the crisp morning did not seem to bother the Governor.

“I like to get out, most Saturdays I do a walk anyway, but that’s just another way to walk side-by-side with the community and meet people you wouldn’t usually meet,” she said.

“Eve r y tow n has been so interesting and each town has had its own highlights and a

positivity – I think that’s what’s really struck us about this particular area.

“We’ve been around so many regional towns we k now that the re are challenges all the ti me, pa r ticula r ly i n those a rea s a round education and health services.

“B ut the pos itivit y in these towns where people are really making a contribution and saying ‘we want this town to wo r k’ – if anything, that has been a highlight.”

To e n d t h e v i s i t, H e r E xce l l en cy a n d Mr Wilson travelled to the Emu Logic Farm in Tooraweenah, where they toured the emu paddock and met with local producers.

The Governor said that she had

co n c l u d e d h e r t r i p feeling inspired.

“If you go away from a place feeling happy, you want to come back, don’t you?”

F o r t h e G ove r n o r of NSW to visit small communities like the one we live in is rather special, and is not a common occurence.

Those who came into contact with Her Excellency said she was a kind, approachable and respectful woman w h o s e e m e d to b e truly passionate about engaging with the community.

Coonabarabran and the Warrumbungle S h i r e w e r e a b l e to showcase some of our b e s t a c h i eve m e n t s and share what makes this area such a special place to live and work.

“The city is fast, and whilst in the city many p e o p l e d o a l ot of things, that sense of direct contribution to a co m m u n it y i s n ot as obvious or as easy to find.

“In fact I’ve said it a couple of times, I just wish I could take this community spirit back and that sense of pride in what’s around you.

“The countr y is bea ut i f u l, it’s j us t a beautiful area and we will go back to Sydney fee l i ng so pos it i ve ourselves.

Every cuppa counts at Baradine fundraiser It was tea, treats and togetherness at the Baradine CWA Big Morning Tea, where every cup supported the fight against cancer.

by LIZ CUTTS Hosted by the B a r a d i n e C WA o n Thursday, 12 June, the event featured a tasty spread of homemade del ights, plenty of tea a nd cof fee a nd generous donations from attendees.

The morning was not only a chance to raise vital funds for cancer research and support ser v ices, but a lso t o honour those affected by cancer and to share s t o r ie s o f hop e a nd resilience.

More than $1200 was raised, which delighted organisers and earned the branch a Cancer Council commemorative teaspoon. “ The success of the Big Morning Tea was a reflection of the generosity and spirit of the local community,” Baradine CWA president, Irene Worrell said. “ We were delighted with the support we r e c eive d . It wa s hear twarming to see people come together for such an important cause.

volu nt e ers del ivered morning-tea packages t o the scho ols , lo ca l businesses, hospital and individuals who could not get to the hall.”

M r s Wo r r e l l s a i d that since the branch first started to hold the fundraiser back in 2000, they have raised over $15,000 for the Cancer Council. “ That makes us all very proud,” she added.

“I extend a heartfelt thanks to all our volunteers who baked, brewed, set up, delivered and helped make the event a success – we couldn’t have done it without them.

“I think Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is appealing because it transforms a rather routine activity into a meaningful event that brings people together for a great cause and a social get together. “ Events l i ke these not only support cancer resea rch, but help spread the all-important messages about cancer prevention, the need f o r e a rly d e t e c t i o n , and available support resources.”

Unicorns to celebrate ‘Old Boys’ and sponsors with triple-header

It’s set to be a massive day of local rugby league as the Coonabarabran Unicorns host their annual Old Boys and Sponsors Day this Saturday, 28 June at No. 1 Oval.

With three back-to-back games lined up against the Coolah Roos, the day p romises something fo r everyone – whether you’re a die-hard fan, a former player, or one of the many businesses that help keep the club running strong.

Following a morning of junior footy, reserve grade will kick off the afternoon’s on-field action at 12 noon, with their first round of the 2025 competition.

At 1.15pm, the women’s league-tag team will take

the field, followed by the first-grade clash at 2.30pm.

T h e U n i co r n s w i l l b e looking to put on a strong performance in front of a home crowd as they tr y to topple Coolah from its number-one position on the leader board.

Unicorns’ president, Keith ‘Ducko’ Hull said the club was pulling out all the stops to make the day one to remember.

Hull said. “ It’s a cha nce fo r us to say thank you to the peop l e w ho’ve hel ped build the club – both on the paddock and behindthe-scenes.

“We’ve got some great footy lined up, a top crew of volunteers running the ca nte e n a n d b a r, a n d we’re hoping to see a good crowd come out in their blue and gold to support the teams.”

Mr Hull said club legend, the late Robert Cox, would

also be ack now ledged during the event, highlighting the impact Coxy had on local football.

Viral video In the lead - up to the event, the club has been having a bit of fun with a video cam pa ig n to thank their 2025 sponsors – featuring Unicorns’ players giving a very entertaining s h o u t - o u t to t h e l o ca l businesses that keep them going.

The video, posted on the club’s Facebook page, has

gone “viral”, racking up thousands of views and plenty of laughs.

“It’s just a bit of fun, but it s how s how m uch we appreciate the backing we get from businesses around Coonabarabran,” Mr Hull said.

“Without them, and without our past players and volunteers, we wouldn’t have the club we’ve got today.

“Come down on Satu rday, have a feed, suppo r t the teams and

h e l p u s ce l e b ra te t h e people who make this club what it is.”

Following the games, the party will continue at the Coonabarabran Bowling Cl ub, ma jo r sponso r of the Unicor ns, for an evening of friendship and memorabilia.

‘Old Boys’ are invited to wear their club colours and reunite w ith past teammates, with music by Nikki D at 8pm following official proceedings.

Rotary celebrates a year of giving and growth The Rotary Club of Coonabarabran gathered at the Coonabarabran Club on Saturday, 14 June, for its annual Changeover Dinner – an evening to toast the achievements of the past 12 months and set the stage for a new year of fundraising and community collaboration.

C u r r ent pr e s ident Ma r ie K n ight was officially reappointed for a second consecutive term in 2025/26, continuing her leadership after a busy and transformative year at the helm. “ This past year Rotarians were asked to look for the magic of Rotary,” Mrs Knight said.

“It has not been an easy year for our club, with the loss of Robert Cox and the decline in health of many of our Rotary family, but it has been within the family of Rotary that I have found our greatest magic.

“I applaud the work that members have put into the club for our community – it is their magic that I have found.”

A l o n g w i t h s u p p o r t i n g D u b b o ’s Macquarie Homestay, one of the club’s major achievements in 2024/25 was the d istr ibution of si g n i f ic a nt f u nd s to community causes, i nclud i ng a $1 2 ,0 0 0 donation to the Rotary District Disaster Fund – an amount that, for the first time, was prioritised over some of the club’s usual annual giving. “ We always aim to support as many causes as we can, but this year we made a very conscious decision to donate to the district disaster fund as a way of saying ‘thank you’,” she said. “ D u r i n g t he 2 013 Wambelong bushfire and the years of drought, our town received incredible support from that network – millions of dollars from clubs across the state came to Coonabarabran.

“It felt right to give

something back.”

The Rotary disaster fund is currently prov id i ng $5 0 0 cash cards to people affected by f looding, and Mrs Knight said the locallyd r iven natu re of the initiative was key to its success.

“It works because it’s done at club level. Local Rotary members know who’s in need. They’re the ones talking to the scho ols, the produce stores, the people on the ground. “ It ’s fast , it ’s compassionate and it’s dignified.”

To date, a round $60,000 in cash cards have a l ready been distributed, with further funds to be allocated in coming weeks and months.

Mrs Knight, who sits on the district’s disaster committee, said it was a privilege to represent farming communities and share her experience of Rotary’s impact in tough times.

Looking ahead, the club is embracing a wave of new ener g y, w it h several new members bringing fresh ideas.

“There’s a real buzz,” Ms Knight said. “ T he new members are passionate and full of ideas – a nd we’re looking to build on that momentum. “ One th i ng we’re working on is starting c om mu n it y m a rke t s at the Coonabarabran Showground.”

The markets, although still in the planning phase, will be designed to bring the community together and provide a space for local makers, growers and creatives to

share their work.

“We’ve done a lot of g roundwork and now we’re just waiting on approval from the Showground Trust,” she said. “ T he showg round makes perfect sense – it’s accessible, there’s parking and it avoids a lot of red tape.”

The club is considering launching the markets s e a s on a l ly o r e ve r y two months, with clear guidelines about the type of stallholders they want to attract.

The idea has drawn inspiration from other successf u l countr y markets, such as those held in Dunedoo and Narromine, and the club is a lso i nvestigati ng a f fordable i nsu rance options for stallholders.

“There’s a system now where small stallholders can get public liability insurance for around $50 a year, or even just $20 for a one-off market.

“Rotary’s insurance covers the club and the public, but we can’t cover individual stallholders.

So that’s something we’re making sure people know how to organise.”

Beyond the markets, the R ota r y Club is work i ng on severa l place-based community projects.

T he s e i nc lude t he replacement of the symbolic blue tree, lost in a fire, as part of a suicide awareness campaign.

The project will be a joint effort with local mental health and youth groups. “ We c ou ld ju s t g o ahead and build it, but that misses the point,” Mrs Knight said. “ I t ’ s a b o u t

What is the best piece of advice you have been given? ‘Think very carefully about very obvious things’– my high school religion teacher, who was a former US Green Beret soldier, telling me about the best way to think about religion and philosophy.

What’s the most interesting job you’ve ever had?

I spent a few weeks in Qatar, coaching their national schools’ debating team and working with universities on public speaking.

If you could instantly be an expert in any field, what would it be? Partial differential equations, a branch of mathematics, which is used to analyse lots of ideas in physics – like heat flow or the vibration of strings.

Best thing about living in Coonabarabran? The sky at night and the remarkably social visits to Woolies.

How do you wind down after a long day? Playing with my dogs and taking them to the park.

What/who do you think is your spirit animal? For sure, an elephant.

What is your favourite place to visit on a road trip?

Wollongong – lots of friends and family there.

What event in Coonabarabran do you look forward to most each year? Probably a cliche, but the Coona Show is always a highlight.

If you could swap lives with anyone for a day, who would it be? One of the astronauts up on the International Space Station (ISS) – I reckon one day in space would absolutely do me.

If you could pick a decade to visit in a time machine, what would it be? The 1980s – my parents insist it beats the 2010s, and I’d just want to confirm that they are wrong.

Students have enthusiastically formed five teams, with two teams competing each day over a span of five days, leading up to the finals on the last two days of the competition.

The matchups have been competitive and showcased impressive skills a nd s p o r t s m a n s h ip , making for an engaging exper ience for both players and spectators alike.

EDUtech I had the opportunity to attend the E du Te c h c on fe r en c e at the I nt er n at ion a l Con ference Centre i n Da rl i ng H a rb ou r, S y d n e y. T h i s e v e n t brought t ogether a range of school-based technology companies, from industry giants like Google and Microsoft

to innovative startups showcasing their latest products.

I was delighted to see familiar tools that our Tooraweenah students currently use in class, alongside exciting new technologies that have just hit the market. The conference featured a va r iety of workshops and guest speakers. I had the opportunity to attend sessions f rom Google, the Department of Education, and the Personal Development

Coonabarabran Public and Wellbeing team.

It wa s a f a nt a st ic experience that provided me with fresh ideas and programs to implement in our classrooms. I came away inspired, armed with new resources – and even a few freebies!

I look forward to sharing these insights with our school community and enhancing our students’ learning experience.

Rugby, sunshine and school spirit at the Coonamble Cup! It was one of those cracking winter days that only Coonabarabran can deliver – sparkling sunshine and endless blue skies – when Mr Yabsley, Steve and crew boarded the bus bright and early, with a busload of excited students bound for the Coonamble Cup. Spirits were high as they travelled through hills and across the plains, ready for a big day of rugby – and what a day it was! CPS proudly fielded two under 10’s teams and two under 12’s teams. For many of the younger students, it was their first taste of competitive rugby, and they grew in strength, confidence and skill with every game.

Highlights included spectacularly courageous tackling from Hayden Denny and Beau Watton, and powerful runs from Chad Stewart, Tommy Dicks and Cain Ashby.

Both under 12’s teams had a very successful outing, making it all the way to the grand final against Wellington.

Jacob Cook displayed impressive agility, while the match awareness of Will Weatherall and Paige Szabo was both admirable and effective.

All teams demonstrated o u t s t a n d i n g sportsmanship and were honoured with

an invitation to play at Walgett in August – what a recognition of their team spirit and effort!

A big thank you to Mr Yabsley, Coonamble Public School, and Rugby NSW for organising such a memorable and wellrun day of sport.

Finally, a special mention to the rugby bus choir –perhaps not pitch perfect, but every bit as enthusiastic as the

players on the field!

Among other highlight this week was the annual visit from Healthy Harold. 1/2K were the first to visit with their Ready Steady Go experience, and they had a wonderful and informative time in the van. Other classes will be learning about cyber bullying and thinking twice before acting.

The evening was filled with pride and joy as nine of our newest Guides made their official Girl Guide Promise, marking the beginning of their journey in Guiding.

A highlight of the night was a lively performance by Ava Harley, who delighted the audience with her ‘Carefree Boogie’ piano recital, earning her the

This month, to date, has been noteworthy, with severe frosts from north-east Victoria all the way to Charleville in the Maranoa and Warrego district in outback Queensland.

Roma has had a record long sequence of frosts lower than minus 2.5 degrees for six successive nights in 68 years of records for the month of June, which may turn out to be coldest for June since 1911, while Charleville is also facing its coldest June since 1911 when the meanminimum temperature fell to more than three degrees below normal. If both towns recorded their coldest June since 1911, the latter part of that year saw very hot, dry conditions over most of Victoria right up to inland Qld from November 1911 to February 1912.

The previous coldest June spell in Roma occurred in 1971, after which the rest of that year all the way to early in 1972 was notably wetter than average from Victoria up to inland Qld, including Roma and Charleville.

Monday morning’s temperature was minus 5.5 degrees at Forbes, the coldest in June since minus 6.4 degrees in 1998 and the third coldest, including a reading of minus 5.9 degrees in 1959.

Condobolin recorded minus 5.5 degrees, the coldest in June since minus 6.1 in 1966, after which during the third week of July 1966 saw snowfalls at all low level centres in north-east Victoria.

Goulburn recorded minus 10 degrees, the second coldest for June since minus 10.2 degrees on 15 June 2000.

Coonabarabran recorded minus 5.3 degrees last Friday, 20 June, the coldest for June since minus 6 degrees in 2019.

Many residents in north-east Victoria have complained about the high frequency of very cold nights in both May and June.

In Benalla, the lowest temperature in May was minus 3.3 degrees on 20 May, while the lowest temperature in June was minus 3.5 degrees on 5 June. It’s the first time in 68 years of records that both May and June in the same year saw the lowest temperature fall below minus 3.0 degrees.

The other time this successive months of May and June, which came close to this year’s situation, was in 2012, when July that year was wetter and colder than average.

Benalla also recorded low minimum Ziara Swanson, who was awarded the official Junior BP temperatures below minus 3.0 on four occasions Award, cuts the celebration cake. this June, the greatest number on record. The previous greatest number was three in June 1966, after which above-average rainfall was recorded over all of Victoria for the rest of 1966, with floods in mid December, while in NSW aboveaverage rain was recorded from August through to December 1966. Except for a wet August, most of inland Qld saw a dry period for the rest of 1966.

The table-topping Coolah Kangaroos and the second-placed Coonabarabran Unicorns are set to thrash it out next Saturday in a game that should draw one of the biggest crowds in recent times to the Coonabarabran sportsground.

CASTLEREAGH LEAGUE The ‘Roos are unbeaten thus far in 2025, but they can expect that they will have to work hard to maintain that status against the Unicorns, who have only suffered the one defeat in the opening eight rounds of the competition, that being a two-point loss to the Cobar Roosters at Cobar back in round three!

B oth teams had strong wins over the weekend, with Coolah retaining the Boronia Cup when they saw off the challenge from the Gulgong Bull Terriers with an emphatic 52 to 12 victory at Coolah.

The Unicorns, mea nwh i le, were t oo good for the Coonamble Bears, converting a 14 points to nil lead at half time into a 36 to 10 win, with five of their seven tries being scored by their players numbered one to five – which gives an indication as to their willingness to spread the ball in attack.

the Warren Bulldogs 40 points to 30 in a highscoring game played out at Warren.

Apa r t f rom what should be great clash at Coonabarabran, some other interesting games are on offer throughout the Castlereagh area this Saturday, not the least of which will be the game at Narromine’s Ca le O va l when t he third-placed Jets host the equal-fourth-placed Cobar Roosters and, with the race for a semi-final berth hotting up, the pre cious competition points on offer should ensure an entertaining game unfolds.

Similarly, the desire t o st ay i n the sem ifinal hunt means that the game to be played at Coonamble between the Bears and the Bull Terriers from Gulgong will be a willing affair, and while not life threatening to the loser, not getting the competition points will make it just that little harder.

Full-throttle future FROM BACK Dedicated from the beginning, Lewis has committed himself not only to the sport, but also to the lifestyle that accompanies it. “ F ro m w h en I f i r s t threw my leg over a bike, I just loved it,” he said.

“When I love s o m et h i n g a n d I ’m passionate about it, I’m committed to getting to the top.”

Seeing Lewis’s commitment and determination is very f u l f i l l i n g fo r Lew i s’s parents, Amanda and Grant Browan. “ We a re j u s t so p r o u d ,” M r B r o w a n said.

“Lewis has only been competing for two and a ha lf yea r s. To get to the l evel that he is at has taken a lot of commitment and hard work behind the scenes, which people don’t often get to see.”

Mr Browan attributes his son’s success on the track to his mindset.

“I just think it is his tenacity when he gets on the track,” he said.

“He is quite a calm, humble kid, but when he gets on the track, he can be quite ruthless

– which is what you need in this sport – but he respects everyone beside him on the track.”

Lewis has received support far and wide, highlighting the impact it has had on his career.

“A huge number of people have helped h i m a l o n g th e wa y, right from locals who coached him in the earlier stages, to Nathan, who is a national coach, and h i s s p o n s o r s ,” M r Browan said.

Being able to help Lewis grow in the sport he loves means a lot to his parents. “ F o r m e, i t i s t h e satisfaction of doing so m eth i n g th at yo u love. Not a lot of people in the world get to do that,” Mr Browan said “If you are good at s o m et h i n g a n d yo u have got the support, you just have to go out and give it a crack.”

Lew i s n ow ha s h i s sights set beyond the border, with plans to race overseas in his early 20s.

“I am hoping it takes me to an Austral ian championship and then I plan to go racing in Europe,” Lewis said.

“If that goes well, I

want to head over to America and compete there.”

When asked about what makes a good r i d e, Lew i s s a i d, “ I f

you have really good technique, you’re safe.

Then, when you know you’re safe, you can go fast!”

With over 20 players contesting the Saturday golf competition, it meant th at there were t wo prizes on offer.

Browan on track for success When you have the right blend of ambition, discipline and passion, only you can dictate how far you go and16-yearold local motocross rider, Lewis Browan has been proving that to be true.

by CLAUDIA HEANEY The Coonabarabran High School s t u d e nt h a s b e e n s u cce s s f u l l y climbing the NSW and Queensland ranks in motocross, with no plans to stop.

With th ree years of r iding experience and only competing for the last two and a half, Lewis has already managed to make tracks in the sport.

“I had a small bike as a kid, I started to like it, so I quit rugby and got into motocross,” he said.

“When I got my first big bike, I went on a motocross track and knew straight away that this was what I wanted to do.”

Lewis has had a very successful season thus far, placing third in the NSW Iron Man Series, 10th overall in the Dubbo NSW State Titles MX2C class and 15th in the Queensland State Titles.

“In the State Titles, we have one practice lap and then we head straight in for a 10-minute qualifying lap. The fastest time gets the best gate pick. “ I t ’s a t wo - m oto (t wo ra ce) format with 12 minutes each Moto.”

Lewis is also currently leading the Moree rounds and the Toowoomba championships.

To compete at this level, riders have to be committed day in and day out. To ensure he is at the top of his game, Lewis has his week carefully planned out.

“On Monday, I will go to the gym

and on Tuesday will leave school early and train on the dirt bike,” Lewis said.

“Wednesday is an off-bike day as I go to the gym. On Thursday, I leave school early again to train on the bike.

“On Friday, if I’m not travelling for a competition, I’ll go to the gym again.”

Implementing the correct training regimen is crucial for success in the physically-demanding event.

Lew is has en l isted the help of p rofes s i o n a l m oto c ro s s a n d supercross athlete, Nathan Crawford, at 00 Elite Rider Training.

“I was absolutely stoked when I found out I was accepted.

“It has been going really well – I have ga i ned speed l i ke it’s nothing.”

Coached by Mr Crawford on a private track two to three times a month alongside professional riders, Lewis also follows a personalised program sent to him for his training at home.

The competition i n N SW i s significantly different to Qld, Lewis said.

“Queensland is a completely different kettle of fish in comparison to NSW. “ I n N SW, yo u h a ve yo u r to p five r iders who just go out and absolutely blitz everyone. Then, in Queensland, no matter where you are in the positioning, it is always big competition – everyone is fast.”

Tourism in spotlight Tourism leaders, business owners and changemakers gathered in Narrabri for the New England North West Regional Tourism and Placemaking Forum, hosted at The Exchange.

This half-day forum, held earlier this month, was hosted by Business NSW New England North West and Narrabri Shire Council, with support from Collective Media, publisher of the North West Magazine,

The Courier, Wee Waa News and Gunnedah Times.

It was a highly informative and collaborative day, featuring a key note address from the NSW government’s 24-hour economy initiative as well as spotlight presentations and a regional panel discussion.

Business NSW New England North West regional director Diane Gray was amazed at the incredible level of

community engagement and enthusiasm at the event.

“We were thrilled to bring together the region’s change-makers at this forum to discuss the challenges and enormous opportunities in attracting visitors and growing the North West regional economy,” says Ms Gray.

“This forum is about facilitating conversations not just around tourism, but the

broader needs of our communities, from infrastructure to liveability and everything in between” she adds.

Ms Gray explained that by collaborating with local leaders and industry experts, the forum aims to identify solutions that will help shape a sustainable, vibrant future for the North West.

Fresh crop of talent in ag heartland Narrabri’s The IN BRIEF

The Moree region continues to flex its strength as an agricultural powerhouse, with an influx of fresh young agricultural science graduates choosing to forge their careers in the district.

James Garnsey and Dior Rohr are two next-gen agronomists calling Moree home, and exemplify the future of agricultural consultants, buoyed by technology and innovation, and excited for the untapped opportunity data affords.

James is a recent University of Sydney graduate, whilst Dior last month graduated from the University of Armidale, and both now work for local private agronomy firm, Poole Ag Consulting.

From drone mapping to analysing yield and soil data, 23-yearold James comes armed with a passion for data, and a keen thirst for knowledge.

“My ag science degree had a strong precision ag component, and I really love data,” he smiles.

However, he admits putting it into practice hasn’t been quite as straightforward outside the classroom.

“Data isn’t always as pretty in the real world, but I’m really keen to see how we can use the information we have at hand to help underpin genuinely informed management decisions for optimal production, and essentially profitability.”

Having grown up in Bourke, and then Wagga Wagga, James knew his future lay in rural Australia, and with family in the area, he’s very happy to now call Moree home.

“My first impression was just how driven every producer is to be more productive, to increase their efficiency and trial new innovations – the region is an agricultural powerhouse, and local

growers are certainly industry leaders.”

It was university holidays spent working on corporate farms that piqued his interest in an agronomy career – describing it as “the junction of science and nature, creating a synergy to maximise soil and plant health, and production.”

A career in agronomy wasn’t always on 21-year-old Dior’s horizon – while bug checking in 40 degree summer heat is not for the faint hearted, the experience marked an unexpected turning point in her career aspirations.

"I hadn't really considered a career in agronomy until I came out here bug checking in 2022, and again for the 2023 season," she explains.

"I came with a friend after

seeing the opportunity at the UNE Careers Fair, and had so much fun. The work is hard, but it's so rewarding, and certainly not boring - your mind is always on and you have to use your head, rather than just physical labour or sitting on a machine."

Dior, who grew up in the Hunter Valley on a cattle property, admits that she'd never even seen a cotton crop before bug checking, and loved her season.

Ever curious, with a drive to find practical solutions and problem solve, Dior is excited by the rewards and challenges of agronomy.

And she believes there's no better place to launch her career than in the north west.

"This region is such an agricultural powerhouse, and it's such a privilege to be working with some of Australia's most progressive growers."

"I'm looking forward to building relationships with growers, managers and other industry stakeholders - there's such a strong

network here in Moree - and of course gaining skills and knowledge to build my expertise."

'I'm also particularly excited by cotton production, it's such a complex crop and it's a challenge I'm looking forward to embracing.”

Cotton is also a new commodity for James, and he too has enjoyed upskilling in cotton agronomy during his first season on the job.

He’s also enjoying being part of the Poole Ag team, and is thrilled to work for a progressive business with its eye to the future.

“It’s exciting to work with a team, and clients, not afraid to trial some of the latest technology and innovation.”

“Ag is on the precipice of an exciting new digital age, and as a young agro I’m optimistic that I’m in a position to help be part of that transition - seeing what works and what doesn’t, and how we can adopt and leverage new technology to benefit growers - and it’s a very exciting proposition.”

Stop the super tax on family farmers, peak body warns The state’s peak farm body NSW Farmers has issued a fresh warning to the federal government on its proposed super tax that could shut young farmers out of the agricultural industry.

Farmer Craig Huf, of the Northern Rivers region, said the federal Treasurer’s proposed changes to superannuation laws could make it impossible for his family cattle farm to be passed down to the next generation.

“Many hardworking Aussie farming families like my own have their farm assets in structures such as self-managed superannuation funds, which could soon have huge taxes slapped on them if these new laws come into effect,” Mr Huf said.

“These changes will tax our families on money we haven’t earnt, because we’ve supposedly made money on assets we haven’t sold.

“The Albanese government’s

failure to recognise a common business structure in these laws could well mean farms are ripped off families, leaving the next generation with no land to produce the food and fibre that we need for the globe.”

Any changes to tax laws must not unfairly impact family farms or other small, family-owned businesses, Mr Huf said, with farm bodies firmly opposed to the proposal to tax unrealised gains in superannuation holdings.

“Farmers just want to keep farming, and the next generation just wants a fair go at producing food and fibre for the world,” Mr Huf said.

“Sensible amendments to the proposed superannuation changes are what we need if we want to set Aussies up for a better future, beyond this cost-of-living crisis. Slapping family farmers with another tax is not building a future made in Australia.”

The reopening of The Crossing Theatre has been delayed until late July as Narrabri Shire Council continues to complete fire safety upgrades at the facility.

This includes the rectification works identified last month.

In an update issued last Wednesday, council said it is committed to delivering a safe facility for the community.

The extended closure will also enable consultation with Fire and Rescue NSW during key stages of the project, council’s update read.

Three consultations are required, the first of which has been completed. The next two stages are the Initial Fire Safety Report (in preparation) and the Final Fire Safety Report upon full completion of the works.

“We understand this delayed re-opening will cause frustration among our community and users of the venue and we apologise for the further delay,” Narrabri Shire Council general manager Eloise Chaplain said.

“These consultations are a required step in the process and is critical to ensure The Crossing Theatre meets the highest possible standards when it comes to the safety of its users, including our staff and the community.”

Narrabri Shire Council mayor Darrell Tiemens is also currently working with the NSW government around the process, in the hope of opening the venue earlier.

Health district hearing postponed A public hearing due to take place in Narrabri last Monday was postponed due to travel issues.

The public hearing was being held as part of the inquiry looking at a proposal to split the Hunter New England Health District into two separate districts – Hunter Local Health District and the New England North West LHD. “Committee members and staff were unable to travel due to an aircraft mechanical issue,” said a statement on the Legislative Assembly’s social media page.

“The rescheduled public hearing dates will be announced at a later date. We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused.”

The Committee on Community Services is holding the inquiry into the Health Services Amendment (Splitting of the Hunter New England Health District) Bill 2025 after it was referred to the committee by the Legislative Assembly in February.

An investigation is underway after a fire in Moree.

About 9pm on Saturday, June 21, officers attached to New England Police District were patrolling on Anne Street, Moree, when they observed a shed within a community centre on fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW attended and extinguished the fire; however, the shed, along with a vehicle and gardening equipment were destroyed.

There were no reports of injuries.

A crime scene has been established and police have commenced an investigation into the incident.

National blueprint to standardise soil health across Australian agriculture A $10 million project is set to transform how Australian agriculture understands and addresses soil health – creating a standardised, cross-sector approach.

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) will invest $6.8 million in a fiveyear initiative, which will see Australia’s national science agency CSIRO lead the development of a Soil Health Framework tailored to Australian production systems.

The framework will define soil health and function, outlining how it is measured, monitored, managed and reported within Australian agricultural systems, including regionally relevant reference datasets that can be

used as benchmarks.

GRDC sustainable cropping systems manager Cristina Martinez said healthy soils underpin high-performing farming systems.

“No matter what kind of crop you plant or stock you run, the soil beneath your feet is a key determinant of how profitable and sustainable a farm business will be,” Dr Martinez said.

“As well as dealing with wellknown issues such as erosion, acidification and salinisation, farmers across all agricultural sectors must make key decisions related to soil resilience and productivity across a suite of soil types, each potentially requiring a unique approach for optimal outcomes.”

Dr Martinez said that in addition to soil health being a long-standing issue for grain growers and other agricultural sectors, there has been growing national and international attention on the topic.

“Nationally, soil health is a key focus of the National Soil Strategy, and the Australian Agricultural Sustainability Framework specifically calls out the protection and enhancement of soil health as a key principle,” she said.

“Internationally, several approaches have recently been developed or proposed, with potential implications for future market access and sustainability credentialing schemes.

Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment Registration of Interest Everick Heritage Pty Ltd (ABN 78 102 206 682) has been engaged by GHD on behalf of Moree Plains Shire Council to undertake an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment (ACHA) and Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit (AHIP) to assess the proposed upgrades to Terry Hie Hie Road, southeast of Moree within the Moree Plains LGA. The Project Area falls within the bounds of the Moree Local Aboriginal Land Council. It is understood that the Stage 2 alignment has been finalised, and the Stage 3 and Stage 4 alignments are still in the concept design process. In accordance with the guidelines set out in the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Consultation Requirements for Proponents (2010) Everick is seeking to consult with Aboriginal persons who hold cultural knowledge relevant to the Project Area to assess any potential impacts this Project may have on Aboriginal cultural values in the area. The consultation will be undertaken to inform the ACHA and will support an AHIP application.

“However some of the major contrasts in soil and environmental conditions that drive best practice on Australian farms can differ markedly from agricultural systems overseas,” he said.

“It is paramount that a fit-forpurpose Australian Soil Health Framework is developed that not only enables soil health to be effectively benchmarked, but that also provides a scientifically robust evidence base to ensure

continued access to overseas markets.”

A cross-commodity collaboration has been established to ensure a consistent sector-wide approach including, to date, the Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC), Dairy Australia, Australian Wool Innovation (AWI), Wine Australia, Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), and AgriFutures.

The framework will be co-designed with input from key industry stakeholders across the supply chain, including growers, advisors, finance sector/banks, markets/traders/buyers, government and industry bodies/representative organisations, ensuring it is practical, credible and widely adopted.

Project research partners include CSIRO, University of Sydney, Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA)’s South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) and in collaboration with the University of Adelaide, University of Western Australia, Eurofins-APAL and ViridisAg.

$27 million Gunnedah Saleyards upgrade officially complete and fit for the future

The $27.4 million Gunnedah Regional Saleyards Redevelopment was officially opened by Gunnedah Shire Council mayor Colleen Fuller and Minister for Agriculture Tara Moriarty last Tuesday.

Of the funds invested, the NSW government was responsible for $23.7 million while the Gunnedah Shire Council contributed $3.7 million.

“Without the NSW government’s funding contribution, we would not have this amazing facility,” Cr Fuller said.

“It has been a wonderful project to watch develop [throughout] the past couple of years.”

Included in the major works were a new multi-administration and buyers’ facility, new pens, improvements to internal roads, lighting and site access, and stronger biosecurity measures.

While it was initially intended to be ready in 2022, the project saw multiple delays.

The Gunnedah Times reported on these delays in June last year, including the requirement for a new turning lane.

Cr Fuller also mentioned weather may have caused some of the setbacks along with gathering materials.

“Those are the sort of things that can hold any project up,” she said.

The project had also required more funding, with it initially receiving $17 million in total.

Ms Moriarty said the upgrades were a worthy investment, with the saleyards employing 40 people and bringing a “$100 million of investment through the community”. “[The redeveloped saleyard] is absolutely fit, not just for now but to be sustainable well into the future,” she said.

The minister said the upgrades not only protect the saleyards, but also provides more opportunity for the sector to grow, with agriculture worth $20 billion to the NSW economy.

“Everybody who’s been involved should be incredibly pleased and proud [of the outcome],” she said.

Gunnedah Shire Council general manager Eric Groth said the Gunnedah Saleyards consistently ranked in the top five in NSW and the top eight in Australia.

He made multiple acknowledgements of those who helped see the project come to fruition, including to Gunnedah Stock and Station Agents Association president Tim Walsh.

Mr Walsh said the saleyard update will help Gunnedah move with the industry’s advancements.

He described the previous saleyard structures, with wooden rails and agents at the weather’s

mercy. The redevelopment included roofing, which he said was positive for the welfare of the people and animals.

The saleyards were kept

operational while construction was underway, with Mr Walsh stating it had only missed about two or three sales.

Mr Walsh believes there are

likely thousands of producers who use the facility.

To wrap up the formal events, the minister and mayor planted an ironbark tree.

Rural Crime Prevention team charges man with 26 offences Police have charged a man for multiple property and firearms offences in the state’s west.

In January 2025, officers attached to Rural Crime Prevention Team (RCPT) and Orana Mid-Western Police District established Strike Force Compartment to investigate break and enter offences in the Orana Mid-Western area in December 2024.

In December 2024, a rural property on Castlereagh Highway, Mendooran, was subject of a break, enter and steal. Among the items stolen were 13 firearms.

Following extensive inquiries, about 8.15am on Thursday, June 12, detectives attached to RCPT at Mudgee, with the assistance from Mudgee Detectives, Dubbo Detectives and the Operations Support Group, executed a search warrant at a home on Yalcogran Street, Mendooran.

Among the items seized by police was a complete firearm and firearm parts, a large amount of ammunition and a $7000 mountain bike.

On Friday June 13, a 29-year-old man was arrested just after 11.30am in Merrygoen. He was taken to Mudgee Police Station where he was charged with 25 offences, including: Three counts of aggravated enter dwelling and steal, 12 counts of steal firearm, possess unregistered firearm, possess stolen firearm, possess barrel for firearm, possess shortened firearm, shorten firearm, goods in custody, three counts of acquire firearm part, possess ammunition subject to prohibition order and stealing.

He was refused bail and appeared at Parramatta Local Court via AVL on June 14.
