So long, farewell, until next time: North West Expo wraps up The dust has settled on another thrilling chapter of the North West Equestrian Expo, which wrapped up in Coonabarabran on Tuesday, 3 June, after five jam-packed days of competition. by MOLLY SHANNON Now in its 33rd year, the much-loved event once again brought together hundreds of high-school r iders from across the state, showcasing talent, teamwork and the unmistakable spirit of the bush i n wh at has become Australia’s l a rgest a nd longest r u n n i n g i nt er s c ho ol equestrian competition. There were 405 riders i n att enda nce th is year, representing 85 schools, however, recent flooding on the east coast affected attendance, with some riders unable to ma ke the jou r ney t o Coonabarabran. With each rider typically bringing one or two parents, North West Equestrian Expo s e c r e t a r y, R e b e c c a Moxham, said there were around 150 0 to 20 0 0 people camping at the two venues – Showground and Racecourse – and staying in local motels. "We have a lot of locals come up tp watch, there’s no entry fee and there's great food from Rotary or the B a ker y,” M rs Moxham said. “People just wander around looking at things, it’s a bit of a spectacle, and then we have our grandparents and friends of competitors that come to watch as well.” Expo is usually trademarked by cold and rainy weather, however, t h i s ye a r wa s q u it e different with only one shower occurring on the Monday night. “It’s probably been the best five consecutive days of weather since we’ve been involved for the last

18 years, which I think makes it flow well,” Mrs Moxham said. Final presentation S pi r it s we r e h i g h at t he pr e s e nt at i o n ceremony on Tuesday,

as riders collected their well-earned trophies and awards. A f t er a wonder f u l parade, where schools donned their banners and paraded their ribbons

and shiny horses, the ceremony began. Kevin Sharp, Expo chairman, addressed the crowd. “Our aim is to provide an event which not only

o f fer s opp or t u n it ie s for r iders to develop their riding skills, but to also develop those personal and social skills which are important in you r development as

individuals,” Mr Sharp said. “A n e v e nt o f t h i s m a g n it ude r e q u i r e s an enormous number of people and our he ad s t ewa r d s do a

magnificent job. “It is to their credit that we were able to operate with little interruption.”
