Expo effort: local services rally for event The annual North West Equestrian Expo is a major event for Coonabarabran, bringing with it a host of opportunities for the town. by MOLLY SHANNON E xpo is not just a b o ut co m p et it i o n, i t i s a s h owca s e of community spirit, with local organisations like Rotary and Pursehouse Ru ra l p l ay i ng vita l support roles behindthe-scenes. Coonabarabran Rotary The Rotar y Club of Coonabarabran has been a big supporter of Expo for 25 years, catering for the hund reds of hung r y riders and visitors to the event. This year, a d e d i cate d te a m of Rotary members and volunteers served up a del icious a r ray of heart-warming meals, operating from 6.30am until 9.00pm each day. “This is our biggest fund-raiser of the year fo r Rota r y, a n d o u r goal when we’re fundraising is to then put money back into the community,” Rotarian, Heidi McGlashan said. This year, the Club hoped to raise money fo r flood - af fected areas such as Taree and Port Macquarie.

“ We’re h o p i n g to raise some money t o s e n d t h e i r w a y, b e ca u s e t h ey we re really kind to us during the drought and the bushfires, so it’s our turn to give a little bit back,” Ms McGlashan said. “T he Rota r y bookshop had been a significant, consistent income for us, but as we don’t have that anymore we need to have a fund - ra i si ng event that brings in a lot of money for the community, because there are a large num be r of d if fe rent organisations in town that rely on donations from organisations like Rotary to keep going. “To assist us, I believe there’s probably about 25 to 30 people that are coming along to E x p o a s vo l u nte e r s outside of Rotary. So, obvious l y, Rota r ians are still volunteering their time, but there are also people from the communit y who are coming to help.” Pursehouse Rural Pu rsehouse Ru ral p l ays a cr ucia l ro l e in Coonabarabran’s rural life, offering an

i nte g ra l s e r v i ce fo r local farmers. As in previous years, Pursehouse provided produce such as hay, horse feed and horse pastes to Expo par ticipants, setting u p a ‘m o b i l e s to re’ w he re com petito r s could purchase such produce in person. “ P u r s e h o u s e Coonabarabran help run and support Coona E x po w ith the feed, the produce and other a c t i v i t i e s ,” C o o l a h P u r s e h o u s e b ra n c h manager, Rowan Cox said. “But because Expo is such a big week and a b i g few day s, we do call on some other branches nearby for assistance – Rob, from Mullaley, has been over for a couple of days and I come over for a few days every year to help them.” P u r s e h o u s e conti nues to be a regular sponsor of the North West Equestrian E xpo, and many competitors rely on the resources the business has to offer over the two days Pursehouse attends.

“There is an o p p o r t u n it y fo r t h e participants of Expo, prior to when they get here, to go online and get a stable number and purchase feed, or anything else they need,” Mr Cox said, “We also provide a free delivery service so

that the hay and feed end up at their stable. When the participants a r r i ve – the wood shavings for bedding, hay, or whatever else they need – it’s already there. It’s pretty well streamlined – and their horse can just settle in and get on with the

week.” Together, the efforts of Coonaba rab ran Rotary and Pursehouse Rural showcase the strong spi r it of community that underpins the Nor th West Equestrian Expo. Whether it’s a hot m ea l se r ved w ith a

smile or a bale of hay delivered to a stable, b ot h o r g a n i s a t i o n s p l a y a v i ta l ro l e i n ke e p i n g t h e eve n t r u n n i n g s m o ot h l y – proving once again that beh i nd eve r y great event is a team of locals willing to lend a hand.
