Weld done: school expands workshop Coonabarabran High School has expanded its metalwork facilities to support hands-on learning and student growth.

addition of a fencedin,cemented outdoor work space, the students are only limited by their imagination with what they can create.

“We have students in

Year 7 through to Year 12 doing metalwork,” he said.

“This is a large number of students, therefore space has become an i s sue i n terms of storage and work space.”

A call to action for local youth With a decline of youth engagement in the community, local leaders are striving to re-connect young people with valuable programs and opportunities.

by CLAUDIA HEANEY Coonabarabran is lucky to have an abundance of r e s ou r c e s for y ou n g people, enhancing life sk i l ls a nd pr ov id i ng entertainment outside of school hours.

However, a s ever e d r op i n en g a g ement in high-school-age participants in available activities has led to a de c rease i n ser v ices available.

Yout h pr o g r a m sup er v i s or, D a n iel R ogers and youth case worker, Michelle Brady aim to ignite the interest of the younger generation.

However, Mrs Brady said this had become an increasingly difficult challenge after COVID-19.

“Generally, teenagers are disengaged in the community,” Mrs Brady said.

A drop in engagement amongst the younger generation has resulted in social disconnection amongst the younger demographic. The youth workers attribute this to the rise in social media, which Mrs Brady said had “taken over.”

They are too comfortable with it.”

T h e o v e r consumption of social media has proven to be detrimental.

Research shows that an increase in mental hea lth issues ca n be attributed to a lack of

socialisation.

Mrs Brady and M r R o g er s a r e b ot h invested in engag ing the generation a nd rebuilding that foundation.

Mr Rogers facilitates a range of programs and excursions for youth.

Currently, ser v ices a re focused mostly around primary-schoola g e s t udent s due t o their higher degree of interest.

T he s e i n c lude t he Drop-in Centre at the Coonabarabran Youth Club for primary school students, a breakfast club at the Coonabarabran Public S c h o o l o n a F r i d ay mornings, mini-literacy r un on Mondays and Thursdays to improve reading and wr iting, along with ‘Power Hour’ – a resilience-building session on conducted on Wednesdays.

He also runs a program called Reconnect – a healthand-fitness program for high-school students on Tuesday mornings.

T h i s pr o g r a m h a s received great feedback, i nsti l l i ng con f idence and accountability in the students.

“We pick up kids and take them to boxing in the morning and give them brea k fast ,” M r Rogers said.

“It sets them up for school for the day, but also for work life.”

He said the residual effect of the program has been increased school attendance amongst participating

students.

In addition, M r R ogers organises a range of excu rsions for kids aged 13 17, i nclud i ng 10 -pi n bowl ing and v isiting cinemas.

This gives kids the opportunity to experience opportunities outside of Coonabarabran that t hey m ay not get t o otherwise.

Children interested i n pa r ticipati ng i n t he s e pr o g r a m s a r e able to get in contact with Mr Rogers via the

Centacare Central West and Orana’s Facebook page.

Drop In Centre The Coonabarabran Drop-in Centre, which operat es out of the Coonabarabran Youth Club, has been a place for youth to socialise a n d d e c o mp r e s s f o r many years.

Now, however, as a result of low engagement, the centre h a s h ad t o s hut it s doors to high-schoolage students.

Mrs Brady has spent years helping facilitate

the Drop In Centre for local youth, investing in a range of resources and entertainment to c at er for a r a n g e of interests.

She emphasised the importance of facilities like the youth centre in the community.

“There’s a pool table, gaming, cooking, music, basketball and indoor soccer. A fternoon tea is provided and a place for the kids to just hang out,” Mrs Brady said.

“It’s a place to have a chat and come together, but it i s a l s o a sa fe

place and a support for our youth.”

T he centre also ho st s s c ho ol-hol id ay activities, with a focus on cooking, art, sport and games.

But, with the cu r rent trajector y of low attendance, these resources may be soon forgotten.

“If you don’t use it, you lose it. Resources that were available will no longer be available i f it c o nt i nue s ,” M r Rogers said.

Due to lack of interest, activities for high-school-aged youth have ceased at the Drop-in Centre, located at the Coonabarabran Youth Club – although local youth workers are hoping it re-ignite interest in their youth programs.

Connecting through creativity Everyone needs a space to unwind and let their imagination roam without bounds and Coonabarabran High school teacher, Tina Pech, has created that space for the broader school community.

by CLAUDIA HEANEY Every Monday, from 3.30pm to 5.00pm, staff, students and parents come together to create.

Ms Pech said the goal of each session was not necessarily the outcome, but the journey along the way.

“Sometimes, I have something specif ic in mind or a creative prompt. Often you sit down and don’t know how it will end,” she said.

The creative space also provides students with extra time to work o n th e i r a r t p ro j ect s outside of school hours.

Ms Pech noted that A r t La b h a d s e e n a reduction in numbers, affecting its viability.

“I would like to think it is something we could keep doing.

“I hope that if parents were a little more aware, there would be a more interest.”

The benefits of creative play extend further than many may realise.

“There has been a rise in mental health issues, anxiety and stress. Being creative can be ver y soothing,” Ms Pech said.

She also observed that many people have a preconceived idea that they are naturally not

good at art.

“Everyone is creative in their own way. There are so many different ways to be creative,” she said.

Broadening your horizons may lead you down an exciting new path.

“It is impor tant

to g o i nto i t w i t h o ut expectations. You don’t know what your thing is without trying it out.”

The sessions provide an opportunity to forge d e e p e r co n n e ct i o n s within the broader school community and Ms Pech hopes to attract a more diverse group of regular

participants.

“We are hoping for a mix of parents, students and staff to broaden our reach into the wider community.”

Art promotes development and new understanding in people.

As Ms Pech puts it – what you put in, you get out.

“People can discover fo r t h e m s e l ve s w h a t benef it s it ca n b r i ng them. For me, Art Lab is more about what others get out of it,” Ms Pech said.

Those interested are encouraged to give it a try – and see where the journey takes them...

Hunter girls Fit to play: Bra ready for Expo support program Sport plays a vital role in the lives of young people, but for many young women, something as simple as not having the right gear – like a properly fitting sports bra – can be a barrier to getting involved. Coonabarabran High School is stepping up to change that.

Three sisters who attend Coonabarabran High School are getting set to jump into the saddle at this year’s North West Equestrian Expo – and their sights are set on fun and fitness.

Abbigail, B rook lyn and Lillian Hunter will be representing their school in one of the b i g g e s t i nte r s c h o o l equestrian events in the southern hemisphere, held annually in Coonabarabran.

Between them, they’ll be taking on everything from dressage to cross country, with all three riders lining up for the multi-discipline Expo pentathlon for the first time.

It’s the second time at Expo for youngest si ste r, Li l l ian, w ho i s l o o k i n g fo r w a r d to showcasing her hard work in the lead-up. “ I ’ve b e e n r i d i n g most mornings and afternoons,” Lillian said.

“I’ve really focused on cross countr y b e c a u s e m y m a r e, N on i, can g et a b it timid. “ S h e’s s t r o n g i n

showjumping, but we’ve been building confidence out on the course.”

L i l l i a n’s h o r se, Colonial Eclipse – better known around the paddock as Noni – is a Dutch Warmblood the family has had on loan from friends for several years.

Older sisters Abbigail and Brooklyn are Expo vete ra n s, w it h 2 0 2 5 mar k ing thei r four th year at the event, but that doesn’t mean the nerves have dissipated. “ I’m m os t l oo k i ng for ward to the pentathlon,” Abbigail said. “ I t ’s my f i r s t t i m e doing it and it includes a b it of eve r y th i ng, so that’s exciting. I’m a l so pos s i b l y g i vi ng polocrosse a go this year.”

“She came to us with no education at all,” Abbigail said. “ I’ve ta ug ht he r e v e r y t h i n g – s h e’s really turned into an all-rounder.

“J u m p i n g a n d eventing are our best events, but t h i s ye a r I ’ve b e e n focusing on dressage a n d 8 0 - c e n t i m et r e showjumping.”

Brooklyn is also br inging a relatively new mount to E x po – Oscar the Encosta – an off-the -track t h o ro u g h b re d s h e’s o n l y h a d fo r t h r e e months.

“I’ve been working hard to form a bond w i t h h i m ,” B ro o k l y n said.

“We’ve been going to other events like the

Quirindi One Day Event, plus lots of practice at home.

“I’m excited for the pentathlon too! It’s got running and bike riding, which I love.”

D e s p i te t h e e a r l y mornings, long hours and homewo r k to jugg le, the g i r l s say Expo is a highlight of their year.

“There’s such a good atmosphere,” Abbigail said. “ Yo u s e e y o u r progress each year – and the school spirit is awesome. Everyone is cheering each other on.”

The Nor th West Equest rian Expo will be held from Friday, 30 May to Tuesday, 3 June 2025., bringing toget he r mo re t han 400 school-aged riders from across the state.

Sport is a crucial part of any young person’s life, with the benefits of exercise boosting physical health, mental health and also allowing for social and community connections.

However, many girls and young women find that there are barriers when it comes to participating in sport.

One such barrier is as simple as the proper sporting equipment, such as a sports’ bra.

Studies have found girls who don’t own a proper fitting sports bra are less likely to participate in sport than girls who do.

Additionally, it has been found t h at g i rl s i n r u r a l a nd r emot e areas, or from low socio-economic backgrounds, are more likely to lack access to bra fitting services, or the bras they need.

Coonabarabran High School and its P&C organisation are hoping to address this issue within the school.

After a successful initiative where

Ph i l ippa M it chel l – the fou nder and owner of The Fitting Studio, a mobile bra-fitting business which caters to women and girls of all sizes and needs – successfully fitted 60 females students from Gilgandra High School with sports bras, the impact was quickly visible.

T he Sydn ey Morning Herald reported that the Gilgandra school’s athletics carnival saw a 20 per cent increase in girls’ participation.

Now, T he F it t i n g S t ud io w i l l be v isiting Coonaba rabran High School, where private fitting rooms will be set up for girls who wish to participate.

The project is open to all female students, with bras to be provided free of charge.

Pa rents a nd g ua rd ia ns a re encouraged to attend and support their daughters in staying active – and comfortable.

Coonabarabran High School has been able to fund this sporting-bra program through its Equity Funding.

It’s “game on” at Breakthru The launch of Breakthru’s Wednesday gaming nights has been a great success, bringing faces old and new together to socialise and unwind.

The newly-introduced gaming evening invites young people aged 1 3 – 17 w h o r e c e i v e assistance th rough the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to engage with peers of a similar age and with similar needs.

Breakthru carer and event organiser Cody Higgins said the event aimed to provide a safe space for participants to re l i eve s t re s s a n d anxiety.

“We hope this helps them make l ifel ong fr iendships outside of Breakthru,” Cody said.

Gaming has been a common interest amongst many clients at the centre. “ T h e c l i e nt s i n o u r day program talk about gaming often.

“A cl ient asked me about it one day and I decided it would be a good idea to organise

the event,” he said.

T he event p rovides a new opportunity for co n n e ct i o n t h a t h a s n o t b e e n p r ev i o u s l y a va i l a b l e w i t h i n t h e community. “ We a re t h e f i r s t d i sabi l it y se r vice to o f f e r t h e p r o g r a m ,” Cody said.

The response has been over whelmingly p o s i t i ve, w i t h c l i e nt s already making it part of their weekly routine. “ We h a ve h a d to source a few more controllers and screens to accommodate everyone.

“Any other kids with a passion for gaming and wanting to meet people, come aboard!”

Parents have praised both the event and the wider work of Breakthru. “ I was su r p r i sed by all of the opportunities they offer the clients. It is just amazing. We are so l uck y to h ave th e s e r v i ce,” o n e p a re nt shared.

The supportive environment not o n l y fo s te r s f u n , b u t encourages clients to learn new skills they will have for life. “ T h ey g et to l e a r n independence and bui ld conf idence in

themselves,” the parent explained.

“There is a huge social benefit. He gets to spend time w ith people he has grown

up with and is getting to meet new people. Even meeting new adults has been really beneficial.”

The positive response from clients was

unanimous.

“It is good to socialise and fit in. I have met new friends,” one client shared.

Mr Heaney said the new outside area will help reduce the risk of damage to projects, a s t h e c l a s s ro o m i s a space shared with many students.

The vet metal and industrial technology classes have produced incredible results over past years, with students competi ng i n t h e Wo r l d S k i l l s competition and many major wor k s being nom i nated by H SC markers for inclusion in the HSC Showcase, SHAPE. Relieving principal, Duncan Graham said the upgrade was born from necessity.

“It was purely a need. These VET-based subjects a re cr itical fo r k ids and thei r pathway,” Mr Graham said.

“It is what interests a lot of our students.

Finishing a VET course i n meta l wo r k i s as valuable as finishing a HSC course for some students.”

Students had previously been limited by the outdoor conditions.

“It has been an unutilised space, with students tr ying to complete projects on the d i r t and g ra s s,” said Mr Graham, who described the wor k shop area as a “g a m e ch a n g e r fo r the students who do metalwork.”

The build suppor ts the growing interest a m o n g s t u d e nt s by

p rov i d i n g i m p roved accommodation.

“We can see that g rowing need, the demand is there,” Mr Graham said.

“The students have a lot of vision, so we needed the space for them to achieve it.”

Students have access to an array of tool s and mach i nes within the workshop, learning skills that will potentially assist them in the workforce. “ Te c h n o l o g y h a s

played a key role in helping students refine their skills, including the add ition of t wo virtual welders donated by NSW Wag g a Wag g a RTO TAFE in late 2023. This e q u i p m e nt red uces both the resou rce demands and costs t ypically associated with learning to weld. “ K i d s d o n’ t h a ve to wait for their turn i n the wel d i ng bay.

They can go off and practice before they

work on their projects,” Mr Graham said.

Plans for the upgrade have been in the works for the past five years, with most action taking place in the last two.

However, this is not the end of the road.

“The long-term plan is to put a roof over th e a rea a n d o pen the wall up between the classroom and the outdoor workshop,” Mr Graham said.

As the upgrade is dependent on government funding and grants, the co nt i n uat i o n of th e build will take place in stages.

Regardless, students now have access to a much more functional workspace to support t h e m t h ro u g h t h e i r practical education.

M r G r a h a m highlighted the success of the project and the

work it has taken to get to this point.

“This is a great project for the school and not one that has been done in isolation by any one person,” he said.

“It has been a process and taken a lot of work from a lot of people to make it happen.”

Nationals historic break from Coalition Newly-elected Federal Member for Parkes, Jamie Chaffey, has described the Nationals decision to walk away from the Coalition agreement with the Liberal Party on Tuesday, 20 May as a “momentous one” and a huge day in the party’s history.

M r C h a f f e y, w h o attended h is f i rst Nationals Party Room meeting in Canberra last week, said he could not support a position t h at a b a nd o ne d t he policies the party took to the election.

“I couldn’t support a position to walk away from policies that we t o ok t o the ele ction , just weeks ago, that were supported by the Parkes electorate,” Mr Chaffey said.

“To stay in a Coalition

with The Liberal Party, who don’t know what policies they do or will support, would be unfair to our National Party members, supporters, and those who voted for The Nationals.”

M r Cha ffey said the decision marked a firm stand for regional Australia. “ I strongly bel ieve The Nationals are the only Party that truly r e p r e s e nt s r e g i o n a l Australia, and we proved today that we

won’t back down, and we won’t apologise for standing up for what we believe in.”

He ack nowledged the long pa r tnership between the two parties, but said the Nationals h ad m ade t he r i g ht decision.

“It is unfortunate that we are in this position after such a long history with The Liberal Party, but I f i rml ly bel ieve that The Nationals have made the right decision, and we must stand by

these policies to truly represent the people of the Parkes electorate and regional Australia.”

M r C h a f fey adde d that he hoped the break was not a permanent one. “ I do hope that this isn’t a long-term a r r a n g ement a s t he country needs a united Opposition to hold the L abor G over nment accountable, but not at the cost of the people that we represent,” he said.

Last week, the Coonabarabran Junior Guides a nd Wa rata h Guides rolled out the red carpet for some very special guests – their mums or nans – for a delightful motherdaught er ‘ Pamper Night’.

T he Jun ior Gu ides were treated to a calming and caring experience, w ith specia l g uest Catriona Hardy guiding the girls in learning how to give gentle hand and shoulder massages. The room was f illed with

laughter and warmth as mothers and daughters t o ok t u r n s r el a x i n g and reconnecting. The evening also included a peaceful meditation session and w rapped up with a lively music quiz that had everyone smiling.

Meanwhile, the Wa rata h Guides a nd their guests were treated to a mini-spa experience.

After a soothing hand soak and massage, the girls and their mums or nans enjoyed painting each other’s nails and

sharing what they value about each other over a delicious afternoon tea.

Each family took home a beautifully handmade Himalayan salt body scrub, generously gifted by visiting guest, Cherie Williams.

Experts urge vigilance with RSV ahead of winter Australian experts are urging greater RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) vigilance and awareness among older adults, particularly grandparents caring for young grandchildren, ahead of the winter season.

“We know older adults are familiar with influenza – but less aware of RSV and the serious health challenges this infectious respiratory virus can cause,” said Professor Lucy Morgan, Sydney Respiratory Physician and Chair of the Lung Foundation.

“We really want older Australians, particularly those caring for grandchildren, to become much more informed and aware of RSV. They need to know about their risk and not assume it’s just a problem in babies.”

RSV is a common, infectious respiratory virus that generally peaks in autumn and winter, but can occur all year round. By the age of two, nearly every child – and therefore every grandchild – will have had RSV at least once.

Infected individuals can stay contagious for up to 10 days, placing older Australians, notably those caring for young children, at risk of RSV and the adverse health consequences that can result.

Although often mild, for older adults the RSV virus carries a similar risk to influenza in causing serious illness.

RSV can result in hospital stays for older adults lasting on average six days. Compared with children under five years, older adults hospitalised with RSV may spend twice as long in hospital, while fatalities from the virus are four times higher.

Following hospital stays for RSV, older adults may experience long-term health complications, need

increased care and feel a loss of independence.

“The impact of RSV can be very serious for older Australians who may struggle to regain their health and conditioning after the virus has cleared,” said Associate Professor and senior geriatrician, Michael Woodward.

“Unfortunately, some may have significant delays in regaining their former health and independence after RSV.” Clinical Professor John Blakey, consultant respiratory physician and medical advisor to Asthma Australia, said older adults with existing heart or lung disease are at higher risk of being admitted with RSV. “They are five to 10 times more likely to end up in hospital.

People with conditions like asthma and COPD therefore need to be particularly aware of RSV and how to minimise their risk.”

RSV generally starts with mild symptoms, similar to other respiratory viruses such as influenza and COVID-19, including cough, headache, tiredness, runny nose and congestion. RSV can survive on hard surfaces for up to six hours and is easily spread, including between family members of all ages.

Older Australians are being urged to become more informed and alert to RSV ahead of winter, especially when caring for young grandchildren, and talk to their doctor or pharmacist about RSV and prevention options.

Through a bold new crowd fund ing campaign, the not-forprofit gallery is aiming to raise $3000 to buy a shipping container for much-needed extra storage behind its Dalgarno Street home.

from a large number of individuals, typically online. These contributions can be in the form of donations, loans, or exchanged for rewards or equity in the venture.

“We wanted to make

sure that this was a very small limited edition, b e c au s e we n e e d t o make our initial goal as soon as possible. We don’t want to have put in a lot of time and effort and not get at least the funding for a container,” Ms Reynolds said.

“People will need to get i n qu ick s o they do not m i ss out . We have backed ourselves and the town in this campaig n by making it all-or-nothing – we k now we ca n do it together.”

The initial funding goal is $3 0 0 0, which w i l l be set aside for the shipping container pu rchase. Add itiona l mi lestones include delivering and placing t h e c o n t a i n e r, t h e n commissioning a mural for its exterior.

A book review series by Bec Volkofsky Oh the Golden Age of crime fic tion! Agatha, I see you and I appreciate you for inviting us all along to the theatrical puzzle t hat is And Then There Were None. I had a lot of fun counting the dif ferent ways a charac ter could cry out they have a “raving maniac”, “homicidal lunatic”, or a “madman” on the loose. So good.

My favourite trope is the fir m hand required to settle a person in the throes of hysteria – “thank you...I needed that.” This is the definitive locked-room myster y that has gone on to inspire other authors, including Lucy Foley’s The Guest List.

Fo l ey ’s 2 02 0 n ove l h a s t h e same isolated setting, characters with secrets, a storm that cuts ever yone of f, and a body. But it fails to provide the dramatic tension and interesting characters it needs to survive its attempt at subverting the madman figure.

Christie’s 1939 work can be used to consider the management of historic art that contains offensive content. I admit to being shocked at the original title and nurseryr hyme motif, and I appreciate that this situates the work, but I think if it remained, it would be a distraction from the intent of the novel. It is vital we don’t erase our history, but also important we ponder that art can be reflective of reality as well as an implied endorsement.

B o t h F o l e y a n d C h r i s t i e ’s wor k are helpful for anyone contemplating entering the writing competition adver tised in the Coonabarabran Times. I think, (and please note, it is just my thoughts and I have nothing to do with the competition except tr ying to summon the braver y to enter it myself ) that implied emotions are more enjoyable to read and do a far better job at

building dread.

“It feels personal, this storm. It feels as though it has saved all its fury for them.” Meh. “The storm increased. The wind howled against the side of the house.” Better.

“Enveloped in an aura of r ighte ous nes s and unyielding principles, Miss Brent sat in her crowded third-class carriage and triumphed over its discomfort and its heat.” Fantastic.

“So this is what worries me.

Why would Will keep a friend like Johnno around simply because of a s hared pas t? Unles s that past has some sort of hold over him.” As subtle as a dead fish to the face.

Both books delivered a surprising denouement, but only one left me with the urge to put on a pretty frock, merlot lipstick and host a murder-mystery night.

Which is what you want from a good whodunnit.

After three days when the maximum temperature exceeded 30 degrees in Perth for the first time in May since 1907, the warmer-than-normal days continued up to last weekend.

The mean maximum to date at Perth is 26.2 degrees – four degrees above normal – and may break the May 1998 record of the hottest May in 143 years of records.

That record hot May did set up a notably wetterthan-average winter and spring season in both Victoria and NSW. Gabo Island recorded a maximum temperature of 26.7 degrees, breaking the previous highest May temperature May of 26.6 degrees set in 2016.

Cape Otway recorded 26.5 degrees, the hottest in May since 27.8 degrees in 1904. Cape Otway recorded only 73mms during the first four months of this year, the driest since 51.8mms in 1923.

The January-to-April period of 1893 at Cape Otway was also very dry, with 91.5mms.

The rainfall records for both 1923 and 1893 showed excessive rainfall in our region, including Tasmania from June to well into the following

summer.

Further north into Queensland, it was relatively dry during the winter and spring seasons, but then heavy rain swamped the December to February period.

Most of Victoria and the Riverina have had their warmest May since 1947. Many places have recorded above-normal maxima every day for the first half of May since 1947.

In Melbourne, daily maxima exceeded normal for 16 days in succession – the longest in May since 24 days in 1947.

Many places in northern Victoria and the Riverina have recorded no rainfall up to 17-18 May. An upper-level disturbance earlier in the month brought isolated thunderstorms to few places.

Moree recorded 47.4mms, the wettest May day since 51.8mms in 1986. Moree has now received above-average rainfall for the three autumn months of this year after a dry January and February. This has happened only four other times since 1880, namely 1889, 1931, 1969 and 1989.

AROUND THE SCHOOLS Coonabarabran Public Cross country On a gloomy, drizzly Friday morning, students aged from eight years up gathered at the Coonabarabran golf course for the muchanticipated annual cross country.

Despite the overcast skies and light rain, the atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm and excitement as participants prepared to showcase their athletic skills.

As the race commenced, it was evident that the weather did not dampen the spirits of the athletes.

Students of all ages took to the course with energy and determination, demonstrating great sportsmanship throughout the event.

Encouraging cheers from fellow students, teachers, and parents resonated across the

course, fostering a supportive environment that motivated each participant to push their limits.

As the runners crossed the finish line, they were greeted with smiles and applause, celebrating not just their individual achievements, but also the collective effort of the entire group.

The cross-country event at the golf course was a resounding success, despite the less-than-ideal weather conditions.

The enthusiasm displayed by the students and the unwavering support from the golf club committee and volunteers were instrumental in creating a memorable experience for all involved.

This event not only highlighted the importance of physical

fitness, but also reinforced the values of sportsmanship and community spirit within our school.

Zone Soccer On Monday afternoon, Coonabarabran Public School hosted the Zone Soccer trials. There

was a good number of students from Coolah and CPS who attended the trials. They battled out a skills session and then a few games to eventually be selected.

Congratulations to the following students who have been selected to represent CPS as part of the Zone team in Tamworth next week at the North West Soccer trials: Cash Britton, Kaide Galvin, Jacob Cook and Alex Brown are all in the boys’ team.

Wren Stone and Sophie Aylett will join with a number of Coolah girls to form the girls’ team.

Six ladies did battle for the stableford event at the Coonabarabran Golf Club on Wednesday, 14 May. The winner on the day was Kerrie Ward, returning a score of 31 points on a count back from Lou Dowsett.

Balls were won by Lou Dowsett and Jan Keppie, 30 points.

The shot of the day went to Doreen Searle, who chipped onto the 11th green from 45 metres. The ball then tip-toed across the new turf patches, ran around to the back of the hole and, to her and her partner’s surprise, fell in – giving Doreen a great stableford score of four points!

The course continues to improve as a result of the ongoing volunteer work, which is greatly appreciated by the competitors.

The removal of dead trees, the collection of limbs and branches off the fairways, the continual mowing and attention to the putt areas – it is never

ending.

The day must come when they can lay down their shovels, rakes and other implements, stand back and admire their handiwork.

A full field of players is expected this Saturday, 24 May, for the men’s and ladies Par Championships.

In the 58th minute of the local derby between the Gulgong Terriers and the Dunedoo Swans played at Gulgong, the home side’s five-eight, Oliver Hollow, scored his side’s second try, bringing the score to 36-10 in favour of the visitors I ncred ibly, just 2 0 minutes later, that same score board was reading 40 to 36, but this time the Ter r iers were i n front after an amazing scoring blitz that was

completed by a chipand-chase effort from half-back Brad James with just two minutes remaining.

Just as the Terriers will be lamenting their defensive effort earlier in the game which saw Dunedoo get ahead 36 t o 6 , Swa ns’ players and supporters will be shaking the heads in disbelief as to how they could possibly let such a decisive lead disappear in such a short period of time, letting the Terriers in for six tries during what was a total collapse of their defensive structure.

Willoughby leads from the front The Coonabarabran Unicorns rugby-league sides faced an eager Narromine Jets on Saturday in the Castlereagh League competition, with the Jets out to prove a point.

In the ladies league-tag match, Coonabarabran commenced the game well, completing their first three sets without error. Team moral was high, despite a strong charge from the Narromine girls to take the lead going into half time.

Despite a niggling injury, Meg Walton played out of her skin, making tag after tag and scoring a try following an intercept pass she read perfectly.

Meg was deservingly awarded the Players’ Player for the match.

Anthea Karavas made a strong impact coming off the bench this week, bagging a try in what is becoming habitual for her.

Zoe Wark played an excellent defensive game and controlled the middle well.

Unfortunately, the Coona girls succumbed

to the Narromine ladies, however, they showed great promise and improvements are growing each week.

The men’s senior league game had been a hotly-anticipated contest all week. Both the Unicorns and Jets were sitting equal third on the ladder going into this game.

The Unicorns had a great start to the game, applying pressure and scoring first, off the back of some beautiful play.

Leading from the front, captain/coach Nick Willoughby set expectations high, delivering over 20 tackles and a try in the first half alone.

A calm head in Peter Watton returned to the Unicorns in the halves, placing precision kicks and showing experience.

Peter also picked up the Players’ Player mug.

The young guns of

the Coona team are really standing up and holding their own. Two freakish flick passes from Quade Milgate gifted the Unicorns two impressive tries, while Sam Pickette and Cody Howe have both proven their strength and heart despite playing against men double their age and size.

The Unicorns defeated Narromine in a tense finish, 28-20.

Next week, the Unicorns head to Baradine for a good old fashioned across-town showdown. This match up never disappoints, with plenty of pride on the line.

The ladies league tag match will kick off at 1.15pm, with the men’s first grade game set down to commence at 2.30pm.

Previous races contested had been no further than 1400 metres, however, the four-yearold gelding Naval Officer handled the step up to 1700 metres in the most impressive fashion.

Patiently ridden by Mathew Cahill, Naval Officer ($4.40 to $3.90) settled near the tail of the 12-horse field before unleashing a powerful finishing burst to win, running away by almost two lengths from Instead (Zoe Hunt, $13) and Crown Legend (Chad Lever, $9.50).

Pedalling the past on the Shearers Ride In a tribute to Australia’s rural heritage, riders of vintage bikes have retraced the journeys of the cycling shearers of the early 1900’s.

by LIZ CUTTS Twenty-four cyclists in the 2025 Shearers Ride set off from Baradine on Monday, 28 April, following the dusty tracks to farming properties in the Warrumbungles and Pilliga Forest or iginally taken by the resi l ient men w ho once rode p u s h b i kes b et we e n s h ea r i n g sheds, carrying little more than a swag, a comb and cutter and an iron will.

Organiser, Lyall Paull said that the spirit of the ride remains strong and interest in taking part in the five-day annual event has not diminished since the first Shearers Ride was held in 2014.

“We have riders from NSW and Queensland, including five new participants, which is great,” he said.

“We start and finish at Baradine and we are taking a similar route to last year – to Coonamble and then onto dirt roads to Gilgooma.

We return through the west Pilliga, making ‘Wooleybah’ sawmill our last stop.

“The aim is to ride around 50 kilometres each day.”

As well as the discomfor t of riding a vintage bike, many of the riders dress in period-style clothing to honour the determination and grit of the original shearers.

“It’s not just a physical challenge, it is mental too,” Mr Paull added.

“Riding these bikes over dirt roads in all-weather gives you just a taste of what those fellas went through more than a hundred years ago.

“But the weather now is good, although there has been some rain. Last year we got hammered with headwinds, which added to the challenge.

“We have two backup trucks and the bikes are simple to work on if something goes wrong. Most of the problems are punctures; one guy is riding a fixed wheel bike this year.

“There is a real camaraderie among the riders. Everyone is out here to honour a bit of forgotten history and to experience the land in a way most people never do.”

Australian Cotton Grower and High Achiever of the Year awards finalists announced Cotton Australia has announced the finalists for both the 2025 Bayer Cotton Grower of the Year award and the AgriRisk High Achiever of the Year award with the results to be announced at the Cotton Collective in Toowoomba in August.

There were five finalists from as far north as Dalby on Queensland’s Darling Downs and as far south as Spring Ridge on the Liverpool Plains in New South Wales, each grower highlighting excellence in farming practice and outstanding recent results in cotton production.

This year, each of the five finalists, nominated by their Cotton Grower Associations and fellow growers, will be considered for the Bayer Grower of the Year award and the AgriRisk High Achiever of the Year, with one recipient to be announced in each category.

Cotton Australia’s CEO Adam Kay said the nominees for this year’s top cotton industry awards are all highly deserving, with some encountering a challenging year particularly with the onset of rain at the start of picking.

“The awards are the Australian cotton industry’s top grower honours for the year, and they recognise a range of attributes including innovation, sustainability, water efficiencies, nutrition and soil health, and commitment to their own communities.

“This year the nominees represent a range of cotton growers with one producing only his third cotton crop while another family has been growing cotton for more than 30 years and are now fifth generation farmers.

“I am also pleased to say that all the nominees this year are family farms ranging in size from two full time employees to more than 60 across several farms, displaying the great diversity that Australian cotton farms are renowned for.”

The growers were nominated after winning regional awards or after recognition from other growers, impressed by their farming strategies and crop outcomes. The farms included in this year’s nominations include some with predominantly rain fed crops while others are fully irrigated, using a variety of irrigation methods.

Thomas and Julia Eather, Bellevue Pastoral Company, NSW Thomas Eather and his sister Julia are now taking on leading roles in their family’s farming business in Narrabri and the Riverina.

Their great-grandfather was a sheep farmer, and the family moved into cotton more than 30 years ago when Warren and Darren Eather (Thomas’s grandfather and father) started growing cotton on a small block at Bellevue. What began as 400 hectares has grown to 2400 hectares across all farms, reflecting the family’s strong growth mindset.

Early yields were around five bales per hectare—now they regularly reach 15, a threefold increase over three decades.

Thomas Popp, RMI ‘Springfield’, QLD Thomas Popp has worked full-time for Carrington Cotton since 1997, with cotton remaining central to his farming career. At RMI ‘Springfield’, the focus is on innovation to support long-term business and industry sustainability.

Workforce remains the biggest challenge for the family-owned operation, though

The family has long grown onions, sorghum, wheat and barley, but three years ago decided to branch into cotton—despite it being uncommon in their area.

Motivated by weed challenges and a desire to diversify, Matt sought advice and planted their first cotton crop. It was a tough start, with the crop hit by frost just days after planting.

Always looking to improve, they use drones for spraying and to stay ahead of weather events and defoliation timing, helping drive efficiency across the farm.

Tyson Armitage, Wamara, QLD Tyson Armitage runs Wamara near Cecil Plains, where he’s growing 230 hectares of irrigated cotton this season. His focus is on improving efficiency—reducing inputs like water, nutrition and labour while maintaining productivity.

One of Wamara’s key achievements has been in integrated pest management, having sprayed just once in the past three seasons. Water efficiency has also been a long-term focus, with significant savings achieved over the past six years. In-crop watering has been reduced to just two irrigations, using around 1.7 to 2 megalitres per hectare.

Hugh and Jock Brownhill, Merrilong Agricultural Company, Spring Ridge NSW Hugh and Jock Brownhill are directors of Merrilong Agricultural Company at Spring Ridge on the Liverpool Plains, where they grow 1200 hectares of dryland cotton and 320 hectares of irrigated cotton with a team of 13 full-time staff.

They draw on decades of family experience while taking the lead on high-level decisions. Strong teamwork is central to their operation, with a focus on open communication and shared goals.

Good seasonal timing, support from their team and favourable conditions help them stay on track to grow better and better yields every year.

SES calls for more volunteers To mark the start of National Volunteer Week, the NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) is encouraging people living in regional and rural communities to consider volunteering.

With more than 11,000 volunteers across the state, the NSW SES plays an important role in helping communities prepare for and respond to emergencies, including storms and floods.

NSW SES Commissioner Mike Wassing AFSM said National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognise the vital contributions of volunteers and invite more people to get involved.

“Our volunteers are everyday people doing extraordinary things. They are part of the fabric of their towns and communities,” Commissioner Wassing said.

“Volunteering with the NSW SES is a rewarding way to connect with others, develop new skills, and be there for your community when it matters.”

Commissioner Wassing said volunteering can be tailored to fit a variety of lifestyles, and that many people are surprised by the range of roles available.

“Whether you're interested in hands-on field work, community engagement, logistics, or support behind the scenes, there’s a role for you,” he said.

“You don’t need previous experience — just a willingness to learn and a commitment to your community.”

As part of National Volunteer Week, the NSW SES is also reminding communities to add a splash of orange to their outfits this Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW Day), held on Wednesday, May 21. WOW Day is a national day of thanks, where Australians are encouraged to wear orange in recognition of SES volunteers and their service.

“WOW Day is a moment to show visible appreciation for the volunteers who give their time and heart to help others,” Commissioner Wassing said.

“We’d love to see our communities turn

Bush fire risk in the RFS Liverpool Range district The Liverpool Range Rural Fire Service District comprises of the local government areas of Gunnedah Shire Council, Liverpool Plains Shire and Upper Hunter Shire.

Liverpool Range District covers a total area of 18,350 square kilometres including south of Gunnedah, the central area of the Liverpool Plains and north of the

southern boundary being Aberdeen of the Upper Hunter.

The major population centres in the District include Gunnedah, Quirindi, Scone, Merriwa and Murrurundi.

Included under the Liverpool Range Bush Fire Risk Management Plan is 70,247 hectares of National Parks and 36,670 hectares of State Forest.

How Liverpool Range Bush Fire Risk Management Committee assess risk Fire is a part of living in the Liverpool Range. It has been a part of this landscape for millions of years.

As our population and region changes, the risk of fires impacting on our community has

changed.

To understand the bush fire risk in the Liverpool Range, and help inform the best ways of managing and reducing the risk, we’ve looked at what’s important to local communities – including

where people live, as well as environmental, economic and cultural assets.

We look at the assets across the landscape, and using computer modelling, we have tested scenarios for possible fire conditions

to understand the impact on the community.

The Liverpool Range Draft Bush Fire Risk Management Plan is currently on exhibition until 5pm on Monday, May 26, 2025.

Recognising Benefits of volunteering important role of volunteers Volunteering is activity that has many benefits, for you and the community.

Almost 5 million people in NSW volunteer, contributing more than 1.5 billion hours which is valued at approximately $127 billion.

Research reveals that volunteering also benefits volunteers by reducing symptoms of depression, improving self-reported health and lowering mortality.

Volunteering expands people’s social networks, provides opportunities to gain valuable experience, and enables people to develop new skills which can lead to employment.

Reasons to volunteer Volunteering not only helps organisations but also allows individuals to: • Develop new skills, gain experience and have a chance to use those skills • Have a sense of purpose • Give back and make a difference • Get out and have fun.

Volunteering can be done face-to-face at a location near you or it can be done online.

It can be done on a regular basis, or occasionally, such as at a large event or gathering.

Volunteering can be flexible to suit your availability.

There are many reasons people volunteer, such as: • Connecting with other people • Supporting important causes or creating social impact • Learning about different cultures • Giving back to communities, organisations and not-forprofits

• Finding pathways to job, study or training opportunities • Developing new skills or getting experience to improve employment opportunities.

Defining volunteering Volunteering Australia defines volunteering as time willingly given for the common good and without financial gain.

There are three additional criteria which must be fulfilled for an activity to be considered volunteering: 1. Volunteering must not be exploitative or be used in place of paid employment – volunteers must willingly give their time.

2. Volunteering must be for the common good, directly or indirectly benefitting people outside the family or household or benefit a cause.

3. There should be no financial gain, excluding reimbursement or the good practice of a volunteer being recognised or rewarded.

Finding the right volunteering role for you Regardless of background, skills, experience or the amount of time you have for volunteering, there are different roles to suit everyone.

The first step to get ready is to think about: • The type of volunteering you would like to do • Your interests and passions, and the types of organisations you'd like to volunteer with • What you hope to get from the volunteer experience • How much time you give as a volunteer • How regularly you want to volunteer, for example one-off, weekly or monthly.

Getting started with volunteering There are many ways to find a place or organisation to volunteer, including: • Ask your friends and family what they do • Local council websites often have a community directory, and many also run a range of volunteering programs • Use the NSW Volunteering Recruitment Portal to find something suitable • Search and contact organisations or causes you are interested in, many list available opportunities on their websites • Explore volunteering opportunities with your local emergency services such as the NSW State Emergency Service or Rural Fire service.

Health benefits of volunteering Volunteering in your local community creates opportunities for social interaction, improves mood and increases happiness.

Volunteering offers people health and wellbeing benefits, including lower symptoms of depression and anxiety than people who don’t volunteer.

Volunteering not only benefits the community but also builds something called social capital.

This is the value you get from trust and community connections built on a shared set of values.

Through volunteering, people build stronger relationships, learn from each other, and feel more connected to their community.

Next Gen heralds new era of regional leadership The future of regional leadership - Next Gen – was successfully launched in Gunnedah earlier this month.

Hosted by the Gunnedah Chamber of Commerce, the event aimed to support, elevate, and champion the next generation of leaders in the region.

“From apprentices and tradies to young professionals, creatives, business owners, and community-minded dreamers, Next Gen was built for those aged 16–35 who are ready to step forward and for the mentors, connectors, and businesses willing to walk alongside them,” chamber of commerce president CJ Baldry Adams said.

“The idea is simple but bold: if we want a thriving future for our region, we must invest in the people who will lead it.”

Ms Baldry Adams said young people stood alongside business owners, industry professionals, and local legends, all united by a shared belief – that the future of doing business in rural NSW must be shaped by those who live and lead it.

“We were privileged to hear from a powerhouse line-up of speakers, including Michael Broekman, David Errington, Susie Slack-Smith, Tom Gayford, Mark Booth, Brooke Watts, and Aaron Kumar,” she said.

“Each one brought raw insight, real-life experience, and deep

Police appeal for information over aggravated break-ins Police are appealing for information as an investigation commences into two aggravated break-ins in Moree.

About 1.45am on Monday, May 19, police attended a motel on Alice Street, Moree, following reports of two aggravated break-ins.

Officers attached to New England Police District were told four people – one armed with a machete – forced entry into one room that was unoccupied at the time.

The group forced entry into a second room where they threatened the 57-year-old male occupant, demanding his car keys before leaving in his Mitsubishi SUV. The man did not require medical treatment.

A short time later, police were patrolling when they sighted the Mitsubishi driving dangerously and attempted to stop it on Warialda Street. When the vehicle failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated, however, it was terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.

About 2.35am, police were patrolling when they again sighted the Mitsubishi and initiated a pursuit. A short time later the SUV was located abandoned on Grace Street, Moree and was seized for forensic examination.

As inquiries continue, anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Moree Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
