Jumping to new heights A newly-renovated equestrian cross country track will be a star feature at this year’s North West Equestrian Expo. by MOLLY SHANNON The Coonabarabran course was upgraded after experts advised Warrumbungle Eventing and North West Equestrian Expo committees to extend the track. Both organisations collaborated to introduce some exciting new changes that Richard Blackman, president of the Warrumbungle Eventing and Expo’s cross country chief steward, is eager to showcase. Warrumbungle Eventing Club was established in 2012 and has since expanded to include a strong and growing group of riders and committee members. Although the club is separate from the annual Expo event, the two are closely connected, with both Mr Blackman and his wife, Shaen, having been involved in the Expo for many years. Warrumbungle Eventing is also associated with Eventing NSW, with the club hosting and organising trials and training days in Coonabarabran throughout the year, attracting between 130 to 140 riders to its annual event. The cross country upgrades were made to refresh the track and create a safer environment for riders, including the relocation of the start and finish line to outside the Coonabarabran Showground. “For many years, riders have been starting and finishing at the sheep pavilion,” Mr Blackman said. “The starting box was on one side of the sheep pavilion, the finish posts were on the other, and experts from away suggested we should take it outside the showground. “So that’s what we’ve done, because it’s a bit of a narrow area inside the showground and not enough room for riders to finish.” An extension has been made to the course, along with the relocation of the practice arena, with warm-up fences, to outside of the showground. “This will probably be the first run with the whole thing completed and we’ll see how it works – if there are any adjustments to make, we will make them,” he said.
While construction on the course had a few stops and starts, Mr Blackman said that all together the upgrades only took around three weeks to complete, including the addition of several new jumps. “There’s a ditch jump out the back that is pretty spectacular – and it looks great to see riders going over it and jumping it well,” Mr Blackman said. “We’ve also altered the water jump to make it safer for competitors and to give the course designer more options. “We’re pretty proud of the whole thing.” Riders and horse welfare are important to Warrumbungle Eventing, so keeping up with course guidelines is taken seriously. At each event, technical delegates measure the course to ensure it fits the requirements of the Equestrian Federation of Australia. They also supervise the running of events. M r B l a c k m a n s a i d h e wa s p ro u d of Coonabarabran’s cross country track, describing it as a unique course that attracts many riders to town. “Our course is different to other courses – a lot of the other courses around NSW and Australia are on pretty open ground, whereas ours is quite well-timbered,” Mr Blackman said. “This makes it more interesting for the visitors who’ve only ever competed on an open paddock and on a reasonably level course, as ours runs up around a hill and there are a couple of creek crossings as well.” Mr Blackman takes great pride in Expo and what it contributes to Coonabarabran. “These events do bring a lot of people to our town and while obviously a lot of them camp on the showground, I’ve been told that the motels are always full,” Mr Blackman said. “The visitors spend money in the town when they’re here, and that’s a good thing too.” With the upgrades now complete, both organisations are eager to see riders take on the new course when the 2025 North West Equestrian Expo kicks off its five-day program tomorrow – Friday, 30 May.
