Worker shortage felt locally A shortage of workers in Coonabarabran has been so pronounced of late that one business owner is taking extreme measures to attract staff. by CHRIS WARD E m m a n ue l D i m it r y, f ro m Coona Chicks, is considering the unusual step of recruiting a worker from overseas. He said his hands were tied and he was left with no other option. “ I t’s j u s t c ra z y at t h e moment. There’s been times we’ve h a d to s h o r te n o u r opening hours because we can’t get the staff,” he said. “The staff we do have at the moment are amazing, they do a wonderful job - but we need more workers. “It’s really impacting our business. Because we have been short on staff our wait t i m es have been a l it t l e longer and then we get more complaints, but people don’t realise what’s actually going on in the background. We’re working really hard and long hours.” “ Someth i ng has g ot to give and that’s why I looked into the option of bringing a worker over here.” As par t of the deal M r Dimitr y said he would pay for the worker’s Visa, travel expenses and provide accommodation. In turn, it means he will have an extra full-time staff member helping to run the business for at least a 12-month period. Sa mantha Ba r tl et t, f rom Craz y Sam’s, said she had experienced a similar situation with staffing. “It seems to be the same everywhere,” she said.

“ I get the feel i ng that people just don’t really want to wo r k a ny m o re. T hey’ve been paid too much for too long to sit at home. “From my experience there’s no worker shortage, it’s more a shortage of people that want to work.” C a r l o’s I GA m a n a g e r Naomi Milsom said her roster had also been stretched thin. “At th e m o m ent we j us t need people to turn up,” she said. “It’s been hard to attract good staff. “But that seems to be the case in most places.” Ma ree Rol ph, f rom the Ambe r Cou r t Motel, has struggled in recent times to attract cleaners. She al so bel ieves the G o v e r n m e n t ’ s C O V I D -19 payments are at least partly to blame for the crisis, but she also put pressure on Warrumbungle Shire Council to make the local area more attractive. “I get people that apply fo r j o b s a n d co m e fo r a n interview, but when you ring them they turn the job down,” she said. “It would be good if Council did something to bring young workers to the area.” A s teady s t rea m of j obs are available for the taking in Coonabarabran, from two hours per week through to fulltime permanent roles.
