It’s curtains up for Coona’s cinema New organisers of Flix in the Stix are dusting off the projector and unravelling the big screen, to showcase the bright lights of film in Coonabarabran.

by GEORGIA SPENCE The first showing will be entwined with the Dark Sky Awakens Festival on Saturday, 4 May, meaning science fiction films are on the table.

Inspired by their sons’ passions for film, Steve and Sally Turner decided to revamp the locallyloved screenings.

Throughout the Dark Sky Awakens Festival, Mr Turner said punters would be able to enjoy four films, from ET to Flash Gordon – with more to be approved.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a film has not been shown at Flix in the Stix theatre in almost four years.

The Turner family wanted to bring the monthly meet up back to Coonabarabran and provide the town with an opportunity to gather, reminisce on old classics and discover alternative movies.

“I am hoping it is something the town finds interesting. We will show a wide range of genres once it is up

and running,” Mr Turner said.

“Our sons are very keen on films, from old classics that people might not have seen on the big screen, to more mainstream movies, as well as off-beat, alternative films and animation.

“Films help my sons relate to the world as they both have learning difficulties. We want to support their passion and learning endeavours.”

After the initial showings in May, the Turner family hope to open the Flix in the Stix cinema to movie buffs once a month.

Mr Turner has reviewed the equipment and despite years of inaction, the components remain in good condition.

He is currently in the process of gaining permissions from distributors to show films publicly and will publicise once approval has been gained.

The Flix in the Stix cinema is located in Dramatics Society building next to Coonabarabran Town Hall.

Steve and Alex Turner are excited to bring back movies to the Flix in the Stix Theatre in Coonabarabran.

Conservation crusader honoured The Australian Wildlife Society recently recognised Tanya O’Donoghue, for her vital efforts in native wildlife conservation and rehabilitation in the Warrumbungle region.

Tanya O’Donoghue has been recognised by the Australian Wildlife Society for helping to rehabilitate native wildlife.

Ms O’Donoghue is the founder of the volunteer, charity organisation, Wa r r umbungle Wildlife Rescue a nd R ehabi l itation Incorporated ( W W RR Inc.) which was established in 2022.

W hile car ing for a nd rehabi l itati ng native wildlife can be rewarding, it demands considerable time, effort, expertise, and skill.

Volunteers must be deeply committed, as they play a vital role in conserving Australian wildlife populations.

Ms O’ Donoghue exemplifies such ded ication , hav i ng devoted her l i fe t o advocating for Australian wildlife.

who cover a vast area of the Warrumbungle region and central west.

The National Wildlife Rehabilitation Award for 2023 was awarded to Ms O’Donoghue for her efforts in stabilising and releasing Australian wildlife in the area.

Dur ing her f irst 30 years of caring for n at i v e w i l d l i f e , M s O ’ D o n o g hu e h a d t o travel to Dubbo Zoo for wildlife rehabilitation, however, she found the travel times for injured animals was too long.

Often animals died or suffered more trauma due to the distance, so she undertook the sevenyear journey to obtain her rehabilitation licence.

W W R R a l s o rehabilitates wildlife and cares for them until they are emotionally mature enough to be released.

Ms O’Donoghue said the lack of response from those who witness an injured or dying animal was one of her biggest concerns.

“A nimals shouldn’t have to lose the quality of care they deserve.

Pe ople ne ed t o t a ke responsibility for their actions and have some compassion,” Ms O’Donoghue said.

“If you hit an animal, take it off the road. If it is injured, ring someone.

You might think someone else will do it, but we are all someone, we can all help.

“Animals have been travel l i ng cer ta i n pathways long before roads. They’re genetically programmed to travel that way.

“The lack of care takes a toll on us as carers. It is sad that animals have to become endangered in order for people to do something.”

Ms O’Donoghue would like to see councils place more signage on the hot spots where kangaroos and other native wildlife frequently pass.

She also said drivers should give wildlife a chance, by reducing their speed when driving at night.

Throughout her career Ms O’Donoghue has seen populations of kangaroos and koalas disappear.

She saw first-hand the impact bushfires in 2017 had on native wildlife and their habitats, however, she saw more populations die out during the fiveyear drought.

“No one cared about us in the west during the drought. We were too far away from the cities,” Ms

O’Donoghue said. “ Popu l at ion s h ave started to make a come back where the f ires went through, but you’ll find the further west you go, populations are still struggling. That’s where the drought hit the hardest.”

Witnessing the lack of support and loss from the drought is what pushed Ms O’Donoghue to open a local facility.

She hopes the award and recognition from the Australian Wildlife S o c iet y w i l l pr ov ide a bigger platform t o advo c at e for a n i ma l rehabi l itation a nd encourage more local volunteers.

The award recognises Austra l ia n w i ld l i fe as a vital part of the ecosystem and celebrates those who put in the ef for t t o u ndersta nd the impor tance of conservation.

Yours etc., Brooky Coonabarabran 2357 (25.03.2024) Shocked I’m shocked to find that a member or members of the public have stolen a display that was set up on 8 March on the top lawn of the Visitor Information Centre, Coonabarabran, by Vaccine Injuries Australia.

The display was of Australian vaccinated citizens who trusted their doctors and trusted the governments’ COVID-19 narrative.

It was not a protest.

The A4 pictures that were stolen and hopefully not destroyed, belong to Australian family members who have identified themselves to the general public to help them realise that the so-called vaccine was only provisionally approved by the Therapeutic Goods Association (TGA). There was not informed consent because doctors were not allowed to question the process or the product in question, or they would be disciplined by their regulatory body – Australian Health Practitioners Regulatory Association ( AHPRA).

These A4 laminated pictures and stories belong to these family members.

What kind of people are you? Are you the type of people that kick over graves at the cemetery? Do you hate your neighbour’s dog when it’s barking?

Well, I hope you’re sitting at home feeling like a community legend, but, at some stage, you reflect on these families that have sick or deceased relatives from vaccine injuries and had their lives devastated. But, they still have the courage to share their stories with strangers.

We will continue to be their voice and for them to be heard.

Shame on you. Shame on you.

Youth crime not a reflection of our communities Youth crime has once again been the focus of much media attention these past few weeks, after the NSW Government announced a $26.2 million package to tackle regional youth crime.

While Moree has been the focus with a $13.4 million investment into a targeted pilot program, a number of other communities across my electorate have also been hurting as a result of increased anti-social behaviour from our young people.

Tow ns l i ke Moree, D ubbo, B ou rke, Walgett and Coonamble are among those communities that have been calling out for help to tackle a worrying rise in criminal activities, and so I welcome any practical solutions that will reduce the instances of juvenile crime and make people feel safe in their homes.

However, I worry that this funding will just end up being yet another band-aid solution that fails to address the underlying problem. And that is, what is driving our children and teenagers to be out on the streets and turning to crime in the first place?

I ’m regularly talking to community leaders, Elders, councillors and service providers and they will all tell you the same thing – that this issue stems from the home.

Often, these children are out on the streets at all hours of the night because, for many of them, the streets are safer than their own home. It’s unimaginable to think about some of the atrocities our children are being subjected to or witnessing, but it’s the grim reality for too many.

Sadly, it’s been happening for decades.

And until we address the fact that all too often small children are left in dangerous situations when they should be removed, nothing will change.

It’s time we address the elephant in the room, which is that authorities are hesitant to intervene in these cases because of the sensitivities and complexities surrounding the Stolen Generations and other forced historical adoption practices.

While I agree that removing a child from their family should be a very last resort, there are times when this would be in the best interests of the child.

I strongly believe that the rights of the child should always come before those of the parent. As adults, we have a responsibility to care for our children and ensure their basic needs are met. If a child’s rights or safety is being violated, then it’s up to us as adults to protect that child and remove them from harm.

I k now t her e a r e m a ny E lder s i n our communities – aunties and uncles, grandparents and great grandparents – who are caring for children whose parents can’t look after them and I’d like to acknowledge all those selfless people for doing their best to maintain a normal life for those kids.

I’d also like to acknowledge all the positive work that is being done in our communities by fantastic organisations like the Clontarf Foundation, LeaderLife in Dubbo, FlatTrack in Moree, Down the Track in Lake Cargelligo, Boys to the Bush, and many others. Real changes are being made by those grassroots programs that are run by passionate locals.

Since I’ve been in this job, there has been a significant increase in the number of Indigenous teenagers who are completing Year 12, undertaking trades, apprenticeships and tertiary education, and stepping up to be community leaders. It’s programs like Clontarf that are making that happen, which is wonderful to see.

I believe education is the key to empowering our children to aspire to a better life for themselves. That is how we can begin to break the cycle of intergenerational trauma and welfare dependency. And once we break that cycle, things like crime will almost certainly reduce.

It’s a deeply complex and complicated issue that will not be fixed overnight, or by a bucketload of money. It’s not black and white and it’s not just an Indigenous issue.

But the earlier we can intervene and ensure our children feel safe and loved and have access to a good education, the better the outcomes will be.

That’s why I believe we need to focus on more early intervention initiatives for children in preschool and early primary school. Often, by the time these children are in high school, it’s too late.

I do commend the NSW Government on its investment in early intervention and prevention programs. The funding for a new

bail accommodation and support service could be a real game changer in Moree.

However, I question whether throwing more money at some of the existing youth organisations will make any difference.

There’s numerous organisations across my electorate that have already been tasked with the job of supporting young people for many years, and they just don’t seem to be working.

Hopefully, the new action plan and sixmonth service review that’s part of this funding will improve accountability and delivery of these services. But, on top of that, there needs to be an audit into where all the state and federal funding has gone over the years and what has been achieved with that money. Until these organisations are held to account, nothing will change.

Finally, I’d just like to say that while youth crime is a serious issue in communities right across the Parkes electorate, it does not define them. One of the most disappointing things about this whole issue is that it has once again brought attention to our towns for all the wrong reasons.

Our towns are being tainted by city media as “crime capitals” where locals are “living in fear” of “out-of-control children”. There are certainly instances of this, but that is not the overall sense I get when I travel around my electorate. I see communities thriving with new businesses opening up, industries expanding and endless opportunities on the horizon.

Communities in the Parkes electorate shou ld be ma k i ng news about a l l the good things happening like innovation in agriculture, local achievements and sporting success. Instead, that’s all being overshadowed by the criminal actions of a minority.

We must work together to address the complex and often distressing reasons young people are turning to crime, but at the same time we should not forget the people who make our communities so diverse, vibrant and thriving. It is these people who I believe hold the key to creating a community that can offer the strong foundations our youth need to succeed.

The gift of the gavel Hamish Fauchon has embraced the rural tradition of livestock sales, by participating in the Young Auctioneer Competition at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

T h i s ye a r H a m i s h, w h o heads up livestock sales for Davidson Cameron and Co. in Coonabarabran, made his return to the Royal Easter Show, with more focus and insight into the competition fol low i ng his i naugu ral appearance in the event in 2023.

He was pitted against nine other young auctioneers in their early twenties and said he felt more confident than the previous year.

Although Hamish did not receive the win this year, he came out with stronger connections and said it was an opportunity to grow his name and business.

The competition ask s finalists to conduct three live sales of the prize-winning Sydney Royal Steer stock to high-profile buyers.

The aim is the get the best possible price for vendors, while competitors are judged by industry representatives.

J udges a re asked to focus on cl a r it y, d iction, manner and livestock-value knowledge.

“It was a ver y tight competition. I made a few small errors, which likely cost me the end result,” Hamish said.

“However, it is all part of the experience. Competing in Sydney can put a fair bit of pressure on. I wanted to do the best I could for the business and myself. “ I l i ke th e atm os p h e re and adrenaline r ush of auctioneering – it is great.”

Hamish has been working in the industry for six years and in the lead up to the competition, he attended the weekly prime and store cattle sales in Gunnedah.

He said he had been interested in selling sheep and cattle since he was a child.

“On our way to school, my little brother and I would practice selling stock while on the bus. I always had the dream it would be my career,” he said.

Hailing from Tamwor th, Hamish relocated to Coonabarabran three years ago.

Expressing his commitment to the community, he aims to remain in Coonabarabran, act i ve l y eng ag i ng a nd supporting the town while establishing his clientele.

He aspires to participate in the Sydney Royal Young Au ct i o n e e r Co m p et i t i o n i n 2 0 2 5, e m p h a s i s i n g h i s dedication to refining his skills by focusing on the finer details of his performance.

Exploring eggcelent traditions Full moons, ancient symbolism and debates between science and religion, is what allows us to eat many a chocolate egg in celebration of Easter.

by GEORGIA SPENCE Easter is time welcomed by all Australians, of all nationalities, ages and religions.

The holiday is a religious-based event and is celebrated in a number of ways and, for some, it is seen as an extra few days off work, or extra pay.

Since 2017, Easter has fallen on a date in April, however, this year Easter begins in March.

The March dates have led the public to question – why so early?

The answer lies in the cycles of the moon, similar to many other

religious celebrations.

Easter is held on the Sunday following the first full moon, after the spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere.

The spring equinox occurs when there is the same amount of night and day – a balance between dark and light.

L o n g b e fo r e t h e a d ve n t o f Christianity, Pagans celebrated the equinoxes and solstices.

T h ey b e l i eve d t h e p a t te r n s of nature were sacred and the emergence from w inter was celebrated by the Pagans, as spring bought new life.

The hare was said to be a symbol of the Pagan goddess of spring and fertility – this could explain the origins of the Easter Bunny.

The theme of new life continues to be celebrated from the perspective of Christ and what is said in the Bible.

On a day known as Good Friday, the Bible said Christ was crucified and died on the cross. Jesus Christ was then resurrected from the dead on Easter Sunday.

There is much symbolism in the way Australians celebrate Easter and what one chooses to believe is up to their discretion.

Due to the destruction the rabbit has caused to Australian agriculture, many Australians do not like to encourage the representation of the bunny.

Instead, the native and endangered Easter Bilby takes the limelight, with its long nose and ears similar to a rabbit.

T h e Wa r r u m b u ng l e N at i o na l Pa r k is al so a popula r spot fo r visitors during Easter, as numbers generally peak throughout the weekend, taking advantage of the scenic walks and pleasant weather conditions.

How one chooses to celebrate Easter in Australia often highlights an opportunity to come together.

Locally, it is a time to recognise what Coonabarabran has to offer.

Pilliga Bilbies burrowing blitz The Bilby, Australia’s answer to the Easter bunny, is reinvigorating the Pilliga Forest landscape with a digging frenzy.

by LIZ CUTTS The Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC), managers of the massive feral predatorfree area established in the Pilliga Forest near Narrabri in 2018, say that a recent population census shows that the Bilby population is expanding in their established forest haven.

Following the rei ntroduction i nt o the P i l l iga Forest Conservation Area, the long-eared marsupials have dispersed throughout the fenced area, with ecolog ists witnessing a burrowing frenzy in the last 12 months. According to

wildlife ecologist, Dr Tim Henderson, Bilby burrows are completely transforming the landscape.

“They are popping up everywhere, even on our access tracks – which can make it a little difficult for us to get around, but it’s great to see,” Dr Henderson said.

“All this burrowing is reinv igorating the l a n d s c a p e , a n d i t ’s not just Bilbies which benefit. We sometimes see multiple species using Bilby burrows, including Golden Bandicoots and Burrowing Bettongs.

“Bilbies will normally dig a single burrow, then Burrowing Bettongs will come in and renovate

it into a multi-entrance complex. This level of earthworks is incredible.”

In the fourth year of the annual AWC Bilby Census, populations were surveyed at AWC’s Mt Gibson (WA), Newhaven ( N T ) , Yo o k a m u r r a (SA) and Scotia (NSW) wildlife sanctuaries as well as P illiga State Conservation Area and Mallee Cliffs National Park, where AWC works i n pa r t ner sh ip w ith NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).

Since the 2023 census, the Bilby population at Newhaven has dramatically expanded throughout the fenced, safe haven, while in the P illiga, Bi lbies have d ispersed f rom the smaller breeding area into the wider, fenced area. At Yookamurra, Bi lby nu mber s h ave doubled since the end of the drought in 2020.

The Bilby is an iconic Australian marsupial, instantly recognisable by its long-pointed snout, long ears, soft grey fur and striking black and white tail. The key to successfully reintroduce the regionally-extinct Greater Bilby into the P illiga has been the establishment of the massive fenced, predatorPhoto: AWC free area.

“ These prolific foragers and d iggers play an important role as ecosystem engineers, turning over 20 tonnes of soil annually through burrowing and digging for food,” said senior wildlife ecologist, Dr Vicki Stokes. “ Their digging improves water infiltration and creates fer tile microhabitats where plant seeds can germinate.

“The Bilbies, with their engineering colleagues, the Bettongs, have turned over a lot of soil in their search for food and when digging burrows. These activities will improve the ecosystem health of the Pilliga forest over time.”

D u r i ng the re cent Pilliga population survey, the team encountered several baby Bilbies. “ Two of the female Bilbies had tiny baby Bilbies (called joeys) in their pouches,” added Dr Stokes. “ We ’ v e a l s o h ad increasing Bilby activity on motion-sensor cameras across the fenced area, indicating that the population is doing well.”

With Easter falling early in 2024, it coincides with the next round of Bilby surveys underway throughout March at several sites.

Spotlight on seniors Charity race gallops Cooinda Coonabarabran recently held its 64th Seniors Week, celebrating the role and contributions of older individuals within the town.

Cooinda organised two main events throughout the week, with the first event featuring an audiovisual presentation of Banjo Paterson poetry.

The second event was hosting a visit from the Coonabarabran History Group, where members showcased their cherished and historical items, alongside a slideshow.

Cooinda’s leisure and lifestyle team leader, Sharon Edmondstone sa id B a rba ra Hy nd s captivated the audience w ith a stor y about a family heirloom.

It was explained how the nearly century-old book survived through va r ious “ i nt r ig u i ng ” experiences.

Ms Edmondstone said the week was important to older individuals and provided an opportunity for socia l isi ng a nd reminiscing. “ O u r s en ior c om mu n it y member s may feel overlo oked , but dedicating a week specifically for them helps rein force thei r sense of value and enhances emotional well-being,” she said.

“The aim of Seniors We e k i s t o s h i n e a spotlight on our esteemed older community members, fostering new friendships and offering activities that promote participation, enjoyment, and fun. “ The slideshow presentation was excellent and sparked

a wave of reminiscence among the attendees.”

A n a fternoon tea was also enjoyed and Mrs Edmondstone said it fostered further camaraderie and connection among attendees.

Coonabarabran Jockey Club’s first race meet of the year is expected to embrace community spirit, as the funds raised are donated towards the Cancer Council.

Coonabarabran R acecourse w i ll be honouring the Cancer Council’s catchphrase “Do It For Cancer,” on Saturday, 6 April.

Punters should expect to embrace a sea of pink throughout the six-race card.

Fashions on the Field will be held, showcasing the best-dressed man, woman and child, with a special award for pink ensembles.

A further highlight will be the participation of the Coonabarabran Cancer Support Group, providing valuable in formation and support for those impacted by cancer.

Coonabarabran Jockey Club committee member, Sarah Baglee said the day would be full of horse racing, fashion and the warmth of community. “ It is a day of remembering those who h ave b e en i mpac t e d by cancer, those going

through cancer and the embracing of a cure for cancer,” Mrs Baglee said. “ Ever yone knows someone who has gone through cancer and we want to support each other. “ P i n k is genera l ly associated with breastc a ncer awa reness , however, we felt it best represented happiness, joy, community spirit and coming together.”

R ecent rain has refreshed the racecourse and temperatures are expected to cool before the race meet, bringing welcomed relief after a hot summer.

The tearooms will be in operation, as well as the usual barbecue, TAB and bar.

D onations t o the Cancer Council are also welcomed at the event.

For those who ca n not make it, Mrs Baglee said the QR codes on the posters around town lead to the donation link.

The last charity race meet organised by the Jockey Club was in 2013, following the Wambelong bushfire.

Mrs Baglee said that event raised close to

$90,000 for local families who had been impacted.

“As a committee, we were genuinely touched by something we could for the community,” Ms Baglee said.

“For us, these charity events are about giving back. “ Our race days consist of community participation and help.

We all work together and, in the end, the club does not prof it – the community does.”

The remainder of the year appears promising for the Coonabarabran Jockey Club, as they aim to maintain community connections and continue orga n isi ng fam i lyfriendly events.

The winter race meet will be held in July, with the annual Coona Cup held later in the year, during October.

T he Jockey Club is also looking for any information on how long the committee has been running.

M rs Baglee said it may be coming up to a monumental anniversary, meaning a monumental celebration may be on the cards.

Kids’ unusual pets on show Lizards, dogs, colourful chickens and even a yabby were some of the entries in a curious contest at this year’s Baradine Show.

by LIZ CUTTS The popularity of the children’s most unusual small pet competition was demonstrated w it h t he nu m b e r o f youngsters rolling-up with their strange pets, vying for a prize at the show held on Saturday, 16 March.

Categories included

the cutest pet, cleverest pet, fluffiest animal and the smallest animal.

Judge, Ian McNaught said it was an entertaining competition and great to see so many children taking part. “ T here were w ide rang ing entries from dogs to very colourful chooks and lizards, and even a g rasshopper,”

Ian said.

“All the kids had fun and were delighted to receive a prize.”

Water restrictions level up Coonabarabran is now under level two water restrictions, as Timor Dam currently sits at 60 per cent capacity.

Under level two water restrictions, households must comply to consuming 240 litres of water a day, per person.

An odds and evens system is now is place, meaning gardens may only be watered every second day between 6am to 9am and 6pm to 9pm.

Within the restrictions, an address with an odd number can water gardens on odd days and even addresses can be watered on even days.

Gardens may be watered using watering systems such as non-fixed sprinklers, hand-held hoses, drip systems, soaker hoses and microsprays.

“The dam is declining due to minimal rainfall in the catchment and high water usage by residents,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council mayor, councillor Ambrose Doolan.

“Residents are reminded that these water restrictions are in place for a

reason and it is important to preserve water usages, where possible.

“Council appreciates residents’ ong o ing e ff ort s t o co m p ly wit h these water restrictions and the Warrumbungle Water team will continue to monitor water supply levels closely.”

Level one water restrictions will continue to be in place and enforced throughout Baradine, Binnaway, Merrygoen and Mendooran.

Council will continue to monitor the level of the Castlereagh River closely, as well as the demand for water in Baradine.

Efficient water usage can involve checking for leaks, reducing shower time, using a full load in the washing machine and dishwasher, and mulching the garden to keep more water in the ground.

At the public school, students and staff had an out-of-uniform

day with the theme of “orange” – the colour representative of harmony.

Te a c h e r, A l l i s o n Crawley said students enjoyed a Ha r mony Week lesson inside their classrooms where they l e a r n e d to e m b ra ce harmony through discussion, craft or writing.

“The kids were asked what har mony would l o o k l i ke i n a s c h o o l

environment and they we re sayi ng it wa s w h e re eve r yo n e was accepted for their differences,” Mrs Crawley said.

“T h e re i s a q uote I liked and it explained harmony well. It was, ‘We don’t get harmony when ever ybody s i ng s the sa m e note.

O n l y d i f fe r e n t n ote s harmonise’.”

Coonabarabran Girl Guides also celebrated

At the park, Guides and l eade r s ta l ked to I n d i g e n o u s a r t i s t s Wa r w i ck Ke e n a n d Daniel Evans, who are currently creating sculptures for Neilson Park and a mural under Mary Jane Cain bridge.

Baradine church celebrates centenary Baradine’s St John’s Catholic Church has marked a milestone event nearly 100 years to the day from when the building was dedicated and opened.

by LIZ CUTTS Church histor y and the enduring faith of the communit y were celebrated when parishioners and former residents gathered at a celebratory Mass and display of memorabilia at St John’s School on Sunday, 17 March.

Bishop Michael McKenna, from Bathu r st,took the commemorative liturgy, assisted by Father Francis Muhenda. “ B i s h o p M c Ke n n a talked about those who have joined and been part of this community ove r t h e ye a r s a n d hopeful ly those who will worship in the church into the future,” said organising team member, Kim Tym. “He mentioned how special our whole community is.

“It was great to see t h e s c h o o l s t u d e nt s involved in the Mass when they brought up some of the artefacts from our history during the service – it was an important contribution to the celebration. “ It was l ovel y to see families return to Baradine for the event and those from other denominations who celebrated with us. In some cases, there were three generations of former residents who used to worship at the church and/or attend the school.

“During our search of sacramental records, we found information on peop l e w ho had been ma r r ied in the church, so we were able to have a lovely display of wedding dresses and photographs.

“We were fortunate enough to have Rae Ta s s e l l’s b e a ut i f u l dress she wore at her wedding 70 years ago on display, as well as Nea Worrell’s dress she wo re i n the chu rch nearly 50 years ago.

“We tried to delineate between the school and the parish in the displays, which is difficult to do because t h ey a r e s o c l o s e l y connected, which is lovely.”

M r s Ty m s a i d t h a t the church underwent some infrastr uctu re upgrades, which were completed in time for the centenary event. “ We h a d a n ew ceiling put in, doors put on, painting done and even some dimmable lights installed,” added Mrs Tym. “It is lovely to see the church get a bit of a revamp; it is a great achievement.

Historically Along with the adjoining Catholic School, the church is associated historically with the development of the town.

The timber building of the original church of St John the Baptist, consecrated i n 190 3 on the same site, was replaced with the cu r re nt g ot h i c - s t y l e

rendered brick building and external buttress walls in 1924.

Like many other public buildings in Baradine, the money re q u i re d to f u n d i t s construction was raised by public subscription, hard work and locallyraised loans.

Publican Tom Harford, postmaster Ernie Ford, A. Ford and Miss Sophia Cooper are listed as guarantors for a loan with the Bank of NSW, which was negotiated to hasten the church’s construction.

This loan was re n e g ot i ated a s ex t ra funds were required to build the convent and set up the school.

In 1927 the general debt on the complex had grown to £1,800.

Parish priest, Father Loneragan was the dr iving force behind the building of the new church. He is remembered as both a popular, hard-working pr iest and a g reat builder. Several other churches and convents were built in the parish during his incumbency.

Opening T h e M ud g ee Guardian issue of 13 March, 1924 reported on the opening of the building.

‘A t B a r a d i n e , o n Sunday, 16th March, at 10am, the ceremony of dedication and o pen i n g of th e n ew Cathol ic Church wi ll be per formed by Ver y Rev. Dr. O’Reilly, President of St. John’s College, University of Sydney, after which a special address will be delivered. At 4pm Dr. O’Reilly will open a new church at Binnaway’.

O n 6 J u n e , 19 2 6 , at the request of Father Loneragan, a co m m u n i t y of t h re e sisters was chosen to o p e n a Ca t h o l i c school in Baradine. The three sisters were Sr M. Mechtilde (superior), Sr M. Koska (principal) and Sr M. Therese.

Former teachers at the school were district residents Mar y Casey and Esme Rice.

School classes commenced a month later.

Upper primary cl a s ses we re ta ug ht in the original timber church building, a small building situated where th e sch o o l b e l l n ow hangs.

Enrolment when the school started was 72 ch i l d re n , w i t h s o m e classes taught in the present-day church.

In those days, the curriculum ta u g h t by t h e n u n s included typewriting, bookkeeping and shorthand, as well as pai nti ng, stenci l l i ng, n e e d l ewo r k a n d, of course, the three R’s.

From 1926 until 1975 individual children were taught to play the piano and violin, with excellent results in the various examinations for which they entered.

were ex tended to include a secondar y d e pa r t m e nt, w it h S r M. Basil appointed the

first secondary teacher.

Fourteen children were enrolled and they were taught in the back of

t h e p res e nt ch u rch .

Sister Loyola was the last secondary teacher on staff.

The first purposebuilt school consisting of th ree class rooms, an office, library, and

a large enclosed verandah was built in 1958 and is still in use today.

From the traditional custodians of the land to those who have come from many countries around the world, this has also been reflected in Sarah’s Yuu la raay, w ith ou r menu bringing everyone together and featuring d i she s f r om va r iou s c o u n t r i e s i n c l ud i n g China, Pakistan, Greece and Italy.

The under-twos at Yu luw i r r i have been painting with various art materials and objects.

Using small round pieces of wood and string the ch i ld ren ex plored i n

different ways.

T he older ch i ld ren pr a c t i c e d t hei r f i ne motor skills and hand-eye coordination by holding the wood and lining the string up with the paint in the tray.

The younger children dipped the wood pieces in the paint and used them as stamps, while the youngest babies were happy using their fingers

to explore the texture of the paint.

Children’s Services were proud to once again win first place for their Novelty Scarecrow at the Coonabarabran Show.

T h i s ye a r ’s w i n n i ng entry was a hammerhead shark named Shark Boy, Shark Face and was a collaborative effort from the 3-5 years.

Saint Lawrence’s S t L aw r enc e ’s h a s had another busy week as we are very quickly headed towards the end of term one!

All week our teachers here at St Lawrence’s have been conducting ou r s t ude nt - c e nt r e d conferences.

This is a great way

Book review, with Carol Pickette T h is month, Wa r r u mbu ngle B o ok Club met on Tuesday, 19 March, to discuss their latest novel, Before the Coffee Gets Cold, by Toshikazu Kawaguchi.

The book was translated from Japanese and some members felt that maybe a little was lost in translation. It was a book of short stories, all with a common link, making each one easier to comprehend as you r e ad t h r ou g h t hem .

This did, unfortunately, make a lot of the content repetitious as rules and understanding of events was repeated in each

case.

It was set in a dimly lit little basement cafe down a side alley, cool, dark and secluded.

Must have served good coffee!

T here is a spe cia l chair in the cafe that can transport you back to the past. Upon sitting on this chair and thinking of a specific time and date and person you would like to connect with, and being served coffee, you can go back until your coffee gets cold, then you are returned to the present.

You cannot move from the chair during this time as the past will be gone!

Nothing can be changed in the past and nothing can change the present.

T her e a r e s ever a l scenarios here – lovers, husband and wife, sisters, and mother and child.

All those who removed themselves to the past wanted to say sor r y, understand or explain something.

Who doesn’t have just one little thing in their life they just don’t quite get? Or regret? Or wonder

about?

The past or the present cannot be altered, but en l i g ht en ment f r om these meet-ups can alter feelings that can make a difference to the future.

The author is also a playwright and it was quite obvious from the descriptions in this book that it could easily be adapted into a play.

The consensus was that this was a reasonably easy book to read and showed life’s complexities, slowing down of thoughts, as in the coffee cooling.

T he characters, with their Japanese names, were rather confusing at first, but became clearer as the stories progressed.

The cover of the book was pleasing to the eye a nd wou ld easi ly be plucked from the library shelf.

Book Club members rated the book an average 5.7 out of 10.

With the daily chores of the eggs collected from the school ch ickens, a nd our very own Milo, the school pony fed, and the NA PL A N testing out of the way, there was an excited atmosphere with a sport and cultural focus for the rest of the week as students at CPS c elebr at e d H a r mony Week and competed in the basketball and zone tryouts.

We spent time in our classes reading stories about cultural diversity and acceptance, created artworks that symbolise this and on Thursday we all wore orange to represent harmony and t o h ig h l ig ht t h at at our school “ Everyone belongs!”

Youth art: empowering expression Young artists were put on show through SPACE Gallery’s latest exhibition in Coonabarabran, highlighting local talent.

by GEORGIA SPENCE The Imrie brothers, Flin and Neo, submitted their work to the gallery and showcased their talents.

Flin, 12, and Neo, 18, have followed their family’s creative footsteps.

Both parents are artistic and explore areas such as life drawing and painting, as well as cartoon character drawing.

Their mother, Peta Imrie said the brothers had enjoyed art from a young age, with canvases dating back to when they were three.

Growing up, Flin was taught how to draw anime and various character from a nanny who was a graphic designer.

Mrs Imrie felt his passion for art was lit through this experience.

These days, Flin brings life to his characters to life through his own comic books and enjoys creating portraits in pencil and chalk pastel.

Neo also enjoyed life drawing and painting growing up.

Currently, he aims to create pieces that encompass fantasy and cartoon elements, through mixed media, drawing and painting.

After he finished Year 12, his body of work was showcased at the Coonabarabran Show and as part of a SPACE Gallery installation.

He completed his visual arts subject through distance education and spent two weeks at the National Art School of Sydney, where he had to

complete ar t works and showcase them in an exhibition at the Art School.

Mrs Imrie said she was proud of her boys and hoped for more local opportunities that inspire young people who are passionate about art.

“It is impor tant to embrace youth with their creative outlets – not all kids are academic, and some thrive in creativity,” Mrs Imrie said.

“It helps build confidence, personalit y and develop an outlet that reduces anxiety. It is a way of expressing themselves in a socially acceptable way.

“It would be great if artists (local or non local), could host afternoon sessions or holiday sessions for youth and adults – that would encourage more young people to learn.”

The future appears bright for both Flin and Neo, who both hope to transform their artistic talents into a career.

Mrs Imrie said Flin hopes to live in Japan to make anime movies, comics and artworks.

Neo is still trying to decide what direction he wants to take with his art, and is contemplating whether art school or TAFE would provide the best opportunity.

Also exhibited at SPACE Gallery for the first time was up and coming artist, four-year-old Theo Cormie.

Young Theo was so inspired by the art work from the Imrie brothers, that he decided to showcase his own skills.

Backing the art crafted by young individuals fosters encouragement and cultivates a fresh wave of new talent.

Guides connect with Indigenous artists on river project Taking the opportunity to connect with artists at work on the forming river project, Coonabarabran Junior Guides met at the new Neilson Park playground for a recent meeting and then visited two artists at work.

Warwick Keen explained how he designed and worked on the sculpting of two large ironbark logs, focusing on Dhinawan (Emu) and Burrabeedee (Flying Mice), and talked about the connection to land, culture, his art experience and the local Elders for helping him determine his designs.

The Junior Guides were then taken on a walking tour of Neilson Park and the new walkway project by Cr Kodi Brady. Imagining the various artworks soon to be put in place, they could hear and see the construction still occurring on the path as they made their way towards the bridge.

Under the Mary Jane Cain Bridge the girls got to meet mural artist, Daniel Evans, who had completed the painting on two bridge pylons and was partway through a wide mural spanning the base of the bridge.

Junior Guides were given the opportunity to ask questions about the design and process of his creation, including how Mr Evans learnt his skills to create imagery depicting the Warrumbungle mountains, the connection and meeting of people from different groups through the land and the water. Mr Evans worked on the mural while the Guides watched on.

The Junior Guides returned to the playground and celebrated the upcoming Harmony Day with

creative chalk drawings and having active fun on the equipment.

Guides expressed their appreciation to Kodi Brady, Warwick Ke e n, Da nie l E va ns and Krista Holmesby for their valuable time and sharing their knowledge behind this exciting project for our community to enjoy into the future.

“We can’t wait to see it finished and to be able to join in the opening celebrations on Sunday, 5th May,” said Vivian Evans, district manager of Coonabarabran Girl Guides.

Golden Par Championships WEEKEND GOLF The Coonabarabran Golf Club’s Men’s 4BBB Par Championships were held last Saturday, 23 March and, with actual gold up for prizes, a great field turned up to try

and win their own piece of gold!

It was no su r pr ise that the winners were S Jones and J Dawson.

They absolutely whipped the field, with plus 14.

In second place – and a way back – were D Moore and C Higgins

with plus 9.

Ditch the chocolate, head to the greens With a history spanning over four decades, the Easter Bowls weekend stands as one of Coonabarabran’s most enduring Easter traditions.

Bowls Coordinator, Norm Buchanan joined the C oonaba rabran Bowling Club in 1992.

He said he remembered a time where players wou ld travel f rom

Sydney, Newcastle and the Central Coast for the weekend.

When he first joined, the event used to run from the Friday through to the Monday.

These days, the event runs on the Saturday and Sunday of Easter, however, Mr Buchanan said it remains a big weekend of bowls and c a m a r ader ie for t he

club.

T h is yea r, punters can expect to compete in a fours’ tournament on the Saturday and a pairs’ tournament on the Sunday, with prize money of $8000 up for grabs across the various events.

“It is a great weekend of pa r t ic ipat ion a nd competition,” Mr Buchanan said.

“ You pl ay a g a i n s t different people from d i f ferent a reas w ith all skill levels, while enjoying the hospitality, food and good company.

“I do remember one o f A u s t r a l i a ’s b e s t bowlers, Aron Sherriff, wou ld c ome up e ach year and play with us. “ We wou ld h ave people coming for 20 years in a row.”

AROUND THE TRAPS WEDNESDAY GOLF There’s no doubt about the consistency of the boys who, once again, cleaned up the field.

Paddy Cain claimed victory, returning a score of 32 points in the Wednesday stableford played last week. A close second was John Dawson, 30 points, with third place going to Steve Jones, 29 points.

In all fairness, there were no ladies competing in this event – work commitments, injuries, holidays and an assortment of other reasons for the lack of female competitors.

The course fairways are good, providing a bit of run. The greens, unfortunately, are not happy with some bug or other problem causing havoc. The ground staff are doing their best to overcome the situation.

We are hoping for a good roll-up of competitors for Saturday’s event - the Harry and Jean Bayliss Medley Stableford.

Harry and Jean did so much to encourage young people to take up this sport. Several of those went on to make a name for themselves: Rebecca Flood, who has played the world circuit, Angela McArtney, who became a professional coach, Warren Sevil – the list goes on.

CHICKEN RUN The Coonabarabran Golf Club’s Sunday morning chicken run played on 24 March was an Ambrose event, with Kurt and Matt Pincham the winners, scoring 31 3/4 on a count back.

Vouchers were won by Aden Larance and Wally Tighe, 31 3/4 c/b, and Stass Agalidis and Neal Percival, 31 3/4.

There was a good roll up for the Ambrose and everyone enjoyed the barbecue following play.

Taking strides towards fitness and wellness A spark of fitness opportunities has lit a fire of health in the Coonabarabran community.

by GEORGIA SPENCE From bootcamps, to boxing and tennis, Coonaba rab ran’s newest social run meet offers encouragement and camaraderie.

Ever y Tuesday afternoon a group of l i ke - m i nded peop l e gather to pump each other up for an evening of exercise.

The Coona Run/ Walk Group has been active for close to two months and welcomes runners, walkers, dogs and children.

Two separate courses a r e m a p p e d o u t, to cater for all skills levels.

T h e s m a l l e r co u r se cove r s a d i s ta n ce of 4.9 kilometres and the ot h e r, l a r g e r c o u r s e covers 10 kilometres.

The inception of the Coona Run Group was spea r headed by A r thu r No r ton, who em pha s i sed that th e courses were crafted to provide both flexibility and independence Ru n n i n g a s a fo r m of exe rcise has been a par t of Mr Nor ton’s life for 25 years and he said the group was a wa y to b r i n g peo p l e togethe r and bui ld encouragement.

“It is a gathering where you come and pick your path, meet l i ke - m i nded peop l e a n d e n j oy t h e g re a t outdoors. You can come

and mix with others and there is no pressure,” Mr Norton said.

“You get a bit sore and tired, but when you persist and you keep at it, the mental and physical benefits are wonderful – not to menti on the camaraderie involved.

“Fo r those wanti ng t o p u s h t h e m s e l ve s , you can compete against your mates and encourage each other to go harder – just as a bit of light- hear ted banter and fun.”

Mr Nor ton also said t h e g ro u p h a d ro o m for expansion, with a s te a d y h a l f - a - d oz e n people turning up each week.

No money is required to join and the group meets at the front of Yaama Cafe at 6.30pm every Tuesday.

The Coonabarabran community may have more opportunities for f itnes s as commun it y members work behind the scenes to bring a ‘parkrun’ to town.

Serving up support for local organisations MOREE Not only a much-loved opportunity to showcase the vibrant Moree Plains community, in the past 20 years the Moree on a Plate Food and Wine Festival has donated more than $67,000 to local groups.

Proceeds from the annual Moree on a Plate raffle are distributed each year to local community groups of choice, with recipients of the 2023 festival donation the Moree Cancer Support Group and Country Education Foundation of Moree.

Moree on a Plate raffle coordinator, Trish Siddins, said she was continually heartened by the generosity of the local business houses who never baulk at donating a range of quality goods and services to the raffle, and the local community members, always quick to purchase a ticket.

“Last year we were thrilled to raise $8000, which we split between the two community groups, and it’s always a proud day handing over a donation that will help strengthen and support our local charitable organisations,” she said.

The Moree Cancer Support Group, which has been running for thirty years, purchases equipment for use in the homes of local cancer and palliative care patients.
