A local good news story went viral on social media last week, after some heart-warming action by volunteer fire fighters.

by LIZ CUTTS It was a lucky escape for two newborn lambs on Saturday, 16 November, when a fast-moving grass fire swept through their paddock at Teridgerie, near Baradine.

NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) firefighters quickly arrived on scene and used their trucks to muster the majority of the sheep to safety.

Checking the burning paddock, Baradine RFS brigade captain, Phil Hensby found two lambs left behind and scooped them up to safety.

According to the RFS, 170 hectares were burnt, with many units attending including one aircraft and a private plough and grader.

The RFS said the fire was contained without the loss of a single sheep, adding that this fire was a reminder to everyone to be prepared for bushfires now that the storm season has started.

“Lightning strikes are always likely; if you see a fire starting you should call triple zero immediately,” a RFS spokesperson said.

“If you are unsure of the exact position, download the Emergency Plus app which gives the exact GPS location.

“Make sure you have prepared a fire plan for your home and property so that you are ready; being ready is the key.”

It was a case of ‘Ewe beauty, Phil’ when Baradine brigade captain Phil Hensby saved two lambs from the paddock fire.

The year of “enshittification” Each year, the Macquarie Dictionary selects a Word of the Year that captures the zeitgeist of the nation. This year’s choice, “enshittification”, may be one of the most jarring yet.

A new term has emerged to descr ibe t h e s l o w e r o s i o n o f o n l i n e p l a t fo r m s : enshittification.

It’s a blunt, but fitting word for how big tech companies, in their pursuit of profit, dismantle the ver y ser vices that once made them indispensable.

While this trend may seem like a distant issue for Silicon Valley, its ripples are felt far and wide – even here in the bush.

For rural Australia, the internet has been n ot h i n g s h o r t o f t ra n s fo r m a t i ve. F r o m connecting families across the country to promoting small businesses, farming initiatives and community events, digital platforms have empowered towns like Coonabarabran. But now, cracks are appearing in this digital lifeline.

Take online marketplaces. Once a boon for regional communities, they allowed farmers to sell livestock, tradies to find jobs and locals to source hard-to-find items.

Today, those same platforms are bogged down with excessive fees, opaque algorithms that bu r y local l istings, and imper sonal systems prioritising scale over substance.

Social media, too, has shifted from fostering genuine connections to chasing advertising dollars.

Posts from local businesses, sports clubs, and community groups – the daily updates that bind small towns – are now buried beneath a flood of irrelevant ads and distant content (chances are you’ve already watched a funny cat and/or dog video/s today).

If you do happen to see a post from a local business (because you liked the page), it’s often days or weeks later than it was intended to be viewed - like your local cafe’s “Friday special”...on a Sunday.

For communities like ours, where word-ofmouth and trust are cornerstones, this erosion

is more than frustrating; it’s a direct hit to our way of life.

The disconnection is all the more stark in the bush, where access to digital services is already limited by poor infrastructure and high costs.

For Coonabarabran and the Warrumbungle region, it often feels like the digital divide is growing wider. Yet, as always, the bush finds ways to adapt. Local businesses innovate, leaning on personal connections and trusted outlets.

New $2 pool entry fee At the November ordinary Council meeting held on Thursday, 21 November, Warrumbungle Shire Council resolved to reduce the entry fees for the 2024/25 swimming season, with a new casual admission cost of $2. “ T his change aims to improve accessibility t o t he p o ol s for t he c o m mu n i t y, w h i l e maintaining high s t a nd a r d s o f s a fe t y and ser v ice,” said Wa r r umbungle Shire Council mayor, cou nci l lor K ath r y n Rindfleish.

“The $2 entry fee is effective immediately, st a r t i n g F r id ay 2 2 November 2024.

However, the fee

applies only when a pool attendant is on duty.”

Subject to staffing availability, the pools will operate during the following hours: • Monday to Friday: 3pm to 6pm • Satu rday a nd Su nd ay : 10 a m t o 1 2 noon, and/or 3pm to 6pm During the December – Janua r y school holidays, pool hours may be extended to 7pm.

“Visitors paying the

admission fee must sign in at the front gate or counter in the patrons b o ok for s a fet y a nd security reasons,” Cr Rindfleish said.

Season-ticket holders are not allowed to share their passes. Council said if it is found that a season ticket is used by someone other than the ticket holder, both the pass holder and the person entering the pool may have their entry

privileges revoked. “ We enc ou rage a l l pool users to respect t he r u le s t o en s u r e a fai r exper ience for everyone,” Cr Rindfleish said. “ Season ticket holders will not receive a discount due to the introduction of the $2 entry fee. RSL Spur Ranch program: a “magical experience” The RSL SPUR program recently completed a week-long muster in Coonabarabran, where 10 veterans participated in activities that took them to various properties in the area and along the main street of Coonabarabran during Remembrance Day.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY The RSL SPUR program was established by Max Streeter, who, after ser ving overseas, was significantly impacted.

He described his first experience with horses as “transformative” and wanted other veterans to experience the heal ing power of horses and horsemanship.

In 2018 the program was established w i t h s u p p o r t f ro m R S L L i fe Ca re, working out of a refurbished property in Picton, outside of Sydney.

T h e m u s te r co m es a s th e f i n a l phase of various courses: handling, a weste r n - r id i ng i ntensive and a cattle clinic.

T h e i r we e k i n Co o n a b a ra b ra n started with the Remembrance Day march, that proved to be a highlight for locals and the riders.

A cattle clinic was hosted by David Grant, before they continued through the rest of the week.

For Max, it was also important to be able to show the various support services on offer to veterans out in the west, where such services may be limited.

“Ten veterans, seven days, hot, dusty and full of flies, but you couldn’t f i n d 10 h a p p i e r p e o p l e fo r t h e experience,” Max reported. “ We r o d e h a r d , a t e w e l l a n d learned some valuable life skills – and it gave us a real appreciation for the man on the land.”

Bet ween m us te r i ng, th e g rou p helped mark cattle and witnessed the birth of a calf.

“It was a magical experience and if the people of Coona will have us, we’d be happy to come back.”

Participants in the RSL Spur program enjoyed hands-on activities at the recent week-long muster in Coonabarabran, including a cattle clinic by local livestock agent, David Grant.

Community celebrates culture On Saturday, 23 November the Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) hosted the much-anticipated Night Under the Stars, an event brimming with culture, connection and celebration.

Held at the Coonabarabran Racecourse, the event was originally planned to be held earlier this year during NA IDOC Week, but the evening was postponed due to inclement weather.

Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Land Council CEO, Brandon Nixon said the wait was worth it. “ The event brought together approximately 100 people, creating an intimate and relaxed atmosphere,” Brandon said.

c o u r t e s y o f J a c i nt a L owr ie and the crew from Cardians Coffee L ounge, while Jenna Flood and the dedicated team from St Lawrence’s P&C committee ensured the drinks kept flowing.

Westpac Rescue Support Group smashes fund-raising target The Coonabarabran Support Group for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter will hand over a sizable donation next Thursday evening, as they celebrate their achievements of raising over $30,000 this year towards keeping the helicopters flying.

The group’s largest f u nd-r a i s er wa s t he annual Yabbie Races, which was held at the Coonabarabran Bowling Club over the C oona Cup Weekend, where it has been held since 2019 when the Support Group took over the event The Westpac Rescue Service flies four AW139 helicopters from three bases at B elmont, Tamworth and Lismore, prov id i ng emergency aeromedical services to 1.5 million people across northern NSW. With an experienced operational team ready t o respond 2 4 -7, the service is an integral link in the NSW emergency care chain.

Tasked by NSW Ambulance from Triple Z ero (0 0 0) ca l ls, the crews d raw upon extensive exper ience and training to respond to missions for those who are injured or requiring urgent specialist care.

Over a fourhou r per iod at the Coonabaraban Yabbie R a c e s , $1 2 ,7 0 0 w a s raised, and the Support Group already has its sights set on more next year.

The mega toy raffle, drawn just last weekend,

proved to be the group’s second biggest f undraiser, with over $3500 worth of prizes.

The valued volunteers had been selling tickets down the street since m id- S ept emb er, a nd raised almost $5k from ticket sales.

Throughout the year, a trivia night, an everpopular golf day and c o c k t a i l bl i n g o a l s o added to the momentous amount raised.

“About $30,000 will go to the helicopter,” explained Suppor t Group cha i r person , Amanda Sutherland.

“We always do what we can; we don’t always set a goal for how much we would like to raise, but I did have a goal of $10k for Yabbie Races and we smashed that!

“In 21 years, this is the most we’ve raised.

We used to be excited when we raised $5k, but in the last few years we’ve managed $20-25k on average.”

“At the end of the day, a ny money ra ised is local money.”

However, Mrs Sutherland said none of t h i s wa s p o s sible without the support of the community – “people who attend their events,

buy raff le tickets and even chuck their loose coin in our donation, and none of these events a re possible w ithout the amazing team of 22 volunteers that run these events.”

In the past, the Suppor t Group has suc cessf u l ly r u n the mock ‘ M iss Universe Contest’ that saw local

men jump on stage, and a r ever s e debut a nt e ball, that many in the c om mu n it y pr a i s e d as fun and engag ing experiences.

But Mrs Sutherland and the team are always looking for more volunteers. “ We ’d l o v e t o s e e younger people come on and give insights as

to what they want to see in the community,” she said.

“Most of our current members are elderly, and can’t do what they used to do, so having few you nger ones on board would make work much easier.”

Mrs Sutherland encourage anyone over the age of 18 to reach

out if they would like to lend a helping hand and support an amazing essential service in our area.

When the group kicks back in February 2025, they will be planning for a major event to be held to celebrate 50 years of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Ser v ice a nd 2 5 yea rs si nce

establ ishment of the Northern New England region – so something big will be coming!

Coonabarabran Support Group volunteers for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service are thrilled to have exceeded their 2024 fund-raising target.

Gwabegar School marks 100 years with heart-warming reunion The small school in Gwabegar, with its long and rich history, celebrated its 100th anniversary two weekends ago, drawing a large crowd of former students, teachers and residents for the festivities.

Gwabegar lies deep within the Pilliga Forest, often called the ‘Heart of the Pilliga’. This forest is the largest naturallyoccurring Cypress Pine forest in the Southern Hemisphere and was once central to the town’s timber industry, which supported 12 sawmills at its peak. With the closure of these sawmills, farming has become the town’s primary source of income.

Established in 1924, Gwabegar School was built during a period when numerous sawmills in the area drew families to Gwabegar from across the state i n sea rch of work.

However, settlement in the region dates back much ea rl ier. I n the early 1900s, Gwabegar played a key role in the sleeper-cutting industry,

The Goonanyah Post O f f ic e opened on 15 August 1912 and was renamed Gwabegar in 1924 . Gwabega r was the historical terminus of the Gwabegar railway l i ne, wh ich is now truncated to Binnaway.

T he now-closed railway station opened on 10 September 1923, and many travelled from Sydney to the town to find work. The railway l i ne pa ssed th r ough the towns of Mudgee, Gulgong, Dunedoo, C o o n a b a r a br a n a nd terminated at Gwabegar.

Gwabegar has a rich

milita r y histor y and many of the young men from the township served in WWl and WWll and, sadly, a number of them didn’t return home.

The Baradine district’s most decorated man, James Henry Percival F razer came from Gwabegar. He received the Military Medal and Bar for bravery during W W l a nd s er ve d i n the 53rd Battalion/4th reinforcement.

William Dunn was also awarded the Military Medal. He served as a Lance Sergeant in 2/7th Australian Commando Company and his medal was awarded 1944 while he served in Papua New Guinea. He had worked a s a s l e e p e r c ut t e r and log carter in the Pilliga and a memorial stands in his memory in Gwabegar’s ANZAC

Park.

The centenary weekend commenced on Friday, 8 November with Narrabri Shire mayor, Darrell Tiemens as the g uest of honour. T he festivities opened with a Smoking Ceremony led by M ichael R oss f rom the Ba rad i ne Local Aboriginal L a nd C ou nci l , wh i le studens performed for the crowd. Among the invited guests was Chris Jackson, Department of Education director of Educational Leadership Western Plains, who was given the honour of cutting the celebration cake.

F riday evening featured a dinner and a trivia night, focused on Gwabegar’s history, with the schoolteachers taking the win. Over the weekend, attendees had

the chance to reconnect, with some seeing each other for the first time in over 50 years.

School principal T racey McGlashan, teacher Samantha Alderton and a ded icat ed comm itt ee had organised the event, showcasing a large photo

display and a studentcreated tableau of the township as it appeared in the 1930s. A display of memorabilia provided a glimpse into life in the past, honoring teachers like Richard Chilston and remembering former residents who have passed but remain

cherished.

Business expands next door It’s been an exciting two months for Tony and Jo Cole, owners of Surf Work and Street, as they expanded their operations with a second building, conveniently located right next door.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY This expansion comes at a crucial time for Coonabarabran, which recently lost both its uniform and shoe shops, leaving a significant gap in local services.

A s long -time residents, the Coles felt a strong responsibility to step in and prevent another vacant shopfront in town, even while hesitating over the additional costs of rates, power, and other overheads.

“It all happened so fast – we didn’t really plan it,” Mr Cole admitted.

“We just thought we should help keep these businesses and services in Coona.”

In just two months the Coles, along with friends and family, transformed the new space. They renovated,

repainted, built walls and replaced flooring to give the shop a fresh, modern look, with an overarching industrial vibe.

“I took a month off work and we worked every day from 7am to 7pm to get it ready before the Christmas trade period,” Mr Cole said.

The hard work paid off. The new building not only enhances their embroidery and vinyl business, but also provides much-needed uniform solutions for other local businesses.

“We’ve had really good feedback – everyone who walks in comments on how good it looks,” Mr Cole said.

For now, the Coles are focusing on settling into thei r expanded ope ration, but they’re a l ready considering how they can further support the community’s needs in the future.

Combined Network Conference Last Thursday and Friday, Mrs Smith attended the Combined

Network Principal’s Conference, which involved the Western Plains network alongside four other networks – Peel, Mooki, Barwon and Namoi.

The two days saw training delivered

in explicit teaching, principal wellbeing, school promotion, and work, health and safety. There were also workshops based on antiracism, writing guides and invaluable hands-on learning.

Recently, Yuluwirri Kids have been participating in regular “bush” excursions to the areas that surround the centre including the track to the high school and the fenced block next door to the centre.

Last Thursday, as part of National Outdoor Classroom, children aged 2-5 explored the natural environment just beyond their playground, enjoying a mix of discovery, creativity, and teamwork.

The day’s adventures were split into three groups to ensure everyone had ample time to explore.

The youngest group,

the two-year-olds, kicked off the journey. They delighted in finding interesting sticks, observing trucks and cars through the fence, and searching for a “bear” near a secret cave under the trees.

Next, the three-yearold group ventured out, where they spotted a white dog sneaking under the fence and made their own binoculars from rolledup paper to enhance their explorations. Like their younger peers, they enjoyed watching the vehicles on the highway and imagining their destinations.

Finally, the senior preschoolers took their

turn. Equipped with sunscreen and full water bottles, they explored the entire bush block with enthusiasm. The group inspected potential tree-climbing spots and played games, guessing where the passing trucks might be headed.

The day concluded with cool-downs, snacks and reflections on their fun-filled bush block escapades.

These outside-the-gate adventures highlight the value of naturebased learning and the joy of unstructured exploration, letting the children lead the pace and direction of their activities.

THE MCWHIRTERS OF BINNAWAY: PART 2 The Empires Picture building at Binnaway was constructed in the early 1920s by Gilbert McWhirter.

In 1925, Metro G oldw y n M ayer sent the ‘ T rackless T rain’ a l l over the stat e, promoting their newlyreleased movies. Mr Bill Fost er, the ma n ager of MGM, wrote to the theatre owners along the route inv iting them to meet the train outside their town and ride to their theatre, wher e t he r e s ident s c ou ld lo ok t he t r a i n over.

It obviously caused a

great deal of excitement when it came to Binnaway.

In 1929, Gilbert (Bert) Victor McWhirter, son of Gilbert and Matilda, became the new owner of the Binnaway Motor Garage. ln 1928, Bert married Roma Greenhalgh, and in the years to come they raised a family of five: Barry, Gail, John, Stewart and Margaret.

Bert had first started to learn a trade with his uncle, who was a bu i lder, but rea l ised that wasn’t for h i m , whereas he had always been interested in

WEATHER WATCH During the past week, much needed rain was received in the Warrego and Maranoa region in Queensland.

Charleville recorded 170mms in six days, of which 92.8mms fell to 9am on Thursday, 21 November, the second-wettest November day in 150 years of records – just behind the wettest November day of 97.4mms on 19 November 2000.

The summer of 2000-01 was certainly notably hotter than usual in Victoria, NSW and partly in outback Qld. The small town of Injune recorded 133mms in six days, of which 74.8mms fell on 19 November, the wettest November day since 78mms fell on 11 November 1972 – and that too also set up a notably hot summer in 1972-73 from Victoria to well into Qld. A very hot period occurred from about 20 December 1972 to 8 January 1973. Birdsville recorded 49.5 degrees just before Christmas in 1972 ad much-needed rainfall occurred from the second week of January right up to the third week of February 1973.

Heavy thunderstorm rains have swamped the Gold Coast region. Coolangatta recorded 154.8mms to Friday morning, 22 November. This was the wettest November day since 207.4mms on 7 November 2004.

This month’s rainfall total at Coolangatta has reached 357mms and is the third wettest behind 379mms in 1937 and 375mms in 1961. Both 1937 and 1961, incidently, led to a hotter-than-normal summer in our region.

Currently, a low pressure is slowly crossing our region and, to date, Victoria and the Riverina have had light to moderate rainfalls by Sunday evening, 24 November.

Another low-pressure trough is crossing the Bight and this will interact with a low pressure over inland Qld, producing a few days of unsettled conditions with thunderstorms, which may continue to the end of November. This will also mean the absence of very hot days of over 35 degrees in our region until the second week of December.

The Five Ways Cafe, owned by Gilbert M cW h i r t er, wa s a popular meeting place in Binnaway. Besides the usua l ca fe l i nes, it was the newsagency and sold a variety of goods.

The café was demolished in 1984 and replaced by a house, then occupied by Mark and Jane McWhirter.

Ja ne McW h i r t er i s my d au g ht e r a nd her son, Ryan, is my grandson.

R y a n – t he g r e at , great, great grandson of the or ig i n a l Joh n McWhirter – now works in Dubbo as a solicitor.

Construction works kick off at No. 3 Oval

The construction of a new amenities building at Coonabarabran’s Number 3 Oval has officially commenced, marking a significant milestone in the development of the site.

Recent prelimina r y works at Number 3 Oval in Coonabarabran have included the relocation of overhead power lines, tree removal, the clearing of two shipping containers, and the demolition of the old kiosk.

All the preparation works have allowed for the construction of the new amenities building to start.

The new amenities building will feature

modern facilities, i n c l u d i n g t wo c h a n g e rooms equipped with toilets and showers, three storage rooms for eq u i p m ent, a u n i sex accessible toilet, a firstaid room, a referees room, and a food kiosk with an adjoining storage area.

The building will also be topped with a skillion roof, ex te n d i n g to c re ate a large, covered veranda for additional space.

Wa r r u m b u n g l e S h i r e Council mayor, Cr Kathryn Rindfleish expressed enthusiasm about the project’s progress.

“Council is excited to see this much-anticipated project moving forward,” Cr Rindfleish said.

“Once completed, the new amenities building, combined with the existing change room facilities, will enhance participation in sport for both males and

females, across all age groups.”

Construction work has sta r ted w ith the foundation stage, which is expected to continue for the next few weeks.

The superstructure p h a s e i s s c h e d u l e d to begin next month, with interior and finishing work expected to be completed

by February 2025, keeping the project on track for timely completion.

While the project has recei ved g ove r n m ent f u n d i n g , t h e Coonaba rab ran Rugby Cl u b h a s a l s o m a d e a significant contribution, both financially and inkind.

Additional funding from the Northern NSW Football Facilities Fund will support the installation of modern kitchen appliances and food preparation facilities in the food kiosk.

C r R i n d f l e i s h commended the role of local volunteer-run clubs in dr iving the project forward, “This development is a per fect example of the vision and determination of community groups.

“Thanks to the tireless work of volunteers, we’re creati ng a faci l it y that will serve the needs of the community for many years to come.”

Indigenous chef shares the healing power of native food

Award-winning Indigenous chef Sharon Winsor is on a mission to show the world that bush food is much more than just "witchetty grubs and goanna".

Growing up in Gunnedah and Coonabarabran, the Ngemba and Weilwan woman would often collect native ingredients in the bush.

"That was our favourite pastime," she told AAP. "It was always fun.

It was always something that was part of my life."

When Ms Winsor moved to Sydney she missed the bush, and the foods she had grown up with.

She realised many people did not know what bush foods were, and decided to start a business to showcase how native ingredients could be used.

"When I started catering it was quite a challenge initially because people's mentality around native foods was that I could possibly be only serving witchetty grubs and goanna," she said.

"It was very tough to start with."

Ms Winsor took a year off from her business for her mental health.

It was when she returned to the business, Indigiearth, she realised the power working with native ingredients had.

"That was the beginning of my healing process," she said.

"It continues to be my healing, forever will be my healing. I hit rock bottom in Sydney, mentally,

emotionally, physically, spiritually, from domestic violence and I had to get back to those childhood memories of being on Country and collecting bush foods and the

happiest times of my childhood."

So Ms Winsor moved back to regional NSW - this time to Mudgee - hoping to heal and create new opportunities for her business and

her family. In the years since she started Indigiearth, she's watched the interest in native ingredients grow.

But while interest increases,

National Farmers photo competition captures the spirit of Australian ag A grinning musterer taking a mob of cattle out at sunset has taken out the top prize in the 2024 National Agriculture Day photo and video competition.

National Farmers’ Federation president David Jochinke said Bronte Tremlett’s (Northern Territory) striking shot won the judges over in a record field of 500 entries.

“Undoubtedly agriculture provides some of the best backdrops and moments to capture on camera, but the sheer joy captured in Bronte’s image put it at the front of the pack,” Mr Jochinke said.

Coming in second place, Tamara Ward’s (Western Australia) heartwarming “Grow ewe beaut one!” features her daughter with Lilly, a hand-reared orphaned lamb, showcasing the close bond between them.

Well-known Moree photographer and videographer Sascha Estens was a runner-up with her image titled ‘Nothing Runs Like a Deere’.

“This is what National Ag Day is all about – showing Australians why farmers love what they do.

It’s the bonds with our animals, the stunning landscapes and

the feeling you get at the end of a hard day’s work,” Mr Jochinke said.

“Best of all, it’s about the pride and purpose knowing you are feeding and clothing people in Australia and across the globe.”

The NFF teamed up with Syngenta for the competition, with the agricultural company providing $5000 in cash to share between six winners.

Syngenta Australia & New Zealand managing director, David Van Ryswyk, congratulated the winners and thanked everyone who entered for sharing a little piece of their life on the land with the rest of Australia.

“These images give us a glimpse into the incredible people, landscapes and produce that define Australian agriculture,” Mr Van Ryswyk said.

“Australian farmers work hard to produce the food and fibre we consume every day. This is something we can all be proud of and National Agriculture Day – and this competition – is the perfect way to celebrate this.”

National Agriculture Day – or #AgDayAU – is held on the third Friday of November each year.

Man charged following Fast action needed on fire units alleged Moree incident

Police news

A man appeared in court on Wednesday, November 20, following an alleged incident involving a gun in Moree.

About 12.35pm on Tuesday, November 19, police were called to Drummond Street, Moree, following reports a person was seen with a weapon.

Officers attached to New England Police District arrived and were told a man had allegedly been seen in the area with a firearm.

Following inquiries, about 1:10pm, police attended a home on Kamilaroi Drive and arrested a 32-year-old man.

During a search of the property, police seized a number of items, however, no firearms were located.

He was taken to Moree Police Station and charged with two counts of stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm.

He was refused bail to appear before Inverell Local Court on Wednesday, November 20.

Teenager charged for alleged motel robbery New England police officers have charged a teenager following investigations into property-related offences in Moree under Operation Regional Mongoose.

Operation Regional Mongoose is a high-visibility police operation to tackle serious property-related crime, committed predominately by young offenders.

About 4am on Saturday, November 16, police were called to a motel on Warialda Street, Moree, following reports of a robbery.

Officers attached to New England Police District arrived and were told multiple unknown people had allegedly forced their way into several rooms, during which they threatened residents and stole personal items and car keys.

The group then allegedly fled in a stolen BMW SUV. Police established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the incident.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 17-year-old boy at a home on Jacaranda Drive, Moree, about 10am on Monday, November 18.

The teenager was taken to Moree Police Station where he was charged with taking a conveyance without consent of owner, aggravated break and enter in company steal less than $60,000 and be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner.

The 17-year-old refused bail and appeared before Children’s Court where he was further refused bail to reappear before the same court on Thursday, November 21.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.

A special registration solution for farm vehicles used to fight fires in NSW is long overdue, the state’s peak farm body has said.

Farm fire units are a common implement on many farms, usually consisting of a small truck, ute or trailer with permanently fixed water or fire management equipment that can be rapidly deployed when a fire broke out.

NSW Farmers Rural Affairs Committee chair Deb Charlton said a trial scheme to register these units had been held in early 2024, but farmers were still waiting on the state government to roll out a registration solution for good.

“There’s a reason why we call these vehicles the mosquito fleet – they’re incredibly good at swarming to the scene of a bushfire and getting it under control as quickly as possible,” Mrs Charlton said.

“However, with the benefits of these units comes the risk that many of these vehicles

are primarily used on farm and do not use public roads – so it’s not practical to register them.

“We’ve been calling for a logical, affordable and fit-for-purpose conditional registration for these vehicles for years now, but here we are, still waiting.”

With bushfire season now in full swing and high fuel loads present across many areas, Mrs Charlton said it was critical the state government took decisive action to ensure safety and peace of mind for first responders fighting fires this summer.

"All farmers need is a straightforward and reasonable way to get these units registered for this specific purpose, so they can use them legally and under the protection of third-party insurance,” Mrs Charlton said.

“Having the right tools to safely and quickly fight fires could mean the difference between a fire front that’s a few metres wide, or one that stretches for kilometres and puts rural communities at real risk.”



Newell Highway upgrade works completed ahead of schedule Work to upgrade a 5.8-kilometre section of the Newell Highway between Moree and Boggabilla has been completed several months ahead of schedule, delivering safer journeys for road users in the north of the state.

The state government’s Northern Tablelands spokesperson, Upper House member Peter Primrose said the $13.75 million project at North Croppa Creek, about 71 kilometres north of Moree had seen crews completely rehabilitate the road surface to improve pavement resilience and quality, as well as improve safety for all road users.

“The Newell Highway is a key regional route linking the north and south of NSW, carrying thousands of residents, tourists and freight operators every day, and the safety of the road is a priority for Transport for NSW,” Mr Primrose said.

“The work at North Croppa Creek features a rehabilitated road pavement, safety improvements including a one-metre wide centre line, along with drainage upgrades and culvert extensions to enable the pavement widening.

“Three key intersections at Limebon Road, Karuah Road and Oaklea Road have been upgraded to provide safer access on and off the highway for the many freight operators and road trains accessing agricultural land.”

Mr Primrose said the upgraded Newell Highway would boost productivity for freight operators and safety for all road users, provide a stronger and longer lasting pavement, and reduce ongoing maintenance costs in the area.

“Road users travel long distances in regional NSW and important upgrades such as this help to ensure they make it safely to their destination,” he said.

“Fatigue, in particular, can be a major hazard on long stretches of highway and the safety improvements at North Croppa Creek such as the one-metre wide centre line and widened shoulders help to separate oncoming lanes of traffic and help prevent head-on crashes, meaning less likelihood of casualties due to a simple mistake behind the wheel.”

Despite flooding and a significant number of wet weather events impacting the project, Transport for NSW says work has been completed several months ahead of schedule after the project team increased resources to boost productivity and take advantage of favorable weather conditions around the region.

The upgrade work at North Croppa Creek builds on further upgrade work on the Newell Highway between Narrabri and Moree, delivering improved journeys on the Newell Highway all the way from Narrabri to the Queensland border.

‘It’s been an honour’: Coulton says in speech to parliament Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton last week delivered his valedictory speech, just a few days short of 17 years since he was first elected as the 1029th Member of the Australian Parliament.

Mr Coulton took the opportunity to thank his family, friends, supporters, and current and former staff – many of whom travelled to be there in person – as well as his National Party and Coalition colleagues for their support over the past 17 years.

He paid special tribute to his wife Robyn who he said has been by his side every step of the way.

“We decided to do this as a team,” Mr Coulton said.

“So, for the last 18 years – we spent a year campaigning beforehand – we’ve travelled together, and in a big year we’ve probably spent the equivalent of 20 40-hour weeks a year in the front of a car – Robyn reading the emails and me dictating messages back to the office.”

Mr Coulton spoke of the great diversity and uniqueness of the Parkes electorate which he said is much more than just the agricultural and mining industries that underpin the economy.

He said there are so many projects and “shiny things” he could highlight as achievements over the years, such as the Western Cancer Centre in Dubbo, the Australian Opal Centre in Lightning Ridge, the Baaka Cultural Centre in Wilcannia, the library in Broken Hill, the small animal abattoir in Bourke, and of course, the Inland Rail – “just build it for God’s sake!”

But Mr Coulton said some of the achievements he’s most proud of are those that are more difficult to point to.

“Sometimes your successes with issues become invisible, because if you fix the problem people stop talking about it,” Mr Coulton said.

“A lot of the things that are achieved here are done without recognition. [When I was Regional Health Minister, I introduced] the generalist pathway, which is training doctors with more skills to work in rural areas.

“The medical school at Dubbo had over 520 applicants for the 30 places, so we’re training local doctors in the area.

“I graduated the rebate for Medicare. I don’t know that anybody here even knows that if you’re a doctor working in the more remote areas, you get a higher rebate for every patient you see than the ones in the cities. “[As Assistant Trade Minister], I represented the country a couple of times at APEC in tourism and trade. I was at the first ministerial meeting of the TPP-11, which was the biggest trade deal done in the history of the world. But what people wouldn’t realise now, when the farmers are going to the silo

and looking at the price of barley, that one of the buyers now is Mexico. They're buying barley to make beer in Mexico because of that agreement that we made.

“When [farmers] are having their big crop now and they’re filling up the grain storages that [were funded by a tax deduction] in one year, as a policy to prepare farmers for drought so that they can store their grain and manage it better, they're probably not thinking that that was a decision and a discussion that came out of our party room.

But those sorts of decisions are making big changes for people.”

In contrast, Mr Coulton said sometimes decisions made in Parliament are not always for the better.

“When the distribution priority area changed straight after the last election - and the doctors could now declare Wollongong, Geelong and Newcastle as regional - western New South Wales lost six doctors that week,” Mr Coulton said.

“Six that week from some of the most disadvantaged communities in the country. So, decisions here can make a difference.”

In his final message, Mr Coulton said regional Australia shouldn’t be taken for granted. He expressed his concerns that regional Australia is being compromised so that city-dwellers can feel good about doing something to lower emissions and “save the planet”.

“When you take your family to Disneyland and you tick the box that you want to offset your carbon emissions and pay a bit more money, and that money goes to plant trees on a productive farm, you are then sending a future generation to have to worry about food security,” Mr Coulton said.

“If we're going to treat regional Australia as a magic pudding, that every time we want to do something we just pinch a bit away, and every time you lock up a western New South Wales sheep farm and turn it into a national park or you buy productive water out of the Murray Darling Basin, then you are subjecting future generations to have to worry about food security.

“And it's not just us. We feed 50 million people outside of Australia, so we've just got to keep that in mind.

“I said in my first speech that I have a deep and unshakeable belief in inland Australia; and I still believe that today. It holds the keys to the future prosperity of our country. There would be no better place to live in the world than Australia, and no better place in Australia to live than in western New South Wales.

“It's been an honour and a privilege to serve as the 1029th member elected to the Australian Parliament. But it's time to move on, and I thank you very much.”

What is the ‘Rapture’ The ‘rapture’ is a revelation disclosing a previously hidden understanding. It is the threefold PROCESS of the “shout” or midnight cry “behold the Bridegroom has come, go out to meet Him”. Once Christ opened and revealed the Seven Seals through the prophetic ministry of the Seventh Angel, Christ’s mediation was fulfilled and He resumes His prophetic office “Son of Man and Judge”.

This unfolds the PROCESS to “the Voice of Christ the Archangel”.

Stained Glass Window cake

While it is costly to make, this cake goes a long way, as it is cut into thin slices which give the cake its name, for they have a stained-glass effect.

In the third and final PROCESS “the Trumpet of God will sound: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord”.

Christians must be able to identify the Seven Church Ages in their own Bible and the book of history to recognize the duration of each Church Age, name the messenger to each Age, and be acquainted with the revelation delivered to the saints of his Age. Without understanding one cannot recognize one’s position in the Body.

• 250g. Brazil nuts • 250g. macadamia nuts • 12 pitted dates •2 glacé pineapple circles, cut into chunks • 6 glacé apricots, sliced •1 cup glacé cherries, red and green mixed •1 /3 cup glacé ginger (optional) • 3/4 cup plain flour • ½ teaspoon baking powder • ½ teaspoon salt • 3 eggs • 3/4 cup castor sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Grease a 21 x 11cm. loaf tin and line the base and sides with greaseproof paper.

Alternatively grease two smaller loaf tins.

Put the whole nuts in a bowl with the whole dates, pineapple, apricots, cherries and ginger. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt over the fruit and nuts. Beat the eggs until frothy, add sugar and beat until thick. Add the vanilla and pour over the fruit and nut mixture. Mix well.

Spoon into prepared tin, try to arrange mixture to get good mix of ingredients. Bake at 150oC about 1 3/4 hours for the loaf tin, 1 1/4 hours for smaller tins. Remove from tin, peel away paper and allow to cool. When cold, wrap in foil and store in the refrigerator.

Serve in thin slices.
