by EMMA HARVEY Despite disappointment over the cancelled Coona Cup last weekend, another race drew record crowds - the Westpac R e s c u e H e l i c o p t e r Ya b b i e Races.

In lieu of race day antics, the Yabbie Races became the headline event, and hundreds gathered at the Coonabarabran Bowling Club on Saturday, 22 October for a beer and a punt.

“It was the biggest crowd we’ve ever had,” said Amanda Sut h e r l a n d, ch a i r p e r so n of Westpac Rescue Hel icopte r Service’s local support group.

Close to $14 0 0 was spent on yabbies alone, with one

syndicate even pool ing resources to smash the standing record for biggest bet on a single yabbie - $720.

The winning yabbie was ‘The Hooker,’ paying out $2700.

The event was a collaboration b et w e e n We s t p a c Re s c u e H e l icopte r Se r vice a nd the Coonabarabran Yabbie Racing Committee.

Over four hours that afternoon, $8400 was raised for Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to the community and our helpers.”

Health workers: we need you Warrumbungle Shire residents continue to endure closures of clinics while recruitment drives and incentives fail to lure health professionals to the area.

by CHRIS WARD Recently, a lack of qualified staff led to the temporary closure of the chemotherapy clinic at the Coonabarabran Health Service, which meant patients needing chemotherapy treatment were required to travel to Dubbo.

But now another health service in Coonabarabran is being impacted by staff shortages.

There has been no physiotherapy clinics available at the Health Service for a number of months and patients have had to access the service by virtual care.

A spokesperson from the Western NSW Local Health District said the current virtual-care system was not considered

a replacement for local clinicians and they were “intensively” attempting to recruit in order to fill the void left following a resignation earlier in the year.

“The District has actively advertised the position since that resignation, including multiple rounds of recruitment which have received zero applicants.

Despite every effort, the role remains vacant,” the spokesperson said.

“Attracting and retaining the required staff, including physiotherapists and allied health staff, to rural and remote areas is a long-standing challenge across Australia.

“That is why the NSW Government is investing $883 million over the next four years to attract and retain staff in rural

and regional NSW by transforming the way health clinicians are incentivised in the bush.

“The package is targeting critical and hard-to-fill roles including nurses and midwives, paramedics, pathologists and scientific staff, pharmacists and allied health professionals, as well as support and ancillary staff.”

But local GP, Doctor Aniello Iannuzzi said that the health sector was in such disarray that he would be surprised if the funding was enough to make its way to the Shire.

“The industry is in such a way that by the time any funding has filtered down to us, it would likely be minimal,” Dr Iannuzzi said.

Council agrees to toilet upgrades An idea proposed by the Country Women’s Association (CWA) earlier in the year has finally received the support of Warrumbungle Shire Council.

by CHRIS WARD Council has taken the lead in regards to men’s health, passing a motion to provide sanitary bins in male toilet facilities.

While the motion was passed at the most recent Council meeting on Thursday, 20 October, the issue will be put to vote at the next financial year’s budget.

If it passes, the Warrumbungle Shire will be one of the first in the state to introduce sanitary bins into men’s toilets, thanks largely to championing by CWA NSW and its president, Joy Beames.

D u r i n g t h e organisation’s state conference earlier in the year, Mrs Beames said there was overwhelming support from its members to advocate for the bins in men’s toilets around the state.

M r s B e a m e s first approached Warrumbungle Shire Council more than three months ago about the idea, but was initially met with resistance.

The Coonabarabran Times contacted Council’s general manager, Roger Bailey, back in August in regards to the proposal.

“This is a worthy idea by the CWA, however, at this point in time Council has no plans to implement such a proposal,” Mr Bailey said at the time.

But it took a hearty motion from councillor Denis Todd, from Baradine, to begin the process to enact change. His motion was passed unanimously by all councillors.

In the motion, Cr Todd explained that with a considerable ageing population and people living with disabilities, many men, women and children are now using a variety of continence aids, namely disposable incontinence pants, stoma equipment and catheter equipment.

“Anecdotal evidence has shown that the disposal of these products is very difficult, with few toilets providing a large bin for continence products - and many found they must carry these with them until a suitable bin can be found”, read the report which was tabled to Council.

“Travel is also considered limited for some due to

the lack of disposable facilities and as the Shire has a high travelling visitor population, the installation of these bins will make their trip much more comfortable”.

Part of Cr Todd’s motion was to also have grab rails installed in the public toilets.

Mrs Beames was excited at the news and said the fact the motion was passed unanimously spoke volumes.

“I think it’s an amazing result,” she said.

“And full marks to Cr Todd and all the councillors that passed the motion, that alone tells the story about how important it is to offer this service.”

Sanitary bins in men’s public restrooms is one step closer to a reality, with Warrumbungle Shire Council considering rolling out the project as part of next year’s budget.

Just add water The Warrumbungles is a waterpark thanks to recent heavy rain, but it’s a perfect opportunity to glimpse another side of our National Park’s treasures.

Recent ra i nfa l l h a s certainly caused chaos and dampened spirits ove r t h e s e p a s t fe w months.

But it isn’t all grey skies and potholes.

As multiple wet weather events made their way across t h e s ta te, t h ey h a ve transformed our National Parks into an oasis of flowing creeks, secret pools and cascading waterfalls.

In the Warrumbungles there are plent y of billabongs and streams to explore, most of which are dust and rocks in the drier months.

A s h a d y wa l k f ro m C a nyo n p i c n i c a r e a of fe r s a ra re s i g ht of Wambelong Creek in

flow – though you may need to pu l l of f you r shoes and socks for a creek crossing or two.

Hickeys Falls, tucked just off the Newell H i g h wa y, 4 0 k m f ro m Coonabarabran, also offers incredible views of cascading water not always seen.

Should the sun pop its head out, it i s the perfect spot to spread out a picnic or take a dip in the plunge pool.

I t s h o u l d b e n ote d that heavy rainfall and changing weather means roads in National Pa r k s a r e s u b j e c t to flash flooding and landslips, and closures are often enacted on short notice.

Visitors are reminded to check NPWS aler ts before visiting all National Parks and to stick to safety signage while visiting.

• Cattle, sheep and lamb slaughter returned to seasonal norms this week • Restocking demand remains strong in the cattle market • Buyers are chasing heavier lambs and are willing to pay a premium price for them

Yardings have increased this week for cattle, with predicted further wet conditions to come.

At some sheep sales, the ya rd i ng i mpr oved dramatically as producers look to move livestock off their properties before the wet potentially prevents any transport to saleyards.

The restocker yearling steer indicator has lifted in price and yardings this week, with Dalby taking out the most contribution at 36 per cent.

Forbes t ook out one o f t he h i g he s t pr i c e s i n t he i nd ic at or w it h q u a l it y i mpr o v i n g at the saleyard. Restocker demand in the market continues to grow with wet conditions.

Meanwhile, Dalby saw a near doubling in cattle yardings on Wednesday with cattle being drawn from a wider area.

Craig Ashby inspires CHS students to ‘dream big’ Coonabarabran High School has warmly welcomed the return of Gamilaroi teacher, Craig Ashby.

by JIMMY WHALAN After some time away teaching at St Gregory’s College in Sydney, Craig Ashby has returned to C oonaba rabra n H igh School (CHS), teaching G a m i l a ra ay l a ng u age classes.

D u r i n g h i s t i me at St Gregory’s, Mr Ashby taught Catholic Studies, History and Geography classes, while supporting 78 Indigenous students from K-12 and liaising with parents, teachers and scholarship providers.

M r A shby sa id that while he valued his time working at St Gregory’s, he had always felt that Coonabarabran was the place for him to live and teach.

“My grandfather Abby Ashby, who was a jockey and horse trainer, was born in Coonabarabran and lived at Burra Bee Dee and is a descendant of Ellen Ashby (Nee Cain) – so I see my connection with Coonabarabran and CHS as one that is of kinship,” Mr Ashby said. “ Teach i ng at CH S allows me to reconnect with family and learn more about my connection

to this place.”

W hen it comes to teaching language, Mr Ashby said his approach is somewhat different to other school la ng uage prog rams and that linguistics is his main focus. “ I teach students to deconstruct and r e c on s t r uc t l a n g u a g e conventions and functions, which I believe empowers students to know how the language works.”

The language program at Coonabarabran High is differentiated so all students can grow and achieve in the subject.

Students are encouraged to develop their own goals focused on relationships, ac adem ic suc cess a nd culture, giving everyone something to work towards collectively.

However, one of the cha l lenges that comes with teaching language is time.

Mr Ashby said there were a number of ideas that the school had to support Gamilaraay language in other local schools and the community, but these programs took time.

“Our students h ave ex pr e s s e d ide a s

of teach i ng /sha r i ng language with the primary/preschools,” Mr Ashby said.

“Eventually we would like to develop resources for the community, but again, this takes time.”

W hile there are cha l lenges , M r A shby said the school had been very blessed to have the support of local Elders and large companies that have helped to provide knowledge and resources to improve student learning outcomes.

He also found it rewarding to observe the growth. “ It’s amazing to see ever yone feel included a nd hav i ng a sense of accountability in reclaiming and ma i nta i n i ng the lo ca l Gamilaraay language. “ The growing prevalence of the language has nourished the culture of the whole school community. “ I feel that bei ng a Gamilaroi teacher comes with a responsibility to contribute and encourage the next generation to dream big and do well.”

Students and staff of Coonabarabran High School are thrilled with the return of popular teacher, Craig Ashby, who is teaching Indigenous language.

Floods impact businesses Road closures across the state and in the Warrumbungle region have given local business and Coonabarabran residents an insight into what life could be like post bypass.

by CHRIS WARD Earlier in the week, traffic through the town had come to a standstill, with residents and tourists trapped in the area the only ones navigating our roads.

There was also limited B-double and B-triple truck movement through

the main street, similar to what would be expected with a bypass in place.

Businesses in town have noticed the reduction in traffic and trade.

While Jacinta Lowrie, from Cardian’s Coffee Lounge said her business was traditionally coming into a quiet period, she

had noticed the decrease in travellers.

“November is usually a quite period for us because people are saving up for Christmas,” Mrs Lowrie said.

“There’s definitely less travellers coming in, but we’re still well supported by our locals.”

Emmanuel Dimitry, from Coona Chicks, said the situation was made evident to him at the beginning of the week. He too said the local support had kept him going.

“We had the slowest day in about eight months on Monday,” he said.

Carlo’s IGA store manager Naomi Milsom said they were also feeling the effects of the floods.

Not only has there been a drop off in customers, but Mrs Milsom said they

haven’t been able to get any stock in for three weeks.

“We’re running pretty low on stuff in store at the moment,” she said.

“We usually get two grocery loads a week and this is the third week we haven’t had any.

“Not only are the trucks

not able to get through the flood waters, but they are struggling with staff being cut off at the warehouses so they’re having trouble even loading the trucks.”

“We’re not even sure when the next delivery will be possible. It’s a dayby-day thing for us at the moment.”

With roads closed around the state, shops and supermarkets are struggling to stock their shelves. Carlo’s IGA store manager Naomi Milsom shows the impact the flooded roads are having on the store’s supplies.

- News from Council NATURAL DISASTER ROAD RESTORATION Council asks residents to be patient while natural disaster funding is secured and roadworks take place during ongoing wet conditions.

With the Warrumbungle Local Government Area (LGA) being the subject of several natural disaster declarations and the first funding being approved for the recovery, Council has identified its road restoration priorities.

“The Warrumbungle Shire has an extensive road network,” said Warrumbungle Shire Council mayor, Cr Ambrose Doolan.

“So as to achieve the most expedient and costeffective recovery the Council is going to be looking at a systematic way of managing the restoration works.

“To maximise the amount of funding assistance, Council’s entire regional and rural road network of 2370km had to be inspected, photographs taken of the damage, assessments made of the restoration work required and estimate of costs.

“This process took several months to complete following the November 2021 events.

“Over 1770 individual defects have been identified throughout the LGA. “The combined natural disaster events beginning in November 2021 have resulted in massive claims for assistance with road repairs of almost $14 million,” explained Cr Doolan.

“That amount includes emergency repairs stemming from the first declared natural disaster in November 2021, and we are yet to make claims for the most recent events!

“Unfortunately, more damage is expected with widespread rain this week.

“Council has been

working within the confines of the State and Federal Government rules for financial assistance in natural disasters, and is restricted in the kinds of works that can be done before funding is approved.

“Applications for funding are being made in works packages, with nine packages submitted.

“To date, only three packages have been approved by the NSW Government totalling $1.32 million.

“The recovery from this disaster is going to take some time.

“With the amount of damage to the road network I appreciate that everyone is finding it difficult at the moment but unfortunately it is going to take time to have the roads restored,” said Cr Doolan.

“The process to apply for funding is a long and complicated one that

requires a significant amount of effort and the Council staff have been working hard to put in a funding claim worthy of the extent of damage done to the road network.

“Added to that, the staff have been hindered by the ongoing wet weather and ongoing storm events not only causing further damage to the road network but also, and frustratingly so, repairs that have been carried out have been damaged.

“On top of this there are lengthy delays in receiving supplies and materials needed for works.

“It is expected to take up to two years to complete restoration works across the road network,” explained Cr Doolan.

“Council will be looking to carry out rehabilitation works in a systematic manner and priority will be given to problems with

major Category 1 roads first.

“These include Black Stump Way, Vinegaroy Road, Warrumbungles Way, Baradine Road, Forest Road, Purlewaugh Road and Timor Road.

“Whilst plant and equipment are in these areas, Council will work on the Category 2 and 3 roads,” said Cr Doolan.

“Council staff have been working additional hours and contractors, if we can find them, will also be used but this is going to be a long recovery.

“I ask for the patience and understanding of residents and road users while this recovery takes place,” said Cr Doolan.

“Finally, with the continued wet conditions, road users are urged to take caution not only in the Warrumbungle LGA but across the State,” concluded Cr Doolan.

THREE RIVERS RETIREMENT COMMUNITY Work on the Three Rivers Regional Retirement Community project remains on hold while legal processes continue.

Warrumbungle Shire Council continues to work through legal matters surrounding the Three Rivers Regional Retirement Community Project in Dunedoo following the termination of the contractor, Boulus Constructions, in August 2018.

In response to Council terminating the contract, the contractor instigated legal action that continues to progress through the Supreme Court.

The project site was initially secured by temporary fencing provided through a hire company when the project first commenced.

This hired fencing has now been removed, with Council purchasing and erecting its own temporary fencing around the perimeter of the site.

The fencing purchased will be suitable for use for other projects when matters with the building site are resolved.

The fencing was purchased locally and erected by Council staff.

With the continuing legal processes surrounding the project, Council has been unable to move forward with the site and acknowledges the visual impacts the project is creating for the community of Dunedoo.

It is most disappointing for Council and the local Dunedoo community that this matter has not yet been resolved.

KERBSIDE WASTE COLLECTION Residents across Warrumbungle Shire who are conducting a spring clean of their property can take advantage of the kerbside collection to have bulky items removed.

Warrumbungle Shire Council will commence a hard waste kerbside collection in November, giving residents the opportunity to clean out items that are too bulky for household bins.

“This service is a great opportunity for residents to get rid of bulky items like furniture, household appliances and whitegoods, electronic equipment, empty paint tins, timber and scrap metal”, said Warrumbungle Shire Council mayor, councillor Ambrose Doolan.

“All towns in the Shire area will receive a hard waste kerbside collection, and all villages will have access to a hard waste kerbside collection by appointment.

“With a maximum limit of two cubic metres – the equivalent of a standard

skip bin – residents will be able to clear out their unwanted items.”

All items for collection will need to be on the kerbside a week prior to collection.

For the town areas (less than 100km speed zone limits) covering Coonabarabran and Baradine, hard waste collection will commence from 21 November.

The collection will then move on to town areas (less than 100km speed zone limits) covering Coolah, Binnaway, Dunedoo and Mendooran from 5 December.

Bookings will need to be made for kerbside hard waste collection for residents living in villages or in 100km speed zone areas.

For the villages of Bugaldie, Kenebri, Ulamambri and Purlewaugh, bookings for waste collections will close on 10 November and waste collection will commence 21 November.

For the villages of Leadville, Cobbora, Merrygoen, Weetaliba, Neilrex, and Uarbry, bookings for pickups will close on 24 November and collection will commence 5 December.

“For the safety of our community members and motorists, please ensure items placed on the kerbside for hard waste collection are a safe distance from the road,” Cr Doolan said.

Coona Cup, to race or not?

The 2022 Coonabarabran Bowling Club Cup may still get a chance to run.

by CHRIS WARD It’s been a tumultuous year for horse racing, with unprecedented rainfall forcing many country race meets to be postponed or abandoned completely.

Coonabarabran’s biggest race day of the year - the Coona Cup - was washed out on Sunday, 23 October.

At the time the meet was moved to race at the nearby Coonamble Racetrack. But a downpour of rain the night prior to

the event prevented it from being run again.

The meet was again postponed, with Racing NSW representatives, as of Tuesday afternoon, still unsure if it would eventually go ahead.

“At the moment it’s postponed and Racing NSW is looking into running the Cup at a later point,” the representative said.

Adam Freeman, Coonabarabran Jockey Club president, is hoping

to secure another date to run the day.

“We’re really hoping Racing NSW come to the table and offer us another Sunday date to race,” Mr Freeman said.

“It would be exceptionally difficult to run a weekday meet, being that the club is made up entirely of volunteers.

“We’re looking like we need about 10 days of clear weather to be able to race on the track.”

Congratulations to our students who entered and displayed work. It is always very special to share our learning at school with the wider Tooraweenah community.

T he To oraweena h P&C canteen, in the new location of the new kiosk, was absolutely flat out all day and into the evening.

We are incredibly thankful t o ou r e x t r ao r d i n a r y parents, extended family, grandparents and staff who all put in multiple hours juggling their other commitments and helping in the canteen. It was a wonderful day in the canteen with a great bunch of people who went home exhausted and satisfied in the knowledge that their efforts will benefit the students at our school.

Transition to school We warmly welcomed our kindergarten 2023 parents to an information session at the school last Monday. It was wonderful to have eight parents and grandparents attend from seven different families.

Our transition students continue to be enjoying thei r ti me i n the K /1 classroom with a variety of activities. We love to read lots of stories, play games and sing songs during the day too.

Their content includes jokes, stories and coverage of their school and community activities.

I f you have an hour ava i lable on Satu rday nights at 6pm or Tuesday afternoons at 4pm they are well worth a listen.

This is an enriching and valuable technical and aural experience offered t o students a nd has provided a worth while entry into a variety of career interests for many younger Coonabarabran residents in past years.

There has been isolated phenomenal very heavy ra i n fa l ls w ith f lash flooding at some places.

During the afternoon a nd e a rly even i n g of last Sunday, 23 October, Renmark in South Australia was belted by 93mms ra i n fa l l. T h is was not only easily the wettest October day in 133 years of records, but also easily the wettestever day for any other month.

T here was no other day at Renmark which had more than 80mms rain fall, the prev ious wet t est d ays bei ng 79.8mms in Febr ua r y 2 014 and 76.5mms in November 19 61. T h is m o nt h’s r a i n f a l l h a s reached 140mms, easily surpassing the previous wettest October of 1 2 8m ms i n 18 9 2 a nd

also the wettest for any other month.

The previous highest monthly totals at Renmark were 137mms in February 1950 and 130.6mms in April 1974.

The first one did lead to major floods in various districts late March or early April of 1950 in NSW and Victoria. The second one did set up major floods in Victoria in May 1974.

L a s t F r i d ay, 2 1 October, Moree received 10 7. 8 m m s a nd t h i s was the town’s wettest O c t o b e r d a y i n 14 3 yea rs of records, just surpassing the previous wettest October day of 106.7mms on 16 October 1954. A large section of Moree was flooded.

Further rain the next two days at Moree lifted the October rainfall to 199mms, just enough to surpass the record wet October of 1954 when 195mms was recorded.

The heavy rain events of October 1954 i n Moree a nd a lso i n Coonabarabran, when 1 8 8 m m s f e l l i n t h at October, certainly set up very heavy rain in Victoria the last week of October 1954, again du r i n g t he f i r s t a nd third week of November and again du r ing the first and second week of December 1954.

Actually, the summer of 1954-55 was warmer tha n average, w ith top temperatures just reaching 40 degrees late in December 1954 and again in early January in Victoria, but cooler than normal over most of NSW. T h e o u t b a c k Q ueensla nd t ow n of Spr i ngsu re, lo cat ed near Emerald, was belt ed by 131. 5mms l a s t We d n e s d a y, 1 9 O c t ober, a nd then a nother 6 6 .4mms fel l in the next two days.

This made a three-day total of 198mm, which was easily a record for October in 157 years of records.

The month's total at Springsure has reached 217. 2 , su r passing the previous wettest October of 1949 when 197mms fell. Emerald recorded 135.6 on 19 October, also a record for October in 138 years of records.

Bourke recorded another 39.8mms on 20 O ct ober, ma k i ng th is the town’s wettest-ever October with 154mms in 152 years of records.

Other very wet Octobers in Bourke were in 1917, 1934 , 1950, 1955 and 2010.

This will impact upon our regions by providing mor e he av y r a i n a nd thu nderst orms i n the coming months.

Local farmers have met ongoing wet weather with a spirit of resilience and a willingness to alter plans and adapt to the conditions, which bodes well for the coming season.

Local farmers are still feeling optimistic about spring and summer despite impacts from the continued wet conditions to cropping programs and livestock around the region.

Central West Local Land Services mixed farming adviser, Matt Jones said around Coonabarabran growers were a month to six weeks behind where they’d usually like to be due to ongoing wet causing issues for plant growth and development “The feed quality is just not there – a number of producers have had to supplement livestock to meet the feed gap caused by the ongoing colder, wetter conditions,” Mr Jones said.

“Testing of feed to understand its nutritional

value was more important than ever.

“Central West Local Land Services can help with access and interpretation of feed testing results to help producers understand what feed they’ve got, what the quality is and how long it will last the particular livestock they want to feed.

“This is really important in the breeding cycles for sheep and cattle to know what they need at particular times, such as trying to get them in lamb or in calf and then when they are lactating.”

Bugaldie producer, Elliot Shannon said the wet weather had made it a tough season for cattle. “ W e ’ v e b e e n supplementary feeding our cows to help them pick

up condition,” he said.

“The younger cattle are just not performing as well as they usually would due to the ongoing cold, wet conditions.”

The Shannons’ cropping program was still going ahead, however, later than it normally would, he said.

“We’re having to prioritise jobs when it does dry out and it makes everything more condensed.”

Purlewaugh farmer, Sam Redden said the later 2021 harvest due to wet conditions had meant his 2022 cropping program had been impacted and the continuously changing weather this year made it harder to get machinery onto crops.

“With the weather changing every 10 days or so, things dry out enough

to get on but then we get wet again,” Mr Redden said.

The wet weather and access meant Mr Redden was looking at contracting aerial spraying as part of his cropping program, which he usually wouldn’t do.

“There’s a lot of people out west moving to aerial spraying this year, however, access to planes and helicopters can be a problem,” he said.

Mr Redden was still optimistic about the season, despite the challenges.

“They’re positive challenges,” he said.

“We’ve got a good spring and summer to come.

Things are going to grow now it’s warming up.”

by EMMA HARVEY There are many ways to spot a tourist in Coonabarabran. By how they pronounce Timor Road, for example (tee-maw, like a chump). By their bike rack/rooftop-tent combo. Their lengthy coffee orders and low-clearance cars.

According to my insider sources at the Coona Times, one can identify an out-of-towner simply by the way that they navigate the main street – peering into shop fronts with their hands clasped behind their backs, or standing on the median strip to take photos of the clock tower.

Fedoras! nominates our Editor, Kait. It is a truth universally acknowledged that only holidaymakers and Melbourne hipsters wear fedoras.

It’s soon agreed upon that the most foolproof way to detect a visitor to the bush, is by observing their flustered, even affronted, reaction when you offer a cheer ful, passing “G’day!” down the street.

It’s not hard to see who belongs around here, and who’s just passing through, campervan in tow.

I ar r ived in Coonabarabran on August 29, 2022, having ditched my life and job in Sydney, for a town of 2000 where I knew exactly no-one. I spent those first few days hanging pictures on the wall of my one-bedroom to make it ‘homey’ and going on long runs to get my bearings. I registered my new address with the NSW Government.

FaceTimed my friends back in Sydney a lot. I felt excited, lonely, a bit proud of myself, and also acutely, almost embarrassingly, ‘new’.

So I’m starting a ‘blog’, though the

word makes me wince with memories of early 2000s internet (what a world).

It’s as much for my own sake as for my employer’s (hi Kait!). The plan is to create a cool digital series that you, dear reader, will enjoy. And hopefully, along the way, I can get acquainted with my new home.

When I asked the Coona Times team about their favourite pastimes, our Indigenous Affairs Reporter, Jimmy, talked of dr iving up to Whitegum Lookout with school friends, mucking around, watching the sun go down.

And so, after work on Monday, I pulled out onto Timor Road in my trusty Toyota Camry, dodged the potholes and kangaroo carcasses en route, and took the 500 metre track out to the edge.

I forgot to take snacks. Thankfully an older couple who’d driven into the National Park via Mudgee wineries insisted I sample their Tupper ware container of charcuterie nibblies – blue cheese, prosciutto. They were probably nice folk by nature, but I also like to think that something in the country air makes people more forthcoming and neighbourly, enough to sacrifice even their most expensive truffle salami to a girl they just met.

I sat for an hour, watched the sky ripple gold then pink, the wind get stiff with cold. The contours of the mountain ranges receded and the impressive outcrops – the Breadknife, Split Rock – became stern outlines on the horizon. The last few moments, as the sun dipped out of sight, felt both brief and lingering. Suspension. A held breath. The start of something.

Baradine Aged Care committee has received funding to install 25 solar panels on the town’s medical centre.

by LIZ CUTTS The not-for-profit group, which run and operate the Baradine doctor’s surgery facilities, has been granted $4,000 as part of the ARTC Inland Rail sponsorships and donations program for the upgrade project.

Over the years the community has found it difficult to ensure access to a local doctor. The Baradine Aged Care Committee has been responsible for the fund-raising that provides the doctor with a fourbedroom brick home and

modern surgery. Ongoing fund-raising pays for the establishment, upgrade, and maintenance of these facilities.

“Baradine has an ageing population and health services are limited, with the nearest major hospital being more than a twohour drive away in Dubbo,” said a spokesperson for the ARTC. “These medical facilities are essential in securing and keeping a doctor in the town and upgrades are vital. The installation of solar panels on the

premises will help to reduce operational costs and play a role in keeping local medical services functioning.

“Inland Rail continues to offer funding of between $1,000 to $4,000 for individuals and organisations in regional areas along the Inland Rail route that contribute to local and regional prosperity, well-being and sustainability.”

Baradine Aged Care members were pleased with the success of the funding application.

“It is imperative that we do all we can to keep a doctor in our town, but to do this we have to continue to maintain and upgrade the health service infrastructure,” said Paul Wangmann, Baradine Aged Care committee chair.

“We are delighted to be able to reduce the medical centre operating costs with this sustainable solar solution and we thank ARTC Inland Rail for their much-appreciated assistance.”

Physie Club packs a punch at Zone The Coonabarabran Physical Culture Club travelled to Tamworth for the annual Zone Competition on Saturday and Sunday, 15-16 October, and came back as one of the most successful clubs in the region.

With only 34 members competing for Coonabarabran over the weekend, the results were outsta nd i ng, wh ich is not only a credit to them for their dedication and hard work, but to their amazing teachers and club. Everyone went home exhausted, but the high is still present on many faces a week later.

Coonabarabran Club entered four teams into the competition this year and came away with a prize in every event, with many successes in the individual events as well seven girls

and ladies making it to Nationals to be held at Sydney Olympic Park in the coming weeks.

The journey doesn’t stop for these girls and it will be practice, practice, practice for them. Making it to the finals at Zone is also very tough, so girls who have achieved this have worked very hard.

A s g i rl s mo ve i nt o the more senior years of Physie the numbers tend to drop and so age groups can be combined and the amount of finalists and place getters reduces. From ages 11 upwards girls need

to dedicate a lot of their spare time to practice, set themselves goals and work towards them if they want to get into a final or make it to Nationals. We are proud of all our competitors this year for the effort they have put into their Physie and having the courage to just step out on the floor. That in itself can be daunting for so many competitors, especially ladies, so well done team Coona!

I would personally like to thank Carlie Parnell and Maree Coyle for sharing the teaching responsibilities with me this year, they have done a fantastic job with all their girls and all the girls are winners in our eyes.

Our club enjoyed having a large roll up in the ladies’ class this year and we were excited to enter a team in one section. Unfortunately, we had to withdraw our team just before Zone, but we will try again next year.

Hoping to see all their beautiful faces back again next year with a few extras when they bring along a friend or two - it certainly is a lot of fun.

Barefoot and breaking records You might not see live coverage of sheaf tossing on TV, but it’s definitely a sports event worth watching - especially if you enjoy barracking for a local record-breaker.

by EMMA HARVEY Former Coonabarabran Show title-holder Gavin Richardson has broken the sheaf-tossing record at T he Good Old Days Fe s t iva l i n B a r el l a n , throwing 41 feet (12.4m) and smashing the previous record of 32 feet (9.7m).

When Jamberoo excavator operator Gavin R icha rd son att ended the The Good Old Days Festival with his family, he wasn’t planning on participating in the open men’s she a f t o ss . But at the last minute, and with nothing to lose, he decided to give it a crack.

“Something to do!” he said. “ No warm-up, no prepa rat ion , no sho es even.” (Gavin prefers to compete barefoot).

And he won.

“Fluked it! An old bloke came up to me afterwards and said, ‘I didn’t have my money on you!’”

Sheaf tossing is a trad itiona l S c ottish agricultural sport, originally contested at country fairs around 300 years ago. Competitors take it in turns to hurl a 16 pound (7kg) hessian sack stuffed with straw over a hor izonta l ba r, using a pitchfork.

In a format similar to high jump, the height of the bar systematically

increases, until eventually there is one man standing.

Though Gavin didn’t expect to be the last man standing at Barellan, he is certainly no stranger t o the spor t. At the ti me of competition , he was i n the midst of a hiatus from sheaf tossing, on the back of a strong career, including several successes at the Coonabarabran Show.

sheaf toss champion, Paul Nies, who first recruited Gavin to the sport.

“I’m 6 foot 4, so a bit of a natural.”

Su re enough, w ith no pr ior exper ience or training, Gavin came in second to Paul at his first Coona Show, surprising himself and igniting a healthy rivalry between the pair.

“I thought, I’ll beat this bugger!”

Push to ease port restrictions Free to operate Port of Newcastle would benefit North West: MP

Calls for restrictions to ease on the Port of Newcastle continue to gather momentum, with a bill officially introduced to the NSW Parliament to allow the facility to operate freely.

The port is strategically placed to cater for the needs of the many agriculture-related businesses and growers in the North West.

Due to restrictions placed on the Port of Newcastle, the local agriculture industry is currently using port facilities at Brisbane and Botany (Sydney) for exporting.

The extra distance adds significant costs, and economic analysis has shown that the cost saving for exports from Narrabri and Gunnedah would equate to $567 per container.

At a per tonne rate, the saving is estimated at $20.68, and in terms of distance, more than 30 per cent of the journey in kilometres is slashed.

The figures also paint a positive picture for neighbouring local government areas including Warrumbungle Shire ($499 per container), Tamworth Regional Council ($567 per container) and Moree Plains Shire ($297 per container).

Among the voices calling for the shackles on the Hunter-based facility to be broken is North West parliamentarian, the Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall.

Mr Marshall has pleaded with fellow members to support the move to ease the impediments on the port which is subjected to container limits due to commitment deeds in place with Port Kembla and Port Botany.

“These port commitments deeds created a monopoly for the movement of containers in NSW, for which our region’s farmers and businesses continue to pay the price,” Mr Marshall said.

“It is crucial that we move with the times and instead facilitate millions of dollars of private investment, which is ready to start constructing a new deep port container terminal, which would slash rail freight costs and grow profits for producers in northern NSW. “Our grain growers have a gateway to world markets on their doorstep, now redundant rules are keeping the door to Port of Newcastle locked and bolted.”

Mr Marshall said when the Port of Newcastle was privatised in 2014, another deed required that port’s operators to reimburse the NSW government for any compensation paid to the operators of Kembla and Botany.

Successful return of Country Press NSW conference Country Press NSW annual conference and awards dinner was successfully re-established in Sydney in October, marking the return of the major event for the first time since the COVID years.

More than 90 regional newspaper representatives, sponsors and guests of honour met at Rydges Sydney Central to celebrate the return of the annual event and to plan for the industry’s needs in 2023.

The event marked the 122nd anniversary of the association, which is the nation’s oldest continuously operating press body, established in 1900.

Major speakers at the conference included Telstra, providing an update of the status of the networks relied on by regional people, and taking questions from country editors over the state of network operations including black spot issues.

McGrath nurse to support breast cancer patients across North West

A McGrath Breast Care nurse in the region is ready to support breast cancer patients in North West communities after recently being appointed to the position.

Sally Laurie has spent most of her nursing career caring for patients in cancer-related settings and having grown up in the North West, she is familiar with the area.

“I know where Narrabri is, I know where Wee Waa is, I know where Pilliga is ... I know that tyranny of distance and how far people need to travel,” she said in a newspaper interview in Narrabri.

“There is no explanation needed about how far north or west of Moree or Narrabri they live – it’s not at all foreign to me.”

In her role, Mrs Laurie will work across the region, including Moree, Narrabri, Wee Waa, Warialda, Bingara, Boggabri and further north to the Queensland border including Mungindi.

Mrs Laurie is also no stranger to McGrath, having worked as a Breast Care nurse in the local area in an acting capacity in 2015.

“The best thing so far about being a McGrath Breast Care nurse is the look of relief on my patient’s faces when I meet them for the first time knowing there is someone locally to help navigate the system and support them every step of the way,” she said.

“It’s incredibly important to me that every person in my district has access to a local Breast Care nurse from diagnosis without the need to travel long distances to

see one.”

Mrs Laurie is particularly pleased to work as the Breast Care nurse at a time when awareness and funds are being raised locally to support the McGrath Foundation.

The inaugural Pink Up Namoi campaign held late last year across Narrabri Shire successfully raised $106,000 towards the Breast Care nurse program.

Organisers are again staging Pink Up in the shire this month, with a night under the stars held at The Exchange, Narrabri, last Saturday, followed by a pink breakfast on Sunday.

The role of a specialist McGrath Breast Care nurse is to support patients from diagnosis and throughout treatment, both early and metastatic breast cancers.

For Mrs Laurie, being a source of support and guidance is what drives her every day in the role, and she looks forward to supporting local families.

Mrs Laurie’s appointment has been welcomed by McGrath Foundation ambassador and director Tracy Bevan.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Sally to the McGrath Breast Care nurse role,” she said.

“The local communities in the area are incredible supporters of the McGrath Foundation, helping us work towards our goal of funding 250 nurses by 2025.

“With one in five people expected to miss out on the care of a Breast Care nurse this year, we have a big job to do in placing more nurses like Sally in communities around Australia, as

had reached 15,000 signatures after being circulated in communities throughout parts of the North West and Northern Tablelands.

Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall said the response to the petition had been overwhelming and demonstratedjust how important the issue of quality health services is for people of all ages across the region.

McGrath Breast Care nurses are available to help anyone experiencing breast cancer, free of charge and without a doctor’s referral.

The McGrath Foundation funds 185 nurses in communities all around Australia and their mission is to ensure that no one goes

through breast cancer without the care of a breast care nurse.

To work towards this, the McGrath Foundation is committed to funding 250 McGrath Breast Care nurses by 2025.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer for women in Australia; the risk of diagnosis in their lifetime is 1 in 7. More than 200 men are expected to be diagnosed this year.

Health services petition to be debated in November The potential break-up of the Hunter New England Local Health District is expected to be debated in NSW Parliament in November following the tabling of a rural health services petition.

Part of the petition calls for the re-establishment of the former New England local health area, with the primary centre of the area being Tamworth.

“I’m delighted the timing of the public debate on the floor of parliament has been confirmed and I cannot wait for our chance to bring the ‘people power’ from our region to Macquarie Street,” Mr Marshall said.

“Our collective voice will be heard and it will send the strongest possible message to the government; changes must be made and they must be made now.”

The petition also requests the Legislative Assembly to directly employ doctors in emergency departments in rural and regional district hospitals, with the capacity to provide in-hospital outpatient services.

Its third point requests a dramatic increase in the number of nurses employed in rural and regional hospitals with appropriate nurse to patient ratios.

“These provisions have made establishing a container terminal and increasing capacity at the Port of Newcastle financially unviable for the owners,” he said.

“The Productivity Commission recently released a report blaming the government’s embargo on container shipments through Newcastle for ‘raising import and export costs across the container logistics chain’.

“They have led to congestion at Port Botany and a lack of competition – in fact, no competition – as well as promoting uncontrolled cost increases to move containers in and out of Port Botany, which, by the way, has been named by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission as one of the least efficient ports in the world.

“The fact is these deeds are no longer relevant and the time has come to open up our State to investment and export opportunities backing in our hundreds of millions of dollars of investment into the regions.”

Mr Marshall’s comments follow a previous fact-finding mission when the Port of Newcastle visited the North West to meet with local producers and civic leaders.

The delegation of Port of Newcastle officials explained the capabilities of the Hunter-based facility. Port of Newcastle has also expressed a desire to become invested in the North West.

Port of Newcastle chief executive officer Craig Carmody, speaking in Narrabri, said their visit was also about getting a sense of what is happening here and the volume of what is produced locally.

“We explained to the farmers and growers what we can do for them at Newcastle,” he said.

While the port itself has two new mobile harbour cranes, the development of a container terminal is being blocked by the NSW government.

Mr Carmody said if the port is allowed to build the container terminal, which the state government still prevents them from doing so, the North West region stands to benefit from it.

The man smiled and said, “You won’t laugh at the same joke more than once. So what are you getting from continuing to complain about the same problem?”

You’re not going to get anywhere if you keep complaining about the same problem but do nothing to fix it.

Don’t waste your time complaining, expecting other people to continue to react to your complaints. Instead, take action to make a change.

Crunchy Vegetable and Chicken Laksa

Preparation 20 min | Cooking 15 min | Serves 4 For ease, use the flesh from half a barbecued chicken for this recipe.

INGREDIENTS 250g dried rice vermicelli noodles 1 tbs peanut oil 1⁄2 cup laksa paste 4 cups chicken stock 2 tsp brown sugar 2 cups light coconut milk 2 cups shredded cooked chicken 1⁄2 cup coriander leaves, chopped To serve: 1⁄2 cup bean sprouts, trimmed 1 Lebanese cucumber, peeled, halved and cut into matchsticks 12 cherry tomatoes, halved 1⁄2 cup fresh mint and coriander leaves 2 green onions, finely sliced diagonally 2 kaffir limes leaves, finely shredded (optional)

STEP 1 Place noodles in a heatproof bowl. Cover with boiling water. Set aside for 5 minutes or until tender. Drain and set aside.

STEP 2 Heat a wok over high heat until hot. Add oil and heat. Add laksa paste and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes or until fragrant. Add stock and sugar and bring to the boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Add coconut milk, stirring constantly until hot. Add chicken. Chop half the coriander and add to soup.

STEP 3 To serve, divide noodles between 4 deep serving bowls.

Ladle over remaining laksa soup. Top with bean sprouts, cucumber, tomatoes, mint and coriander leaves, green onions and kaffir lime leaves (if using) and serve.
