NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK: THE CHANGE MAKERS

Local firies awarded National Emergency Medals On Saturday, 20 May, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters from across the Region North 3 Zone attended an awards’ ceremony in Tamworth for the presentation of the National Emergency Medal, the National Medal and the FRNSW Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. Firefighters including deputy captain Zachary Estens and Stewart Row, from Coonabarabran Station 264, were among the awardees presented with the National Emergency Medal for their efforts during the 2019-20 bushfire season. In 2019-2020, NSW Fire and Rescue firefighters were deployed as part of s tate - w i d e “ s t r i ke teams” to battle bushfires from northern NSW and southern Queensland, to the Southern Highlands and the Victorian border, experiencing some of the most unprecedented f i r e c o n d i t i o n s eve r recorded. The catastrophic fi res burnt more than 46 million acres of land, d e s t r oy e d i n e x c e s s of 350 0 buildings and tragically claimed the lives of 34 people. Estens and Row were m e m b e r s o f “ s t r i ke” teams deployed to battle bushfires in the Southern Highlands. Former locals who also received the National
