Coona Times shines: recognition at Country Press Awards The Coonabarabran Times continues to punch above its weight in the newspaper industry, being recognised in two categories at the annual Country Press NSW Awards of Excellence on Friday, 18 October.

Held in Dubbo, with the theme “Dub Vegas”, the gala event attracted publishers from across NSW, along with invited guests: Tara Moriarty MLC, Minister for Agriculture, Regional NSW and Western NSW; Federal Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton; National M LC S a m F a r r a w a y ; L a b o r M LC Stephen Lawrence; National MLC Sarah Mitchell; and Jamie Chaffey (Country Mayors Association).

Representing the Coonabarabran Times was director, Lynne Estens, who was honoured to accept runner-up awards in two categories – Best New Coverage and Best News Photo.

Judges commended the Coona T i m e s’ c o v e r a g e o f ‘ T h e Vo i c e to Pa r l i a m ent’ w h en a wa rd i n g them second place for Best News Coverage, stating, “[they] engaged with a difficult issue in a unique and innovative way we thought was well worth a mention.”

Jimmy Whalan, former journalist a n d I n d i g e n o u s A f fa i r s re p o r te r w i t h t h e Co o n a b a r a b r a n T i m e s , delved into the Voice to Parliament, presenting several informative pieces on the contentious issue.

“A s a re g i o n a l n ew s pa p e r, it’s important for us to tackle significant n at i o n a l i s s u es l i ke t h e Vo i ce to Parliament in a way that resonates w i t h o u r l o c a l r e a d e r s ,” s a i d Coonabarabran Times editor, Kait Britton.

“Jimmy did an outstanding job in presenting the complex ities of the issue through a balanced and informative lens. His work not only informed, but encouraged thoughtful discussion w ithin ou r communit y, and we’re proud to have that effort

recognised by the judges.”

The Times was also named runnerup in the Best News Photo category for its front-page image of Bill Wilkin c e l e b r a t i n g h i s 10 0 t h b i r t h d a y alongside fellow veteran golfers at the Coonabarabran Golf Club.

“A full-width image celebrating Bill Wilkin, 100-year-old golfer. The photo shows the high esteem in which the local community holds Bill. A bit of humour, a bit of country spirit, makes one want to go on and read the story,” commented the judges.

Kait said she clearly remembers the day the photo was taken.

“I was lying down on the itchy grass in front of the first tee, trying the line up the shot, but Mr Wilkin was also trying to line up a shot – he was pretty eager to tee off!

“But it was a fun morning, and it was heartwarming to see the high regard in which Mr Wilkin is held by his fellow golfers.”

Wild storm causes carnage across the district Witnesses to a violent storm that swept through the northern end of Warrumbungle Shire last week said the intensity had to be seen to be believed.

by LIZ CUTTS The storm strip impacted the local road network including Kenebri Road, T imor Road, Bingie G r umble Road and Warrumbungles Way on Friday, 18 October.

The strong wind and heavy rainfall brought d ow n t re es, b l o cked roads and filled table drains with debris that took crews f rom Wa r r u m b u n g l e S h i r e Council more than six hours to clear away.

One resident said huge trees had been s na pped of f m i d way up the trunk and thrown across the road, with sizeable cypress pine trees ripped out by the roots, along with a lot of other debris.

Distr ict residents, Megan and Garry Worrell said there was a big mess to clean up at their Kenebri farms.

“The damage is not only to structures, but fences and paddocks are full of fallen trees,”

Megan said.

“It is thought this storm caused damage for 10 kilometres!

“Many of our neighbours also have damage; this will take a long time to clean up.”

A spokespe r son fo r Wa r r u m b u n g l e S h i r e Council said four sepa rate crew s we re called out last Fr iday eve n i n g to cl ea n u p following the storm.

The clean-up involved re m ov i n g fa l l e n t re e limbs from the roads, however, road closures were not necessary.

I n the l ead up to t h e s to r m eve nt, t h e Bureau of Meteorology had issued severe thunderstorm warnings, with damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and hail forecast.

Wind gusts exceeded 85 kilometres per hour in some areas of the state, leading to downed trees, power outages,.

The storm was part of a broader weather event that affected other parts of the state.

Trees along Kenebri Road were stripped, split and uprooted, as a large storm cell passed over the state last Friday evening.

There was substantial damage to infrastructure and trees following last Friday’s storm.

Bowman conquers Kosciuszko in fourth place It wasn’t quite the big payout everyone was waiting for, but Brett Bowman’s one–in-a-million ticket win still paid off at the Kosciuszko country horse race over the weekend, with ‘Boom Torque’ placing fourth.

Billed as the is the world’s richest race for countrytrained horses, the Kosciuszko is held on Everest Day at Royal Randwick and boasts a total prize pool of $2 million.

It was a long week for Brett leading up to the race, as rain predictions remained stubbornly unpredictable, leaving him nervously checking the radar by the hour.

“The horse doesn’t like the soft track, she doesn’t have a good record,” Bowman said.

“She tried, but the jockey got off and said ‘a good track would have seen a different horse’, although she still ran well to get fourth on a track that didn’t suit her.”

Bowman said she ran a cracking time, explaining that the Everest race (worth $20 million) ran right after the Kosciuszko.

Boom Torque ran just oneone-hundredth slower than the Everest horses, proving her ability as the country-trained horse.

A game of chance It was a game of numbers throughout the whole process for Bowman, after narrowly missing out on shares in the winning horse.

“We can’t get too much luck

I suppose,” he said.

Regardless of the outcome, it was an experience the Bowman family won’t forget anytime soon, walking down the tunnel and in the parade to a crowd of 50,000 people.

With his winnings, Bowman plans to put down a deposit on a unit for his two sons (18 and 21) who have just moved to Sydney...or maybe a holiday.

“I’d rather look after the kids first.

“We’ve made a lot of new friends and connections during this experience.

“I’ve got a horse ready to go to a trainer, and I’ll probably send it up to Boom Torque’s trainer on the North Coast.

“You’ve got to have the connections and insider insight, it takes a lot of money to get to this point, and lessons learnt, ‘cause no one wants to tell you their secrets. So you learn the hard way, through your pocket sometimes.”

One of 14 ticket winners statewide, this was a victory that will no doubt serve Brett Bowman and his family well in the long run.

“It really is unheard of, but sometimes you just never know.

“It could happen to you – I never thought it could happen to me!”

Coona Cup ready to dazzle With this Sunday’s Coona Cup coming in hot, the Coonabarabran Times sat down with Jockey Club president, Brad Edwards to get his thoughts on the upcoming race meet.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY “Our track curator Kerry Vallette has the track looking an absolute picture,” Mr Edwards said. “ W i t h s o m e r a i n p r e d i c te d through the week and then drying out towa rd s Cup day, we a re aiming for the track to be rated a good four to soft five.

“The grounds are also looking good and with all the marquees, should set the scene for a terrific race day.”

Publ ic enthusiasm has been strong in every aspect of the races, promising an impressive turnout on the day.

“There has been a lot of interest on social media and locally around this years Cup. “Our online ticket sales have been really good and our marquees for hire sold out within 30 minutes of them going online.

“The Fashions on the Field are shaping up to be the best ever, with six categories ranging from the future fashionistas right through to the silver section.”

M r Edwa rds sa id the re we re some great prizes for the winners, courtesy of very generous sponsors.

“I don’t envy the judges’ job one bit, as there are sure to be some wonderful and colourful outfits!

“We’re expecting a good crowd who w i l l enjoy a g reat day of racing, getting together and a wonderful atmosphere.”

Pre-race events In the lead up to the running of Sunday’s race meet, several prerace events have been planned.

“This year, the Jockey Club will be holding the welcome barbecue at the Imperial Hotel from 4pm on Saturday. Everyone is welcome to come along and $20 will get you drink tickets, barbecue meal and tickets in the Calcutta, which will follow on from the welcome barbie at 6pm.

“We have also added a free courtesy bus to the races.”

The courtesy bus will pick up race goers from the Imperial Hotel in Dalgarno Street from 11am to 2pm, returning to the Imperial Hotel from 4pm until after the last race.

Mr Edwards said he was excited to showcase the Coonabarabran racecourse and facilities to race goers this weekend.

“There is new signage on the front gate and winning post at the racecourse that look really good and complement the ground and facilities nicely.

WAACI wraps up a crafty showcase Warrumbungle Arts and Crafts Incorporated (WAACI) has just wound up a threeday exhibit at SPACE art gallery in Coonabarabran.

WAACI meet every Thursday at the Coonabarabran Anglican church hall and have done so for something close to 40 years, becoming a much loved and tightknit community organisation.

The highlight for this group is its annual exhibition this year taking centre stage this year at SPACE, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Tables were filled with diverse crafting projects, while the inviting aroma of coffee filled the air, adding to the cheerful ambiance.

“It’s been wonderful being in here,” said one WAACI member.

“Kodi’s been very accommodating, and it’s been great having the coffee shop up the back there because people might not have come in without it there.”

Maureen Davenport, WAACI president, Barbara Broeksema said the group had changed over the years “When we were younger and had more artists, we had a big annual show at the Coonabarabran Town

Hall, but as we’ve got older we’ve held the show at the church hall where we hold our meetings,” Mrs Davenport said.

“But no one could find us there, so this year we thought to have it here at the SPACE gallery where people are coming in and out.”

Currently, the group comprises 25 to 30 members, with people bringing in their products from home for a ‘show and tell table’, or leftover fresh produce.

“It’s a lovely sharing group,” Mrs Davenport said.

Come school holidays, grandchildren accompany the group, sitting on the floor and getting involved with their own art and crafts.

“It’s a great way for the ladies to come out of their home, get together and inspire each other.

“Most people have to go out and work these days, so our members are mostly older people who don’t work anymore – but anyone’s welcome, regardless of skill level,” Mrs Davenport said, jokingly adding, “However, you can’t work on something that you need to concentrate on, because with all our group fun and chat you can get very muddled!”

Fund-raising begins for second refuge for women and families Allawah Cottage is a crisis accommodation refuge for women, children and pets escaping domestic violence, based in Gunnedah, but supporting those from across the region, interstate, the Far North Coast, Sydney and Central Coast.

The estab l i shment of A l l a wah Cot tag e was dr iven by the board of Jobs Au s t ra l i a E nte r p r i ses, who recognised the di re need fo r cr isis accommodation in the region and resolved to take decisive action.

U n d e r s ta n d i n g t h e importance of providing a safe and supportive environment for those escaping violence, the b o a rd co m m i t te d to addressing this urgent community need.

Jobs Australia Enterpr ises initially pu rchased the land with an existing cottage, however, upon f u r th e r eva l uat i o n, it was dete r m i ned that a p u r p o s e - b u i l t n ew home would bet te r se r ve the needs of those seeking refuge.

C o n s e q u e n t l y, t h e original structure was demolished and a new, custom-designed home was built on the site.

T h e e nt i re p ro j e ct, including the land p u rc h a s e a n d construction of the new cot tage, was funded

by Jobs Australia Enterprises, combined with a $220,0 0 0 grant from the ‘Building Stronger Countr y Co m m u n it i es’ f u n d, which played a crucial role in partially funding this vital project.

The local community also demonstrated t re m e n d o u s s u p p o r t, ra i si ng ove r $10 0,0 0 0 to help complete the cottage including the addition of a children’s safe play area, and dog and cat enclosures.

T h i s co l l abo rative effort underscores the deep commitment o f G u n n e d a h and surrounding communities to providing refuge and suppor t for those affected by domestic violence.

Allawah Cottage is more than just a safe space – it is the first step towa rd recover y and rebuilding lives.

With the success of this initial cottage, ef fo r ts a re al ready u n d e r w a y to s e c u r e funding for a second cot tage, reflecti ng the growing need for such ser vices in the community.

T h e o n g o i n g ope rati ona l cos t s fo r Allawah Cottage, as well as any future expansions, improvements, or repairs, are fully funded

by Jobs Australia Enterprises, with continued assistance from generous community donations.

Tracey Reid, a rep resentative from Jobs Australia E nte r p r i s e s , s a i d t h e d e m a n d fo r A l l a wa h Cottage had been overwhelming.

“We are ver y for tunate to have support services that do an amazing job in our

region,” Ms Reid said.

“Our second cottage will assist more women, children, and pets escaping domestic violence, and we are c u r r e nt l y w o r k i n g to ra i s e t h e $210 , 0 0 0 needed for a second cottage.”

Back in April, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declared a national crisis of domestic violence, as the rate of genderedbased deaths rose from one woman a week to t wo eve r y n i n e d a y s

this year.

H oweve r, i t wa s criticised on social med ia fo r fa i l i ng to hold public attention, despite the recent State of Origin Games a n d O l y m p i cs g i v i n g rise to major national headlines and alarming statistics. A study reported a 40 per cent i ncrease i n domestic and family violence on State of Origin nights.

The choice of Gunnedah as a location was filling an u n fo r t u n a te g a p, a s

the town did not have a women’s refuge.

A repor t from the Community Legal Centres NSW declared t h at p e o p l e l i v i n g i n regional, r ural and re m ote co m m u n i t i e s are 24 times more likely to be hospital ised as a result of family and domestic violence, compa red to people living in major cities.

Ms Reid said Allawah Cottage had an Instagram account with over 1,100 followers who support the project with donations.

Old phones offer lifeline to domestic violence victims Repurposed mobile phones are being donated to help victims of domestic violence, providing them with a crucial means of communication in times of need.

Having a phone is something too many of us take for granted, and in a digitally-dependant society, technology may be used to control and manipulate domestic violence victims, revealing a gap in domestic violence support services for ‘safe phones’.

Almost every Australian relies on a smartphone – for phone calls, tracking their kids whereabouts, making payments and health tracking, which unfortunately has made it all the easier for abusers and perpetrators to control their victims.

With one in four Australian women and one in eight men experiencing domestic or family violence, 57 per cent report their phones and messages were checked by the perpetrator regularly without their consent.

In order to safely reconnect with family, friends and rebuild their lives, domestic violence victims need safe, private phones – which was what Ashton Wood sought to amend as the founder and CEO of not-for-profit ‘DV Safe Phones’.

With over 22.3 million redundant mobile phones gathering dust or going to landfill, DV Safe Phone is on a mission to give them, and DV victims, a new life.

“Since we began, we have repaired, repurposed and gifted over 10,000 mobile phones to domestic violence victims through our agency partners (DV agencies, police stations, hospitals and safe houses) across the country,” Ashton Wood said.

months as a donation and deposit point, filling a vital gap in the local region.

Vanessa Hodges-Schembri, from Gunnedah Family Support, explained that they were introduced to the program through the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Conference in Gunnedah last November, where several speakers made reference to the work they were doing.

“We were able to link in with them and they’ve been amazing, sending an information pack and a number of phones almost immediately – they have been so responsive and easy to deal with,” she said.

“This service is vitally important in regional areas – we’re all increasingly reliant on smartphones for storing an incredible amount of information.

“We’ve worked with people prior to their purchase a new phone, but that requires time and can raise alarm bells, whereas this is a ready to go, fully-wiped product that’s ready to give a person.”

Ms Hodges-Schembri also expressed concerns that people in regional communities may not be as mindful of how much information and data can be stored and managed on their phone.

Gunnedah Family Support is now set up as a donation point for redundant mobile phones, with the requirements that the phone must still be useable, before it is then set off to a technician and information wiped to become a new repurposed phone.

Michael Jeh shares Hannah’s story A powerful message about domestic violence has been conveyed to Baradine residents through the Small Steps 4 Hannah program.

Michael Jeh, educator and Sma l l Steps 4 Hannah ambassador, presented a two-hour session on recognising the early warning signs of coercive control at a workshop hosted by the Baradine CWA on Monday, 14 October.

The Brisbane-based public speaker said he is passionate about finding ways to engage w ith pe ople acr oss issues like domestic violence, bully ing, racism and inclusion. “ The Small Steps 4 Hannah foundation is dedicated to the tragic domestic violence mu r der of H a n n a h Clarke and her three children,” Mr Jeh said. “ Ha n na h a nd her child ren, A aliyah, Laianah and Trey, were killed by Rowan Baxter when he set their car on fire in 2020.

“Hannah’s Story is a special program which highlights the red flags

of coercive control.

“These are everyday behaviours that we are all familiar with and h ow t he s e m ome nt s can often be the first signs of an unhealthy relationship.

“Coercive control is a pattern of behaviour used by abusers t o est abl i sh p ower a nd control over their v ictims through fear and intimidation. “ Violence aga i nst women is one of the great unspoken tragedies of our time and the amazing thing about it is that it can on ly be f i xed by one group in society – men!”

A former cricketer, w h o p l ay e d f o r t h e M a r yle b o ne C r i c ke t Club and Oxford University, Michael Jeh was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and emigrated to Australia as a refugee at the age of 15. As well as a public speaker and journalist, he is a wildlife guide in Africa and takes clients on conservation focused safaris.

His presentation was a poignant tribute to the memory of Hannah and her children, as well as thought provoking and challenging.

VIEW CLUB NEWS VIEW Club hosts Spring Garden Trail.

The focus of the Coonabarabran VIEW Club’s October meeting was on the final arrangements for our Spring Garden Trail, featuring historic homesteads and a scenic drive along the Warkton Road.

Original plans by organiser extraordinaire, Lindy Swanson and assistant, Sue Stephenson, were brought into reality on Sunday, 13 October, when 200 people took advantage of the chance to see four homesteads that have been lovingly restored in beautiful mountain surroundings.

Words cannot be found to thank the Mackay and Knight families for the opportunity to see these wonderful homes and out buildings. Much love has been the key to the restoration of these homes and a glimpse of

things of the past.

Over 70 years ago, I was fortunate to have a wonderful friend, Janet Mackay, Mark’s aunty, who invited me on several occasions to stay at “Oakleigh” for the weekend. I was taken aback to see the old homestead standing, so proud and polished, with gardens to enhance the perfect picture. All outdoor buildings used many years ago for various purposes have also been preserved and still in use.

Among the many trees sits a strongly-built swing and a tennis court, no doubt the features of past gatherings. New raised garden beds, installed by Mark and Margo, give a modern twist in a different era.

The Mackay family purchased “Oakleigh” in 1947. Andrew and Jill took up residence in

1962. Mark and Margo have lived there since 2002.

Stephen and Louise Knight have also lovingly restored and modernised the property “Tannabah” with pergolas to take advantage of the swimming pool and tennis court and beautiful mountain views. Trees planted 35 years ago give shade and added beauty to gardens and back outdoor areas.

Garden three, Main Camp, was built by Geoff and Alice Knight in the 1950s and is now the home of Sebastian and Melinda Knight. It was great to see the saltbush hedge around the vast house area – probably a backup for harsh times!

Lawn and garden beds enhance this historic building including a new enclosed and outdoor pergola.

House, the home of Alix and Alexander Knight, is a smaller 1950’s cottage, tastefully restored with newlyestablished gardens. The fully-restored original shearer’s quarters was indeed a feature here.

Also along the Warkton Road one can see and appreciate the old School of Arts Hall, opened in 1905, and still in use.

Springfield House, extended by Syl Blackburn in 1911, to be used as a maternity hospital, is also an interesting stop.

OBITUARY

The death occurred o n 2 5 S e pte m b e r o f wel l - k now n Ba rad i ne fa r mer, Ian Eastbu r n, and graveside funerals ser vice was held in Baradine on Wednesday, 9 October at the Baradine Cemetery.

Ian William Eastburn was born on 9 August 1933 to John Alfred and

Mary Kathleen Eastburn, better known as Jack and Molly.

From Jack’s dair y it quotes, “Molly was sick this morning so I took her to Coonabarabran, and she had a son about 5 o’clock. He weighed nine and a half pounds, had brown hair and blue eyes, both were doing

S o o n c a m e H a r r y, Colin, Kevin, Anne and David. Ian, being the eldest, grew up leading and supporting the young e r s i b l i ng s and this leadership role continued later in life to his extended family and in his community involvement.

Ian’s schooling was conducted th rough co r respondence, l ed by l oca l gove r nes ses Frieda and Silvia Worrell.

He attended the Coonabarabran High School, finishing ahead of his class in most years.

After finishing school, Ian started share farming at Goolhi, after hearing that a Mr Thompson was looking for someone to manage his farm. Ian didn’t need any farm machinery, as it was all supplied.

After a few years at Goo l h i he m oved on to sha re fa r m i ng at Cla raway, which was owned by the Williams’ family at the foot of the Bu l la way Mounta i n.

He had made enough money from share fa r m i ng at Goo l h i to purchase his own farm equipment.

During this time Ian e n ro l l e d i n N a t i o n a l Service in the Air Force, completing the first six months before taking time off to come home for harvest. Ian returned to service after harvest to complete the final stage of h i s Nationa l Service.

Gordon Worrell, late o f B a ra d i n e, p a s s e d away on 16 September 2024.

Imagine, September 1969, and we are at the Coonabarabran football grounds. Number 1 Oval is packed to capacity with a sea of black and w h i te, a n d b l u e a n d ye l l ow. I t wa s g ra n d final day for Group 14 a n d Co o n a b a ra b ra n was pegged as the favourites – and to be named as the recipients of the Clayton Cup. However, the mighty Magpies were swooping ferociously on this warm, spring day and the

Baradine men had other ideas.

It was a ner ve w re c k i n g g a m e a n d the opposition had 14 on the field. The score went back and forth, it was 8-6 in Coona’s favour, it was a vicious battle.

Then, the final, and very important-winning try was awarded to the big, strong front rower – number 11.

This player was in his prime, he was fit, fierce a n d d ete r m i n e d . H i s shoulders were broad, he stood 6’ 2”, he was 16 stone of pure muscle.

He had a passion for the game and he gave it his

A u b u r n , Syd n ey, I a n Eastburn and Dorothy Honeysett were married, which was the beginning of thei r 69 yea r s of marriage together. Soon after they took over the family farm at Lynwood, starting their family in 1956 with their first child John, followed by Peter in 1960, Ronald in 1962 and Jennifer in 1964.

As the life of a farmer, seasons come and go, both good and bad. Ian often said that during the tough times, freerange pigs and milling of cypress pine on Lynwood saved them.

This period also brought together lifelong friends Harold and Iris Hyde and their son Allan.

After the devastating drought of 1965, which dealt a blow to Ian’s farming aspirations and made him reconsider b e i n g a f a r m e r, h e exper ienced a r un of reasonably good seasons that restored h i s co nf i d e n ce. W it h renewed faith and a lot of ha rd wo r k , Ian purchased the neighbouring property “Stansbury” in 1968 from Harold and Meg parsons.

With more land, Ian needed more staff, so Cliff Evans and his family moved into the Lynwood homestead, fol lowed later by Dick and Pat Hewson’s family, while To m Va r t y s e r ve d a s a live - in stockman at Stansbury.

Losing their only daughter, Jennifer, in 1971 was devastating

for the family. Moving fo r wa rd must have been extremely hard for everyone.

A f te r fa c i n g s o m e more tough times, Ian had to let some workers go. During the farming operations his lifelong f r i en d, I a n Wo r re l l worked alongside him, har vesting crops and marking each other’s lambs. Now the Eastburn boys were big enough to help they took on various roles as well.

Ian became a community leader and was involved in several co m m i t te e s , m a k i n g many lifelong friends with whom he would enjoy a beer on some Saturday afternoons at the Great Western Hotel in Gwabegar. Those friends became instr umental in helping on his farm with Brian madden, Bear Howe, Talky Anderson, Boof Collison, Bully Campbell, Baldy Pallier, Dick Anderson and Ted Dewson washing down the dust with a few big bots at the end of the day. He carted wheat with Talky Anderson and h i s b oy s , b a cke d u p mostly with Jack Andrews in good seasons.

Some of the shearers he employed over the years on the farm were Dave Andrews, George Williams and Dave and Artie Harris. Ian would say he wasn’t fond of shearing, but he would love to sell wool every day of the yea r if he could.

Ian was actively

involved in community organisations, including the Gwabegar Silo Co m m it tee, a nd h e became one of the founding di rectors of the Pr ime Wheat Association, which today is known as Grain Corp, participating in regular meetings in Narrabri.

H is dedication to the r u ral f i re B r igade in Gwabegar was acknowledged with a 50 -year ser vice cer tificate prior to his retirement to Baradine in 2005.

Following the legacy of his father and grandfather, Ian joined the Masonic Lodge and provided timber from their property, Lynwood, for the construction of the Baradine Temple.

Ian had a love and passion for rugby league, playing for Gwabegar in the Group 4 competition when not busy on the fa r m. H e wa s a l ways a ke e n s u p p o r te r of the Baradine Magpies and Wester n Subu r bs Magpies, later becoming a West Tigers supporter.

Ian and Dorothy travelled everywhere for their boy’s games each week , n o m at te r th e weather, always there during the wins, losses and draws. He’d analyse their games during the l o ng d r i ve h o m e to Gwabegar and kept a close eye on the family tipping competition in recent years, holding high hopes for his Tigers for next season with new young players like Galvin

Gordon “Percy” WORRELL all – every match, every season – but this try and victory was pretty darn sweet.

He was k nown to many on the footy fields as “Grunter”, because you could hea r hi m coming. This is the legend of Percy Worrell.

Gordon Percival Worrell was born on 16 October 1942 to parents Percival and Dorothea Wo r re l l i n B a ra d i n e Hospital and was delivered by Mrs Esme Rice, who later became his mother-in-law. Percy and Doris were proud to have a son after two girls – Kathleen and Helen – and he later became a big brother to Marjorie.

They grew up on their isolated farm out in the Pilliga and they shared thei r childhood with th e i r Wo r re l l co us i n s, who were based at “ E r r i n b r i” at Keneb r i.

These were tough early times and he and his cousin John would lay rabbit traps and sell the skins for their little bit of savings.

Gordon and his three sisters would ride their push bikes into Kenebri to attend school each day. At the time Kenebri had 60-70 students and one teacher. Gordon did not fly unde r the ra d a r a n d wa s of ten sent out of the classroom fo r m i sbehav i ou r. H i s son, Gary, now owns the school teacher’s house and the kids would roam about and play in the old classroom, looking fo r t h e i r Po p’s n a m e etched on the wall.

In 1954, when Gordon was aged 12, his parents purchased “Linkwood”

and the family moved further down the road to Gwabegar. After two years at the Gwabegar Public School Gordon l ef t a n d g ot h i s f i r s t job, working for Harold Parsons on his property as a stick picker. He then became a roustabout in John Tym’s and Miller’s shearing sheds.

Gordon always loved cars and had many in his younger years. Gordon would own the cars, but his best mates, Bernie Col l ison o r Scr uf fer Devoy, were the drivers and would wipe them out – how they survived those wild, reckless years we will never know.

Gordon worked alongside his father to run the farms “Linkwood” and “Kurrajong”, where they grew crops and ran cattle and sheep.

While working on the fa r m G o rd o n s ta r ted playing footy for Gwabega r and f i l led his spare time with training and game days. In 1959 Joe Finlay, the then president of the Baradine Magpies Football Club who had hea rd of this young 17-year-old lad, asked hi m to play fo r the Baradine Juniors where, after one game, he was then selected for the F i r st G rade team the following weekend.

Gordon played First Grade footy for Baradine fo r 17 ye a r s , e x ce pt for one year when he protested against being moved from First Grade to Reser ves. That year was 1973, so he headed back to Gwabega r and captain-coached them to the grand final

against Wee Waa. He finished his time as a player under the Baradine banner in 1976 and 1977 at the age of 3 5. He gave up af ter h e s m a s h ed h i s face when hitting a goal post; his facial injuries were such that he was told not to play footy again and so ended a 19-year career of footy with the Magpies.

A s a G ro u p 14 representative, Gordon was always a front-row fo r wa rd , n u m b e r 11, with Russell Chilstone o r Des M i l som as the othe r p rop. H e was also a Western District representative; he was played in the 1969 team t h a t p l a ye d a g a i n s t the British Lions’ touring team in Parkes, which was played in snow.

He was approached

by St George Dragons to trial at Kogarah for them, but he couldn’t leave his father to work the farm by himself.

A m o ng s t a l l of th i s foot y time he was at tracted to a pret t y blonde – Nea Rice, and after cour ting for two years the relationship faltered when Nea moved to Sydney. But they never lost touch a n d i n 1969 G o r d o n p roposed and they married on 24 January 1970, and a wonderful ce l eb rat i o n wa s had with 250 guests on a hot, summer’s night.

They went on to h a ve a fa m i l y o f s i x chi ld ren - th ree boys a n d th ree g i r l s. T h ey sold “Ku r rajong” and bought a new property “Yowie”. As there was no house on the property

Af te r reti r i ng and moving to Baradine in 2 0 0 5, Ian was unsu re what he would do with his time, joking “Mum will probably have me moving pot plants from one side of the verandah to the other each week.”

He sti l l had a keen i nte rest i n fa r m i ng, always asking how much rain the farms had measured and needing to know the sheep, cattle and wool prices, even after moving to town.

He continued to pa r t i ci pate i n Lodg e meetings and took on more roles in the RSL right up until the ANZAC and VP days this year.

Ian instilled a strong work ethic in his boys, ensuring they never did half a job. The three boys a l wa y s l o o ke d u p to their Dad for guidance encouragement a n d a p p r o va l i n a l l a s p e ct s of l i fe, f ro m wo r k ex p e r i e n ce s to financial decisions. He was a dedicated family man, always there for Dorothy, the boys and their families when they needed h i m, and he was immensely proud of all his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

His commitment and dedication to his family and community organisations will be deeply m i ssed by anyone who knew him.

they bought a house in Ba radine and settled the re. At the ti me, he also bought the p ro p e r t y “ E to o” a n d the next few years were s p e nt i m p rov i n g t h e property.

Gordon had a terrible accident in 1988 after falling off a horse and he spent three months in hospital. His young sons stepped up and with the help of family and friends and good neighbours, they helped ke e p t h e p r o p e r t i e s going. But the accident impacted his health and physical abilities for the rest of his life.

Gordon was also very community minded and wa s th e p res i d ent of the Baradine Pony Club fo r m a ny ye a r s, w i t h the club having up to 8 0 r ide r s at it s pea k .

He was also the gate keeper for the Baradine PA&H show for 32 years a n d wa s o n e o f t h e first suppor ters of the Ba radine Campd raft.

H e wa s a wa rd ed l ife memberships to all three organisations and along with his wife, Nea, he was made a Patron of the Baradine Campdraft.

Ver y much a family man, he enjoyed the company of his c h i l d r e n a n d l a t e r, grandchildren. He was a very proud grandad o f 15 g r a n d c h i l d r e n and in recent times a g reat g ra ndfath e r.

He loved watch i ng hi s sons and then hi s g randdaughte r s play footy for the Magpies.

H e d i d n’t ta ke m a ny holidays, but did like the odd fishing trips with his good mates. He enjoyed

the countryside around him and intimately knew the whole surrounds of the Pilliga – the tracks, roads and lines of the scrub.

When his health failed, Gordon became a resident of the B a ra d i n e Re s i d e nt i a l Aged Care, not really w h e re h e wa nte d to be, but he was a muchloved resident and enjoyed the company of the other residents.

H e co u l d s t i l l g o o ut to the footy and club and enjoyed his footy tipping and watched every game of the last N R L co m p et i t i o n . H e loved to chat about his footy days, his picks for the tipping comp and how the current Magpie teams were tracking.

A quiet man, he lived a simple life. Never being dictated to by time, he was up at sunrise and wor ked till sunset. He worked hard and earnt everything he had.

Gordon will be ve r y sad l y m i s sed by his wife Nea, children Gary, Warwick, Adrian, Donna, Julia and the late Cathe r i ne, his daughters- and sonsin - laws, his ex tended family and many friends.

A his funeral cortege was led from Baradine Oval through town and a graveside service was held at the Ba radine Ce m ete r y o n F r i d a y, 4 O c to b e r, a n d wa s attended by a very large n u m b e r of m o u r n e r s from all of his various walks of life.

Rest in Peace.

AROUND THE SCHOOLS Tooraweenah Public Moorambilla Congratulations to Bonnie Alison and students from Michelle Leonard’s Moorambilla Voices Choir who performed at Dubbo Regional Theatre on the first weekend of the school holidays.

The performances were nothing short of outstanding and featured the dedication and talent of the students and wider Moorambilla team. The emotive performance featured the choral singing of original music, dance, drums and even film footage. Congratulations to all involved, it was a performance to remember.

Tooraweenah Show The Tooraweenah Show was a huge success, with a high number of community members attending over the long weekend. The pavilion was strongly supported with reported record entries. Congratulations to students who entered their handicrafts, artwork and fruit and vegetables in the show.

Thank you to Mrs Jenkin for assisting in the show display and school entry organisation.

Special mention must go to Xander FrenchHughes who was successful in the dog-trial events. Xander is showing passion and talent with his dogs, Coco and

Butch. Congratulations to Xander on his first and second placings.

Transition to school Our first transition session of the term saw students listen to stories, complete ‘findthe-difference’ activities, play barrier games, make shapes with playdough and match sticks, as well as trying out a new app called rED Writing on the iPads to practice correct letter formation.

A great time was had by all, and we look forward to welcoming our Transition students back to school next Monday.

Coonabarabran Public Despite the forecast rain, Stage 1 headed out to the Warrumbungle National Pa rk for a fantastic day of adventure and geography. Dressed in raincoats and keen to learn about ‘People and Places’, the students learnt how to measure and record temperature and wind speed, identify man-made things in the camping area and draw split rock on the nature trail.

The rain allowed us to see water running down the rock walls and the creek beginning to run.

We heard lots of frogs and the kangaroos were h a n g i n g a r ou nd t he campsite. The students were ver y resi l ient and enjoyed the walk through the canyon and recognised the beauty of the bush on a rainy day.

We finished off the day with a fun game of ‘predators and prey’ and returned to school with a busload of very wet, cold and tired adventurers.

WWF and Australian Museum seeking local quoll knowledge Researchers are calling on local to assist them with information on lost mammals of the region, with a particular focus on quolls.

WWF-Australia, together with the University of Adelaide’s E nvi ron ment I ns titute and Australian Centre for Ancient DNA, and N SW N at i o na l Pa r k s a nd W i l d l ife Se r v i ce, have been wo r k i ng in the War r umbungle reg i o n ove r th e pa s t few weeks, collecting sediment deposits from rock y overhangs that might have preserved th e D N A of l o n g - l os t mammals of the region.

So many of Australia’s mammals disappeared even before Europeans arrived in the region, as the first wave of invasive species (cats and rabbits) swept across the continent. This was fol lowed closely by land clea r ing, more i ntensive ag r icultu re, and the introduction of foxes. The assemblage of species w ith i n the landscape now is co m p l ete l y d i f fe re nt to what we would have seen l it t l e ove r t wo centuries ago.

This change in mammal composition has meant that many of the functional roles of missing mammals like bandicoots, bilbies, and bettongs have been lost. These species are ecosystem engineers and turn over vast quantities of soi l, i m p rovi ng wate r penetration of the s o i l s u r fa ce, b u r y i n g s e e d a n d i m p r ov i n g germination rates.

T h ey eve n b u r y l e a f l i t te r, w h i c h c r e a te s conditions for coolerburning fires.

One of the most intriguing lost mammals from the region is one o f Au s t ra l i a’s ‘q u o l l’ species, once referred to as the ‘native cat’.

While the largest species of quoll – the ‘s p ot ted -ta i l ed q uo l l (also known as the tiger cat or tiger quoll) is still o cca s i o n a l l y s e e n i n the Coonaba rab ran area, another smaller species of quoll once also inhabited the region.

W h a t i s n’ t k n o w n , h o w eve r, i s w h i c h s p e c i e s i t w a s . Wa s i t t h e we s te r n q u o l l , which was once found from Western Australia and across much of i n l a n d A u s t r a l i a? O r was it the eastern quoll, which was found along the eastern seaboard, a n d wa s a p p a re nt l y last seen on mainland Australia in Sydney in 1963?

But what does Coonabarabran have to do with this puzzle?

B a c k i n 19 7 2 , t h e Au s t ra l i a n A r my wa s on a reconnaissance trip to War rumbungle National Park, togethe r w ith some Australian Museum s taf f, and repo r ted l y rediscovered the ‘e a s te r n n a t i ve ca t ’ – also known as the eastern quoll.

If we can verify this report then we’ve got our answer as to which species of the smaller q u o l l s i n h a b i te d t h e region, before we even need to look deeper into the DNA records. But we can’t

find anything about this repor ted rediscover y.

We’ve s e a r c h e d t h e Australian Museum mammal collection and archives but turned up nothing.

So, we a re keen to ask the com mun it y – do you remember this smaller species of quoll in the Coonabarabran region?

Whereas the eastern quoll has two colour forms – a tan colour with a white tail-tip, and a black colour.

• Eastern quolls and western quolls can also be differentiated by the lack of spots on the tails, whereas the larger spotted-tailed quoll, you guessed it, has spots on its tail.

• Still, it takes quite a bit of practice to identify which species of quoll you are looking at, even for the experienced observer.

• The larger species of quoll which still persists in low densities across parts of eastern and central NSW is the spottedtailed quoll – the only quoll with spots on its tail.

Wild dog populations cause concern Populations of wild dogs are known across the reg ion, but have recently been causing i nc r easi ng i ssues i n the Coonabarabran and Coolah areas.

Sightings and impacts of wild dogs are on the rise, so it is important to report sightings to improve knowledge of wild dog populations and provide assistance to landholders with coordinated management programs.

Wild dogs can cause sig n i f ica nt d a mage t o l ive st o ck production enterprises, particularly sheep and goat producers, through predation and disease transfer. Maintaining a viable sheep and goat enterprise can be very difficult when wild dogs are present.

During last week, severe heat-wave conditions hit the northern region of South Australia.

The highest temperature last Thursday, 17 October, reached 43.7 degrees at Coober Pedy. This was the third highest October in over 80 years. The hotter October days were 43.9 on 21 October 1971 and 44.5 degrees on 31 October 1995.

The first one in 1971 set up a wetter-thanaverage November in our region, while the second one was followed by a wetter-than-average November within a week.

Much-needed rainfall with thunderstorms arrived very quickly after last Thursday’s 43.7 degrees at Coober Pedy over most of Victoria and the lower half of NSW. Geelong was belted by 69mms, most of this in 45 minutes, resulting in Geelong’s wettest October day in 154 years of records.

More rain and thunderstorms are expected in our region near the end of October and early November and again around 19 November.

Lord Howe Island, after the driest January to March period with only 92mms since 9mms in 1985, has now recorded its warmest August to September period in 113 years of records. The previous warmest was in

1996, which was notably wet in our region the last four months, but did dry out to be a notably hotter in Victoria during January and February 1997.

It has continued to be extremely hot and dry in the Gulf region of Queensland.

Palmerville, which has had no rain for 218 successive day, has experienced the warmest June to October period in 128 years of records, surpassing the previous warmest June to October period of 1897.

It was very hot and mostly dry in our region from November 1897 to February 1898.

The third-warmest June to October period at Palmerville was in 1952, when we were saturated by well above-average rainfalls.

Some places in our region have managed above-average rainfalls from last April to June, but the summer of 195253 was not hot.

S e a - s u r f a c e temperatures around most of Australia have continued to be notably above normal, a trend which began in October last year.

Ocean temperatures are currently above 29 degrees and over 30 degrees off the coast near Broome and also in the Gulf region. This will mean more tropical cyclones than usual.

Zoe scores a third at Sand Green Championships Coonabarabran golfer Zoe Holcombe competed in the 2024 NSW Sand Green Championships event over the weekend in Grenfell, and came equal third in the state!

Warrumbungle Shire was well represented, with three ladies from Dunedoo also playing.

Sharon Nott, of Dunedoo, won the event with a great 77 off the stick on the last day to take the win.

Coona Physie Club shines at Zone Competition The Coonabarabran Physical Culture Club delivered an outstanding performance at the Zone Junior and Ladies competition, held last weekend in Tamworth.

Jazz Ford received first place in the 6 years, and was also a part of the winning 5/6 years team.

11 years fifth place getter, Madeleine Hartberg and second place recipient, Sophia Leedham.

Mother and daughter duo, Brooklyn and Leanne McWhirter, placed second and third in their divisions.

Edith Dakic is off to Sydney after placing fifth place in the 8 years.

The event, hosted by the Tamworth BJP Physie Club, saw competitors converge from across the region, but it was Coonabarabran’s small yet dedicated 5/6 years’ team that stood out, achieving remarkable results.

Leanne McWhir ter, from Coona Physie Club, expressed pride in the club’s achievements.

“We are always super proud of all who just turn up and have a go,” Leanne said.

“Physie, like ever ything you do, rewards effort – not just with awards and accolades, but also with life skills and friendships.

“It’s a sport that empowers girls of all ages.”

The club’s only team, the 5/6-yearolds, claimed first place, marking a fantastic success for the young competito r s, many who were competing on the floor for the first time.

“The year before last was a win for us and last year all teams placed, so we’re doing very well.

“We’re definitely punching above our weight,” Leanne said, noting Coonabarabran was a relatively small club, with an average of 30 to 50 members, compared to larger clubs like Tamworth, which boasts around 100.

“Despite being one of the smaller clubs, we continue to excel, and that’s something to celebrate!”

Coonabarabran will host is annual club competition this weekend.

New mayor, deputy ready to lead in the Moree Plains Moree Plains Shire Council has a new leadership team at its helm following the election of councillors Susannah Pearse and Wayne Tighe to the roles of mayor and deputy mayor, respectively.

The two councillors were elected to their positions at the first meeting held last Tuesday.

Cr Pearse thanked the councillors for their vote of support on the day and the community for its support at the polls.

“I’m incredibly honoured to serve as the second female mayor of this shire and to walk in the footsteps of all of those who have come before me,” Cr Pearse told the meeting.

Cr Pearse said she would treat the position of mayor with the reverence it deserves and would serve council with pride and dignity.

During her speech, Cr Pearse particularly acknowledged former mayor Mark Johnson and the shire’s first female mayor and prominent community figure Katrina Humphries.

Cr Pearse also praised the support of her husband Oscar, their three children and broader family for supporting her work as the previous deputy mayor and now mayor.

The newly-elected mayor also made mention of the diversity of the new council which now boasts a 6-3 female majority as well as two Aboriginal councillors. The council also boasts a mix of councillors from town and

The vote was conducted via ballot paper method.

In the first count, Cr Pearse received four votes, Cr James three votes and Cr Cassells two votes.

Cr Cassells was eliminated from the election process.

The final vote was Cr Pearse six votes to Cr James three votes.

Councillors again agreed to create the position of deputy mayor.

Nominations were received from Crs Wayne Tighe and Peter Mailler.

Cr Tighe succeeded five votes to Cr Mailler’s four votes and was

elected as deputy mayor.

In a brief speech at the meeting, Cr Tighe thanked councillors and re-emphasised his passion for Moree.

Crs Pearse and Tighe were elected for two-year terms to their positions.

Western newspapers honoured at annual Country Press NSW gala awards dinner The 2024 Country Press NSW Annual Conference and Awards Dinner has been a resounding success, with 106 members, sponsors and guests attending the regional event in Dubbo last Thursday and Friday.

President Lucie Peart, Gilgandra News, was re-elected unanimously to lead the organisation for an eighth consecutive term.

She received a special appreciation award from the membership for her outstanding work over many years to rebuild Country Press NSW, and celebrated the occasion by singing an Elvis hit song to launch the ‘Dub-Vegas’ themed awards dinner.

At the dinner, the major guest of honour, Minister for Agriculture, Regional NSW and Western NSW, Tara Moriarty, delivered an address on the NSW government’s commitment to the regional newspaper industry, to be delivered through a $3 million second package of the Regional Media Fund.

Other invited guests attending the dinner were Federal Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton, Nationals MLC Sam Farraway, Labor MLC Stephen Lawrence, Nationals MLC Sarah Mitchell, and Jamie Chaffey (former Country Mayors Association chair).

The Awards of Excellence, which received a 25 per cent increase in entries this year, was again the feature event for most attending newspapers.

Publishers of newspapers in the western regions of NSW, including The Courier (Narrabri), Gunnedah Times, Coonabarabran Times and Coonamble Times, were again among the awardees.

In the journalism section, Lily Plass of the Coonamble Times was the Young Journalist of the Year, while Sharon Bonthuys of the Narromine Star was Journalist of the Year (the second time she has won the senior category).

Runner-up in the Journalist of the Year category was Sam Woods, of the Gunnedah Times.

The Narromine Star was judged to be the Best Small Newspaper, a new category open to newspapers printing less than 700 copies per week.

Wanda and Ian Dunnet, of the North Western Courier, have retired from the industry as threetime winners of Best Paid Newspaper, with their Gunnedah Times taking the award this year following previous wins in 2023 and 2022

The Courier was also a stand-out publication in the awards, winning Best News Coverage with a powerful series on proposed pathology service changes at Narrabri Hospital. The publication was also awarded Best Front Page for its entry, ‘Bad Blood’, also relating to the proposed pathology changes.

The Riverina Grazier took top place in Best News Story, with coverage of a foreign investment venture gone wrong, while the Gilgandra Weekly received Best Sports Story with an in-depth look at disparity between men’s and women’s sport in the country.

Dubbo Photo News returned to the winner’s circle this year, taking out Best Free Newspaper and also receiving the inaugural Best Sports Coverage award.

In the main photography sections, the Wellington & District Leader achieved a double by winning Best Human-Interest Photograph, and Best News Photograph, while Parkes Champion Post took out Best Sports Photograph.

Deniliquin Pastoral Times was a stand-out in the advertising section, winning the Best New Advertising Product.

Building bans and buybacks floated for flood zones Housing developments in flood-prone areas should be banned and properties in very high-risk areas must be eligible for buyback schemes.

That's according to a federal parliamentary inquiry into the responses from insurers to major flood claims, which also called for changes to processing procedures including cash settlements.

Flood emergencies in NSW, Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania over a period of 10 months in 2022 led to a record 300,000 insurance claims.

More than two years later, many people were still waiting to move back into their homes.

"Long delays due to poor communication and disputes over causation resulted in emotional, mental health and financial strains for many families," Labor MP and committee chair Daniel Mulino said.

The report pushed for an end to further development and housing approvals in high flood-risk areas, in addition to finding a way to discourage banks from financing builds.

"We need to stop the building of more homes and businesses in high-risk areas," Mr Mulino said.

"This has been difficult due to the decentralised nature of decision-making."

The committee urged state and territory governments to create buyback schemes for households with very high flood risk if mitigation efforts were unlikely to work.

It noted a large number of properties would not be insurable if they were deemed to have that level of risk.

"This number will grow with climate change and continued development," Mr Mulino said.

"It is for this reason that the committee believes that some form of government intervention will be required."

However, the report did not pinpoint exactly what that should be and instead said it should abide by principles including affordable cover and community mitigation efforts.

It called for policy owners to be given more details on cash settlements and a 30-day cooling off period after accepting offers.

People living in flood-affected communities, insurance executives, regulators and consumer advocates were among those who contributed to the report released on Friday.

Mr Mulino said the 86 recommendations would lead to better claims management and long-term approaches to reducing the nation's underlying risk of flood.

"Only if we move forward on both fronts can we truly make progress for Australians at risk of future flood events," he said.

A dissenting report from coalition MPs backed many recommendations including planning building reviews but claimed the overall report offered limited solutions to make insurance more affordable.

Opposition MPs recommended addressing an imbalance in funding skewed in favour of response and recovery instead of mitigation, and for policy holders in high-risk areas to be able to decline flood coverage.

"The coalition urges the government to avoid interventionist tendencies which have been shown to make insurance unsustainable, expensive and transferring risk to the Australian taxpayer," they said.

NDCAS Community Christmas Drive to bring joy to those in need during festive season A new Community Christmas Drive initiative, organised by Narrabri and District Community Aid Service (NDCAS), will bring joy to people in need during the festive season.

The shire community can be part of the initiative by donating new unwrapped presents and gift cards at drop-off locations across Narrabri and Wee Waa from October 14 to December 6.

The aim is simple ... to ensure children and families across the shire in need of assistance have a Christmas present under the tree.

For its first year, NDCAS has set the goal of presents for 200 families (about 800 individual gifts).

“Christmas is a great time but it can be very challenging for some people,” NDCAS community engagement and communications coordinator Kayla Nehrkorn said.

The NDCAS team came up with the concept of a community Christmas drive after receiving donations of gifts from businesses last year.

“We thought let’s get the whole community behind this,” NDCAS client pathways officer Gail Anderson said.

With the cost of living impacting people across the community, the initiative’s aim is for people of all ages to have a present at Christmas.

NDCAS estimates that the number of community needing assistance has increased 30 per cent.

For many, Christmas comes with pressure. People often feel pressured to live up to the hype of Christmas and ensure there are gifts under the tree even if they are limited financially.

This pressure sometimes sees people spend money on gifts while missing out on food or getting behind on important living costs including utilities and rent.

And many of those people who fall behind in payments turn to NDCAS for assistance.

“Still pay for your rent, buy your food and pay your bills. We can arrange a present,” Gail said.

Three arrested after increased property theft NSW Police have arrested and charged three young people after another series of break-ins, vehicle thefts and fires in the Gunnedah area - all three alleged offenders were refused bail.

In two weeks to Thursday, October 10, Gunnedah recorded 11 break-and-enter offences including attempts with entry gained and seven stolen motor vehicle offences. Gunnedah Police and specialist police from within the Oxley Police District were tasked with investigating the offences.

Officers said about half of the stolen vehicle incidents resulted from thieves breaking into a house, locating the car keys and stealing the vehicle.

A least one motor vehicle stolen was recovered in the Hunter Valley and two persons were assisting police with inquiries.

One recent victim of crime said their car was locked and parked when it was stolen from a Curlewis driveway.

“I believe they have gotten in it and pushed it out of my driveway - otherwise I would have heard it start - and hot-wired it somehow,” the victim said.

“It’s the effort that they went too to take it is what gets me the most.

“With the cost of living, I couldn’t afford insurance so I’m basically stuck and being a single mother who can’t transport herself to work, it makes it hard.”

Many recent incidents in Gunnedah have occurred near the McLean Care Independent Living Units on Apex Road and Callander Avenue. At least two vehicles were stolen from residents in the area where several more attempted break-ins were also reported.

Police officers have since spoken

with the McLean Care manager and said they will continue to work with management in an effort to reduce incidents of crime.

Vehicle fires were also reported near the Milroy and Wandobah Road intersection, on the Oxley Highway near Carroll as well as Donnelly Playing Fields, Gunnnedah, among other locations.

NSW Police recently appealed to the public for assistance to locate a man on an outstanding arrest warrant. Officers said Korrye Stevens, aged 32, who has since been arrested and bail refused, was wanted on an outstanding warrant for break and enterrelated offences.

Police said yesterday no further break-and-enter or stolen vehicle offences had been reported since October 10. The uptick in local crime follows new data from the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) which shows a decline in the proportion of young offenders formally diverted from the court system by way of a police-issued warning, caution, or youth justice conference.

In the last two years, the youth diversion rate fell from 51.3 per cent in 2022/23 to 46.8 per cent in 2023/24.

During the same period, youth court actions increased 10 per cent, while the number of cautions under the Young Offenders Act fell 10.5 per cent and formal warnings fell 7.3 per cent.

BOSCAR executive director Jackie Fitzgerald said diversion can reduce reoffending and avoid or delay the stigma and harms associated with a court appearance.

She believed diversion was being driven down by an increase in the seriousness of offences committed by young people such as robbery and break-and-enter, as well as a decline in less offences such as cannabis possession which

typically would warrant diversion.

Other statistics recently published by BOSCAR show in the last 10 years to June 2024, four of the 13 major crime categories increased significantly in NSW including domestic violence-related assault (increased 28.3 per cent, rising in in 12 of 13 regional locations); sexual assault (increased 107.2 per cent, rising in all 13 regional locations); sexual touching, sexual act and other sexual offences (increased 31.5 per cent) and steal from retail store (increased 30.7 per cent).

During the same period, seven of the 13 major crime categories significantly declined including murder (decreased 25.8 per cent), robbery (decreased 37.2 per cent), break and enter dwelling (decreased 38.0 per cent), steal from motor vehicle (decreased 32.6 per cent) and other stealing offences (decreased 34.1 per cent).

Gunnedah police urged anyone with information that might assist in further investigating crimes to contact Gunnedah Police Station on 6742 9099 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Officers also said those posting information on social media who have information that might assist, are encouraged to share that information with Gunnedah Police or Crimestoppers.

Farm leaders have urged the federal government to consider the unique circumstances of family farming businesses in changes to superannuation laws that recently passed the House of Representatives.

NSW Farmers Business Economics and Trade Committee chair John Lowe said the changes to the Treasury Laws were set to impose new taxes on unrealised gains in superannuation holdings, including family farms – meaning farmers could be taxed for income they will never see.

“This law is not going to affect the people with hundreds of millions of dollars in their superannuation accounts, but rather the hard-working

Australians who own their businesses or farm assets in structures such as self-managed superannuation funds,” Mr Lowe said.

“Self-managed superannuation funds are a common tool farmers use to manage their farms and aid business succession, and now, their farms are at risk because the government wants to rush through new tax laws without considering how agriculture operates.”

As several accounting bodies and financial associations also raised their concerns around the bill, Mr Lowe said it was critical that any changes made to tax laws did not place unfair financial pressure on family farms among other small, family-owned businesses.

“These proposed changes could well force many farmers to sell the farm they operate or lease to their children, unless they’re able to take out even more loans to try and meet new tax obligations,” Mr Lowe said.

“NSW Farmers supports sensible amendments to super – not taxes that will enable the super-rich to continue unaffected, while the small businesses and farm family businesses suffer.

“Aussie families and young Aussie farmers all deserve to be able to run their own businesses without crippling bureaucracy and taxes and there’s no doubt we need our family farms to stay if we want to have our own, homegrown food and fibre.”

Supermarkets blamed most for nation’s cost-of-living woes While many businesses are charging higher prices, the everyday nature of grocery shopping and consumer's suspicions about being kept in the dark has them mostly blaming supermarkets for cost-of-living issues.

An Australia Institute survey of more than 1000 people suggests 83 per cent of people believe supermarkets are responsible for a great deal or some of the blame for financial pressures.

More than four in five blamed energy companies, while 73 per cent said the onus was on banks and 71 per cent on the government.

Asked about the most visible source of rising prices, three in five people said groceries, 21 per cent utilities and seven per cent transport.

Report co-author Leah Heap said the message from consumers was loud and clear.

"Australians are pointing the finger at supermarkets as public enemy number one in the costof-living crisis," she said.

"It's clear Australia's supermarket duopoly is on the nose with the electorate."

A Woolworths spokeswoman said there were a range of factors behind rising costs.

"Many of the increased costs households are facing are also unfortunately making it more expensive for our suppliers to producers food and groceries - from electricity and fuel, to rent and interest rates," she said.

Coles was also contacted for comment.

But Swinburne University law and corporate governance specialist Helen Bird said there had been a perception among consumers that supermarkets were not being entirely up front.

She said the amount of time people spent at supermarkets also affected perceptions.

"There's the feeling that shoppers aren't getting the full story," she told AAP. "(The sentiment against supermarkets) has to do with the essentiality of the products because everyone has to eat.

"If the price of electricity goes up, you feel it, but not like day-today ... you feel it at the checkout because you pay more immediately."

Chief executive of the Australia Food and Grocery Council Tanya Barden said the entire food supply chain was under pressure, which was behind price rises.

"The uncomfortable reality is food manufacturing in Australia is under immense pressure.

Commodities like cocoa, sugar and packaging as well as energy and gas prices have all risen and unfortunately show no sign of easing," she said.

"In this supply-led inflationary environment we need supply-side solutions. Support from government for domestic manufacturers to boost productivity will be vital in easing that inflationary pressure."

Coles and Woolworths have for months been accused of ripping off suppliers, suffocating competitors and price gouging customers.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has taken Coles and Woolworths to the Federal Court, after accusing them of misleading discount pricing claims.

Anthony Albanese has gone after the two supermarkets for shrinkflation - when items decrease in size or quantity while prices stay the same.

The Nationals have been pushing for the forced break-up of the giants, while Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has accused them of muscling out competition by holding undeveloped land near their stores.

A Resolve poll found 85 per cent of people supported the consumer watchdog taking action against the major supermarkets.

The same poll showed half those surveyed backed a proposal by the opposition for supermarkets to be broken up if they had too much market power.

Coles and Woolworths make up about two-thirds of Australia's supermarket sector.
