Students given a head start at Careers Expo Finding a fulfilling career can be confusing and overwhelming for teenagers, so the recent opportunity to meet with employment and education providers and receive careers guidance was very welcome.

Crafty crew delights visitors WAACI’s pop-up expo held in Coonabarabran from 15-17 September proved to be an eclectic, eccentric delight. Emma Harvey, Coonabarabran’s latest blow-in, went along to check out the display.

It’s day one of the Wa r r u m b u n g l e s A r t s and Crafts Incorporated pop-up exhibition at the Anglican Hall. I come in from the rain, drop a fiver in a biscuit tin by the door.

Immediately I am greeted by the friendly faces of WA ACI (pronounced ‘wacky’), one of Coonabarabran’s longest-standing c o m m u n i t y o rg a n i sat i on s, a nd a network of local creatives known for their arts and craf t meet- ups and sc r u m pt i o us m o r n i n g teas.

The display table at the centre of the hall is laid with an array of gorgeous handmade items. Not for sale, but well worth a look - cosy crochet blankets, i nt r icate patchwo r k quilts and (a personal favourite) a hand-knitted fox in a basket.

Towards the back of the room is the ‘Trading Table’, which collects smal ler hand - craf ted items for sale - beanies and tea - cosies and crochet Chr istmas ornaments.

I am checking out the framed paintings nearby when a voice pipes up from behind. “ T h a t ’s m i n e r i g h t t h e r e.” D o r ot h e a Mor r issey, member of WAACI, gestures at an A3 canvas of six cats silhouetted against a full moon, each adorned with tiny, shiny diamantés.

“I was just admiring that!” I say.

Diamond art is a hobby that, like many h a n d i c raf t s, en j oyed a new popularity during long COVID -19 lockdowns. A cousin to cross-stitching and paintby-numbers, it appeals for its repetitiveness and rhinestones - a meditative activity with a sparkly p a y - of f. T h e re a re a few diamond artworks on display today, tiny d i a m a nté s a r ra n g e d in intricate mosaics of sunsets and night skies.

“You’d need a steady hand,” I observe.

“Yes, it’s very good for hand-eye coordination,” says Dorothea.

She’s no fine art snob.

I n fact, she buys he r

diamond art packs from Crazy Sam’s down the road. Like many WAACI members, she’s in it for the fun and friendship, as much as the art.

“That’s what it’s all a b o u t,” s a y s WACC I p re s i d e nt, M a u re e n Davenpo r t, w hose soft water colours can be spotted about the place. “Fun, and a bit of socialisation.”

From hand-sewn bunting to baby dolls in Christening garb - it’s an eclectic collection to match an eclectic bunch. Each artist has their chosen speciality or medium and, to force a cheesy metaphor, they all come together in one vibrant mosaic.

Towards the end of my visit, WAACI treasurer Rowanne Cox asks if I’d like to stay for morning tea. The tables are laid, platters of homemade goodies on display. I’ve b e e n eye i n g of f t h e chocolate slice since I got here.

“Oh, if I must.”

Motorcyclists honour cops Police and community members were involved in the Wall to Wall remembrance ride which left Coonabarabran last week.

by CHRIS WARD A contingent of seven motorcyclists left Coonabarabran last Friday morning.

The group were participating in the Police Wall to Wall remembrance ride.

The riders consisted of police and community

members from the Coonabarabran region.

They kicked the ride off in style with a barbecue and bacon and eggs for breakfast before saddling up for the first part of their ride.

T hey were g iven a n es c or t out of t ow n by highway patrol cars as they headed toward their

destination, the National Police Memorial Wall in Canberra.

Local detective, senior constable Mick Morris who is completing the trip on his KTM 790 led the way.

The riders eventually linked up with the rest of the western division at Bathurst and from there

on formed a larger group for the rest of the trip into the nation’s capital.

The Police Wall to Wall remembrance ride began in 2009 and was inspired by a similar initiative in America called the Ride

for the Fallen.

Like its namesake, the Wall to Wall honours those police who have served and died in the line of duty.

It is also used to h igh l ight the positive image of police in the promotion of motorcycle safety and awareness.

Burn workshop revives tradition Fire and burning practices helped Aboriginal people sustain Country for thousands of years. A local cultural burn workshop aimed to teach about tradition.

by JIMMY WHALAN An Indigenous cultural burn workshop was held on 13 and 14 September 2022 at Burra Bee Dee. Aboriginal fire practitioner, Den Barber, presented the workshop and offered his knowledge on traditional fire and

burning practices.

T he workshop was attended by local Aboriginal Elders, c om mu n it y mem b e r s , and school students and offered an opportunity to learn about Indigenous culture and connection to country.

was first introduced to cultural burning in 2010 when he attended a burn workshop in Cape York.

He t he n s t a r t e d t o put that knowledge into practice and conducted his first cultural burn at a pr oper ty ca l led ‘ Ng urrampaa’ near Yengo National Park.

C u ltu ra l bu r ns l i ke these a re a practice thousands of years old and with this program, M r B a r b e r s o u g ht t o revive these practices.

A s wel l as helpi ng to keep Indigenous traditions alive, cultural burns deliver a range of environmental benefits

including promoting the growth of native grasses, killing weeds and scrub, reducing f uel loads to prevent catastr oph ic bushfires and increasing biodiversity.

Mr Barber said c u lt u r a l bu r n i n g wa s most important to protect against bushfires.

“ W i l d f i r e s , pa r ticu la rly i n southeast Australia have been destroying Country for decades with the most r e c ent Bl ack S u m mer mega-fires of 2019-20,” Mr Barber said.

“A b o r i g i n a l p e o p l e survived in this country for literally thousands of

years without destroying the beauti f u l C ountr y that Eu ropea ns fou nd and colonised in 1788. “ We ne e d t o r e v ive t h e c u lt u r a l bu r n i n g practices by Aboriginal people now t o sta r t helping to heal Country and prevent these wildfires.”

Sue Davies art to be auctioned

SPACE Art Galley will be hosting a gallery gathering and auction of artworks by the late Susanne Davies from 11.00am – 2.00pm this Sunday, 25 September.

Sue Davies, who passed away in July of this year, was a respected and beloved local artist, and former teacher at Coonabarabran High School, known for her indiscriminate kindness and generosity.

The family of Sue Davies and SPACE invite you to enjoy her works and take part in the auction.

WEATHER WATCH Further heavy rain fell in our regions late last week. The heaviest falls to last Friday,16 September, were Narrabri 57.4mms, Wa l g et t 4 4 . 8 m m s , Gunnedah 50mms, Tamwor th 51mms and Pilliga 68mms.

T he prev ious heav y daily rainfalls during the month of September at these towns did occur in 1903, 1917, 1973, 1998 and 2011.

It is interesting to note that all these past cases d id lead t o ver y h igh rainfall to well into the following summer season in our region, although in the case of 1998 it was very wet in both October and November, but dry in December 1998 and January 1999 - then very wet in March and April of 1999.

Maximum temperatures for the first three weeks of this September have been three degrees below normal in Coonabarabran and following the coldest August since 2010, it is shaping up to be the coldest August-September period since 1974. In addition, the highest temperature to date in Coonabarabran in this period has been only 20.5, the lowest absolute maximum temperature to this point in 143 years of record. The previous

lowest was 21 degrees in 1920. However, warmer days up to 28 deg rees at the end of September and early October are expected.

Sydney, which has its wettest July on record, has had 33 days of rain for July and August altogether and this was the greatest number of rain days since 1934.

Coonabarabran has had 27 days of rain altogether for July and August and th is was the g reat est number days since 28 days in 1996 and the second highest in 143 years.

Cobar has had 27 days altogether, a new record over the last 60 years.

Condobolin has also had 33 days, the most on record in over 50 years.

Most of Victoria is facing its coldest September since 1992, when many places did not reach 21 degrees at all for the month.

T he outer easter n suburbs of Glen Waverley had its wettest winter since 1991 and Berwick, which also had its wettest winter since 1991, had its wettest August with 149mms since 1939, when 183mms fell.

Warragul, further east, recorded 187.8mms during August, the wettest also since 220.8mms in 1939.

Lambs T he lamb market performance this week reflected improving quality driven by the increase in new season lamb numbers, with numbers rising 38% and the national heavy lamb pricing lifting 7c/kg cwt week on week.

E v ident ly, w it h increasing numbers of new season lambs, slaughter volumes remain robust, although softening slightly from significant highs over the past 4 weeks, to record 386,000 head for the week.

New season lamb volumes and the strong slaughter volumes indicate significant numbers of lambs are continuing to be purchased out of the paddock and sold direct to the processor.

New season lambs continue to operate at a premium historically. The weekly average is 11% or $19 higher than the 5 year average at $191/head.

Cattle supply National cattle supply remained tight this week and operated 23% or 8,261 head below the weekly average for 2022.

Queensland recorded one of its smallest we e k ly v olu me s i n a full selling week for the year, yarding 8,969 head.

This was 41% below the 2022 weekly average and 8,380 head lower than the corresponding week in 2021.

Saleyard supply in WA continues to be restricted, with this week’s yardings operating 20% below the

2 0 2 2 we ek ly average.

E v ident ly, r e st o ck i n g intentions follow ing a generally strong season across the state is driving tighter supply, although yardings have increased in recent weeks as spring develops.

In the cattle market this week, most categories were firm this week with marginal changes. Robust fe e d l o t d em a nd f r om NSW provided buoyancy to the market and also provided insights to the feedlot landscape across the eastern seaboard at present.

Feedlot landscape The NSW feeder price has risen 19c over the past four weeks to operate at 539¢/kg lwt. This is a 5% prem iu m t o the

national price of 515¢ and a 62¢ or 13% premium to Queensland’s price of 477¢/ kg lwt.

P rice performance relative to supply in NSW shows feedlot demand is significantly stronger in NSW than Queensland.

This indicates pen space

Seeing the children’s beautiful smiles ever y d a y a n d m a k i n g t h e m h a p py while watching the children grow and assisting in the progress of their development. It is absolutely fantastic to see the progress the little ones make week to week.

2. Kids say the darndest things.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve heard a youngster say or do? My kids say so many funny little things during the day, but one that tickles my fancy is the way one of my kids say my name…Huvy.

3. What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining the industry? The industry is very unique, no two days are the same; it is very rewarding and challenging at the same time.

4 . Wha t i s t he mos t rewa rd i ng thing about working with children?

Creating a safe environment for all children and having fun, seeing their little faces and excitement to come to Suvy’s is the most rewarding, the love these little people give is the most rewarding to me and they are happy.

5. What is your favourite thing about Coonabarabran? My favour ite things in Coonabarabran are the mountains, clock tower and the fact that we, as a community, are unique. There is no place like home and home is Coonabarabran.

6. If you could sit down and chat with one person for 30 minutes who would it be and why? This is a tough one, I would have to say my Nan, Shirley. Just to talk about absolutely everything and anything. She was one special person in my life - always was and always will be.

7. What hobbies do you have away from work? Painting with acrylic paint - this includes, Aboriginal art, abstract and anything I can create.

It’s my Zen and makes me happy.

8. You’ve had a stressful day, what i s you r way o f w i nd i ng down?

Unwinding for me is going home to my partner and the two fur babies, it makes me happy. Also going out to my grandparents’ house and being with them.

9. What is something you know now you wish you knew when you

were younger? To cherish every moment you have with loved ones, be present.

10. What’s your favourite activity to do with the kiddies? Sensory activities, painting and craft.

11. If you were Prime Minister for a day. What would you do or change?

I don’t think a day is long enough for much change to happen or be seen.

12. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? My Nan told me that there isn’t such word a as ‘can’t’ - change everything to ‘I can’.

13. What more can be done to address suicide rates in Australia? I know suicide is a growing problem, we need to be more aware of the signs and care for one another.

14 . I f yo u we r e n’ t wo r k i n g i n childcare what would you be doing?

Hairdressing, another passion and dream that I have.

15. If you had to live without one of the following things, what would it be - coffee, toilet paper or chocolate, why? Definitely not coffee - that is an essential! I’d say chocolate because saying toilet paper would be gross.

16. Describe your perfect weekend?

The beach, seeing dolphins and re l a x i n g w i t h my p a r t n e r a n d spending valuable time together.

17. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? In 10 years...mmmm married with kids, but most of all - happy.

18. We have just come into spring what is you r favou r i te thing o r activity to do at this time of year to thaw out from a long winter? Cup of coffee in the morning sun and admiring the new flowers that have come up, especially the bulbs that I have planted.

19. Name one thing that Coona needs most? There’s a few things that come to mind, but I miss mini golf, and more activities like that in the town and Miniland etc. They’d bring more reason to come and visit town and also create more things for the children to do in town.

20. Swooping season is back what hints or tips do you have for people to avoid being preyed upon by magpies? Don’t walk anywhere, just drive - hahaha.

St Lawrence’s Public Speaking finalists.

Coonabarabran Public Crazy Sock Day C r a z y S o c k D ay really did bring out some wacky socks! This is a fun way to raise awareness of those who are less fortunate than us and who may not have enough warm clothing and basic necessities.

C r a z y S o c k D ay has become a part of Year 5’s traditional Vinnies Winter Appeal and raises money that goes towards assisting Vinnies do the wonderful job they do of caring for others and those in need.

Thank you Year 5 for your dedication to your Vinnies Charity.

On Friday, 2 September, Mrs Mel Evans and 29 students from CPS attended the North West Athletics Carnival in Tamworth.

In keeping with the pattern of weather for athletics’ carnivals our own and the zone carnival - this day was no different, with a cold, grey sky and windy with intermittent rain.

However, our students were resilient and tough and showed great sportsmanship and determination competing in their events with dedication and enthusiasm.

There were a few high achievers on the day including Will Birtles, who made the final in the 8 years 100m and Sienna Milsom, who placed 4th in senior girls’ shot put.

The biggest smile on the day belonged to Michael Collison, who came first in his 13 years 100m final.

Michael will now travel to Sydney for the State Athletics Carnival at Homebush.

Congratulations to all students who competed and appreciation to the families of those who helped provide transport and cheered everyone on in the miserable conditions.

CPS had another champion last week when Will Weatherall competed at the regional Spelling Bee finals. With only 45 seconds per word and six rounds of competition, both Lily and Will surpassed so many others to finish in first and third positions respectively.

A wonderful achievement and we are very proud of them both.

Will now travels to Sydney to compete at state competition level.

We wish him every success.

Stage 3 were fortunate to be involved in a six-day program called “Mustering Growth”, which is a well-being program for rural and regional children. The program is funded by Rural Aid and was run by Heidi and Roger, who were very impressed with the level of engagement and participation by our students.

Throughout the week the students identified feelings and emotions

they experience at different times and discussed ways they deal with difficult situations. The program focused on using tools and strategies such as helpful thoughts, belly breathing and practicing gratitude.

The program ended with each student receiving a certificate and we all enjoyed a sausage sizzle.

In a final display of sporting achievement Elara Jenner, Ava Stanton and Mokoia Birtles went to Maitland to represent North West at the state rugby 7s championships. The girls played well and won two of the five games. Well done girls.

Over the Odds Paul Theobald, Bathurst horse trainer As a successful trainer at Bathurst for the past 25 years, Paul Theobald is looking forward to his home-town Cup meeting on Sunday.

Although he won’t have a runner in the 1800 metres Bathurst Cup, an eligibility race for the $2 million Big Dance, or the feature sprint the $110,000 Panorama, Theobald is likely to have good representation from his stable in supporting events including last start winners Power Bank and Boorawa Girl.

Paul Theobald knows a bit about Bathurst, his forebears coming to the town (now city) in 1850.

His father, Mervyn Theobald, who passed away in recent years at age 99, operated a Bathurst newsagency until he was 97.

Paul Theobald, who combines his trade as a builder with racehorse training, has prepared a host of good gallopers from his stables near the Bathurst race course, including tough sprinter Dragons Keep, the Central Districts Racing Association “Horse Of The Year” for the 2012/2013 season.

Usually with Ken Dunbar in the saddle, Dragons Keep had 11 wins and 24 placings from 74 starts and earned $192,685 prize money.

Dragons Keep won a city class race at Wyong at $36.00 and ran second at Warwick Farm and, although mainly competing at TAB meetings, set a

weight-carrying record when winning the Bracelet Handicap at Bedgerabong Picnics.

Destined to be among the best trained by Theobald, it was a frustrating run of placings to start the career of Dunderry.

Commencing racing in 2011, Dunderry, at debut, was unplaced in Sydney then had six seconds and two third placings at the next eight starts.

After the initial seven placings at mainly TAB meetings, Dunderry was taken to Bedgerabong Picnics and again ran second, as favourite, in a Maiden Handicap to the George Wright, Parkestrained Be My Honey.

The breakthrough win came in the 1000 metres Maiden Handicap at Orange in 2012 when ridden by Clare Pettigrew, who was the the rider again when Dunderry, two starts later, won at Queanbeyan.

From then on, with Ken Dunbar mainly the jockey, Dunderry built an imposing record of 14 wins and 32 placings from 124 starts, with prize money totalling $207,190.

The resilient Dunderry raced until a rising 12 year old and career highlights included winning the Bill Aspros Cup at Bathurst.

Although a winner over 1200 metres at Bathurst and 1400 metres at Louth and the Marthaguy Picnics at Quambone, the Theobald-trained Bathurstian was better known as a stayer.

second over 3000 metres in The Barb on Bathurst Cup day and twice won the 2400 metres Iron Horse at Wellington, the second time after being sold to Narromine trainer, Michael Plummer.

Overall, Bathurstian had five wins and 23 placings from 77 starts.

All Sixes was another good performer for the Theobald stable, winning the $30,000 Darley Tiara at Muswellbrook in 2015 and the Cup at Orange and twice being placed in the Soldiers Saddle at Bathurst.

Always prepared to travel to place his horses to advantage, Theobald had four winners on the day at Gosford Picnics and a treble at a Marthaguy Picnic meeting at Quambone.

For 22 years Dubbobased Ken Dunbar has been the first choice jockey for the stable, while Alan Barton, now the curator at Bathurst Racecourse, had a long and successful association riding for Paul Theobald at the Picnic Races.

Other riders to enjoy success for the stable have included Winona Costin, Rebeka Prest, Roy McCabe junior and Jake Barrett.

More of the Theobald family are now involved with racing, including Paul’s daughter Elizabeth Theobald, the partner of jockey Jake PraceyHolmes, being a trackwork rider for Gulgong trainer, Brett Thompson.

Premiership titles to Roosters, Magpies and Jets The Cobar Roosters claimed the Castlereagh League first-grade premiership with a thrilling victory in the grand final played at Gilgandra on Saturday, 17 September.

CASTLEREAGH LEAGUE In what was a sensational finale to the 2022 season, with mere se conds rema i n i ng on the clock, the Roosters’ captain coach and lock, Loma Atuah, took the ball from the back of a scrum that was packed deep in Gilgandra territory and set himself on an arcing run down the blind side, just managing to force his way over in the corner to edge the Roosters ahead 2 8 t o 2 6 , send i ng the army of Rooster Boosters positioned in that area delirious!

This was a game to be savoured, with the lead changing several times a nd t he s c or e s b ei n g locked twice, including 12-all at half time, and while the Roosters got the silverware, the Panthers lost no fans, as they gave it their all throughout the highly-entertaining affair with both sides scoring five tries each in front of a large and vocal crowd.

With 13 minutes remaining in the match, the Panthers were looking as if they might be able to go on with it after they had reeled in a six-point deficit, fol low i ng a c onver t ed try to the Roosters five minutes after the break, and having run in three unanswered tries they held a n a l l-i mpor t a nt eight-point lead with the scoreboard reading 26 to 18 in their favour.

That eight-point le ad wa s shor t l ive d , however, and the

Roosters responded with a converted try with nine minutes remaining; and it was very much a case of ‘game on’ with just two points separating the two teams.

Those final nine minutes were as intense and gripping as it gets, a nd it wa s n o t u nt i l Atuah’s last-gasp effort that the premiership was decided!

Lady golfers host annual open tournament After the rain l a s t T hu r s d ay, t h e Coonabarabran golf course had to be inspected to see if the lady golfers’ Open Tournament could go ahead. The decision was decided that, with two days of drying, the course would be playable. Unfortunately, teams f rom Wee Waa, Tamworth and Barraba were unable to attend due to road closures, however

visitors from Gunnedah, Dunnedoo and Quirindi played in the event.

The course was heavy, proving difficult for some players. T hankfully, a hearty lunch was provided at the end of play.

The main event was the Val Gardiner Memorial Trophy awarded to the scratch winner. This event was won by Val’s daughter Michelle Johnston, and

Women’s tackle comp plans

by CHRIS WARD T he C o onaba rabra n Unicorns have thrown t he i r s upp o r t b eh i nd a local women’s tackle competition.

Club president, Madeline Wilson said the Unicorns would back the concept if Castlereagh League representatives tabled the idea.

Ms Wilson took it a step further and predicted the idea would not only be popular, but it could reinvigorate the sport in the community. “ I don’t th i n k clubs wou ld have a problem getting enough players to make a team,” she said.

“Almost all of the girls I have spoken to who play league tag have said how

good it would be to have a local tackle comp.

“A nd there’s a lot of talent in our area, it would m a ke for r e a l ly g o o d games and I think you would find the sport would grow off the back of it.

“I think you’d probably find more spectators come to games to watch.

“I think there’d be more engagement on game days

and more people getting involved.”

Ba rad ine Mag pies president, Adrian Worrell sa id the club wou ld consider a ny proposa l that was suggested. “ I don’t know how it would work, but if the girls are interested and we have enough players then we’d be supportive of it.”

Golfers contest monthly medal WEEKEND GOLF A good small field contested the Chapman Monthly Medal on Saturday, 18 September.

The Chapman family have been sponsoring this event for many years and we thank them for this.

The winner of A-Grade was Brad Noakes with a net 73. Brad played off the handicap of zero and with the course so wet, this was a great score.

The runner-up was Frank Nottle, followed by Mick Chapman in third and Mark Wilson, fourth.

B-Grade went to Stan Capewell, who must also like a wet course, scoring

a net 74.

Runner-up in this grade was Steve Morrissey with net 75. Third was Gary Chapman and W Bennell was fourth.

NTP’s on the 4th and 13th went to F Nottle, 7th and 16th to B Noakes and 8th to G Chapman. Gary also won the shoot out.

This weekend we have a stableford on Saturday

and Sunday.

On 1 October is the Astronomy Cup, 4BBB medley stableford. The Australian National University is sponsoring this event. Grab a new partner and show them around the course.

Galaxy takes out soccer comp (FROM BACK PAGE) In a game dominated by defence Harry Willoughby was awarded Man of the Match for his work in keeping a clean sheet for Coona. Jack Richards and goalkeeper Cameron Whittall, who was safe all game, were also prominent in that area.

The Coonabarabran team that played in that game comprised Jacob and Luke Bonello, Billy Elton, Jorian Fleming, Riley Manning, Isaac Menz, Jack Richards, Amaniel and Abiel Singh, Cameron Whittall and Harry Willoughby. Others who played throughout the year but were unavailable for the grand final included Marcus Colantonio and Riley Fleming.

The side’s success was a great team effort, with all players playing significant roles. Coona was the best defensive team in the competition, only conceding six goals, and had the secondbest in attack, scoring 37 goals. However, the midfield domination is where the side gained an edge over other teams.

Marcus Colantonio ended the year with the most goal assists - six for the season while Jorian Fleming was the highest goal scorer with 11.

Coona Galaxy shoots and scores grand final win The Coona Galaxy Soccer team concluded its successful season with back-to-back wins in Gunnedah over the first two weekends in September - the last win being the grand final.

Semi final T he boys semi-f i na l victory against United, which set up their grand f inal appea rance, saw t he s ide t r iu mph 3 -1 i n m i s e r a ble pl ay i n g conditions after the scores were locked 1-1 at half time.

The Coona boys opened the scoring with a Marcus Colantonio goal. United levelled before half time, setting up an exciting second half.

The second half was dominated territorially by Coona, who were unable to turn their dominance into goals for much of the half.

However, the stalemate was broken when a long range shot from Jorian Fleming and a slip from the United goalkeeper saw Coona jump out to a 2-1 lead.

With time running out, United were forced to play aggressively, leaving holes in their defence, which allowed for Riley Manning to finish the match with another goal, making the final score 3-1.

M a r c u s C ol a nt o n i o was awarded man of the match, with his goal and domination in the midfield being the main difference between the two sides.

The semi-final win set up a grand final appointment for Coonabarabran against Curlewis, who had beaten Coona the previous week in the major semi.

The Coona boys were well prepared and started t he g a me we l l . T he y dominated the play early with a Jorian Fleming shot going just over the bar before a lovely chip goal by Luke Bonello left the Curlewis goalkeeper stra nded. T h is placed Coona in front around the 10-minute mark.

Jorian Fleming narrowly missed another attempt before half time, resulting in the Coona sides heading into the break with a 1-0 lead.

I n t he s e c o nd h a l f defence dominated, with both sides having limited opportunities to score. The possession was shared evenly for the majority of the second half. However, a tense last 10 minutes saw the game dominated territorially by Curlewis.

Fortunately for Coona, the pressure could not be turned into goals, with the game finishing 1-0 and Coona celebrating their success.

Cotton’s Nuffield scholar to explore sustainable land development Mungindi’s Tim Houston will travel from the family farm across the globe to research how to sustainably transition land from grazing to cropping in order to achieve a positive triple bottom line outcome.

Mr Houston has been awarded a Nuffield Scholarship, supported

by CRDC and Cotton Australia, to study the topic.

Using the scholarship, he plans to visit countries in South America as well as the US and Canada.

Mr Houston is one of 19 emerging leaders from Australian agriculture who have been awarded prestigious 2023 Nuffield Scholarships.

The scholars will travel in Australia and overseas to study innovative ideas, techniques and systems that will benefit their businesses and the broader agricultural industry.

Thanks to the generous investors, each 2023 scholar receives a $30,000 bursary to invest in travel and research.

They will visit, learn from, and collaborate with some of the world’s leading agricultural businesses and research institutions.

Mr Houston, alongside parents Rob and Sally, runs Sandholes Farming. They crop approximately 11,500 hectares between Mungindi and Inglestone (southern Queensland).

They rotate wheat, barley, chickpeas, sorghum and dryland cotton. They also run a Brangus

Mr Houston will use his Nuffield Scholarship to explore how farmers in other parts of the

world are navigating the challenge of land use change and hopes to bring this information back to Australian landholders.

that are suited to dryland farming, but are still underdeveloped.

I will study how landholders that wish to develop their land, can do so in a way that provides positive

Newest citizens welcomed to Moree Plains The newest Australian citizens from across the globe who have found their way to the Moree Plains Shire were welcomed in an official ceremony held in the Moree council chambers earlier this month.

Moree Plains Shire Council mayor Mark Johnson proudly conducted the ceremony which officially recognised 10 new residents who have made the commitment to their newly adopted country and to the Australian values.

Mr Houston is also keen to explore how governments and landholders can better work together to support sustainable farming development.

He feels collaboration between the two groups could be enhanced.

With the United Nations stating in 2009 that world food production would have to double by 2050 to keep pace with global population growth, Mr Houston feels that Australian agriculture has an opportunity, and a responsibility to play its part in meeting future demand.

“We’re so excited by this cohort of Nuffield Scholars. They’re from a wide range of industries – cropping, fishing, livestock and tree nuts – and we’ve got every state and territory represented,” Ms Redcliffe said.

She said this group will tackle a range of issues that are impacting Australian agriculture. Some of those topics are sector-specific and others affect the whole industry.

“All our scholars are tackling topics that are important to the sustainability of the industry they love – whether that’s by optimising productivity, meeting market requirements, enhancing biosecurity, reducing chemical inputs, adapting to climate change or improving animal welfare,” she said.

The Bureau of Meteorology has declared a La Nina event is underway in the Pacific Ocean and communities in eastern Australia should be prepared for above-average rainfall over spring and early summer.

Bureau of Meteorology head of long-range forecasts Dr Andrew Watkins said the bureau's threemonth climate outlook shows a high chance of above average rainfall for most of the eastern half of the Australian mainland and eastern Tasmania.

“During La Nina events, waters in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean are cooler than normal, and waters in the western tropical Pacific Ocean warmer than normal. This causes changes in wind, cloud and pressure patterns over the Pacific. When this change in the atmosphere combines with changes in ocean temperature, it can influence global weather patterns and climate, including increasing rainfall over large parts of Australia”.

Dr Watkins said while La Nina criteria have been met, most models forecast this event to be

weak to moderate in strength, likely to peak during spring and ease during summer.

“La Nina is not the only driver influencing this wet outlook.

To our west, a significant negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) event is underway. We expect the IOD influence will reduce in late spring or early summer,” Dr Watkins said.

“The Southern Annular Mode (SAM) is also in a positive phase, and likely to remain positive into summer. Positive SAM during summer pushes weather systems south, which increases the chance of rain in New South Wales, eastern Victoria and southern parts of Queensland,” he said.

Dr Watkins said all these climate influences push Australia’s climate towards a wetter phase, and together have shaped our outlook for the coming months that shows more than 80 per cent chance of above average rainfall for many parts of the eastern half of Australia.

With catchments already wet, the flood risk remains, particularly for eastern Australia.

‘All aboard’ on Picnic Train in the North West If you have ever dreamed of riding a train like the Hogwarts Express? Well, now is your chance, with the iconic Picnic Train bringing its magic to the North West with Engine R766.

Engine R766 is the only oil burner currently running in NSW and the first mainline train in the world to be completely stripped and regauged, allowing it to operate on NSW tracks.

Picnic Trains operations manager Sam Roach has been driving for Picnic Trains for two years and said the experience is a memorable one.

“People can pack their

picnic baskets and enjoy a wonderful trip through the North West countryside, experiencing some locomotive history,” Mr Roach said.

The trips coincide with the 70th anniversary of Engine R766 entering service.

“On October 1, 1952, the train first entered service, so people can enjoy a trip on its anniversary,” Mr Roach said.

The North West steam train rides will be depart from Werris Creek on September 29, from Gunnedah on September 30 and from Narrabri on October 1, 2 and 3.

The Story:

The Boulder and the Gold

There once was a king who decided to do a little experiment. He had a giant boulder put right in the middle of the street. He then hid near the boulder to see who, if anyone, would try to move it out of the way.

Strawberries & Rhubarb with French Toast

for 5 minutes or until warm. Set aside to cool.

STEP 3 To make French toast, whisk eggs, milk, sugar and vanilla in a medium jug until well combined. Pour into a medium shallow dish.

Heat a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat, and add half the butter and heat until sizzling. Dip 4 slices bread in egg mixture for 20 seconds on each side. Pan-fry for 2 minutes on each side or until light golden. Transfer to a plate and keep warm in oven. Repeat using remaining ingredients. Serve rhubarb and strawberries with warm French toast.

1 bunch rhubarb (about 250g-300g trimmed rhubarb stems) 1⁄4 cup caster sugar 250g strawberries, hulled and large strawberries halved 3 free-range eggs 3⁄4 cup reduced fat milk 1⁄4 cup caster sugar 1⁄2 tsp vanilla extract 50g butter or margarine 8 slices sweet brioche bread or sourdough white bread

A good source of vitamin C which contributes to formation of collagen and thus plays a role in healthy gums, teeth, bones, cartilage and skin.

STEP 1 Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Trim and discard rhubarb leaves. Wash stems, pat dry and cut into 6-7cm lengths. Place rhubarb and 2 tbs sugar into a bowl. Toss to combine.

STEP 2 Arrange rhubarb in a single layer on tray. Roast for 10-12 minutes (depending on thickness) until almost tender. Toss strawberries with remaining 1 tbs sugar. Stir strawberries through rhubarb. Roast
