Warrambul Warruwi Sky River Path officially opens

A show to remember

Local people gathered at Coonabarabran’s Neilson Park on Saturday, 15 March, to celebrate the official opening of the Warrambul Warruwi Sky River Path, a project years in the making that enhances public access to the Castlereagh River while embedding cultural and environmental storytelling into the landscape.

The path is par t of the Castlereagh River Rehabilitation Project and was made possible by a substantial $ 8 9 9, 0 0 0 g r a n t from the Austral ian Government’s MurrayDarling Healthy Rivers Program.

The funding has enabled significant river rehabilitation effor ts, including the planting of thousands of native species, the removal of invasive weeds and the improvement of eight kilometres of riverbank.

ca m e tog ethe r, a nd we managed to secure the highest grant. Most communities received a round $ 5 0,0 0 0 to $60,000, but we were fo r tunate enough to be awa rded nea r ly $900,000.”

Sue Brookhouse: A lifetime of giving Sue Brookhouse is no stranger to the local community, with her involvement in wildlife conservation, time at the National Parks and investment as a Coonabarabran Show committee member, her decades of dedication have left a lasting mark on the local community.

She has been involved with the National Parks for a total of 45 ye a r s , f ro m h e r t i m e a t M o u nt Ko s c i u s z ko deliver ing sk i tours in 1979, then Ku-ring-gai, the B l ue Mountai ns a n d, s i n ce 19 95 , t h e Wa r r u m b u n g l e s a n d Pilliga.

Now reti red from her roles at the Warrumbungles National Park, Sue spent yea r s ope rating the information centre and working as a Discovery Ranger.

From organising events, to educati ng tour ists about our

diverse flora and fauna on trails, Sue has had an instrumental impact on the National Parks and those who have visited.

“Knowing I have had an infl uence on the children I have taken on walk s who come back years later to tell me I am the reason t h ey c h o s e to s t u d y environmental science, is huge,” Sue shared.

Sue recalled some of her fondest memories from the Warrumbungle National parks was wo r k i n g w i t h D i a n n e Jackson at the Wa r r u m b u n g l e Pa r k s Visitor Centre.

“We accom p l i shed a lot du r ing ou r time together,” she said.

H oweve r, Sue’s dedication to the local area and its flora and

fauna was not limited to her work at the National Parks.

Wildlife conservation Beyond National Parks, Sue has dedicated 45 years to rescuing and re h a b i l i ta t i n g n a t i ve wildlife.

“We have to maintain the d ive r s it y of ou r flora and fauna; they all interact with each other,” Sue said.

Highlighting the impor tance of educating the younger g e n e r a t i o n n ot o n l y about our environment, but the importance of preser ving our native species, Sue said, “You have to start teaching kids early.

“If you can get t h e m i nte re s te d a n d to i nte ract w ith thei r envi ron ment, then

ethics and conservation w i l l fo l l ow d ow n t h e track.”

S u e h a s d e l i ve r e d talks at schools to inspire young minds, promoting understanding of our n at i ve w i l d l i fe i n th e younger generation and encouraging those interested in conservation to begin with small steps.

“Start small, every little bit counts. It is important to not lose sight and get overwhelmed,” she shared.

Life membership An integral member of the Coonabarabran Show committee, Sue has organised the ar t section and the highly anticipated Art Preview Night for many years.

In recognition of her d e d i ca t i o n , s h e wa s

awa rded a l ifeti me membership of the Coonabarabran PAI&H at the 2025 Show on 7 March.

“I had no idea I was g o i ng to rece i ve th e membership. It was a l ove l y s u r p r i s e,” s h e said.

H e r pa s s i o n fo r a r t runs deep through her veins.

“It is in my DNA; I am from a family of artists,” Sue said.

Sue highlighted the impor tance of

community involvement in the Show’s prosperity.

“The Show isn’t the Show without the i n p u t. We l o v e y o u r ar t, whether it is your first time picking up a pencil, brush or camera – or if you are seasoned i n you r craf t. We encou rage eve r yone to enter.”

Without Sue’s commitment to the co m m u n i t y, t h e Coonabarabran Show would not be what it is today.

What’s next?

Sue is now enjoying a chang e i n pace, allowing her to focus her time on things that “ill her cup up”.

“When I look at my c a l e n d a r n o w, i t i s virtually empty,” she said.

“I now have time to pick up the paint brush and play with my horses!”

Sue Brookhouse is an outstanding role-model in the community and we hope she enjoys this new chapter of her life.

CHOPPER MISSIONS Coonabarabran Around 11.00am on Tuesday, 18 March, a Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance to a property east of Coonabarabran.

A woman in her 20s was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and the helicopter’s critical care medical team for a medical episode before being transported to Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital.

Better drinking water for Dunedoo community A major improvement to the quality of Dunedoo’s drinking water is in the works, thanks to a partnership between the NSW Government and Warrumbungle Shire Council that will kickstart investigations into ways to improve the town’s water infrastructure.

T he $1.2 million investment will look at the most viable options for overhauling the water network, which is over 100 years old and uses c h l o r i n at i o n t o t r e at water from a primary and secondary bore located

a long the Ta lbraga r River.

An upgrade will ensure water is treated to a much h i g h e r s t a nd a r d a nd meets modern Australian Dr inking Water Guidelines (A DWG) to deliver safer and more

secure water for decades to come.

T his early phase w i l l lo ok at d i f fer ent infrastructure solutions including a new water t r e at ment pl a nt w it h a n aut om at e d d o s i n g and telemetry system,

n e w b o r e s , up g r ad e d disinfection technology and additional treatment processes depending on the quality of the bore water.

The concept design is expected to be complete

by December 2026 and

will bring the project to tender ready stage.

It comes on top of the $ 3 .4 m i l l ion D u nedo o wastewater upgrade that is currently underway, with 75 per cent of the funding coming from the NSW Government.

A partnership between the NSW Government and Warrumnbungle Shire Council will kickstart investigations into improving Dunedoo water supply.

Local Aboriginal Land Council and a broad mix of community members involved – we met every Tuesday for 18 months to make this vision a reality.”

The pathway features multiple sculptures and artworks created by a r t i s t s w i t h d e e p connections to Coonabarabran.

“Ou r goal was to showcase culture, education and cultural tourism,” Mr Brady said. “ We wa nted the pathway to allow people to see the river, feel the river, get close to the river, and watch the river – because we all enjoy water – and we see that reflected in the signage along the walk.

“It’s not just a pathway, it’s a co n nect i o n.

A co n n e ct i o n to o u r s u r r o u n d i n g s , to o u r Co u nt r y, to o u r r i ve r and to our community.”

Saturday’s opening event included a Sk y Ri ve r Path pa r k r un, fitness sessions,

communit y- led envi ronmental effor ts such as weeding and mulching, along with a range of family-friendly activities including plant stalls, barbecue, coffee, face painting and art displays.

Mr Brady said the path h a d a l re a d y s ta r te d attracting visitors from outside the region.

“Last night, I was here cleaning the signs, and I met people from Dubbo and Newcastle who had come specifically to check out the path before today’s run,” he said.

“It’s already drawing people into our town.”

H e a l s o a d d re s s e d the impor tance of

embracing First Nations’ culture within the community.

“Some people ask , ‘Why does ever ything have to be cultural?’

“The rea l it y i s, F i r st N at i o n s’ cu lt u re a n d tou r i sm can benef it everyone “You don’t have to be First Nations to be proud of our history.

“Even if someone d o e s n’t p e r s o n a l l y connect to it, they can still benefit from what cultural tourism brings to our town.”

A key featu re of the path is a series of s i x c h a i r s w i t h l a s e rcut words in both Gamilaraay and English, further celebrating the

area’s cultural heritage.

The walk also includes educational signs about the local flora and fauna and links directly to the Yarning Circle, a well-used gathering place within the park.

As the ribbon wa s of f i c i a l l y cu t by Aboriginal Elders, marking the completion of this significant project, Suellyn Tighe addressed the crowd.

“Yaama ever ybody.

F i r s t, I ’d l i ke to acknowledge that we a re on Gam i l a roi Country,” Ms Tighe said.

“I also want to thank eve r y body w h o ha s been i nvolved i n th i s journey.

“It has been long

and arduous, with challenges such as heav y rains last year, b u t to d a y, we s ta n d here in good weather, celebrating something truly special.

“This is not the end – this is the beginning of many more initiatives to come in our community.”

Mr Brady echoed this sentiment, hoping that the project would continue to evolve.

“This is just the foundation,” he said.

“I’d love to see the pathway and its cultural elements grow over the years. This is something our whole community can be proud of.”

RFS volunteers acknowledged Relying on volunteers is not unique to Australia’s rural firefighting, but dependence on them comes to the forefront when a large fire breaks out.

by LIZ CUTTS Local, regional and interstate volunteer firefighters were instrumental in battling the recent Sandstone Caves fire in the Pilliga Forest that burnt out 9,409 hectares and closed the Newell Highway between Coonabarabran and Narrabri for more than a week.

Incident controller for the Castlereagh RFS Zone, Inspector Dez White said that more than 300 Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers, along with national parks firefighters, aviation specialists and heavymachinery operators were deployed to help battle the large blaze.

“Crews came from a range of brigades including Shoalhaven, the South Coast, Queanbeyan, Cooma, Sydney, the Liverpool Range, as well as Gunnedah and neighbouring districts,” she said.

“When we manage a fire locally there are

a few decisions to be made before it is turned into a Section 44, which was what this fire had become. The Section 44 declaration allows us to bring in all the external help; there are a lot of conversations on what resources we need and how we manage the volunteers and agency resources as well.

“There is always an emphasis on giving all the volunteers a good experience when they come to the country to help, and being able to provide them with local accommodation, such as the Camp Cypress facility in Baradine, allows us to do that.

“We could not fight a fire on that scale without the help from volunteers.

They answered the call quickly and came to our aid, which is really appreciated.”

Sixty of the RFS volunteers stayed in Baradine for four days, with strike teams travelling out to fight the fire on rostered day and night shifts.

Snowy Monaro Group officer, Brett Lees said the strike teams consisted of volunteers from the Southern Tablelands area surrounding Canberra, Goulburn, Yass, Crookwell, Monaro and from the far South Coast down to Eden and the Riverina Highlands.

“A request was put out through our area command last week for a deployment to the section 44 up here in the Warrumbungles,” he said.

“You have local mobile crews that have been fighting the fire for a few days, this extra support allows them to take a well-earned break from near-constant fire response duties.

“Usually when we do these deployments we end up in a base camp, which is just a huge, big tent with a stretcher and a sleeping bag. But the accommodation in Baradine gets a five-star rating from us! They’ve gone above and beyond for us, considering that they were given just

24 hours’ notice of our arrival.

“We have members in our teams that are retired and those who have taken annual leave from their work to help out. We do it because we like to do it. There is great camaraderie amongst all of us; we have just gelled and become a team.”

The RFS said the cause of the ignition of the Sandstone Caves fire is still under investigation and specialist fire investigators have been out in the field to locate the ignition point for preliminary reporting.

Members of the public are reminded that it is important to remain vigilant regarding bushfires, especially on days of high-fire danger.

Any unattended fires should be reported to triple zero and if there is a fire in the area, members of the public can stay up to date by using the Hazards Near Me app or by visiting the RFS website.

North West Equestrian Expo gallops closer When the Coonabarabran Show is over and the autumn leaves begin to spread their golden wings, we know it is not long until North West Equestrian Expo nears the starting gate and the call to the post rings out across town.

M a ny t i mes , a nd i n f a r aw ay pl a c e s , the mention of Coonabarabran and the regaling of a fun week can be heard as visitors warmly describing our l it t le c om mu n it y. A lawyer in Sydney CBD a nd a spa rky f rom Ballina have both been heard to recount their memories of dragging t h e i r c h i l d ’s h o r s e through the central west where they enjoyed the frosty mornings, toasty campfires and happy, smiling teenagers sadd l i ng hor s e s a nd s h a r i n g t e a m s pi r it dur ing Expo week before. “ We l o v e d C o o n a Expo,” they proclaim.

T h i s , now h i st or ic event on our community c a lend a r, i s p a r t o f ou r ver y sma l l-t ow n fibre, as it brings 650 horses ga l lopi ng i n from across the state.

These horses and their riders can compete in 11 disciplines, and bring along with them, more than necessary parents, supporters and school staff.

T h e r e we r e a f e w ch aot ic ye a r s befor e t he E x p o c om m it t e e wisely decided to cap entries at 500. Unlike some of the small ponies that attend, organisers know their limitations.

With 65 school already entered, the town knows that every motel will be filled, every restaurant a n d t a k e aw ay b u s y to extreme and superma rket shelves shopped bare. A motel owner was once heard to descr ibe the week as the “icing on their motel cake”. Beds full for the week with no sheet changes.

Why do we have North West Equestrian Expo?

Because we are good at hosting and running a bi g e v e nt . S o s ay competitors who have been to national titles of every horse description.

E x p o r u n s smo ot h ly and on time, there is much to do, it is fair and fun and well supported inside the arenas, in the grandstands and down the street.

Expo would be not h i ng w it hout t he greater Coonabarabran c o m mu n i t y a n d t h e

generous and consistent sponsorsh ip of r ugs , events and resources.

Way back 36 years ago, Rotary was i n s t r u ment a l i n t he first Expo in 1991 and the late Robert Cox and h i s ba nd of worker s c ont i nue t he a lways tasty and busy Rotary food stand. Robert was a wonderful supporter and contributor to its success. Rotary has been tirelessly and willingly feeding Expo for most of those years. Many is a cold soul cheered, after stumbling through the mud and freezing rain, to a beacon of warmth in the form of butter c h i c ken or pu mpk i n s oup – just t o n a me some favourites.

The Coonabarabran J o c k e y C lu b , wh o s e members also g ive generously in labour and time, accommodating horses, tr ucks and thorough fa res f rom the showground, need a mention. They w i l l s o on c om menc e thei r prepa rat ions – mowing, maintaining a nd i mpr ov i ng thei r facilities. Expo is eternally grateful for these contr ibutions among the many from others in town.

What does the community get from Expo other than queues, shortages and the loud speaker commentary, you ask?

Expo g ives back in many and varied ways.

T he biggest was the bu i ld i ng of T he Hut at t h e s h o w g r o u n d , wh i c h wa s a c h ie ve d from 10 years of profit.

T h e r e bu i ld i n g a n d ref u rbish ment of a l l the bathroom facilities make camping far more enjoyable for all visitors and horses. The upgrade of the cattle shed was made possible with a generous donation to t he S how S o c iet y t o support their grant from the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) f o r t he c at t l e s he d .

Stables built and maintained each year and the maintenance a nd upg rade of the cross-country course, considered to be one of the best in the state.

made for the last 17 years to Coonabarabran High School projects.

These include upgrading their telephone system, upgrading the library a n d t h e n e w PA i n the school hall. T he High School manages a nd prof its f rom the mercha nd ise – a nd rumour has it that pinkand-grey flat caps and hoodies are the go this year! And least of all, a donation to prize night at all the schools.

The Expo committee is both proud and honoured to give back to a community which values and encourages it in welcoming these visitors to our town.

What about Expo 2025, you ask?

Many are the unforeseen difficulties Expo has encountered and overcome in bygone y e a r s . D r o u g ht a nd flood subsidies to riders and their schools are never fa r away. A nd let us not forget the p r o bl e m at i c E q u i n e F lu a nd C OV I D a nd the many biosecurity obstacles those times created. The dedicated and tireless committee seem to cope with any cyclone or bushfire in their path.

Not ewor t hy i s t he fac t th at th is is the only school event where champions of one discipline can

c omp et e i n a not her.

Polocrosse title-holders take their pony to The Wa r r u m b u n g l e Way event to try some tricks or gallop a round the cross- cou ntr y cou rse in the one day event (ODE).

So many and varied are the riding opportunities at Expo, but mo s t c elebr at e d i s t he p a r t i c ip at i o n a n d c a m a r ad e r i e o f c o mp e t i n g f o r o n e ’s school. This is always most evident at the Six Bar, when the cheering r ises t o a dea fen i ng pitch.

A bonus for all this year is the return of m a ny h i g h s c h o o l s , i nclud i ng Na r rabr i High, and even a few inner Sydney city high schools. We will welcome you one and all.

As all these students from near and far begin t o t r a i n t hei r hor s e a nd set thei r fo cus on c omp et i ng at t he events held at the foot of the Warrumbungle mountains – our commu n ity beg i ns its prepa rations t o o.

Expo 2025 is already mounted, marshalling and has begun making its way to the barrier.

The committee hopes you will be on board for another great ride.

Building connections: Cultural housing project to support Elders A ground-breaking housing project in Coonabarabran is set to provide much-needed homes for local Elders, while preserving and celebrating Aboriginal culture.

by MOLLY SHANNON The Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Lands Council (LALC) is in the midst of creating three to four units for Elders i n t h e c o m m u n i t y.

The Indigenous I n f rastr uctu re and Susta inable Housing A lliance ( TIISH A), a group partnered with U TS, has come to Coonabarabran to help build what is known as ‘Cultural Housing’.

Coonabarabran is one of five Land Councils involved in the project, but it is the f i rst community to receive t he s er v ic e , m a k i n g it the pi lot for the initiative. The project

is a close collaboration between the LALC and the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, ensuring that cultural connection remains at the heart of the development.

Cu ltu ra l Housi ng prioritises maintaining ties with the community and the land, blending traditional culture with a modern approach.

The local community has been heav ily involved with the new project, with all ideas a nd desig ns show n to the community for approval – something Brandon Nixon, CEO of Coonabarabran L A LC, said had been appreciated.

“We’ve had so much positive feedback,” Mr Nixon said. “ It ’s g iven the community a real sense of belong ing because TIISHA is engaged and listening to what the community is say ing a nd then basi ng the pr oje c t on wh at t he c om mu n it y a c t u a l ly needs.”

T h r ou g h r e s e a r c h and discussions, Elders were identified as the group most in need of housing, leading to the decision to prioritise them for this project.

The Coonabarabran LALC received funding for the project 12 months ago a nd the land is currently

being prepared for construction.

Desig ns should be f i n a l i sed w ith i n the next 12 months, with completion aimed for 2027. So far, the project has remained locally driven, something Mr Nixon hopes to continue throughout the design and building process.

A lthough the f ina l design is still in progress, certain key feat u r es h ave be en con f i rmed. A l l u n its will be fully accessible, w ith ramps, railings and other accessibility access occupants may need, seamlessly i nt e g r at e d i nt o t h e design, combining function with aesthetics.

The standalone units will each have its own p a rk i n g s p a c e s a nd driveways, along with outdoor areas ideal for barbecues and social gather i ngs. S e cu r ity me a su r e s , i nclud i ng fencing, will also be put in place.

The Cultural Housing Project aims t o merge trad itiona l liv ing practices with contemporary housing solutions, creati ng a modern setting where t h e c o m mu n i t y c a n continue practicing its culture.

“The project has been successful and a relief for the community,” Mr Nixon said.

“One of the biggest challenges that local Gamilaraay people are facing is housing costs – so this is something that the LALC is trying

to give relief to as much as they can. “ We don’t h ave housing to make money – we have housing to make it affordable.”

The positive impact of these projects is already being felt beyond Coonabarabran.

“I think other communities can see the C oonaba rabran c om mu n it y c om i ng together and it creates some excitement in them when they learn what you can do and what you can achieve when you do come together,” he said. “ It creates that excitement and g ives them a sense that they ’re respe c t ed as Aboriginal people.”

t he f ut u r e of t he Baradine Show and whether or not we could make a go of it,” said Baradine PA&H president, Stephen Coe. “ N o w, w e a r e delighted with its success.

“A l l t h a n k s g o to the volunteers, t he r e g u l a r o ne s and the new ones.

We had a great rollup of support from s ome you ng lo c a l volunteers, who have been amazing. They i ntroduced some new event ideas and have breathed life back into the event.

I believe it is very important to get the young ones involved.

AROUND THE SCHOOLS Saint Lawrence’s St Lawrence’s Catholic School’s artwork was a big hit with the art judges this year at the Coonabarabran Show.

Some classes received first place, second place and encouragement awards, as well as many students receiving awards and great feedback from the judges. The theme for the artwork this year was ‘local birds’.

L a s t w e e k , Kindergarten, Year 1P, Year 1H and Year 2 students held their student-centred conferences with their teachers. This was a great opportunity to showcase each student’s current progress and set goals for the remainder of the year.

Year 2 has been busy becoming familiar with their new Chromebooks (computer). Each child has their own Chromebook and students are very keen to learn all about them.

Last week, students were exploring publishing their narrative titled ‘Super Peggy’. Students learnt how to create a capital letter using the keyboard, how to change the font and font colour, and much more.

In the lead-up to the Coonabarabran Show, Children’s Services were busy prepar ing their entries, with children creating art, decorating hats, and organising their cooking projects.

For the third consecutive year, the Yuluwirri Kids scarecrow took first place and was crow ned Champion Scarecrow. With Tracy’s help, the children chose the theme of an astronaut for their scarecrow.

The creative process began with a large paper mâché head, which the kids carefully shaped and painted into a helmet.

After selecting colours, they stuffed the body with newspaper, making a qu i rk y but st u rdy shape. The children then designed and attached accessories to complete the astronaut look.

The final touch was g iv ing the scarecrow a name. After several fantastic suggestions, the name ‘Telco’ emerged

a s t he w i n ne r. T he winning scarecrow is now positioned at the front of Yuluwirri Kids to greet all our visitors.

In addition to their scarecrow project, the children participated in incursions related to the

show. Ben, from Reptiles on the Go, brought a variety of fascinating repti les, includ ing Squirtle the Turtle, Hazel the Olive Python and Crunch the Crocodile.

Tooraweenah Public Pillowcase Project We we r e pl e a s e d to welcome Ker r ie from The Red Cross’s P illowcase P roject to our school.

Throughout the lesson, students participated in engag ing discussions that emphasised the sig ni f icance of being prepa red for emergencies. T hey learned how to prepare t he i r m i nd s f o r t he thoughts and feelings that may arise before, during, and after such events, fostering resilience and emotional readiness.

One of the key components of the Pillowcase Project was educating students on what to include in an emergenc y k it . T hey d i s c over e d e s s ent i a l

items that can provide com for t and sa fety i n c r i s i s s it u at ion s , ensur ing they feel secure and ready to face any challenge.

As a fun and creative element to the project, each student was given a pillowcase to decorate and ta ke home. T h is pillowcase serves as a starting point for their own personal emergency kit, encouraging them to actively participate in their preparedness journey.

Free RSV immunisation for newborns Commencing last Monday, 17 March, free immunisation from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has been made available to all newborn babies.

RSV is a common cause of respiratory illness infecting up to 90 per cent of children within the first two years of life. It can affect anyone, but the infection is more severe in children under one year of age, who may develop bronchiolitis or pneumonia – requiring hospitalisation.

NSW Health says the new immunisation program means all newborn babies can be protected against serious illness from this virus, with an estimated 1150 babies under six months of age avoiding hospitalisation for RSV in NSW each year.

I have just spent much of the last two weeks out on the road, but this week I am back in parliament f o r t w o c o n s e c ut i v e sitting weeks. I made my way across about 3000 kilometres from Sydney to Bathurst for an arms fair, to Nyngan, Nymagee, C oba r, Wilcannia and Broken Hill, for the St Patrick’s Day races, making my way back to Sydney for the sitting week.

Free virtual care for western NSW Earlier this month, the government announced it was ex t end i ng its f r e e v i r t u a l-he a lt h care service to patients in western NSW. The service will be limited to non-life-threatening cond itions such as c oughs , c old s , fever, respiratory complaints, vomiti ng, d ia r rhoea, minor infections and rashes. The service will operate between 8am and 10pm and can be ac cessed by phon i ng Health Direct on 1800 022 222. Patients will be put th r ough t o a registered nurse who a s s e s s t he pat ient ’s condition and, if appropriate, refer them

discharge, provided through the National Immunisation Program.

Women who are pregnant can currently receive free vaccination for RSV, which passes protection to their babies for the first five months of life. Maternal vaccination for RSV is recommended for women between 28 and 36 weeks of pregnancy.

The RSV immunisation will also be offered to children up to 24 months of age with certain medical conditions.

“RSV can be very serious, and I know how stressful and anxietyinducing such a condition can be for parents.

This book broke my heart. I waded through it, forcing myself into a perspective different from my usual one – a more positive one. I felt real pain watching the ch a ra cte r s b e co m e hardened toward each other, blaming one another for their unhappiness.

We spend so much time with these highlydeveloped characters that it is impossible not to see ourselves in their faults. I couldn’t help but transfer the pain they inflicted on their spouses onto my own experiences.

Slogging through it in just a couple of weeks, as I did, consumed me, feeding an urgency to create a life I believe in before tragedy might cut it short.

Cut it sho r t, that’s exactly what Eliot does n ot d o. S h e a vo i d s cl ichés, opting to deliver a rich, dense, and wonderfully co n s i s te nt n a r rat i ve throughout all 853 pages. An impressive feat.

After my last review, I tried many books, but ba rely made it past the first page because

I would like to see more focus on Regional Hospitals and Services, which should be achieved by the bill. By making Regional Hospitals the sole focus of a separate Health District run from a rural headquarters, the only priority should be operating and staffing hospitals and delivering services that best serve regional areas.

Remote paramedics We have seen some good things happening with regional paramedics in recent t i me s , i n c lud i n g a n i ncrease i n numbers and in pay. Last week I met with a group of paramedics from Broken Hill who discussed some areas that still needed improvement. One major problem is that, given

their isolation, it is not always possible to find a crew for call outs. In a metro area, backup crews can easily be called in from a neighbouring suburb to plug gaps, but that isn’t possible in a remote station like Broken Hill. They are asking for a ‘taxpayer funded roster’ that will give the paramedics the flexibility to cover team members taking leave.

They are also asking that they be allowed to have pa ramed ics oncall to cope with peak p er io d s , l i ke t he S t Pat’s Day Races, which d r aw s t h o u s a nd s o f people and was held on a particularly hot day this year.

There is also the issue of career progression.

To become an Intensive Care Paramedic (ICP), Broken Hill’s paramedics need to go elsewhere to train, with the likelihood they might never return. ICPs increase the su r v ivabi l ity for patients through adva nced med ication and intubation skills.

Very soon, paramedics w it h t hei r ex t ende d scope of practice will play an increasing role in taking pressure off local hospitals by dealing with patients who might otherwise present at an emergency department.

It is clear that some of the rules and policies surrounding paramedics need to change to suit cond itions i n remote stations like Broken Hill.

I will be discussing this with the Regional Health Minister.

WEATHER WATCH Ex-tropical cyclone Alfred did bring some rainfalls to places in our region during the past week.

Coonabarabran had the highest rainfalls, with 38mms.

A few towns did not receive any rain. Dubbo received no rain, making this the first rainless first half of March since 1995.

At Cowra, it was first time since 1965 that the first half of March was rainless.

The ex-tropical cyclone has set up well-abovenormal maximum and minimum temperatures in our region for all of March to date and is likely to continue for another week. There are signs that early April will see high daily temperatures as well.

Adelaide, after a very dry year last year, has recorded its driest summer for 33 years. Other very dry summers in Adelaide which followed a dry year occurred in 1859-60 and 1882-83. Both 1860 and 1883 were wetter than average at most places in our region.

The southern regions of Western Australia have recorded much-needed rainfalls after very dry conditions since October.

Albany has recorded a total of 128mms this month, the wettest for March since 136mms in 1960. A daily fall of 81.2mms on 14 March was the highest daily fall since 89.7mms on 10 March 10th , 1917.

The period April 1960 to September 1960 and November 1960 was notably wetter than average in our regions.

Heavy rain returned to Cairns a few days ago after a very wet December to February period.

Sydney had its warmest night on 16 March, with 24.5 degrees, since 25.3 degrees on 8 March 1915.

Ra i nfa l l d u r i ng 1915 wa s n ota b l y a bove average in May and July 1915.

It is still very hot in Alice Springs and with more than half of March gone, the mean-maximum temperature of 41.2 degrees is more than eight degrees above the March normal – and nearly five degrees higher than a normal January.

RUGBY UNION The Coonabarabran Rugby Club is working u rgently t o re cr u it pl ay e r s a n d f i e l d a team for the upcoming season, as it faces a rebuilding phase following the departure of key players. After five very successful years where the Kookaburras made semi-finals c o n s t a nt ly a nd wo n two premierships, the Kookaburras are now g r appl i n g w it h retirements, injur ies and players transferring to rugby league under popular Unicorns’ coach, Nick Willoughby.

Newly-appointed Kookas’ coach Alexander Knight, known for his friendly and dedicated approach , is lead i ng the player recruitment drive, assisted by Lachie Stokie. Training sessions have been structured to balance fitness and skill development, but with only 8-10 players currently committed, the club needs to double its playing numbers before the f i rst competition match on 3 May. At a recent committee meeting, club officials emphasised the need to attract uncommitted local players to attend training sessions, held ever y T hu r sd ay at 6.30pm at No. 3 Oval.

to former players and K o ok a bu r r a Ju n ior s who may now live in Ta mwor th , D ubbo, Orange, or Narrabri, encou rag i ng them t o fill in for home or away games when available.

I n a n i n novative move, the club has commenced advertising for international r ugby pl ayer s who are backpacking in Australia and seeking regional work to qualify for a second-year visa.

Tom Cleary is leading this initiative, fielding numerous responses and work i ng th rough the process of selecting and securing players.

T he c lu b’s m aj o r sponsor, the Imperial Hotel, has also offered free accommodation for these potential players – and even some bar work for any that hold an RSA certification.

Additionally, up to four fa rm jobs have been identified for overseas r e c r u it s , w it h m o r e opportunities available for interested farmers.

Farmers interested in taking on one of these players, even if sharing with a neighbour, contact the club through Tom Cleary, Lonnie Stone or Ian Clifton.

To remove financial barriers, the club will cover the NSW Rugby r eg i st r at ion fe e a nd provide free shorts and socks for new players.

“A l l t h e fe e d b a c k from our members has been great. It’s made a big d if fe rence to the climate inside the club.”

T h e s e r e n ova t i o n s can be found all over t h e c l u b. I n t h e b a r area, you will find new carpet, new vinyl and a new bar tap, which holds 12 drinks, while the club has added six new drinks to the menu.

New air conditioners have been instal led, welcomed by the general publ ic and club members.

“The air conditioning has probably been the thing that people notice the most b e ca u s e w h e n t h ey come inside after being out in the heat, they say, ‘Oh gee, it’s nice in here.’ So it has had an immediate impact,” Mr Freeman said.

A d d i t i o n a l l y, t h e smoking area now b o a s t s a n e w r o o f, which ful ly shelter s members from the weather.

Local contractors All renovations were car r ied out by locals and tradespeople from the area – something that is important to the club. “ We l i ke to g i ve back and support the local community,” Mr Freeman said.

“Guy Andrews handled the electrical and ai r conditioner instal lations, whi le floors were put in by C and D Murray, who hail from Coonamble. The

roof over the smokers’ area was put in place by local builders, Phil and Mick Kuras.”

WEDNESDAY GOLF The past four weeks has seen very few golfers out and about on Wednesdays, reasons being – heat, health and holidays. However, autumn has seen a burst of golf activity with the annual matchplay competition underway at the Coonabarabran Golf Club.

The first match was between Jan Keppie and Kerrie Ward, with Kerrie taking the win, twoup. Both girls reported having a fun-filled round, alternating the lead hole for hole. Jan threw in a ‘birdie’ for good measure.

The winner of the Coonabarabran Golf Club’s stableford event played last Saturday, 15 March, was Brad Weatherall, 37 points on a count back from Aden Larance.

Ball winners were Aden Larance, Craig Bennell 33, Frank Nottle 32 and Stan Capewell 31.

Bennell Family 4BBB The club’s major event for the weekend was the Bennell Family 4BBB. This was formerly the Nurse Taylor and the Bennell family has taken it on and changed it up – with great success also, as we had 20 players turn up for the event.

The winners, after a card draw and 4BBB scores added, were Wally Tighe and Stass Agalidis with 43 points. They won on a count back from Sandra McCaw and Rob Tink.

Wally must of played really well as Stass had a LOT of wipes!

Robert Bartel honoured as Moree Plains Senior Citizen of the Year Unwavering dedication to the Moree Plains community has been recognised for Robert Bartel who was announced as the 2025 Moree Plains Shire Senior Citizen of the Year.

Mr Bartel has dedicated many years of service to the community through various roles and volunteer work.

Mr Bartel was an active member of Apex from 1969 to 1985 and Moree Lions Club from 1986 to 2018, holding various leadership positions and receiving prestigious awards.

He volunteers at the Moreena Pensioner Units, Moree Historical Society and Whiddon Moree (Fairview) assisting with tasks and supporting the elderly.

Mr Bartel is involved in the Moree Services Bowling Club, Croppa Creek Old Header Harvest Weekend and helps his neighbours with repairs and farm work, Moree Plains Shire Council said when announcing Mr Bartel as the award recipient.

Additionally, he plays a vital role in organising the Seniors Festival and Christmas lunch.

His contributions reflect a deep commitment to his community, council said in its information published after the luncheon held at the Moree RSL last Wednesday.

At the celebration, Moree Plains Shire mayor Susannah Pearse praised the significant contribution of senior citizens to local communities.

“Our senior citizens have played pivotal roles in shaping

our towns and villages over successive years,” Cr Pearse said.

“Many of the privileges and even basic services that our entire community gets to enjoy have been made possible due to their volunteerism and advocacy.

“We thank all nominees for Senior Citizen of the Year for their valued contributions to our community.”

Award nominees Colin Rice, Frank Crump, Marlene Howard and Denise Webb, in addition to Mr Bartel, were thanked for their contribution to Moree Plains Shire.

Cr Pearse also made special mention of Mr Bartel as the winner of the award for 2025.

“Robert’s unwavering dedication to the Moree Shire community is a remarkable testament to his selflessness and commitment to service,” Cr Pearse said.

The Senior Citizen of the Year award is presented annually as part of the NSW Seniors Festival.

In Narrabri, a celebration was also held last Wednesday with Fay Kirk and Robert Walker acknowledged for their contributions to Narrabri Shire as joint Senior Citizens of the Year.

Mrs Kirk is a long-standing volunteer with 2MaxFM and is involved with the Narrabri Parkinson’s Support Group and the Whiddon Ladies Auxiliary.

Mr Walker is a long-standing member of the Rotary Club of Narrabri and is also involved in the Parkinson’s support group.

Air Mass set for tour of New England North West region Award-winning saxophonist and composer Nick Russionello will host his ‘Air Mass’ concerts in Gunnedah, Armidale and Inverell this month.

All scheduled Chemical CleanOut events in the North West region have been cancelled until further notice due to a recent fire at the Cleanaway processing facility in Sydney.

Northern Inland Regional Waste (NIRW) advised the fire caused significant operational disruptions across the wider network.

“We are actively working with Cleanaway and other relevant authorities to determine alternative solutions for the safe disposal of household chemicals,” a NIRW spokesperson said.

“While we understand the inconvenience this may cause to the community, it is important for residents to remember that household chemicals should not be disposed of in regular waste or recycling.

“Improper disposal can lead to environmental harm, safety risks, and additional strain on local waste management systems.

“NIRW and your local council are committed to ensuring that our community has access to safe and environmentally responsible methods for disposing of household chemicals.

“Our team is expecting Chemical CleanOut collection events to be rescheduled to later in the year.

We will provide updates as soon as new plans are in place. In the meantime, we ask for the public’s patience and understanding as we navigate this unexpected situation.”

Appeal for Moree break and enter information

Gunnedah Conservatorium’s exciting 2025 event program continues this month with award-winning saxophonist and composer Nick Russionello performing Air Mass at The Civic on Saturday, March 22, at 7pm.

Russionello’s new show, which is touring to many regional centres as part of a national tour, redefines the boundaries of the solo saxophone recital. This show combines extreme saxophone playing, audience generated sounds, live looping, body percussion and more.

“We are lucky to have had Nick perform in Gunnedah with us several times both as a soloist and part of ensembles. He provides such a variety of music for all audiences. This is certainly one that is not to be missed – a concert for the whole family,” Gunnedah Conservatorium director Rebecca Ryan said.

“We had a little insight into this show when Nick performed at the band hall a couple of years ago

and the audience was in awe of the soundscape one person could create. Some would be familiar with how artists like Ed Sheeran use loops to create their whole sound, and this is what Nick does too. It’s great to be part of that as an audience and sometimes even help make the music.”

The audience can expect a seamless blend of lyricism and groove as Russionello’s program moves between the elegance of classical composers Telemann and Debussy to the energy of modern beatbox and Daft Punk. The concert also features the world premiere of Russoniello’s new original composition Air Mass.

Russionello is one of Australia’s leading composer-performers.

He has performed as a soloist with many of Australia’s premier arts organisations including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, ABC Classic FM and Musica Viva Australia. His music for

saxophone is also played regularly by saxophonists all around the world.

“I love playing in Gunnedah, I’ve visited a few times with Musica Viva and with Music in the Regions,” Russionello said. “I always find the audiences so warm and there always seems to be lots of keen musicians in that area.

“This show is going to be a lot of fun, I’m hoping to show the audiences some exciting things that they haven’t seen before.”

Police are appealing for information after a woman was assaulted during a break and enter in Moree.

About 1am on Thursday, March 13, emergency services were called to a caravan park on Amaroo Drive following reports of an alleged break and enter. Officers attached to New England Police District were told two unknown people broke into a cabin before they attempted to steal an SUV. Police were also told the pair assaulted a 50-year-old woman by punching her in the head, before they left the scene on foot with a car key. The woman was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the incident has commenced.

About 10am on Sunday, March 16, police were notified an alleged stolen Ford Mustang was trav-

elling towards Moree along the Gwydir Highway.

Officers attached to New England Police District successfully deployed road spikes as the vehicle allegedly travelled at speed on the highway.

The vehicle came off the roadway momentarily before it returned to the roadway. Police attempted to stop the vehicle and when it did not stop, a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit was terminated a short time later when police lost sight of the vehicle.

About 10.15am, police were called to Warialda Street, Moree, following reports the vehicle had been sighted and a man was seen running from the location.

Upon arrival, police seized the vehicle for forensic examination.

About 10.50pm, police attended the Moree Showgrounds and arrested a 36-year-old man.

He was taken to Moree Police Station, where he was charged with aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence-people there, steal motor vehicle and police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously.

He was refused bail to appear in Moree Local Court on Monday, March 17.

Survey reveals difficult access to after hours GP services in Quirindi

The Liverpool Plains Shire Council has agreed to support the Rural Doctors Network (RDN) to try and recruit a doctor to Quirindi.

It follows a recent community health survey which provided valuable feedback and insights on access to health services.

The survey was delivered via council’s engagement hub ‘Your Say Liverpool Plains’ from November 18 until December 15, 2024. A total of 265 people completed the survey.

The purpose of the survey was to help identify local priorities and any barriers to accessing health care in the Liverpool Plains. This included general practices, public health services, allied health services, mental health services, and Aboriginal health services.

The anonymous community survey was open to all residents over the age of 15 and sought to capture a broad range of perspectives from people of all ages and backgrounds.

This community health survey forms part of the Collaborative Care program, a community-centred program that addresses healthcare needs in rural NSW. The program was developed by Rural Doctors Network and expanded this year to include Liverpool Plains with support from the NSW Ministry of Health.

Key results Accessing health services overall A large proportion of survey participants reported difficulties with accessing health services in the region. The main reasons why they encounter difficulties accessing health services revolve around health workforce shortages and the associated limited appointment availabilities and long waiting times for appointments as a result. Compounding these challenges, local services are limited and they therefore need to travel substantial distances to access services in neighbouring towns and regional centres.

More than 80 per cent of participants reported that they regularly travel for more than 45 minutes to access necessary health services.

Accessing GP services More than 90 per cent of participants accessed a GP in the previous 12 months. More females than males felt that they waited too long for an appointment. Wait times spanned anywhere from one week to more than six weeks.

Most participants (68.2 per cent) reported being able to access their GP in 1-4 weeks.

Accessing a GP outside of routine business hours is a key challenge in the region. A total of 134 participants reported that they tried to access a GP outside of business hours in the previous 12 months. More than half of these (73 participants) were not able to access a doctor.

These participants were not asked directly what they did when they realised that they couldn’t access a doctor after hours, however, it was noted by several participants elsewhere in the survey that

residents who could not access a GP often had to resort to presenting to the public hospital emergency department.

Accessing telehealth services Just under half of the participants (48.8 per cent) had accessed services via telehealth in the previous 12 months.

Satisfaction with telehealth was generally high among participants, with 63.9 per cent reporting that it met their needs. Some participants saw opportunities to increase telehealth access and uti-

lisation to help reduce the amount of travel that patients need to do to access services.

Other participants were less enthusiastic about telehealth due to a perception of it being impersonal. Some participants reported challenges related to the quality of care within a telehealth consultation, including that their telehealth doctor could not access all of their relevant medical information including blood tests and the patient was therefore concerned that a thorough, informed

diagnosis was not made.

Liverpool Plains Shire Council responded to the survey’s findings.

“Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the survey — it’s a first step, but a crucial one, that will help us to better understand and address local healthcare needs,” mayor Ken Cudmore said.

“We know Dr Sheeran’s departure has made it harder to see a GP, adding strain to local services. We’re committed to working with the Rural Doctors Network

and Primary Health Network to find solutions, support GP recruitment, and improve healthcare access for our community.”

At the February ordinary meeting, council agreed to support the Rural Doctors Network (RDN) to try to recruit a doctor to Quirindi.

Hunter New England and Central Coast Primary Health Network (HNECCPHN) is also providing a generous incentive of $25,000 towards the recruitment of a doctor.

Bushfire prevention program Casual Transgrid has launched its comprehensive annual bushfire prevention program, including helicopter inspections and 3D laser scanning, to ensure the safe operation of the transmission network in the lead-up to next summer.

LiDAR inspections by plane are underway across parts of the network and will wrap up in March, with helicopter inspections to follow in coming months.

Executive general manager of network Marie Jordan said: “Our priority is to protect the safety of landowners, communities and our people and we take the risk of bushfires very seriously and do everything we can to reduce potential risks.

“Our transmission lines have been safely operating for decades, and we are committed to ensuring they continue to do so for many years to come as they are a critical piece of the clean energy transition.

“Transgrid’s network includes more than 13,000km of transmission lines – the equivalent of travelling from Sydney to Perth four times – and we inspect it every year to ensure a high level of preparedness ahead of the summer bushfire season.

“Every year our team plans this program carefully so we can ensure it is as effective as possible to reduce bushfire risk and potential impacts to local communities.”

3D laser aerial surveys by plane and helicopter inspections to physically assess the condition of structures and lines are underway on the state’s transmission network.

The 2025 bushfire prevention program runs until September and includes: A 3D laser aerial survey of easements across the entire network using LiDAR technology to identify vegetation growing too close to transmission lines Helicopter inspections to physically assess the condition of structures and lines On-the-ground teams carrying out network maintenance and addressing potential vegetation

encroachments to reduce bushfire risks.

Between May and September, specialist helicopter crews will inspect transmission lines across the state.

“The comprehensive inspections help identify any potential bushfire risks such as vegetation encroachments and assess the condition of towers and transmission lines,” Ms Jordan said.

“This year we will have two helicopters in the air at the same

time in the Wagga and Yass areas and in Sydney and Newcastle to enable us to complete inspections faster.

“Using two helicopters across these regions will allow us to expedite this year’s program so we can send in on-the-ground teams sooner to carry out any necessary vegetation management to maintain our easement corridors and tower and line maintenance before the start of the next bushfire season.”

Casual speeding is the biggest cause of deaths and serious injuries on NSW roads.

From 2019-23 almost two thirds of speed-related deaths and serious injuries on NSW roads occurred when a speeding driver or rider was travelling no more than 10km/h over the speed limit.

Yet most drivers in NSW admit to casual speeding when they get behind the wheel.

When the unexpected happens on the road - the speed that drivers are travelling, matters.

‘Just a bit over’ can be the difference between being able to stop in time or not at all.

‘Safe speeding’ - there’s no such thing.

If the worst happens and there is a crash, any extra speed means extra impact force – and the human body can only tolerate so much before death or serious injury is all but inevitable.

Evidence shows that small changes in speed can have a big impact on the outcome of a crash: Going 5 km/h over in a 60km/h zone doubles your risk of having a crash.

Going 10 km/h over in a 60km/h zone means you’re four times as likely to be involved in a crash.

If all drivers had a less casual attitude towards speeding and did not drive above the speed limit, together motorists across the state could help prevent deaths and serious injuries on the road.

Last chance to secure TSR grazing permits Applications are due to close soon for long term grazing access to select Travelling Stock Reserves (TSR).

Tender submissions are now open for Long Term Grazing Permits, which are valid for up to five years from July 2025.

Permits are allocated via a robust tender process led by Local Land Services. Submissions close at 11:59pm on Sunday, March 30.

Program Lead TSR, Sam Hand, said strategic grazing played an essential role in effective TSR management.

“TSR are widely valued for biodiversity conservation, Indigenous culture and recreation, as well as

their traditional use for travelling stock and grazing,” Mr Hand said.

“Long Term Grazing Permits allow producers to make long-term business decisions and access TSR for extra fodder to support healthy livestock, particularly during times of drought, feed shortages and other emergencies.

“Successful tenderers are expected to contribute to positive land management practices on the TSR, such as controlling pests and weeds and protecting biodiversity.

“Collaboratively, we can ensure TSR are well maintained and managed effectively for years to come.

“While select, carefully assessed TSR are eligible for Long Term Grazing Permits, all are available by application for short-term access and reserve use permits.”

Applicants are required to inspect the TSR before making a submission, to ensure it is fit for their intended grazing usage.

In NSW, there are more than 6500 TSRs on Crown land, covering an area of around two million hectares. Local Land Services manages about 30 per cent of the state’s TSR network, which is approximately 578,000 hectares.

All submissions must be lodged online. Applicants can phone their nearest Local Land Services.

Scam losses plunge by 24 per cent The National Anti-Scam Centre’s latest Targeting Scams Report found scam losses reported fell by 25.9 per cent to $2 billion in 2024, showing the efforts by government, industry, law enforcement and community organisations are reducing the financial impact of scams on Australians.

This report combines data from Scamwatch, ReportCyber, the Australian Financial Crimes Exchange, IDCARE and Australian

Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

According to the combined data, scam reports also fell by 17.8 per cent to 494,732 scam reports for 2024 compared to 601,803 in 2023.

“While we are encouraged by the drop in reported financial losses, we acknowledge scammers are sophisticated and highly motivated criminals. We need to remain vigilant and pivot our defences to maintain this downward trajecto-

ry,” ACCC deputy chair Catriona Lowe said.

“Combining and actioning the intelligence we and partners receive through reports is a key element of this effort.”

“Scams lead to more than just financial loss. We know that the impact on scam victims and families is all too often life changing, and scams have negative effects on relationships, mental health and well-being.”

KEEPERS RAISE GIRAFFE CALF AT DUBBO ZOO A Giraffe calf is thriving behind the scenes at Taronga Western Plains Zoo, despite being rejected by his mother shortly after birth.

The male calf was born to experienced mother Nyah on December 2, but did not suckle.

Abandoned by his mother, keepers intervened to commence handrearing, implementing around-theclock care and feeding.

Keepers have named the calf ‘Msumeno’, a Swahili word meaning ‘seesaw’, because his condition was so “up-and-down” in his early weeks.

“It was a bit touch and go in the beginning,” Keeper Leigh Drayton said.

“Msumeno didn’t have a suckle response so getting milk into him was a real challenge, but at the 11th hour he started drinking milk on his own. Handraising the calf has been challenging but very rewarding and we’re really happy to see him doing really well.”

The calf is now over three months old and at over 120 kilograms has doubled his birth weight, but he is not yet ready to join the main herd as he doesn’t reliably respond to keepers’ calls to come and feed.

Instead, he has been introduced to his father Mtoto, who currently lives separately to the Zoo’s main breeding herd.

“An experienced father weighing in at about one tonne, Mtoto has very gently showed his calf the ropes,” Leigh said.

“Mtoto has been great with his calf, teaching him what to eat and what not to eat, and it’s great to see Msumeno exploring his surroundings and learning from his dad.

“Msumeno also has fence contact with our 16-strong breeding herd, including fellow calves Miguu, Nala, Asani and Chacha. The next challenge is to transition Msumeno onto solid foods as quickly as possible so he can integrate into the herd and continue to grow and develop with the four other calves born here last year.”

Msumeno’s birth brings the total Giraffe population at Taronga Western Plains Zoo to 25, making it one of the largest holders of the species in the Australasian region.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo has made a significant contribution to the regional conservation breeding program for Giraffe, welcoming 65 calves since 1990, including five in 2024: Miguu, Nala, Asani, Chacha and Msumeno.

These animals serve as an important insurance population for their wild counterparts in Africa, whose numbers have declined by about 40 per cent since the 1980s. The main threats facing Giraffe in the wild include poaching, habitat loss and degradation, human population growth, disease, war and civil unrest. In addition to the breeding program, Taronga supports anti-poaching and wildlife monitoring activities in Africa.

Visitors to Taronga Western Plains Zoo can make a difference for species like Giraffe simply by visiting the Zoo, staying overnight, or buying a gift or encounter. Taronga is not-forprofit, so every dollar spent at the Zoo has the power to protect wildlife like Giraffe.
