Decision looming over Stop and Play Park Warrumbungle Shire Council has proposed an underground solution to the Stop and Play park bungle. by CHRIS WARD The newly-constructed play equipment erected at Neilson Park in Coonabarabran was forcibly closed to the public earlier this year, just days after being opened. It seemed everyone involved in the planning and construction overlooked a major design flaw and the park was built directly under high voltage power lines. Council will channel remaining funds from the project into resolving the safety concerns. Wa r r u m b u n g l e S h i r e mayor, Cr. Ambrose Doolan said while it was good news, ratepayers would still have to fork out the difference. “There’s roughly $50,000 left in the funds and the estimate for the job is in the mid-to-high-$70,000,” he said.
“By the end of the project, Council will be out of pocket by around $27,000 to $30,000.” Cr Doolan said consultants had developed a design that would see the high voltage wires move underground and around the park. Council recently sent the design to Essential Energy, which has 12 weeks to approve or deny the request. From there, assuming the feedback is positive, Council will have to provide four weeks’ notice to homes and businesses in the area for a planned outage so work can begin on transferring the wires underground. “So, at this stage, it’s looking like it will be ready by early 2023,” Cr Doolan said. “If everything aligns there’s a possibility it will be done by Christmas.”
